It is the first time any council in the country has used the latest airborne electromagnetic survey technology called SkyTEM. “The region’s aquifers are in effect having a scan to see what they look like inside, and greatly improve understanding of how they are working so they can be kept healthy for the future,” says science manager Dr Jeff Smith. “The regional council, in partnership with the Provincial Growth Fund and GNS Science, is spending money on tried and true, cutting edge Danish SkyTEM technology that has been used extensively overseas.” The total cost for the project is $4.3 million. It is a joint effort with the PGF contributing $2.15 million, the regional council $1.85 million and GNS Science assisting with $300,000. People may see a low-flying helicopter towing a large hoop hanging from a cable from around January 20 2020, until the beginning of March. It will fly over Heretaunga Plains, Ruataniwha Plains and Otane and Poukawa Basins and scan them. The helicopter won’t be flying over built-up urban areas like Napier, Hastings and Havelock. “The SkyTEM technology will give a 3D view up to 300 metres deep underground where no one has ever

seen before, to truly understand how the aquifer systems work. Water management is crucially important for the future of our region. The more we know about our aquifers and how they are working, the better our decision making can be. “The information from the 3D aquifer mapping survey has significant value for the community in understanding the region’s water resource. The results will be freely shared and available to tangata whenua, other councils and community groups. “The 3D aquifer mapping project is one of four freshwater projects announced during the PGF allocations to Hawke’s Bay in June. The others are a whole-of-region freshwater assessment, and pre-feasibility investigations on a Heretaunga Flow Enhancement/Water Storage Initiative and a Tukituki Water Security Initiative.” GNS Science is working closely with the regional council on the project. It says that internationally, similar initiatives have resulted in significant advances in the mapping, modelling and management of groundwater systems. For more information, go to hbrc. govt.nz, and search #3Dwater. During the flying period, there will be regular updates on the website, Facebook page and local radio stations.

Central Hawke’s Bay Mayor Alex Walker was recently elected as the Local Government New Zealand National Council Rural Sector chair and representative. Mayor Walker is set to make her mark on a national scale after being elected into two positions within the Local Government New Zealand National representative framework. Nominated as LGNZ Rural Sector chair and Rural Sector National Council representative, she recently ran unopposed for both positions. Sector representatives are elected every three years with the term reflecting the local body elections triennium. Both appointments take effect immediately. The LGNZ National Council is the elected leadership of LGNZ, made up of 18 elected members from throughout New Zealand who represent the membership of 61 territorial, 11 regional, and six unitary councils and 21 local boards of Auckland. Mayor Walker will meet as a representative of the national council six times a year, with the first meeting, a strategy day, taking place Thursday, December 5. Representing the national interests of councils in New Zealand and leading best practice in the local government sector, LGNZ provides advocacy and policy services, business support, advice and training to assist members to build successful communities throughout New Zealand.

“I feel privileged to represent the rural sector on the national council and look forward to championing issues of social, economic, environmental and cultural importance to rural councils and communities as both chair and representative for the sector,” says Mayor Walker. “As Central Hawke’s Bay continues to grow and develop, we are an example of a rural district, which is truly thriving but which shares the challenges of size, infrastructure pressure and rates affordability that other rural councils around the country are facing. My aim is to continue to strengthen the position of our councils in the eyes of the government for the benefit of our community. As elected members in rural districts, we are more closely connected with the needs of our communities than any other elected representative at any level of government.” Each council across New Zealand is a member of one of four sector groups represented within the national council, including metropolitan, regional, rural and provincial. Central Hawke’s Bay District Council sits within the rural sector and meets with the provincial sector three times a year, seeing an attendance of up to 100 members.

Approximately three-quarters of the property is moderate to steep hill country, the rest is flats. “I do a large amount of yard work, which is good experience for my eight sheepdogs. I only had a couple of dogs when I started here and had to buy a few more to cope with my workload. “I bought pups so I could break them in myself and I really enjoy training them. I get around on a farm bike, but recently bought a horse as it is handy in winter when the tracks get a bit slippery and it is also a quieter way of handling the stock. “I grew up in Hamilton and got my start in the industry at Waipaoa Station, which is an hour’s drive north of Gisborne. By chance, I heard about Waipaoa’s two-year cadetship and attended the open day. It opened my eyes to the agri-food sector and endless opportunities within it.” Kristy was one of five accepted into the 2017 intake. “For someone new to the industry I couldn’t think of anything better than

