CALLING ALL LAND OWNERS
Members of the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council
At an extraordinary meeting of the regional council recently, a majority vote of councillors (five to three), passed a motion instructing the chief executive to give notice to the Electoral Officer, that a poll on the question of whether the region should have dedicated Maori constituencies is to be held at the next election on October 8 2022. That is to be preceded by robust engagement and consultation with the community. The motion is subject to any legislative change. The Minister of Local Government Nanaia Mahuta has signalled she will review part of the Local Electoral Act 2001. It allows for council decisions to create Maori seats being overturned by a binding referendum, which can be
forced by a petition of five per cent of registered voters. “Councillors all spoke of strong support for the voice of Maori at the council table, and a majority appear to support having dedicated Maori seats on the council,” says Hawke’s Bay Regional Council chief executive, James Palmer. “However, councillors expressed concern about the matter being decided by a poll of registered voters before adequate community engagement and consultation has taken place. “This decision has been to take the issue to the community in a less hurried manner to make sure they understand the importance of what the Maori seats mean for the regional council and how dedicated Maori representation would work in practice.”

Ahuwhenua winner announced

The winner of the inaugural Ahuwhenua Young Maori Grower Award is 26-year-old Maatutaera Akonga. Maatutaera is of Ngai Tahu, Ngati Porou, Ngati Kahungungu descent and is a senior leading hand at Llewellyn Horticulture based in Hastings. The announcement was made by Dr Charlotte Severne, the Maori trustee and chief executive of Te Tumu Paeroa at the Ahuwhenua Trophy Awards on Friday, November 20. The two other finalists in the competition were 24-year-old Brandon Cross and 25-year-old Finnisha Tuhiwai. Brandon works as a trainee orchard manager for the large kiwifruit orchard management and post-harvest company Seeka in Tauranga. Finnisha is packhouse manager for Maungatapere Berries located west of Whangarei in the rural township of Maungatapere. “I am still coming to terms with winning. It is a feeling you don’t get very often and makes you see that all the hard work that you put in over the years pays off,” says Maatutaera. “Winning won’t stop me; it will push me to work harder and better and to do more. The award is good for us as an industry to finally be in the limelight, especially with the hard year we have ahead. We don’t really know what is happening as an industry as a whole with the Recognised Seasonal Workers, so I think it is a good time for locals to
have a chance to get out there, enjoy the sun and come back to the land. “Brandon and Finnisha also did well to make the top three finalists. I hope we stay in touch and they keep moving forward in their careers and lives. I encourage anyone to have a go at horticulture as a career — it is well worth giving it a try.” Dr Severne presented Maatutaera with the winner’s trophy. All three finalists were presented with koru trophies and certificates by the sponsors of the award, Te Puni Kokiri, Primary ITO, Te Tumu Paeroa and Horticulture New Zealand. Award judge Aaron Hunt from Te Tumu, Paeroa says the standard of entrants in this, the inaugural competition for horticulture was very high and also reflects the number of young Maori who are making successful careers in horticulture. “Maori have always been involved in the horticulture sector, and in recent years they have been involved in significant new enterprises,” he says. As part of the judging process, the finalists attended an intensive twoday study tour designed to provide a range of insights, inspiration and experiences across the horticultural

