CAREERS

November is the The Hawke's Bay Farming Lifestyles’ first birthday, as well our sales account manager, Teresa Steed’s one year anniversary working for Northsouth Multi Media

“It was the company that drew me to the job really, it’s philosophy of ‘it’s not about selling, it’s about making friends and relationships’. It’s about talking to people and getting to know them and their business,” said Teresa. “I have definitely become more confident over the year. Taking pride in the paper, has helped me with my confidence. People in the Hawke’s Bay are very easy to talk to.” “The most rewarding thing for me is the relationships I have built with businesses in Hawke’s Bay and the ongoing support they give me and the paper. “We are New Zealand owned and our company belief is about supporting the local community and individual businesses, so when you look at the paper it is all about people and businesses that service the Hawke’s Bay area. Teresa lives rurally herself. “I’ve been happily married for 21 years and I’ve

got three kids. We own a small lifestyle block with a few sheep on it, so not quite a farmer — but I do have a pair of red bands. A year later I still love my job and I am very passionate about the people and my publication the Hawke’s Bay Farming Lifestyles Leigh Crawford the owner of Crawford’s Radiator Centre and advertiser said “I’ve found Teresa wonderfully helpful with targeting the people who would be good customers for me,” “The service is great, she always offers me great advice and good tools to work with. I used to do radio advertising but I don’t anymore. I do yellow pages and I’ve stayed with you guys. “I’ve had comments from Gisborne, Wairoa and my farming friends — and it’s all very positive. I’ve had nothing but good stuff. Farmers sit down and take the time to read, so it really is a good place to advertise.”

Focussing on Business Ag Diploma

STANDING GRASS WANTED

Taratahi Agriculture Training Centre is broadening its programme base and offering the highly regarded Massey Diploma in Agriculture at its residential campuses in the Wairarapa, at Telford in South Otago, and the Central North Island Dairy Academy at Reporoa in 2018. The Taratahi vocational model is based on providing real learning on real farms. “Employers are looking for graduates who not only have a good grounding in farm practices but a solid understanding of the skills and knowledge of running a farm business,” says Chief executive Arthur Graves. “Offering this particular diploma through the Taratahi experience means the graduates are well-prepared to help meet the sector’s requirements for skilled managers.” New Zealand’s best farms are now complex businesses managing across a range of competencies from health and safety to environmental sustainability, and to daily pasture and stock management, while using a raft of technologies and programmes. “Students learn to understand how to run a farm business and what drives successful practice. We are confident that the content of this diploma programme develops high quality graduate skills,” says Mr Graves. “The Massey Diploma is an intensive 32 week course and is well suited to the residential environment of the Wairarapa and Telford campuses and the Dairy Academy which all offer attractive and supportive learning environment on actual farms.

“With the growth in the primary sector employment market, the chance of securing a job after completing the course is very high. In fact employers come looking for our graduates so many get to choose which job suits them best from a range of offers. “This is the sort of qualification that provides the opportunity to take up a career that offers a diverse range of

specialties and experiences. It can also offer a pathway into a number of different career options including farm advisor, fertiliser representative, shepherd and livestock agent and many others, along with of course, that of farm manager.” The diploma is a popular option with limited places at each venue so students are urged to enroll now for the coming year. HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

by Ann Morgan Libby Plummer grew up in Hawke’s Bay, near where her grandfather bred horses at Te Pohue. Her time on the farm helping with the animals eventually steered her into the veterinarian nurse profession.

“I

was always a country girl at heart. We lived on a lifestyle block and had horses. They were in the blood with my grandfather having horses, and I just fell into enjoying them and ended up riding with friends,” says Libby. “I had to spend time in hospital when I was younger and whilst there the pony I rode was sold, so when I got out of hospital mum decided to get me my own horse — a little Welsh pony.” When Libby left high school she had no idea what she wanted to do — it was either become a shepherd or work with horses.

