“I am simply stoked,” said the chair of the organising committee, Steve Levet. “We had a fantastic long weekend with between 800 and 900 people gathered for three days of events which kicked off at Port Albert, with the celebrations opened by Dr Lockwood Smith.” The House Speaker and soon to be Ambassador to London, is an Albertland descendant. “From Port Albert and Wellsford, these visitors fanned out across the Northern Kaipara, with many taking harbour boat trips, and many others boarding coaches for ‘heritage trails,’ visits to The Kauri Museum and the like. These covered geographical points of interest — old canning plants, schools, old family houses and farmlands “We had a video show in the Wellsford Community Centre, with the screen tracing the history, the story of the Albertland settlement, that had tears in people’s eyes. It is the first time anything has been produced which puts the whole Albertland story, from the embarkation in London, to the shores of the Kaipara, in some sort of context. “A gala dinner at Te Hana Te Ao Marama Maori Cultural Centre was an absolute highlight, with a cultural show and settler re-enactment as well as the buffet dinner and dance.

I lost count of the people who came up to say they had just met relatives they had long ago lost contact with.” Mr Levet said the many months of planning that went into the weekend was spearheaded by a committee of 20 people “but the credit goes out to the whole community. There were many, many unsung heroes behind the scenes, for instance providing trip commentary, helping clean up, and just assisting the huge influx of people

from out of town. It was a community effort from start to finish.” Albertland descendents at the event were recorded from Australia, Canada, Ireland, UK and the US. “Above all, the weather was on our side,” said Mr Levet. “We had been stressing something chronic over the forecast in the days before Easter, but the weather turned out unbelievably well. It all went off so smoothly, without a hitch.”

Dargaville High School News The recent Kaipara Kai Food Festival was one of those fun community events where many of us enjoy sampling different tastes and textures. This year there were a few notable celebrities including Mike Sabin MP and Alyson Gofton. Two students from our Year 12 Hospitality class agreed to assist Beef and Lamb New Zealand and Alyson Gofton with their food demonstrations. Students Kirsty Palmer and Jodie Rees, accompanied by P Burnett helped with the demonstration. The students received very positive feedback for their help, both from those who sampled the product, and from the representative of Beef and Lamb New Zealand (Richard Drake). During the course of this year we have a number of opportunities for parents and caregivers to discuss the progress of their child. Early in Term 2, we will be holding Academic Coaching interviews with Vertical Form Tutors for students in Years 11, 12 and 13. These will take place from 12 noon to 6:00pm on Wednesday May 9th. We will hold Academic Coaching interviews for students in Years 9 and 10 towards the end of Term 2 on Thursday June 21st. Parents will receive student reports on June 20th. Early in Term 3, on Thursday July 26th, we will hold an Options Evening, where we will also provide information regarding NCEA. On Thursday August 23rd the school will be closed for the day for our Academic

Celebrities are beginning to appear on the calendar of the Maungaturoto and Districts Rotary Club as it becomes more and more involved in the wider community. The club has an association with local schools through the Duffy Books in Homes programme, and one of the project’s sporting ambassadors, former Silver Fern, Linda Vagana, recently visited Paparoa Primary School. Linda was a member of the New Zealand Silver Ferns from 1992 to 2003 and played 61 tests for them over her career. She then played for her home country, Samoa, in the World Championships before she retired completely from the sport in 2005. “The kids were thrilled to welcome her to their school,” said Rotary copresident, Bet Nelley. “We have also been busy raising

funds with a ‘grand auction’. The auction has been held in Maungaturoto for many years and is a fun day when everyone can be assured a bargain. Organiser Keith Shadbolt said $5000 was raised and this money will go to local projects. Goods and vouchers from a wide variety of local businesses from Mangawhai to Matakohe helped the project. “The next thing on the agenda will be a celebrity speaker’s evening. This will be Judge Boshier, the principal family court judge, who will be speaking at 7.30pm at the Kaiwaka Sports Complex on Tuesday, May 1. All welcome with a $10 entry which includes tea or coffee. “The Maungaturoto and Districts Rotary Club serves Mangawhai, Kaiwaka, Maungaturoto and Paparoa, and meets on a Tuesday evening.