vast array of exhibitors and speakers will be at the two-day East Coast Farming Expo set to run during Wednesday and Thursday, February 24–25 2021 at the Wairoa A&P Showgrounds. The gate price is $20 a person. “I am passionate about all things rural and believe rural people have a wide range of qualities and quite often underestimate their skill set,” says Sue. “I grew up just south of Hastings on a farm in the Ngatarawa triangle. Dad was a fat stock buyer for Borthwicks while running a trading operation. He also
grew lucerne and made hay and chaff for the thoroughbred industry. “My three brothers and I were all part of Dad’s labour force, although at times there was a little competition for who was to help Mum in the house. We often were out late at night, when the hay was the right moisture content, and it was the time to bale. I drove the Fergy tractor with the rake on behind, or the old TJ Bedford truck with the hay elevator, while my brothers stacked the back of the truck. “We had a great childhood growing up in the outdoors. for how my husband Fenton and I have raised our family. Two of my brothers and I rode ponies growing up, and we were part of Guides and Scouts, played musical instruments and had family holidays in the caravan. “Waikaremoana was our favourite place to holiday, especially camping with friends during summer. There was no temptation to head to the shops, and no technology. It was just good old-fashion fun exploring the amazing Te Urewera. The Wairoa A&P Society has been a huge part of our families’ community involvement. “The expo gives farmers the chance to meet face-to-face with industry leaders. Whether they are in the sheep and beef farming businesses, on extensive hill country or intensive flat operations — the expo is all about farming smarter. “I am also enjoying seeing agriwomen beginning to stand in their own sunshine. Historically, their role was to keep the household ticking along. Women are now more involved with onfarm decision-making and often work the books and crunch the numbers. “They also have more involvement in the running of the farm. It is often women dissecting analytics and identifying opportunities to farm smarter and have a better work-life balance for their families. “From the beginning, we have wanted to help farmers farm smarter, and I believe we are achieving this. Each year comes with its own rewards and
challenges, but we always hear great success stories. People are surprised at the variety of people they meet, the contacts they make, and the positive impact this has on them. That makes it all worth it. “The showground is the perfect venue for the expo as it is situated in the centre of our target audience area from Central Hawke’s Bay up the East Cape. The event is designed for farmers without the worry of children and townies. We completely focus on helping them see what is out there to help their operations. These events are critical to the future of the nation.” The expo promotes tech and innovation to the grass roots beef and sheep farmers with seminars presented by a high calibre of speakers. Survey drones, electric bikes and the latest smartphone farming apps are just some of the items on display. “The evening muster is extremely popular, and I enjoy the fact that anyone interested or involved in the land can come along. “The Rural Women New Zealand agri-women’s luncheon will have Elle Perriam speaking. Serial technology entrepreneur Melissa Clark-Reynolds is in the exciting line-up of keynote seminar speakers. The outdoor demonstrations include top dog trialist Lloyd Smith, from Pup Pen to Paddock. His training system is used by many shepherds and farmers. “I like that it is a great day off the farm, and there is plenty to see and

heir children Ashton, Jorden, Samuel, Suzannah, Peter, Daisy and Bob, enjoy helping out on the farm when required. “I grew up on my parents’ small dairy farm, and Rob grew up in Tokoroa township,” says Shiralee. “Rob’s grandfather had a rehab farm, so during the weekends and holidays, he would work on the farm. That was sold when he was 11 or 12, but it gave him a taste of what he wanted to do in life. “Rob is a practical person and began his farming career at 15 years old when he left school. I am one of seven children and always wanted to be a farmer’s wife. I left school and went courier driving and did relief milking as well. We met when he was 21 and decided to apply for jobs as a couple because back then people generally employed couples. That is how we got started.
“To the younger ladies married to farmers, I say if you love the country, there is nowhere better to raise your children and see your husband every day. Cherish those relationships. Farming is a great lifestyle and a fantastic way to raise a family. “There are times I don’t see Rob all day, as he gets busy, that happens, but I would say, marriage isn’t easy. I have to make an effort for him as well, he gets in with the children screaming, and I need him to help out too. You can’t be just badgering him about things. I find when I am chilled and relaxed, he is home more. “We forget we have to keep working on our relationships. Sometimes we only look good when we go into town. I make an effort to go out on the farm in a nice dress. It is the simple things. I think, sometimes as women, we forget that

men want to come home to be spoken to nicely after a hard day. We don’t always see what they have to deal with.” The couple only use bulls with the A2A2 gene and have a mixed herd as well. “A2 milk is sought-after for its health benefits,” says Rob. “The herd was DNA profiled five years ago to identify animals producing milk free from the A1 protein. Three-quarters of the herd is now A2A2. We rear 100 replacement heifers a year that are all tested and profiled. We identify animals carrying the A1 gene annually and these are sold. “There is no processor paying a premium or taking A2A2 milk in this part of the country. It is unlikely there ever will be. We are doing it because we are 50/50 sharemilkers and our herd is our asset. We want to do all we can to maximise its value. “About 270 of our animals, including young stock, are registered Holstein Friesians. We produce zero bobby calves, and the main milking herd is mated to Holstein Friesian and Hereford sires. “Rising two-year-old heifers are mated to fully DNA profiled, home-bred Holstein Friesian bulls. We are members of Holstein Friesian NZ and continually upskill to make our business more robust and attractive in a competitive job market.”
Rob is a trained artificial insemination technician with LIC, a seasonal position he has held for 22 years. Shiralee also delivers semen for the genetics company. “Prior to entering the NZ Dairy Industry Awards, we frequently wouldn’t even get a response when we applied for a 50/50 sharemilking job. Winning the title changed everything for us. People started calling us back when we applied for positions and often didn’t even want to look at our CV. The turnaround was amazing,” says Shiralee. The Seerdens are both self-described introverts, making them the most unlikely people to enter the awards. The rigorous judging process requires entrants to articulate and demonstrate how they run their business to a panel of experienced industry experts. “Standing up and speaking in front of people was the most terrifying thing either of us could ever imagine doing. The confidence the process has given us is amazing, and it really helped Rob improve his communication skills with staff. “The experience helped us focus on our goals and make informed decisions quicker. We have four staff, two on the 600-cow farm and two as part of our 50/50 sharemilking operation. That property is owned by John and Jocelyn Chrystal.

