Alister Body, retiring director

This year two farmer positions on the Board of Directors are available, along with one position on the DairyNZ Directors Remuneration Committee. Candidate nominations opened on Tuesday, August 15, and close 12noon Friday, September 8. Voting is held from late September. Electionz.com returning officer Anthony Morton says the first election for two directors is an opportunity for levy paying farmers to get more involved with the leadership of DairyNZ. “These roles are a chance to contribute to the whole dairy sector, supporting DairyNZ, its priorities and objectives. This is an important governance role which will help shape and influence the organisation’s direction for dairy farmers.” The board consists of five farmer-elected directors and three board-elected directors. This election for the two farmer directors comes as Alister Body and Jim van der Poel retire by rotation. Alister will not be standing for re-election.

DairyNZ’s second election is for a Directors Remuneration Committee member who would join two others in considering and recommending remuneration for directors each year. Chris Lewis is the retiring committee member. “All farmers paying a levy on milk solids to DairyNZ are eligible to stand for either election,” says Anthony. “If more than the required nominations are received, elections will be carried out using the STV (single transferable vote) voting method. Vote packs will be posted on September 25, with all votes weighted by annual milk solids production, for all registered DairyNZ levy payers.” An information pack outlining criteria and nomination requirements can be obtained from the returning officer — phone 0800 666 033 or online at www.electionz.com/dairynz. Election results will be announced at the DairyNZ Annual General Meeting in Rotorua on Wednesday, October 25.

Scholarships for development

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

Six ‘Plate to Pasture Youth Scholarships’ have been awarded to an exciting group of young people from around New Zealand who are developing their careers in the red meat, food and farming industries by Silver Fern Farms. “The talent emerging from the scholarship applications indicates a bright future for the broader red meat sector,” says Silver Fern Farms chief executive Dean Hamilton. “We were overwhelmed at receiving 79 applications. The standard and passion from the applicants exceeded all expectations when we launched the Plate to Pasture Youth Scholarships. Our panel certainly had a challenging job making their selections and we extend our thanks to all of the young people that took the time to apply and to the cooperative shareholders who supported their applications. “Silver Fern Farms is proud to be supporting the future of farming and the communities where we live and work.” As part of the process, applicants were asked to identify what they see as the biggest challenge or opportunity in the food industry and what they would do about it. “The winners delivered ideas on a vast range of industry issues. These included a fresh look at dealing with biosecurity challenges, the development of food technology processes to extend the shelf life and flavour of red meat, exploring ways to sustainably add value to farming businesses, selling the story of New Zealand’s natural ‘artisan agriculture’ to the world, as well as

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

A TRAVELLING

Adventure BY ANN MORGAN

An opportunity to experience the gypsy traveller lifestyle, with a retired dairy farmer and a genuine horse drawn cart, ‘just for a season’, is one not many people come across.

Y

akov Keinamann immigrated to New Zealand from Holland after the war as a child many years ago. “I was a dairy farmer and am now a horse trainer. Life changed for me one day when I was diagnosed with cancer. I recovered and decided I may have 7,000 days left in me and intend to live the best way I can. “My horse travelling adventure started as a bucket list — because I didn’t ‘kick the bucket’ — I still have the list and I focus on life as best I can. “I enjoy teaching people how to train horses — it is something a group of us have been doing because it is a dying art. Horse training is not rocket science, you just need to be shown. “After my recovery I decided to take a horse road trip and started with one

small horse. I am about to go on my sixth adventure and invite others to join me on my life-changing journey. “I tell people life is simple if you are a bit eccentric but for us it can also be very hard. We are like a boulder in the middle of a flowing river — the river flows around us and it is easy for the boulder to stay where it is. “We are the ones that make the colour in the tapestry of life. We dare to dream and make things happen and dare to live in a risk-type situation. We do this because the experience is worth it and we know such is the stuff of life. “My adventure grew so I needed bigger vehicles to carry all the camping gear, water and the essentials for the journeys. Each trip has difficulties because we are using 18th century

