Eight hundred feet hit the street p With 400 registered entrants ranging in age from two years old to a respectable 87, the Dargaville Veterinary Centre Run and Walk was a great success this past Saturday, as locals and visitors alike laced up their sports shoes under sunny skies. While many of those who took on the 10.5-kilometre and five kilometre loops did so just for fun and fitness, there was a serious side to the event for those competing to clock the fastest time. Louis Young of Warkworth came in first in the men’s division, with the women’s division top spot taken out by Maria Akeson from Kerikeri. The shorter, five-kilometre section saw Callum Hoult and Bella Earl take the men’s and women’s trophies respectively. While prizes and bragging rights were handed out to the quickest, for many the real award was enjoying a day out in the autumn sunshine with family and friends. Photo credit Jason Milich

p Kids from Dargaville got a taste of the world’s most widely followed team sport this week, as Junior Football Day kicked off at Sportsville. A joint effort brought to life by the Northern Wairoa Primary Schools Sports Association, Northern Football Federation, Dargaville Football Club and Sport Northland. The day was a celebration of the ‘beautiful game’ of soccer. A big thank you goes out to all seven schools who participated, and the more than 50 teams who took to the field. Special thanks, too, to Dargaville Veterinary Centre for sponsoring the event as well as Dargaville High School Students for refereeing the games.

A snapshot of the Northern Wairoa River on a millpond-calm day, this image clearly shows the historic Commercial Hotel to the far left, with the centre of the frame dominated by the milk factory where Mr Berridge’s father was a manager for three decades. Upon the hill, a lone pine stands sentinel where today the Dargaville Museum is situated. In the time this photo was taken, the view across the river to the milk company wharf would have been a familiar one for sailors transporting the produce of local farms by water.

p The Kaipara Hunting and Fishing Club held its annual Duck Hunters Claybird Shoot on Sunday, which provided an opportunity to safely get target practice before the opening of duck shooting season. “Our club has been running for 23 years in the Paparoa area, and this event saw 50 people attend. It was an 80 clay target course with prizes donated by our valued sponsors,” says club secretary Annette Pull. “It was a simulated field shoot, which means clay targets can be thrown from any direction from six stands. Newcomer Rex Orton recently moved to the area from Auckland and took out the major spot prize, so I am sure we will see him again. A great day was had by all.”Paul Dunnett placed first hitting 75 out of 80 clay targets, second was Hayden Smith and Andy Thompson came third.

The Local Government Commission has endorsed a Kaipara District Council proposal on local body elections for boundary adjustments and the establishment of a new Kaiwaka — Mangawhai ward.

Kaipara’s newest bridge has opened to traffic on State Highway 12 completing the last link in the multimillion-dollar Matakohe deviation and bridges project.

The two-lane Te Piringa Tahi bridge — which means ‘bringing together as one’ — is 191 metres long and stands 15 metres above the Matakohe River. It has six spans, each made up of five concrete supertee beams and is Northland’s longest supertee bridge, replacing the old wooden one-lane Hardies Bridge. Already open was the two-lane bridge at the western end of the deviation that’s replaced the old Anderson Bridge. Te Ao Marama Hou — which effectively translates to ‘moving from the past into the future’ — is 54.8m long and spans Parerau Stream. The two new bridges and 2.5km road realignment removes tight curves and short straights to improve safety on this section of the Twin Coast Discovery Route.

“Opening Te Piringa Tahi to traffic is the biggest milestone of the project and we’re very proud to have reached this stage,” says the NZ Transport Agency’s acting senior project delivery manager, Karen Boyt. “We ask motorists to keep an eye out for changes to the traffic layout while work continues. There will be stop/ go traffic management and temporary speed limits in place to help protect the road and keep our workers safe.” Both bridges will have their top seal laid before the end of the month, and the full length of the new road will be open to vehicles by May. The new entity will join Dargaville, Otamatea and West Coast/Central Wards, with each electing two councillors and with the mayor elected ‘at-large’ across the district. The next local body poll is due in October. The decision follows last year’s representation review — a survey required every six years to ensure council representation is fair, effective and meets the needs of its communities. However, the council may choose to review its representation arrangements prior to the 2022 triennial elections, according to spokesman, Ben Hope. Kaipara District Council Mayor Jason Smith said the decision “is an emphatic endorsement of the council’s work in improving the representation of Kaipara people at the council table. It’s a job well done with the experts saying we got this right. This sets us up confidently for the October council elections and beyond.”