“I did a Gateway course through school at a local horse stud. I was offered a job and worked there for about a year, then I decided to get a qualification of some type, so looked into a vet nursing course at the Eastern Institute of Technology. “I heard it was a good course, and at the time it was a six-month animal care course and then later you continued into vet nursing. There was a time gap so I travelled to Australia and worked with polo ponies for five months.” Polo pony work involved exercising, grooming and the constant care of the pony for the players. Libby Plummer believes helping her grandfather on his farm as a young girl is one reason she decided to work with animals

Helping her grandfather with his horses gave Libby a keen interest in riding

“It was something really different — it was hard work and long days. It was a great experience — there were really nice horses and there were grooms from a lot of countries. “When I returned home to study I did work experience here at CHB Vets Ltd in Waipukurau. After I finished the course I was lucky enough to secure a position at the clinic. “My role is a veterinary assistant and I do reception and nursing. Our clinic also works with farm animals, and my goal is to eventually get into the large animal side of things. “We assist the vet with calving and different things, passing instruments and generally help where needed. We

are the vets ‘right hand’. The client calls the vet if they are concerned in any way about their animals. After a discussion about the symptoms or problems the vet decides if a farm visit is necessary. “We hold horses or stock for assessment or if bloods are needed. There are a lot of different issues that can happen on farms and that can be very interesting. Massey university has a vet tech course and this would be great for people wanting to move into the larger framework. “Even small animals are like family to people and it is great seeing them come into the clinic unwell and then leave healthier and on the mend, and their owners are settled.

November 2017

Libby’s goal is to eventually work in the large animal side of the veterinary industry

“I am really happy with where I am at. We advise people that if you are concerned about an animal, we would rather you call us and talk over the phone, where we can say something is fine and normal rather than not do anything and leave it and have a negative scenario on hand. “It is best to ask the questions and be safe rather than sorry — no matter what type of animal, farm or domestic, there are no silly questions. “If we know early in the day what is going on we can try and fix it rather than in the middle of the night, although at times, of course, things happen suddenly. Assisting with surgeries is exciting. It is all exciting, nothing in the

day is boring. They teach you when you study but you learn best on the job. Everything comes with experience. It is a very hands on sort of role. “Once people are in the industry they don’t want to get out — not many people leave. We can give advice on anything, including food. A vet has to study all species of animals, including turtles, goats, horses, cats and birds. As a nurse it is a very rewarding job to be in. “Owning animals of any type is a responsibility and ensuring they are properly cared for is important. “Knowing that vets are not scary but are there to help is important too, and we would rather you call than leave an animal to suffer in any way.”

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

by Ann Morgan Stuart Williams and friends, Rex and Ian Alexander, founded the Auckland Romney Development Group in 1968, hoping to improve the issues sheep farmers were having with facial eczema, along with the overall performance of the breed.

T

he men, and other farmers who joined the quest, contributed one per cent of their breeding flocks to a central flock run by Rex Alexander for genetic development purposes. The group is now called Advanced Romney Designer Genetics (ARDG) and Jenny Savannah and her husband have taken over the role from her father Stuart, as have Rex and Ian’s children on their farms along with the Steeds and Marchants families, that comprise the rest of the ARDG. “In that first year, the mixed age flock lambed 154 per cent and the following year Rex lost 52 per cent of that flock to facial eczema,” said Jenny. The first field trials for FE testing were set up in 1979. Animals were tested under a natural challenge and in 1984

the first sporidesmin testing took place on rams. The testing rate started at 0.1mg/kg and the group now tests at the highest level available 0.65mg/kg. The sheep are dosed with the concentrated facial eczema spore toxin and bled at 21 days to see what the GGT levels are. This measures liver damage. The programme is provided by Ramguard Facial Eczema Tolerance Testing Services, and the ARDG are FE Gold accredited having met the rigorous requirements and testing history to be members. “Last year was a good example of how far we have come with improvements. There were huge spore counts in the North Island and areas not previously at risk of FE. Very few animals bred from our rams had FE. Back in the

