“To say that we are disappointed with the reporting back by the Select Committee on the Zero Carbon Bill is a significant understatement,” says Federated Farmers vice president and climate change spokesperson Andrew Hoggard. This decision places a huge burden on farmers already feeling the heat from this government. “The Federated Farmers submission to the Select Committee was not the only one to point out there is clear scientific evidence around how methane’s warming impact should be accounted for. Leading international climate scientists say we need to completely review the way the impact of livestock emissions as a major contributor to climate change is calculated. “This science shows that for methane from New Zealand’s livestock sector to no longer contribute to increased global temperatures, all that is required is a 10% reduction by 2050 and then stable emissions after that. “New Zealand’s methane emissions from stock are already trending down. Unlike other greenhouse gas emissions, like C02.” Instead, the Select Committee stuck with the 24 per cent to 47 per cent reduction target that was based on an international study which has no relevance to methane’s global warming effect and whose authors stated it should not be used by individual countries. “The only way to meet the Paris Agreement goal of restricting further increases in global temperatures is to reduce the production of carbon dioxide from the burning of fossil fuels. We can’t forget the Paris Agreement aims to reduce emissions without harming food production. “As it says in the agreement: ‘Increasing the ability to adapt to the adverse impacts of climate change and foster climate resilience and low greenhouse gas emissions
Andrew Hoggard, Federated Farmers vice president and climate change spokesperson
development, in a manner that does not threaten food production’. “Given the government’s methane targets will force the replacement of sheep and cattle with pine trees, so unless sawdust is suddenly edible, then it seems we are also ignoring the Paris Agreement. If the government had set targets based on what is actually required to achieve no additional warming, then this would have provided farmers with the ability to be rewarded for going past those targets and achieving ‘cooling effects’. “We could have utilised this to our advantage in marketing our products as ‘warming neutral’. Our products are already world-leading in their footprint and reducing production in New Zealand will only drive increased emissions offshore. “The government has missed a golden opportunity to take its farmers along with them. We will keep working to achieve lower emissions, but the pressure of this unattainable goal will eventually weigh heavily on some farmers.”

The National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee has announced that the Minister of Agriculture has agreed to issue an amendment to the code of welfare for dairy cattle to address behavioural needs and off-paddock systems. The new standards will come into effect on October 31, 2019. The code amendment was developed by NAWAC and has been widely consulted. “The amendment sets out new standards to ensure people working with dairy cattle meet their animals’ behavioural needs and adopt high levels of care when keeping dairy cattle in off-paddock facilities, including feed-pads, stand-off pads, wintering pads, and loose-housed and free-stall barns,” says NAWAC chairperson, Dr Gwyneth Verkerk. “Meeting behavioural needs is essential for dairy cattle welfare. It is very important that dairy cattle can lie down and rest in all management systems, including on pasture, on crops, and in off-paddock facilities. Dairy cattle like to lie down where it is comfortable and dry. They refuse to lie down on hard, wet or muddy ground and can become stressed as a result. “Keeping cows off paddock, especially in the long term, can present risks to animal welfare and the new standards address this. “Dairy cattle kept in off-paddock facilities beyond three days now have to be provided with a well-drained lying

area with a compressible soft surface or bedding and shelter. NAWAC also wants dairy cattle that are housed long-term to have access to outdoors, but affected farmers should be given time to comply. “The minister has agreed to delayed provisions for outdoor access and his officials will be working with us to determine how to implement these. The aim of the amendment is to encourage all those responsible for the welfare of dairy cattle to adopt the highest standards of husbandry, care and handling.
“It is expected that the amendment will be used as a guide for best practice.” NAWAC is an independent committee formed to give advice on animal welfare to the Minister of Agriculture. Codes of welfare expand on the requirements in the Animal Welfare Act 1999, with minimum standards and recommended best practice designed to provide for animals’ overall physical, health and behavioural needs.

ayne was working in forestry and truck driving and Sharon, a former bank manager, was employed at a geotech surveying company when she had an accident which encouraged them to re-evaluate their lifestyle. “I love how life gives people the ability to think about what they are doing. I lost my first husband at 23 years old, and life wasn’t easy. Just when we got to a point where things were going great I tripped over a shoe at work and smashed my head into a wall,” says Sharon. “When I tripped I had my handbag in one hand
and laptop in the other and didn’t want to drop either so broke my fall with my head. The doctors thought I had broken my neck but I hadn’t. It was the worst phone call I had to make to Wayne who was in the forest with hardly any cellphone reception.” Sharon ended up in a neck brace but didn’t realise she had a concussion. “I flew to Wellington in an unpressurised plane two days later for work. This ended with me being very unwell, and we went from hoping to travel one day to making it happen.” Wayne said it left him with a hollow

