Maggie Barry, Conservation Minister

“Twenty per cent of New Zealand will be covered in unwanted wilding conifers within 20 years if their spread isn’t stopped. They already cover more than 1.8 million hectares of New Zealand and until now have been spreading at about five per cent a year,” says Minister of Primary Industries Nathan Guy. “The National Wilding Conifer Control Programme was put in place in 2016 to prevent their spread and systematically remove them from much of the land already taken over.” Minister Guy says wilding conifer are incredibly hard to get rid of once they become established. “Prevention is the best form of management. Removing young seedlings before they start producing seeds costs less than $10 per hectare, but removing mature trees can cost over $10,000 per hectare.” Conservation Minister Maggie Barry says wildings compete with native plants and animals for sunlight and water and can severely alter natural landscapes. “The control programme is to protect our conservation land, iconic landscapes, tourist routes, high country farming heritage and sensitive water catchments from these invaders,” Ms Barry says. “Last year the Government committed an additional $16 million to wilding control over the next four years and

that’s on top of an $11 million already spent each year.” “Control work has involved targeted aerial spraying of individual trees in remote areas where there is light wilding infestation, and ground control in more heavily infested areas. The programme this year covers 14 initial priority areas, including extensive areas of conservation land and farmland in Central North Island, Marlborough, Canterbury, Otago and Southland.” Minister Barry says wildings are public enemy number one in the War on Weeds and top the Dirty Dozen 2017 list. “The Department of Conservation’s Community Fund has financed a number of community groups, trusts and organisations to carry out wilding conifer control ion work in 2016/17, complementing the work of the national control programme by reducing wilding conifer spread in low density areas.” The Wilding Conifer Control Programme has already started preliminary planning for 2017/18 control operations. The Programme is being implemented by the Ministry for Primary Industries, Department of Conservation, and Land Information New Zealand in partnership with other central government agencies, iwi groups, local government, forestry and farming industries, landowners, researchers and community trusts and organisations.

Helping antibiotic resistance

New Zealand’s native fungi could hold the answer to antibiotic resistance crisis amid growing concern over the need to combat antibiotic resistance. Considered one of the greatest public health threats of the modern age — a campaign has been launched to determine if a collection of fungi, unique to New Zealand and the Pacific, could hold the key to discovering new antibiotics. Cure Kids, the nation’s leading charitable funder of child health research, has kicked off its ‘Fight Against Superbugs’ crowdfunding campaign. “Countries around the world have been asked to act now. New Zealand may be a small nation, but our native fungi and our unique biodiversity could provide an answer to this global problem,” says Cure Kids Research director Tim Edmonds. “If we don’t act now and discover new medicines, it is predicted that within a generation, antibiotic resistance will overtake cancer as the leading cause of premature death worldwide. “We know that antibiotic resistance is an issue many New Zealanders are concerned about. Particularly for those children at greatest risk of infections.” The ‘Fight Against Superbugs’ campaign aims to raise $250,000 to support pioneering research by scientists at the University of Auckland

who will study fungi from a collection by Landcare Research. Fungi are a proven source of antibiotics, such as penicillin, and most antibiotics in clinical use are from soil microbes. Microbiologist, Dr Siouxsie Wiles, head of the Bioluminescent Superbugs Lab at the University, and her team aim to mine 1000 prioritised fungi from the collection of 10,000 over the next 12 months to identify pathogenfighting properties. Dr Wiles’ team have piloted the approach, screening 300 fungi, using a cultivated form of bacteria that’s been engineered to glow when alive. When the bacteria stop glowing, it signals potential antimicrobial qualities in the fungi which then undergo more tests. “We are really hopeful that we will make rapid progress in our search for new antibiotics. Children are at increased risk and more vulnerable to infectious diseases. We are particularly hopeful we will identify fungi that are able to kill the bacteria responsible for many of the serious diseases rife in New Zealand such as Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA),” says Dr Wiles. “While current antibiotics have proved highly effective in the defence

Staph survivor Addison Kitching and Dr Siouxsie Wiles in the lab

against infectious diseases, common bacteria regularly develop new strains that resist these antibiotics.” Dr Wiles recently published her book ‘Antibiotic resistance — the end of modern medicine?’ Which explores the threat to humans, agriculture and

animals from superbugs and antibiotic resistance. She says antimicrobial resistance threatens to undo many of the medical achievements of the last century. To join the ‘Fight Against Superbugs’ visit www.curekids.org.nz

Geoff and Nicola Wright create award winning wines at Wright’s Vineyard and Winery with winemaking skills coming down through the generations from Geoff’s Croatian family.