70s it would have killed at least half of the flocks. “Facial eczema has been the biggest trait we focussed on because it is no good having high growth or fertility rates if your animals are going to die anyway. Survival is our number one priority, that is why the project began. In the early 70s farmers were losing up to 40 per cent of their flock. “Dad and the Alexander brothers were like-minded guys who thought they could do something about the problem that they believed was hereditary — science now shows it is a highly heritable trait. “With climate change, FE is spreading across the country. Those buying our rams have realised that their lambs are going to be tolerant, which is a good

thing,” said Jenny. “We have also been worm resilience and resistance testing for more than 17 years. Animals are individually fecal-egg tested and put through a growth rate versus worm burden test. “We also test for genetic traits needed in a versatile sheep, reproduction, growth, survival and meat, and we record fleece weight. Wool weight is a genetic trait and we have made good gains in weights and qualities. “If you have to shear the sheep, you may as well get as much as you can for it.” Jenny says that although there has been a 26 per cent decrease in sheep in New Zealand since 2005, we still export a similar quantity of lamb, testimony

to the improved performance of New Zealand’s flocks. “We couldn’t have done this without everyone involved, from the scientists, to the companies supporting us. “There are still farmers who don’t have as much FE and think they will be fine, but the predictions are most sheep farms in New Zealand will eventually be affected in some way. “Not many ram breeders have the same FE tolerance that we have. Potentially the only sheep alive in the future could be the FE tolerant. “We have technology and help that our fathers didn’t have. My dad had more than 1,000 recorded ewes to get the result we now get with 400. “We have equipment such as automatic

drafters that capture data, so what took our dads a whole day, can now be done in a couple of hours, along with DNA testing provided by Zoetis, which gives us a huge amount of information to select from. “From 1970 until now, to have the huge improvement in FE tolerance over so few generations is incredible.” The ARDG started their testing process completely blind and didn’t know if what they wanted to achieve was going to work. “They had to have faith in what the scientists said. They embraced the knowledge and advice and it paid off more than they thought it would. For more information people can visit the website ardg.co.nz.” PROUD SPONSOR OF

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES ADVERTORIAL

ADVERTORIAL

Improving joints (Part 3) Back in 2011 there was some interesting emerging research that suggested the traditional osteoarthritis supplements were perhaps targeting the wrong ingredient. Most supplements were heavily weighted towards glucosamine sulphate with a smaller amount of chondroitin sulphate (CS). As a result of this research I completely reformulated my Bettaflex joint supplement. I did two things. Firstly I increased CS to 380mg per capsule and secondly added a 95% curcumin (turmeric) extract. This gave a maintenance dose of 760mg of CS. Almost immediately clients reported better results on the new formulation. These results were increased where we added 1-2 months on a double dose (4 capsules daily) which delivered over 1500mg of CS. Over the last few years there has been still more quality research into the benefits of CS with knee osteoarthritis. Just last year a study compared 1,200mg of chondroitin sulphate 1,200mg with a leading COX-2 selective anti-inflammatory arthritis medication. The study was over two years and used MRI to establish the

benefits. This was a high quality double-blind placebo controlled trial involving 200 people over 24 months. It concluded that while both groups had similar improvements in comfort, MRI analysis showed the CS group had much greater reduction in cartilage loss. This finding was consistent with five other studies looking at the benefits of CS for knee OA. While most of the studies have been with knee OA, I have found that most joints affected by OA can be helped. While such studies are useful really it is all about what happens to an individual with osteoarthritis. This is why I prefer to create a personalised programme which takes many factors like age, weight, medications, diet and exercise into consideration. Please contact me for further information. Abundant Health Bettaflex Super Joint Formula

Beware the summer sun by Dr Toby Nelson

Our skin has many functions. The first and most obvious is to provide protection from external sources of injury. One such source is ultraviolet radiation (UVR) from the sun. We need a small amount of UVR to produce vitamin-D but over time excessive UVR causes premature skin aging and visible signs of sun damage. In some cases this can develop into a skin cancer. There are three main types and all are increasing in incidence in New Zealand. The commonest type is basal cell carcinoma, BCC — a slow growing cancer that erodes into the surrounding skin. It is sometimes called a ‘rodent’ ulcer. The face is the most common site therefore, treatment should not be delayed in order to avoid unsightly skin damage. The next most common is squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Like BCC the majority of cases are caused by UVR damage therefore, arise on sunexposed skin. SCC can rarely spread to other parts of the body (metastasis). SCC are often painful lumps, growing quickly over weeks. They require urgent surgical excision. Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer. It arises from a cell in the skin called a melanocyte which produces the brown pigment when we tan. Groups of melanocytes are called

moles. Melanoma is caused by UVR but also genetics and reasons that are not fully understood play a role. People of all skin colour can develop melanoma. Melanoma can metastasise leading to death. Any new or changing moles that are unlike the rest of your skin should be reviewed urgently. For more information please contact The Skin Centre on Freephone 0800 754 623 or check out our website skincentre.com.