Mangawhai Museum historian Bev Ross has taken 10 years to publish her book about the soldiers of the 58th Regiment. The Lovely People was launched at the Mangawhai Museum last week. “The 58th regiment soldiers came from England, Ireland and Scotland in the 1850s and were on coastal watch. FOUR WARDS FOR KAIPARA DISTRICT Over the last year Council have been undertaking a Representation Review. This looks at the wards, their boundaries, and names etc for the upcoming election. The council’s final proposal of 4 wards (an additional Kaiwaka-Managwhai ward) and no community boards was appealed by a small number in the community, and on 14 March 2019 the Mayor presented to the Local Government Commission (LGC) hearing on the council’s process and logic. The LGC has made their determination on our review and has endorsed the council’s final proposal of four wards with two councillors from each ward, and no community boards. This will take effect for the election being held in October 2019. Submissions have closed on proposed changes to aspects of the Kaipara District Council’s dog control policy, with more than 200 residents having their say with regards to what has become a controversial subject on social media. Dog control, in general, has been in the spotlight, with a recent petition by Dargaville man Graham Jones spurring further action, and attacks on family pets stirring online outrage. While the changes covered by recent submissions more specifically concern areas where dogs will be permitted to be exercised on and off leash under supervision, Council have further plans to address public concerns at their next regular meeting on May 2. Meanwhile, having areas where dogs can socialise and exercise is a piece of the overall dog management framework, encouraging responsible ownership. Council spokesperson Ben Hope says that there have been some good responses to the invitation for submissions and that there are still more on paper or via email to be sorted and collated. Additionally, the chief executive of the Kaipara District Council has been instructed to produce a report addressing residents’ concerns regarding roaming and dangerous dogs, to be presented at a meeting,

Dargaville racing’s death knell The final axe has fallen on race meetings at Dargaville, with confirmation that last September’s release of a governmentfunded review from racing expert John Messara has now been signed off by New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing. Dargaville is one of seven regional race tracks that will be closed for good, joining, in the North Island, Thames and Stratford, while in the south, Hokitika, Waimate, Winton and Wyndham will all close their gates. Thoroughbred Racing chief executive Bernard Saundry says there were not the financial resources to maintain 48 venues. “So what we’re looking to do is to right-size

The purpose of parks is recreation and fun green spaces set aside to benefit the community with some much-needed relaxation and family time. With that in mind, the Play in the Park day on April 7 was a resounding success, as a variety of community groups came together with people of all ages in Dargaville to have a good time and get active. Held at the town’s new Sportsville complex the day attracted enthusiastic crowds who got to try their hand at a range of leisure pursuits and sports. From mega inflatable slides and bouncy castles to bubble blowing, circus skills and giant-sized lawn games, there was a wealth of things to see and do on a sunny Sunday. With help from organisers and supporters such as Sport Northland, Kaipara District Council Silver Fern Farms Dargaville, Te Ha Oranga, Circus Kumarani and p Sports, games, circus skills and entertainment — it many more; it was a case was a big day to organize, but Play in the Park was a of the community coming resounding success together to have a great time. There has been a real momentum with regular event Whanau Day a Silver Fern the community groups inviting others to Farm Family Day at the local pool each join. Gun control needs more silver lining u by Matt King, Member of Parliament for Northland

If March 15 had any silver-linings, they are hard to find. I can locate perhaps three. Foremost among them is the way we responded as a people, exhibiting all those qualities I have mentioned. Second, we have a heightened sense of security that over time will undoubtedly play out as New Zealand being an even safer country. Third, is the immediate ban on the sale of automatic weapons. That is a good move and one widely supported in parliament, including by myself. I have a couple of issues with the broader gun control legislation. The first is that in recalling all automatic and semi-automatic weapons in legal and illegal ownership, those least likely to comply are the illegal owners such as the gangs. “At least one gang, and I refuse to give them any publicity by naming them, has said they won’t be handing in their weapons as they “need them for defence”. Given that, I believe we should give police more extensive powers to search and seize on gang premises with little more cause than the supposition that illegal guns are present. The ill-conceived statement by that gang is an open admission that they have guns. That should be

more than enough for a police raid — right? My second issue that this is an important issue and one deserving of respect and consideration. What it didn’t deserve, what no legislation deserves or should have, is to be rushed through with a one-day sitting of a select committee ‘in the heat of the moment’. It is complex, it affects many people, and it doesn’t specifically address the gangs. Whilst I agree with the immediate banning of the sale of these weapons, the recall of those already out there will take time. The government could have used that time to draft more robust and less confusing legislation. What they have done, however, in this knee-jerk action, is set a dangerous precedent that goes to the core of our legislative process, and that is where I have a real concern.