T

he couple won the Hill Laboratories Harvest Award at this year’s East Coast Ballance Farm Environment Awards. A third generation winemaker, originally Geoff was a chartered accountant but driven by the same pioneering spirit as his Croatian greatgrandfather Stanko Jurakovich, Geoff left

Auckland in 1999 with a dream to own his own vineyard and winery. Stanko immigrated to New Zealand as a child and secured his winemaker’s licence in Kumeu, Auckland, on March 14, 1931. In 1944, Stanko’s land was sold to San Marino Vineyards, which is now forms part of the well known winery Kumeu River, belonging to the Brajkovich

Harvest time is a family affair for the Wright family family. Nicola is a qualified lawyer and moved to Gisborne in 2004 to meet Mr Wright, who she hoped would be a winemaker. “I didn’t realise I would have to plant the vineyard out myself and although I wasn’t blessed with a green finger, I do have a pioneering spirit, am a risk taker and believe in myself,” she says. She is in charge of marketing and distribution and also has her own criminal legal practice. The couple base their business on hard work, sweat and Kiwi ingenuity and their enthusiasm and energy exhibited for their family, business and organic principles were noted by the Award’s judges. “They don’t walk the talk they run it,” the Award judges said. The business has three sites — the winery and a coastal vineyard on the Wharerata Road at Manutuke and valley and terrace vineyards in Ormond Valley Road. The main grape varieties are Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir.

“We harvest our grapes by hand and then produce our wine in our winery,” says Geoff. “We harvest just under 100 tonne and produce just under 100,000 bottles a year. Our approach is not on quantity but sustainable quality. The three vineyards are certified organic and biodynamics is practised on them.” The couple have a great understanding of the soil and its biodiversity and monitor it regularly to deal with any issues that come along before they become significant. “We established the first vineyard on bare land in Ormond Valley in 2005 and used grapevine cuttings sourced in 2003. While establishing the vineyard, we worked during the week in their professions to fund the venture. “Weekends were spent working the land and we kept an area of native plantings and a pond that we are developing into a wetland. We later bought the valley and coastal vineyards and converted them. “In 2009 we purchased an under-vine

hilip’s great-grandfather and two of his grandfathers previously farmed some of the blocks now under the Maraetara umbrella. The Holt’s were named the supreme winners at the East Coast Ballance Farm Environment Awards this year, won the WaterForce Integrated Management Award, and also shared the Farm Stewardship Award, which is supported in partnership with the QEII National Trust and the New Zealand Farm Environment Trust. The judges said Maraetara is in a tough farming environment with one of the lowest rainfalls in the region. “This property experiences drought, floods, weeds and the challenge of lifestyle neighbours and it is harder to farm than it looks. The land includes 88ha of pines, 14ha of alternative species, 21ha of planted natives, an 18ha QE II National Trust covenant and an 184ha open space covenant.

In 1982 Philip and Robyn took over the original family farm of 290ha and as different neighbouring farms were subdivided the couple purchased numerous titles over the years. Maraetara now includes 18 titles and they lease another 145ha locally and a 200ha farm at Rangiwahia. “This has helped us to build scale and options for succession for our children Catherine, Philip and Alexander, and it also means we have about 70

neighbours and only three of them are farmers,” says Philip. The proximity to town has its challenges, but the family have embraced the positives and Philip proactively tries to break down the urban/rural divide and has regular visitors to the farm. “We have an open gate philosophy when it comes to schools and conferences, walking groups, garden rambles, horse treks, motorbike fundraisers and volunteer planting groups,” says Philip. “In some ways I feel the social responsibility of the connection between rural and urban getting wider. I think it is important the urban people get an opportunity to visit a farm and see what goes on.” Maraetara carries 3,639 mixed-age Coopworth ewes, 1,161 two-tooth ewes and 1,385 ewe hoggets and the farm produces 35,000kg of wool. “We have 310 Angus breeding cows plus 167 R2 heifers, 108 R1 steers and 115 R2 steers as well as 273 mixed age Boer-cross does in the goat operation with 152 goats sold last year,” says Peter. “The goats were first introduced to the farm in the 1950s because of the weed issues the property has. “We also take every opportunity to collect and store water, including a nine million litre stock water dam, with 150 gravity-fed troughs and more than 70 ponds/dams — all of which we clean out regularly. “Water has always been the biggest limiting factor for Maraetara but now