doing a cadetship,” she said. “Over my two years at Waipaoa Station, I was exposed to all aspects of the industry. Our fencing and dog handling tutors were some of the best in the business. Cadets are trained in all aspects of livestock handling, husbandry and feed budgeting. “The skills we are taught in the classroom are able to be applied out in the paddock and we graduate with several qualifications and are work-ready. “When I started there I knew that sheep and cows ate grass and that was about the extent of my farming knowledge. Over the past two-and-a-half

years I worked hard to expand my skills and knowledge. My mum encouraged me to enter the Ahuwhenua Young Maori Farmer awards and I submitted my application two days before entries closed. I was nervous about putting myself out there, but then I realised I had nothing to be afraid of, so I gave it a go. “The award is designed to recognise talented up-and-coming young Maori farmers. Winning it this year has been an amazing experience and has been a great way to get my name out there and will look good on my curriculum vitae when I want to step up to a manager’s position.” As part of the award, Kristy went to the Fieldays with AgResearch and attended a dinner focussing on disruptive technologies in the agri-food sector. Lead judge Peter Little said Kristy exemplified all that is good about

young Maori who are making successful careers in the primary sector. “Kristy has shown great commitment to her work, excellent leadership and will do a great job as a role model for other young people contemplating a career in the agribusiness sector,” he said. As part of the awards process, Kristy participated in a two-day study tour with the other two finalists. “It was extremely beneficial and we got introduced to a number of industry professionals. I really enjoyed the leadership and goal setting course run by PrimaryITO. I have been a member of the local NZ Young Farmers club since 2017 and joined not long after it was started. We began with about five paidup members, but we have got close to 20 now. weeks of practical work on three farms including Rawahi Romney Ram stud and last summer I spent 11 weeks on Siberia Station near Hunterville, which has 19,000 breeding ewes and just under 2,000 cattle. “The job involved lots of yard work, dagging and drenching with eight of us during weaning and shearing. Learning about large-scale commercial farming was really eye-opening as you are critically looking at every animal’s potential.” Phoebe says with different goals and objectives, it was encouraging working as part of a big team in a different type of community. “We embraced new systems, and it’s going to be interesting to compare Brazil’s farming systems with what we

are familiar with, in New Zealand. Brazil has a population of 210 million and is the largest country in South America. It has the world’s biggest commercial cattle and beef herd and is the largest cattle meat exporter, according to Trade and Enterprise NZ. It is also the world’s top producer of coffee and sugar cane. “I have already secured employment at West Wanaka Station when I return. The station runs 14,000 breeding ewes, 2,000 deer and 1,500 cattle. I got the job through word of mouth and am extremely fortunate. A lot of students still don’t have jobs to go to after their exams finish. “A motto I live by is ‘you have got to be in it to win it’. Phoebe was recently awarded a $5,000 scholarship from Silver Fern Farms. “I applied after seeing a post encouraging applications on a NZ Young Farmers social media account. I attended the co-op’s three-day shareholders’ conference, which had an impressive lineup of thought-provoking guest speakers. There were lots of forward-thinking ideas — it definitely got my brain ticking over and engaged. I was astounded to be chosen and am going to put the money towards my student loan. “I will miss being part of Lincoln Young Farmers. It is a very active club, and we

have 27 club events in the 24 studying weeks in the university calendar. One of the biggest benefits is that you get to know students in younger and older year groups. It is a great way to make friends and contacts. “I am looking at going rural banking, but those graduate roles are difficult to secure so until then I will gain onfarm experience. “In Brazil, I am looking forward to being exposed to a new culture, beliefs, objectives and morals behind why they do things. “It is a good scholarship, and it is cool how they give young people the opportunity to go out and see the world. I recommend all young people interested in a career in farming to apply as it is a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

Dung beetles to the rescue

by Ann van Engelen

Dr Shaun Forgie grew up travelling the world and is now helping New Zealand farmers transform animal dung into a useful product through dung beetles.

“M

ost of my childhood was in New Zealand, and as an adult, I lived in places like Argentina and South Africa,” said Shaun. Shaun gained his bachelor’s degree majoring in marine biology and master’s degree in zoology with honours in entomology, which is the study of insects. “I investigated dung beetles here in New Zealand, then completed my PhD in Pretoria, South Africa on ball-rolling dung beetles. Dung beetles here are restricted to native forests and bush habitats. When we started importing livestock, no one thought about needing the dung beetle to clean up the poo, and that is where the problem started. We have an abundance of poo, creating a loss of productivity as it just sits on the paddock.

