Aquaculture New Zealand represents the Greenshell mussel, King salmon and Pacific oyster industries. It consulted with its members and agreed to join the GIA for Biosecurity Readiness and Response. The final step in the process is the signing of the GIA Deed, which occurred at the annual New Zealand aquaculture conference in Blenheim, in a ceremony attended by senior representatives of the aquaculture industry, and Ray Smith, director-general of MPI. Aquaculture joins the 23 other industry sectors that have agreed to work with government, and each other, to deal with pests or pathogens specific to their primary industry sectors. It includes the majority of the horticultural and livestock sectors, representing some $40b of commercial activity across NZ. Aquaculture New Zealand chair Bruce Hearn says joining GIA is a positive step for the industry. “Our pristine environment and innovative people combine to make New Zealand one of the world’s great aquaculture producers, renowned for some of the highest quality seafood products available. It is critical we take all possible steps to protect this unique advantage. Joining GIA furthers this goal by ensuring aquaculture producers have
an important seat around the table when decisions are being made on biosecurity issues. “By working together, we will give ourselves the best opportunity to deliver better biosecurity outcomes. The aquaculture industry employs over 3,000 people in New Zealand and generates over $600m in domestic and international sales and, as such, it is vital we do everything we can to protect the livelihood of our members. Jen Scoular, GIA’s Governance Group chair, welcomed the arrival of Aquaculture NZ into the GIA partnership, describing it as a significant addition. “It is really important to have such a key sector represented in GIA. We now have every major primary industry group sitting around the decisionmaking table with government, making the GIA partnership truly representative of the primary sector. It will allow for better industry skills and information sharing and a coordinated approach to biosecurity. “GIA provides a unique forum where the Crown and the broad range of primary sector industries can work together to deliver better biosecurity. We look forward to working in partnership together to deliver better biosecurity.” To find out more about GIA visit gia.org.nz.

The New Zealand Winegrowers has appointed two new general manager positions with GM Marketing, Charlotte Read and GM Sustainability, Ed Massey. Wine is New Zealand’s sixth-largest export good with the product being exported to more than 100 countries. New Zealand wine exports are currently valued at $1.83 billion. Ms Read joins New Zealand Winegrowers on Tuesday, October 22 with a wealth of New Zealand wine industry knowledge, after 10 years as the Export Market manager for Villa Maria Estate, based in both Europe and China. Her latest role was customer manager at NZTE, where she managed a portfolio of high calibre companies exporting globally. Her love for the wine industry started young, growing up on a vineyard in the Hawke’s Bay. “I am really excited about joining the team at New Zealand Winegrowers and continuing to strengthen the reputation of our incredible wines on the international stage. The real clincher for me, is my love for the wine industry, which has been a part of me since my upbringing on a vineyard in Hawke’s Bay,” says Charlotte. “My past twenty years of global marketing, project management and sales experience are all so relevant for me to hit the ground running to deliver a world-class, innovative marketing effort for our nation’s wine industry.” The newly created GM Sustainability role, which Mr Massey will fill has the key focus of ensuring sustainability is embedded throughout all activities of New Zealand Winegrowers. A utopia began beetopia by Ann van Engelen Grass Esposti fell in love with bees the moment she opened a beehive some seven years ago and appreciates honey of all types that is available from the Deep South to the Far North.
“I
had a utopia moment when I saw these hard-working insects in their hive and was surprised how serene and calm they were,” says Grass. Grass and her husband Anthony opened Beetopia NZ Ltd in July 2018 with daughter Michelle and the support of Francis and James of F&J Honey NZ. “When we relocated from Italy to New Zealand, we received the wonderful

