Changing attitudes toward pollution

The growing number of calls to the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council’s Pollution Hotline shows changing attitudes with the service receiving 20 per cent more calls over the past year, highlighting the community’s growing dissatisfaction with people who disrespect the environment.

The Pollution Hotline in 2017–18, received 1,095 calls compared with 915 in 2016–17. Of these 696 were for air complaints and 224 for surface water complaints. The 92 infringement notices issued in 2017–18 were a 67 per cent increase on the previous year, and 46 abatement notices were issued. The number of prosecutions remained the same at five, and Councillor Neil Kirton says this is a very useful report. “It is great to see honest commentary in the report, with continuing focus on the compliance operations of our councils, sectors and industry. Looking for rooks With the breeding season running from mid-August through to mid to late October, landowners will be seeing rooks building nests in trees on their properties as the birds are pairing off. Farmers and growers should be concerned about potential damage to pasture or crops the birds can cause. Rooks can wreck pasture or new crops, causing significant economic damage, while rookeries located near homesteads can be noisy and annoying. Rooks in large numbers should be reported to Hawke’s Bay Regional Council’s biosecurity team so they can be included in the annual helicopter aerial nest control programme which started at the end of September. “Landowners are starting to get in touch with us so we can get our contractor onto these pests, and reduce the damage the birds will do to crops and pasture,” says HBRC animal pest adviser, Dean Roughton. Rooks were introduced to New Zealand from Britain in 1870 as a way to control pest insects; however, the birds now threaten farms as they feed on newly sown crops including cereals, peas, maize and squash — often pulling young plants from the ground to get the seeds. The birds damage pasture by tearing it up when searching for grubs with some paddocks having to be completely resown and they are also known to destroy a whole season’s silage damaged by tearing holes in the plastic wrapping. Rooks can form large breeding colonies, called rookeries, of several

hundred birds with a typical rookery holding three to seven nests, equating to 3–35 birds. Adults live in and about the rookery from early September until mid-December. “The biosecurity team particularly want to hear from farmers who haven’t had rooks in their shelter belts or trees before, or for a long while, as new nests or rookeries need to be discouraged,” says Mr Roughton. “From late October onwards, farmers can still alert the
regional council if they see large numbers feeding on paddocks or young planted crops. Although the helicopter work will have been completed, another type of control programme can be put into action.” For more information go to hbrc.govt. nz search #rooks or to report sightings call Dean Roughton on 06 833 8088 mobile 027 476 6036 or email dean@ hbrc.govt.nz.

Sam and Sarah von Dadelszen’s property Hinerangi Station has been in the family for five generations, and it is a farm they are proud to continue advancing into the future.

n total, the family run 13,000 stock units on 1,260 hectares. It includes the home farm, two smaller properties, a run-off plus dairy farm running 370 dairy cows. “I grew up farming on a sheep and beef farm in Aria with three older brothers, and we all used horses. I had my first dog when I was 11 years old and loved working with my dad,” says Sarah. Sarah and Sam were both in rural banking and returned to work the farm with Sam’s father Dan handing over the reins during the 1990s. Dan is still an integral part of the business and frequently helps on the land. “The station has been in the family since 1901, and our children are the fifth generation to live here. It as an honour to be caring for it,” says Sarah. “Dan was awesome with the succession and transition. The family communication has been positive with no surprises for anyone, and that has
helped it work. We have three boys, and are planning future succession without putting pressure on them.” Sam and Sarah are constantly researching how to better the operation. “Back in history the farm was one paddock and now has a couple of hundred plus a reticulated water supply. We have three staff on the main farm plus managers on the dairy farm. “Sam’s great at helping young people grow their skills and see them develop. I don’t issue orders as one boss is enough — but I do keep an eye on health and safety.” Sarah utilised the Beef + Lamb New Zealand health and safety manual, which demystified things for them. “The regulations really are about being sensible. We see people scaring farmers to make health and safety plans for a price, but it is not necessary — we use the Beef + Lamb New Zealand manual. It is mostly recognising the