What is Bettaflex? • Bettaflex is a joint support formula to promote healthy joint cartilage function. • Bettaflex combines high grade chondroitin sulphate, glucosamine sulphate and a potent 95% curcumin (turmeric) extract. • Each capsule of Bettaflex contains 382mg of high grade chondroitin, 425mg of glucosamine and 50mg of curcumin extract.

How can Bettaflex help?

BEST BUY! $79.95 for 3 bottles free freight or 1 bottle for $28.95 plus $4.99 postage.

• Chondroitin and glucosamine are building blocks of cartilage. • Supplementation with correct levels can support healthy cartilage function and cartilage repair processes. • Curcumin from turmeric helps to balance joint immune function to support joint health. • Research suggests chondroitin is effective only at levels of over 700mg daily.

John Arts comments: “I formulated Bettaflex based on the latest research into natural compounds that can help with joint support and function. The normal dose is 2 capsules daily but I recommend a double dose for the first 1-2 bottles to saturate joint tissue.” (John Arts, Founder Abundant Health Ltd)

Consultation launched for biosecurity

November 2017

Sheep and beef farmers are being encouraged to have their say on a proposal to give the sector a direct say in readiness and response to biosecurity threats. Beef + Lamb New Zealand, in conjunction with DairyNZ and Deer Industry New Zealand, is launching consultation on a proposal to sign a Government Industry Agreement for Biosecurity Readiness and Response Deed. Information packs outlining the proposal are due to arrive in farmers’ mailboxes and the consultation officially got underway from October 31. Sam McIvor, chief executive of B+LNZ, said the GIA was about working together to protect farmers from exotic pests and diseases. “Farmers consistently tell us that biosecurity risks are among the biggest risks we face as an industry. “Currently, when hard decisions are being made about how New Zealand prepares to respond to an exotic pest or disease incursion and, more importantly, what to do during an actual response — we are ‘in the room’ and consulted, but it is the Government that makes all the final decisions. “Signing the GIA would give sheep and beef farmers, through B+LNZ, a seat at the biosecurity decision-making table. Alongside other GIA Signatories, we would have more direct influence on biosecurity preparedness and response decision making. “There are costs associated with signing the GIA, because it means agreeing to contribute to readiness and response costs. The level of these contributions would depend on the significance of the pest or disease to the sheep and beef sector. “Importantly, our sector could also choose to set a funding limit as part of a GIA Operational Agreement. We think that the benefits of signing the GIA, with increased certainty and control over our own biosecurity destiny, justifies potential costs. We would be better prepared, have a pre-agreed set of minimum readiness and response commitments between industry and government, and agreed limits on our industry’s potential cost-share for readiness and response activities.

“If we don’t sign the GIA, we will have much less influence over the decisions that affect our sector.” Mr McIvor said the Government could also use powers under the Biosecurity Act 1993 to recover costs from industries that benefit from a response even if they have not signed the GIA. “That would be a poor outcome for our sector and we would lose the opportunity to work together with government and other industries under the GIA to manage fundamental risks to all livestock farmers. “It is vital farmers have their say on this important matter.” Consultation ends on December 6, 2017. Farmers can find out more information by visiting beeflambnz.com/gia

Calling in on the country by Andy Bryenton

So, you’ve managed to become the one relative in the entire extended clan who happens to run a successful farm, or who has retreated from the big city to enjoy the lifestyle block ‘good life’. The rural idyll — complete with lots of hard work, of course — looks pretty appealing to suburban siblings as the holidays roll around, and your position amidst the green hills or near the coast suddenly becomes a magnet for family and friends. If you’re generous and game enough to play host to all those cousins, aunties, uncles, kids and grandkids (not to mention old university mates, work buddies and sports’ team acquaintances) who ‘were just in the area’ over Christmas and New Years, then we salute you. But there are a few things to know which will make preparing for the coming ‘tent city’ that little bit easier. First, tell them what to expect. A holiday in the country is not the RitzCarlton, and that’s a big part of its appeal. Be straight up and honest about the need for your rellys to bring plenty of insect repellent, and all the gear to keep their little camp site self sufficient. fridges, xboxes, televisions and hair straighteners isn’t really camping, is it? If you’re playing host while summer farming chores are still ongoing, it’s also good to gently remind the folks that the concept of a ‘holiday’ is a bit blurry in the agricultural sector. And that a farm comes with hazards for the unwary. That being said, there’s something great about helping teach the young ones just where their breakfast eggs and milk come from. The hard part of hosting your family and friends out in the country is not