environment. We feel inspired children are the future of Aotearoa. “Our Airbnb experience is unique and includes learning about bees and tasting 30 different varieties of honey from the Far North to the deep South, Great Barrier and Niue. You get to taste what clover tastes like throughout New Zealand. It does not always have to be about manuka. There are so many other delicious types of honey that need more of our attention — in fact, our tasting includes rewarewa, pohutukawa, kamahi, beechwood and kanuka. “Thanks to Peter McNab, president of Rodney Bee Club, and Wilf Berger, our apiary officer, I became a founding member of Warkworth Beekeepers Society. Working hands-on with an experienced beekeeper builds confidence and is fundamental when you are a beginner.” Grass says depending on the strength of a hive it can house between 10,000 to 80,000 bees in spring and summer. During autumn the numbers reduce and in winter they can drop back to 10,000. “A strong hive depends on a good queen and good hive management. In New Zealand, we have the active and lively Carniolan black honey bee and the Italian strain, which is an amber colour and more docile to work with. All bees are hard-working, but in winter depending on external temperatures and weather conditions they start work later in the day when it is warmer. They forage for floral resources such as gorse, which is extremely high in pollen. “The foragers explore continuously looking for nectar and pollen and often
die of exhaustion. Nectar is released from flowers when it is above 20 degrees, but this year winter was mild, so the nectar has flowed, and we are getting honey. The foragers cast their bounty back to the nurse bees who store it and feed the growing larvae and brood — thus the cycle continues. “The queen bee’s scent determines social behaviour, maintenance of the hive, swarming, mating behaviour, inhibition of ovary development in worker bees, communication, orientation and defence and much more. The drones are male bees, and their primary function is to mate with virgin queens of other hives, they are only found in hives in spring and summer and do not have a stinger. The worker bees are females that lack reproductive capacity and have many roles within the hive — cleaning, making wax, nursery duties, water gatherers, pollen and nectar foragers and guarding the hive. “Beetopia has held numerous beginner beekeeping courses at our educational centre and training apiary where lessons are hands-on inside a hive. My four-year-old grandson is my youngest beekeeper, and a 75-yearold was the eldest I have taught. I do not let people invest in a hive before they feel confident working with and understanding bees and realising it is like having another family member on board. “It is definitely the best hobby I have ever had, and people everywhere can have bees. It is exciting when you finally reach your utopia, and my utopia is bees.”

VALUING WORKING DOGS by Ann van Engelen
Bex Hughes-Baynes is one of New Zealand’s winning dog trialists, a hunter and a shepherd, who has spent many hours upskilling her dog handling abilities.
“I
grew up in Waverley on a dairy grazing and sheep and beef unit. I always had a love for animals and was involved in horse and hound hunting with my mum when I was younger,” says Bex. “I am now on horseback every day as a shepherd mustering sheep, docking and any other farm work that comes my way.” Bex generally works between Tukemokihi and Paparatu Stations with other clients in between assignments. “Most places I work are big sheep and beef farms. At present, I am helping with docking. I have been shepherding since I was 19 years old and ended up in Gisborne where I met my partner
David Scragg, he manages Tukemokihi Station. I got into dog trialling when I started working at Paparatu as we would go to our friend Allen Irwin’s and train our dogs with him. Being involved with dog trials is a good way to upskill yourself and learn from the older guys. I love it as it is a time to socialise and see what new dogs are out there. Every dog is different and training them isn’t really hard, you just need to spend a lot of time with them. It is great to see what other people do and you take what you learn and turn it into your own style.” Bex says all of her dogs are very well looked after with each having their own beds and coats. “Ultimately treating my dogs with respect and spoiling them

saves me money, and I get more years out of them. They are my work tools, and work extremely hard and deserve nothing but the best. I always have pups coming and going as I breed and rear a lot. I pick what I think is going to be the best that will suit me. “Younger people would find the dog trials really interesting, and we need more people to come through and train as judges, and helpers because if they don’t turn up the sport will die out. These days we are so lucky because in the past no one would pass on their training information. Now if you are willing to learn — people are more than happy to help. “It is about having good dogs for work. Good dogs are important for me, as my income relies on them. You are paid to do a job mustering, and if you can’t do it efficiently, people won’t get you back.
“Training a dog is like breaking in a horse. You need to be able to direct each dog and have it listen to you. It takes many hours and travelling to get advice, but it is worth it, and I do it because I love them and my job being outside every day. “Mustering other people’s stock is a huge responsibility, and they need to be able to trust their staff. I bring the stock down on horseback, and depending what time of year it is, depends on the chores. With docking, I transfer animals from paddocks to the required yards, from one beat to the next. Some stations are huge, so you need to be organised and confident. “I have been shepherding for 11 years and confidence comes with experience. You need to back yourself because you are more capable than you think.” Bex placed second in the New Zealand Dog Trials in 2018, and sixth

