Sharon loves the character and quirks of these green ducks

“I first saw them at my best friend’s parents’ place when I was 15. They were in a line marching across the paddock, hunting grass grubs and Porina moths, and are good for pest control. I’ve been searching for them since I was a kid,” Sharon says. Eighteen years ago, Sharon moved to Hawke’s Bay from the South Island for employment. After finding a breeder in Auckland, 10 years ago, Sharon bought her first birds. “I breed them because they are a rare breed and excellent for large patrols. They are great night hunters with a nice friendly nature. “I think they are the most hilarious characters. I had a couple I handreared. I’d be out in the garden, and if you didn’t give them a bug or a worm you dug out, they would bite you until you gave them something. They do come with personalities.” Sharon says that Cayuga ducks appeal to people from all walks of life because of their endearing personalities.

“They’re one of the only creatures I’ve seen Aucklanders stop for on the motorway. I don’t know if they have godlike features, they don’t stop for much on the motorway in Auckland, but they did for a mother duck and her babies.” Sharon hopes to see more people take an interest in rare breeds to help conserve those that may become extinct. “My belief is if every lifestyle block had one rare breed, we would keep them all going. It doesn’t matter what you like. You could help keep a rare breed going and have something unique to show your friends. “I have Saddleback pigs, Suffolk sheep, nurse cows that have recently reared feeder calves, all sorts of chooks, the dog, the cat and the budgie. It’s a zoo. “It keeps you busy. When you work full-time, having the zoo, it’s a busy life. My regular job is as a PrimaryITO training adviser. “You have to follow your passion. Mine is the farm and the animals. If you’re outside in nature, you are less likely to worry about wars and Covid.”

A cause to climb for

Grandmaster Kevin Hodges has competed in the Firefighter Sky Tower Challenge for seven years, supporting Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand. “Seven kids and seven adults in New Zealand are diagnosed with leukaemia or blood cancer each day. With all that is going on, we all have to care for each other,” says Kevin. Kevin has friends and family who have been affected by leukaemia. He finds it encouraging to see the impact that LBC has in helping his community. “I lost a grandparent and friends through leukaemia. I’ve got an uncle in Auckland who has been just diagnosed with leukaemia, and that drives me to do it more. “I’ve run into so many people that have received so much help through LBC — seeing what the money does makes me want to do it more. “I’m starting to make stainless steel trophies for LBC. They had plastic ones made, but they kept on breaking.” This year Kevin has exceeded his goal of raising $9,000 for the challenge and won second place for individual fundraising last year. “I enjoy fundraising because I get to meet people and talk. You meet all sorts when you get amongst the community. This year I’m sitting on around $14,000 that I’ve raised. “I get right behind LBC because the government does not fund them. All the money they get is through fundraising.”

“Seeing what the money does makes me want to do it more.” Kevin is in the 50 to 60-year-old age range, called grandmasters. He takes part in the Firefighter of Steel category, climbing 60 floors, and has completed it in around 21 minutes — the fourth-fastest time last year. “I’ve passed a few young ones and told them ‘come on mate, follow me.’ There is good teamship too with the different stations around New Zealand. We all help each other out.” Kevin is an internationally-classed firefighter, having spent six weeks in Canada fighting wildfires four years ago. He was part of the team that went to Christchurch following the 2011 earthquakes. “I’m at Hastings Station under Heretaunga, the rural brigade. If the readers would like to donate, they can go to Firefighter Sky Tower Challenge 2022 and type my name in Find a Firefighter — Kevin Hodges.”

FAMILY AND

COMMUNITY VINES BY AMY FIFITA Bob and Carolyn Armstrong established Hawke’s Ridge Wine Estate in 2003 with their son Douglas in Maraekakaho — the vineyard and olive grove have since flourished.

“I

t started in the mid-90s when we transferred to Singapore and then to Paris and London. We were townies. I was in technology and had nothing to do with farming,” co-founder Bob Armstrong said. “In 2003, Carolyn decided she wanted to live in the country and that I should retire from my business. I said go for it.” Carolyn went ahead to set up in New Zealand while Bob finished his business in London. She and their son, Douglas, started to organise relocating to Hawke’s Bay. “He said if we were serious then he would come down with Carolyn. She wanted to live in Hawke’s Bay. “The olive groves were planted first, and there is an old riverbank in between. We were on two levels, with the grapes on the highest level.”