becoming like John Cleese’s mad hotelier Basil Fawlty. There’s such a thing as being a gracious host, but don’t try to be a chef, butler, valet and tour guide as well. Expect your guests to pitch in and they’ll likely be happy to help. Remember that sometimes a gentle reminder that you can’t take hour long showers on tank water in summer goes a long way. That a bit of help around the barbie and the beer fridge goes along way toward securing next year’s hearty welcome.

Spoiled for choice in sizzle season by Andy Bryenton

The barbecue used to be a simple thing. Back in the past this method of cooking got its name from pirates who, unable to muster up a chef’s skills, simply dragged the iron grille from their ship’s gunpowder hold, set it up over a fire and threw freshcaught slices of wild pork on top. But now the art of the true barbecue is making its presence felt. Through the television and internet we’re graced with visions of the true pitmasters of this culinary way of life, and tastes are changing. Say that you’re planning a summer barbie today and people will be asking about your plans for a dry rub for that brisket, or your secrets to perfect slow cooked pulled pork. This means making a fundamental choice before the summer season really hits. It’s time to assess the grill itself, and see what kind of cooking you’re going to indulge your friends and family with. Choosing a classic charcoal kettle marks you out as a purist, and is sure to deliver a real old-fashioned flavour. There’s a lot more can be achieved with this classic design than many people realise, and it all comes down to a

careful use of charcoal to deliver slow and even heat. A gas grill has been the front runner for many households for the past decade or more, and is also a versatile outdoor kitchen thanks to its lack of actual coal or wood chips. Definitely a must for the boat, a gas grill may not be able to provide that smokey flavour all on its own, but quick and even heat mean that it’s a great platform for cooking all kinds of different fare, from seafood to steaks and even, with the fitment of the right accessories, a mean rotisserie. The outdoor cooking setup of the moment, however, features an offset firebox in the style of barbecues in the American southwest. This method allows a fire to be kindled in a separate chamber from the meat itself, and delicately flavoured wood chips can be added to mix

their aroma with the slowly cooking main course. For the master of the backyard kitchen, there are barbecues which combine three or more of these functions — offset firebox, gas grill and charcoal, or gas, charcoal and a rotisserie. No matter how you grill, the key to a great result is to choose the best cuts of meat, to prep with marinades and rubs for flavour well in advance, and to be patient. Holiday Guide A whole world to experience by Andy Bryenton

They say that travel broadens the mind, but in this era of broadband and globalised entertainment it does far more than that. Travelling to far-flung places makes all the images you’ve seen of them more real, and adds that elusive element often missing from documentaries and movies — the real, down to earth culture of the people who live there. Here are some top tips from questioning seasoned world adventurers about how to enjoy the wide world NEW ZEALAND SOUTH ISLAND 2018 Nature Walking Tour for Seniors

18 Day Tour: Departs 25 April 2018 $4,800 per person (twin/double) Join us for 16 beautiful nature walks exploring the South Islands most iconic features from pristine waterways, wild untamed beaches, forested lakes, estuaries, river trails, gold fields, bird sanctuaries. around us. 1. Go somewhere off the tourist trails. We all want to visit the pyramids, Machu Picchu or the Eiffel Tower, but the reality which lives around these monuments and attractions is what you’ll remember. By all means visit the icons of world travel, but look below the surface too — go where the locals go to eat, check out small music venues, theatre or cinema in the local language, and, just like a Kiwi holiday, remember that some of the most