Bex Hughes-Baynes, Jo Waugh and Steph Tweed are all successful dog trial place-getters and believe it is a rewarding sport for females to participate in
in the South Island Championships. “I won the first round and then got into a run-off with contestants from across the South Island. I run heading dogs, but I enjoy the huntaways a lot more due to the countryside I work on. In the last 12 months, the girls within dog trialling have done phenomenally well. “In 2018, when I placed second in the country — it was the highest placing a woman ever got. “This year myself and two other women were in the run-off. Out of 300 competitors, there were only 10 women, and my friend Jo Waugh won that round in the South Island. “In the New Zealand competition, Steph Tweed won. It is a good sport that girls are excelling at and the best part is we are all very good friends, and that makes it extra special.”

PROGRESSING THE ELECTRIC FENCE by Ann van Engelen Alex Macmillan is a beef cattle farmer in Pipiwai and to help life on-farm be easier he has developed a gamechanging device for electric tape gateways.
“I
am appreciative of the companies that created the current designs of gate tape handles, but they eventually fail for a number of reasons. I always felt there had to be a better way to operate gateways that are controlled by electric tapes,” says Alex. “Rather than complaining, I designed a bullet-proof model — based on my observations over the decades of my farming career to helping advance the industry. My sturdy gateway hinge spring uses marine-grade stainless steel, which won’t rust and is the first of its kind in New Zealand. I officially launched my product at the National Fieldays in June. “The product has a positive environmental impact by taking plastic and degrading wire springs out of the equation. The more volume of the invention we get on farms to displace
the traditional option means more positive results.” The 81-year-old was a member of NZ Young Farmers in the 1950s and has decided to donate a portion of all sale proceeds to the organisation. “In the early 1960s, I got a job working for the Milk Marketing Board in the United Kingdom as an artificial insemination technician and was the youngest technician they ever employed. When I returned home, I spent more than four decades working for the Livestock Improvement Corporation as an AI technician. One of my biggest days involved inseminating cows in 29 herds, and I travelled more than 209km that day. “I was a former Patumahoe Young Farmers club member, and the thing I remember most fondly were the interclub debates. There was some

fierce competition in our area. It is a great way to expand your knowledge, share ideas and socialise. We enjoyed getting off-farm for various activities and knew our way around a dance floor regularly attending Saturday night dances in local halls. It was fun, and people need to do it now days too for time out and get away from it all. “I want to support NZ Young Farmers and help the next generation reach their goals. The organisation helps to nurture young people in primary industries, and I personally received immense benefits from being a member when I was young. It was one of the best ways to make friends. “My devices will be installed in the near future at the Auckland dairy farm gifted to NZ Young Farmers by the late Donald Pearson. They will help with sustainability in the long term. We have also had considerable interest from farmers in coastal areas who are tired of replacing their current gate components every couple of years due to rust.” The Lomacs gateway hinge spring will solve this problem and other issues. Marketed by Lomacs New Zealand, it has generated interest from the Australian states of Tasmania and Victoria. “Dad’s invention is permanently mounted on a post and all of the componentry, apart from the plastic anchor, is marine-grade stainless steel. It should last a lifetime and save money, frustration and broken gateways along the way,” said Alex’s son Michael Macmillan, a director of Lomacs New Zealand.

Alex is now 81 years old and his granddaughter Madison often helps him around the farm learning from him along the way “He has dedicated his life to the agriculture sector, and this product is different from anything else on the market. It is a significant cost when every three to four years you are replacing the current product. He set out to design something that would last for decades and given there is no plastic in the mechanism — it is more environmentally friendly. The swivel design allows it to move from side to

side — essentially eliminating damage. It gives a consistent spring compression on the tape attachment every time so it shouldn’t stretch beyond the barrel. “The barrel is protected from contamination such as mud, organic matter and water and being permanently attached removes the risk of someone running over the unit. More innovations are in the pipeline, and in time may enhance this invention because dad
wants to give farmers access to a quality product. The exciting thing is that the unit can be applied to sectors outside of farming, including the marine industry. More information can be found on our lomacs.nz website. Dad’s invention has been selected as a finalist in the NZ Best Design Awards, and I am looking forward to hitting the road to attend NZYF club meetings to discuss and promote my father’s invention.”