property winters stock. The cattle return to the dairy farm as they start calving, meaning less stress on everyone. We grow kale, oats and ryegrass and combine the run-off unit with lambs before shutting it up for silage. We have a closed system so know exactly what our stock are getting fed. “No ram lambs are allowed into our house for eating because the flavour and smell is too strong if killed at the wrong time. When you are putting meat out into the world, I believe ram is unsuitable.” Trading cattle are their buffer and they reduce down to seven kg/m per head a day if needed in dry summers. “Originally we jointly worked the farm until we started our family and then I became involved in things off-site, so I wouldn’t go stir crazy. Our children are my priority, and I cover our accounts and anything strategic. We are involved in community fundraising, sports and
committees — rural communities rely on dedicated people, and we are very lucky that I can be involved.” Sarah became a member of the East Coast Beef Council, chair of the National Beef Council, and an independent director of Young Farmers to name a few interests. “I am on the Agmardt board, and we give away $5 million a year for leadership development, in-market grants and ag innovation. Our byline is ‘Future Shapers’ to make New Zealand agriculture the best it can be to the world. There are online application forms at agmardt.org.nz. “I developed a governance career to keep busy and suggest mothers attend social groups and use daycares for time out to keep life moving. “I encourage people to stay in farming, we are screaming out for good workers, and junior shepherds can be paid $40-50k per year plus benefits.

Gary Bignell left school more than 30 years ago at 16 years old and completed his diploma in horticulture, specialising in stonefruit and working in a cherry orchard.

ince then, Gary and his wife Steph have spent the majority of their lives dedicated to producing and selling the freshest cherries direct to customers all over New Zealand. Recently they launched their own brand of cherry juice, which they created to share the health benefits of their muchloved fruit. “Dad grew up here in Blenheim and was always involved in cherries as that is where he first started work and he learnt on the job. We planted our own orchard here 10 years ago because it is a good growing region,” said their son and general manager, Cameron. “Cherries grow really well in Hawke’s Bay, Marlborough or Central Otago
due to the very cold winters and hot, dry summers — but there are a few orchards in other places. “We love working with the fruit because it is such a seasonal product, they are a flavoursome healthy treat that are only around for eight weeks of the year, and people enjoy giving and receiving them, especially as a Christmas gift.” The family grow approximately nine varieties of sweet cherries. “They all ripen at different times during the season. We get the best just before Christmas, and the late ones stretch our harvesting season out. They all have slightly different tastes, colours, sizes and shapes and it is very difficult

to tell the difference.” The family have planted nearly 20,000 trees on their 70 acre property. “It is a sizeable orchard and takes a lot of work to maintain. We follow strict pest control programmes that are used only when necessary to deter bugs,” says Cameron. “For years we noticed the health benefits of cherries at the start of each season because our sleeping patterns would significantly improve — but we would then slip back into restless nights when the season finished. “We could only make use of the fruit for those eight weeks of the year, and we wanted to work out a way to get people their cherry fix all year-round, so we started research to create the cherry juice.” It took the family three years to develop their product. Cameron’s siblings, Renee and Jacob, are also involved in the business, and they receive emails daily from customers saying they sleep better or get relief from gout and arthritis. It is used in cooking, pouring over ice cream, in salad dressings and as a health tonic. “It could have been perfected quicker if we added chemical agents and preservatives but we took the time to produce a 100 per cent natural product. We had great support from other New Zealand business owners who were pretty open with their advice. “Research shows that sweet cherries grown in New Zealand are a natural source of melatonin — more than 30 times higher than other varieties. This hormone is necessary for not just sending you to sleep, but also helping you stay asleep. “The fruit also contains extremely high levels of anthocyanins, which have powerful antioxidant and antiinflammatory properties. Michigan State University research found ‘the anthocyanins that make cherries red could also help relieve pain more effectively than aspirin’ and they may reduce osteoarthritis by working directly on inflammation, through the positive effects of anthocyanins.” A study by the Boston University Medical Centre found that ‘cherry intake
was associated with a 50 per cent lower risk of gout flares over a 48-hour period’ due to lowering uric acid levels. “Every weekend our family sell juice at different markets all over New Zealand and let people taste the product. Many of our customers, including farmers, have seen beneficial results with as little as 50ml of juice per night. For severe conditions, we recommend increasing the daily intake to 100ml and you can also just drink it every day. “We have 10 months between cherry seasons, and are constantly learning about other potential products. There are not many cherry by-products available and we source fruit from other growers. The more we can produce the better it is for all growers as we are helping each other. “Our parents’ passion has been amazing and to get the juice stable and as good as it is was a huge investment. It took a lot of foresight and vision, and they had the will to continue despite failed attempts, even when others said it wouldn’t work and they are wasting their time. “They deserve the success they are getting.”

