Hawke’s Bay Regional Council chair, Rex Graham, says every effort was being made to engage the people of Hawke’s Bay and to make it easy for them to have their say. “Napier Port is at a tipping point. It requires $320–$350 million of investment over the next decade for it to continue to support our economy, including $142 million for a new wharf, which is needed in 2022,” says Mr Graham. “The council believes floating up to 49 per cent of the port on the local stock exchange is in the best interests of the port, our Rex Graham, Hawke’s Bay Regional Council chair economy and ratepayers. Open for review Hawke’s Bay Regional Council is seeking submissions on its proposed representation arrangements ahead of the 2019 elections. “The review happens every six years, as an opportunity for councillors to make any changes to the constituencies or numbers of councillors to ensure they are able to serve their communities well,” says HBRC’s electoral officer, Leeanne Hooper. “The council has reviewed its arrangements and is proposing to retain the current arrangements of nine councillors and five constituencies, with only two changes to boundary arrangements. They want to hear from the public now, on whether they have got the right approach.” Council has resolved to keep the Regional Council constituencies of Central Hawke’s Bay, Napier and Wairoa as they currently are, matching the city and district council areas. The two minor boundary changes proposed are between the Hastings and Ngaruroro constituencies. These are to allow for residential development and population changes in the Iona and Te Mata Hills areas and to align with Hastings District Council ward boundaries. As the council review has proposed no increase in councillor numbers — council will need to apply to the Local Government Commission to retain four constituencies as ‘communities of interest’.

The straw alternative by Ann van Engelen

Pat Mawson and Nils Rock build houses with straw bales creating homes for people that are naturally user-friendly, aesthetically pleasing and kind to the environment.

“W

e are interested in alternative building methods because we enjoy working with different systems,” says Pat. “Originally I saw a rammed earth house and was drawn to the aesthetics of the natural materials but settled on using straw because of the insulation qualities. Straw bale houses are generally warmer and despite common perceptions perform very well in fires and earthquakes. The bales are tightlypacked so don’t burn well and once they are plastered the air can’t get in to burn, and they are very strong.” Pat says you can build with any type of straw but not hay because straw

is mostly cellulose and much more durable. Hay is higher in sugars and very attractive to animals and microbes. “You need to experience a straw home to appreciate the difference. The homes feel alive and have a very welcoming warmth about them. We enjoy being able to create with non-toxic materials and specialising in the clay plasters we use, which regulate humidity, both absorbing and releasing moisture vapour, making for a comfortable air quality. They have great acoustics, are energy efficient and easier to heat than a conventional home. “You don’t have flat, straight sterile walls and you get movement and light plays across them.” It can take six months to two years to build a house

Straw bale creates a warm feel to a house and gives the opportunity to add historic pieces into the build

this way depending on the design. We have experimented with little bits and pieces like chook houses, and we hold teaching days and school visits to show people how it is done. “We are a small business and keep busy through word of mouth, which is nice — people who come to us usually know what they want. “There is a lot of misconceptions about straw builds, but they can be built anywhere and are fine in high rainfall climates as long as they are well designed.” It is a common tradition when it is time to stack the bales for the clients to get friends and family involved as part of the fun. “Most people enjoy having the weekend with us to help put the bales up. They really enjoy seeing how it all works and being involved hands-on.”

Nils and Pat have built seven houses so far — with some being substantial projects. “We still need the same permits from council and from our experience we have not had any consent issues, the Hastings council have been very constructive to work with. These houses are not cheaper to build because straw bale is just the walls and the houses are generally high-quality. There is a large labour component for professional builders and cost is on par with a conventional high-quality house with good insulation and joinery. “There is an opportunity for owners to build using their own labour input for financial savings and we have directed people to courses so they can learn to do the work themselves and helped them to get started. You can add glass bottles and historic things into the

Bale houses have good acoustics, don’t have to have straight walls, are energy efficient and easy to heat

walls and be as artistic and creative or conventional as you like. People have curved walls or traditional clean straight ones — they can be like hobbit homes or spic, span and modern, there is a lot of flexibility. We have been doing it now for about ten years, and it is very fulfilling creating these masterpieces.” Pat says the houses can last for centuries if they are lived in and properly maintained. “They have been around since the 1800s in Nebraska, and there are plenty of old buildings in Europe built with straw. They have been pulling it out, and it hasn’t broken down after all this

time — it keeps its quality as long as it stays dry. The straw sits well with old timbers, and they often use hardwood beams and handcrafted doors, stained white ceiling boards, iron wagon wheels, recycled timber floors from the old farm and pieces of local or family history such as the original farmhouse kitchen cupboards and wood stoves for rustic charm. “They tend to be a country house built by people who want something a little different although there are a few in the cities. Every house is uniquely handcrafted, making it more interesting as a builder to work with.”