Coaching interviews to take place for students currently in Years 10, 11 and 12. Part of these interviews will involve choosing options for next year. For students in Years 11, 12 and 13 we will be holding interviews with subject teachers on Wednesday October 24th. This will give teachers time to collate feedback from marking the practise NCEA exams so they can give parents and students some direction for their final NCEA exams later in the term. The Kauri Museum has its 50th birthday this year and to celebrate, it is giving local residents free entry to its huge collection from next month onwards, until further notice. The offer is made to residents of Otamatea, the old county area that runs from Tokatoka to Kaiwaka. “The museum was set up in 1962 when Otamatea included Ruawai, Matakohe, Maungaturoto, Kaiwaka and Mangawhai,” said museum CEO, Bet Nelley. “In 1987 the county council amalgamated with Hobson County to become Kaipara District Council. “The museum began after 100 years of Albertland settlement when memorabilia was collected from all over the Otamatea area. At a later date, the decision was made to focus on recording aspects of the kauri Industry and it became Matakohe Kauri Museum. In 1997 it began trading as The Kauri Museum as we know it today.“ The chairman of the museum board, Peter King, said : “As this is the 50th anniversary of the opening of this museum, and in recognition of the

Long service recognised John Tripp a well known resident of Dargaville until recently was presented with his Masonic 60 year bar by Bryan Wiig, District Grand Master of the Northern Districts. This is a series of regular articles keeping you informed of happenings on our harbour today, and from bygone days — truly the ‘Jewel of the Kaipara’.

The silent saga of Crest  by Paul Campbell

Silent, Invisible, Predictable, Sustainable. That is the catch phrase employed by Crest Energy, the company behind plans for 200 undersea power turbines in the entrance to the Kaipara Harbour To this writer, the first two words of the ‘mission statement’ are particularly apposite. Silent and invisible. With the recent rahui ceremony at Pouto, where a gathering laid down a specific Maori cultural prohibition against the Crest turbine plan, I thought it was time to catch up with the company to find out how its plans were progressing. A telephone call to operations manager and director, Anthony J. Hopkins, at his Auckland office, was less than informative. “We are lawfully going about our business and possess the legal

and ministerial rights to do so,” he told me. So where was the project at? “I have no comment. I don’t wan’t to get drawn into it. It is a distraction and not constructive.” Are the turbines under design or construction? “No comment. I don’t want to say any more than that.” Interview over. To briefly recap — after a year or so out of the headlines — Crest Energy Limited has been granted consents through the Environment Court for three

experimental turbines as foreunners of a 200 turbine marine tidal in the mouth of the harbour. Each turbine would be the height of a 747 aircraft, and together they should be capable of churning out around 200MW — enough says Crest to supply an area from Albany to Cape Reinga. Earlier this month, opponents of the scheme from Ngati Whatua, Ngati Hine, Te Roroa and Te Uri O Hau gathered for the ceremony laying down the rahui. The Kotere Trust’s Tim Howard told the gathering the Crown had dishonoured and disrespected Te Uri O Hau’s role as kaitiaki and that the Crown and Crest Energy had little regard for the environmental significance of the area. With little forthcoming by direct contact, a quick visit to the company website elicits that fact that ‘Crest Energy does not currently have agreements in place concerning recruitment and the supply of products and services. Consideration of potential suppliers may commence in 2012’. And further, the website says Crest held well over 100 meetings over five

years with interested parties including the Auckland Regional Council, Northern Regional Council, Rodney District Council and Kaipara District Council and Te Uri O Hau. ‘Crest also attended hui and met with many other interest groups and individuals,’ it states. But today, Crest seems to have closed the consultative door. It perhaps remains to be seen what happens — if and when — three experimental turbines appear on the horizon, and the company attempts to affix them in the riotous waterway that is the Kaipara Harbour entrance. The Northland Regional Council has been charged with monitoring any such progress, However, it is also interesting to note the recent move towards a new Kaipara Harbour authority to replace the fragmented harbour administration as it stands, with different segments under the control of different councils and government agencies. It seems the Crest saga has some way to go.

Equestrian team — Easter crowds flock to off-road action looking good  by Andy Bryenton

A carnival atmosphere reigned as the second round of the 2012 Mickey Thompson NZ Offroad Racing Championship thundered into Mangawhai, drawing crowds and churning up the mud across two days of high-speed thrills.