Yakov says travelling experiences with horse and cart develops personal growth and extends each person differently

technology in the 21st century. Road surfaces can be tricky at times but we have overcome that. You need to have a practical sense of how things work.” The team hook up the horses and carts and have a set plan to travel approximately 25 kilometres per day. Yakov says there is a lot of beautiful scenery and he generally scouts the area in advance so they know places to bypass. “If we come across a beautiful shangrila we stay a while. We do motivational presentations and talks at local schools or events in areas we visit. “We graze on a country roadside and stay on farms at times. People will drop off a bag of horse seed, or a plate of

scones and ask if they can bring their children and visit. I make hedgehog and clay for them — (chicken inside a mince ball stuffed with lemon), it is something different for them. I like to teach them that there is another world outside Facebook, and life is to be celebrated not wasted. “You discover a lot, that is why personal growth comes because you have extended yourself in situations. We lost all our belongings once because the pack horse walked behind the group and the bush lawyer plant (it hangs like a vine) was pulling our belongings out of the pack. Christmas came and we had noodles and baked beans for dinner. We got back from

washing up and the pigs had come and eaten all the rest of our food. You can’t buy these experiences — you have to walk them. “On this trip it would be great to entertain with a group of travellers and make a big display when we arrive in a town. I am hoping to attract people that can do this and present folk music and other things. It is a once in a lifetime experience. “I was farming for the biggest part of my life but my life changed. I relate well to farmers who have had trauma and large amounts of stress because I have walked the road myself. I like to inspire people and show them life is what you make it.

“When I became unwell, the water in the glass was exactly at the same level, but instead of saying the glass is half full, suddenly it was half empty. “I am a farmer and my message to farmers is at times you have to make some decisions and bite the bullet. Part of life is reinventing — when you can’t live as you are, look at how you are living and running your business, and reevaluate how you do things. “Life is about facing a situation and growing with it. “We can choose to stay a victim or make ourselves a victor.” For more information, and to join his next adventure in November, contact Yakov — phone 021 027 679 86.

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

THE VERSATILE ALPACA BY ANN MORGAN Pete and Tessa McKay live on their Hawke’s Bay property running their sheep, beef and growing herd of alpacas that they use for meat and fibre.

“O

ur interest with alpacas started with my dad buying a couple of pet wethers for our children for Christmas one year and now we have a herd of 300,” says Tessa. “There are two different types — the Suri that has long locks of dreadlock type fleece, is very silky with a sheen and is great for spinning, and the Huacaya — they are fluffy and look similar to a sheep’s blanket. They come in 23 natural colours and every shade in

between. Alpaca has a hollow fibre so is very insulative, light, warm and very low allergenic so people that can’t wear sheep’s wool can often wear alpaca. “Tessa was involved in viticulture and I was an orchardist. We bought and sold land and ended up with a farm and the alpacas started as a hobby. We have been farming for some 15 years now,” says Pete. “We wanted to make the business sustainable and were always asked at

cluster group meetings what we did with our fleece. At that stage we had about 20 alpacas so we decided to invest in a fibre mill.” The couple sourced a Belfast mini-mill from Prince Edward Island in Canada. “Tessa took to it like a duck to water — the technicians were amazed and said she puts out some of the nicest quality yarn and finest fleeces. We then decided to look into the meat side of things as in their original country everything is used just like we use sheep. They are not classed as a cute pet in places like Peru — they are stock, and the meat has been eaten for more than 4,000 years.” Pete says alpacas have a long lifespan so you can’t have them sitting around doing nothing if their fleece is not good quality. “Utilising the meat is a way to use animals excess to requirements. They are hardy animals and originate in the Andes and a large quantity of their meat is eaten in the Highlands of Peru and Chili — they use the hides similar to those in North America with buffalo, and us with sheep. “There is a lot of work going into improving genetics but the reality is besides shearing there has to be an end use as well. “We tan the hides and have made cushions and rugs and sell straight hides. It is a luxury fibre and children and animals love it. “Their health and body score is important and being a camelid, with padded feet with two toenails, they are very low impact on soil and browse like goats on a little bit of this and a little