We decided to do what makes us happy as we had been constantly putting off our plans to travel the country in our bus.” Wayne and Sharon have been keeping a record of places where they had previously found work while on adventures. “We have been up to Russell and worked in a holiday park. We have packed kiwifruit in Katikati, milked cows and painted houses to name a few
things mixing with completely different types of people. “We went to Fiji with toys and books for schools and kindergartens in outback villages. There was no power — we slept on planks and washed with minimal water in a bucket due to the water shortage. We learnt what was really important as we helped and socialised with the locals who don’t have a lot but are happy.” Wayne and Sharon put photos and videos on a website to show others what they were doing in life and out of this came Seasonal Staff.

“Our blog created interest from employers and job seekers as we don’t just pick apples. There are opportunities for cleaners, restaurant staff, strawberry and cherry pickers, ski season and tractor operators. “Every employer has to give their permanent staff four weeks annual leave, and we can now help reduce pressure as we have engineers, builders, teachers, nurses, accountants, IT people, and unskilled people who just want to get the odd job as they travel. Our Seasonal Staff website allows people to look at the profiles available. “We never had the intention of building a seasonal work business, but there was a huge need as employers couldn’t find staff and travellers we met couldn’t find jobs. We would send emails to the businesses in areas we were travelling to and pre-booked a year’s work. We thought everyone did this, but they don’t. “The older generation has skills and wants to travel, and we help facilitate their opportunities. We have given people wings to follow their dream by pointing them in the right direction and giving them the ability to connect and do so much more. “We have some 700 workers registered and had more than one million website hits since June 7. It has taken off like a rocket — we are having 50 people join per day. Farmers who need a break can register and see who is available. They come up on a map around New Zealand, and most are mobile and will travel to

It is not the same as being a contractor so people can step right into jobs, and this is fantastic with the staffing shortage we have at present across the country. “The NZ Motorhome Association love the idea, and the most amazing part is we inspire others. HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES
Exploring the rose by Ann van Engelen
Roses have a significant place in New Zealand history with many people now specialising in growing the blooms in their home garden.
“I
have personally been growing roses for many years and have more than 600 bushes in my garden. A couple are more than 35 years old and still going strong,” says rose grower Sheree Gare. “Roses began to play a role with our early settlers coming from England in the early 19th century when ‘garden cemeteries’ were popular. Grave plots were fashionably planted with evergreen trees in England to symbolise eternal life. In New Zealand the Sweet Briar rose was planted amongst our dead, commencing as early as 1830 and now the rose, as we know it today, is gaining
back popularity in home gardens. The benefits of gardening are becoming widespread, and it gives me such pleasure to see everyday people gaining happiness from their roses. We get a sense of responsibility from tending plants, and we learn to look after and respect other living things. “Gardening allows us to be nurturers as plants don’t mind who is caring for them. Gardening can improve our mental health by boosting our selfesteem. Some people use gardening as a stress release while others like to socialise at gardening clubs, which are hugely popular today.”

