The SPATnz Primar y Growth Partnership programme won the Innovation in Agribusiness and Environment category whilst the Omega Lamb Project took out the Innovation Award in the Innovation in Food and Beverage category. The Omega Lamb Project was also Highly Commended in the Innovation Excellence in Research category. “The wins are testament to the substantial investment in innovation by the programme partners,” says Justine Gilliland, Ministry for Primary Industries director Investment Programmes. “The Innovation Awards are fitting recognition of the significant amount of time, expertise, effort and money invested into SPATnz and The Omega Lamb Project to date. “We are very proud of SPATnz’s and The Omega Lamb Project’s achievements and excited at what they will mean for our seafood and red meat industries in the future. “These programmes are developing value-added products for consumers, delivering returns for our seafood and red meat industries, helping to lift environmental knowledge, practices and tools, and could be worth hundreds of millions of dollars to New Zealand’s economy.” SPATnz, a collaboration between MPI and Sanford, is tackling the ageold challenge of a reliance on growing Greenshell mussels from wild mussel spat washed up on 90 Mile Beach or caught on lines in Golden Bay. “SPATnz is well on the way to breeding Greenshell mussels in captivity at commercial scale with the characteristics demanded by consumers, as well as providing a consistent supply of spat. This will literally transform our Greenshell mussel industry,” says Ms Gilliland. The Omega Lamb Project is a collaboration between MPI, food company Alliance Group and a group of innovative farmers known as Headwaters. It is targeting premium markets with a new type of lamb with higher levels of polyunsaturated (good) fats and Omega-3 fatty acids.

Justine Gilliland, Ministry for Primary Industries director Investment Programmes

“The Omega Lamb Project is taking a new approach to naturally breeding, raising, processing and marketing premium New Zealand lamb. It is producing healthier, more resilient sheep, along with healthy, tasty, and succulent meat.” The first product from the programme, TE MANA LAMB, was launched in New Zealand and Hong Kong premium restaurants this year. Interest in this product is high, and it is receiving glowing reviews from leading chefs and food critics. “As these wins at the Innovation Awards show, SPATnz and The Omega Lamb Project are adding significant value to our primary industries, and pushing the envelope of what’s possible. This is at the heart of the Primary Growth Partnership.” The Primary Growth Partnership is MPI’s flagship investment programme. It invests in large innovation programmes that progress opportunities or tackle challenges facing New Zealand’s primary industries. It currently involves around $759 million of committed investment and more than 60 companies. PGP programmes are independently estimated to add $6.4 billion to New Zealand’s GDP from 2025. New Zealanders have always used wood for our one and two storey homes. But now, architects can specify modern timber fabrication to previously impossible heights. Cross Laminated Timber (super plywood) can make equally strong construction as other traditional high-rise materials.

Olive Grove and Orchard Equipment

Engineered wood is also lighter, quicker and quieter to build with, flexible in quakes, renewable, locally grown, fire resistant and locks up surplus atmospheric carbon. All we need now is for our government to recognise these qualities with a wood-encouragment construction policy.

Conference will mark 20 years

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES  October 2017

Dairy Women’s Network’s upcoming conference will celebrate the primary reason the Network was established in 1998 — to develop and educate women to add value to the business of dairy and bring women in the dairy industry together. Registrations are now open for DWN18 — ‘Our Land, Our People’ which takes place March 22-23 at the Energy Events Centre in Rotorua, and anyone working in the dairy industry is being encouraged to attend — women, men, rural professionals, all farm workers, and organisations that support the industry. “The conference will focus on the two key elements at the heart of the dairy industry, land and people, and celebrate the Network’s grass roots community and ability to bring people together,” says DWN ceo Zelda de Villiers. “It is very clear to us why our members are drawn to farming — they are proud to be part of a close-knit, supportive community, it is a great lifestyle for their families, and they enjoy working in the outdoors and with animals.” The conference will host three motivational speakers, including TEDx speaker Cam Calkoen, more than 30 exhibition stands, and nine practical workshops covering topics including finance, animal health, sustainability, and wellness. “Next year’s delegates will walk away having built knowledge and gained new skills, and feel inspired and motivated for