The animals are raised on the farm for both meat and fibre bit of that.” “We sell meat on a fairly small scale to the restaurant trade. We don’t use young animals, we use the animals that are not useful for any other purpose. “They are induced ovulators so can be mated at any time of the year. If she sits she is not pregnant, and if she spits at him she probably is pregnant — it’s called a spit off. They have a 11-13 month gestation period and give birth during the day — if they labour at night you know you have a problem. They work on sight, smell and sound and are always humming to each other, even during birth the little one hums back and the babies grow very quickly. “Alpacas are easier than sheep. They don’t tend to have the same issues and

September 2017

Alpacas are peaceful animals with curious natures and a long lifespan

are quite clean. When they are on the shearing table we do their toenails, give minimal drench, and a five — in-one, and we do this going into winter as well.” Pete and Tessa also run ewes, cattle and rear calves. Alpacas are like sheep and are susceptible to facial eczema and staggers. “Alpacas mix well with cattle but we don’t mix them with sheep. They eat rough stuff and native grasses. They come from a low protein area originally

so keep it low even with pellets, and they love lucerne hay. “We process raw fibre into yarn for home knitters and we have machines to make rug yarn and chunky knitting fibre. Batts are made for felting, and rovings for hand spinners. We also have a dye bath, but most people want to keep the natural colours. “We love Alpacas — they are pretty peaceful animals. They very curious creatures and easy to halter train. They are great for small lifestyle blocks.”

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

it’s showtime... by Joanna Manson

B

This October’s 154th annual Hawke’s Bay Royal A&P show is testament to a society that began the event with a single paddock and now welcomes 30,000 visitors to its 42 hectare site.

rent Linn has been at the helm of the show for the last six years. Back in 1863 the first ever show was held in a little paddock on the outskirts of Havelock North. Brent says there was around 40 entries across the different classes and 400 people attended. Since then it’s grown steadily to a whopping 30,000 people with 4,500 — 5000 entries. “This will be my sixth show as general manager of the A&P society. The show is our flagship event but the society also runs four other events signalling the importance of the primary sector to the community. “The show is our shop front to tell that story but equally the other events

reflect the makeup of our primary industries and rural community here in Hawke’s Bay.” These extra events include the annual Hawke’s Bay A&P Bayleys Wine Awards which celebrates regional winemaking and the largest of it’s kind in the country; The Napier Port Primary Sector awards; National Horticultural Field Days and the Bostock New Zealand Edible Garden show. It’s current site in Hastings was bought in 1911 from the local Nelson family. “The Nelson’s had been synonymous with the meat industry in Hawke’s Bay so it was very fitting that the society was able to purchase this property from them and was able to incorporate the

The Hawke’s Bay A&P shows draws 4,500 – 5,000 class entries each year The fencing competition always draws a crowd homestead and land into a ready — made showgrounds.” The large site is also able to operate as venue for community events such as the Farmers Market and host a number of significant events such as Horse of the Year. As a not-for-profit society, the land is held for the benefit of its members. When an economic impact report took place some three years ago it was found that $15 million went back into Hastings and the region. The A&P show traditionally runs from on a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday with Friday being Hawke’s Bay Anniversary and a public holiday. This year, for the first time, a night

event on Thursday labelled a ‘show spectacular’ will take place. “Increasingly urban and rural families are time poor and the ability to get away as a family unit during the work day has changed over time. “When the show first started many of the farming families had help on their properties but now a lot of farming units are owned, managed and family operated. In the urban setting the ability to get away is limited by people’s ability to have choices or take leave.” Brent and the team saw the need to provide night time entertainment especially for those who were making a holiday of the show, which also includes a long weekend

with Labour Day on the Monday. “You can have all the fun of the show including food, shopping and amusements through until 10.30pm plus two hours of entertainment in the arena. Wednesday is compeitior only day with Thursday and Friday being public days. “We have so many different communities involved and each have their own hallmark event. For equestrian, it’s the FEI World Cup round on the Friday. “If you’re a cattleman you’ll be down in the cattle arena at 3pm for the meat and wool cup announcement. If you’re a family you’ll be over in animal world in the petting zoo and watching the Fonterra milking show.” Brent’s favourite part of the show is in three weeks time when the grounds are pristine condition ready for the rings

