Heretaunga Plains water hearings The Hawke’s Bay Regional Council’s water catchment plan change hearing for the Heretaunga Plains waterways began in Hastings — nine years after this process began. The plan proposes to add new objectives, policies and rules to the Regional Resource Management Plan to better manage water quality and quantity specific to the Tutaekuro, Ahuriri, Ngaruroro and Karamu catchments. The work behind it first started in 2012 and has been known throughout as the TANK Plan. Hawke’s Bay Regional Council’s chief executive James Palmer said the hearings are “a milestone in the TANK Plan process with a range of views and presentations from submitters on the extraordinarily difficult and complex issues at the heart of how we use land and water in Heretaunga. “This plan change is significant for everyone who lives in and around Hastings and Napier. Water is the lifeblood of our environment, our community and our economy, and we have much to do to repair the damage we have done James Palmer, Hawke’s Bay Regional Council’s chief executive to our waterways.” It is the first Resource Management the TANK Group, with more than 40 Act planning hearing to be held by Hawke’s meetings held. Livestock scientist appointed

MAY 2021

A well-known livestock scientist Dr Jason Archer has been appointed to the role of Genetics Specialist — Livestock with Beef + Lamb New Zealand. General manager Dan Brier says he is thrilled that Jason is joining the team, bringing with him a wealth of knowledge and experience in animal genetics and breeding. Prior to joining B+LNZ Genetics, Jason, who has an agricultural science degree and a PhD in animal breeding and genetics, worked as a consultant with AbacusBio. He had previously worked with AgResearch for 12 years. While specialising in genetics, Jason has worked with broader farm systems and thinks strategically to solve problems and ensure solutions are applicable on-farm. “Jason is very highly regarded in the sector and is well known to many farmers with a strong background in beef cattle and deer breeding and management. He has had over 25 years’ experience working in Australia and New Zealand, as well as with international beef breed associations in the USA and Canada,” says Mr Brier. His role at B+LNZ Genetics will involve providing direction to both sheep and beef programmes, providing a key link between the science, data strategy and practical application of genetics across the industry.

“Jason will work across New Zealand, including with the dairy industry and internationally, to ensure our farmers get the best bang for their buck. “More importantly, Jason will ensure that the needs of our breeders and commercial farmers are met, and they have the tools they need to continue to produce some of the world’s best naturally-raised red meat now and into the future.”

Dr Archer sees his role as thinking strategically to determine the industry’s future requirements and shaping what needs to be done to meet those. “I’m very much looking forward to talking to industry and farmers, seeing the big picture and helping to shape and deliver our programmes to provide as much value to our industry as possible.” Jason will be based out of B+LNZ Genetics’ Dunedin office.

Unity brings success by Ann van Engelen Brothers Manoj Kumar and Sumit Kamboj have proven that being teachable pays off as they took out the 2021 New Zealand Share Farmers of the Year award.

M

anoj holds a Bachelor in Agriculture, while Sumit has a Diploma in Business Management and level four in agriculture. “We had a small family farm in India, and when we finished school, I thought I should go to another country and explore agriculture,” says Manoj. “I came to New Zealand as an agriculture student, and Sumit followed six months later to study business management. “We didn’t want to rely on our parents financially, so we worked in a kiwifruit orchard. We used to milk 8–10 cows by hand in India and were very surprised when we saw our first big dairy farm here. We discovered the New Zealand

dairy farming system is totally different from back home in India, and it really appealed to us. We talked to the farm owners, and they explained you could go into contract and sharemilking and work up to farm ownership. “I got a job on the farm, and after six months, the farm manager left, and I was promoted to the position. Later Sumit was offered the farm assistant position alongside me. “In India, it takes one person to manage 10 cows as we mostly milk by hand. We found the farming scale here huge, but easier to manage the large herds due to the technology we use. “The farm owner helps us through our systems, and we love discussing our Brothers Manoj Kumar and Sumit Kamboj began their farming life in India and are thankful their farm employers for giving them the opportunity of a farming career