For the first time in years Ruawai College has a complete team competing in the Interschool show-jumping competition at the Barge Park show-grounds in Whangarei Lead by coach Sara Ball, assistant coach Katherine Ball and manager Catherine Stewart, the team is made up of students Kaitlynn Bellamy, Jemma Ramsey, Anna Bickers, Emma Battcher and Olivia Stewart who have never competed in a show-jumping event before. “The team has been training at the Maungaturoto Equestrian Centre and other facilities, practising dressage and working on rider and horse fitness,” said Sara. “There are 17 teams entered and the competition is made up of three events, with individual points awarded to the teams. “The girls have raised money to have personalised uniforms, travel rugs, saddle blankets, polo shirts embroidered, and to cover training and travel expenses, with monetary donations made from Ruawai Lions and the Ruawai College PTA. “What our team lacks in experience they make up for in enthusiasm and they have gained massive confidence, training for four days a week for the last five weeks, with a huge commitment from parents, coaches and the team,” said Catherine. Other Kaipara school teams competing are Otamatea High School and Rodney College.

Heavy rains prior to race day meant the powerful off-road machines only had to scratch the surface before thick black mud was flying — and the fans loved it! Saturday’s short course was hastily modified when race marshals found one section a little too bogged down, but the mud on the flats and the dust on the sweeping hilltop corner were just the kind of conditions off-roaders thrive in. Soon the track (off Molesworth Drive in the heart of Mangawhai) echoed to a symphony of exhaust pipes and flame-spitting engines as the day’s racing got underway. Fans, who staked out early claims on primes spots like the banked hairpin and the jumps, were treated to all the action one could hope for from this exciting sport — big air, roostertails of dirt and dust, fast-paced overtaking and roaring horsepower. Those in the front rows enthusiastically received a baptism in good old Mangawhai mud

as the power of the off-roaders was unleashed. A number of classes were on display, from the diminutive Kiwi Trucks driven by up-and-coming youngsters, through to the gravity-defying nimble little Class 5 and 7 machines up to the ferocity and bulk of the big trucks and 4x4s. Oily smoke, broken steering rods and mechanical woes struck down a few racers, but the endurance and ruggedness which typified this kind of racing shone through. For those in the driver’s seat it was a weekend of skill and determination as they battled for top points honours going into the next round of the national series. But for the fans — and for Mangawhai holidaymakers enjoying an Easter break — it was a chance to watch top-class motorsport in their own back yard, complete with a sausage off the BBQ and a cold drink or two. And while the victors are hoping that their points are sufficient to clinch victory in the championship, we here in the Kaipara just hope that the mud and petrol circus of off-road action is back next year!

by Brian Plunkett Northland — One authority — has its time come? Kaipara with its present perilous financial state really has no future as a stand alone local authority. Reading the local newspapers it is obvious that the other local authorities have their own internal problems as well. Currently there are 38 councillors, three mayors, one chairman, four CEOs, and in excess of 800 staff, all to administer the needs of 160,000 people. The north is lagging behind in growth and development compared to other areas of New Zealand. We have the only natural deep water port in New Zealand, acres of industrial land at Marsden Point, potentially large scale mining, forestry, and farming. All of the above are not being managed properly because of the local body structures of four councils with diverse opinions as to how we go forward into the future and all wanting to keep it in their own back yard. One authority would go a long way to resolving this problem. We must be able to speak with one voice and from a position of strength — only then can we encourage industry,

manufacturing, and tourism, to invest in our Northland. This in turn will promote growth and employment opportunities especially for our young people. We need strength as one unit to combat the power lobby that is Auckland. Example: The four-laning of SH1 TO Whangarei. Auckland Lobbied against it and the money was diverted. What about Marsden Point deep water port? Should Northland own it then the income stream would stay in Northland? What about the rail link? Solution: Establish the southern boundary at the Dome Valley a natural boundary. Elect eight only councillors, two IWI representatives, one mayor or chairman. Abolish rates and replace with a citizens’ tax thereby spreading the burden. WHERE THERE IS A WILL THERE IS A WAY. However the success of the above can only be achieved by electing the right people with experience in governance and an understanding of local bodies, and the appointment of a top CEO. This is not about lower rates but a more responsible use of rates.