the year ahead,” says Jodie Goudswaard conference committee chair. “We want to continue to offer workshops that are relevant and timely to what is happening in the industry. We have put more of a practical spin on this conference because we want everyone to come away with solutions and plans to put in place once they get home, and we are offering more workshops and learning options than we have before.” A new addition to the programme is the pre-conference farm tour, where attendees can visit farms in the area to see new farming technology in action. Founding general manager Lynda Clark has seen her fair share of conferences and says over the years they have evolved to meet the changing needs of DWN’s members. “Technical workshops addressing the key areas women are involved in on-farm, and ones focussed on management and leadership are all topics which continue to be of interest to women in the dairy industry. “Now, we are also seeing full rooms for workshops in health and safety, sustainability, and ones that cover education on complex environmental

BY ANN MORGAN Taiamai Corker and his family have lived for seven years as part of a team establishing the Kotare Village, a village based on the Community Land Trust Model and on permaculture principles near Wairoa.

aiamai and his wife Franzi have two children, Elanor and Frieda and a baby on the way. Franzi came from Germany for a working holiday to follow the Lord of the Rings and Taiamai says she found him a week after arriving. “We lease 55 hectares of land off the Community Land Trust, and we breed a variety of different types of animals and birds,” says Taiamai. The land has 25ha in river flat and 30ha rough, steep hill country with regenerating kanuka and other plants. Taiamai and Franzi have a purebred herd of Dexter cattle, Wiltshire horn sheep and heritage poultry. “We began here with Jersey cows to provide milk for our

Large Black pigs and heritage poultry, however we are shifting to Jersey/ Dexter crosses, using the wonderful genetics of our Dexters to encourage hardiness. They have a super ability to convert rough pasture, especially on the management-intensive grazing system we use. “Wiltshire’s have big horns and shed their wool which makes them very easy to manage. We have Chinese Weeder geese, they are a beautiful bird and were originally used in the market gardens in China. We use them in our forest gardens to keep the grass down and we eat the meat. “We have Golden Legbar chickens — when their eggs hatch the males and

females are different colours. They were bred around the Second World War and are a cross of the heritage breeds Brown Leghorn and Plymouth Barred Rock — they have been a stable breed for about 70 years and are excellent layers with a good sized breast for eating.” Taiamai’s parents started breeding Dexter cattle some 30 years ago in Kaiwaka — Northland. “They were the second Dexter breeders in the country. The cattle are quite small and have a better constitution than the more industrialised breeds, converting pasture to high quality creamy milk and meat very efficiently. They are lighter on the soil so there is less pugging and good stocking rates. “They originate from Ireland and were dual purpose for milk and meat. They are

good birthers but some cattle no longer have a good udder or milk production so we are working to bring their original genetics back. The bull I have is from semen imported from Britain from an excellent milking line. “The meat is fantastic and I am also a butcher so we are setting up a home kill at the village to service the local area — Village Home Kill.” Taiamai says rare breed pigs do a lot better outside than their industrial cousins. “They are hardier and thicker skinned and are much more suited to being truly free range. I purchased my pigs from Longbush Free Range Pork in Carterton and I feed them whole milk and grass and am concentrating on the breeding. “They are black with big floppy ears that

Taiamai believes because rare breeds of pig are hardier and thicker skinned than their industrial cousins they are more suited to being truly free range

cover their face and are easy birthing. The two sows I have are four years old and their first two litters had 10-11 piglets each and neither lost any. “We have a forage paddock which is planted with heritage cider apples, walnuts, oaks and many other species for feeding pigs and poultry. The pigs I want to sell as breeders are running around there getting fat. The family have Muscovy ducks which they use for hatching chicken eggs. “They are like incubators — we let one or two sit on duck eggs and the rest will sit on the Golden Legbar. We raise Muscovies for meat as well because they do well on grass and they live out on the farm amongst the cows and pigs. Grain is expensive and we try to feed our animals from our own regenerative