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

A thirst for knowledge by Ayla Miller

When 2018 New Zealand Dairy Manager of the Year Gerard Boerjan moved across the world to pursue a career in dairy farming, he soon realised he would have to be proactive when it came to learning the necessary skills to be successful in this new environment.

G

erard, 50, has successfully farmed in Portugal and Brazil and is currently farm manager for Trevor Hamilton on his 553 hectare Takapau property. He also won the DairyNZ Employee Engagement and the Westpac Financial Management and Planning merit awards. Coming from a farming background in the Netherlands, Gerard felt comfortable moving into the industry, and had a job offer in Portugal before he had even finished school. He took

the job and stayed there for five years before moving to New Zealand with his partner Marlene. “I came to New Zealand after I finished in Portugal and started dairy farming in Te Awamutu. There was a big difference in farming styles especially with the reliance on pasture. I knew I really had to upskill my pasture management knowledge, which I did through discussion groups. I got a lot of value out of those discussion groups in the early days.”

Farming is a family affair for the Boerjans: Pictured from left is Jeroen, 13, Claudia, 10, Marlene, Gerard and Oliver, 15 Gerard Boerjan manages a 553 hectare property in Takapau and enjoys the challenges and variation his work brings him

Following this, Gerard shifted to Brazil for three years and another completely different farming experience. There he started up a dairy farm for a group of New Zealanders before returning to New Zealand and settling in Hawke’s Bay in 2012 on the farm he is currently managing. “Gerard is a stand-alone manager, and he doesn’t just assume things are getting done, he closely monitors things. He regularly reviews the information he gets against on-farm targets,” said Dairy Industry Awards judge, Dave Hutchison

from Westpac. “He really cares about his staff, he cares about the people, the environment, his cows, what he grows and how he grows it, but he also understands very clearly that it’s a business he is running, and he showed us that.” The judges said Gerard is an excellent example of understated confidence. “He’s experienced, yet humble. He has a great team approach, even texting his staff to ensure they get home safely every night.” Gerard says he was very happy when he learnt he had won the

title. “It’s nice to get recognition for all the effort that’s been put in over the years, and I was really stoked.” For any other farmers starting out or learning new methods in a new place, he recommends making every day count. There’s a lot of knowledge out there, and

you just need to keep asking the right questions. You have to be willing to put in the hard work, and you have to go get the knowledge and information. For people who are willing to put in the effort, the opportunities and rewards are definitely there.”

The romance continues BY ANN VAN ENGELEN

The success of Walter and Maria Van Lier’s flower growing adventure began in 1951 when they arrived from Holland to begin a new life.

T

he couple originally started growing potatoes in 1952 and have become nationwide rose suppliers known as Van Lier Nurseries where the family produce some of New Zealand’s finest rose blooms. “Continuing in the traditions Walter and Maria, fondly called Opa and Oma, their son Theo and grandson Harry now run the company that annually grows more than 1.6 million rose stems,” says business manager Joanne Hurley. “Carnations were the first cut flower, Opa grew and in 1974 he saw the romantic necessity for long stem roses, and by the 1980s they were

the main component of the business. VLN has 14,000sqm of glasshouse planted with more than 35 rose varieties. They also produce other cut flowers — Alstroemeria, Gypsophilia, Limonium, Hellebores and Parzival. “Recently we built a 2,000sqm glass house and shed for propagation. We propagate plants for ourselves and other cut flower growers and are the sole provider of carnation cuttings in New Zealand. They also grow the houseplant Zanzibar Gem and would like to introduce others to the range. A gas-fueled boiler heats water, which is pumped through the pipes to keep the

