Hawke’s Bay Regional Council’s water quality monitoring staff check water quality at 36 popular swimming spots around the region and are seeing higher levels of algal growth in waterways. Parts of the Tukituki River are prone to algal growth in summer because of lower water flows, higher water temperatures and nutrients in the water. Green strand algae is commonly seen as the water warms but is harmless, however, the black Phormidium bacteria growth on rocks is of more concern as it can turn toxic and hazardous for humans and dogs. It can detach from the rocks and dry as mats on the sides of the rivers. “Always treat the black growth on rocks in the water and the drying mats as toxic, stay out of the water if you see it, and swim or walk your dog elsewhere,” says HBRC’s principal scientist marine and coasts, Anna Madarasz-Smith. “At lakes keep away if the water is bright blue-green, especially if it looks like an oily, spilt paint spill on the surface. Water activities in Lakes Tutira and Waikopiro is advised against because of regular blooms.” Science has not yet identified when Phormidium turns toxic or why, so to be safe it should always be treated as harmful as contact with Phormidium bacteria can make people sick, with flu-

like symptoms. “Dogs are attracted to the musty odour of the mats, and their smaller bodies mean the toxins can be more dangerous. “Dogs should be under control in river beds and not allowed to scavenge, and owners should take other water for their dogs to drink.” Dogs should be taken immediately to the vet if they present vomiting, diarrhoea and lethargy, or heat stroke-like symptoms such as muscle tremors, breathing difficulties, paralysis and convulsions. Algae and Phormidium occur naturally, even in very clean fresh water. As regional council staff cannot check whole river systems weekly, they appreciate information and photos from the public. It is important to pay attention to warning signs that are put up at affected areas and best to go elsewhere to avoid contact with the Phormidium mats. People can check water quality and algae warnings on the national environmental monitoring site Land Air Water Aotearoa at lawa.org.nz search for Can I Swim Here. Information on locations can be phoned into 0800 108 838 or emailed with photos to info@hbrc.govt.nz — subject Algae alert.

Fonterra election date The Fonterra Shareholders’ Council has set the date for a second election for the remaining vacancy on Fonterra’s Board of Directors. Only two candidates from the first election, Leonie Guiney and Peter McBride, obtained more than 50 per cent support from voting shareholders. The rules of the first election state that if not enough candidates obtain more than 50 per cent support, there must be a second election. Voting will open on December 3 and close at 1pm on December 20, and the results will be announced later the same day. “This is the first time a second director election has been required,” said council chairman, Duncan Coull. “After careful consideration, the Shareholders’ Council has determined that the second election will be a vote between the unsuccessful candidates nominated in the first election who wish to re-stand.” The election will be between selfnominated candidate John Nicholls and Jamie Tuuta, who was nominated by the board, having been recommended by the Independent Selection Panel. As with the first election, to be successful, a candidate must obtain more than 50 per cent support from shareholders who vote. If both candidates get more than 50 per cent support, then the candidate with the highest level of support will be elected. If no candidate gets more than 50 per cent support, there will not be a third election and the board may

S

arah has loved horses her entire life. At the age of 10, she received her first horse as a Christmas gift. Her grandfather, a former top jumps jockey, gave her a lot of support and encouragement. “My grandad sent me to help out at a stable for Stuart Manning, who was a good friend of his,” she said. “So I learnt to ride track work on the beach, groomed horses at the races, and all the rest of the hard work that went with it.” Work for Central Districts racehorse trainer, Kevin Gray, and at Lisa Latta’s racing stables in Christchurch followed. When Sarah moved back to the Waikato, she took on employment at a breaking-in and pretraining

establishment in Matamata. She also worked on a stud farm, preparing yearlings for the sales. Sarah continues preparing yearlings for sales, as well as running her own small stud farm, Willow Creek Farm. The stud farm was established two years ago in Morrinsville, but recently relocated to the Bay of Plenty. Joy’s long and varied involvement with horses dates back to 1960. Not only did this include pleasure riding, showing horses and racing, but Joy also founded and established the national registered horse welfare charity, Horsewatch NZ (HWNZ). When Joy’s health deteriorated, due to a previous blood disease progressing to a rare form of blood cancer, she was forced to close HWNZ.