resources. I can easily not feed them corn at all but the chooks need a bit. “I don’t specifically register organic because there is a lot more to growing good healthy food rather than being just organic. It is about using good genetics and growing healthy soil producing a quality product — there is a difference. “We left the family property in Kaiwaka nine years ago. My father and I were born there. His parents bought the farm after the war. We created the Koanga Institute, a Charitable trust saving our NZ heritage food plants and sold heritage seeds and fruit trees We have since started the Koanga Institute here and are still producing heritage seeds, trees and presenting workshops. We love it here in Hawke’s Bay, it is a great place to live.”

The miniature BY ANN MORGAN Mini Ha Ha Horse Haven is a rescue and rehabilitation centre run by Jennifer and Lindsay Heperi for mini horses from across New Zealand, specialising in rehabilitating laminitis and grass-affected miniature horses.

“W

e care for minis, Shetlands and small ponies. We have two donkeys at present amongst our family of 21 fur kids,” says Jen. “We came about creating The Haven after being asked to help some wee minis that needed care. The owners didn’t realise that they are different to big horses and we learnt about laminitis when we took in a rescue mare with a one-day-old foal and it was a big learning curve. Jenny Patterson from Calm Healthy Horses is Jen’s mentor. “Jenny has taught me so much and supports us with her amazing nutritional products. We also have regular volunteers including a home schooling family, and a photographer. Five years down the track we have a special

feeding programme. Some horses arrive and can hardly walk. Laminitis is like walking on crushed glass. “Laminitis has become a big problem across the country especially with fast growing rye and clover grass. These are high in potassium and sugars and so are muesli and commercial feeds. Many owners don’t add salt and this can contribute to a laminitis attack when lush green grass is added into the mix. This can make a horse become grass affected.” Jen says minis are often labelled little brats and are known for behavior problems due to being treated like large dogs. “This gives a completely wrong impression of how awesome they are. If you don’t understand about potassium and sugars in the grasses, and metabolic syndrome, you are quietly killing them.” ®

The horse haven is successfully run thanks to the help of volunteers such as Lyall Agnew

Horses get Equine Metabolic Syndrome if they are fed mostly grass. Warning signs include a big thick hard cresty neck and fat lump pads on their body. “Signs of a grass affected horse include twitching and not standing nicely when you put the bridle and gear on.” The couple built three ‘paradise tracks’, special yards with untreated post peelings so the animals walk on a soft surface, carpeted shelter huts, and they have macrocarpas to get shade. “We have rehabilitated more than 30 laminitics in three years. They get their feet soaked in epsom salts and are given magnetic pulse blanket treatments. The nutritional programme involves adding salt, Grazezy, S.O.S and Premium Minerals, and hay is soaked and has no clover or rye in it. “They start on the painkiller Bute, and then are weaned onto a natural pain remedy made specially by Jill Shires and it takes two to four days to see a slight improvement followed by more improvement each day. Chronically affected horses take up to five weeks to become comfortable. At two weeks a horse may lightly trot and by week four they can canter again. “We build up their trust and they have the run of seven acres and come and go as they please. “Rescuing and retraining is easy. Rehoming is difficult. We are extremely protective and ensure those we do let foster know exactly how to care for them. We recently became a charitable trust after five years of funding ourselves with help from many kind folk sponsoring us. Now we can apply for other sponsorship

Mini Ha Ha Horse Haven have rehabilitated more than 30 horses with laminitis in three years and grants.” The cost to care for one horse is more than $2,500 per year, or $20-25 a week to keep a mini in the lifestyle they deserve. “We have people nationwide rescuing horses from vulnerable situations. We are known in United States, United Kingdom and Australia with others wanting help. I work full time and we couldn’t achieve what we do without our amazing supporters. “Our volunteer photographer Tracey Agnew comes and puts every animal’s photograph on our facebook page every Sunday night so people can see how their horse is doing. “Mini horses should always be in pairs, not company for a big horse.