Oi! DON’T TXT & DRIVE

HOSTED JOURNEYS

interesting attractions are often under-advertised. 2. Don’t be afraid to try the local cuisine. Tales abound of world travellers sticking to fast food franchises for fear of food poisoning. But most nations have tourist-friendly rules for food prep, even for street vendors. Of course there are exceptions, but no dirty chef stays in business long. See where the local folks eat and be adventurous. Telling tall tales about trying scorpions in honey or spicy squid is much more interesting than a parade of hamburgers. 3. Be cautious with your currency. But don’t treat everyone as a potential criminal. Sadly, every country has it’s bad apples, so it’s prudent to invest in a money belt that sits close to your skin, and beware of crimes uncommon in New Zealand like pickpocketing. This being said, most people will be happy to

help you with things like advice, directions and translations — just as we are in New Zealand. 4. Learn a little of the language. The locals will appreciate you trying, even if you mangle their dialect a little. Try to study some key phrases even if you plan to use a translation device or app — being able to say thank you, hello, good evening, and ask for the location of key facilities will make you seem more approachable. Research local customs too — little things like whether or not to take your shoes off, shake hands, sit or stand for cultural ceremonies — it makes you seem like a clued-in world traveller and a gracious guest. Most of all, have fun. Try to get the most out of each day, even if it means throwing carefully made plans out the window to explore or join in an event that’s happening where you happen to be.

It’s all just around the corner

100 years of the RAF

When it comes to exotic holiday destination, it’s often easy to miss the fact that we are living right inside one. International tourists all have a visit to New Zealand on their ‘must do’ list, so isn’t it strange that many of us who are lucky enough to be born here have never sampled the sights and scenery that makes our own land unique? Of course, there are plenty of great reasons to check out a part of the nation you’ve never visited. From the breathtaking vistas of Fiordland through to the high country grandeur which formed the backdrop for Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, you’ll never have to learn a single foreign phrase or change your currency once. And if your work means there’s only time for a quick break away, you’ll spend less time on board long haul flights and queueing in airports if you opt for a Kiwi getaway. Tourism is one of our biggest earners, and there are plenty of attractions both natural — Waitomo Caves, the thermal playground of Rotorua, the beauty of the Heaphy Track — and man-made to take in. Have you ever taken a trip on a river jetboat? Jumped off the bungee swing in Queenstown? See the northern coast from a gyrocopter, or the Bay of Island from under a parachute? You could even tone it right down and simply travel between the vineyards of Marlborough on a winery tour, or take in a weekend of charter fishing, culminating in some fine seafood.

A leisurely 23 day premium escorted tour departing 27th June 2018. Including Shuttleworth Military Pageant, Royal International Air Tattoo, Duxford’s Flying Legends, Nuclear Bunker, Bletchley Park, RAF Wyton Mosquito Museum, Yorkshire Air Museum, Newark Air Museum, RAF Cosford and more. 23 days, $10,895 per person twin share.

STAY AFLOAT Of course, the classic Kiwi vacation is rumoured to have gone missing over the years, as camp grounds become luxury apartments. But it’s still out there. A top pick for this year is to get into some nostalgia or retro camping — the new trend which rejects ‘glamping’ and its electronic creature comforts. Pack an old-fashioned tent and a charcoal kettle grill, book in with one of the many great ‘no frills’ camp grounds

which still dot the coast, and do it the old-fashioned way. You might get sand in your sandwiches and zinc on your nose, but recapturing the summer good life requires only a single big commitment. Leave your cellphone at home. The Kiwi camping definition of ‘checking up online’ is seeing if that surfcaster stuck in the sand has picked up any bites.

Summer is almost upon us and exploring the many activities and destinations around the Hawke’s Bay area is something both locals and tourists can enjoy. This time of year is the perfect opportunity to experience everything the region has to offer, including the two gannet colonies at Cape Kidnappers and the well-established wine culture whilst enjoying the sunshine. The 13-hectare reserve at Cape Kidnappers is managed by the Department of Conservation and includes the Saddle and Black Reef gannet colonies. Both are closed to public access, however the Black Reef colony can be viewed from the beach whilst the Plateau colony allows easy viewing of nesting gannets and offers good panoramic views of the headland. This colony is located on private land and visitors are reminded to cooperate with the landowners by keeping to the defined track and not disturbing stock. The whole family can get up close and personal with the animals at the Hawke’s Bay Farmyard Zoo and try their hand at feeding many of them for an experience you won’t forget. experience with three hectares of limestone walkways. The Morere Hot Springs produce 250,000 litres a day of hot ancient sea water. Known for its therapeutic values, the water is piped to a series of public and private hot pools and is the place to take a relaxing soak and soothe the soul. The springs are set in 364 hectares of native bush, with accommodation and a multitude of walking tracks located nearby. The reserve is also

one of the last remaining tracts of lowland rainforest on the east coast of New Zealand. There are also a number of well connected cycle trails in the Hawke’s Bay and the quiet back roads make this a great place to see the sights whilst keeping fit. Whatever it is you are looking to do, whether it be a game of golf or visiting the art deco township of Napier, be sure to make the most of the natural features the Hawke’s Bay has to offer.