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES
Qualifying rounds begin The first qualifying rounds for the next FMG Young Farmer of the Year have kicked off with 18 district contests to be held across the country before Christmas. The events will help find 56 competitors who will clash in seven FMG Young Farmer of the Year regional finals early next year. “I have entered to test my skills and knowledge and to meet other young farmers,” said Lincoln Young Farmers member Tom Adkins. The 20-year-old, who was raised on a sheep and beef farm near Whanganui, is studying a diploma in farm management at Lincoln University. He has landed a job working as a shepherd at Te Mania Angus in North Canterbury this summer. Tom has signed up for the district contest at Springston, southwest of Christchurch, on October 19 and he will face off against 23-year-old Wairarapa-born Sarah Whiteman, who is an assistant cereal breeder at PGG Wrightson Seeds. She helps develop new varieties of wheat and barley, and it is her second time entering the contest. “Last year I entered in the ‘have a go’ category, which enables people to complete the modules in pairs,” said Sarah.
“It was heaps of fun and a great confidence booster. I don’t have a farming background, and it helped me realise I actually know what I am doing. I have entered to challenge myself, learn new things and meet people from other NZ Young Farmers clubs.” The events are designed to test the practical and theoretical skills of competitors. “Everyone has their own reason for entering the district contests,” said Danielle Holland from NZ Young Farmers. “It is a chance for members to benchmark themselves, have fun, and importantly to qualify for the next stage of the contest.” The FMG Young Farmer of the Year is an iconic contest, which began in 1969 and showcases the country’s food and fibre sector. The event is supported by FMG, Ravensdown, Honda, WorkSafe, STIHL, Lincoln University, Massey University, Southfuels/Northfuels, Betacraft and New Holland. More details can be found at fmgyoungfarmercontest.co.nz.
The dates of each district contest are: Northern: November 9 – Kaikohe, November 30 – Waimauku Waikato/Bay of Plenty: November 16 – Reporoa, November 23 – Huntly, November 23 – Morrinsville, and November 30 – Piopio. ADVERTORIAL
A pain in the … by John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv.Dip.Nut.Med)
The best part of what I do is to hear back from clients who have less pain and more mobility. If you are in pain, the first step should be a visit to your health practitioner for an accurate diagnosis. For the next few editions, we will look at the most common causes of pain and the measures we can take to help. In all cases, these measures are designed to help restore your body’s natural healing processes, which can be greatly affected by disease. Most pain is either caused or worsened by tissue inflammation. For example, in osteoarthritis, the immune system response to cartilage loss is inflammation. It can cause fluid accumulation, swelling, loss of function and invariably pain. An anti-inflammator y diet combined with well-formulated supplements can help. My preference is to have equal amounts of chondroitin and glucosamine with a potent curcumin (turmeric) extract and solid doses of fish oils. Of these chondroitin, sulphate is the most important as it helps support several joint healing processes damaged by arthritis. In most cases, I start with 1,600mg of chondroitin and glucosamine plus
curcumin to help improve cartilage function. Chondroitin is so effective that it is now available in Europe on prescription. During the past six months, I have been helping a man in his 70s with long-term knee osteoarthritis with some damage from his rugby years. He was really struggling with pain and mobility and in his own words is now 95% better. All he has now is a few niggles. The key is to use multiple measures that target the processes that help maintain healthy joints. The answer is not diet or supplements. The answer is to stimulate dormant healing processes overwhelmed by degenerative changes to joints. Your body does the rest. Get your waste away Avoiding system failure Septic tanks prevent the suspended solids in household effluent from entering the disposal system. The escape of excessive suspended solids from a septic tank causes clogging of the disposal system and is the most common cause of early failure. There are three main processes that take place in the septic tank: 1. The heavier, solid particles settle to the bottom of the tank forming a sludge layer. 2. Lighter materials such as fat and grease float to the surface forming a scum layer. 3. Within the septic tank, there is little or no oxygen, and anaerobic bacteria (bugs that can live without oxygen) break down some of the solids. This helps to reduce the build-up of sludge in the tank. The effluent that leaves a welloperating septic tank contains only the smaller particles that are less likely to rapidly clog the disposal system. An effluent filter will allow only the smaller solids to enter your disposal system and is a relatively cheap way to significantly reduce the possibility of the early failure of your disposal system. Most modern septic tanks should have a filter installed on their outlet. With very little modification, effluent filters can be installed on the outlets of older septic tanks. When the effluent leaves the tank, it is only partially treated.
The natural processes occurring within the soils below the disposal system carry out the final treatment. The type and size of the disposal system used are normally determined by the site conditions, groundwater level and soil type. Soakage trench and bed systems are the most common type of effluent disposal systems used in association with a septic tank. Perforated pipes, or in older systems field tiles, are laid in shallow trenches filled with gravel. Effluent flows out of the holes in the pipe and soaks into the surrounding soil. Beds are wider and shallower than normal trenches, but should only be used where it is not possible to use trenches. Every trench or bed system that has more than one pipe for effluent disposal will have a distribution box for even distribution. It is important that all the outlets from the distribution box to the disposal pipes are at the same level. Even a small difference can result in the failure of a trench or bed due to overloading. Evapo-Transpiration Seepage Systems
are normally installed where soils have poor soakage and are designed to use both soil soakage and selected plants for effluent disposal. The plants must like wet feet as they take up some of the effluents and use the nutrients to grow while the liquid
evaporates through their leaves. The disposal area needs to be properly planted to prevent effluent from running off during wet periods and causing a problem. A list of recommended plants can be obtained from your local council.

