The world’s first robotic apple harvest taking place in Hawke’s Bay

It is the culmination of four years of working with US-based technology partner Abundant Robotics, which T&G’s parent company BayWa AG invested in two years ago as part of its strategy to expand digitisation across its agribusiness. “The company is delighted to have reached this significant milestone in the evolution of the global apple industry and for T&G’s home operations in New Zealand to be at the forefront,” says T&G Global chief operating officer Peter Landon-Lane. “Automation enables us to continue to scale to meet increasing global demand for food, in the face of current and future labour market challenges. We have been actively driving towards this for the past few years, including preparing our orchards to be robot-ready. “This is in addition to the investment our parent company BayWa AG has made in Abundant Robotics, reflecting confidence in the technology, which has been developed with the apple industry from the outset. “It will be some years before all T&G orchards are harvested in this way, but this first harvest with Abundant Robotics is an exciting step forward. “Apple-picking is tough physical work, and it is seasonal. Robotic technology

complements the work our people do with its ability to pick a large proportion of the fruit, much of it at the upper levels of the trees, reducing the physical demands of the work for our people as well as boosting productivity. “This will enable us to continue the exciting growth that is being achieved in the apple industry, without being constrained by the current shortages of labour.” High-density planting and specific pruning methods have been implemented at T&G’s Hawkes Bay orchards to make them suitable for Abundant Robotics’ technology. Canopy innovation and trialling of different ways of achieving automation compatibility have been a feature of orchard expansion initiatives since 2017. Abundant Robotics CEO Dan Steere says the company evolved from its research-based origins after delivering a proof of concept prototype in 2015 and approached the commercialisation of the technology as a global opportunity from the start. “Developing an automated apple harvester requires solving a number of complex technical problems in parallel, from visually identifying harvestable fruit and physically manipulating it to pick without bruising, to safely navigating the orchard itself.”

Check grazing plans Winter grazing practices have improved during the past few years, but Hawke’s Bay Regional Council will continue to monitor livestock farms and their land use practices this winter. “Poor performers are now more in the minority,” says the regional council’s central catchment manager, Brendan Powell. “Many people aren’t aware that farmers are already well into their planning and operations ahead of winter, with winter crops in the ground and growing. The approach they take with their grazing management of crops and stock is an important part of good farming practices.” One of the main reasons for doing a Farm Plan is to recognise where good management practices are currently in place on-farm and identifying where you could adopt extra ones to reduce risks to water quality from your farming operation. The Hawke’s Bay Regional Resource Management Plan allows winter grazing as a permitted activity, however, if not managed properly, winter grazing can fall into the category of a feedlot or feed pad for which resource consent may be required. A feedlot is described as an area of land on which animals are kept and fed, for more than 15 days in any 30-day period, where the stocking density or feedlot structure, such as a concrete pad, precludes the maintenance of pasture or ground cover. Strip grazing could be included under this definition if not managed appropriately. A feed pad is an area of land to which animals are

The regional council has carried out compliance flights over the past two years, to monitor operations for evidence of where winter grazing practices are having an impact on streams or don’t meet land use rules. HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

AN INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE by Ann van Engelen Lucy Collin comes from a sheep and beef farming family, and her parents breed Charolais cattle with 110 purebred animals on the property.

L

ucy recently achieved a long-held personal goal of being named the 2018 Allflex Senior Beef Ambassador at the Future Beef event in Feilding. The coveted award came with a cash prize that she used along with a scholarship from the Charolais Breeders New Zealand to pursue her love of Charolais and genetics, which led her to Canada for personal experience. “I spent two months working on a beef cattle stud in the isolated Canadian

village of Miami. It is situated in the province of Manitoba, and this Miami couldn’t be more different to its United States namesake,” says Lucy. “I didn’t see a single blade of grass the entire time I was there the ground was always covered by a foot of snow. Manitoba’s weather is not for the fainthearted, and the temperature sank to minus 25 degrees and did not climb above minus 10 during my stay — it was freezing. I took my thickest, warmest

clothes, but the icy Canadian winter is next level. “I competed at a major Charolais event and was scored the top international points, which was extremely exciting. We had to tackle a range of modules, including livestock judging and handling. “I was also invited to work at Steppler Farms in Miami, which is Canada’s second-largest Charolais breeder. I went back over after my exams in November — my job was to help prepare animals for the biggest cattle show in western Canada and the stud’s annual female sale.”

