Hunters be safe

The Hawke’s Bay Farming Lifestyles is published with pride by NorthSouth Multi Media Ltd, a privately owned New Zealand company.

The approaching ‘roar’ and the opening of the game bird season will encourage thousands of hunters into the hills and swamps of New Zealand. National hunting associations and key government departments think it is timely to remind hunters to ‘be safe’.

“Safe use of hunting firearms is pretty basic,” said New Zealand Deer Association president Bill O’Leary. In the past decade the number of firearm licence applicants has more than doubled and this has increased hunter numbers. The Hunter Safety Interagency committee chaired by Mr O’Leary is reminding hunters to follow some basic rules. “Get a firear ms licence, get permission to access and hunt on land, communicate your presence to other hunters and understand and observe the basic rules of firearm safety.” Mr O’Leary said that the media and the public tend to focus on the ‘failure to identify’ incidents but he emphasises that most incidents are the result of ‘failure to observe basic rules’ such as always pointing the firearm in a safe direction. “The Hunter Safety Committee’s analysis of incidents has identified potential causal factors. Unlicensed shooters and illegal hunting are ‘red flags’ and along with spotlighting have featured too frequently in shooting incidents. “Experienced shooters are not exempt from making mistakes. Bad habits, complacency and deteriorated eyesight have been linked to past incidents. “Each and every hunter needs to look hard at their own and their

mates’ attitudes and conduct and ensure that safety is the most basic of considerations when hunting.” The Hunter Safety Inter-agency committee promotes safe firearm usage and draws its members from NZ Police, Department of Conservation, New Zealand Deerstalkers’ Association, Fish and Game NZ, New Zealand Pig Hunters’ Association and Firearm Safety Specialists NZ. The New Zealand Deerstalkers’ Association is a national organisation of hunters with 48 branches running training in safe firearm usage and hunting.

Winning at dairy The 2017 Hawke’s Bay/Wairarapa Dairy Industry Awards Share Farmer of the Year winners Rob and Shiralee Seerden say entering the competition has given them a better understanding of their whole business. Kenny Henderson was named the Dairy Manager of the Year, and Brandyn Beale the Dairy Trainee of the Year. “Being able to analyse why we make the decisions we do, and ensure they are the best for our farming enterprise, has been a huge benefit of entering the awards,” said Rob and Shiralee. The couple have been on their current 80ha farm since 2009 and say their goal is to look for a new role in the 2018/19 season and move to a 450–650 head position, either in 50/50 sharemilking or an equity partnership job. They have seven children and are currently contract milking 225 cows for John and Jean Ellison at Norsewood. Their farming procedures are continually evaluated through all stages, with a focus on measuring results through quality practices. “The end result is well-grown and healthy cows that are able to perform and produce well,” they said. It is fourth time lucky for Kenny Henderson. “Entering previously has made me more aware of my strengths and weaknesses as a manager, thanks to the judges’ feedback. I have increased my profile within the industry and made new contacts,” said Kenny. Kenny is the farm manager for Ben and Nicky Allomes, who are 50/50 sharemilkers for Kay Cassells on her Woodville property.

The 2017 Hawkes Bay/Wairarapa Dairy Industry Awards Share Farmer of the Year winners Rob and Shiralee Seerden

“My farming goal is to remain in a stable work position in one area and farm for as long as possible to allow my wife and children a settled lifestyle. “Currently remaining where I am and progressing to self-employment would be ideal as the Allomes are very progressive employers and the farm is very well set out in a manner that enables it to be profitable.” Brandyn Beale is 21 years old and is the herd manager on Mike and Jane Joho’s 350-cow farm at Dannevirke and

says he plans to progress to a manager’s position in the next few years. “I also want to be running 150 bulls on land that I will lease off my greatgrandparents and eventually purchase that,” said Brandyn. His other interests are all things sport, especially motorsport. “I am the vice-president of our recently formed DVK Burnouts Club, and we are working with the council as youths, to get a funded skid pad.”