When Bob returned in 2006, Carolyn had built two houses on their Hawke’s Bay property. With the groves in place, their first wine vintage was in 2007/2008 and as the vines matured, the quality got better. “That’s how it started — it was a total change in the order of things. We had been in the city all our lives, and Carolyn’s mother, not being too well and getting older, wanted to be with her, so she came home. “We think we might be the highest vineyard in Hawke’s Bay, and we’re a long way from the sea, so we are different to the big wineries nearer the sea on the flat. Douglas set out to educate himself on the new venture by studying silviculture and viticulture, receiving a Bachelor of Wine Science. He is now the winemaker

Hawke’s Ridge has an eclectic range of wine on sale online and at the boutique cellar

and viticulturist — the wines are sold at the cellar door. “Before he completed his bachelor’s degree, his assignment was to design and create his winery, and that is what he did. “Coming to the country and thinking that you have a nice view from your

bedroom window is not the issue. You have to find out what the climate does and that comes with generational knowledge. “We have been supported by our neighbours locally and from our friends who are in different parts of New Zealand but some agricultural pursuits as well.”

Bob and Carolyn Armstrong started their vineyard and olive grove in 2003, wanting to move from city life to the country

Covid and the lockdowns boded well for the business, with revenues increasing 58 per cent. It was declared an essential business and Bob and his team catered food and wine to the local community. “We were inundated by our friends and neighbours, and the farmers would have boundary parties. There was always a fence dividing the two rural properties, and they would put a tent up on each side.

“We would bring the ute up to drop off a pile of pizzas and a few dozen bottles of wine, and off we went. “All we left them with was a little piece of paper with our bank account number and how much they owed us, and everybody paid. It shows how the community can come together to fight it. It was great.” Many of their workers are from the surrounding area, and Bob sees the

Bob and Carolyn’s son Douglas plays a massive part in the business as a winemaker and viticulturist

estate as a fertile training ground for the next generation. “I think we have respect for our community, and they have respect for us; they know it’s our home. People come to sit and be convivial.” It has been an exciting experience for the family, and Bob gives some credit to the professional people who have helped their endeavour. As Bob and Carolyn move toward board meetings, Douglas will take charge of the operation.

“When we closed the tasting room on Mother’s Day, Carolyn and I said to Douglas, ‘you’re it now.’ I’m 79, and Carolyn is 78 now. We are passing the whole shebang over to Douglas. “He will be the new conductor of the orchestra. Some of our grandchildren are already involved in the business. We have had enjoyment being able to work as a family and with our neighbours — it’s all been a wonderful journey.”

GROWING

CONFIDENT SE ED

LINGS

BY AMY FIFITA

“A

t the time, I was president of the Hawke’s Bay Fruitgrowers Association, and everyone was saying there were no young people in the industry,” Leon says. “I went along to the Young Farmer of the Year competition and thought if they can do that, then why can’t we? That formed the idea. We winged it and whatever happened was the plan. “I got eight people in the trade that I knew and said I want to do a young people of the year competition to give them the opportunity and promote the industry. They all sat back with their arms folded. I said I’m not going to ask for any money. They all sat forward as a group and said: ‘OK, tell us what you want to do’.

The Young Grower of the Year was pioneered by Leon Stallard, who created a local Hawke’s Bay horticulture competition that evolved into a national competition.

“I said you’re the experts in your field; why don’t you each run a station for half an hour. This is the format that works, and it is the same format that is used 15 years later throughout the country.” The idea was passed on a year later to the Waikato through a Primary Industry Organisation contributor with the intention that the regions could compete. Next, it was established in Nelson, and it grew from there. “We had a provincial parochialism by saying ours is better than yours. It grew from there. The idea from the outset was to get the industry to own it. We took everybody with us on this journey that is still happening, and that’s cool. “I am proud. I was on the Horticulture New Zealand board, and I stood down,

Last year competitors pulled their weight at the tug of war

and my wife and I donated a trophy for the national winner. “What is good now is that the large corporations are running their competitions to select a competitor in the regional competition.”

The skill sets involved in horticulture are a range of subjects, including social aspects such as creating connections in the industry. The competitions are a way to promote what is involved.

Competitors from regions across New Zealand will embark on challenges to find out who is the 2022 Young Grower of the Year

“The whole idea was to build networks and give the young people confidence. What everybody learned was how diverse the skill level we need to have to operate in this business. You need to understand budgets, soil, foreign exchange, pests and diseases. To survive, you have to be very skilled at 100 things. “Part of the competition was a public speech, which can be incredibly daunting. This industry is like a pride of lions, and they are the cubs, so when you stand up and speak in front of everyone, no one is there to criticise

you. We are there to defend and support you.” Leon has seen the benefit the competition has brought for the local horticultural industry, particularly former young growers who have developed to become prominent figures in associations. “It’s great to see it going nationally and competing with the other sectors as a result of that. It is good for the industry and the under 30-year-olds that compete. Most of them now are managers of organisations or orchards. They were young growers back in 2008 with pride.