glasshouse heated. Fifteen micro and macronutrients are delivered through the irrigation system to produce topquality flowers. Summer roses are harvested three times daily during peak harvest to ensure that the flowers are consistently picked at the right stage of opening. Several quality checks are made for straightness and strength, damage, pests or disease and head tightness. “When I first joined VLN 11 years ago the immediate challenge was to improve the company’s profitability. In recent years we have been able to reinvest back into the business and take advantage of new technologies to improve productivity. It is rewarding to see the family enjoy the fruit of their labour,” says Joanne. “To keep up to date we look at the trends and discuss with our florists what they require annually.” The Van Lier staff travel to growing trials in Europe to choose their rose varieties. “Bringing new stock into New Zealand is a lengthy and costly process. We apply for permits and go through at least a six-month quarantine process, rigorous testing and cull of the varieties that were initially imported.” Fifty plants of each selected variety are then made and planted in the trial area. “We hold open days showcasing these and send samples to florists for their feedback. Once a variety is chosen as a production plant, it takes 12–18 months for it to mature to full production. Our flowers have not

travelled across the world and are grown with minimum pesticides. “We have the largest range of cut rose varieties in the country including the exclusive David Austin Roses — he is a world-famous English rose grower. “David wanted to create a cut cultivated rose and nearly bankrupt himself in his achievement. The Patience has a dense centre that is fragrant and is popular as a wedding flower. Another favourite rose is Avalanche, from a Dutch breeder and Kim Kardashian used them at her wedding.” Cut cultivation roses have different characteristics to outdoor rose bushes and breeders invest heavily in developing new varieties. “They don't have the fragrance because the focus is about productivity and stem quantity. Florists need a long vase life, good stem length and flower shape, and few thorns — all important factors when producing floral art designs and wedding bouquets.” Joanne says rose growing is in the blood and Harry will tell you he is a ‘rose grower’ not just a business owner. “Harry loved completing his internship in Europe and bringing the innovations back here. He is proud of his rose growing abilities. “It is fulfilling and gratifying to provide top quality flowers to people. My favourite is Peach Avalanche — I love the colour and the fact it has no thorns — its vase life is up to three weeks, and it holds its bloom. “This is a typical small family business carrying on a passion with a green thumb. It is a big achievement

Matt inspects and picks rose blooms ready to be sent for processing to remain sustainable over three generations particularly given that the core product is a discretionary spend — you don’t have to have cut flowers to stay alive. They definitely bring a lot of pleasure though. “Looking for ways to be innovative is a credit to Opa’s legacy, and Harry and Theo are able to pass on the generational success. Theo’s other son Steffan works in the business and was recently involved in setting the bench system in the new propagation house.

“Opa was still coming up to the nursery, and before he died in 2016, Theo would put Opa’s scooter into the covered trailer and Opa would inspect the stock. We had a problem with hollow stem once, and Opa knew immediately it was a copper deficiency. He certainly passed on his knowledge, and it is appreciated today and will be for generations to come.” The Van Liers sell their products to florists, other growers, and wholesalers throughout the country.

ADVERTORIAL

Some people who contact me have straightforward problems. I was speaking with someone recently who has moderate osteoarthritis (OA) in her knees. We put her on a programme that included some dietary recommendation, some helpful tips and two supplements. I have no doubt that within three months she will be more comfortable. Others have complex problems. A woman in her 60s contacted me early this year and had problems with OA in her hands, knees, hip and back with sciatica down one leg. She had restricted mobility and also was very tired. I created a comprehensive support programme for her to reduce inflammation throughout her body, to improve circulation and improve energy. It included an intensive supplement programme for the first three months. This programme included high doses of omega-3 fish oil to supplement her high omega-3 and low omega-6 diet. I then added my joint support programme. It is a little different than many as it is high in chondroitin sulphate (CS). Studies confirm the benefits of high doses of CS. I started her on 1,600mg of CS, with 1,600mg of glucosamine and 400mg of a high potency, rapid absorption curcumin (from turmeric) complex. We then added a potent multi-