T

rudy was born and bred on a dairy farm in the Hauraki Plains and was living in Hamilton as a marketing manager for Hamilton Zoo when she met Peter online in 2008. “It was a bit of a change shifting from the mighty Waikato to central Hawke’s Bay. I missed my family, friends and restaurants, but things change and you just get on and make the most of it,” said Trudy. ”When I first moved to the farm Peter had sheep and a pic ‘n’ mix of cattle including some pretty crazy cattle — the cross-bred herd had resulted in some

temperament issues, which needed to be addressed. “Peter bought the farm off his parents six months before meeting me. Owning it ourselves gives us the freedom to do what we want and it allows us to drive our own destiny. We can plan and make changes without feeling guilty and we are trying to take the farm to the next level. “I see a lot of people work side by side for their parents and it can be difficult because you can’t make certain decisions. “We got a Hereford bull and are shifting across to Herefords. also making a change with our rams and moving to Coopworths.” Peter takes a relaxed approach and is trying to build natural resistance and defence in the stock. “There are a lot of intense styles of farming but we want to build our animals immunity naturally and we minimise the amount of drench we use. “He does the shearing himself as a way to control our costs. I rousie if and when I can. It was easier when the children were younger, but now I have other commitments so we tend to get someone to rousie.” Trudy and her mother started a new online business last year. “The Cotton Pony is an online feminine subscription. We started off thinking we would sell to farming mums, but our clientele are women in all industries and girls at boarding schools. “The idea came about because you rush to the supermarket and often forget your own stuff. We have to drive close to an hour to town and if you are caught without feminine products it is a nightmare.” Customers go online and pick and mix up to 20 individual sanitary items. These get delivered a week before needed along with chocolates, tea and a New Zealand beauty product. The packages are a little white box with the pony sticker on it. “It is about celebrating that time of the month.” Trudy also runs an Ag marketing business — Tag 4 Consulting. “We offer a wide range of marketing aspects. Peter bought the family farm off his parents Trudy has other businesses and helps around the farm when she can now their children are older Hawke’s Bay. “I have had the opportunity to work with some fantastic companies, and help other mums launch their own businesses off farm. Sometimes it is a juggling act but that’s where Peter and I work well as a team, making sure that nothing and no one gets left behind.” Peter is also involved with the local volunteer fire brigade and is a qualified senior firefighter. “People don’t realise firefighters have to take two weeks off farm to do the basic firefighting course, plus ongoing training. “It is a big commitment. He will be out on the farm and have to drop his tools and head off to an incident. When it is in the middle of the night I don’t get back to sleep until he gets home. “You want to know if they are ok. It could be a road

accident of someone they know and the job takes a toll on them emotionally, but they deal with the situations and continue on.” Trudy says avoiding fires on a farm can be as simple as ensuring there are no bird’s nests in the wool sheds. “A lot of fires start in wool sheds because the birds build their nests in electrical areas, or old appliances. Bird’s nests in tractors are also a problem because when you start it up the nest goes up in flames. It pays to check all these places and keep them clear of hay. “Peter and I are now at the stage where everything is falling into place and we are familiar with all aspects of all three businesses.”

We then wanted beef cattle to go with the sheep running on the steeper 400 acres as well, and thought we would try a different breed of cattle to go with them,” said Shirley. “The Welsh Black have a good reputation for being hardy and providing

high quality meat and milk. Bruce and I started using the bulls to tidy up after AI for our dairy herd. They seem to be getting more popular and we sell the bulls to dairy farmers. “They are average sized cattle, about the same as a short horn — not great big huge things, but definitely not miniatures. They used to be dual purpose but with the increase of performance of traditional dairy breeds, they are now essentially a beef animal.”