“We hope this year all our young stock will be able to be grazed on the farm. We wouldn’t be where we are today if we hadn’t entered the NZ Dairy Industry

A world-first tank cleaning system by Nick Whyte, Safe H20 East Coast Ltd
Safe H2O has developed a system whereby you can have your tanks and water cleaned at the same time with no need to make elaborate preparations for past cleaning processes. Don’t run your tanks low in anticipation of cleaning the sides (often resulting in a leaking tank thereafter) or engaging a certified contractor to remove debris at the bottom and then requiring a tanker for a refill. In what is a world-first, the Safe H2O Mobile Nano Filtration Unit has been specifically designed to service the rural householders. The revolutionary mobile trailer system removes sediment from the tank through external vacuum. It then filtrates the existing water through the unit, removing particles greater than 0.001 micron. It ensures bacteria is safely removed along with insecticide dust, iron, lead, pollens, viruses and many other contaminants. The unit is capable of processing up to 20,000 litres an hour making tank cleaning now affordable and providing safe water — fast.
DRIVE SAFE On Rural Roads
“The challenge with rural tanks is over time, sediment from ash, dust, sprays, chemicals, animal and bird droppings, dead rodents/birds and vegetative matter forms a dense layer on the base of the tank,” says Safe H20 director, Chad Meads. “This sediment is a breeding ground and food source for potentially harmful bacteria that can make users of the water supply extremely unwell. The very real danger is visitors or very young or old family members using the water and developing serious gastroenteritis. That sediment must be removed on a regular basis. “The challenge in getting this task done previously was to empty your tank, have someone climb inside to scrub it out, quite often damaging the inner walls of the tank in the process, and then having to pay to get more water

Fully mobile on a double axle trailer, complete with a nine kVa generator, a Programmable Logic Controller, which monitors the unit and measures pressure, flow, filter use and pH, the Safe H2O Mobile Nano Filtration Unit demonstrates the latest innovation and design.

Cartilage loss by John Arts
Osteoarthritis is all about loss of cartilage, subsequent inflammation and changes to bone and joint structure. The result is pain and loss of mobility. The ends of bones such as the femur are covered in tough, flexible articular cartilage. It may surprise that despite its tough appearance and texture, it is 80% water, which acts like a shock absorber. Cartilage is a combination of living cells, the matrix they produce, plus water. These specialised cells are called chondrocytes, and their job is to secrete and maintain cartilage. They repair small amounts of damage as it occurs. Osteoarthritis starts when chondrocyte cells die, causing the cartilage to breakdown. While there are several things that can damage chondrocytes, in most cases these are a combination of free radical damage from insufficient antioxidants and biochemical changes caused by trauma to the joint. While the triggers vary, the outcome is chondrocyte death and cartilage loss. It is then followed by unwanted inflammation in the joint capsule that further damages cartilage. Eventually, the bone itself becomes compromised,

and the net result is more pain and restricted mobility. Nutritional therapy can help, especially in reducing inflammation, slowing the rate of cartilage loss and improving the function of existing cartilage. For example, therapeutic levels (800+ mg) of chondroitin can have significant effects on the health of chondrocytes and therefore, cartilage protection and repair. Glucosamine also helps maintain cartilage while curcumin from turmeric helps reduce inflammation and fluid accumulation. Images show erosion
Hawke’s Bay Regional Council satellite imagery shows hundreds of thousands of tonnes of sediment in some of the region’s major rivers, and 20 kilometres offshore following a recent storm.

The first satellite image shows the bay between Napier Port and Cape Kidnappers in October this year, and the other image was taken after the storm struck, on Wednesday, November 11. It shows sediment clogging up some of our major rivers, Tuatakuri, Ngaruroro and Clive, and being discharged from these rivers and out to sea. “The science team is still analysing water samples to measure how much sediment was carried during the flood, but estimate that it was hundreds of thousands of tonnes,” says HBRC group manager of integrated catchment Iain Maxwell. “These satellite images reveal a telling picture of the ripple effect set in motion when we experience a major event of this kind. The storm has dislodged large volumes of potentially productive soil from our vulnerable, eroding hillsides, and this has entered our rivers and gone as far as 20 kilometres offshore. “Sediment impacts rivers and the coast by reducing water clarity, removing habitats for small aquatic animals and the ability of fish to find prey. On the coast, it is problematic for algae that use sunlight for photosynthesis, and they struggle to survive, leading to a loss of habitat.” Regional council modelling shows 252,000 hectares of Hawke’s Bay hill country is prone to erosion. “As our climate changes and storms