Get your waste away Upgrading septic standards If you live in the country, coastal area or a small rural town, your household effluent including toilet, shower, kitchen and laundry wastewater, probably drains into an on-site treatment system, and from there into the ground somewhere in your backyard. The standard on-site household effluent system has two parts — treatment and disposal. Treatment systems commonly used for household effluent include septic tanks and a group of treatment plants known as Aerated Wastewater Treatment Systems (AWTS). Treatment plants that use sand and textile filters to provide advanced treatment of effluent are also becoming increasingly popular. When the effluent leaves a treatment system, it is only partially treated. Final treatment is carried out by the bacteria that are in the soil below the effluent disposal system. The main purpose of the disposal system is to keep the effluent in the soil within the disposal area, so this final treatment happens. A variety of disposal systems are available, with each being designed
to suit different site conditions and soil types. The correct operation and continued maintenance of your on-site system are very important. If neglected, it can pollute groundwater and streams, puts you and your neighbours’ health at risk, and these issues can be expensive to fix. Information is available on your local council website outlining the way the various systems work, what is required to keep them operating effectively, and how to look after your effluent treatment and disposal system. Guidelines on what is required to keep them operating effectively can also be found. Information is available on topics such as discharges to land and water, on-site domestic wastewater discharges, wastewater network and treatment plant
THE SHORT DROP LIMITED
discharges, production land discharges, stormwater discharges, industrial and trade wastewater discharges. Each council has its own rules and guidelines, and it is important to note that you must ensure your septic system
meets the requirements specific for the region it is in. Each district council may have their own bylaws regarding on-site sewage systems and property owners need to be aware of these requirements.