Irrigation Matters with Clem Powell

Available in 63Litre and 94Litre, stainless steel bin on a tipping frame. Plugs into standard 230v socket. Fitted with 2 hour timer and neon. Have been in the market for over 30 years.

With the impending proposal for a reduction in irrigation water take in many parts of the country, it is possibly a good time to consider efficiency in water application. plant sip from the reservoir (existing moisture content) but finally you have to replenish and in a greater amount to catch up. Unfortunately by the time you realise the plant has stopped growing you are way behind. The application method is somewhat secondary as long as it is achieved. So bang goes the first claim. Secondly, science tells us that when we expose water to warm air, evaporation occurs. How much occurs is governed mostly by how much surface area is exposed and how saturated the air is. We can’t do much about the air saturation but we can keep droplet size up to reduce percentage of exposure. Remember school science? A globe (droplet) increases mass x 4 each time you double its diameter but the surface area only doubles. This principle works for both sprinklers, large guns and pivot sprinklers etc. Sprinklers tend to have smaller droplets. So bang goes the second claim Thirdly, water penetration - and we are assuming the ground has not been left to go rock hard- is a hydraulic result.

PUMPING PROBLEM?

Ace offal cookers for dog and pig food, also available as grain cookers for horses

The mystery of irrigation sprinklers Sprinklers are ubiquitous on the irrigation landscape but how well do they actually do their job? There are many claims bandied about, often from branded sprinkler systems, such as ‘they require less water than other methods’ or ‘they have less evaporation than big guns’ or ‘they achieve greater soil penetration with less quantity etc etc. How true are these claims? Firstly irrigation is the replacement of moisture which is lost through the plant growing and evaporation from the ground, depending on crop cover, soil type etc. So if you need 5mm/day to beat evapotranspiration then you need to apply 50,000 l/ha/day as average. In other words take the mm application required and multiply by 10,000= l/ha/ day required. It also depends what the evapotranspiration conditions are. NIWA publish data which may be some use if you have a test point near you. In any case you cannot make the plant starve/thirst without some loss in growth. For a short term you can consider the ground itself as being like a reservoir for the plant. You can let the

Within reason, the more water you apply the more penetration you get. It’s not possible for 1mm of application to do the same as 2mm. So bang goes that claim. I know Variable Rate Irrigation with GPS plotting/mapping is helping to reduce water used, but this is probably outside what most readers are considering. Fixed sprinklers also suffer from excess application due to overlap. The most common placement of sprinklers is on a square pattern. Easy spacing requires not too much thinking and fits most paddocks. However some areas are getting four times the application of others. hil grew up on the family sheep and beef farm in Te Anau, and is a consultant for Ag First and at 57 years old received the Beef + Lamb NZ Sheep and Beef Rural Professional of the Year award. “When I was younger I did a year shepherding whilst studying for my Ag Degree, and loved it. I was tempted to stay farming but chose to finish my degree,” says Phil. I often wonder what would I have become — a farm manager or something else. I started working for MAF and changed to a commercial consultancy role. Back then it was far easier to start compared to what young consultants have today. There

aren’t so many one to one consultancy opportunities now.” Phil says there is more technology transfer now but he believes one to one contact has the most impact. “Through MAF I participated in an exchange programme with the UK, Wales and Scotland. Working with their consultancy divisions I saw the change from free Government advice through to consultancy. “As a consultant people are paying you and demand that you focus on what is most important to them, and that (in itself) is most important. “I moved to Hawke’s Bay and in 1995 there were 11 of us scattered across