ideas with other farmers. We came here with nothing, and we have found talking to others is the best way to learn. “After managing one season, a contract milking position came available with our employers, and then Sumit went into farm management. After a couple of seasons, we were offered contract milking on another of their farms and a sharemilking position as well. “We have quite a big staff and milk 760 cows. One farm is a system two, and one is a system four. On the system four, we use maize silage, palm kernel and grass silage. “On the system two, we use a bit of palm kernel during winter and grass silage. When we first arrived, the system two farm achieved 370kgMS per cow, and we have lifted that to 420kgMS using the extra supplement. “We have achieved 530kgMS per cow up from 390kgMS on the system four. We do nine weeks mating and calve over eight weeks. Our herd is Friesian Kiwi Cross, and we AI the tail end with short gestation Kiwi cross. “When my parents came here to visit, mum cried all night as we had no neighbours, and she thought we were isolated here in Paihiatua/Eketahuna.

When she met the farm owners, she was happy and realised we are fine. “We have made lots of friends, and New Zealand is now our home. We enjoy attending farming discussion groups and networking with others in the industry. We wouldn’t be where we are without our employers who gave us the support and opportunity. “Giving a sharemilking opportunity to a migrant was a risk they were willing to take to help us. They didn’t know us when we applied, and we understand that they gave us a chance. “Their help has helped us get to where we are today. “We focus on minimising waste and increasing the farm efficiency. We have worked really hard, and it has paid off. “When we went to Hamilton for the awards, we didn’t have a speech ready as we thought if we got a merit we would be very lucky, as all the regional winners were outstanding. When we were announced as the national winners, we were surprised. “We are very immersed in the Kiwi culture now. “We used to go home nearly every year, or our parents would come here,

Tori Banta has had a love of horses since she was young with her passion leading her to take up the wild Kaimanawa horse challenge.

“G

rowing up we always had a horse. When I was 14 years old I got a tricky little pony. The training method I was using wasn’t working for him and a friend mentioned Parelli Natural Horsemanship,” says Tori. “That led me to study at the Parelli ranch in Florida when I was 17. In 2011 I came home as a Parelli instructor and I eventually established Tori Lee Equestrian. “I teach horsemanship, training and start young horses. “When I was at the Parelli ranch I met Canadian rider Lauren Barwick and I went to the London Paralympics as her groom. I also attended the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio with the Canadian team.”

Tori has started around 50 horses in the last 10 years as well as helping with other horse work. “Over recent years my students challenged me to take on one of the Kaimanawa horses from the annual muster. I had no desire to train a wild horse, but this year the opportunity came up to be a part of the Freedom to Friendship Kaimanawa Challenge. “The Kaimanawa Heritage Horses Association has a group of professional trainers that they endorse. The trainers adopt a horse to care for and I was chosen as a wild card trainer. You have six months to tame and train the horse. “I decided it is time to take up the challenge and try my hand at putting the

principals that I use with domesticated horses to the wild horses. I received two horses, my one and another came as his mate, which I am taming for a friend. The basic principles I teach are the concept of horses communicating with each other through facial expressions and body language. They see us as predatory and I am excited to see if what I am teaching is accurate. “Working with a horse that has had no human interaction before is a challenge. As much as I tame and train horses, they are going to teach me more. I can then pass what I learn to other people. It is like a little circle where I am helping the horses but they are helping me and that is very special. “Adopting the Kaimanawa horses is important as people don’t realise what a special breed they are. They have been in the Kaimanawa ranges in the Central North Island for around 150 years and are completely wild. They see army personnel working

