Leadership challenge for growers The finalists in the inaugural Ahuwhenua Young Maori Grower Award 2020, have been told that one of the big challenges facing Maori, is increasing the number of young Maori into leadership roles in the horticultural sector.

The three finalists, 24-year-old Brandon Cross, 26-year-old Maatutaera Akonga and 25-year-old Finnisha Tuhiwai, were taking part in an intensive three-day study tour designed to provide a range of insights, inspiration and experiences across the horticultural sector. The Young Maori Farmer Award was inaugurated in 2012 and is designed to recognise up-and-coming young Maori in the farming and now horticulture sectors. This year the competition is for horticulture. It is built on the vision of the great leaders Sir Apirana Ngata and Lord Bledisloe who sought to inspire and encourage Maori to excel in the wider agri-sector. One of this year’s competition judges, Matiu Julian of Primary ITO, says while Maori make up 28 per cent of the workforce in the sector, only four per cent are in leadership roles. “All three finalists in this year’s competition are in leadership roles, but they are the exception rather than the rule. The study tour organised by New Zealand Apples and Pears was used as a platform for observing the finalists and selecting a winner to be announced in

November. It was designed to give the finalists an insight into the innovation taking place within horticulture, be inspired by Maori leaders and learn from key people who are involved across the horticulture value chain.” The group visited the Ngati Pahauwera Development Trust Orchard in Napier and the Plant and Food Research facility in Hawke’s Bay. They were hosted by the Turners and Growers innovation team and Berries Farm NZ, and also participated in a presentation from Horticulture New Zealand. They spent time with Ngahiwi Tomoana, the chair of Ngati Kahungunu, his wife Mere and Karl Wixon, a designer, educator, project manager, strategist and ‘kaupapaholic’. Matiu Julian says the three-day study tour offered the finalists a sense of connection and celebration of Maori success as the next generation of young Maori looking to evolve and live up to the Ahuwhenua Trophy legacy in horticulture. “The winner of the Ahuwhenua Young Maori Grower competition will be announced in Rotorua on Friday, November 20.”

Tangoio and Tutira logging

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

Drivers and locals can expect to see logging works and some traffic disruption around Tangoio and Tutira from November until April. “Pan Pac Forest Products will be logging in Hawke’s Bay Regional Council managed forest on the Tangoio Soil Conservation Reserve. They will also be building roads and skid sites for next year’s logging in the Tutira Regional Park,” says Forest management adviser Ben Douglas. “We are logging some land around Tangoio that’s close to the road. This means traffic will be affected, and there will be some delays for motorists between November and April. Please keep an eye on the Transport Agency website for updates. “To manage the health and safety risk for walkers, Tangoio Walkway, including access to Te Ana waterfall, will be closed from November until May. Access to and camping at Lake Tutira will be as normal, but most of the Tutira Walkway will also be closed over the same period. “We ask campers and walkers to follow our signage to keep everyone safe. There are lots of other tramping and walking options in the Tutira District, and we recommend people check the Department of Conservation website for options.” Hawke’s Bay Regional Council owns 640 hectares of forest across six properties and manages all

he couple were named Hawke’s Bay/Wairarapa Share Farmers of the Year in the NZ Dairy Industry Awards in 2017. “We had a herd of 260 mainly Holstein Friesian cows, and have taken on a nearby 600-cow contract milking position. This is the second time in 10 years that we have run two dairy farms at once,” says Shiralee. “It was a last-minute opportunity that we were offered in May, which meant it was hard finding additional experienced staff. The 325-hectare block is owned by the Poyntzfield Partnership and has a 50-bale rotary milking shed. “The milking platform is 280-hectares and is 10 minutes from the 165-hectare farm which we have called home since June 2019. Our children Ashton, Jorden, Samuel, Suzannah, Peter, Daisy and Bob, all enjoy helping out when required. We employed two people who were already

working on the farm and produced 155,000 kilograms of milksolids in 2019-20, but production was down because of the drought. “The move was character-building. A lack of feed compounded by the drought forced the herd to be dried off in late March, and there were animal health issues. We knew we would face a few challenges in our first season, but certainly not that many. Within months of our arrival, we were fighting to save cows with theileriosis.” The disease is caused by a bloodborne parasite, primarily transmitted by ticks. “It is widespread in half of the North Island. Our stock became infected by grazing on the same property as a mob of cattle from up north. It causes anaemia and cows can go downhill quickly. It stays in their system and comes out in times of stress. The grass