They need the dentist to file their teeth because they keep growing and the animal cannot eat. Feet need to be trimmed regularly and they need good quality hay. “We love giving horses that are in so much pain their life back. The biggest reward is seeing them run around the tracks, playing, galloping and chasing. I often cry because we saw them start out crippled. We don’t know what goes on behind the hidden hedges, but quality hay warms their bellies and good shelter keeps them out of the wind and rain. “They are what they eat so therefore they are what we feed them.” Check out ‘Mini Ha Ha Horse Haven’ on Facebook.

Other products have also been made available to help with skin. “Our skincare products are created from an array of high quality hand picked and hand pressed New Zealand native wild herbs, and the results are incredible,” says Jill. “They are A IN &

produced in small batches and are made totally by hand — from the picking to the mixing and packaging. “I often gardened without gloves and my hands had little infections from rose thorns and things so I needed a cream that was moisturising and healing. Tane Bradley is the manager of the business and ensures all products are made to the family’s expected high standard

person they met with. How long have you been a medical herbalist and would you be prepared to sit with Maori experts to work with herbs of our own country? “We all hear about Chinese herbs and the European knowledge of herbs but it was the knowledge of New Zealand medicinal herbs that we wanted to integrate. Our herbs come from a perfect bush environment — grown in beautiful quality soil. We found a lady that has worked with herbs all her life and she said she would be honoured to sit with Maori herbal experts to learn from.” Jill and Keith then decided their Agrisea gardeners might appreciate the hand cream as it is not filled with chemicals and is moisturising and healing. The family then created a healing salve that has also become very popular. “It is really outstanding and a lot of

people with eczema use it — it was like magic. In the early days I cleared a big bank of cleavers, and my forearms were absolutely on fire when I came in. I said to Keith I made a mistake and should have worn sleeves and gloves, so I used the salve on one arm as a test and it was an instant relief. “It has a mixture of herbs such as manuka, flax root, seaweed, rescue remedy and lavender. “It is one of those balms that is good for anything and clients have said it is magic for hemorrhoids as well. A friend who had bowel cancer used it out of desperation after chemotherapy and said it was like magic and helped her get relief where nothing else had worked.” Five years later Jill’s daughter asked her to create a face cream. “The rose

Seaweed and native herbs a re held in high esteem by the family and are the main ingredients for the products the company creates

and almond face cream was the very last product we made and is for our gardeners and Agrisea farmers’ wives — the men use it too. It is a truly nourishing face cream and is great if you are out in the elements. It has no chemicals in it, just herbs. “Agrisea is the family’s main business and Ocean Organics is the sideline company that is just as important, and we plan it to always be here for our customers. We refuse to have the products mass produced — I think you would lose something. Keeping it made in small batches regularly is the best thing. Even the base cream took us ages to find as it needed to be special. We found a Chinese chemist and medical herbalist and he makes it especially for us. “Having created these

products is amazing, there are little stories all the time. Our grandchild uses it for eczema — a man came because the salve is the only thing that helps his skin condition that he has had for many years. Someone’s horse had an ulcer and the salve healed it. It sounds like a miracle but it really is that we have a phenomenal array of truly healing herbs, put together by a woman who knows her stuff. “There is always three per cent in the world things don’t work for but for the majority it helps. It is our go to balm. “Even our Agri Sea products are handmade with wooden paddles by people — not machines. We believe if you are going to sell something to people it is very important to sell something of high value.”

October 2017  HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES ADVERTORIAL

Improving joints

(Part 2) A recent client had been affected by osteoarthritis in his hips and shoulders. We created a personalised joint health programme that included supplements that can help promote healing in arthritic joints. After speaking with him today he said that he is mostly symptom free. The real hero however is not so much the dietary changes and supplements but his body’s own healing processes. All disease starts with changes to cell functions. If this is left unchecked it can lead to tissue damage and eventually to disease. Our bodies have incredible healing properties that can become overwhelmed by a disease process. While physical damage to joints can cause arthritis it is important to see it as a real disease and not just wear and tear. Joint cartilage appears as tough lifeless tissue. A closer look reveals something quite different. Cartilage matrix is secreted by specialised living cells called chondrocytes. These cells maintain small pieces of cartilage. Anything that negatively affects chondrocytes will eventually damage cartilage. Lose enough cartilage and you have osteoarthritis. Chondrocytes can become damaged