in the area but have never interacted with people.” Tori says that the Kaimanawa wild horses and the Ahipara wild horses in Northland are some of the only wild horse herds in New Zealand. “Keeping them wild is a special thing between the Kaimanawa Heritage Horses Welfare Society, the New Zealand Defence Force and DOC. They are trying to give them the best possible life but need to keep them healthy. “The horses are one of the best managed wild herds in the world. In my opinion, we are doing a great job of caring for the breed without interfering with them. The annual muster is an important part of the process although it upsets people. “The reality is the two horses that I have from the recent muster are the healthiest horses I have seen. That comes down to the fact that they have enough feed and roam the land. Having the space to wander is important for A

them. If you overcrowd that area they can’t find enough food and become unhealthy. Before the herd was managed they came out in poorer condition with issues such as excessive lice. That is nowhere near as bad now. Keeping the herd numbers down by people adopting them means the ones left behind don’t have to struggle for resources and thrive. “This year there were 506 horses counted and they needed to get the figure down to around 300 for the optimum number. “They try to find homes for around 100 horses, but due to Covid the muster didn’t happen last year, so this year 200 homes needed finding. “KHH and DOC decided to only muster those they had homes for, so only 125 were removed and none were

culled. Although they are taken out of their natural habitat, they do thrive in domestication if that initial process is done kindly. “You need to take it slowly to let them adjust, and understand they have never been behind fences or close to humans. Staying in the Kaimanawas is not a reality considering the space that is there. “It is a special thing to be a part of helping them to adjust to what we see as normal but is foreign to them. Kaimanawa horses are a super special breed and to lose them because of mismanagement would be such a shame.” Read more about Tori’s experience with the Kaimanawa horses next month.

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES BUSINESS PROFILE

Fencing in Hawke’s Bay

Gordon Hansen has been involved in the fencing industry for more than 30 years, offering a range of services for residential properties, farm projects, security fencing, retaining walls, bulldozing and digger work. “I began shepherding when I was young to pay my way through Lincoln University to study. I then went to Zimbabwe and worked as a site manager on a $23 million building site. “I had to learn all sorts of skills such as compaction and engineering. Some experience I gained was placing columns that were 2.2 metres wide and 8 metres deep into the ground. They were dug by hand with a shovel in 40-degree heat. “After getting in the World Cup squad, I left Zimbabwe and decided to relocate to Hawke’s Bay. The farmer I started shepherding for when I was young gave me fencing work, and my business started from there. “My brother was training to be a stock buyer and was doing fencing on the side to make money. I ended up finishing his job, and the business continued to grow. My two brothers are fencing as well. “Now I have a dozen staff — running three gangs at present. Sometimes, I break the gang up to four to cover our work schedule. Call us for all your fencing needs. We do retaining walls and pile driving for floating ribraft floors. We can ram poles down until they set, and we do engineered retaining walls as well as swale walls. These soak up the impact of a slip on properties or roadways. Our

I enjoy the deer work and understand deer yards and the logistics of keeping them in and out of a property. “We can complete sheep and cattle yards as well and can rip out the old fence lines and replace with new, which is important with salt air contamination on Hawke’s Bay properties. “Road stabilisation is also another service we offer for roads and farm blocks.”

Helping osteoarthritis: Chondroitin sulphate by John Arts, Abundant Health

A significant research study (Wildi et al, 2011) that confirmed the benefits of high dose chondroitin sulphate (CS) for joints affected by osteoarthritis. This week we dig a little further. I have no doubt that the correct dose of high-grade CS is the most important natural compound to help joints affected by osteoarthritis. As an example, I have been helping a man with osteoarthritis in both knees. The pain levels had become quite debilitating. We started with a booster dose of 1,600mg of high-grade chondroitin with the same amount of glucosamine and 400mg of high potency curcumin (from turmeric). After three months, the pain level had significantly reduced and is now mobile again. More recent research from the British Medical Journal (May 2017) compared high-grade chondroitin with common anti-inflammatory medication and found that 800mg of CS was beneficial. Researchers commented: “This compelling benefitrisk profile, in light of the known clinical risks associated with chronic usage of NSAIDS and paracetamol, underscores the potential importance