“Everybody benefitted from it, particularly the young ones. It gave them a career opportunity and allowed them to lift their head above the parapet and realise that they were special and different. “It builds pride, and it was a good vehicle to promote the industry. As a consequence of the competition, we established the Horticultural Field Days. Unfortunately, we have not been able to have it in the past few years because of Covid. “It’s been a good journey. The first competition we ran was a bleak miserable day in June, and we winged it all the way

through. We had 80 people who came to the dinner in the evening and that was at a cafe. Now there are 250 people at the event with collars and ties — it is an event.”

“We have, what we believe to be, the largest stump grinder in New Zealand. We like to focus on commercial stump grinding — for rural, orchards and lifestyle blocks,” says co-owner Sarah Curd. “We can get rid of large and mini stumps with an incomparably high amount of efficiency. “My husband and I work as a team. He is on the go constantly and will go and price things straight away. We have our transport, which means we can get our machines to the jobs when they need to be.” Other options cost more time and money, whereas stump grinding machines will mulch wood cleanly and efficiently. The company has two machines to suit different customer needs. “We have a 22-tonne track machine and an 11-tonne machine on wheels that is more suitable for places that need more care for the turf like golf courses. The tracks on the big machine would rip it up. “For your options on getting rid of stumps, we are the most economically viable choice. Our machine goes to the stump and grinds it down to half a metre deep to be suitable for cropping and planting.

“We have a 22-tonne track machine and an 11-tonne machine on wheels that is more suitable for places that need more care for the turf like golf courses.” “You’ll have some wonderful wood chips, which are great for mulching things around the gardens and can break down into the soil over time. “Visit our Facebook page, Stump Grinding Hawke’s Bay, to view our videos.” Call 0800 STUMPS or visit their Facebook page — facebook.com/ stumpgrindinghb.

Bringing a whole new level of sophisticated, innovative solutions and grower-centric support in the cropping fight against winter fronts is the proud service delivered by New Zealand Frost Fans in Omahu Road, Hastings. They’ve been manufacturing and installing frost fans since 1999. The company has a significant research and development programme focussed on improving the efficiency and reliability of the FrostBoss® frost fans range and the FrostSmart™ monitoring web app. Frost Fans work by drawing down warmer air from the inversion layer and using it to warm up the air surrounding the crop on nights and early mornings when the temperatures are low enough to cause crop damage. When setting out to design the FrostBoss® composite fan blade, they had three goals: low noise, excellent coverage and fuel efficiency. The C49 four-blade frost fan is the more popular option and the best-selling frost fan in Australasia. Whereas the C59 five-blade model is quieter and the preferred option when installations are near residential areas. Frost fans can also protect a variety of crops — including wine grapes, apples, almonds, citrus, stone fruit, kiwifruit and more. FrostSmart™ monitoring is a must if you don’t live on-site or you’re running multiple units. Alarms can be generated in the form of text messages and Frost

ADVERTORIAL

Is it really a price freeze? by Jane Gray

The immune system (Part two)

by John Arts

Supermarkets are ‘freezing’ prices apparently to help struggling Kiwi families. True relief or public relations spin? Progressive Enterprises announced a ‘freeze’ on the prices of more than 500 items. While they branded these as essentials, the list included cotton buds, potato chips, many varieties of herbs and spices, lollies and wine. I don’t know about you but what would help me would be the staples, like meat, fruit, vegetables, bread and dairy products. Surprise, surprise, rivals Foodstuffs hit back with a rollback of prices to 2021 levels on a shorter list of items, but making deeper cost cuts. Once again, the list was light on fresh meat, fish and vegetables. The cost of living is so high, and reading that companies like this (which are the only major places we can get groceries) made a $430 million annual excess profit

is vexing. To make that sort of profit, they pay their frontline staff and suppliers amounts which, in my opinion, are very low when weighed against executive salaries and dividends to shareholders. Progressive is Australian-owned, so those profits don’t even stay in New Zealand. When buying groceries in Australia, you are not paying GST on fresh fruit and vegetables. In fact, most fresh products that are Australian produced don’t attract GST. So the government over there got something right. If you were to ask any farmer across the country what they are paid at the gate, it bears no relevance to what is charged at the till. More competition would be ideal — the duopoly needs to go. A