antioxidant complex that included acai berry extract, grape seed extract (OPC), resveratrol and others. Magnesium can be particularly effective to help relax tissue around arthritic joints especially in the complex tissue around hips and backs. Within two months she noticed her thumbs were less painful and her mobility had improved. As a bonus, the antioxidant complex had stimulated her energy processes and was feeling much better in herself. After five months she was now able to cycle again. Her thumb joints were almost pain-free. Now she describes herself as largely pain-free, has much more energy and feels confident about the future. The body is simply miraculous. All I did was to give her body what it needed and then the time to heal. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. also encouraged B+LNZ to work collaboratively across the sector to ensure there wasn’t a duplication of effort.” While many endorsed the additional investment proposed by B+LNZ, noting the small percentage of overall animal sale value, others indicated that they were concerned about potential cost pressures for the sector too. “We’re aware that for some farmers their costs are increasing, and that there is uncertainty around the impacts of Mycoplasma bovis and what their share of the phased eradication cost will be,” says Mr Morrison. “In making this decision, we have considered farmer’s concerns carefully. Even though we had a clear mandate from the 2015 referendum to increase levies, we committed to coming back to farmers to ensure they backed the direction we were heading in. We have listened to the valuable feedback that farmers have given us and we will be working hard to ensure that the results of this additional investment will deliver benefits for our industry.” To implement the levy increase, B+LNZ will be gazetting the change in September, informing meat processing companies of the rise, and advertising the change to farmers over the coming weeks.

The additional levies will be invested in accelerating four key programmes: the international activation of the Taste Pure Nature origin brand and the Red Meat Story, helping the sector lift its environmental performance and reputation, telling the farmer story better, and strengthening B+LNZ’s capability to address biosecurity risks. “There was clear support for the levy proposal with almost 63 per cent of respondents backing an increase,” says Beef + Lamb New Zealand’s chairman, Andrew Morrison. “Almost two-thirds of respondents indicated support for the strategic direction of B+LNZ, which is an encouraging message from farmers.” Along with the indications of support for the levy proposal and the priority areas the additional investment would support, farmers also provided valuable feedback about B+LNZ more generally. “Farmers showed widespread support for the Taste Pure Nature origin brand and the organisation’s new environment strategy,” says Mr Morrison. “Farmers

Bouncing just right Supertramps Trampolines have been around for 40-odd years and are one of the only 100% New Zealand-made trampolines left in the country, with a reputation for being the longest lasting unit on the market. Supertramps Trampolines is part of Canvasland, a New Zealandowned and operated manufacturing company specialising in outdoor weather protection products. Circa 1990, Canvasland took licence of the Supertramps brand and bought Outdoor Living, a company that designed and manufactured the Superoctopus octagonal model at the time. The two companies were amalgamated, and Supertramps Trampolines was born. The manufacture of both the rectangle and octagonal models has remained in Levin ever since. It is integral to the brand to keep all manufacturing in New Zealand, supporting local businesses and maintaining quality control at its best. The structural integrity of a Supertramp Trampoline has always been at the forefront, they’re a family trampoline, and the frames are built to recognise that; using a 65 x 35 x 3.0 galvanised box section steel frame, manufactured to the highest level of Australian/ New Zealand standards: AS/NZS 1163:2016, leaving you with total confidence in your trampoline frame. Keeping manufacturing local allows us to

offer additional options like custom powder-coated frames and custom coloured safety pads. “Thirteen Christmas eves ago my husband and I put together our toddlers’ Supertramp,” says Michelle Richardson from Mt Maunganui. “While they slept we easily pieced it together. I think I was more excited than the kids. It was 25 years earlier that a Supertramp arrived in my childhood garden. I grew up on the trampoline, bouncing alone, with siblings, and really, the whole neighbourhood. Today we have three adolescents who have done the same. We are onto our second mat, but the frame is as solid as ever. I deliberately steered clear of a caged trampoline, and I’m glad. I think the spatial awareness my kids

learned at an early age has been improved by the freedom of a Supertramp. Two of my three children have competed in trampolining, but we all enjoy a bounce especially when friends are over. Honestly, the safety pads are great, and the games double when the sides are clear. “I find myself buying another Supertramp this year: to go in the garden at the beach bach. I couldn’t recommend this brand enough. They’re durable; they’re quiet, they’re great for young and old.“ Supertramps — 100% designed and manufactured right here in Levin, New Zealand and built to last a lifetime.