“Hawaii and Australia pioneered the way and imported exotic pastoral dung beetles as the native ones were not going in to demolish it. Cow’s poo about 10 times a day creating a habitat for nasty flies such as the biting flies in Australia. Dung contains disease pathogens and gut parasites that get shat out to complete their cycle. “New Zealand has lots of rain, so we have water contamination problems in high rainfall areas with water coming off pastures getting into the waterways. In many instances, it may contain contaminants like pesticide residuals plus disease pathogens such as E coli, salmonella and giardia — mainly because dung is not getting buried into the soil rapidly because of lack of the beetles. I could see there was a problem here and set about improving my understanding and establishing a

solution. We went through a very fastidious process applying through the government and the Environmental Protection Authority to bring in 11 different types of beetles suitable to our conditions and climate. Ours are mainly from South-West Europe and Southern Africa. “Dung is a 24/7 — 365-day problem and the beetles get rid of a pile in around 24 hours to a few days. Different beetles are active at different times of the year, giving year-round dung control. They fly from dung pat to dung pat and set about making tunnels 30cm and 90cm in the soil underneath the pats for nesting. These are filled with the dung and made into balls or

The hatching larvae feed on the ball and what is left in the soil once the new adults emerge is organic carbon and nutrients.” Tunnelling, excavating subsoils to the surface opens up the soil, greatly improving aeration and soil structure, allowing greater infiltration of fertilisers and urine. “Burial of nutrient-rich manure means nutrients go into the ground instead of running across the surface to our waterways. “We are getting more than 80 per cent reduction in the surface flow of waterway contaminants like sediments following dung beetle nesting activity. Improved soil structure and nutrient loading deep in the soil enables grass roots to grow down deep, which is great for improving drought tolerance. “We are finding earthworms that we introduced have increased fivefold and a greater depth they can occur at. This is nature’s solution to pasture management — the process was busted when we added livestock onto our farms with no beetles to transform the manure. “Many studies report dung beetle activity results in at least 70 per cent reduction in gut parasites.A fourseasons pack comprising seeding colonies of three to four different types of dung beetle is required for roughly 300 cows or 2,000 sheep, and beetle

Shearers compared to All Blacks

ADVERTORIAL

What’s up with turmeric? by John Arts

My motorcycle tour in India in a few years ago was a feast for my senses including, of course, my taste buds. Most curry recipes contain the brilliant yellow spice turmeric. It has been a mainstay of Indian Ayurvedic medicine where it is used for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and immune-supporting qualities. The active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin. I have many clients who have benefitted from curcumin often to calm tissue affected by inflammation. One client had a troublesome Baker’s cyst behind his knee. Taking my Curcumin product has greatly reduced swelling and discomfort. A study titled Curcumin: a new paradigm and therapeutic opportunity for the treatment of osteoarthritis (Henrotin, 2013) investigated the application of curcumin in osteoarthritis. The study concluded, “curcumin represents a new paradigm since it is not yet a recommended intervention in osteoarthritis but should be considered based on its safety and efficacy.” The study outlines the impact of curcumin on anti-inflammatory pathways, including inhibiting

inflammatory enzyme COX-2. This is the target of most anti-inflammatory drugs, and while effective, these come with a range of often side effects. I use a standardised extract of 95% curcumin extract and have created a proprietary blend to improve curcumin absorption into damaged joints and tissue. The normal daily dose of two capsules daily gives 1,000mg of this high potency extract. This is equivalent to about a tablespoon of raw turmeric. This is especially effective when combined with high potency grape seed extract. I use curcumin mostly for joint support and wherever tissue is affected by inflammation. Contact me for an email copy of my Anti-Inflammatory Nutrition Guide. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. For questions or advice contact John on 0800 423 559 or email john@abundant.co.nz. Join his all-new newsletter at abundant.co.nz.

New Zealand’s unique position of recognising shearing and woolhandling competitions as a sport is being cited in a bid to achieve similar status in Australia. The call was made ahead of the transTasman test matches during the threeday Australian national championships in Dubbo, NSW. The region’s mayor, Ben Shields, says it is one area in which Kiwis outdo the Aussies, with New Zealand shearers treated ‘like rock stars’, alongside such sports as rugby and the All Blacks. While Shearing Sports New Zealand has had official sport status for more than 25 years, Sports Shear Australia has still not got the nod from the Australian Sports Commission. The commission has almost 100 national sports organisations on its books, and more than half receive governmentsourced funding, although the focus is on Olympic and Commonwealth Games sports and medal targets. Sport New Zealand recognises about 70 sports, but Shearing Sports New Zealand is one of a small number not currently funded, although it has received funding in the past, mainly based around world championships. “These guys spend hours on end practising, working through the heat of the day. Shearing is such a demanding activity, which is why we would love to see it listed as a national sport,” said Mayor Shields.