Sarah Thompson and Joy O’Connor have always loved horses and both women have personal links to cancer. Combining their equine expertise and resources, the pair are embarking on a project breeding horses with sale proceeds to be donated to child cancer charity, Gabby’s Starlit Hope.

“I still had the desire to continue contributing in a constructive way to a good cause,” she said. As a search began for a suitable stallion to send her mare, Nonna Quattro, to be bred with, an idea to help a charity also developed. “Due to Joy’s own personal circumstances, she wanted to find someone who would be willing to take Nonna on when her condition worsened,” said Sarah. “I then came up with an idea to donate any proceeds from the sale of the resulting foal to charity. “So the hunt began to find something small and personal that could benefit from a donation.” The pair also wanted to be able to follow the charity closely and help young children immediately, rather than trying to help fund research. When Sarah came across child cancer charity, Gabby’s Starlit Hope, she sent through the Facebook link to Joy. “Joy immediately knew that this was the charity we wanted to help and see smiles light up on the faces of kids, who are in situations that make life harder than it should be.” Joy said with her own personal link with cancer, Gabby’s Starlit Hope seemed the perfect choice. Starlit Hope was created by the late Gabby Devine in February 2013. A diagnosis of Ewing’s Sarcoma (a rare type of bone cancer) in February 2012, meant Gabby had a year of intensive chemotherapy, radiation and major surgery to remove the remaining tumour. During this time, she spent

many months at Starship and Taranaki Base Hospitals. When Gabby completed her cancer treatment, she wanted to help oncology children in their cancer journey. She established Starlit Hope with the aim of doing random acts of kindness for oncology children, parents and occasionally oncology staff. A major part of this was providing oncology children in hospital with boredom boxes containing seven presents — one for the child to open each day for a week. Gabby passed away in 2015 at the age of 13. Joy’s mare, a six-year-old Thoroughbred, was initially being trained and prepared for life as a show hack. Unfortunately due to a serious accident, Nonna is no longer able to be ridden. “She has also had her share of setbacks, but is now 100% and ready to embark on her new endeavours,” said Joy. “The decision to join with Sarah Thompson of Willow Creek Farm, and her lovely palomino stallion, He’s All In A Twist, provides Nonna with an alternative productive purpose in life.” Joy said Nonna will now help contribute to the young cancer-affected children of New Zealand, as they undergo invasive treatment in hospital. The rising fouryear-old palomino paint Quarter Horse/ Stationbred cross stallion, He’s All In A Twist, stands at 15hh and was bred for his quality and trainable temperament. “Due to these passed-down traits from his sire and dam, coupled with his wonderful personality, I decided to stand him for stud duties,” said Sarah.

BIODIVERSITY

The late Gabby Devine created Gabby’s Starlit Hope with random acts of kindness for oncology children, parents and occasionally oncology staff

“So far this is paying off, with his progeny possessing the exact same traits.” Sarah and Joy aim for a special annual breeding between these two horses with 100% of the proceeds from the sale of each foal donated to Gabby’s Starlit Hope. The pair are yet to decide whether this will be via tender or a set price. Nonna Quattro has had two previous beautiful foals and we expect the pairing with He’s All In A Twist will produce equally as stunning foals,” said Sarah. “We hope the public will follow both the resulting progeny and the charity as it is such a deserving cause.” The horses’ progress can be followed at facebook.com/willow.creek.horse. transport/ and facebook.com/NonnasLegacy-1721742487882478/

Neil was born into dairy farming and farms three kilometres from where he was raised, and Eileen grew up three kilometres further down the road. “We have a lot of grass and run a low input system. We make silage from our surplus grass and supplement with palm kernel or maize silage if necessary,” says Neil. Along with many other farmers across the country the couple’s toughest time in farming was 1984 when interest rates rose to 26 per cent. “Many faced serious financial hardship but managed to get through it. for confidential support and advice in hard times, so we formed the Rural Support Trust. We have a team that operates the 0800 number, and it is totally confidential and independent of any other organisation. “Peter Buckley was the president, John Fisher treasurer, myself and Mandy Mcleod was a farm adviser — she worked in Australia with suicide prevention in the drought-stricken areas.” Neil often finds himself at a dining table or on-farm sharing his own experiences. “We advocate and support individuals or families during stressful times. It may be relationship issues, finances or something else — we don’t give advice but listen and provide contacts for individual situations. We walk alongside people as they go through their problems — their welfare is our total focus and primary concern.” He says the future of farming is positive and will continue to change as it always has since he was a child. “Back then the farmer did it all on a 50 acre farm with 40 cows, and it was a good living for someone who worked hard. Now it is about systems and is on a different level with technology becoming incredible. “I have tried different ideas, and we were one of the early adopters of tail painting for mating. We would get the retailers’ cast-off lines until someone created a paint specific for the purpose. That started through a discussion group as well and has proven positive. Farmers, whether sheep, beef, dairy or