we’re in a better position with capital inputs. The farm has traditionally been a dry farm with very little natural water so we’ve had to spend a lot of money to get water in every paddock, but once you have the water, the opportunity to fence off northerly and southerly faces gives you more options. “Having so much shade on the farm, thanks to the trees, also reduces the need for as much water.” Philip uses his love of projects to aesthetically improve non-productive parts of the property. “There is a seven-hectare dry, easterly cliff face overlooking the estuary which has been planted with thousands of native plants and we have built a small

shelter that we have nicknamed the ‘room with a view’. “We don’t have a holiday house or boat, this is why we’ve built our ‘room with a view’. It’s our time off the farm, but we’re actually just going out the back and appreciating what we have.” Philip says he loves the farm’s early history. “I love getting the chance to tell young Maori people about Tara. “Tara’s marae is an historic Ngati Kahungunu site dating back to the 1350s. For my first 20 years farming here, Tara’s Marae was just always there, but as I have grown older I have realised how important it is and how it has to be preserved.”

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES ADVERTORIAL

ADVERTORIAL

Aloha from Hawaii!

Should I take Coenzyme Q10?

Aloha — greetings, regards, kindness, compassion, affection, love. What a wonderful word that portrays so much beauty and gratitude.

Part 2 Most people make all the Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) they need. Some however should take extra as a supplement. CoQ10 is made in your liver from the same enzyme that makes cholesterol. This is why drugs that reduce cholesterol can restrict CoQ10 by as much as 50%. This can reduce the amount of energy made especially in organs and muscles and is why I recommend people on cholesterol medication take 100–200mg of rapid absorption CoQsol® each day. I recently spoke to a client who had experienced a lot of muscle pain and stiffness while on statins. After just a week on CoQ10 the pain had completely gone. I generally find it takes 1–2 months to restore muscle function and energy. What makes CoQ10 so special is its ability to carry electrons. This enables CoQ10 to move hydrogen electrons within your cell mitochondria to make energy molecules called ATP. This ATP is how your body works. Inadequate CoQ10 levels reduce energy output and this is felt as tiredness and often as muscle weakness.

This ability to carry electrons also makes CoQ10 an excellent antioxidant. It can donate to free radicals their missing electrons preventing them from stealing electrons leading to cell and tissue damage. In particular it protects circulating LDL cholesterol from being damaged by free radicals. This is the first step in the process of forming plaques that block arteries. There is some good research suggesting increasing CoQ10 can be helpful for people with neurodegenerative problems such as Parkinson’s. I will generally add additional CoQ10 either as the patented CoQsol® or my specialised MTQ10. Most people feel a real difference within 1–2 months. Give me a call if you need more information. Did you know that the Hawaiian language has only 13 letters?! My first trip to Hawaii was 14 years ago. I enjoyed a seven-night cruise around the Hawaiian Islands and it was a fabulous way to sample the destination, coupled with a few nights pre and post at Waikiki Beach. A cruise is the perfect holiday option to relax and recharge. Your ship becomes your floating hotel so you need only unpack once. You arrive in a new city almost every morning and on some cruises you even stay overnight in port so you can truly immerse yourself in the destination. There’s always a right ship for the right traveller and having experienced nine cruises myself plus inspected and had lunch on countless ships, you can be sure I’ll pair you well with the right cruise experience for you.

So, here I am again now, sampling some amazing hotels in Honolulu, loving the beach, snorkelling with turtles, hiking up Diamond Head, shopping up a storm and exploring the island of Oahu in our rental car. I’ve collected lots of insider tips from the locals — and I’m willing to share if you’re interested! Each of the Hawaiian islands offers a slightly different experience so it’s ideal to combine a few in the one trip. We can arrange inter-island flights in conjunction with your international air ticket from New Zealand. Uncommon sense

Ministry for the Environment and statistics NZ recently released a damning report showing increasing nitrogen and phosphorus in a percentage of NZ rivers. Surprise surprise! this whole problem of excess nitrates and phosphorus in our rivers have never been called to account. I am not talking about farmers here, although they are the ones copping the flak. I am talking about the major NPK fertiliser companies who sell 90% of the phosphorus and nitrogen in NZ and have been for the past 20-plus years. NZ farmers have been brainwashed into thinking that all this phosphate and nitrogen is needed to be profitable. Have these environmental alarmists ever stopped to think that these major fertiliser companies have become billion dollar industries from propaganda to push the sales of the very products these guys make. They have assumed the responsibility to educate students attending NZ educational institutions into the NPK propaganda machine who then go out and advise farmers to push it on. The sooner the proponents of environmental improvement refocus on the cause, the faster these challenges will be achieved.