SORTED FOR SUMMER Act now with maintenance With the weather clearing and summer on the way, now is the time to check what maintenance and repairs need to be dealt with in the family home and around the farm. With the workload many tradespeople have, it is important to book them in advance to ensure the projects you require to be done can be completed in sufficient time. If you leave urgent requests to the last minute, you may find it difficult to find a tradesperson available. Washing down the outside of your house will help not just maintain a fresh well cared for look, but it will also present the opportunity to check if any weatherboards or bricks need replacing. Consulting a qualified tradesperson to check over your roof is a good idea as they will see if fixings need reinstating, gutters and spoutings are clear of debris and check for broken tiles and roofing iron, which are something that allows a lot of water into your ceiling. Your local fencing contractor can check your fencing, particularly boundary fences. Every property owner needs to ensure fencing is up to standard as it is their responsibility if the stock gets onto the road and cause an accident or damage other property. The same

SORTED FOR SUMMER Caring for your assets From cleaning the gutters to touching up paint in the lounge, a task checklist will help you stay on top of your home and property maintenance throughout the year. Taking the time to make repairs to decks and fences, whether it be painting or cleaning, will help not just with the appearance of your property but also the longevity of your belongings. Make sure a good clean and light sand is done prior to painting or varnishing. Now with winter over it is a good time to plan any home improvements you may be considering. Get in early to lock in contractors and start researching your options for new outdoor entertaining areas if you are trying to have them completed in time for Christmas entertaining. Painting the outside, or inside of your house can look like a straight-forward job but can end up a daunting task for some. A professional can save time and frustration, and they should take the opportunity to patch up any holes or scratches in your walls, leaving you with a new look. Now is also a good time to fix squeaking hinges by applying oil or
lubricant before summer is here. While you are tackling small projects around the home, check your smoke alarms and replace batteries if needed and get appliances checked that have run all winter. Gas fires, DVS systems, heat pumps and chimneys should all be checked or cleaned annually. Paddocks are not the only area that needs care, spraying for weeds and applying the correct fertiliser to your lawn makes a big difference to the area around your personal space. Don’t forget, checking your water tanks are clean, and there are no leaks will save a lot of summer stress. Rid your outdoor areas of the moss and lichen that have built-up during the winter months with the help of your trusty water blaster. Ensure you know how to safely work any equipment you are using. When water blasting, soften surfaces with the right spray before you scrub, hose or pressure-blast them. Again,
getting in the experts will get the job done in no time, freeing you up for other important farming chores or better still,
giving you time to have a break away while someone else takes care of these small but important projects.

HORTICULTURE Goodbye winter — hello asparagus Every September, many winter-weary shoppers across the country are pleased to see asparagus, one of the first signs of spring hit the supermarket shelves. Along with daffodils, the country’s asparagus harvest is a welcome signal of warmer days to come and this year is no exception with a bumper harvest expected. “Around 40 growers spread throughout the country are looking forward to bringing their 2019 crop to market,” says chair of the NZ Asparagus Council, Mike Arnold. “Fresh New Zealand asparagus is in high demand with about 95 per cent sold to the local market and the remainder exported to international markets such as Japan and Singapore. “These tasty little spears might be touted as the latest superfood, but their reputation as a health powerhouse is centuries old. Cultivated by early civilisations, asparagus was a favourite
of Julius Caesar among many others, famed not only for its flavour but also its rumoured health benefits, particularly as an aphrodisiac.” While modern science hasn’t proven this claim to be the ‘Viagra of vegetables’, David Smith, chairperson of The 5+ A Day Charitable Trust, says contemporary studies of the nutritional content of asparagus point to a much broader array of dietary benefits. “Asparagus is a great source of dietary fibre and folate, a source of a range of vitamins such as niacin, thiamin, riboflavin, vitamins B6, C and K, and it contains a significant amount of potassium,” says Mr Smith. “Add to that a powerful detoxifying compound that can help to break down carcinogens and recent research

suggesting asparagus could help control type-2 diabetes by regulating blood sugar levels and increasing insulin — it becomes clear that asparagus is a must for any healthy diet. “We should all be eating more vegetables, and what more enjoyable way to get some greens into your daily routine than with a serving of asparagus. Serve up this healthy and delicious treat without the fuss. Asparagus is so easy and quick to prepare: lightly steam it and serve with a poached egg and parmesan, pan-fry it in olive oil or butter and garlic, roast it with tomatoes and grill on the BBQ. These mighty little spears also contain enzymes that break down alcohol. With a limited season, fresh asparagus is available from September to December. Make the most of this window and kickstart your summer by adding some green David Smith, chairperson of The 5+ A Day Charitable Trust goodness into your diet. Eating seasonal produce is an affordable and of a variety of fresh fruit and vegetables tasty way to make sure you and your every day — benefitting the brain as well family are eating at least 5+ servings as the body.”