of pharmaceutical-grade [chondroitin sulfate] in the management of knee [osteoarthritis], especially in the older population requiring longterm treatment.” The question is, how can it help? What does it do to arthritic joints? Researchers have found that CS has multiple benefits. Firstly it helps regulate inflammatory processes within the joint capsule. Secondly and more importantly, it helps specialised cells that reside in cartilage called chondrocytes. CS improves the ability of chondrocytes to secrete and repair cartilage. This comes as no surprise as CS is an important component of cartilage. I have worked with so many people with osteoarthritis that I am genuinely surprised if we cannot get an improvement within three months. It has proved to be a challenging task given the range of very demanding terrain presented on farms throughout the country. Moreover, of course, many farmers push the capabilities of a sideby-side to the limit and beyond, and servicing is probably done when the vehicle breaks. These facts are taken into account with the design of side-by-sides. However, the balance is in producing something that is very strong while at the same time does not have the characteristics of a tank. In the case of the Tuatara side-by-side, our approach has been to produce a machine that is primarily constructed of steel for the strength, as opposed to plastic, which becomes brittle and breaks easily when exposed to ultraviolet light and is expensive to replace. We have also placed an emphasis on simple engineering and ease of access to componentry so that our vehicles are easy to service, even by the customer, and the time spent in doing so is considerably reduced. The process of introducing a new side-by-side to the market has come with its challenges in terms of selecting the best and most robust components for the vehicle. The benefit that we have over competing multinational companies is that if we have a component or design aspect that is regularly failing, we have free-range to make changes and design improvements. We have listened to our customers, and many of our best

Animal health – get distress notifications, to help identify sick cows earlier. Management – monitor your entire farm’s wellbeing, including rumination changes.

MENTION THIS AD FOR 15% OFF ALL EXTERIOR CLEANING JOBS!

by Andy Bryenton

When the original hot hatchbacks of the 1980s hit the scene, they were a breath of fresh air due to being a new concept. Small, agile, easy to park and with a grin-engaging turn of speed, cars like the Golf GTi and Toyota Starlet delivered economical thrills. They also delivered economical horsepower. Looking back from the present day, when three hundred horses is seen as the benchmark for a sporty machine, the hundred or so ponies packed under the hoods of those early hatchbacks looks positively wimpy. On paper, at least. Take a spin, and you’ll still find yourself smiling ear to ear. Why? Power to weight ratio. That is why the news of a Can-Am Commander side-by-side off-roader with a 100hp Rotax engine is on a par with advice that chocolate now helps you lose weight. When it comes to having fun, a small, light and nimble machine with 100 horses to unleash is going to do the business like very little else. Now, to be certain, Can-Am has also developed the 2021 Commander for serious stuff. It’s factory-fresh with the biggest cargo bed in its class, and the ability to tow 900kg comes as standard. Can-Am engineers have made this version of the Commander safer, more sturdy, more rigid, and more featurepacked than any before. Most of all, though, you can imagine the lab-coated and flat-capped folks with their rulers and pencils waiting to finish designing the new Commander so they can have a turn out in the mud. Antidive geometry and arched suspension

2021 Can-Am Commander promises lightweight, agile handling and more power than your dad’s hatchback — what’s not to love?

arms front and back combine with a tiny turning circle and some serious long-travel shocks to deliver telepathic handling and the ability to obliterate rough terrain. While the Commander is certainly competent and well equipped for rural chores, it’s apparent from its sheer aggressive look and stance that it’s waiting to let loose and have some fun as well. A tubular frame, a peppy engine with more punch than those good-times

• Good supply of hay, balage & straw — round, square & conventional — all year round • Competitive cartage options available • Direct drilling plus full cultivations

‘80s hatchbacks, and a whole lot of practicality as well? The question isn’t whether Can-Am has a handle on how to make off-roaders. It’s when they are going to combine the on-road abilities of the Spyder and the lightweight joy of the Commander to make a street-legal car that would surely rival the Ariel Atom.