There are great changes beginning where farmers are utilising real science rather than following the NPK accepted principles that grow grass but don’t strictly follow scientific principles. There is accurate data and case studies demonstrating amazing results including better animal health, higher production and higher profit with as little as 80kg N/ha applied, which is the sort of targets we should be seeking. General farmer usage would be around 200 to 250kg N/ha. Education is the best way forward rather than the threat of enforcement of more rules and reduction of our great farming future. This education has got to start with the consultants who are talking to farmers and giving them the advice. Consultants are the very people who can affect farmers change because they are who farmers trust and seek advice from. Currently, this radical change to drastically reduce nitrogen and phosphate use unnecessarily is coming from farmers who are entrepreneurs and can think outside the square. These very

farmers have gone out of their way to reeducate themselves and have found a better path. The biggest challenge to this change is coming from their trusty consultants who put doubt into this new path. If farmers and consultants feel challenged to act, please contact me.

David Law, Managing Director of Forward Farming Consultancy

Brainwashed The clean rivers plan, which is sweeping the country, is to drastically reduce nitrogen applications on farm, based on historical data. For farmers hell-bent on trying to mitigate too many changes in management in future will be looking at management now to alter that data. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to deduct that one such tool would be to drastically increase nitrogen use now therefore boosting historical data, which will be used to determine their future allocation. This whole scandal has arisen because farmers have been brainwashed into thinking that urea grows grass and that profitability will drop correspondingly as that nitrogen is reduced. This new environmental report is calling for a drastic reduction in cow numbers, which would be akin to the idea of drastically reducing cars to cut the road toll! Some common sense is needed here, and I would hate to see people with this line of thinking being able to determine the direction of our farming future. It sickens me to see that the culprits of

Fire equipment preparedness It takes ‘just two minutes’ from smolder to disaster. When fire strikes it is too late to plan for the emergency. Only with preparedness and a sound safety programme will you be ready in the event of a possible disaster. Fire Equipment Hawke’s Bay Ltd was started by managing director Donna O’Connor more than nine years ago, with the aim of providing Hawke’s Bay families and businesses with a local option, at a competitive price. Sales and service consultants, Trevor Keighley and Damon Rangitaawa, will give all the advice you need to ensure you, your family, staff, equipment and buildings are appropriately covered. By taking preventative action and having the appropriate extinguisher

available in the right place, and ensuring it is in good working order, will reduce the impact if a fire has been discovered in the early stages of ignition. Just having a fire extinguisher is not enough. Do you and your staff know how to use it? When was it last serviced? Can you be 100 per cent certain that it has not been discharged or lost pressure through the years? The company provides new equipment or pressure testing and recharging of

Providing auction opportunities Quentin and Ali de Groot took over the ownership of Kauri House Auctions in April, purchasing the company from Peter Maidens. “We are an auction house and hold weekly auctions specialising in general items, estate clearances, tools and farm equipment. We also hold antique auctions approximately every quarter,” says Ali. Kauri House Auctions provides an estate clearance service using its furniture removal staff and company removal truck. A vendor number is assigned and goods are sold on behalf. “This often solves the dilemma people have of not knowing what to do with excess furniture and items they are left with and do not require,” says Ali. “If you are moving house or have an estate to clear, we can organise our professional staff at AA Hawke’s Bay Removals to assist. We offer a quick and efficient furniture and household removal service, making relocating easier for our clients. Kauri House Auctions holds regular weekly auctions every Thursday at 10am. Call in the professionals

by Andy Bryenton

The recent tropical storms which have battered the central North Island have thrown the issue of disaster preparedness into sharp focus. Here in the North the toll was less severe than elsewhere, but disasters can take many forms. It’s not just the weather which poses a threat, and some disasters can be easily averted before they happen. At the major end of the scale, preparing to get through major events such as cyclones is all about forward planning. Check out civildefence.govt.nz to find out what you need in a survival kit should evacuation prove necessary or if you’re stuck in your home without electricity. For those of us in rural areas, it’s a good idea to have power on demand. A modern battery pack can keep your phone and laptop charged as well as jump start your vehicle — or a generator could prove more than useful in a prolonged power outage. For many, though, it’s the little disasters which prompt the question

‘who can we call?’ Far more common than storms or earthquakes are incidents such as breakdowns, broken windows, busted appliances and stained carpets. For many of these, the solution begins with knowing which local tradespeople will come to you in an emergency, or where to go for specialist services such as automotive key cutting or gas heater repairs. The temptation certainly exists to have some small fixes around the home seen to by a handy mate or simply sorted DIY. But it’s important to stay within the new building and renovating rules even in the circumstance of necessary repairs

— electrical work has to be signed off by a qualified electrician, for example, while plumbing and draining need to be attended to by a real plumber, for the sake of insurance and in the instance of reselling property. A paper trail of accredited repairs means peace of mind.