Initially, it does not recognise the attacker and needs to be ‘trained’ to identify and attack the virus. Antibodies are proteins made by the immune B cells that bind to an invader marking it for destruction by T cells. Natural immunity is based on the immune system’s ability (activated B cells) to produce antibodies that will both fight a current infection and a return of the same pathogen. Artificial immunity is from vaccines that trigger B cells to make antibodies to provoke a rapid T cell response against a first infection against a virus. It means your immune system is already primed, waiting for exposure and can launch a much faster, more aggressive response against the virus. In the last edition, we saw that our Non-Specific immunity is greatly

influenced by nutrients. The same is true for our Specific immunity. Vitamin D acts like a master commander of your immune defences. Dr Anthony Fauci, who leads the US health Covid response recommends supplementing with 4,000IU of vitamin D daily to help immune responses. It is also important to make sure you have optimal levels of antioxidants, vitamins and trace minerals, especially selenium and zinc. These help prevent damage from both the infection and the immune responses. Many of these are antioxidants that protect the immune system and help prevent unwanted inflammation. Minerals such as selenium and zinc are very important. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. CASTING FORTH KNOWLEDGE THE BY AMY FIFITA Joseph Utiera was hooked the first time his father took him on a fishing outing; now, he passes his knowledge on to people keen to learn how to fly fish for free.

“I

was born and raised as a saltwater fisherman. My dad was a fisherman on a boat, and as far back as I can remember, he would take me down to the port in Napier. We would fish off the wharf, and that’s how I fell in love with the whole sport,” says Joseph. “He passed away when I was about five or six, and I’ve loved anything to do with fishing ever since.” With strong ties to fishing, Joseph loves the sport and three years ago decided to try his hand at fly fishing.

“With saltwater fishing, you sit there, cast your rod out and hope for the best and with fly fishing is walking, tracking, locating and casting. “Around Hawke’s Bay, it was hard for me to catch anything. I used to take my kids down to the park and always see trout in the river and decided I would catch one of them one day.” He bought fly fishing gear and, with a desire to learn a new way of fishing, asked around for someone to guide him in the early days. What he found were expensive guides, so Joseph taught

himself using online resources, and now he runs the Tūtaekurī Fly Fishing page on Facebook. “I found it hard to find people who would teach me how it was done. I did the groundwork, and then I hit the river and started catching fish.

“I love the whole thing, the close action, walking down the river, finding the fish, trying to cast up to the fish and landing them. “If I can do it and pass my knowledge to someone else, then they can provide for their whānau with food and have a good time with them.

Joseph’s eldest son, Tobias Cribb, shares the passion for fishing that has been passed down through the generations

“I started the page to make it cheaper and easier for other people to do it. The main reason I made it was to get others involved and show them the way. “Don’t be shy; you won’t know until you give it a go, and I’m easy to talk to. We’ll make a day of it and it only costs your time and my time. “I’ve been doing fly fishing for three years. It’s been a journey, and I’m trying to get people who want to get into it.” It was not always an easy life for him. Joseph separated himself from a way of life that was not for his benefit, and he has actively sought to live a better life than the challenging environment he was raised in. Fly fishing has been a positive way for him to channel his energy into something useful.

“I was brought up hard and grew up with all the gang life, and I never wanted that. That was never me. I didn’t want to be a gangster, and when I had kids, I didn’t want them around that sort of thing. “I went to jail for a bit, and I thought — ‘this needs to stop.’ I needed something to take me away from the criminal side of life and be more proactive as a family member. “People think that is life, but there are positive things out there that will help you move forward if you go and grab it. “There is more out there than what is in front of you. People can guide you, but you’ve got to do it yourself. Find something you enjoy and put 100 per cent into a new way of life.”

Joseph’s largest fish to date was a 3.63 kilogram brown trout that he says was an exciting catch

Hook yourself to efficiency

by Amy Fifita

Selfe Hooks is a new, reusable tie-down product introduced to New Zealand that can make apple and stone fruit orchardists’ jobs more efficient and cost-effective. “A family member of mine works on a farm and he had been doing the training and pruning for the apple trees. He thought there was a faster way of doing things. So, he and his friend decided to come up with something that would be easier and faster for the workers,” says director Georgia Nunes. “I think it would be a great tool here because we haven’t got anything like it. We have a labour shortage with workers not being able to come from overseas. “It is a small reusable, recycled plastic hook and is faster than what they are currently doing — tying individually and untying at the end.” This alternative product provides a cost-effective solution to replenishing your tie-down stocks — increasing farm efficiency. “It can be adjusted as you go along. It can go on the branches now by it can be popped off and readjusted,” says Georgia.

“It is a small reusable, recycled plastic hook.” “The product is used mainly on apples and stone fruit. People have used them in the garden or on big farms — it is taking off overseas. “Farmers in South Africa have seen the benefit. They are still using them even though they have more available labour; it is more user-friendly than tying each branch.” Georgia wants to see Selfe Hooks take off in New Zealand — she sees this innovation as a benefi t to the agricultural industry. For more information, visit selfehooks.co.nz or fi nd Selfe Hooks NZ on Facebook and Instagram.