Federated Farmers say serious gaps in the agricultural contracting workforce have consequences such as animal feed shortages and risks to getting arable crops in next summer. “After favourable rain in many parts of the North Island in the last month, there is a big emphasis on making grass silage to help cope if predicted droughts take hold,” says Federated Farmers employment spokesperson, Chris Lewis. “There is so much work out there and not nearly enough operators.” Federated Farmers is deeply concerned by a statement from Rural Contractors New Zealand that a lack of spaces in Managed Isolation Quarantine facilities. That is thwarting the governmentsanctioned flow of a limited number of foreign skilled agricultural machinery operators into the country. “Farmers applauded the government for its decision in September to allow in 210 of these operators, most of them from Ireland and the UK, even though twice that number were needed to meet seasonal demand. “We are really dismayed to learn only 58 have arrived to be either in MIQ or working, with 16 more with flights booked and holding MIQ vouchers. Another 61 still overseas cannot confirm places in MIQ facilities, and won’t arrive until mid-February — if then.” Federated Farmers reported recently that some South Island farmers were getting silage/baleage cut in wet conditions. It is out of desperation and
fear that if they didn’t make use of contractors when they were available, there would be no-one available later on. Others were working extremely long hours and pushing the boundaries of safe operation. Feds Dairy chair Wayne Langford said these sorts of decisions ultimately affected on-farm profitability, some of which are seen immediately and the rest later in the season when poorer quality feed is fed to animals. Arable chair Colin Hurst said traditionally the silage/baleage contracting workforce moved on to harvesting grain from mid-January. Operator delays or shortages could have a big impact. “Farming is often all about the weather; timeliness is important, and you seize your chances when the weather plays ball. Workforce gaps will just have a domino effect all over the place.” Chris Lewis acknowledged the government has all sorts of competing demands to balance, not least finding security and health staff to run MIQ facilities. “With no international tourism, surely there is no shortage of hotel space. We can only ask that the authorities do their utmost to expand MIQ space and allocate vouchers according to the

Forestry scholarships received

Nga Karahipi Uru Rakau — Forestry Scholarship is supporting another eight aspiring New Zealanders to study and pursue careers in forestry, with its 2021 scholarship recipients. Now in its third year, the scholarships are increasing diversity in forestry sciences and engineering, with a strong focus on encouraging Maori and women to embark on forestry careers. “Maori and women represent only a small percentage of the forestry workforce. Te Uru Rakau endeavours to change that and make the forestry and wood processing sector more reflective of our communities,” says acting deputy director-general of Forestry New Zealand, Henry Weston. With the latest cohort, the scholarship programme has to date now supported 22 Maori and women to study forestry science/engineering at the University of Canterbury, providing $8,000 each year during the degrees’ fouryear duration. “Forestry science and engineering keeps New Zealand wood at the cutting edge of innovation and sought after by customers around the globe. The insights and experiences these recipients will bring as future forestry scientists and engineers will help us grow the forestry industry, ensuring science and technology underpin this thriving sector.
“We consider many factors in the selection of scholarship recipients, including students’ interest and commitment to a career in forestry, as well as their community involvement and leadership skills, are considered. “Receiving a scholarship is something recipients can take much pride in, as can their whanau and friends. Through their study and the summer internship programme, they will see a huge range of career paths aside from planting, pruning, and harvesting trees in forestry; a sector, key to our country’s economic wellbeing and more sustainable environmental outcomes. “I am looking forward to seeing the big things these scholarship recipients achieve throughout their studies and forestry careers.” The recipients of the 2021 forestry scholarships are Anaru Walker from Christchurch, Warkworth’s Angus Syminton, Chloe Small from Methven, Wellingtonian Heather Harper, Katikati’s Lana Parker-Hay, Maude Rogers from Wanaka, and Steven Doherty and Tessa McCarthy both from Rotorua. Scholarship applicants must be studying towards a Bachelor of Forestry

Science or Bachelor of Engineering with Honours, majoring in forestry engineering at the University of Canterbury. They must be eligible to enrol in either a Bachelor of Forestry Science or Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in forestry engineering. They need to be of Maori descent or identify as female and either a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident.
Recipients are also given the opportunity to earn while they learn, with annual paid summer forestry internships coordinated by Te Uru Rakau.