Neil says there are many different ways to farm and this gives the opportunity to try new ideas using science and technology to improve

deer are not slow to take up new ideas and technologies. “Fourteen years ago we chose once a day milking, which was frowned on, but it is recognised now. I believe it has real benefits and reduces a lot of stress on the farmer and the animals and is a very sustainable system. “There will always be pressures and stresses, but the industry absolutely has a positive future. We are producing food and are doing well environmentally compared to overseas. We are seeing improvements come through with water quality and the like. He says there are many different ways you can farm and it gives the opportunity to work and make decisions and try new

ideas using science and technology to improve. “The tough times do get better, and there will be tough times — some years we get droughts or too much grass growth, and there are different decisions to make, and we get to use our knowledge and initiative. “Here in New Zealand, the stigma of asking for help has eased. I think this is thanks to people like John Kirwan, Doug Avery and Sam Whitelock. They have all helped us to ask for help. It used to be women calling concerned for their partners — now the men are calling us direct, which is awesome. “It may be something totally unrelated to farming that becomes too much.

STUMPCHIPPING & MULCHING

Sometimes it is easy, sometimes it is difficult, and sometimes you just need a break away for a week to refresh. “All of our people are rural people, and they talk the same language and don’t wear suits and ties. We are not charging or trying to sell them anything — we are here as mentors and supporters. We sit down over a ‘cuppa’ tea, have a chat and find a pathway forward. “Rural support keeps us at the trust busy, and even we need to go to the beach more often. Eileen was involved on the farm but has her own interests now and supports me. We come home and share ideas at the end of our day.” To contact the Rural Support Trust call 0800 787 254.

SPECIALISING IN ADVANCING PROGENY Percy and Linda Sharp relocated from Zimbabwe to New Zealand in 2003 due to the political turmoil of their homeland and have created a new life helping improve cattle genetics both here and internationally.

P

ercy trained in South Africa as a veterinarian and was forced to leave the farm that was in his family for 100 years. “Our application to move to New Zealand was accepted, and now our whole family are here. I call them our most successful reproduction story,” says Percy. “Shortly after I left vet school the family property became an option for me, so I started dairy farming and a veterinarian practice. My colleague specialised in embryo transfer work and trained me so I could work on my own cows and the interest developed.” ET helps get progeny from exceptional females — whereas ar tificial insemination is getting progeny from superior males.

“We collect the embryos directly from quality cows and implant them into recipient cows so they can produce excellent calves. The older way is injecting cows with fertility drugs to release eggs and a week later collect the embryos.” Another system is in vitro fertilisation where unfertilised eggs are collected and fertilised with semen in the laboratory and are inserted into a surrogate cow or frozen to be used in the future. “Previously you could only work on a non-pregnant animal. Now we collect eggs directly from ovaries and don’t have to go into the uterus, and if she is early in calf the ovary is still accessible,” says Percy. “The main drawback is we can’t make an embryo

in a laboratory as robust as a cow can, so the success rates are not as high no matter how hard we try, but we can now collect eggs every four days instead of six-weekly for recovery time. There is a lot of specialised work involved and aim for 100 per cent success, but on an average, we usually get 50 per cent pregnancy rates. “Another important use of ET is moving genetics internationally with ease. The embryo is put through a washing process and rendered diseasefree and is microscopic meaning less cost than relocating a live animal.” Linda is responsible for the microscope and laboratory work. “We at Embryo Transfer Services Ltd are one of the two companies in New Zealand that offer the IVF and Moet procedures operating throughout the North Island. “Our biggest success was with a breed of cattle from Kenya that farmers wanted to establish in Zimbabwe. Due to foot and mouth disease, we couldn’t relocate animals, so we collected 500 embryos and produced 250 calves establishing the breed in Zimbabwe.” Embryos of another indigenous breed were transferred from Zimbabwe to establish the stock in America. “We still visit Zimbabwe, and our project at present is to establish KiwiCross cattle there. The dairy farming industry has been decimated by the political problems, but we keep hoping things will get better and believe New Zealand’s Friesian/Jersey cattle are ideal for the conditions. We love it here and are settled. Most of the work