shortage made it worse. We bought-in molasses, a high-energy feed, to try and keep as many animals alive as we could, but we lost 15 cows.” The farm produced almost 100,000kgMS in the 2019–20 season. That was 20,000kgMS behind the Seerdon’s target, but the result still eclipsed the farm’s previous production record by 20,000kgMS. “We ensured we came into our second season with plenty of feed. About 150 tonnes of maize silage was contracted just as the drought started. That helped us through the summer and autumn, and we were still feeding it in the winter,” said Rob. “In mid-June, the herd had an average body condition score of 4.9, a month out from calving. We are really looking forward to having a good season. We have regrassed about 80 per cent of the milking platform with hybrid Italian ryegrasses, and our average pasture cover is 2,400kg/DM/ha. “The herd started calving in midJuly. That is our first spring milking heifers born following an overhaul of mating practices. Previously, cows were mated using sires from a single genetics company. In 2017, we had our herd scored by approved aAa analyser Tracey Zimmerman.” aAa is a dairy cattle breeding guide created by a Vermont Holstein Friesian breeder in 1950. “Analysers study all the parts of each cow and determine the causes of functional problems, such as a narrow pelvis. They teach breeders how to prevent the same problems in the next

generation of animals. We looked into it after talking to another dairy farmer. Under our previous system, we were becoming frustrated with the quality of the feet and udders in our herd. “For the past three years, the herd’s two-year-old heifers have been inspected and scored by Tracey’s partner Jurjen Groenveld prior to mating. They receive an individual lifetime score, a six-digit code, which is used to find a bull to correct the animal’s weaknesses. “It is not an easy task, and we source bulls from five or six genetics companies, with the aim of producing a strong cow with good longevity. The

Heavy Duty Stump Chipping and Mulching

matchmaking operation is made even harder by trying to breed a fully A2A2 herd. We can only use bulls with the A2A2 gene. A2 milk is sought-after for its health benefits. “The herd was DNA profiled five years ago to identify animals producing milk free from the A1 protein. “Three-quarters of the herd is now A2A2.” Entries for the 2021 NZ Dairy Industry Awards are now open, and Rob and Shiralee urge others to give it a go. Wool to the fore by Ann van Engelen

Barbie Cassidy describes herself as a sheep person, brought up in the country at the foothills of the Wakarara Ranges.

“I

was a war child, and my father had sheep and raised racehorses. He believed I should work hard and from five years old it was my job to get rid of the rabbits on the farm,” says Barbie. “I had a cocker spaniel, called Sue, a knife, a little spade and one of mum’s stockings. I would walk around the farm, and Sue would find the rabbit holes. I

would pull the babies out, dispatch them and cut off the tails. Dad gave me a threepence per tail and Sue ate the meat. “My other jobs included collecting the tufts of wool off the fences and plucking any dead sheep I found. The wool I gathered was so valuable a bale would buy a cow or nearly a car. “In those times, some dogs got fed

twice a week, and lived in old tanks that were freezing in winter and hot in summer.” Barbie married Garth Cassidy who worked in the family business Cassidy Transport. “We had 30 stock trucks, and people kept asking Garth to run for parliament. Twenty-six people went up for the job, including Ruth Richardson. Garth got through to the last three. “It was a nightmare that election night as I said I would divorce him if he were an MP. We had animals and four children, and I had absolutely no

desire to live in Wellington. John Falloon became Minister of Agriculture and two friends and I stayed with John and his wife in Wellington. While we were there, a gift arrived from Lord Sam Vesty, previously of Tomoana Works in Hastings. It was a little round dog bed for their Highland terrier. “I thought it was a good idea, but it was made of synthetic rubbish. John suggested we make something from wool. I went home and sat drawing at the kitchen table. That day, Neil Sloan, a saddler and I made a Labrador and a Jack Russell bed. We improved the