The top animal, a two-year-old heifer, sold for NZ$23,000 at the sale. “Steppler Farms has more than 900 registered Charolais cattle. They are hardy animals that live outside year-round. They are fed a mix of hay, straw, grass silage, maize and barley. The grain is grown on a nearby family farm and stored in massive silos. I had never seen silos that big until going to Canada,” said Lucy. “One of my jobs was to take straw bales and spread them under the trees, so the animals had a warm place to sleep. own Charolais cow for my 21st birthday. I want to breed my own stud cattle, and it is important to have good genetics. I want to use my biosecurity skills and qualifications to import and export semen,” she said. Lucy’s passion for the primary industries was sparked at a young age and as a weekday boarder at Iona College in Havelock North, along with fellow student Kate Ward, she helped establish the school’s first TeenAg club in 2013. “I chaired the club from years 11 to 13.

“We went on a couple of farm tours and arranged to have interesting guest speakers come and talk to us. It was a great club,” she said. “Whilst at school my teammate Megan Hassle and I made it through to the TeenAg Grand Final. I encourage other students to get involved in TeenAg and the Future Beef event because both organisations provide endless opportunities.” TeenAg clubs are run by NZ Young Farmers and funded by the Red Meat Profit Partnership.

I made friends with heaps of CCYA members. A number of them want to visit New Zealand, which is awesome. “Being named the 2018 Allflex Senior Beef Ambassador has opened up so many doors for me, to be honest, I didn’t realise just how many it would open up.” Those international connections will prove to be very valuable for Lucy who is in her fourth year studying a bachelor of security studies majoring in biosecurity at Massey University in Palmerston North. “I am focussing on biosecurity because I recently bought my

They also have a Canadian Charolais Youth Association. “Its objective is to strengthen the involvement of youth in breeding and connect enthusiasts from across the country. Every province has its own youth committee, and there are lots of young people interested in the breed.

by Ann van Engelen Joining the local Rose Society was an interest Dawn and Barry Eagle embarked upon in 1965 as something they could do as a young family.

“T

he Rose Society in New Zealand was founded in 1931 and has clubs across the country for people of all ages to become involved in and learn about rose growing,” says Dawn. “My late husband Barry and I were so pleased we brought our large block of land as growing roses became the best ‘hobby’ we could have found. It turned into a business, and we have met some of the nicest people from across the world and ventured to places we would never have gone. “We were young, and we had a new house, twin boys and a daughter and he was a busy school teacher. In November 1965 we went to a rose show and saw a notice to join the society and decided we could do it together. We have both

ended up being president and judges — it takes at least five years of sitting exams to become a national judge.” Over time the couple started a nursery and specialised in miniature roses. “The first World Rose Convention was in 1974, and we had moved into a new house and couldn’t afford to go, but knew international visitors were travelling the country so we would get the children dressed in their best Sunday outfits and take a big bouquet of our miniature roses out to the airport and give them to the travellers.” One couple, were Americans Ralph and Ann Moore. Ralph is known as the ‘father’ of the modern miniature rose. “They bred all the miniatures at that stage and invited us to stay with them. Ralph suggested we open a nursery as

no one was specialising in miniature roses here, so we did and never looked back.” Dawn is now the president of her local club. “We encourage members to learn the facets of hybridising and how to get successful plants from cuttings. We used to grow 100,000 cuttings annually in our nursery. I experimented during the years with some cuttings using rooting hormones on one half and nothing on the other half. When using the hormone I achieved 89 to 90 per cent rooted plants, but without only about five per cent rooted. “There have been many suggestions to grow from a cutting, such as putting them in a potato. I think this theory started when immigrants were travelling here on sailing ships from England and thought the potato would add moisture to the stem. Even if the rose sent out the odd root, it wouldn’t be able to grow into the potato flesh as the first roots are very soft and easily broken off. “I wrote two books, Eliza and the blue rose and Roses down under, and they are available online. I researched how people bought plants from across the world, surviving five months of heat and cold and often no fresh water.” Dawn’s theory is they wrapped the roots in moist moss and possibly an oiled paper and added a wee bit of scarce drinking water. “One of our first miniature roses was creamy white, and when it was first propagated we went into the nursery, and on the radio, Julio Iglesias was