New Zealand Shearing Magazine editor and Des Williams initiated shearing’s recognition in New Zealand, becoming the National Shearing and Woolhandling Committee’s first publicity officer in 1991, instigating the change to a more formal structure as Shearing Sports New Zealand. In January 1993 heading to Wellington gain acceptance from Chris Ineson, the CEO of what was then the New Zealand Sports Foundation. Shearing Sports New Zealand teams are currently funded only by sponsorship and through the sport, including support from the independently-run competitions throughout the country. The current squad of seven competed across the disciplines of machine shearing, blade shearing and woolhandling in Dubbo. The machine shearing team comprises Nathan Stratford, Paerata Abraham, Troy Pyper, Allan Oldfield, Tony Dobbs, and woolhandlers Pagan Karauria and Sheree Alabaster. Australia has held the upper hand in the machine shearing tests in recent years, including several wins at New Zealand leg the Golden Shears. The New Zealanders have dominated the woolhandling and blade shearing matches.

Christmas Preparation

Time to embrace Kiwi Christmas culture by Andy Bryenton

It’s now pretty well established that the celebrity of the Christmas season (a small child from Bethlehem, Israel) was not born in the middle of a northern winter. In fact, with shepherds on the hillsides, a climate suited to robes and sandals, and a trio of ‘wise guys’ popping into the al fresco accommodation to deliver presents, the nativity is looking more and more like a Kiwi Christmas. We’ve got a lot to be proud of when it comes to our Yuletide festivities. There’s another thing, of course. Old Yule, and the image of a bearded man in furs who epitomises the season with snow and a big dinner, actually refers to Odin the old Norse god (and dad of Marvel’s blondest Avenger). One of his names was Jolnir, the ‘Yule Father’ or Langbardr ‘old long beard’. The real Saint Nicholas? He lived among pirates and sailors in Turkey, rather than carving the turkey. So, another Christmas icon who would be up for some beach cricket and a bit of a barbecue (also invented by pirates). We’ve lived in the shadows of frosted pine trees (a German tradition) and dancing snowmen for too long.

It’s time to admit it to ourselves; a New Zealand Christmas is just better. A long, leisurely lunch sizzling over the charcoal. The best excuse ever to have a cold beer with uncles, cousins and friends and discuss the cricket. Pohutukawas overhead and the option of a quick swim, half an hour after pudding, of course. The kids can play with their new presents outdoors, which is a blessing for those that come with repetitive whooping and exploding sound effects (or for parents foolish enough to have bought this year’s hot item, the Baby Shark singing soft toy). Right after Christmas, our northern relatives have to head back to grim, icy workplaces in the middle of winter. We get a couple of weeks to go fishing and finish off the leftovers. So here’s an idea. Let’s go all out with the Kiwi trappings of Christmas at this time of year. Santa in board shorts. Festive pina coladas. Carving

The best under the tree by Andy Bryenton

When those sleigh bells are jingling, it’s time to consider how to one-up Santa and source the best gifts for your own friends and family. Here are the hottest picks for 2019, alongside some ideas that are better than the mainstream! For him — The hottest gift for the grown-up man this year may very well be a kind of cologne or a very expensive hot sauce. The hype for both Tobacco Vanille Cologne and Oprah’s pick, Truff white truffle chilli sauce, is astounding. However, the facts are that the man in your life would rather have something practical. That is to say, a fishing drone from Splash Drones, which can shoot HD video or harvest a fresh dinner from the ocean. That, or for gamer dads, the latest Call of Duty: Modern Warfare on Playstation or Xbox. Oh, and don’t forget the DraftPour beer tap, which makes any can or bottle into pub-fresh beer on tap. Check it out on Amazon. For her — The mass vote is all for meditation and mindfulness colouringin books, cashmere clothing and the latest Apple ear-buds for crisp wireless music and sound. Moreover, there’s a better way to get awesome quality sound while looking good in summer