to go up and the trade exhibitors to come in. “The excitement is like Christmas Eve.” Due to the scale of the society’s events five full time staff are employed — another three join over the show as well as support from many volunteers. “Volunteers are the lifeblood of events like this — these are people passionate about the competition or an aspect of the show. It’s a noble calling and it must be treated that way if you’re expecting them to give up their valuable time, it requires passion.” “Events like this show have the opportunity to tell how good we are at producing safe food, ethically and compassionately — that’s what we want the legacy for the show to be.” The Royal Hawke’s Bay A&P show takes place on October 19 and 20.

New Zealanders have always used wood for our one and two storey homes. But now, architects can specify modern timber fabrication to previously impossible heights. Cross Laminated Timber (super plywood) can make equally strong construction as other traditional high-rise materials. Engineered wood is also lighter, quicker and quieter to build with, flexible in quakes, renewable, locally grown, fire resistant and locks up surplus atmospheric carbon. All we need now is for our government to recognise these qualities with a wood-encouragment construction policy.

The Agri-Women’s Development Trust and Ravensdown have joined forces to promote changes across the primary sector. Initiatives run by the trust include leadership and governance programmes that are open to women in the rural community. Lindy Nelson, executive director of the Agri-Women’s Development Trust, says picking strategic partners is not something the organisation takes lightly. “The key benefit for us in working with such a progressive company as Ravensdown is that we share the same aspirations and values,” she says. “Our purpose is to equip women with the skills and confidence to establish change in the primary sector, on the global stage. Our focus is on the planet, profit, people and progress. We see Ravensdown as a vital partner in this.” As farming faces disruptive trends and seeks to extend the sector’s social licence, effective leadership will be the key according to Tracey Paterson, Ravensdown’s general manager of Organisational Development. “Effective leadership is about diversity in decision-making and an important part of that is empowering women in the sector and improving their professional skills. This is why we chose to partner with such a visionary and progressive organisation as the Agri-Women’s Development Trust.

“We believe in enabling smarter farming and we know the people in our industry are at the core of this, so this partnership is a logical extension. It will benefit rural communities which in turn is better for New Zealand.” Lindy says that the Trust’s vision is to remove the need for AWDT. “In 30 years’ time, we may not need to exist if we can achieve 100 per cent capability and empowerment in

the sector. This is only possible with our strategic partners at our side — empowering Kiwi women to lead on the world stage in making meaningful change to economic, social and environmental progress.”

HORTICULTURE Irrigation Matters with Clem Powell

The mystery of engine driven pumps There is nothing new about engine driven pumps. One has only to visit the local A&P show to see various pumps driven by steam, petrol or diesel engines. Most of these pumps will be piston type for delivery of home or stock water and often require a lot of TLC not to mention strong arms for starting. This should not be a deterrent as technology has moved on.

Steam admittedly is almost unknown for irrigation pumping due to special skills and equipment. Petrol, except in very small systems is not favoured due to fuel costs and also lower BTU (British Thermal Units) which

For all crop, pasture and fertiliser spraying Tony Baxter Registered #1084, Phone: 027 544 7370

is how the energy in a fuel is measured. Diesel comes up on top in both these cases. Diesel really is best even for a small system. Take it from a motor mechanic that the extra spent on a diesel unit will more than pay off in the constant slog of irrigation pumping. Electricity certainly is favoured by many but also consider standing line charges and any diminishing of supply to other appliances such as a milking shed. The upgrade of a transformer and extra supply line may well make your eyes water. So, what to buy? Quality Irrigation companies will have access to correctly specified units and we welcome enquiries as a large part of our business at Irri-Max Ltd is in diesel pump units. Generally, buying something from a clearance sale or Trademe will not be the best option. In the first instance can you be sure the pump has been used for exactly the same duty as you intend. Did the original owner spec it correctly? Sellers on many websites often do not know what they are offering. The best they can say about their pump is they are supposed to have max flow of “X” and max pressure of “Y”. Pumps have a best efficiency point, normally at 2/3 max flow and this is