Sheree says roses like to be pampered and will respond well to regular feeding and watering throughout the growing season. “Rose season starts around the middle of winter, and they start flowering at the end of October and can continue through to April/May. They are resilient plants and can survive for years, the more you pamper, the more they provide beautiful flowers. “Taking care of roses can be as big a task as you want it to be. I believe that growing roses can be compared to raising children. Many people will strongly advise you on how to raise them, but not all ideas suit each family. There are many differing ideas on what to do, how to do it, and when, but these are only guidelines and if you find a way that suits you, then follow it.” Roses are pruned in the winter, generally in July/August, and Sheree suggests ‘DDO’ — Dead, Diseased and Old canes, in that order. “I look at the bush and determine which canes I want to cut first. Any dead canes need to be removed trimming as close to the crown as possible, then the diseased ones. Once I have removed these, I reassess the bush for what is left. As a general rule, I prune about two-thirds off, but if there are not too many newer canes, then I leave some older ones. “A guideline for applying the first application of fertiliser is when the weather is warmer, and the soil temperatures have increased. Usually mid-September and then after the first
flush of flowers and again late January to give the bush a boost to continue flowering. There are many different fertilisers on the market today that are usually differentiated by the NPK status. That means the availability of Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium. It will usually be written on the bag. The higher the number — the higher the concentration of the nutrient. Mulching with compost or natural animal manure can also be applied to rose beds. “I believe spraying is a personal choice, and today modern roses are being bred for higher health. Building up the soil’s health and providing good nutrients and humus in the soil helps eliminate spraying needs. “I deadhead the spent flowers once roses have had their first flush by cutting off the flower at a five leafed set of leaves. It encourages growth and produces further blooms. “This practice can continue until midMarch, and then I let the bush rest over winter, before commencing the growing cycle again. “Beware of rabbits and possums as they can annihilate the roses and eat the new shoots and chew the tops off the roses. To combat them find a pest control system that suits your situation. “Internet today gives us so much information and a particularly good web page Helpmefind gives vast information on different rose varieties available including breeders, genetics and growing habits. “Rosarians across the country like to show their blooms and each year in

AN EQUESTRIAN
VISION by Ann van Engelen
Laura Macnab has grown up with horses on her parent’s beef and sheep farm, and this has led her into an equestrian interest resulting in overseas travel.
“I
have been wearing gumboots my whole life. Mum breeds Welsh ponies and Dad is also from a horsey family — so a love of horses is in my blood. My two sisters and I learnt to ride from a very young age, but I am the only one that stuck with it and gave it a crack professionally,” says Laura. “One of my favourite shows is Hawke’s Bay Royal A&P Show. I have been eventing here since I was four years old. Last year, I was Champion Senior Rider and was awarded the RAS medal. The Horse of the Year event is the biggest event on our equestrian calendar, and it is nice to catch up with friends you have made around the country. The orchards and diversity of farming in the area make it a very special place. The Hawke’s Bay horse community is
a very positive sporting environment.” Laura’s passion for horses has seen her represent New Zealand through the NZ Horse Council at the Australasian Grand National Championships in Australia. She placed third in the 21 to under 30-year-old age group and was also a team member in the Royal Agricultural Society Equestrian Tri-Nations team in England placing second. “Riding is mostly a solo sport, so competing as part of a team is an awesome experience.” Laura is in her last year of an ag science degree majoring in equine and would like to become a bloodstock agent, for racehorses and buy and sell on behalf. She also received a scholarship through Thoroughbred NZ, which will see

her travel to the Irish National Stud in Ireland next year. “I am extremely humbled and excited to have been chosen as one of this year’s recipients of the Irish National Stud Scholarship put up by the Taylor Family. This scholarship is extra special to me as Faith Taylor is my late grandmother Margaret Macnab’s sister. I am incredibly proud to be heading to Ireland in January 2019 has been a really great year for me, and this might just top it all off. “To be involved with horses, you must be prepared to work hard, and take all the advice you can get from experienced people — every single day I learn something new. “We have cliffs and hills on the farm, which is home to Hereford Angus cross beef cattle and a mix of sheep breeds. My sisters get the motorbike, and I grab the horse to muster the stock. We help where we can such as docking, drenching and shifting stock. “I show competitively and have worked in the thoroughbred industry for the last five years. Before university, I worked at Te Akau Stud during the summer. Now I do track work at the Awapuni Racecourse in the morning before uni. “I started competing because mum competed in the UK — she is English. I wanted to ride in the ring with the big kids, so she took me to a few shows when I was seven and 14 years later here I am. I have met the most incredible horsemen and women. As soon as we were tall enough to get on a pony, we

had to saddle, bridle, brush and care for our horses. Mum and dad gave us a really good start in life. My mum breeds our horses so she didn’t have to buy ponies for us and she breeds the perfect children’s ponies. If I am available, I help with the foaling, mares and stallion. “We hard feed our show animals, ensuring they get all the nutrients and supplements to perform at their best. Whether it is adding salt or a toxin
binder into their feed, make sure you can provide for them, especially if you want your animal to perform like an athlete. Even saddles and bridles have to fit correctly — you wouldn’t send a runner out with ill-fitting shoes or clothes. My horses get saddles fitted every six months to a year to ensure they can perform at their very best. “I am lucky to have the support of my family as often weekends in summer
are spent at horse shows. I am sure sometimes they would rather be somewhere else, but they understand my commitment to the sport, and I can’t thank them enough. “I was always the horse girl at school. I can’t imagine life without them. I help others when I can as a way to give back to help those who have helped me. Horses are where my heart lies, but I will always return to the family farm.”