shape from round to oval and found a friend to sew the covers. We filled those first two with bags of gifted wool knops. “The wool knops are made with a machine that blows strong wool with force to make shapes. A man called Phil Collins was using it to insulate houses. I rang him to congratulate him on his efforts. He came and gave me two big plastic bags of knops. We made the dog beds with it, and my soapbox thing is now to get strong wool in the light.“ Barbie says a hobby was born, the dogs approved and the word spread like a chain letter. “Nearly 30 years later, the beds are still made on a daily basis with many

more uses for knopped wool arising. The knop wool doesn’t flatten and is therapeutic. One day I started putting the wool into sacks, and a labrador sat comfortably on the sack. Now I make a sack bed for farm dogs, with four kilograms of long fleece wool. “Each dog needs its own, never pass a bed on to other dogs because if a bitch has been on heat, another dog will rip it up. “I use a finer, sanitised small ball in pillows for people. The small version is for very important passengers, in hospital, for children in car seats and they are great between legs following a hip transplant.

Knops of wool are used in all of Barbie’s pillows and dog beds for their therapeutic qualities and natural warmth

“My website, vipbeds.co.nz has all the options available. The wool gives the dogs joints a bit of a massage. Letters constantly arrive attesting to the therapeutic help from both forms of wool. “We sold our property and moved to the beach to retire. Two days a week I go to my shed and post my beds and pillows. All our sofas were filled with wool. Our family does not have any synthetics at all. “We just wear and live in wool, silk, cotton and linen and never ever get a cold. “We only believe in natural fibres because synthetics are so bad for you.

I married an amazing man who did so much in this district. He got roads where there were no roads and started a marine reserve and RT radios in trucks. “Every day has been exciting, with lots of fun, but the world is changing so much. It is time we get back to the good stuff, and bring wool to the forefront of New Zealand homes. “We need to back our sheep farmers and realise the health benefits of wool products. It is a waste to have bales of wool stored in sheds because nylon is the most used product. We need to lead the world with woollen products. It is right here in our own backyard and Kiwis seem blind to it.”

Good news for designers, builders and architects, as the building code changes to accommodate new technology, materials and practices

It’s all part of the Ministry for Business, Innovation and Employment’s (MBIE) push to slash through red tape and alleviate the issues building companies face in addressing our shortage of both residential and commercial space.

WE’VE GOT SHEDS FOR EVERY FARM ASK IN-STORE FOR YOUR COMPETITIVE QUOTE

Changes earlier in the year removed consent requirements for many simple structures. However, this latest round of changes, initially slated for September but delayed by Covid, addresses ways to tighten up the paperwork, remove ambiguity, and streamline the process of getting a project up to building code standard. The proposed changes focus on acceptable solutions and verification methods across a range of aspects of the trades. For example, cladding requirements are being looked at in the context of preventing fire spread, and there are new acceptable solutions for stormwater to assist in surface water issue management. Drainage, gutters, downpipes and predators, internal wet areas, and even accessibility for light switches and plug sockets get some

attention. All in all, these changes add up to an easier road to compliance. “Between February 17 and April 17 2020, MBIE consulted on proposals to issue two new Acceptable Solutions and amend twelve existing Acceptable Solutions and Verification Methods,” said ministry spokespeople. “In total, there were 27 amendments proposed across 12 documents. Submissions came from a range of people in the building and construction sector, including building consent authorities (BCAs), designers, builders, homeowners, suppliers and manufacturers. “After analysing feedback that was received during the consultation process, MBIE has decided to proceed with the majority of proposed changes, with some minor amendments.”

Solar builds just got easier by Andy Bryenton

Solar power is a technology that has been teetering on the edge of massive uptake for the past decade, with pros and cons relating to its payback time and cost to benefit ratio filling kilometres of columns like these. Now, it looks like a decisive point has come down in solar’s favour, with building consents removed from ground-based solar arrays. It may have a much larger impact in rural areas than in urban environments, and not just due to space constraints. The new amendments to building rules, which came into effect at the beginning of September, make it clear that there are no consents required for groundbased, ie not mounted on a roof, solar arrays up to 20 square metres, or double this if the design and build is undertaken by a qualified professional. However, that sized restriction is struck off for those building solar in rural areas. To be fair, that’s also where the open space is there for the taking, in areas, perhaps, too steep for livestock which conveniently face north. Not that a single gigantic solar array may be needed for some of the most popular rural applications we’ve discovered for free, plentiful sunlight. Helping boost water heating systems in a cowshed is one of those with a growing track record of success, while another is gathering photovoltaic energy to help refrigeration systems do their job. There’s a nice symmetry to this, as the hotter the sun gets, them or it helps cool the vats and ice banks. One area where this new lack of building consent will make a big difference is in remote water pumping stations.