as well as the horned ones. They are a good breed for anything really.” Last year the Welsh Black Cattle World Congress was held in New Zealand with 46 people visiting from across the world, including, Germany, Australia, United Kingdom, Luxembourg and Wales. “They are still popular in Wales and have been cross bred with an exotic cow but the farmers there are going back to the original now. A Canadian visitor said they are great for the snow conditions where they live,” said Shirley. “They are good for cold climates because of their thick winter coat. They need a shelter to hide from the wind but they don’t necessarily need housing in tough snow conditions as they hold their own heat longer than other breeds. They have very thick hides and like all animals they do need shade in the summer.” In summer and in hot climates this coat is replaced with a smooth, glossy coat. “Welsh Blacks are a true hill country breed of cattle and are generally easy calving,” said Shirley. “Their history of being raised in harsh, outdoor environments and their ability to convert rough feed into weight gain and having a willingness to forage makes them an ideal animal for any property.” The calves are known to be vigorous and hardy and do not present feeding problems in dairy operations. The cows have a long, even lactation up to 300 days and they have a long productive life of 15–20 years. “This hardy breed has much to offer modern

farming systems with its ease of production and award winning succulent meat. For more than 100 years the Welsh Black Cattle Society has nurtured, promoted and sought to improve the breed — a job which is continuing.” Margaret and Edwin Foord have 40 head of cattle and say they like them because of their temperament. “I was first introduced to the breed through some bulls my dad had. They were older Welsh Black and they were very calm and mellow to be around,” said Margaret. “Our children mistook them for stumps in the bush and it was then that I got really interested in the cows. My husband and I foot farm so we have a lot to do with the cattle and interact with them. The more we walk and talk to them the more they trust us.”

Margaret says cattle they have brought in that had never been handled are now people friendly and as the years go on their progeny have become more trusting. “We sometimes have open days with 50 people visiting and our cattle handle it. They grow well on moderate or rough tucker. At present we are clearing off the neighbour’s property getting rid of the rank tough stuff including gorse and turning it back into pasture. “They are wonderful cattle. They grow well and we don’t lose as many stock because they are so hardy. We highly recommend these cattle for all types of farms, they suit hill as well as low country.“

FERRERE MANAGEMENT LTD

Ask the professional: Geotechnical Engineer by Ian Jennings

Citrus Consultancy, Development, Management and Contracting.

Geotechnical engineering used to be a nice respectable profession where no one really knew what you did and you could quietly get on with it without too many distractions.

Mandarin pickers wanted from the end of April until around mid August in the Gisborne area for casual, contract work with flexible hours.

However, the Christchurch earthquakes changed all that, and overnight Geotechnical Engineering was thrust into the limelight. People were introduced to terms like ‘liquefaction’, ‘lateral spread’ and ‘foundation improvements’. As a consequence of the Christchurch ear thquakes regulatory authorities around New Zealand have become more aware of the damaging effects of earthquakes, and in particular how critical the geotechnical aspects of a building project can be. This has led to revised engineering guidelines and greater scrutiny on the wider engineering profession. So what does a Geotechnical Engineer do? Simply put, a Geotechnical Engineer is half a Geologist and half a Civil Engineer. All structures, be it a building, a road or an earth structure such as a dam, are supported by the ground, and therefore one of the key roles of the Geotechnical Engineer is to determine what the local soils are and how they will react when the load from a structure is placed on it. A Geotechnical Engineer interprets the ‘real world’ of soil

and rock, and converts it into a series of numbers that represents its strength, and can be used in equations to determine if the loads and forces that are generated from a given structure can be balanced against the strength of the soil or rock. Cheal Consultants has an experienced team of Geotechnical Engineers operating within the central North Island. Within the rural sector we specialise in the remediation of existing irrigation dams and the design and construction of new ones. Cheal also has experience in foundation design for farm infrastructure such as milking shed platforms, stock underpasses, farm culverts and bridges. These larger projects tend to require a multidiscipline approach and Cheal’s wider team of Engineers, Surveyors and Planners provides the support and expertise to ensure efficiencies and overall satisfaction.

An aquatic and wildlife experience The National Aquarium of New Zealand, on Napier’s Marine Parade, is home to more than 100 rich and diverse saltwater, freshwater and land animal exhibits from New Zealand and around the world.