March 2019

MERGE LIKE A ZIP DRIVE SAFELY What began as a hobby turned into a miniature rose growing business for Dawn who used to grow 100,000 cuttings annually singing his song Moonlight Lady, and we decided that was a good name. Julio did a concert many years later, and we took presented him with a bouquet. That rose was the New Zealand Rose Society favourite miniature for about 15 years.” Dawn says there is a lot of excitement when you cultivate a new rose as the seeds are sown in spring and the first flowers show around Christmas. “A lot are single roses, and the New Zealand market is not strong for them, so I throw out hundreds every year. You have to be ruthless — some people plant 250,000 seeds and get four that can be marketed. We sometimes take the flowers for granted. As

judges we learnt about the faults and what an ‘ideal flower’ looked like, so, unfortunately, years ago I would throw away the imperfect ones, this is a regret I have. I have around 150 in my garden to someone not feeling well even one imperfect rose, thrills them to bits. They don’t say take that rubbish away. Now I take them to the hairdresser or the butcher and brighten peoples’ days. “There has been a changing trend, and people are realising that the hybrid teas last longer than other varieties in the vase. “Roses will be around forever. It is such a special flower, have you ever found anyone who hasn’t really liked it.”

around road works

The unwanted pest has been detected in four Auckland areas since February 20, and this is the first time the beetle has been found in New Zealand. While it is unclear how the beetle arrived in New Zealand, the evidence to date suggests it may have been in the country for at least two years. The beetle is regarded as a serious pest overseas. It is known to feed on a wide range of broadleaf trees, including horticultural species such as avocado, and can spread fungal diseases. “Biosecurity New Zealand is currently assessing the potential risk from the beetle to New Zealand, says biosecurity surveillance and incursion manager Brendan Gould. “We need to know if New Zealand has a wider population, which is why we are asking the public to report any possible sightings. The beetle resides under bark, making it difficult to detect.

The granulate ambrosia beetle

A tell-tale sign is distinctive protrusions of frass (compacted sawdust) from bark that look like toothpicks. They are caused by the beetles pushing frass out of tunnels bored into the trees. Other symptoms include sap oozing from the tunnel entrances and branch dieback, says Mr Gould. “Officials are working with local authorities to identify the extent of the spread, including inspecting known host trees and placing lured traps around the detection sites. Biosecurity New Zealand has also directed the

ADVERTORIAL

Helping arthritic joints (Part 2) by John Arts

Many who contact me with joint problems have already tried joint health supplements with little or no success. We make what appear to be minor changes in dosages, and within a few months, most have significant benefits. Most joint supplements are heavily weighted towards glucosamine sulphate (GS). The reasons are that some of the original research into supplements that can help joints was mostly focussed on glucosamine. A second reason could be that glucosamine is relatively inexpensive. Older style formulations typically have something like a 4:1 ratio of GS to chondroitin sulphate (CS). The most recent research shows that the most effective compound is chondroitin, but glucosamine is also important. I started experimenting with different ratios of GS to CS. I found that a 1:1 ratio had a significant impact on joint health. I later began to review the scientific literature and found there were many studies on the benefits of CS. It is also worth noting that CS is available as a prescription medication in more than 20 countries including Europe. On the basis of this research, I reformulated my joint supplement that