Dargaville author Maureen Sudlow was shortlisted for the Joy Cowley Writer’s Award this year, while her latest book is being considered for publication A member of the New Zealand Society of Authors, Maureen submitted her entry ‘Fearless Fred and the dragon’, the story of a little farm boy who has a big imagination. “I was shortlisted and received a certificate, with Scholastic still considering my book for publication. I love reading and love books and have a diploma in creative writing. My ideas come from my imagination or something I have seen or that happens that inspires me. Established in 2002, the Storylines Joy Cowley Award recognises the exceptional contribution Joy Cowley makes to both children’s literature and literacy in New Zealand and internationally. Matakohe Primary school student, seven year old Coryn Yorke, decided to do something for others, and when her little brother Oscar was due for a hair-cut and got his head shaved, Coryn wanted hers shaved too. So she did — and raised $519.00 for cancer research. “There was no talking her out of it, so I suggested that she could shave it and raise money for a great cause. So we checked out the website www.shaveforacure.co.nz on the 25 March and shave week started on the 26 March and Coryn shaved her head on 30 March,” said mum, Yvonne Yorke.

“The shave took place at Koko Hair Design, Mangawhai. “Coryn is totally proud and it was fun doing it for a good cause. Now she is really enjoying it and wants to keep it shaved,” said Yvonne. “Coryn is an amazing child, donating all her pocket money to Canteen last year to buy Christmas cards. Coryn has joined Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand (LBC) in her effort to get 10,000 people shaving in a mass expression of solidarity, one for each of the estimated 10,000 New Zealanders living with blood cancer.

Farming facing a lost generation by Bill Guest, Operations Director, Farmers of New Zealand

In a press release last week, the banks have now decided they believe farming is under threat of a lost generation, because young people are not turning to farming as a career. Banks are now planning to make available special financial loans to encourage emerging future farmers. No doubt this will include future sharemilkers In our agricultural history over the last hundred years, thousands of young men and women began their farming careers starting on wages. Those who chose the dairy industry worked on wages followed later on by 29%, 39% and 50/50 sharemilking agreements with dairy farm owners. It is generally accepted that sharemilking originated from the Scottish concept of share farming and was melded with the American share-cropping arrangement in the 1880s to produce an agreement which has led to the development and institutionalisation of sharemilking in the New Zealand dairy industry.

In 1937, the Sharemilking Agreements Act was introduced by statute of Parliament. This lower order sharemilking Act allowed young men and women to be independent contractors, without having to own dairy cows to enter into the New Zealand dairy industry. Many over the years have purchased their own farms. The Sharemilking Agreements Order 2011 has been ratified by Parliament and while there have been some changes to dividend related payments, it is still, we believe, the best performance related employment agreement available for dairy farm owners today, when employing an employee in a farming management position. As the farm manager, the sharemilker is responsible for the employment of staff and the farm owner is not subject to concerns about staff employment, the involvement of statutory and annual holidays, sick leave and ACC payments. All this is the responsibility of the sharemilker. The farm owner still controls the farming business under a sharemilking agreement and he is comforted by the knowledge that if he has a good sharemilker and production increases, the remuneration for the farm owner and sharemilker reflects the benefit.

Some dairy farmers pay their employee managers on a kilogram of milk solids basis. This is called a Walsh type of agreement. In doing so they run the risk of the IRD not accepting that the employees are deemed as independent contractors and have sought PAYE reimbursement payments from farmer employers, who have entered such contract agreements.

There is a big difference between the status of independent contractor and that of an employee (who is covered by the Employment Relations Act). The law requires that employers look at the control test. What is the degree of control that the employer or principal exerts over the work an employee or contractor is to do and the manner in which the work is to be done. The greater the extent to which the principal specifies work content, hours and methods and can supervise, regulate and/ or dismiss a person, the more likely it is that the person

would fall under the category of being an employee, not an independent contractor. Farmers of New Zealand encourage dairy farmers looking for managerial employees, to seriously consider using the new Sharemilking Agreements Order 2011. This is still the best way to encourage the next generation into the agricultural industry and on to farm ownership with the support of the banks. Yep, Boss puta ram out early an' lo an' behole, we got a cupla lambs ona ground. Sharlene spotted tha furs one ina paddock and went all weepy. “Deah, “ she tole a Boss. “Its Eastah an' I no it's sposed ta bee rabbits and 'lil chickens an' that, but look at that adoorabil little lambie....” Well, Boss grabbed 'is hat an' we headed out fer a bit a peece an' quite. “Mine you Dog, it won't bloody last. Sharlene's blimmin' neeces and nefews are headed our way, as well as them brothas and sistas of hers. Gonna get a bit crowded ina farm house so we lucky, gotta good excuse to roam ona paddicks lookin' for lambs.” I cood see whata Boss means. Last yeer Sharlene's brothers drank alla Boss's beer, an' as well 'e hada shell out for a hole buncha eastah eggs fer tha ankil biters — wotta Boss calls kids bein' a newsince. Well, I felt sorry fer tha Boss an' his beer stocks, but I kept me kouncil about Eastah eggs. Ya see, bein' a ratha smart Border Colly, even I sez so meself, I kin sniff out choclit at a cupla miles, ifa wins ina rite direkshin.