Nowhere else in the country can you experience such a large and diverse range of aquatic animals and wildlife, both native species and from around the world. The aquarium is also the only place in New Zealand where you can swim freely with the sharks (in a wetsuit not a cage), and the thrill of this experience will form the memory of a lifetime. You don’t have to be a qualified diver to swim with the sharks as this is a surface snorkelling swim, fully supervised as you eyeball sharks, stingrays and skates, and get up close with local fish like kahawai and snapper from nearby Hawke’s Bay. Native saltwater and freshwater species, as well as exotic reef and deepsea fish from around the world can be viewed. There are species from the Americas, Asia and Australia, including alligators and piranhas. The kiwi, tuatara and penguin enclosures provide an insight into

New Zealand’s most precious species. Working in close partnership with schools, scientists and other community groups, the aquariums aim is to increase awareness of the need to protect natural habitats and biodiversity. From early childhood through to adulthood, the aquarium offers visitors unique and stimulating experiences. The Fish Bowl Cafe is on site and has something for all tastes, from savouries, muffins and gluten-free options as well as, creamy fettucine on a chilly day to delicious frozen treats in the heat of summer and children’s ‘tackle box’ meals. Located at 546 Marine Parade, Napier, the National Aquarium is open every day (except Christmas Day) from 9am to 5pm. Last entry is at 4.30pm. Daily feeding times are 10am for the reef fish and 2pm for the sharks. The penguins are fed at 9.30am, 1.30pm and 3.30pm.

Part one: Sometimes it really is possible to achieve multiple health goals. A good anti-inflammatory diet will help arthritic joints, help lose weight and improve general health. Just as poor diets can cause systemic disease, so good diets can move us to systemic wellness. Last time we saw that avoiding inflammatory fats while targeting antiinflammatory can have a profound benefit for our joints. If fats are the most important component of nutritional therapy for arthritis then antioxidants are a close second. Many people still adhere to an outdated concept that osteoarthritis is caused by wear and tear of joints. Certainly injuries and damage can cause or worsen arthritis, but the real culprit is a process called oxidative stress caused by free radicals. Cartilage is secreted and maintained by specialised cells called chondrocytes. They manufacture and maintain the collagenous matrix that comprises cartilage. The problem is that chondrocytes are susceptible to damage by free radicals. If left unchecked by antioxidants, this damage accumulates to the point

that the chondrocyte DNA is damaged and can cause the cell to die. This means that the tiny piece of cartilage maintained by the chondrocyte has lost its repair system and will degenerate. Possibly the most important cartilage protecting antioxidant is glutathione, manufactured in the body from selenium. Others like the grape seed polyphenols and curcuminoids in turmeric are also highly effective. This is why a good multi-antioxidant/multimineral can really help. Even better if combined with 800mg of highgrade chondroitin, a 95% curcumin (turmeric) extract and lots of omega-3 fish oil. At any given time I actively help hundreds of people with osteoarthritis. The majority are able to get significant improvements from nutritional therapy. For more information give me a call or email. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. How can Bettaflex help?

• Chondroitin and glucosamine are building blocks of cartilage. • Supplementation with correct levels can support healthy cartilage function and cartilage repair processes. • Curcumin from turmeric helps to balance joint immune function to support joint health. • Research suggests chondroitin is effective only at levels of over 700mg daily.

John Arts comments:

“I formulated Bettaflex based on the latest research into natural compounds that can help with joint support and function. The normal dose is 2 capsules daily but I recommend a double dose for the first 1-2 bottles to saturate joint tissue.” (John Arts, Founder Abundant Health Ltd)

TO BUILD OR RENOVATE Switched on to gas by Andy Bryenton

There are three main areas of the home where electrical heating has been superseded, in terms of trends and economy, by a technology that harks back to Victorian times. At least the principle of gas power comes from those days of gas-lit lamps and steam boilers in automobiles — the modern applications for this natural resource are far more refined.