Awards highlight progress Federated Farmers say it has never been more important for farmers to showcase to fellow New Zealanders the work they are doing to lighten their environmental footprint. “We are in the middle of a national debate on the best regulatory settings to help drive improved water quality in our rivers and lakes,” says Federated Farmers environment spokesperson Chris Allen. “Some of the talk might drive an impression that we are in some sort of downward environmental spiral when the truth is many farmers up and down the nation are putting in huge amounts of sustainability and biodiversity enhancement work.” Deadlines for the 2019 Ballance Farm Environment Awards in Horizons, Wellington and Waikato, have already passed, but it is not too late for farmers in eight other regions around New Zealand. “The awards process is a great chance to measure your own stewardship initiatives and successes against regional peers, to learn from others at BFEA networking and awards events, and to receive constructive advice and feedback from the growers and agribusiness professionals who serve on judging panels. “The advanced techniques some of these winners practise tend to become mainstream within a few years. A pain in the …
by John Arts
Muscle pain can have many causes; it can be anything from injury, genetics, medication side effects and a number of diseases. The most common causes of muscle pain I help with are cramp, restless leg syndrome, Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR), Fibromyalgia (FM) and side effects of cholesterollowering medication. There are a number of effective nutritional medicine strategies we can use to help with muscle function. Our goal is to help relax stressed muscle fibres and improve muscle oxygenation through improved circulation — this is important at night for conditions like cramped and restless legs. Muscle stiffness and pain can be a side effect of statin cholesterol-lowering drugs. Statins slow the rate of the enzyme responsible for cholesterol production. However, this same enzyme is responsible for producing coenzyme Q10. A high-quality coenzyme Q10 like the US-patented CoQsol can help. Some diseases cause muscle pain. Two more common problems are the inflammatory condition PMR and FM, a non-inflammatory muscle problem. With PMR we target overproduction of inflammatory immune system chemicals (cytokines and prostaglandins) and help restore immune function. With FM we focus on adding compounds like magnesium and
MSM (sulphur) to relax and oxygenate muscles. Once we know the cause of the pain, my role is to identify the healing processes damaged or affected by the problem. For example, cramp and restless leg syndrome can be an indication of mineral deficiencies or poor peripheral circulation. As an example, people with cramp generally respond very well to magnesium therapy. The best magnesium supplements use expensive, but better-absorbed amino acid chelated forms. While magnesium can be very effective, some people need to be careful with magnesium therapy, especially those with digestive issues or on some medications. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. For questions or advice contact John on 0800 423 559 or email john@abundant.co.nz. Who are you going to call? Call in the professionals The clock is ticking, the seasons are changing, and there’s plenty left to do before it’s time to take a well-deserved break. With the holidays looming, and barely eight weeks away, there are some jobs around the home and farm which are out of the league of even the best-intentioned DIY-er.

Tradespeople will tell you that this is the critical season for getting things done before that dreaded last-minute rush when nobody is happy to be told they have left things too late. Suppliers and factories are about to start winding down their inventories ahead of the Christmas break, and shipping in parts and equipment from overseas can take a hammering when you’re competing with the riot of gift-sending and receiving. With that timetable in mind, tradespeople suggest that right now is the time to focus in on what’s necessary to make it through the summer, getting the fundamentals sorted while both you and they have time. That means important things like

water supply, with enough tank capacity and fresh filters to keep the family healthy and hydrated when it gets hot. It is the time of year to put the boot down on leaky toilets, taps and showers, as these can bleed a valuable resource dry when the sun really gets cooking. Another aspect of country life that’s best not left to chance is the ‘triple threat’ of cooling systems. If you’re in the dairy trade, that means giving a long cool assessment to your chiller plant, and asking if it will take the heat this year or if it needs a serious upgrade or replacement. Air conditioners for the home are now also often in need of a top-up, with early adopters of heat pump technology benefiting greatly from a refurbishment of their existing units. Thirdly, there’s nothing worse than a boiling hot ute or tractor cab in the middle of summer. Auto air conditioning
is easy to re-gas and saves hours of suffering and sweat. If it’s getting a little late in the year to contemplate big jobs, such as reroofing with its co-commitment insulation and perhaps new extractors fans as well, make sure to call now and beat everyone else for the top spot in January–February 2020. Forecasts predict that our rainy spring will turn into a long and balmy summer, so talk to your tradespeople soon and be prepared to take advantage on the other side of Christmas.