On the farm, where broken machinery costs in time and profits, knowing who to call to replace that tyre or fix that broken implement is even more vital. With calving season on the way having a reliable quad bike or UTV in the shed and a reliable livestock vet on call is of paramount importance. Downtime at any

W H O A R E YO U G O I N G T O C A L L ? other time of the year, such as during silage cutting or maize planting is costly and annoying, but it can be a matter of life and death on a cold winter’s morning during calving. Talk to the machinery and vehicle pros now to ensure first-time starts when the pressure is on. The other aspect of weathering the knocks of day-to-day life is insurance — because major disasters around the home are quickly made to disappear by a good insurance company. With so many variables, it’s important to tailor a policy that fits your lifestyle. Remember — many things are fully covered by insurance, which you may not expect. An example — if an unsightly stain mars your carpet and can’t be shifted by commercial cleaners, your insurance may very well cover replacing the carpet for that entire room. The trick here is to have seasoned experts match the colour, pattern and orientation as best as possible — and to ask for advice before deploying home cleaning alternatives. Similarly, those cracked windscreens, chips and dents can be made to disappear by an alliance between a trusted insurer and your local panelbeaters, painters and auto

glass experts. Upping the ante, what happens if there’s a disastrous accident with vital farming equipment? Talk to an insurance broker about the best value for full coverage before disaster strikes, and you’ll be sure that help is at the end of the phone no matter what. Living in rural New Zealand comes with a huge amount of bonuses — wonderful scenery, clean air, the outdoors life and strong communities. But the trade off can be isolation from the services and trades that city dwellers take for granted. Whether you’re new in an area or a long-term resident, keeping up with the right people to call for minor emergencies is a must. Thankfully, we have plenty of mobile professionals who are ready to jump into the ute, load up the digger or pack tools into the van to see things right. These pages provide a handy directory of such professionals in the North, ready to swing into action when help’s needed. With forward planning and a knowledge of who to call, even the most unexpected problems can be chopped down to size. After all, without the stress it’s hardly a disaster at all!

Custom satisfaction by Andy Bryenton

Ford’s record of success with the Ranger ute rolls on into 2017, with the big blue oval brand preparing themselves for another blockbuster visit to Mystery Creek in the mid-year. But there’s something else afoot before the Field Days fun, and it’s caused a literal blackout. Ford has always been big sponsors and fans of the All Blacks, and ahead of the forthcoming British Lions tour it has released a special edition of both the Ranger and the Everest sports utility, all tricked out in a new, deeper shade of midnight black and all garnished with extra add-ons such as nudge bars, interior detailing, roll bars and massive mag wheels. The overall impression of the FX4 Ranger is of a machine as solidly planted as the All Black’s defensive line and as aggressive as their forwards. That’s entirely the idea, of course — and it feeds into an emerging trend for the new generation of ute owners to want something different. When muscle cars were all the rage in the 1970s, nobody wanted a stock model off the yard. Everyone wanted the limited edition, tuned, pinstriped, candy-flake paint job hot-rod version. It’s becoming a similar world in the top end of the emerging Kiwi super-ute culture, one which mirrors the truck modding exploits of America’s F150 and Dodge Ram owners. Not content with being one of a huge number of drivers who now take advantage of the comfort and space of

the 21st century light commercial by making it their daily ride — and thus blending into the crowd — those with the need to be seen are embracing special editions like the FX4 with both hands. It’s not just this big black tribute to the ABs which is so coveted. Before Ford’s designers added the custom blackout to their top selling ute there have been others taking the initiative. Customised ‘stealth’ edition Ranger utes appeared on the North Shore, boosting the image above and beyond that of the factoryspecced Wildtrak. Then a series of West Coast Edition Rangers were created in Dargaville, in the West Kaipara, with a variety of combinations of LED lamps, bars, mags, tyres, detailing and interior finishes. So far, no two have been the same, and they have been sold as far away as the West Coast — of the South Island! With other brands such as Nissan releasing special edition utes too —

Not content with being one of the pack, many Ranger drivers now demand custom special editions to really stand out

witness the tough-as-nails Barbarian custom Navara — New Zealand has a new status symbol. The custom ute — and by extension, the custom Ford Ranger — is the new king of the highway.