06 879 6099 OR ELWYN 027 404 2535

In fact, it’s the literal local refinement of natural gas — sourced here in New Zealand — that contributes in part to its popularity. As the networks of distributors grow and competition makes the price of constant and reliable resupply even more affordable, people are looking to gas as an alternative to electricity in many areas of heating. The most obvious, of course, is in the kitchen. With the rise of ‘top chef’ style cooking shows and the collateral rise in people’s desire to be culinarily adventurous, having a top kitchen is now a high priority for both renovators and home builders. The microwave is out and the gas hob is in as far as preparing meals goes, for reasons of even heat and precise temperature control. From the blazing temperatures needed for a real Thai stir fry down to the merest touch of the blue flame to poach perfect

eggs on a Sunday morning, gas is seen as the only way to go. And if the bottles are being installed, there’s no reason not to reticulate the entire home. Gas powered water heating is now more versatile than ever, with califonts becoming more efficient and the ability to heat and store water in a traditional cylinder for larger families now on the cards. The popularity of the ‘on demand’ hot water califont is growing among those who have small families or who are building their retirement lifestyle, and in many cases

it’s a simple decision to remove the old electric cylinder, install a califont and free up space for storage. Finally, as winter approaches, those with wood fires will be busy cutting and stacking wood. Not so those who own a gas fire. Flued, modern gas heating fireplaces may even prove less expensive to run — do the maths on the cost of trailer loads of wood! It’s the final point of the ‘gas refit triangle’, providing a warm home, hot meals and plenty of hot water all winter long.

Farm security is a snap

It used to be the case that far-flung rural areas were renowned for being free of crime and theft. Being a long way from the big city with its perceived villainy was a good reason for local pride — in a time when doors were never locked and the keys stayed in the ute at night. It’s sad but true that times have changed, and now farms are often at the front line of the security ‘arms race’ between sneak thieves and those who work hard for their money. Fuel supplies, quad bikes and even the contents of the homestead have been brazenly targeted by criminals, but technology is allowing rural folk to fight back with devices unheard of in previous years — at least outside of spy blockbusters. A popular choice on the shelves of many electrical stores is the Arlo wireless camera kit — a collection of four small cigarette pack sized camera modules and a single central hub or ‘base station’. The cameras are wireless with long life internal batteries, weatherproof to put up with showers of rain, and record information to a remote ‘cloud’ on the internet. Snap them to their special dome-shaped fittings to

cover any area of the home, and they even come with light amplifying night vision to help capture movement in the dark. Users can set the cameras to pop into life when they detect movement, or alternatively they can be controlled remotely from any cellular device. This means that anywhere you are in the world, the farm can be watched and kept secure. Picture this — an alert comes late at night while you’re out at dinner. A shadowy figure is trying to access the equipment shed. Snap to high-resolution night vision, and suddenly you have a clear view of the burglar’s face in real time. This image can be sent right to the police force for a quick ‘pickup’ — or used later as evidence to track down wrongdoers. Then again, as some Arlo camera models have a speaker and microphone,

Caught in the act — burglars are less likely to target homes with visible or signposted camera systems

you could also simply tell the hapless thief that he’s on film. That could cause any would be robber to head for the hills! In an age when almost everyone has broadband and

a mobile device, the kind of security systems which were once the preserve of prisons, banks and gold reserves are now available over the counter. See your local electrical store to find out more.

Ron’s company has recently taken delivery of a shipment of Sechura Reactive Phosphate Rock — and he was at the Port of Tauranga in February to see 2000 tonnes of it discharged for Kiwi Fertiliser from the MV Lolland. “This RPR fertiliser is the gold standard — the real McCoy of RPR. Its natural phosphorus is not acidified before it is spread on to pasture. “It is tested prior to loading in Peru and is above the minimum 10 per cent phosphorus and 30 per cent citric soluble criteria set for New Zealand RPR standards,” says Ron. “The shipment has arrived at the perfect time for autumn top dressing applications.” Because it is extracted from the ancient seabed in the Sechura region of Peru it also contains a lot of calcium, magnesium, sulphur and minor trace nutrients, which are all readily available to plants through the actions of soil life. Although the Sechura is not altered in anyway, Kiwi Fertiliser does add Brimstone 90 — an elemental sulphur — before application to the product to increase phosphorus plant availability. Reduced leaching “The RPR still has all of the colloidal clay attached to it.” Because it is a fine, sandlike substance, Ron says the risk of leaching into waterways is reduced by up to 80 to 90 per cent. The MV. Lolland spent 22 days at sea to bring the product from Peru to Tauranga and the Sechura RPR was discharged in 26 hours from her holds by a giant grab that can hold the equivalent of a full truck-and-trailer load of