Food innovation boost Food innovation and greater employment opportunities are the focus for the latest Provincial Growth Fund investments for Hawke’s Bay. “The Hawke’s Bay has been earmarked as a priority region in terms of PGF investment to build on its farming and horticulture strengths, and provide employment opportunities and higher wages for locals,” said Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Regional Economic Development Fletcher Tabuteau. The investments total more than $14 million. “It is very exciting to see the next stage of the Food Innovation Hub come to fruition after initial PGF investment last year to fund a feasibility and business case for the hub. The Food Innovation Hub is well-placed to support the region’s horticulture, food, beverage and agri-technology industries by encouraging collaboration, innovation and sharing of resources, and this will flow on to create new businesses, more skilled jobs and improve productivity for the Hawke’s Bay region. “The Ngati Pahauwera Commercial Development Ltd — Training and Employment Project will receive $1.359m from the Te Ara Mahi programme funded through the PGF to provide targeted training and skills development for their community. It follows on from over $6 million of PGF investment announced in June from the
PGF’s Whenua Maori Fund and Te Uru Rakau’s One Billion Trees programme. This initial investment enabled Ngati Pahauwera to unlock the forestry and horticulture potential of their land.” The investment will support Ngati Pahauwera to help participants develop key skills and get job-specific qualifications such as class four Heavy Transport qualifications, which will lead to employment in its commercial nursery and horticultural operations.” The PGF is contributing $557,000 towards a Te Ara Mahi pilot programme run and co-funded by Turners and Growers, to upskill and build the management and leadership capabilities of at least 100 local horticulture workers, leading to 40 new local jobs. “This initiative is in recognition of an industry-wide skills gap in the horticulture sector for front line supervisors and those with management capability. Once this pilot is complete, the intention is to roll it out in Northland and Nelson, creating further employment opportunities. “The PGF will support Apollo Foods with an investment of $300,000 for a feasibility study to investigate the expansion of its existing state of the art beverage manufacturing facility and

Work visa changes Horticulture New Zealand has welcomed changes to temporary work visas that simplify the immigration system and recognise that overseas workers play a significant role in industries such as horticulture. “The changes mean that it will be more straightforward to hire skilled workers from overseas to work in areas of New Zealand where there are few New Zealanders available for the work,’ says HortNZ chief executive, Mike Chapman. “At the same time, the changes recognise the need to employ New Zealanders wherever possible but appreciate this is not always possible. New Zealand’s primary sector is worth more than $46 billion in exports a year. The temporary work visa changes will help ensure our growing industry has access to skilled workers, particularly at peak planting and harvest times.” Mr Chapman says HortNZ and other representative groups have been lobbying for changes to the current complex and unfair system for many years. “The changes will take effect over the next couple of years as the detail is worked out with industry input. We will be working through the detail over

the next couple of days and providing analysis to our grower members before the end of the week.” Federated Farmers is confident the simpler and streamlined temporary work visa process will deliver for the regions. “Our message that workforce and related problems experienced by the big cities are not necessarily those experienced in the provinces have been taken on board — we congratulate the government,” Feds employment spokesperson Chris Lewis says. “The changes will help ensure farmers and others can more easily employ migrants when they need them, and when the options for taking on and training suitable New Zealanders are exhausted.” By ditching the ANZSCO skill level classifications, there is much greater scope for a migrant worker to achieve career progression on our farms. “The changes incentivise farmers to invest in training and supporting migrant employees because there’s a greater chance of keeping them than currently exists. We also acknowledge the government for its compassionate and

pragmatic approach in reinstating the family entitlement for lower-skilled visa holders. The migrant worker’s children can be educated here, and their partner can get an open work visa. “It is a positive for rural communities to have settled and content families, not just single men who may well be sending all their money home to their family.”
The government has indicated the dairy industry is a likely early target group for one of the new sector agreements, containing specific terms and conditions for recruiting foreign workers. “Federated Farmers looks forward to working with other Team Ag partners and the government to help get this sector agreement right.”