The biggest of deliveries by Andy Bryenton
There’s an old joke that the most difficult job in the world would be selling doors, door to door. If there’s a growth industry to mention in these times of spiralling building costs and widely reported construction shortages, it’s delivering houses, right to your house. Having a relocatable home delivered when you’re short on space ticks a few important boxes and is making a resurgence at the same time as a parallel industry, converting containers into habitation and workshops, is also booming. The first big benefit is cost. A pre-built structure may need some finishing off to make it do all you want it to, but it’s within the financial league of even first home buyers. Tens of thousands of dollars cheaper than a new build, even when transport and pilings are taken into account, in many cases, this alone has had many people doing the maths, but there are other credentials too. Historical features are some folks’ preference, whether they be turn of the century or art deco, or even just reminiscent of the home they grew up in. All of these features are remarkably tricky to fake with modern materials and techniques, but on many pre-loved homes, they are part of the package. Think stained glass windows, high ceilings, bay windows or native timber,
06 879 6099 OR ELWYN 027 404 2535
and there might be something able to load onto a specialist house haulage truck that fits the bill. Once again, the cost of owning a classic home in situ might be too high. Relocating one, and restoring it to its grandeur? If you have the time and the tools, a little input now could secure a grand old home for life that just keeps getting more valuable. Finally, there’s the old adage that they don’t make them like they used to. While modern construction techniques are
brilliant for creating modern structures, there’s still a school of thought that says the old, built-to-last-centuries style of architecture is evergreen. There’s a lot to recommend contemplating the biggest of door to door services if you’re in the market to build. Make sure to get all the costs worked out and balance it up — you may be pleasantly surprised.

Number eight wire mentality by Andy Bryenton
We’re enjoined to ask where we’d be without our gumboots by the famous Fred Dagg song, but where would New Zealand be without Henry Bessemer? The ‘father of modern steel’ is also the man who made fencing wire possible, and as such, he’s an unsung hero of our farmlands. Bessemer lived in the height of the industrial revolution, in the era when steam and steel ruled the waves, made empires and meant big, big money. The kind of wire old steelmaking processes produced was short runs of thick and brittle stock; not much use for fencing the miles and miles of open land to

be found in the new colonies of New Zealand and Australia. Bessemer invented a new kind of furnace, which blew oxygen through ‘pig iron’ while it was liquid hot, blasting away impurities and making inexpensive steel. The result was perfect for ‘ductile’ use; it could be coiled out into massive long runs of wire. There was no way New Zealand was ignoring this innovation. Bessemer kicked production into high gear in the mid-1850s, and by 1866 John Grigg of Ashburton called for tenders for 20 miles (32 kilometres) of wire fencing. Orari Gorge Station had 48 kilometres of fencing up by 1871 and had doubled that by 1874. Moa Flat Station, between Dunedin and Alexandra, had 402 kilometres of wire fencing by 1879. Number eight wire had landed, and using it in innovative ways made this
product a byword for ingenuity. Fencing has been a vital activity for farmers here since the introduction of livestock, thanks to the wily and persistent nature of sheep themselves. Today, fencing contractors don’t have to rely on products such as the prerolled, iron-battened ‘colonial sheep fence’, which was shipped here from Sheffield, England in pioneering times. A tried and true method evolved in the 1960s with the advent of 12.5 gauge wire and tanalised posts treated with copper arsenate. The future may well hold posts reforged from old milk bottles if recent innovations take hold. Tractormounted post drivers and ATV vehicles have made it easier to access those long and lonely runs of wire singing in the wind, but expertise is what keeps them strong. We’re certain that old Mr Bessemer would approve.