EITHER WAY IT’S 20K

Solar power works wonders in climates harsher than ours; now new building regulations have made it cheaper to adopt in New Zealand

Far-flung bores and wells were once exclusively serviced by rattly old generators and pumps that required supervision, fuel and usually earplugs. Substitute this approach for a solar unit which pumps when the sun shines and has panels no longer encumbered by consent costs, and it’s a definite win. This is doubly true when combined with another amendment to the building regulations, which allows ‘small pipe supporting structures’ and flexible water bladders up to 200,000 litres capacity to be installed with no building consent either.

For those who were on the fence as to whether solar adds up financially, this little extra cut to the cost of installation may be a push to act. For many, staring down the prospect of a long, hot summer again for 2021, the combination of savings suggested by solar pumps, pipes and flexible irrigation water storage will seem like some longoverdue common sense.

Who are you going to call? Thank the tank for clean water

by Andy Bryenton

Summer is all but here, and that means the season for our nation’s buy water carriers to save the day, bringing life-giving H2O to rural properties. The water they deliver is as pure as possible for better health, but the system it gets poured into deserves some attention at this critical time of year. An unsung hero of home cooking, sanitation and garden irrigation, the water tank, which supplies most rural Kiwi homes does its duty unthoughtof until trouble arises. A check of the system from top to bottom as water becomes a precious summertime commodity could save hassles and even illness further down the track. Experts

in the field suggest starting with the inputs. That usually means a trip to the roof, where rainwater is collected. Cleaning the roof itself of bird droppings, mould, leaf litter and debris is a good start when it comes to guaranteeing a healthy water supply. Gutters also tend to fill with undesirable filth; those in the know will not make the classic mistake of leaving them connected to the water tank when hosing and washing them down. The fitment of mesh or ‘bottle brush’ type inserts to banish leaves, and nest-building birds is also not a bad

idea for those who rely on rain on the roof to guarantee litres in the tank. Low ebb inside the tank itself is a good time to assess whether it needs a proper clean-out. Promoting professionalism in fencing

When embarking on any project, engaging a professional tends to provide added value. The Fencing Contractors Association of New Zealand is the industry body designated to promote high standards and best practice within the fencing industry, and it’s rolling out pathways to gain skills. Fencing Contractors NZ was started in February 2006. It aims to raise the profile and standards of the industry, growing the market for fencing contractors and associated trades, and ensuring good, timely advice. With more than 500 members, it’s a stronglymandated industry group. Recognising the need to encourage workers to the industry and upskill those within it, Fencing Contractors NZ is supporting members through the New Zealand Certificate in Fencing Level 3. A recognised NZQA qualification designed specifically for the fencing industry. This NZQA certificate is also one of the criteria required for the Certified Fencing Contractor certification. Aspirant students must demonstrate industry best practice, compliance and business prowess. To be awarded the certification, the applicant needs to have evidence of a minimum of three years in business, been awarded the NZQA National Certificate in Fencing Level 3. Hold a current First Aid certificate, and formulate a working health and safety plan. There’s also the requirement for an employment contract with staff, a signed declaration stating that they have a high regard for health and safety and employment issues, current public liability insurance, and three client testimonials. As you can see, it’s no easy task to rank among the best. Using a Certified Fencing Contractor gives