we do is for people with registered pedigree cattle that go to agricultural shows wanting to get a few more calves out of their prize animals. We also help commercial farmers improve their herds.” The desired result of ET is to produce more calves from a superior mother. “As an example, I worked on a young cow in America, and before she produced her own calf physically, she created 100 calves because we were able to use her eggs. “The most difficult part is finding the right fertile cow that is on the same cycle to transfer the offspring into. It is frustrating when it doesn’t work,

especially when there is no logical reason to explain why, but the success stories are fantastic. It is a numbers game, so you are better to work on 10 cows for a higher positive result than one cow and fail.” Percy and Linda own a 12 acre block and four years ago decided to breed Wagyu cattle with imported embryos from Australia and now have nine Wagyu from those embryos. “It is a way to help cash flow, and if you have a small block, you can do this comfortably by planning right. We also holistically manage, which is beyond organic — working with nature instead of against it. We now grow enough

grass with major financial savings, and the meat is much better quality without chemical residues from fertiliser, pest and herbicides, and that makes our ET work even more positive.”

Chondroitin: Forgotten hero If you use a joint supplement for osteoarthritis, then stop reading and get the bottle and check the amount of chondroitin sulphate (CS) in the daily dose. Most older-style formulas will have up to 20% CS in the formula typically about 200mg in a daily dose. Chondroitin is a structural component of cartilage adding strength and resistance to compression. The study that changed it all for me was published in the Annals of Rheumatic Diseases (Wildi et al, 2011) the study title is: Chondroitin sulphate reduces both cartilage volume loss and bone marrow lesions in knee osteoarthritis patients starting as early as six months after initiation of therapy: a randomised, doubleblind, placebo-controlled pilot study using MRI. Eighty people with similar grades of knee OA were chosen. Half the participants were given 800mg of CS as 400mg twice daily for six months. The other group was given a placebo. The two groups were then compared after six months. The group using CS had much less cartilage loss. The next phase then gave all the participants 800mg of CS for another six months. The same results occurred. Those that had been on the placebo showed a reduction in cartilage loss

while the group that had continued with CS now for 12 months continued with much less cartilage loss. As a consequence, I reformulated my joint support formula and lifted CS to the levels used in the study. I also added a potent anti-inflammatory 95% curcumin (from turmeric) extract. Even joints that show signs of degeneration can improve. As an example one man I have been helping noticed significant improvements in mobility and comfort after only a few months and is now even able to ski again. Give me a call or email john@abundant.co.nz if you need more information. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. The mystery of irrigation systems Many farmers and lifestylers make life hard for themselves by not understanding the requirements of an effective irrigation system, be it water or effluent.

Following are some points to consider: 1. Decide how far this system may finally go. So often this is understated which makes adding on later difficult if the pipe is already too restrictive. It is generally better to have over-large pipes than to be too small. You will save in pump energy anyway. 2. Pressure loss is linear by distance. The further you go the more pressure you lose in a proportional sense, ie 500m of pipe has twice pressure loss of 250m of the same pipe at same flow. 3. Understand the hose/pipe size being offered by the salesman. MDOD means Medium Density 0utside Dimension. Actual internal size will be at least 10mm–15mm smaller. Pressure loss is significantly greater. 4. Assuming flow is undiminished and correct size is selected, maintain pipe size to far end of the system. Some clot keeps repeating a myth in the market that you need to reduce pipe size the further you get from the pump. Try this with a milkshake sometime!

Make the straw longer and smaller — it doesn’t work! 5. The height of undulations, hills, etc, has a direct pressure loss on the liquid but fortunately is easy to calculate as follows: vertical height in meters of the object is equal (close enough) to the pressure loss of liquid in metres. So a hill 30m high vertically will have roughly 30mH pressure loss which needs to be allowed for in the equation. 6. Having arrived at the furthest irrigated paddock, don’t strangle the machine by having too small a supply hose. 7. Know what pressure is required to run the irrigator. Don’t just let it have whatever is left. 8. So, now knowing what total pressure is required for the system (and flow) you can select the correct pump for the job. Do this right. A bargain is not that if it costs more to run through being too large or too small. Irri-Max Ltd has a free basic consultation for your irrigation system call 0800 426 296.