Planning a break With summer coming and the opportunity to take a break being upon many farmers, and whether on a budget or no expense spared, finding the perfect vacation spot is at times not as simple as it seems. A dream vacation needs to be well planned, and engaging a travel agent can help take a lot of stress out of your experience when deciding on the best location for your hard-earned break. There are many booking sites available on the internet, but for some people, this can be confusing, even for the most experienced traveller. A travel agent wants to make sure that you have a good trip, and they like to hear their clients had a great holiday and were able to relax, even if it is a local, national or international destination. The advantage of using a consultant is they are up to date on insurance information, good deals and places to go, as well as where to

Often travel consultants have been to various places to experience themselves what the destinations have to offer, so they can pass on this information to their clients. They also get special deals ‘exclusive’ to their company and if something goes wrong whilst you are away, they are just a phone call away to help you sort out any issues such as missed flights, missing luggage or extending your vacation. They can also, at times get you a better seat on an aeroplane, added amenities at hotels, room upgrades, event tickets and suggest or plan activities for you. Your time is valuable, and a consultant can match you with the vacation that you actually want, not the one that you saw on television. They have relationships with their suppliers, and this helps them be able to personalise many holidays, right down to suggesting types of rental cars to make your trip that much more fun such as a convertible or more family orientated vehicle if necessary. Whether you know

what you want or are unsure of where to go and what to do, call your local travel agency. They can organise the plan you have or help inspire you with destinations that are ideal for you and help define what it is you want to get out of a vacation — whether it is a fishing trip, a shopping holiday, surfing, or just to relax and explore somewhere new or return to an old favourite location. Travel agents want to help make your time off-farm memorable — they are here to help.

The mystery of PTO pumps

Power take-off pumps have been around for nearly as long as tractors. Early ones used belt drive systems to increase the impeller speed from the tractor output of 540rpms. Most pumps function best between 1,600rpm and 3,600rpm depending on design, so these variances often necessitated large differences in pulley size with accompanying problems in getting the power to the pump shaft. Also, the pump turned wrong way necessitating the pump being reversed, so that the suction end was away from the water source! Fortunately, several companies designed purpose-built units with integrated water-cooled gearbox such as the Ferrari F83 pictured. Customising of these Ferrari gearboxes can be done simply — allowing various input/impeller ratios. Ferrari also builds specific PTO pumps for effluent to take the much harsher environment of pumping dirty, abrasive liquids and include a

macerator as standard, and a chopper if required. Bigger is not always more beautiful. A large pump always uses more power than a correctly-specified pump. We often see medium pressure pumps being driven beyond their service speed in an attempt to produce the high pressure required. Irri-Max Ltd use specific graphs and tables to calculate which pump is correct for the job. Suction almost always needs to be larger than the inlet flange of the pump.

Think about your kids’ eyes and cheeks as they suck on a thick shake with a small straw. Yep, the pump is similar. At worst, a situation called cavitation occurs, which is expensive in repairs. Tractor check — does it have the power to run the pump as required? Have the radiator, fan belt, fuel filters, etc been serviced recently? Have you got an engine control panel on it? Brilliant for peace of mind and reliability. Easy MOP panels also include a digital

timer, electric throttle and GSM (extra) to monitor by phone. Use a basic tractor for power, as it is generally more durable than electric and doesn’t mind being wet while portable, higher pressure is available on single impeller with no winter line charges for power. Against this, it does tie up the tractor, which should have a protection panel and also doesn’t suit a stop-start operation while needing the driveshaft correctly guarded and maintained.

Animal welfare stronger Regulations to strengthen the nation’s animal welfare system came into effect on Monday, October 1 and farmers need to ensure they are aware of the new regulations, which cover on-farm practices and transporting livestock. “Two-thirds of us have pets, and we love them. Further, New Zealand’s economy relies on our social licence to produce the finest food and fibre — and it can take one case of poor animal welfare to harm this,” said Minister of Agriculture, Damien O’Connor. “These regulations have been developed over the past three years, in consultation with industry and advocacy groups, and target lower-end offending. While most people care for their animals and are already doing it right, the regulations make it easier to take action against animal mistreatment and target specific behaviours that need to change. “Animal Welfare Inspectors from MPI and SPCA can now issue fines for certain actions, such as allowing dogs in cars to get heat stressed, or failing to provide tethered goats with access to water and shelter. Some of the regulations are infringement offences, with a set fine, while others are prosecutable offences, which could result in a larger fine and criminal conviction.” Farmers and lifestyle block owners need to ensure they, and their staff, are up to date with the rules and regulation changes concerning the welfare of animals in their care to avoid prosecution. “Most of the regulations reflect existing farm practices but have a few new requirements. Many of the transport-related regulations apply to farmers selecting lame, sick or injured stock, so farmers should check they are doing it right or face a $500 fine,” said Mr O’Connor. “Farmers and transporters can download the ‘Fit for Transport’ app or go