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES
Passionate ABOUT PORK by Ayla Miller The Hawke’s Bay Pork Lords is the somewhat intriguing name for a group of agriculturallyminded individuals who get together to showcase and take pride in their animal rearing craft.
P
resident and co-founder, Ben Hindmarsh, describes the group as a food producing and growing group with a strong focus on socialising. “I grew up on a sheep and beef farm in Crownthorpe, and became interested in pigs at Lincoln University,” says Ben. “I was studying a BCom Ag and out of approximately 65 students was allocated to ‘the only’ pig farm for a year to complete my study. It was really funny at the time as I was thrown in the deep end and knew nothing about pigs — but I really enjoyed the experience and learnt a heck of a lot more than everybody else because we mostly came from beef or sheep farms. “We had a good crew of mates at Lincoln, and some people didn’t have stud stock or a way to express their skills — so we came up with the idea to use pigs as a lighthearted way of
staying part of the agricultural shows.” Ben was later shepherding in the South Island and discovered a boar breeders association and realised a lack of similar clubs for hobby breeders. After a while, he moved to the Hawke’s Bay and leased a farm — but the rural community still was missing that essential networking element. “It wasn’t hard to get people together for a gig in town, but for something farming related it was a bit more difficult,” he says. So Ben and his friend Max Tweedie established the Hawke’s Bay Pork Lords as a fun and social way to celebrate their craft. “We have a bit of support from young agriculturists, and we all enjoy raising and showing stock. We organise social gatherings and have guest speakers. Some people don’t realise showing isn’t

just for sheep and cattle; it involves all stock.” Ben says showing means they can represent themselves through a personal avenue without having to be commercial breeders.
“We can carry on presenting our farming identity and are proud of our products. We enjoy seeing the animals grow and producing good free-range pork. The thing with pigs is that they

are so easy to look after. All you need is a pen and a bit of grass — be it rural or urban. The key to successful pig rearing and finishing well is to feed regularly with high-quality food. “I feed my pigs twice a day with high protein pellets. They are an intelligent domestic animal and really good around people and have a huge amount of character and individual personalities.” Ben is a bull beef and sheep farmer and is raising seven pigs that are his hobby. “Pigs are great converters of food and to farm them well; you need to provide them with a concentrated protein diet and a small amount of sugar to finish off on. Pellets along with a small amount of scraps as a treat mean they don’t get fat. Keeping the carbs down helps because they don’t do a lot of walking around and ‘show’ judges like lean animals. “If you are on a lifestyle block a good breed is the large white or pinky. These are often crossed with the Duroc breed. When you get into competing you need a pedigree for performance, usually use a large black or white — but you need to be careful where you source them as some sold online don’t have the performance needed.” Ben says pigs are generally easy birthers and can have 12 piglets in a litter. “They need watching, but they are generally uneventful births as the piglets are so small. Once they are born, it is best to keep them in a pen until they grow and get used to feeding there and

so they know who is boss. Then it is good to give them access to a paddock so that they can get out into the grass — but they will remember where the pellets are so they easily go back into the pen at night. “Giving them scraps for treats makes them easy to control because they like a treat.”
He says people in the Pork Lords group all have the same positive view of the animals. “As a group, we welcome anyone interested in joining our club, townies, farmers or lifestyle blockers. We can help people with all the logistics of getting into pigs, and the projects help you learn — it is a really interesting hobby.”