a daily dose has 800mg of CS, 800 of GS and 200mg of a 95% curcumin (from turmeric) extract. In most cases, I start people on a double dose delivery 1,600 mg of CS and GS and 400mg of 95% curcumin. Scientific evidence is helpful in the understanding of disease processes. However, the real test is to whether something actually helps people. TO BUILD OR RENOVATE Building your own home There are laws you need to comply with when you are building whether you are hiring a builder or doing the work yourself. If you want to build your own house and you are not a licensed builder, you have to get an owner-builder exemption. Ask the council for information they have about your property they can tell you about local and regional plans, and how they might impact on your project. You might need to apply for resource consent or other permits specific to your area. The more you know, the better prepared you will be, your plans will be better informed, and you might save time and money by making a good building consent application. You could also avoid the need to make last minute changes or costly amendments during construction. Building on an empty section is more complicated than altering or renovating an existing house. It involves more paperwork and legal processes whether you build from scratch or move a house onto the section. When buying a section find out about and land use restrictions, district plan rules, resource consents and land survey and find out about your land and whether your ideas will work, including consents or permits you might need to meet legal restrictions. Once you have got an idea of what you want to build, you can also purchase a project information memorandum (PIM) from your council. A PIM can

help you decide whether your planning and building project is possible and practical, and will help you and your designer create effective plans. You might also find useful information in a land information memorandum (LIM), often purchased prior to buying a property. However, it’s not project-specific and may be out of date. Your most up-todate information will come directly from your council.

T O B U I L D O R R E N O VAT E

What lies beneath Some rural buildings that may have started life in pioneer days may by now need the foundations revisited because over time piles can move and deteriorate, causing them to fail. If the house was built in an era that used totara piles, an examination would determine if repiling has happened. New piles are either concrete or tanalised (H5) pine and are easy to spot. Make sure to check out that all the piles have been replaced. It is quite common that only a few piles are new, often just around the edge of the house. Sometimes all the piles move, but more often different piles move to different extents. It causes the house to twist, bow and crack, resulting in damage. The piles may have stopped moving or may be continuing to move. It all depends on the cause. If you are planning renovations, it pays to start with firm foundations or you are going to end up with an inferior result. That involves digging new piles down to a firm base and attempting to realign the house on this new foundation. To establish if there is a problem and to

what extent, ask the experts. A house inspector is a good start. Repiling is a major job, and different repilers use different methods. Some cut holes in the floor for access under the house, and some lift the entire building on jacks to make room to work. Ensure you have a building permit, other additions and changes to the house can be added to the same permit, so it pays to make plans in advance and discuss with council what permits and consents you need before starting any project. When doing other alterations to older homes, it is best to note that between the 1940s and the 1990s lots of building materials in New Zealand contained asbestos. Asbestos that’s in good condition, sealed or won’t be disturbed is relatively safe, but it can cause serious health problems if it’s damaged or you intend

to drill, sand or break it. It is almost impossible to identify asbestos by eye. The product can be found in houses, roof tiles, old panel type fences, sheds and cowshed material to name a few and is a significant health hazard. You are not allowed to remove or drill into it. If you think or know your house or building contains asbestos, talk to a professional asbestos removal company

before you begin any building work. Removing and disposal need to be done by a licensed asbestos removal licence holder under the 2016 regulations. There are two classes of asbestos removal licence Class A and Class B. An asbestos assessor provides air quality monitoring during removal work, inspects the finished job and provides a clearance certificate. A list of current asbestos removal licence holders and asbestos assessors is available on the worksafe.govt. nz website.

NECK PAIN?

Real Hope For Long Term Sufferers

After twelve years in New Zealand, Teeter Hang-Ups have now established a long term track record with thousands of people throughout New Zealand. Inversion New Zealand was started by Dave and Nancy Hare, Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from Degenerated Discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it. To him surgery was never an option as long as he still could walk, there was hope. “While on an overseas trip I discovered the Teeter Hang-Ups for the first time, when I tried it, the pain completely disappeared and I was pain free for about 30 minutes. I never would have believed it would fix me completely as specialists had told me it was irreversible, but I now knew I had a place to go every time I wanted some welcome relief”. To my surprise the more I used the table the longer the pain stayed away, until after nearly three months the pain was completely gone, after spending large amounts of money on everything I could find I finally had found something that worked and it was something I had never heard of sorting it out for me in a very short period of time.