Get the right ATV Honda’s all-terrain vehicles make farm life easy. No matter the job and its level of difficulty, Honda has the right hardworking ATV for you. Explore our range starting with the TRX250TM, the little quad that does it all, up to the on-farm powerhouse — the TRX680FA. Our range in between the 250 and 680 includes a selection of 420cc and 500cc options from manual or automatic, power-steering or non-power steering and independent rear suspension or single shock suspension. Whatever your needs we are sure to have a model that will be perfect for you. One of our most popular models is the TRX420FM2 (F = 4WD, M = manual, 2 = power-steering). It comes with all the great design features of the FM1, plus power-steering. The frame is 20 per cent stiffer than the previous generation bike, meaning your ATV can really handle the tough stuff. With a fuel-injected 420cc, OHV liquid-cooled engine and a strong 5-speed manual transmission this ATV goes where you need to go. The electronic power steering system is next generation providing reduced low-speed steering effort for enhanced manoeuvrability and increased kickback resistance meaning you can cover the roughest terrain with the least of effort. The Programmed Fuel Injection system

improves power delivery and throttle response. Front and rear suspension feature generous travel for a plush and controlled ride. Splash-proof bodywork provides easy access to service points, and Honda ATVs look like they mean business, which of course they do! For more than 45 years, Honda has been a fixture on farms around New Zealand, and Honda in Hastings has been there from the start. We take pride in providing hard-working and durable ATVs and farm bikes that help keep our local agriculture industry moving forward. Honda products have been designed for use in New Zealand conditions, so rest assured that no matter the task your Honda is up for it. They have also evolved over the years to support the developments and advancements in the agriculture sector. Saving your water supply Water is a precious resource and an important part of rural living, so saving it is a priority for farms, lifestyle block owners and residential dwellers alike, particularly over the hot summer season. Now is the time to check water tanks, troughs, taps and pipelines to ensure they are all in working order and not leaking or in need of replacement. For animals in your care, water is a vital part of life, and it is your legal responsibility provide them water,

whether you are on a farm, a small block or have a few sheep in your backyard. The Animal Welfare Act establishes a duty of care for animals, and you must meet their physical, health, and behavioural needs, and must alleviate pain or distress. The act defines ‘physical, health, and behavioural needs’ as proper and sufficient food and water. Simple changes to reduce water consumption include using hoses and watering cans to allow individual plants to be watered as a hose running at full volume uses 2,000 litres of water an hour. Only water in the cool of the early morning or evening; plants take up moisture through their feeder roots and low, slow watering is the best way to get it there. Moveable sprinklers are the least effective for saving water. If you soak your garden once every few days, this encourages

deeper roots to seek out moisture. For a healthy summer lawn leaving 25 to 30mm of the leaf provides shade to the roots and soil, slowing water loss and protecting your lawn from sunburn. Leave clippings as mulch, to help conserve soil moisture and put nutrients back into the soil. Around the house cut back on showers as each minute uses approximately 14 litres of water. Even a slow dripping tap can use 10 litres of water a day, and a leaking toilet can waste thousands of litres in a year. Grey water from baths, showers, sinks and washing machines can be used for watering the garden and contains nutrients that are beneficial

to the garden. Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth and use a plug in the sink when washing hands, dishes or vegetables and have a full load when you use the washing machine. Otherwise, use the half or lower level settings for smaller loads. A washing machine uses about 150 litres of water for one cycle. Catching rainwater in suitable containers can also be good for the garden and animals. Small changes help in big ways and always keep an eye on your water tanks regularly and if you need water delivered to your property book well in advance as the chances are if you need it, so does everyone else.