M Bovis farms share similar soils by David Law — Forward Farming
The strongest evidence yet that Mycoplasma bovis does not flourish in well-balanced soil conditions has been confirmed at the farms that first tested positive for the disease. Farms belonging to the Van Leeuwen Dairy Group, which comprised 15,000 cows on a 4,133ha milking platform in South Canterbury, first tested positive for M bovis in July 2017, resulting in the culling of around 4,000 cows. The group was given the go-ahead to restock the affected farms after the compulsory stand-down period of 60 days but was warned by biological farming consultant David Law if the conditions in which the disease thrived were not rectified, it could reoccur. More than 100 soil tests were carried out across all van Leeuwen farms by Don Hart of Top Soils, and Law’s hypothesis was confirmed. “We found increasing evidence that the farms that had tested positive for M bovis all had the same characteristic — a low-pH soil, which is typically an imbalanced, minerally-depleted soil,” Law says. “In contrast, the soil tests taken on the farms clear of the disease showed a healthy pH of 6.3 — soil conditions M bovis doesn’t like. “This demonstrated a correlation between M bovis being present in imbalanced soils, and absent in healthy soils. The disease doesn’t live in the soil per se, but, as an anaerobic bacterium, it generally only
thrives in low-pH farm conditions.” As a result, the van Leeuwens have implemented short-and-long-term plans to rebalance the conditions on the affected farms to reduce the likelihood of M bovis returning. Law says his recommendations to Ministry for Primary Industries have not been actioned, leaving farmers in fear with no solution. Aad van Leeuwen agrees that MPI should have been more open-minded in their approach to finding a solution for farmers.
Law says with the valuable information gathered from Van Leeuwen Dairy Group, those involved in the wider working team are better able to help farmers directly rather than going through the government. “We welcome farmers to invite us to speak at discussion groups, where we can look at scenarios causing farmers anxiety, such as grazing young stock off-farm,” he says. “There are things farmers can do right now to greatly reduce the risk of M bovis flourishing on their farm; we are confident we can help.”

HORTICULTURE Choosing your crop species Deciding which plant species and cultivar to plant is an important decision and plays an essential role in maximising the life of a pasture. The amount of feed available for dairy cows, in turn, affects the amount of profit from every hectare of pasture sown so is an integral element of farming life. The best results come from matching the cultivars you choose to the farm system, climate, soils and pests. There is a range of available options for pastures and each come with their strengths and weaknesses. Chicory is a popular staple plant that can be incorporated into a rotational grazing system through its active growing months. The plant is a shortlived leafy herb with high feed value. Maize crop is a vital crop for many New Zealand dairy farmers and
represents a significant investment in time and resources. Fodder beet is another option and is a root crop with a high-yield potential. Kale has a deep root system and is normally used as a winter feed crop. Due to its deeper roots — it is very resilient through a drought so good for the drier parts of the country. Animals find plantain very palatable, which is a huge advantage. This crop establishes rapidly, is pest tolerant and has a high mineral content to enhance milk production. Swedes are a great winter feed crop as they have a low tolerance to drought and perform best in cooler, moist environments. Their
disadvantage is that they do not like waterlogging. Turnips are a fast-maturing single-graze crop and are often used to bridge the summer feed gap and
maintain milk production. Keeping these elements in mind, you will be sure to find a crop that will suit your situation and ensure the best return.