Inversion NZ Ltd 0800 62 62 83 www.inversionnz.co.nz

Once I was sure it really worked I decided to introduce Teeter into New Zealand to help spread awareness of the one thing that truly helped me. Over the years I have helped tens of thousands of people in New Zealand get some serious relief and have seen results in not only backs, but necks, hips, knees, posture, circulation and lots more.

Inversion helps to: • Relieve Back Pain • Relieve Neck Pain • Relieve Muscle Tension • Stimulate Blood And Lymph Flow • Improve Posture • Increase Flexability

The results from what inversion does is nothing short of miraculous in areas we never thought possible, I believe there is a place for these in every single home regardless of if you have back issues or not. We have introduced them into a number of schools which are using them for their special needs children, the blood to the brain helps these kids and the results are excellent. What this means for the aging population is that it helps maintain the health of the brain as we all get older. I would not have believed the results had I not tried it for myself, and I would still be suffering to this day. This is why we travel the country showing people and letting them see for themselves how great it is and how life can be once your pain free again

IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW THE TEETER TABLE WORKS

Discs:

It uses gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, they rely on trans fer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to de-hydrate.

Posture:

Poor posture is one f the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; similar to the wheels out of alignment on your car. Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory, as it constantly pulls the muscles back to where they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and eventually come back into alignment, using the table daily, does not allow the muscle memory to pull them back out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there.

De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the de-hydration causes degen eration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. It separates the nerve roots far more effectively and This is pure logic, if a machine is out of returns quality of life

Muscles: A lot of pain is muscular, when

muscles are stressed they become tight which restricts the flow of blood and lymph through the muscles so toxins build up, Co2 and Lactic Acid. Traction opens up the muscles, Rhythmic Traction, is a gentle rocking motion that stimulates circulation and encourages blood flow through the muscles, which clears the lactic acid into your lymph system where it stimulates lymph flow and deals with it. Most people with serious neck issues see a large improvement after only one treatment.

alignment it does not last long, the only difference between the body and a machine is that the body is constantly repairing itself, however if the wear and tear on the body is greater than the body’s ability to repair itself, it is a slow decline. The Teeter slowly brings the body out of its decline and allows the body to repair itself, resulting in a far healthier life.

If you are serious about investing in your health and really sorting your issues out, come see us at one of our local roadshows, you have nothing to lose and chances are, a lot to gain.

After twelve years there is a growing number of medical professionals in New Zealand endorsing the use of traction as one of the best methods of treating back pain Here in New Zealand, Dr Giresh Kanji, is one of the countries most respected Pain Specialists. Dr Kanji has been using Teeters in his clinics for the past 6 years and has discovered how effective traction is especially on disc issue. Dr Kanji is the author of "Fix Your Back" and "Fix Your Neck Pain, Headache & Migraine", both books are in most bookstores. Dr Kanji discovered in the research that the disc is the most likely source of low back pain and Inversion showed the best results of all the trials conducted. Three studies showed a 60% reduction in pain and one showed a 75% reduction in surgery for people with disc prolapse. Dr Kanji endorses Inversion as the best method to manage back pain, he has personally been using the Teeter Inversion tables for his own low back pain, has Teeter Inversion tables at both of his clinics in Wellington (The Sports and Pain Clinic) and has had such success that he is now conducting New Zealand’s largest study on Inversion Therapy. In his own words, "these things are gold and inversion should be a first line treatment for low back pain”. *Dr Kanji does not recieve royalties from the sale of Teeter Inversion Tables

THINKING ABOUT HARVESTING?