the point a pump technician will try to achieve, balanced with available power and speed from the diesel engine. As you can already appreciate, there are multiple options which make it more than a little tricky for the layman to get it right. Direct drive is preferable rather than belt due to difficulty with belt alignment and even tensioning, along with safety. Electric start is a must even on the small units as irrigation units have a tendency to run shy of fuel. Bleeding is much easier with electric start. Which brings me to the next issue; control Panels! In the next column we will cover some of the fascinating features available for diesel pump units.

Using chlorine dioxide fungicide

Botrytis turning into a severe infection by spreading and destroying the grape berries

A new fungicide that’s hard to resist.

New Zealand’s only stable Chlorine Dioxide Southwell is a new, broad-spectrum Fungicide made from stabilised Chlorine Dioxide. Chlorine Dioxide kills by oxidising both fungal and bacterial pathogens, even breaking down their protective bio-film. Here are the Southwell advantages: • Southwell will inactivate bacteria, fungal spores, moulds, bio-films and viruses, even at low concentrations. • Southwell is not subject to bacterial or fungal resistance • Southwell leaves no residue and may be applied right up to harvest.

Effective against Fire Blight

Effective against Powdery Mildew*

• Southwell kills over a wide pH range (2 – 11). • Southwell has the highest environmental rating: 9.1D • Southwell is extremely cost effective. CLO2. This would indicate most people walk past powdery mildew infected vines without realising its there. CLO2 was also used with success on heavy infestation of late season powdery by applying two applications three days apart. Chlorine dioxide solution is used to eradicate fungal disease, and so should be used as part of a programme that includes ‘protectant’ cover sprays. But where it can come into its own is late season with zero withholding and nil residues. As with the powdery control, botrytis incidence and severity was minimised in the blocks that had regular CLO2 applications through the season, even in blocks that are high cropping and traditionally have been susceptible to this disease. Now we are at the business end of the season and trying to mitigate the severe botrytis explosion primarily due to splitting. What we observed was “control” and reduced advancement of the infection. When botrytis attacks as intensely as it did we can’t expect to eradicate it with softer chemicals, but we can try to stem the flow, and this is what we observed.

RE SID UE

Of course the 2016-17 season was one to forget, with splitting and disease pressure rampant across most of the country, but it did provide a great opportunity to test the efficacy of chlorine dioxide in a pressure situation, and I’m pleased to report it stood up very well indeed. Stabilised CLO2 is registered as a broad spectrum fungicide with label claims for use against botrytis. Having said this, as the name ‘broad spectrum’ suggests it was found to be very effective against other pathogens, namely powdery mildew, even in the toughest of environments. “I must stress these were unofficial observations and formalised trials are to follow to substantiate these findings regarding efficacy against powdery mildew”. What was observed is that when applied at key times throughout the early part of the season dead and dying powdery mildew was identified on both canopy and berries as it turned black. This indicated that even though sulphur sprays were regularly applied there was still powdery present, just not visible, and materialised when eradicated by the

ZE RO

Having written an article at a similar time last year about the use of a stabilised chlorine dioxide (CLO2) in controlling fungal diseases in wine grapes, I thought it timely to give an update of how the product performed in a very challenging year.

Reports of blocks treated with CLO2 under heavy disease pressure showed a marked reduction of advancement (compared to unsprayed adjacent blocks), and allowed grapes to weather the storm and ultimately be harvested. It is about protecting the neighbouring berry from infection by destroying the inoculum transfer from the worst infected areas. All in all stabilised chlorine dioxide is shaping up to be an integral part of vineyard spray programmes, the key being to use it strategically and avoid a major battle at seasons end.