material into the wharf hopper and from there into the trucks waiting below. The shipment has replenish supplies into Kiwi Fertiliser’s stores in Te Teko, Te Awamutu, Marton and Havelock North. Supplies of high quality RPR fertiliser have been limited in New Zealand in recent months — and Ron says Kiwi Fertiliser is pleased to be able to source high quality Sechura for its clients throughout the North Island. Soil audits So strong is the demand, the first two unit loads were dispatched immediately to a hill country beef farm near Wellsford. “This product is ideal for hill country sheep and beef farms, dairy farms particularly in the Waikato, and in fact any soils in which crops are grown and show the need for phosphate application,” says Ron. “However, we only supply phosphate for soils which are shown, through our soil audits, to be lacking in P. Many soils in the Central Plateau regions of Putaruru, Tokoroa, Taupo, Broadlands, Rotorua and Tauranga retain a lot of phosphorus and show excessive P so they don’t need additional applications — but they do need other nutrients that are a higher priority and a better soil fertility investment than phosphorus.” Although the Sechura fertiliser was tested at its source, Kiwi Fertiliser has commissioned two further independent tests from laboratories in New Zealand and the United States so its clients can be assured of the exact percentage of P and other nutrients as well as citric and formic solubility tests.

Fighting kiwifruit pests

Kiwifruit Vine Health (KVH) Inc and the Ministry for Primary Industries recently signed an agreement to help reduce the damaging impacts of the four most common biosecurity threats to the kiwifruit and kiwiberry sectors. The operational agreement under the Government Industry Agreement for Biosecurity Readiness and Response (GIA) sets out the contractual arrangements of how industry and government will work together to manage potential pests. “This means the kiwifruit and kiwiberry sectors and MPI can work together to manage and help reduce the impact of a number of pest threats on our sector, which has exports of almost $2 billion per year,” said KVH CEO, Barry O’Neil. “There are a number of biosecurity threats facing our industry. The Psa incursion, which impacted us from 2010,

cost the kiwifruit industry $1 billion. With the signing of this agreement we have committed to doing everything we can to stop another Psa-type event from occurring.” The agreement establishes the operational details for readiness and response activities and costsharing arrangements, to deliver better biosecurity outcomes for the kiwifruit sector. It includes the roles and responsibilities of all the parties, including how joint activities will be cost shared. The GIA partnership currently has 14 partners from across government and the wider primary sector, who have agreed to work together to jointly

manage biosecurity threats. “The GIA partnership welcomes the signing of this agreement as a positive step forward for both government and the kiwifruit sector,” said GIA secretariat manager, Steve Rich. “This agreement provides a prime example of how biosecurity will come to be managed in New Zealand under GIA — with industry and the Crown working together to achieve the best possible outcomes.” The agreement covers the four most common threats to the kiwifruit sector, and other pests and pathogens can be added to the agreement as they are identified.

Signatories to the agreement include Kiwifruit Vine Health Inc — on behalf of the kiwifruit and kiwiberry sectors — and the Ministry for Primary Industries, on behalf of the Crown. The kiwifruit and kiwiberry sector operational agreement is the second of its kind. The first agreement was the multi-sector agreement for the management of fruit fly in New Zealand, and agreements for brown marmorated stink bug are currently in development. Over time, further operational agreements for specific biosecurity threats, and sectors represented under GIA, will be executed between the partners to GIA.

Uncommon sense

David Law, Managing Director of Forward Farming Consultancy

What direction do you choose?