Eye for detail lives on Napier’s oldest jeweller has withstood an earthquake, moved from mechanical to battery watches and still survives in a world dominated by chain stores. The store was built to Leonard McClurgs’ specifications after the original shop was flattened in the 1931 earthquake. When Leonard took ill, his son Alan took over temporarily — the trained optometrist enjoyed the work so much he stayed on. His son and current owner David joined the family business straight from school. He began learning the trade, but his ‘impatience’ as a jeweller got the better of him. He moved on to manage the Taupo store before returning to Napier as the third generation to take over the business. A lot has changed in the 47 years David has been with the business — when he started; battery run watches were unheard if. The on-site watchmaker employed to fix watches was out of a job 20 years ago. It wasn’t economical to employ a watchmaker to change batteries. David’s strength has always been manufacturing jewellery, especially engagement rings. “We built our

reputation through high-quality handcrafted jewellery. You need some lines that are exclusive to yourself; otherwise, everyone’s the same.” That kept business going as more and more chain stores entered the market and mass-produced jewellery became more and more common. “We still had our loyal New Zealand customers, and we didn’t really feel it,” he said. ”I had a friend that got engaged three times; he was good for the business.” There is still a place for handcrafted jewellery, David said. “People don’t always want cheap jewellery made in China. I do think people want quality and they are prepared to pay for it.” They make to order and create the company’s own line. Sixty per cent of their diamond ring sales are made in the workshop at the Hastings Street store. Jeweller Nigel Taylor’s work is much more detailed today that it was when he started in the trade about

30 years ago. He began tidying up and assembling rings with already set diamonds. “It was like kitset jewellery.” Working at McClurgs, he sketches designs for customers, shapes the ring and places the diamonds by hand. On-site manufacturing cuts out the

‘middleman’ and keeps costs down for customers, David said. To complement their handmade rings, McClurgs stock a range of jewellery from Swarovski to Boh Runga along with French Ceramic Birds, Moorcroft and Waterford Crystals, watches and clocks.

Check for needle grass

Hawke’s Bay Regional Council reminds landowners to check the grasses on their properties to make sure the pest plant Chilean needle grass isn’t growing. The grass is easier for farmers to identify right now as the purple seed head is visible. “The distinctive purple seed head becomes visible in spring and early summer, making the plant easier to distinguish from other grasses. Early identification and control are important to contain this pest plant which can quickly invade productive land,” says HBRC senior plant pest adviser, Alice McNatty. Chilean needle grass has a sharp seed head that causes problems for stock, as it can pierce an animal’s eyes and skin. The seeds spread easily on contaminated machinery, vehicles, feed and stock. “The new biosecurity measures for M bovis may help, as people are required to clean boots and vehicles when moving between infected properties — the same measures should apply where there are pest plants present.” To prevent spread, landowners should only allow clean vehicles and machinery on to their property, and make sure any stock or feed brought onto the farm have not come from an infested property. Chilean needle grass grows well in dry, hard, hill country areas with light soil, heavily grazed pasture and bare ground where there’s less competition from desirable pasture plants. In Hawke’s

Chilean needle grass caught in sheep wool

Bay, Chilean needle grass is found on approximately 200 properties, covering around 600 hectares, in Maraekakaho, Bayview, Puketapu, Havelock North, Omakere, Poukawa, Porangahau, Waipawa and Waipukurau. “More Hawke’s Bay landowners are aware of Chilean needle grass as a pest plant now, and at the recent A&P show many of them came and saw our display

of the plant, which should help them to identify any plants on their land,” says Ms McNatty. “If anyone has concerns that the plant has got onto their land, we can follow up with a visit to their property and advise on control methods.” Landowners who find new plants can contact the pest plant team on 06 833 8083.

Credence for clear water revival AHD Ltd recently secured distribution of the global leading disinfectant Credence for controlling water quality and farm biosecurity. cleanout or one tablet for every 1,000 litres to meet drinking water standards (the amount will depend on water trough size). Credence tablets only need to be applied once every three months over spring and summer and once every six months over autumn and winter, under typical weather conditions. Stock will have a higher water uptake from water treated with Credence, and research has shown that the prevention of toxic algae and other contamination in drinking water results in a 20 to 30% increased growth rate in younger stock and higher milk production from dairy cows. Another advantage of Credence is that it is extremely safe for animals with no mineral overloading or imbalances, unlike copper-based products, which have been linked to causing brittle bones and fractures in cattle. For general disinfectant, Credence is well proven for all farm biosecurity requirements including M bovis protection and control. Credence can penetrate biofilms such as Citrobacter, Pseudomonas and M bovis and the difficult to control cryptosporidium although crypto can only be controlled during its reproductive stage when it lacks its protective outer layer. It is effective against viruses including rotavirus, parvovirus and avian influenza.