A team led by Plant & Food Research will undertake a pilot study this summer to determine if native birds can potentially function as nature’s pest control. “Birds could prove to be an excellent addition to the orchard ecosystem, particularly if they prefer to eat insect pests over insects that benefit growers,” said project leader at Plant & Food Research, Karen Mason. With the blessing of iwi, scientists will catch and release native birds such as tui, korimako — bellbird, piwakawaka — fantail, riro riro — grey warbler and tauhou — silvereye currently present in apple, wine grape, berry and plum orchards in Palmerston North, Levin and Ohau. The team will use ‘next-generation sequencing’, a DNA-based method, to identify insect DNA from collected avian faeces, which will allow them to understand which insects the birds favour in their diet. “The NGS technology will help us better understand what insects native birds like to eat and whether they should be encouraged or discouraged from the orchard environment. This new technology has advantages over traditional methods, offering a fast, accurate and relatively noninvasive approach.” The study, in collaboration with Dr Isabel Castro from Massey University, is part of a wider vision to incorporate
Karen Mason, project leader at Plant & Food Research
more native plants and animals into Aotearoa’s horticultural production system. It can potentially lead to a winwin situation for industry, biodiversity, sustainability and native taonga conservation, and it is hoped the project will provide some insight into another potential tool for growers to reduce chemical pesticides required to grow crops, supporting New Zealand to meet the requirements of export markets, retailers and consumers to minimise environmental impact of food. “Attracting birds to orchards may
also have secondary benefits — for example, some of our nectarivorous birds are highly territorial, so they may help keep other fruit-eating birds away,” said Ms Mason. “Our native species potentially have so much to offer. We should work with them to build a more sustainable future.” The team plan to expand this pilot study to look more in-depth at various native species and the services they could provide and establish collaborations with growers and Maori communities.

Real Hope For Long Term Back Pain Sufferers
After more than ten years in New Zealand, Teeter Hang-Ups have now gained a reputation for success with long-term sufferers of Back pain. Inversion New Zealand was started by Dave and Nancy Hare, Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from Degenerated Discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it. “To me surgery was never an option” he said “as long as I still could walk, there was hope”. Dave had tried everything; every time he was overseas he would search for anything that could possibly help. While on one of these overseas trips ten years ago, Dave discovered the Teeter Hang-Ups. “The first time I tried it, the pain disappeared and I was completely pain free for about 30 minutes, nothing had done that” he told me. Dave never believed it would fix him, “as specialists had told me it was irreversible, I now knew I had a place to go every time I wanted some serious relief”.
To Dave’s surprise the more he used the table the longer the pain stayed away, until after nearly three months he was completely pain free, “I couldn’t believe it’ he told me “I had spent large amounts of money on every form of treatment available and here
Inversion NZ Ltd 0800 62 62 83 www.inversionnz.co.nz
was something I had never heard of sorting it out for me in a very short period of time” It was then Dave decided to introduce Teeter into New Zealand and Inversion NZ was born.
Inversion helps to:
Over the years INZ have helped thousands of people get some serious relief and have seen results in not only backs, but necks, hips, knees, posture, circulation and lots more.
• Relieve Back Pain • Relieve Neck Pain • Relieve Muscle Tension • Stimulate Blood And Lymph Flow • Improve Posture • Increase Flexability
“We have testimonials from people with over fifty years of back problems and even have them in a number of schools in New Zealand for their special needs children” he told me, “the blood to the brain helps these kids and the results are excellent” What this means for the aging population is that it helps maintain the health of the brain as we all get older. Dave told me that he realised that, had he not tried the Teeter for himself he would still be suffering, “I would still be a miserable grumpy bugger, living with pain, that is why we do the shows, people need to try it for themselves” he told me “most people actually get off with the pain either gone or considerably less” he said “we let the tables do the talking”
Frank Harwood (84) of Turangi using his Teeter, Frank has been Inverting for over eight years and has found it keeps him young
IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW THE TEETER TABLE WORKS
Discs:
It uses gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, they rely on trans fer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to de-hydrate.
Posture: Poor
posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; similar to the wheels out of alignment on your car. Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory, as it constantly pulls the muscles back to where they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and eventually come back into alignment, using the table daily, does not allow the muscle memory to pull them back out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there.
De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the de-hydration causes degen eration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. It separates the nerve roots far more effectively and This is pure logic, if a machine is out of returns quality of life alignment it does not last long, the only between the body and a Muscles: A lot of pain is muscular, when difference muscles are stressed they become tight machine is that the body is constantly which restricts the flow of blood and lymph repairing itself, however if the wear and through the muscles so toxins build up, tear on the body is greater than the body’s to repair itself, it is a slow decline. Co2 and Lactic Acid. Traction opens up the ability Teeter slowly brings the body out of its muscles, Rhythmic Traction, is a gentle The decline and allows the body to repair itself, rocking motion that stimulates circulation resulting in a far healthier life. and encourages blood flow through the muscles, which clears the lactic acid into If you are serious about investing in your your lymph system where it stimulates health and really sorting your issues out, lymph flow and deals with it. Most people come see us at one of our local roadshows, with serious neck issues see a large you have nothing to lose and chances are, a improvement after only one treatment. lot to gain.
BACK or NECK PAIN? Here in New Zealand,
Dr Giresh Kanji, one of the countries most respected Pain Specialists completed a PhD on how humans experience pain and then researched lower back pain, writing "Fix Your Back" and then spent a few years researching neck pain, headache and migraine and wrote "Fix Your Neck Pain, Headache & Migraine", both books are in most bookstores. Dr Kanji discovered in the research that the disc is the most likely source of low back pain and Inversion showed the best results of all the trials conducted. Three studies showed a 60% reduction in pain and one showed a 75% reduction in surgery for people with disc prolapse. Dr Kanji endorses Inversion as the best method to manage back pain, he has personally been using the Teeter Inversion tables for his own low back pain, has Teeter Inversion tables at both of his clinics in Wellington (The Sports and Pain Clinic) and has had such success that he is now conducting the largest study in the World on Inversion Therapy. In his own words, "these things are gold and inversion should be a first line treatment for low back pain”. *Dr Kanji does not recieve royalties from the sale of Teeter Inversion Tables