A little over four years ago I left the farm after 10 years of farming on the biological trail. Some people thought that to go in that direction you were brave, and others thought you were just plain stupid. There is still a very strong feeling that to take away the dependance of high usage of nitrogen, and more recently palm kernel, would be devastating to many farmers. To even contemplate moving into organics for them would be inconceivable. While regulations stay as they are then these farmers can rest easy and carry on managing their business unchanged. However, whether we like it or not, there is a wind of change blowing and early adopters to this change may well be better prepared for the storm that will inevitably arrive. We may well find that the way that the majority of farms are run will change over the next 5 years. Enforcement of strict regulations are likely to be rolled out during this time. High phosphate and nitrates in waterways are testament to a fertiliser system which clearly needs an overhaul. Whether it’s the farmers who apply it or the fertiliser companies who sell these nutrients, it’s obvious that there is too much for the plants to absorb. If the plants can’t absorb these surplus nutrients then they end up polluting our

precious water. So the regional councils have identified that restrictions are needed to stop the surplus nutrients, by decreasing the amount applied in the future. The overseer programme is the preferred system for measuring and managing this huge undertaking. This all seems fair, particularly from an environmental point of view. But is this scenario really fair? Well, from my experience as a farmer, the biological approach showed a lot of difference from the chemical way. So are these two obviously talked about systems so vastly different? I have found that the more I look and observe, the more the chemical system doesn’t make sense. The more I watch and observe over time the more I see that the chemical system is the very practice that is actually leading farmers down the wrong road. The largest part of my work has been to focus on the end point of our business, the effluent pond. The obvious practice to manage effluent has been to tackle and manage effluent with machinery. Solid separators, stirrers and weeping walls. The majority of farmers still think this way. There are even consultants that will advise farmers that this is the only way to manage effluent.

I have found that the farmers with the biggest effluent problems, particularly crusting and solids, are heavy chemical fertiliser users. In fact I can look at a heavily crusted pond and have a pretty accurate assessment as to the fertiliser a farmer is applying and what his soil is doing. After studying the fertiliser and soil science available to us, I have deduced that fertiliser companies have fabricated or left out some scientific facts, which has led our farming industry down a problematic pathway. If regional councils are now pointing the finger at farmers for their bad fertiliser practices, I would suggest the fault lies with the advice given to the farmers about the best fertilisers to use. I believe that fertiliser choices can be improved and farmers do have better avenues to procure quality products. My research and observation, along with similar practitioners, indicates that a biological approach demands a higher balanced pH soil which always shows increased microbiological activity. Microbes require the best possible conditions to digest food in a cow’s stomach. Science has shown that higher pH is a factor here. The more food the microbes and enzymes digest, the less undigested solids end up in the pond. Again, the effluent ponds with the least solids always have a higher pH in the pond. Chemical fertiliser teaching embraces a pH in the soil of 5.8 to 6. My research has very simply shown this soil pH will produce a crusted pond and the lower the soil pH the thicker the crust on the pond. I would suggest that a change to inputs which will lift the pH in a balanced approach, will also lift your efficiency throughout your whole farming system. For more information visit my website or arrange for me to visit.

Ensuring livestock have feed

Recent inclement weather throughout the North Island is a reminder for farmers to ensure they are reaching average pasture cover and cow condition targets ready for spring. DairyNZ recommends farmers should complete an autumn feed budget to identify shortages and ensure quality of any pasture renewal and also target autumn pests such as black beetle, aphids, clover root weevil and grass grubs where possible. Good grazing management through early autumn includes maximising pasture growth balanced with allowing pastures to recover following the summer dry period. ‘When planning renewal, identify the poor performing paddocks first and address the underlying problems behind pasture deterioration, and consider soil fertility and pH, pugging, overgrazing, weeds, pests, soil compaction and drainage,’ DairyNZ says. ‘Buy quality seed and select the right pasture species and/or cultivar for your farm. Sowing a small area well is less risky than sowing a large area poorly.

‘Take care sowing clover as it should be sown at a shallower depth than ryegrass, and give special attention to weed control, contouring and levelling if avoiding cultivation after forage crops. ‘Management is helped by leaving consistent post-grazing residuals and grazing pastures at the right time. Grazing ryegrass pastures too early reduces autumn growth and too late reduces the quality. ‘Determine the leaf stage of your pastures. Leaf appearance rates mainly depend on water availability and temperature, with leaves taking longer to appear where water is limited. ‘For areas nor th of Taupo, the recommended renewal date is March 31, and if permanent pasture is following crops, consider the time for full crop utilisation and the renewal process’.