Sharlene usually hides choklit eggs 'roun' the garden. All I needs ta do is slip me kolla at nite, and I gets a real treet. But, mine yoo, I'm not gready. Choklit isn't all that good fer me dijestshin. But like I sed, I'm sharper than tha average kid. Wot I does is snaffle a few eggs an' hide 'em. Then, wen tha real Eastah treats come out — y'no — Hot Cross Buns! I gotta strong bargining persishin. I simply grabs a chocklit eggs, and puts it in fronta a ankil biter wots gotta bun, an' then giva kid The Eye. They soon getsa messij an' I swappa egg fer tha bun. Heh Heh. Warm 'n spisy bun, drippin' wiv butta. Beats muttin bones an Tux fer a change, Mine you, Boss is moanin' about Eastah visitas cloggin' upa farm, but I did heer Sharlene say he cooda gone downa line ta meet his mates in town. Buta Boss reckind no way he wuz gunna taka ute out ona highway. “Nah thunks, Sharlene,” he sid. “Blimmin' Easta gunna be a madhouse ona roads. Dargaville’s BNZ bank looks more like part of a kid’s cartoon this week, as throngs of tiny pink pigs cluster on every shelf and table, dressed to the nines in everything from bikinis to racing leathers The adorable swine are all part of a huge push by the local community to help Project Promise — the charitable trust aiming to build a world-class oncology hospital for the north. To boost the coffers of these crusaders against cancer the BNZ team have got more than 70 big-hearted local businesspeople on board, each of whom has dressed and decorated a piggy bank to raise money for the project. For the next couple of weeks public voting is open at the bank as the porcine sculptures vie for the crown of best and brightest. It’s a gallery with a difference — from the irreverent to the fun to the downright cheeky these creations show Dargaville’s sense of humor and sense of style along with a spirit of generosity. Bring the kids and take a look at the

parade of pigs on display, cast your vote and make a donation to Project Promise. It’s all for a great cause, and you can be certain that you’ll be entertained by the efforts of our local artists in the medium of plastic piggies!

The Dargaville Rotary Club is hosting the meeting on Wednesday April 11, in the Dargaville Town Hall at 12.45pm. “There is a lot of confusion in our community around transport,” said Debbie Evans, CEO of the Kaipara Community Health Trust. “Figures have been bandied around about what public transport could cost, with speculation ranging from $70.99 per ratepayer to $6.54. The community needs to understand what this means. We have asked Transport Operations Senior Programme Manager, Chris Powell, to be at the meeting. We’ve seen taxi services come and go, then we had Town and Arounds passenger transport service which was a private hire operation which didn’t meet criteria for subsidy.” Since June 2011 Ritchies Town Bus service has been running a scheduled service around Dargaville

township four times at day costing $5 one way. “The patronage ﬂuctuates from 70 people down to 20 people a week,” says Northland Manager for Ritchies, Karin Tangitu. Ms Evans added that the KCHT has been lobbying NRC to allow Ritches town bus passengers access to the SuperGold card scheme, for subsidised transport. “The government is not allowing any new services to join the SuperGold card scheme at present. The NRC will be applying on Dargaville’s behalf when this moratorium ends on July 1. The criteria to access the SuperGold card is that the transport service needs to be a contracted service to the NRC,” she continued. If people would like this service to remain in the town, they need to use it. Please attend the public meeting and voice your opinion, or, lodge a written submission to the NRC Plan.

You will see all that and more at the Kaipara Vintage Machinery Club Crank Up Day in Harding Park next weekend, starting at 10 a.m. “We have two show days every year, one in October and this one on Saturday 14th April,” says Club treasurer Mrs. Ann Lupton. Suggest to her that it is now more a country style show for modern young folk to see how things

were once done, and she agrees. “It’s getting that way. Arapohue’s Pamela Parkinson will be making butter and the Kaipara Equine Driving Club will be showing, I think eight, miniature horses. The sheep are being shorn in our 112 years old shearing shed we shifted in from Arapohue. A Lister 3 horsepower petrol engine powers the shearing plant. We are also