Time to hop to spring chores outdoors by Andy Bryenton
There are some things, which America does better — and big horsepower, internal combustion machines fall into that category for many of us. Classics like the Mustang, the Corvette, the Challenger — and of course, another ‘muscle’ machine from 1969 — the Grasshopper mower. The team at the Moundridge, Kansas headquarters of this global company have been working on the best designs to cover a lot of turf with smooth efficiency since the days when bell bottoms were a fashion choice. Needless to say, there’s been a lot of change over the decades, culminating in a range of lawn care machines — which are truly second to none when it comes to power and solid build quality. It matters here in New Zealand because of the hard work we expect out of a mower. That is doubly true of those of us who have a large, lifestyle block, farm lawn, orchard or vineyard to take care of. The obvious appeal of a big zero-turn machine is that it is easy to manoeuvre and that it covers a lot of ground in a single sweep. Grasshopper has added comfort to the recipe, with ergonomic seating and easy to use controls. Their mid-mount deck range provides an easy line of sight down to the cutting deck and compact footprint, so the operator knows exactly where they are going. Their ever more powerful and versatile front mount deck machines place the blades to the fore — ideal for sneaking in under shelterbelts, bushes and low hanging trees with the added benefit of folding up at the flick of a switch for easy cleaning and maintenance. The options for customising a Grasshopper to your lawn care needs don’t stop there, though. It’s possible to spec out one of these powerful mowers with a vacuum assisted catcher to tackle

leaves as well as clippings. Rather than only offering petrol options, Grasshopper has stepped up to the plate with diesel models as well, especially handy for those who run a fleet of other machines (such as tractors and utes) on diesel fuel. They also offer dedicated rear discharge mowing decks for those who, for safety or convenience, don’t want to throw the clippings out the side. With a recent expansion to the range offering more compact and affordable front mount models, the Grasshopper company are living up to their catchphrase ‘IT’S SO MUCH MOWER’. Supplied by an established zeroturn mower importer, there’s an ever-