Meet the royal family

BATTERY ADDITIVE by Andy Bryenton

Back in 1982, farming was a simpler trade in many ways. Nevertheless, the same challenges were on the mind of rural workers. The trusty two-wheeled farm bike had definitely replaced the horse, but when it came to lugging tools and equipment to far-flung quarters of the farm, something new was needed.

Battery Revitalizer & Conditioner A lot of people in our Recharge Conditioning Program are getting 8 to 10 years out of their batteries. Just dose them when you buy them, treat them every two years and give them an overnight charge twice a year between treatments and eliminate the sulphation problem, A car battery can be treated for around $5. Yes you can treat sealed batteries, simply drill into each cell, top up with water, treat, charge and reseal with silicone, sika-flex or a plastic bung.

It was christened the LT125, and it started a revolution. Today, after 35 years, Suzuki still manufacture some of the hardiest quads in the business, with the hardearned name ‘king quad’ blazoned on the side. From the bulletproof and largely original layout of the LT-F300F through to the top-of-the-tree LT-A750XP, all share a common heritage and have been developed over those three decades using the same process which gave rise to the ‘granddaddy’, the original LT125. Suzuki listens to their customers, and make improvements to suit. That’s why, while the LT-A750XP — with its big bore, single overhead cam 722cc engine and power steering — seems a far cry from the simple original, it’s still designed primarily for farm work. It’s been designed to be easy to maintain, with a single cylinder liquid

cooled engine placed low in the frame for stability. Designed with plenty of low-down torque, and despite adopting the latest CVT transmission, it still offers high and low ratios and engine braking for safety and security when the going gets rough. Electronic fuel injection has increased both power and fuel economy, while power steering has made it easier to handle and more comfortable to command during those

long days of work. Underneath it all — and underpinning the entire Suzuki quad family — is the sense that these machines were not made for racing, recreation or style. From day one, all the way back in the 1980s, these quads have been tuned up for the Kiwi farm. It’s a singular purpose — but then again, farming here is like nowhere else on earth, and it pays to have the right tool for the job.

WHEELS

19

Taking it to a higher level by Andy Bryenton

The competition in the crossover and micro SUV section of the market is nothing short of intense, but elevate yourself into the upper echelons of size and luxury, and there are less of a bewildering array of options. Putting aside hyper-luxury name tags like Bentley and Lamborghini, both of whom now cater to the sports utility trend, a large, comfortable family orientated machine with plenty of space and four-wheel drive might seem to still mean going European. Certainly, upscale Japanese marque Lexus has their LX on offer, but there’s also something available for half the price, which challenges you to find the need for spending that extra large sum of cash. It’s Mazda’s top of the range Takami CX-9, and it not only looks different from the bulk of the SUV crop, it’s also got a few neat tricks and design flourishes up its sleeve. Take for example the interior, with the obligatory seven seats to accommodate a large family or undertake the school run. The first two rows come with built-in heating, and the whole cabin space is accented with nappa leather, rosewood and brushed aluminium. Yet everything still folds away when it’s time to move heavy cargo. It’s the same story with the engine — there’s no massive V8 under the hood or even a turbo diesel. Instead, Mazda has deployed their extremely efficient, fuel-saving Skyactiv technology to coax 227hp and 430Nm of torque from a 2.5 litre four-cylinder. The use of light construction materials — we have no doubt that Mazda has learned a lot about lightweight

construction from years of tuning MX5s — means that this engine is easily up to the challenge of powering a sevenseater of this size. The six-speed transmission comes with the option for manual control, but

letting it do its thing in concert with Mazda’s i-Activ four-wheel drive system is simply easier and another weight off your mind. The word ‘Takami’ means ‘an elevated place’ in Japanese, with the added

connotation of that elevated place being one of nobility as well as of vantage. It’s a clever, double-edged meaning for a clever, multi-role machine — one which provides comfort and luxury in balance with practicality.