Environment report reaction Forest Owners want clarity for what New Zealand plantation forestry is expected to deliver on climate change targets with the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment, Simon Upton issuing a report, which downplays the contribution of forestry in sequestering atmospheric carbon, and instead wants to drive down fossil fuel use. Forest Owners Association president, Peter Weir, says Simon Upton is contradicting the Productivity Commission’s report earlier this year, which pointed to planting trees serving as carbon sinks as the main means of getting New Zealand to carbon neutrality by 2050. “The PCE takes a different tack to the Productivity Commission. The PCE makes the argument that long-lived gases from the burning of fossil fuels should be treated differently to shortlived greenhouse gases from biological

sources. For instance, the Productivity Commission talked about the possible need for up to 2.8 million hectares of new planting to reach carbon neutrality. Simon Upton has a figure of 5.4 million hectares of new trees. That is a very big difference — both make the current One Billion Tree project aspirations look quite modest.” Mr Weir says that Mr Upton is correct in that forestry can’t offer climate change solutions indefinitely. “The industry has never suggested that we are a solution for all time, but in the immediate term, we just can’t wait for the development of a political will for a reduction in the use of fossil fuels, or the evolution of technical solutions to reduce livestock emissions. We don’t have time for either of those. Fast growing exotic plantation trees are a quick fix for getting our net emissions down in the critical next couple of decades.” Mr Weir says it is important to acknowledge and appreciate the large

“Your total harvesting and marketing solution”

difference in sequestration rates between exotic plantation forests and indigenous planting. “Exotics are many times faster at absorbing carbon. Simon Upton is right when he says landscape transformation has the potential to be disruptive and has to be managed carefully. “However, he and those who make policy should take on board that growing plantation forests is an income generating activity which, certainly for some regions, exceeds that of current marginal farming.” “Simon Upton is cautious that forestry may have a downside, which reduces its value in sequestering carbon. I have a real concern that this is going to be misunderstood in some quarters that we should abandon an expansion of tree planting altogether.” “It’s great to have the debate, but we do need some urgency in our government producing a carbon forestry policy. A critical first part of that is reform of the Emissions Trading Scheme.”

The devastating Port Hills fire showed how much indiscriminate and widespread damage a rural fire can inflict. Fighting these fires is dangerous and expensive. Predictions of drier summers point to a growing hazard. The risk is greatly reduced though, if you check out the local rules for lighting a fire – ‘Before you light, check it’s alright’. At different places, at different times, there will be complete fire bans. Or, you might be able to light a fire with a permit. Or, there might be no permit necessary. You need a clear area for the fire. Make sure you can, and do, put it out before you leave. So, ‘Before you light, check it’s alright’.

The power of three by Andy Bryenton

Kawasaki is no stranger to beating the competition with more power. On the road, their sports bikes are second to none when it comes to laying down horsepower in a game of superlative numbers. Winning hearts and minds in the rural backcountry take a different skill set. That’s why the key number for the new Kawasaki Mule Pro FXR isn’t in the hundreds or thousands — it’s the number three. It all begins with a three-cylinder 812cc liquid cooled engine. More cylinders mean smooth power delivery, and Kawasaki is the master of the triple layout. Bike fans will remember the 500cc Kawasaki Triple two-stroke from 1968, and the walloping power to weight ratio of that machine. While this is a four-stroke engine, and fuel injected, the advantages are similar, and the legacy carries across to this new platform and new purpose, mated to a CVT box with both high and low ratios and reverse. Rather than speed, the Mule is all about torque and the power to perform in rough terrain. It can tow more than 900kgs and pack 450 into its own generously sized flatbed. Carrying capacity reveals another incidence of the magic number three. The Mule Pro FXR can seat not two but three occupants in comfort,

1.5M please THE SIDE-BY-SIDE THAT’S MADE OF STEEL

$20,865 EX GST Special 100% finance rate offered by UDC

Some secondhand models also available.

Triple threat — the Kawasaki Mule packs in an extra crew member for those big tasks and excursions

carrying an entire work crew where they need to go. An extra pair of hands is nice, but many, as they say, make light work. Think about what could be accomplished with three experienced workers and all those hundreds of kilos of tools and equipment. Now imagine that capacity deployed pretty much anywhere on the farm. This go-anywhere capability is enhanced by a wide stance

for stability even on sloping terrain, and a shorter wheelbase for agility and a tiny turning circle. With a two metre wheelbase, the Mule Pro FXR can turn within just a hair more than four metres. That’s tight, and it makes it easier to access hard to reach places not only in the field but in the barn or the yard as well.