by several processes. Firstly free radicals can damage them to the point that they cannot function properly. If left unprotected by antioxidants the chondrocytes will die and the piece of cartilage it maintained will eventually be lost. Secondly, corrosive enzymes called matrix metalloproteinases (MMP’s) attack the collagen matrix of cartilage, and thirdly unwanted inflammation can damage chondrocytes. What we need to do is to protect chondrocytes, reduce inflammation, reduce free radical activity and reduce MMP activity. What this does is to allow our natural cartilage healing processes to spring to life. The result is less pain and improved mobility. The answer is an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant dense diet. We then add anti-inflammatory supplements that can help restore joint healing processes. Please contact me for personalised advice. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. “This is a very important result for the NZ wood processing and manufacturing sector,” says Mr Brian Stanley, chair of WPMA. “The coalition parties have campaigned vigorously in this election on the need of our sector and the communities depending on it for jobs to get a much fairer deal. I thank them for this and agree with the incoming government that neo-liberal policies do not sit well with this industry. “As I have said on many occasions, the 30 years or so since privatisation of the NZ forestry sector and our exposure to (so-called) global free markets has, in fact, resulted in sector decline, high losses of jobs and contributed to regional economic deterioration.” WPMA contends that current markets are not working because NZ wood processors and manufacturers face unfair competition from overseas rivals who get government subsidies. Mr Stanley says that he is heartened by the coalition’s desire to see the NZ wood industry thrive by remedying these grossly unfair trading conditions. “We must stop NZ logs being siphoned off overseas to manufacturer’s receiving government handouts at the cost of jobs in our regions and our ability to add value. We look forward to working closely with the new government to urgently bring about these much needed changes.”

large NPK fertiliser companies who are applying this outdated science are failing the majority of the farmers of New Zealand. Although farmers are the focus of the attacks from environmentalists on water pollution, the fault lies with the two large NPK fertiliser companies who provide a specialist service and sell the fertiliser to 95% of our farmers who are following their advice. Because soil fertility is so specialised these companies have been getting away with focussing on sales rather than honest advice and honest science. Evidence of this is the propaganda which has led to the acceptance that superphosphate and urea grow grass. This is so entrenched in farmers’ minds that a lot of fertiliser applied is carried

acceptance that pH should be 5.8 to 6.0. A scientific table showing the availability of nutrients at differing pH levels illustrate that phosphate is twice as available at pH 6.3 compared to the availability of phosphate at 5.8pH. This is real scientific evidence that farmers have been taken for a ride. So to increase your current phosphate levels just move your pH from 5.8 to 6.3. Your soil phosphates will actually increase without applying any phosphate. There are two points to this picture I have painted. 1. Superphosphate, DAP and urea are all water soluble. If these products are applied in excess where do you think they will end up? 2. To stop the cause of the pollution, not only will these water soluble products need to be stopped but the NPK trained specialists will need reprogramming. To change the direction of such an entrenched system won’t be easy for these chemical NPK companies or the farmers who follow them. For real science with integrity which will save money and grow more grass, ring me. David Law, Forward Farming, 027 490 9896.

WI TH HO LD IN G

One of our major fertiliser companies has stepped up to the plate to offer a helping hand to save our rivers and streams from future pollution. Of course this would be like putting the handbrake on a fully laden logging truck on a downward slope. With the unquestionable evidence that these NPK fertiliser companies are largely to blame for this mess, they are running out of road. To keep their foot on the accelerator is not a viable alternative. I applaud the CEO for joining the team. Although there is an utterance from this committed team to stop the pollution, the answers of how to do it will need to be found. The current science is failing the environmental futures test and the two