Biosecurity partnership continues to grow Summerfruit NZ and the Meat Industry Association of New Zealand have signed the Government Industry Agreement for Biosecurity Readiness and Response (GIA) Deed, joining the fight against pests and diseases that could significantly impact New Zealand’s economy. By signing the GIA Deed, Summerfruit NZ and MIA join the fifteen other industry sectors that have agreed to work with Government and each other, to combat the threat of an incursion of a pest or disease. Summerfruit NZ represents the collective interests of New Zealand’s apricot, cherry, nectarine, peach and plum growers. The value of the New Zealand summerfruit industry approached $140 million for 2016-17 and aims to reach its goal of being a $250 million industry by 2035. “Like all horticulture industries, Summerfruit NZ faces a large number of biosecurity threats that could damage the livelihoods of our growers,” says Tim Jones, Summerfruit NZ chair. “Biosecurity is an investment, not a cost. GIA creates a foundation for us to have a more informed interaction

Rock Picker NZ Importer & Operator

about the biosecurity system with MPI and other GIA industry partners. This includes ways biosecurity might be improved, making recommendations for improvements where required, planning for the risk of any biosecurity incursion and taking a lead role in the event of an incursion.” John Loughlin, MIA’s chair says biosecurity is fundamentally important to the New Zealand meat industry as it underpins our reputation for producing safe, high quality product. “A large-scale biosecurity incursion like foot and mouth disease could devastate the meat sector and seriously impact the wider New Zealand economy. “The recent Mycoplasma bovis incursion highlights how even a relatively unknown disease can have a big impact on the industry. Customers increasingly demand meat and pharmaceutical products that have a disease-free status – maintaining New Zealand’s unique international biosecurity status gives our industry a major advantage. “We look forward to working in partnership with Government and other industries to maintain and improve New Zealand’s biosecurity readiness and response.” GIA manager Steve Rich welcomed the partnership,

Steve Rich, GIA manager

saying that the new additions are a tangible demonstration of the future of biosecurity in New Zealand. “Here you have two very different sectors, but with common interests to achieve better biosecurity, joining together to deliver better outcomes with their peer industries and Government.” “MIA and Summerfruit NZ joining the GIA partnership means the vast majority of New Zealand’s land-based agriculture sectors are now represented in GIA, along with Government.”

The grand daddy of wool producers He’s inquisitive, enjoys a bit of a yarn, calls a spade a spade and thoroughly enjoys his vocation. Bruce Worsnop has spent decades combining his skill and knowledge with science so that “dagginess” is fast becoming history along with tremendous worm tolerance. Bruce, and son Patrick, operate a Lincoln ram stud and commercial flock of 2,000 purebred Lincoln ewes in conjunction with a beef finishing operation running 1,000/1,500 bulls in Central Hawkes Bay. Their Makaroro Road property, in the lee of the Ruahine Ranges covers some 1,900 acres, is 5kms long, 3kms wide with undulating hills and flat pasture. Elderly, native totaras dot the hilly pasture which at its summit, is 1036 feet (315 metres) gives 360 degree views of a verdant, seemingly unpopulated Central Hawke’s Bay. “We’ve been selecting our Lincoln Ram stud sires and the females we put into the stud flock for their tolerance to worms over the last 40 years.” Primary focus is wool production, and its heritability in the flock of the purchaser. As breeders, the last three decades have been successful because of the demand for lustrous wool, mohair blends and the hand knotted rug market. Bruce concentrated on wool, breeds and selects for it. Lincoln’s were the first English long wool breed to become established in New Zealand in the latter

part of the 1800’s. They are the heaviest wool producing breed known. More recently they have been used as a first crossing sire to lift wool production in the flock of the purchaser by around 20%. “All our wool is sold at auction with Segard Masurel having first refusal on every kilo they clip. The company has bought the bulk of the Lincoln “Kowhai” clip for over 40 years. The wool is often supplied for a process that blends the wool with mohair. ‘The price we receive varies from 2070 cents a kilo, and at times $2 premium over similar micron wools.” With his finger very much on the pulse of the many facets of the wool industry he is hopeful The Campaign for Wool launched by Prince Charles earlier this year will promote the benefits of wool and see increased demand. The campaign, which Bruce describes as “a breath of fresh air” is a great opportunity for wool growers to consolidate, unite and support the project. As for the future Bruce and Pat are still experimenting but are rather tight lipped. All Bruce will say is that his latest project involves lustrous wool and another labour saving trait. The Worsnop’s sell rams privately in November and December by private treaty.