— Bose sunglasses. Google these cool frames with a classic look and integrated wireless speakers by one of the world’s leaders in audio. For the online addict, check out the remix of the classic Polaroid instant camera, which has been developed in accompaniment with Instagram, or help her relax with a heating and cooling massage pillow. There’s always diamonds, too, I am informed. For the kids — The hottest toys this year seem to continue the trend of disposable ‘surprises’; vast eggs filled with plastic trinkets and other tat — that are sure to be forgotten by 11am on Christmas morning. Forget the trends, then, and go for the gusto. For the boys, radio-controlled cars are back with a vengeance. Check out the range from Monster Jam and those old classics, Tamiya for some serious off-road firepower. Girls may not say they want the deluxe ultimate Arandelle castle set

Ready for the festive season Kiwi farms follow a calendar dictated by Mother Nature, not Father Christmas. So most veteran farmers know all too well the big squeeze that can occur in late November and early December, but it’s worth taking a look at what those trades professionals say when it comes to getting advice about having a happier holiday. “We’re here to help anytime, but our suppliers might not be.” That is a call to come in and stock up soon while it’s still possible, on those things, which may break or wear out during the festive season. “While many reputable plumbers, electricians, mechanics and machinery repair technicians carry lots of generic and common parts, obscure and offshore sourced pieces can be hard to obtain during the holidays. Part of this is shipping, and part is that other nations take different amounts of time off on different days than we do. Get in now to order replacement parts, and don’t leave an ‘iffy’ or ‘on the way out’ problem to blossom into a disaster when it’s tough to get suppliers on the phone. “Big projects are best left until the fresh new year, not rushed.” It is a common answer from those in the trades, who often see demands for seasonal must-haves like air-con coming in at the last second. It’s often hard to tell a determined customer that they have missed the boat, but it’s a fine thing to be first on the books for the new year. If it can wait until January, why rush things before Christmas? Take it easy, and good summer weather will still be

Taming and tidying the timber What does it take to be a professional arborist? As well as a head for heights and the ability to plan a strategic removal for problematic trees, it also takes a lot of time and dedication. Thankfully for Hawke’s Bay residents, there’s a name to call on who can make short work of problem plants. That name is James Fulford. The founder of Fulford Tree Co is proud to put his name to a business he’s devoted his considerable skills and more than five years of experience toward. It’s a growing business, too, and not just because James uses his qualification in arboriculture and an array of top-flight tools to tackle both overgrowth and undergrowth. A growing population in the Hawke’s Bay has seen a demand for his skills, which cover all aspects of tree work from hedge trimming right up to large-scale tree removals, piece by piece. You can include stump grinding, branch pruning, land clearance and weed matting installation on that list as well, rounding out a full roster of outdoor chores.

What links all these jobs together is precision. A neatly clipped hedge, a fully removed stump or the logistical challenge of safely removing a large tree all require attention to detail. James acknowledges that it’s just as important a ‘tool of the trade’ as the sharpest chainsaw or most powerful crane. Fulford Tree Co has comprehensive public liability cover as a backup on those big tasks. James knows he can rely on his qualified team to work as smart and sure as he does. From Napier, through to Hastings and all across the Hawke’s Bay, you’ll see Fulford Tree Co vehicles out on the road, attending to tree-related tasks big and small. If you have a ‘knotty’ problem or

The official game of Christmas Finally, after many decades of pre-eminence as the greatest game on sand, the official international rules of beach cricket have been set down for posterity. If you’re going to take part in the beautiful dance of tennis ball, driftwood and anything shaped like a bat this summer, take a look at the following ‘short version’. It’s the batsman v everybody else. There are no teams, as this will definitely degenerate into trouble, as both captains will want to have both the most athletic uncle (he could have been an All Black, but he’s got this

dodgy knee) and the dog on their team at once. A new batsman is chosen by the oldest player or spectator (usually gran) on the basis of everyone getting a turn. The bowler is whoever is best at bowling a tennis ball on firm sand unless they have been going ‘for ages’ and someone else wants a throw. Each over has five balls, as this is easy to tally in the sand. If you’re not out after four overs, you have to hand over the bat anyway, but you can add another 10 to your score. The stumps are best represented with driftwood or failing that, a chilly bin on end. It will give a resounding ‘thunk’ when struck. The batsman is obliged to run to the far end (the other chilly bin) whenever he touches the ball with the bat, even if the bowl was a weird underarm attempt from a random sixyear-old who turned up from the next barbecue over. Catchers under the age of 12 may use the ‘one bounce, one hand’ rule to put the batsman out. Anyone who takes a diving catch into the sea can add a free run to their batting total — 10 if they are fully clothed and 20 if they are a passing stranger,