Return of the top contender It’s all too easy to slip into a boxing metaphor when talk of the tussle for top light commercial comes around. Utes are big business and right now the Ford Ranger rules the roost, with even the mighty Toyota Hilux relegated to second place. We’ve even got an ‘undercard’ of lower-priced utes out of Asia and India battling for supremacy, but there’s been a notable gap in the top tier lately that has had certain badge-loyalists fuming. Back in the day, the Holden 1-tonne ute was king. Before the idea of a utility truck was redefined by the modern demand for car-like handling and leather interiors, the bench-seated, chrome-

grilled HQ was the working man’s first choice. Up against the Valiant and Falcon, the big Holden literally helped build most of our towns and cities. Now Holden are back, with a ute of a different mould. After their previous Colorado failed to topple the blue oval, GM bosses went back to the drawing board, and they’ve delivered an amped-up contender for 2017 — a new Colorado that embraces both modern aesthetics and safety while still staying true to the spirit — and lugging power

EITHER WAY IT’S 20K MIND YOUR SPEED AROUND SCHOOL BUSES

20

Headed for the top — the new Colorado is set to take on Hilux and Ranger as NZ’s best ute

— of the legendary one tonner. Under the hood a big 2.8L Duramax diesel pumps out 147 kilowatts and a maximum 500 newton-metres of torque — the key to the immense towing capacity of the Colorado, rated at 3.5 tonnes. Add in that classic one tonne of deck load and you have a machine which can handle the caravan, the boat or anything for the farm. That sense of comfort is more than apparent inside, with options for all the modern conveniences of a luxury sedan and standard features which older utes could only dream about. The suite of electronics, both visible and

invisible, are state of the art as well. It’s hard to miss the big touch screen centre console which serves as a hub for both Android and Apple’s in-car mobile platforms, as well as a reversing camera and entertainment centre. A battery of safety features — including hill descent control, trailer sway control, stability and traction control, a lane departure warning and even a tyre pressure monitor — offer another level of protection. The top utes had better watch out — one of the big names is back, cinching up its gloves to take a shot at the title. And for a heavyweight contender, it’s not bad looking, either!

A leap forward in efficiency by Andy Bryenton

When it comes to power and economy, there’s little question that electronic fuel injection beats traditional carburetted aspiration hands down. It may not have always been the case, but the modern computerised fuel delivery system is the key to better compression and more horsepower. The old style of carburettor went out of automobiles in the early 1980s, with the final examples being cars like the Triumph 2500 S and the first-edition Mazda RX7. It hung on in motorcycles until recently, and persists in even smaller engines such as those in lawnmowers. Or does it? It seems that times are changing in the world of ride-on zero turn mowers at least, with the coming of computer controlled electronic fuel injection to the Ferris mowers range. A good example of why this brand is being picked up enthusiastically by both lifestyle block owners and grounds maintenance professionals, the Ferris IS 3200 Z is more than just an engine upgrade. But once the comfortable seating position, responsive turning circle and wide, durable cutting deck are taken in, it’s the big twin-cylinder 28-horsepower mill mounted behind the driver’s seat which inevitably draws the attention. Similar in size to many other V-twin motors in the Ferris garage, this unit boasts 25 per cent greater fuel efficiency and a super-smooth purr from

the get-go. Ferris claims that piloting the IS 3200 Z across the turf is like taking a relaxing drive — with the coincidence that you also cut the lawn. That matters, because more fuel economy matched to a bigger fuel tank means more time in the field between breaks to fill up. Having made its new machine more efficient, Ferris has also gone out of its way to make it more comfortable, due to the inevitability of more hours ‘in the saddle’. Its engineers have taken another cue for modern autos — adjustable rear coilover-shocks and front independent adjustable shocks combine with a cushioned seat to make the IS 3200 Z one of the smoothest in the business. Even maintenance is easier, with plug-in diagnostics like a top-end Euro sedan. As more and more people realise that the old push mower is not going to tackle the sward on their lifestyle block or rural property, the zero-turn mower is growing in popularity. This move to a new fuel delivery technology means a big leap ahead for Ferris — from 1980s tech to the 21st century in one go! PROUD SPONSOR OF