on the back of superphosphate. If you need K and S a likely brew could be potassic sulphur super. If you needed Mg a likely product would be surpentine super or if your budget is tight Super 10 would do the job. A modern change lately is the use of DAP which is a brilliant product to deliver soluble phosphate which is particularly efficient for cropping. Research has proven that it will not lift phosphate reserves in the soil unless applied in heavy applications. Where soil phosphate levels are already adequate, (30+ Olsen P), to use super phosphate as a carrier is wasting farmers’ money and only helping fertiliser companies increase their sales and profits, and the excess is polluting our rivers and streams. A soil nutrient which is being used up with every tanker load of milk leaving the farm is calcium. Research has shown that an average dairy farm would need 300kg of lime per hectare per year to keep up with what is leaving the farm as milk. Lime would therefore be a much more cost effective carrier for elements which are essential like potassium, magnesium, sulphur and trace elements. Another fallacy is the

HASTINGS

Appreciating Hastings and surrounds Hastings is one of the two major urban areas in Hawke’s Bay and the district takes in a large and diverse area with a vast majority of productive land that is important to the regional economy. Cape Kidnappers and Te Mata Peak are included in the local geographical hero list of must visits. Hastings City is a busy supply town to the surrounding farms, orchards, and vineyards and is home to the regional hospital. The district is the centre for all things wine and food, and covers a vast and scenic area boasting some of New Zealand’s finest wineries with some 65 wineries established across the district. Fine examples of Spanish Mission architecture built after the 1931 earthquake can be appreciated, including the Hawke’s Bay Opera House, and the cycle trails are well-used for exploration and have fast become a reason to visit the area. Heretaunga Street has an evolving enclave of cafes, restaurants and bars, and an old lady of Heretaunga Street - the Focal Point Cinema - was given a makeover not so long ago and is well worth visiting and taking a break to watch a movie. The Hastings Night Market is held every Thursday from 5-9pm during the daylight saving season and a new vibrancy has developed in the inner city with its fresh produce, artisans and

ethnic street food, local artists and performers in attendance. Placed throughout its central business area an impressive display of public artworks is on show. Of special significance is Nga Pou o Heretaunga – a collection of maori carvings (pou) that sits permanently in Civic Square. Each piece represents an important maori ancestor from the Heretaunga district. Follow the Art Trail and have an ice cream at Rush Munro’s old fashion ice cream garden and to cool off in the summer sun, visit Splash Planet waterpark located in more than 6.5 hectares of subtropical gardens. This theme park offers many rides and attractions to keep the whole family happy. The village of Havelock North offers many shopping and dining experiences and also well worth a day excursion are Te Awanga, Haumoana and Clifton, as are the beautiful white sandy beaches of Waimarama and Ocean Beach. Walk to the top of Te Mata Peak and visit the dramatic Cape Kidnappers, home of the world’s largest mainland gannet colony, and one of the top 50 golf courses in

Q. What are the differences between galvanised steel and ZINCALUME® steel? A. Galvanised steel is coated in almost pure zinc while ZINCALUME® steel is coated in an alloy of approximately 55% aluminium, 43.5% zinc and 1.5% silicon. Although both products are produced as continuously hot dip coated products, they perform very differently, especially in construction industry applications such as roofing and walling. All coatings protect steel sheets from corrosive attack by acting as a barrier to exclude air, water and other corrosion causes from contact with the steel substrate. The rate of corrosion of ZINCALUME® steel is initially very similar to that of galvanised steel. However, the longer life of Zincalume® steel is attributed to the rapid slowing down of this corrosion rate shortly after the initial exposure to the environment. This is due to the formation of aluminium-containing corrosion products that consequently add to the barrier protection of the coating. All the while, the zinc present in the ZINCALUME® coating is available to sacrificially protect the steel at cut edges. This sacrificial mechanism is similar to galvanised steel in the typical (thinner) product thicknesses used in roofing and walling applications.