First to be called On these pages, we’re presented with a vast range of professionals who will come to the aid of local farmers when they are in need. From mechanics to builders, plumbers to vets, there are individuals and companies who traverse the countryside day after day, keeping agriculture working. The first such group in New Zealand history was the mobile shearing gangs, and in their early days, they had the reputation of ‘wild west’ characters. Indeed, the fastest shearers in a gang were called the ‘guns’ after the quickdraw artists of the American plains. Fastest in each group of these travelling, hardworking (and often hard-drinking) shearers was called the Don (poking fun at the Dons of Oxford University) or the ringer. Farmers needed these men with their specialist skills, as the window of opportunity for getting the mob shorn and the wool factored and off to market was slim. Much wool was exported halfway around the world, on a schedule decided by the speed of sailing ships. So they were respected, these blokes (in an age before workplace equality, the shearers were universally men), but also mistrusted as roguish characters, with their reputation for swearing and for settling arguments with a bout of bare-knuckle boxing. Preachers might fulminate, but the shearers were vital to the industry.
Top shearers with manual blades were able to power through 75 sheep a day or more. In the 1880s mechanised shearing came to New Zealand, and there arose many tales of top ‘guns’ trying to best the machines with skill alone. Eventually, the machinery was embraced as part of the skill of shearing, and today, the record stands at more than 700 sheep shorn in a day. The spectacle of seeing the best shearers face-off, which had always been bet on and remarked upon, became a real competition in 1870, almost a century before the founding of the Golden Shears. Today, shearers are a professional bunch well removed from the rough-edged colonial days. The old ‘uniform’ of black singlet, lanolinoiled trousers and wool-bale shoes has become part of the stereotype of the Kiwi farmer. Instead of a gang with manual shears, farmers now call in a

The tractor, which ploughed the field, the combine harvester, which reaped the crop, the trucks, which took it to market and the excavators that built the road they travelled on all have one thing in common. They all owe the power at their cores to a peculiar German scientist who refused to let ridicule and laughter beat him down. You can see his name every time you fill up at the petrol station because it’s Diesel. Rudolf Diesel, to be exact, and he was a man obsessed with the inefficiency of steam engines. The fact that the steamers of his day only converted 10 per cent of their fuel to energy was the thought that kept him up at night, tinkering in his workshop. People called him mad and compared him to that other famous (but fictional) Teutonic scientist, Frankenstein. Diesel worked on his ideas for 12 years while others insisted that steam would always be king. In 1893, he proudly produced his essay on pressure combustion; only to find he’d made mistakes, and that the engine he described would never work. Still, he didn’t quit. Diesel approached steel tycoons Krupp AG and Maschinenfabrik Augsberg with an idea that would work. It was an engine we’d recognise today, which introduced fuel then compressed it until the heat of compression ignited

the fuel to push a piston. Of course, it worked, and things took off very quickly, indeed. By 1905, the turbocharger and intercooler were invented — now a part of most modern diesels, along with common-rail injection. By the dawn of the first world war, Diesel the German inventor was less well known than ‘diesel’ the fuel named after him. Diesel was a great invention for New Zealand, where the land was rough and lacking the massive infrastructure
needed for steam-powered commerce. Today, diesel power has come a long way, with heightened efficiency and horsepower, fewer emissions and quieter running. So much so that one of the most important people you can call on in an emergency is your local diesel mechanic, who keeps the ‘muscles’ of agriculture and industry flexing, more than 120 years after they told poor Rudolph it couldn’t be done!

TO BUILD OR RENOVATE 2020’s kitchen rules by Andy Bryenton
It’s life imitating art imitating ‘reality’ in this year’s hot kitchen design trends, which expand on the re-definition of the kitchen, not as an austere workspace designed to nickel-and-dime your house price for the next occupant but to be the palette from which you can create culinary soul.

The old, stark white and stainless kitchen is out, according to US interior designers and the latest home renovation periodicals. Inspiration for the new year’s look has come from the plethora of kitchen and cooking-themed reality shows and game shows, which dominate broadcast prime time. With top chefs espousing their philosophy of cooking as an artistic process, it’s becoming less about putting three veg and a chop in front of the family at nights, than it is about having a space in which to be happy and creative. Hence colour is back in the kitchen, with coloured cabinetry or cupboard doors an easy fix to brighten up space. Natural wood is back, with wood panel

flooring for wet areas now a very viable and affordable technology to replace vinyl. Touches like bay windows with edible herbs planted in terracotta pots point to another big trend — the visible pantry. Increasingly, the provisions that stock a kitchen are as important in terms of the aesthetic as the appliances. So while exposed industrial-style tapware in gunmetal, brass, copper and pewter is big — glass-fronted fridges and open shelves are bigger. It’s ostensibly about being able to see just where everything is as you piece together a gourmet dinner, but the added bonus is that your friends and guests will be able to see the fine cheeses, fresh veggies, lovely cuts of meat and aromatic, exotic spices on
display. The kitchen is no longer about hiding ingredients, but about proudly displaying the fact that you have things like preserved Greek lemons, crushed almonds and wasabi aioli at hand. The final new addition to the modern kitchen is less inspired by reality telly and more practical, however. Three-D
printing technology has now given tile designers the opportunity to recreate large-scale slabs of ‘marble’ out of ceramics. The time has come when a gigantic marble-look benchtop can be fitted without fear of those preserved lemons turning it to a pitted mess.