Improving joint health (Part 1) The best part of what I do is to see improvements in those who have the courage to try something different. My client files are full of testimonies of those who have improved. Just this morning a client I have been helping for four months called for her monthly check in. When I first spoke with her she had a very sore hip and various muscle aches and pains. We made some changes to her diet and put her on a number of antiinflammatory and joint supporting supplements. As a result her hip has improved to the point she can walk again. Additionally she has much more energy and the vitamin D we added has helped a great deal with moods and general motivation. The body is quite miraculous. If you feed it the nutrients it really needs then dormant healing processes can then help restore body systems back towards normal. This is especially true for joints affected by osteoarthritis. In March I started helping a man in his 70s with painful arthritis in his knee, feet and hands especially his thumbs.

Worst of all was the joint where the thumb attaches to the wrist. This joint is highly susceptible to arthritis and it can be very disabling. When I spoke to him in June his feet and knees were much improved. He could now use stairs with ease. His hands and thumb have improved significantly and are still improving. While we made some dietary changes the main benefits came from increasing his Omega 3 fish oil to 6,000mg daily and adding a double dose of my joint formula. This meant he initially was taking 1,500mg of glucosamine, 1,500mg of super-high grade chondroitin and 200mg of my proprietary 95% curcumin (turmeric) extract. • Chondroitin and glucosamine are building blocks of cartilage. • Supplementation with correct levels can support healthy cartilage function and cartilage repair processes. • Curcumin from turmeric helps to balance joint immune function to support joint health. • Research suggests chondroitin is effective only at levels of over 700mg daily.

John Arts comments: “I formulated Bettaflex based on the latest research into natural compounds that can help with joint support and function. The normal dose is 2 capsules daily but I recommend a double dose for the first 1-2 bottles to saturate joint tissue.” (John Arts, Founder Abundant Health Ltd)

RURAL WHEELS

Gunning for the crown by Andy Bryenton

When it comes to modern utes, many buyers entering the market feel they have a choice between two top contenders. There’s the Ford Ranger, riding high on years of awards and sales figures, and the Toyota Hilux, the once-all-powerful monarch of the rural roads, still slugging in a close second place. Now there’s a challenger so far out of left field it’s almost tempting to use a metaphor from recent Kiwi politics. The new face of LDV has been its range of big, dependable work vans for some time now, and they’ve gained traction with tradies and fleets in a big way. Now the company is bursting into the ute market with a four-wheel drive double cab that both looks the part, and carries a very affordable price tag. It’s called the T60, and it’s shaking up a sector already graced with new low-cost utes by Mahindra, Great Wall and Foton. T60 was first unveiled to the public during the National Feildays in June this year. Sales and marketing manager Warren Willmot says: “Feedback from the public display at Mystery Creek was incredible. The interest in this vehicle has been remarkable and now the customers who have signed up and been waiting for their T60s to arrive have the added bonus of the five year, 130,000km warranty.” LDV — manufactured by the immense SAIC autos company, China’s largest — plan to offer the T60 with both diesel and petrol engines, two suspension heights, three gearbox options and even the ability to switch from ‘eco’ fuel saving mode to ‘power’ mode with the push of a button. Stylistically, the T60 looks aggressive and sharp, with the big chromed grille and chunky roll bars we’ve come to

The new LDV T60 builds on the strong reputation LDV’s vans have established in the local market

recognise as many new utes’ homage to the F150 out of America. That’s no bad thing — the big Ford sells a unit nearly every five seconds, and is going strong after decades. LDV entered the market with a lot to prove, and their vans, people movers and transporters have shown that they can tango with the best. It’s a bold move to step right into

the tough ute market and even tougher to contest the crown held so tenaciously by Ford.

But for the business or fleet buyer looking for value as well as practicality, the T60 may prove irresistible.