Irrigation Matters with Clem Powell The mystery of gravity driven pumps Everyone wants something for nothing and pumps working from their own water supply are often a great way of getting water delivered to higher levels. The concept has been around since invention in late 1700s. Often referred to as ram pumps from their predecessors, Glockemann 320 Pumps are in fact gravity driven pumps. Without getting too technical, water rams are powered by the water hammer effect of the ports opening and closing whereas Glockemann 320 are operated by high volume/ low pressure water on a large diaphragm working a smaller piston and cylinder to give the lift pressure required. At end of stroke a valve opens and components return ready for next cycle. Water for the pressure side can come from either submersion of the inlet port, suction hose off the inlet port or dry mounting the pump where the water is tapped from the drive tube. This is common in Australia and other places where remoteness of installation and flash flooding are a risk.

Another difference between ram pumps and gravity driven pumps is that ram pumps need more velocity/ high drop as this is best for producing the water hammer to power them. Gravity driven need much less velocity and drop, usually between 0.6m and 1.8m, giving lift to 150m–200m vertical, although the spec charts do show delivery to 20m from 0.3m drop. This large power to lift ratio is not usually available from a ram pump. Glockemann 320 pumps are a robust cast iron construction and have proven to give years of reliable service before overhaul, which is an inexpensive and simple task if you are a do-ityourself person. Factors that influence calf mortality/antibiotic usage.

• Healthy outdoor environment • Calves separated so less disease risk and build immunity • Per calf by far most cost effective & no planning required • Lowest calf mortality rates • Lower Antibiotic usage/better calf welfare • Can be used with calf feeders (watch this space) • Pens: indoor feeding and effective use of space • Better working environment

• Ventilation: A baby calf must have fresh clean low ammonia air. • Bedding: Calf must have a clean comfortable dry bed. • Temperature: Must have a stable temperature (no quick changes) • Feed: Feed correctly from colostrum to concentrate. • Management: Have the correct systems (calf housing & feeding equipment) & management procedures to handle all above any size of farm. RURAL WHEELS

19

Rally bred resilience by Andy Bryenton

With warmer weather here many people will be thinking about summer adventures off the beaten track. For those with a love of excitement and power, motocross and off-road bikes exert a magnetic pull this time of year, while for others it’s the promise of dry, winding tarmac that gets the blood pumping. Then again, with initiatives afoot nationwide to get people out there on two wheels, perhaps it’s just ease of parking or fuel economy which appeal. While there are plenty of motorcycles which push the envelope in each of these directions — road-going power, off-road agility and frugal commuter practicality — there’s one which brings them all together into a happy medium. And it does so by approaching from a totally different direction. Honda’s new CRF250L actually has the profile of a working agricultural bike under its sharp panel work — or at least a distillation of all the lessons learned by Honda over decades of building machines that can fulfill multiple roles on the farm. Make no mistake, this is no rural workhorse though. The long suspension travel and high ground clearance, narrow profile for agility and willing 250cc fuel injected single cylinder engine of the CRF250L and its sister bike the

CRF350L Rally may be informed by the all-round reliability of Honda’s farming range, but there’s plenty of spice thrown in from the trophy-winning CRF off-road and enduro lineage as well. The Rally version of the CRF250L goes one better, drawing inspiration from some of Honda’s legendary endurance bikes of old. In the days when the Paris to Dakar rally cut clean through the wilds of Africa, big, high-riding motorcycles duked it out with the 4x4s and trucks of this gruelling race. From such sport bikes like Honda’s NX650 Dominator were born, and now the styling cues of bikes like this — and later adventure models — come together in the Rally spec of the new CRF. With twin headlights, a wind deflector and updated panel work, the Rally looks ready to go anywhere. Which is no illusion. Both iterations of the CRF250 are made to be learneraccessible, ready for the trail and the highway with just the addition of number plates. It’s a great bike for those who live within equal reach of town and country — an inexpensive commuter that can park in spaces too small even for many road bikes, plus a fun trail riding machine on the weekends.

Honda’s CRF250L takes it from the streets to the trail effortlessly

Have Honda hit the nail on the head? New riders seem convinced, with the fuel injected 250s meeting a great reception

over the ditch. And if anything, New Zealand has even more of the kind of terrain the CRF250L was made to tame.