LIVESTOCK the country that started AgFirst, and 22 years on we have approximately 40 consultants and other staff. “There is a huge range of what we do. I focus on planning with my clients and follow the principles of the farm management cycle — plan, monitor, Implement and review. We review these plans regularly on a formal basis and use the Farmax Farm management system as our cornerstone.” Phil is a director and founding shareholder of Farmax. Farmers lay out their plan on the system and update it monthly with the purchase, sales, weights and see how it compares to what they planned. “We look at feed supply and demand and identify opportunities or challenges — either physical, like running out of feed or financial. “Over the past 22 years I have also provided consultancy in South America and Australia. Kiwi farmers are pretty good and sharp but so are other operators all around the world. “Our economic climate and free market approach here is positive. There is quite a lot of trust in sharing information and stock with each other. Overseas farmers don’t seem to integrate as much as we do.” Phil believes the formation of farmer co-ops have helped influence New Zealand’s cooperative culture. “That is why discussion groups have worked over the years. We help lay out a roadmap to implement the solution. It is confirming or analysis to support or challenge their decision. “They may know how to feed cattle better, but not have the confidence to allocate feed by subdividing the block. We help create a structure. “In an urban business people report to a management structure — in farming, particularly family farm businesses, they often don’t need to report to anyone and so bringing in a third party who is on their team, understanding what they want to achieve, is a role we fill. “I believe consultancy is a fantastic investment. I enjoy seeing results and I love seeing succession from one generation to another. I have a few farms where I am working with both

generations. You see what mum and dad have done and you have seen the children become adults. “When families are passing these multi-million dollar assets across there are issues that arise. I enjoy helping families lay out a plan, also seeing below average farms come up to above average is exciting. Some may have a lot of debt and challenges so we tailor a strategy to their resources. I have worked in scenarios where we identify the best thing to do is sell. You help them with their decisions like how and when and be realistic. “The best operators make us justify the conclusions we draw and demand a good analysis of things rather than just our opinion. We learn tremendously from our clients. Receiving the Rural Professional award was great recognition from my peers. “These awards are encouraging for those who have because consultancy is an important part of farming.”

Game of two halves To complete the skills needed for our consultancy we have encouraged participation from specialists in specific fields. Mark Dixon focusses on feed balancing and making the best of the choices of feed available. I have invited him to share his thoughts: To maximise genetic potential in dairy cows having a solid game plan is crucial. The game plan needs to begin at least 21 days before calving. Consider the season as a world cup rugby test match.

History has taught us that winning that game requires more than an 80 minute performance. This is no different in ruminant dairy nutrition. Our transition period is our vital warm up but without a good transition plan we can’t expect our cows to perform to their potential. A strong start sets the platform for a winning season. As far as purchasing genetic potential goes, most farmers are buying the ‘Ritchie McCaw’s’ for performance. I haven’t met a farmer yet that has not been extremely proud of the genetics in their herd, but when it comes to formulating a plan around unlocking the genetic potential the conversation always comes back to cents/kg/dm, or residuals. cheapest nutrition on the market and monitor the residuals on the plate or bowl as a gauge of profitability and performance Unlocking your cow’s genetic potential requires planning and preparation around nutrition. Your cows are looking for this every day when you pull the feed cord in the shed, the bat latch drops to the feed pad, or they make it to the paddock that you have chosen for their daily nutritional requirements. Despite what you may have been told, pasture is not a complete diet but luckily it doesn’t take much to balance some of the shortfalls that limit production and health. After experiencing one of the wettest springs in history this season, one would say the first half has been challenging and your cows may not have hit their peak. Don’t give up. Holding cows at a reasonable production level once in-calf for most of the second half can make up for them not peaking where you would have liked. How many times have we seen the All Blacks come from behind and win. To do this we need to head to the changing sheds have a rock solid half-

time discussion, and formulate a total farm system approach to ensuring your cows have everything they need to come through the second half of the season on top and be profitable. All Blacks have never won a test match at half time — it’s a game of two halves. If you want help formulating a successful game plan then please give us a call — Mark Dixon 027 546 2900

BATTERY ADDITIVE

Battery Revitalizer & Conditioner A lot of people in our Recharge Conditioning Program are getting 8 to 10 years out of their batteries. Just dose them when you buy them, treat them every two years and give them an overnight charge twice a year between treatments and eliminate the sulphation problem, A car battery can be treated for around $5. Yes you can treat sealed batteries, simply drill into each cell, top up with water, treat, charge and reseal with silicone, sika-flex or a plastic bung.