ADVERTORIAL

Coenzyme Q10 for energy Our mitochondria are our cell engines that take the energy from food and change this into the energy our bodies need. Free radicals can damage delicate cell structures causing less energy to be made. Some diseases can damage mitochondria. Studies show that Chronic Fatigue Syndrome weakens mitochondria resulting in significantly less energy than in healthy people. The result is always tiredness but other symptoms are determined by the type of disease. For example, in MS, mitochondrial changes occur, leading to nerve myelin damage. The first step to improve energy is to add coenzyme Q10. Be aware that most of the CoQ10 on the market is low-cost semi-synthetic material. I prefer high-grade, naturally fermented material. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as a good, cheap CoQ10. There are several reasons why some need extra coenzyme Q10. The most common is those taking statin cholesterol-lowering medication. The most common side effects are tiredness, mood issues and muscle weakness and pain. Mostly due to the fact they reduce circulating CoQ10. Interestingly, the maker of the topselling statin in the world holds patents

to combine CoQ10 with statins. They just have never made it. Perhaps this would reduce the financial viability of the drug? Some health problems, especially autoimmune disease, can increase demand for CoQ10. Additionally, our ability to produce sufficient CoQ10 diminishes with age causing tiredness. These help to increase energy output, support flagging energy processes and reduce free radical damage by actively targeting the free radicals that damage delicate energy systems. A combination of a good diet and these beneficial supplements can make a real difference in life quality for those with low energy. Most people feel a difference within a few months. Livestock export update The Ministry for Primary Industries has introduced new requirements for the safe transport of livestock by sea as a result of the tragic loss of the Gulf Livestock 1 in early September. It follows an independent review into the animal welfare assurances MPI receives from exporters, led by Mike Heron QC and supported by retired Rear Admiral Tony Parr. “It will introduce several additional requirements for the export of livestock until the incoming government can make decisions about a wider policy review of the trade,” says MPI director-general Ray Smith. “We have moved quickly following the Heron review to ensure no serious animal welfare issue for the 24,000 cows in pre-export quarantine, which would likely have to be slaughtered if interim measures weren’t put in place. “We want to ensure they are moved safely. It is important to note New Zealand does not export animals for slaughter but as breeding stock. The Heron review found New Zealand has robust checks and balances in place, to ensure the welfare of livestock transported by sea, but MPI can strengthen parts of the Animal Welfare Export Certificate process. “We are committed to ensuring crew and animals on livestock export boats are safe.” Cabinet has introduced a

conditional prohibition until November 30. “Immediate changes will apply for the conditional prohibition period. They include focussed maritime inspection of livestock carrier ships entering New Zealand to transport livestock by Maritime New Zealand as an additional safeguard. “Restricting stocking density on vessels to 90 per cent of current limits to match new Australian standards. Increased requirements for voyage reporting, including daily veterinary reports during voyages and increased minimum fodder requirements that ensure at least 20 per cent of feed is available for unplanned delays during the voyage.” Rear Admiral Tony Parr says livestock vessels operate according to international rules and certification, but additional New Zealand-based checks by Maritime NZ should provide extra safeguards for vessel safety. During the conditional prohibition period, MPI will have the discretion to consider applications for AWECs for livestock exports by sea. Approval for AWECs will not be granted for livestock shipments unless all requirements have been met.

Disposal deadline looming

OctOber 2020

Users of the heavily restricted herbicide paraquat are being reminded that they must dispose of any remaining stocks of four specific products by December 12 2020. The deadline affects Uniquat 250, Parable 250, Gramoxone Inteon and Preeglone Inteon, which can no longer be imported, manufactured, sold or used in New Zealand. These products must be disposed of in line with the requirements of the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) Disposal Notice. Paraquat is a broad-spectrum contact herbicide that has previously been used in the horticultural and agricultural sectors for clover seed, lucerne and kumara production. In late 2019, in addition to banning the four products, an EPA Decisionmaking Committee placed greater controls on paraquat. This restricts its future use to agricultural or biosecurity purposes only. Only two mixtures containing paraquat remain approved under the new rules. Maximum application rates were reduced, and buffer zones were revised. From 12 December 2020, interim labelling must be in place, as well as responsible handling

information. Labels must be updated on all containers by December 2021. “Paraquat was the first active ingredient on our priority chemicals list, announced in October 2018, to be reassessed,” says the EPA’s acting general manager of Hazardous Substances and New Organisms, Siobhan Quayle. The priority chemical list identifies the 39 substances we believe are most in need of review, drawn from a longlist of 700 chemicals we have screened. “We now have a dedicated team focussed on progressing these reviews, with several reassessments currently underway including for the log fumigant methyl bromide and the horticultural spray ingredient hydrogen cyanamide.”