Credence has been tested and trialled in New Zealand including work done by Massey. Credence is MPI registered and

approved. For more information contact AHD Ltd 06 873 3611 or visit ahdltd. co.nz.

The importance of clean drinkable water is often overlooked. Water is the number one nutrient for all animals, and it is also is a major source of pathogenic organisms including protozoa, viruses and toxic blue-green algae. These pathogens are a major problem in New Zealand due to the mild winters and our warm climate. AHD Ltd managing director, Richard Kettle, says not to be forgotten are boreholes and roof water collection tanks, another major issue for contamination. A survey carried out in New Zealand on roof collection tanks found salmonella, coliforms, E coli, enterococci, Aeromonas, cryptosporidia, giardia, and legionella. Credence is presented as a slow release tablet of stable chloride ions with a unique mode of effective dispersal in water, by vigorous effervescence, which helps give better penetration into areas that harbour bacteria such as teats, bends, biofilm/slime layers or corners in pipes. Credence has a rapid kill rate with proven persistency over time (100% strength after 30 days) and is less corrosive in pipework compared to other disinfectants. The tablet application form makes it easy for farmers to treat water troughs by throwing in a Credence tablet, one tablet for every 200 litres for a thorough trough

Flipping the game by Andy Bryenton

When engineering innovator John Regier sat down to change the way people mow their lawns, he began with the idea of a combine harvester, rendered small. Rather than scaling up a push mower — and in those days we really do mean the old reel-bladed iron monster — he combined elements of farm machinery with the turf care devices deployed on American football fields. Of course, off the football field, you’ll find obstacles like bird baths, garden beds, pathways and shrubs. That means the ability to turn sharply and manoeuvre in tight spots was key to his mower’s success. And success was what awaited the first Hustler mower, spawning generations of big yellow machines for decades to come. Now those first principles have been further defined with the advent of the latest offering from Hustler Mowers — the Raptor Flip-Up. With zero-turn agility, this mower follows closely in the template laid down by John Regier all those years back. You can be impressed by the advancements made all round, from the fingertip sensitivity of the controls through to the power under the hood. That comes from a Kawasaki 23 horsepower overhead cam v-twin motor, air cooled and positioned low in the frame for stability. Of course, it’s the excellent torque from this unit which drivers the triple blades beneath the Hustler Raptor’s 54 inches wide cutting deck, armed with

guide wheels to help it float over the turf. Moreover, the real party piece of his mower is one that will save both time — and aches and pains! This Raptor, as its name suggests, flips up to allow access to the blades beneath. The entire front of the mower hinges up and away for both ease of maintenance and cleaning. No more ramps, no more lifts, no more trying to

get underneath the machine to ensure a good clean, or to lubricate and rustproof those blades. As an added bonus, the ‘flipped’ mode is much easier to store in a smaller space, like a folding bicycle or picnic table. For serious lawns, Hustler has been setting a high benchmark for years. Now they’ve flipped zero-turn design on its head!

Radiators at Crawford’s

DON’T TXT & DRIVE

Sue and Murray Gillies took over the ownership of Crawford’s Radiators in September after purchasing the business from Leigh Crawford as a career change opportunity. “After years of hard work, it was time for a lifestyle change for Leigh, and she has moved to Central Hawke’s Bay and is renovating an old villa and loving it,” says Sue. “Murray has been in the well drilling and engineering industry for some 48 years and it was time for a change of career, and this was a perfect choice.” Crawford’s Radiators offers all aspects of radiator repairs, service and replacements for all makes and models of vehicles including private, commercial, industrial and farming vehicles and machinery. “We cater for modern, vintage and classic vehicles, and in the short time we have owned the business have successfully completed work on everything from a 1915 Fabrique Nationale car, Morris Minors and early Chevys to helicopter and boat oil coolers, tractor, excavator and heavy haulage truck radiators. We are finding the variety intriguing. “Murray is also available to carry out work and advise on all aspects of gas welding, brazing, and soldering. With a wealth of knowledge he can save clients time and money with his experience and expertise.”