caught up in the spirit of the game. A ball retrieved by someone else’s dog definitely counts as ‘out’. A good crack that lands in the shallows or on the front face of the dunes is a four. One that goes out into the breakers or up in the dunes and needs the dog (or small kids) sending after it is a six and out. Very competitive families can get great-uncle Steve to keep score on a bit of paper tucked into his Dan Brown novel. The winner of the

match is the person with the most runs when the barbecue is called, or the sun touches the horizon, adding one’s age from the run total if you’re under 10 and adding a point for each year above 70. Traditionally, they are awarded an extra big slice of pavlova, the one with the strawberry on it. Christmas at your place this year

Living in the countryside, and especially near the ocean, is a wonderful thing. When there’s time to get away for a spot of fishing or a dip in the surf, it’s right on your doorstep. The thing is, all of our relatives know it. That’s why this season is often one of unexpected drop-ins and long-lost reunions. Most of us are more than glad to see old mates and rellies coming down the driveway, especially if they observe the rules of BYO (B enough for the hosts as well as YO, naturally). However, anticipating a visit from the twice-removed and former flatmates can take the stress out of summer visits, even when your guests have packed an RV with more kids than you thought they had. The key to it all is entertaining outdoors. First up, use this as an excuse to rope the whole family into giving the yard a spring clean. Chop back overgrowth in the cool of the morning or early evening to avoid that sunripened feeling, and give concrete areas and patio furniture a spray down with the water blaster. It is also a good time to renew any rustproofing on metal outdoor equipment, including the barbecue trolley and surrounds. As cooking will formally move from within

the home to the outdoors for most of summer, make sure that the mighty grill is ready to roar, with clean gas jets and gratings. Moreover, make this the year to branch out into slow and low barbecue by grabbing a charcoal kettle and researching spicy southern-style recipes online. There can never be enough ice. A chest freezer filled with ice-cream containers of pre-made ice or a few bags from the local gas station ready for emergencies is a great idea. Long, cool drinks go down well in summer. In fact, why not freeze a few entire containers with a few biscuit treats in them for the dog? You’ll find he loves a cool iceblock as much as you, and it may prevent him sitting at your feet while you grill, eyes full of hope for a dropped steak. The final piece of the puzzle is banishing mosquitos, a battle that technology may have won for us. Check

Cleaning out woolsheds an easy job Clearing out the manure from under woolsheds has become easy work with Cleansweep Woolsheds. Mark Turton and his wife Megan, have been servicing the Tararua area for more than 30 years with their fencing business. Wanting to further assist their clients with farm maintenance four years ago, they introduced their new business Clean Sweep Woolsheds to the farming sector. After many years in development, the Clean Sweep machine was launched at the Mystery Creek Field Days under new innovations. Mark has invented this machine that goes under woolsheds and pulls out all the sheep manure. “I was giving a friend a hand to clean the manure out from under his woolshed using a big sucker machine. It was a wet day, and we were spending all our time unblocking the machine. I thought there must be something easier and quicker to use for the job, but there wasn’t.” Mark came up with a hydraulic-driven rotary hoe system, which goes under the shed by itself, digging along the pile line for up to 30 metres. When it is full, the machine is hauled out and emptied. “Underneath the shed is a horrible place to be for obvious reasons, but by using the Clean Sweep machine — you don’t have to be amongst it.”

The system is highly versatile, being used for any type of woolshed; it will even handle the lowest of sheds. The Clean Sweep machine is also ideal for cleaning the hard count out pens, and by using the Kanga and bucket set-up, they can clear away deposits on the under covered yards. Since the bulk of the work is being done automatically from outside the shed, it is not labour intensive, so it is fast and cost-effective. It is important for woolsheds to be clean, Mark says. “It creates a healthy space on many levels. The sheep have good airflow if penned overnight, and they dry faster. It also decreases wool staining, and most important of all, it reduces the ammonia smell, which the shearers will appreciate.” The end product is a great fertiliser that the client keeps. “Some people give it to the local school or club to sell, or they can spread it on their paddocks.” There is a huge variety of woolsheds around, so Mark visits the farm first and gives a no-obligation quote. If you have not cleaned out under your woolshed, count out pens or covered yards for a while, give Mark a call, and