TO BUILD OR RENOVATE Security takes flight by Andy Bryenton
If you thought that unmanned aerial recon vehicles were something from a spy thriller or the latest military conflict, you’d be correct. Little drones with a powerful camera that can support facial-recognition programs and adapt to their environment so as not to waste time buzzing around the good guys are out there in the field. Now they’re out there on rooftops in suburbia, too. The issue with static camera systems is that they record all the time, they can’t get the right angle to identify hooded or heavily clothed burglars, and they can be ‘cased out’ and eliminated with a dab of spray paint by truly determined thieves. Not so the Sunflower Labs ‘bee’ system, which takes drone technology and sensor lighting to a new level. The system, developed by an American company made up of software geniuses, and electrical engineering inventors situates many small garden lights around the property, linked to a central computer called ’The Hive’. The James Bond trickery begins when these
sensors begin to learn the routines of the household, identifying the difference between cars, pets and people — so they know when it’s a stranger calling instead of one of the family. Vibration and motion sensors light up the ‘sunflowers’ around the activity. If it really is an intruder, the next phase is deployed. The ‘Bee’ is an advanced drone quadcopter, which flies by ultrasonics like a bat. It is designed to autonomously avoid obstacles and acquire good, crisp footage of the face of whoever has come unexpectedly calling, without filming neighbouring properties to preserve the privacy of others. Of course, the scene is well-lit by the sunflower lamps all around. Imagine the shock of trying to stealthily enter a home when you are confronted by a flying high-definition camera. That’s quite a deterrent! When it’s done, the Bee goes back to its Hive to recharge and upload video. While the system is still in its final testing stages, there’s a buzz about this robotic bee and its implications for home security. Hundreds of people have
already signed up to install a Sunflower system as soon as it’s green-lit, and it won’t be long before it comes to New Zealand, we’re sure.

Kodo philosophy class Mazda are big on their philosophies, with a lot of column inches of advertising copy devoted to the very Zen-like deep thought behind their engineering. All this could be written off as the equivalent of Audi’s vorsprung dursch technik or BMW’s claims to ultimate driving prowess, if it wasn’t proven to deliver nice results. Take the MX-5 for example. A car which did away with a lot of the extraneous bits and delivered the philosophy of ‘horse and rider in balance and harmony’. That sounds a bit high-brow for a small sports drop top, until you drive one (one of the original, late 80s models) and see that they knew what they were on about. Which is why, when Mazda say that their new Mazda3 represents the high point of their evolving Kodo — Soul of Motion philosophy by stripping away the needless bells and whistles and delivering a smart, engaging little sedan, it’s time to take notice. The fact that they have a sedan at all is fantastic in this era of the cross over SUV. People used to buy those to be different; now having a tidy four door car makes you the rebel at the edge of the bell curve. It looks good, too. Mazda describe the exterior styling as a ‘single brush stroke’, and it’s quite the opposite of the fussy futurism of cars like the Civic Type R or the Toyota CR-R with their fins, blades, vents and slashes. Here’s how they describe it; “Every element of All-New Mazda3 Sedan has been created with the intention to further strengthen the

connection between car and driver. A less is more approach has been followed to develop a cabin that’s as beautiful as it is functional.” What you get is black leather and chrome functionality, like something Darth Vader would design if he was an upscale architect. Power in the Limited and GTX specs is provided by the superior Skyactiv 2.5 litre inline four engine, delivering over 180hp and yet still cracking down on fuel economy with auto-stop features
and Mazda’s finely tuned fuel injection for 6.5l per 100ks. Those who want a hot version will have to wait to see if Mazdaspeed will sprinkle chili flakes on this latest offering, perhaps also shoehorning in AWD. Until then, the GTX strikes a nice balance between features and cost, and really does have that paredback purity of purpose which Mazda’s philosophy advertises.