The Dargaville Fire Brigade is holding various fundraising events as they prepare for the annual Leukaemia and Blood Cancer Firefighter Sky Tower Climb. The Dargaville team will join others from across the country as they climb the 1,103 stairs to the top of the Auckland Sky Tower on May 18. “We have five members preparing and getting our fitness up to compete. We are doing all sorts of things to raise money for the charity including selling raffle tickets, and we hope to do a carwash in early May,” says team member p The Dargaville Fire Brigade Sky Tower stair challenge team Jeff Cleary. “The winner of the recent raffle for us it is very sad when we try to save a motorised car was Michael Lea of someone’s house and special items Whangarei. Kevin Tebbutt of Waipu and his daughter Natalia are travelling around Northland in a green GMC truck named The Dump Truck to start people talking about mental health and suicide awareness. Kevin says the idea arose after viewing a documentary about suicide titled Jessica’s Tree in early March. “This was my first positive thought for the year, but it was just about putting stickers on cars that was to say Jessica’s Tree after watching the video online that night. After a phone conversation with Natalia, all I wanted to do was create people talking and listening — by midday it had manifested into The Dump Truck with Natalia’s help,” said Kevin. The concept behind The Dump Truck is to get people talking about mental health and if people lost someone to suicide to write their name on the truck. “There are about 70 names on the truck already. We encourage people to sign their name if they have suffered from depression, anxiety, etc. If you have lost someone to suicide write their name with a RIP.” Carried on the truck’s tray is a green casket where people can write down their story or their thoughts and leave it inside. Kevin says these will never be read but instead the casket will be cremated.

Thanks to a collaboration between Dargaville’s local library, the team at the town’s Te Awa Riverside gardens, and a talented young event planner, these school holidays will present the chance for readers of all ages to take a walk with dinosaurs. Bringing the joy of a good story to the outdoors has been the aim of this holiday project, known as a story walk. The book chosen to present as a series of laminated poster cards, set up throughout the scenic Te Awa Riverside gardens, is STOMP by Ruth Paul, a tale of dinosaurs playing a game of follow the leader with uproarious consequences. With a story to follow through words, and another one cleverly told in the illustrations, this finalist for NZ children’s book of the year translates well to the story walk format. The gardens will be set up with big, easy to follow panels from 11am

The Dargaville Fitness Trail at Selwyn Park is officially open after a two-year process, which has seen three fitness trail stations constructed. “As we were securing the fitness gear to the concrete, the kids were already playing on it!” says Dargaville Lions President, Brian Nesbit, after Kaumatua Rex Nathan blessed the facility and officially opened by Dargaville Mayor Dr Jason Smith. The fitness trail has been very popular with both young and old, and many groups are now using it regularly. The latest set of equipment is a nine-station outdoor fitness hub. It’s something very new to Dargaville and has been very well received by the community, adding to existing monkey bars, chin-up bars, a sit-up and press-up bench, balance beams, parallel bars and a two-metre wall. All three stations are approximately 400 metres apart, so patrons can run, walk or even cycle between them for more aerobic activity. Future plans are to connect these with a shared path for running, walking and cycling.

This addition makes Selwyn Park a focal point for fitness. The park is already home to the Kauri Coast Community Pool, a skate park, playground and basketball hoop. Planning is also underway to include a pump track this year. The project, supported by Sport Nor thland’s Kaipara community connector Roxanne Kelly, started in March 2017 when a Kaipara District Council community consultation process identified outdoor fitness as a community goal. Roxanne approached the Dargaville Lions Club, who was keen to lead the concept as their centennial project. The project has been mainly funded by an endowment the Lions received from the David Saies estate, as well as Kaipara District Council who supplied concrete for the last station. They come from all walks of life and represent all ages. From a young lady in school uniform through to those in their retirement seeking to give something back to the community. Gathered around a table at Dargaville’s Norfolk Court Home and Hospital, they are a cross-section of the populous of this small Kiwi town. What they have in common, however, is something extraordinary. These are the volunteers who regularly visit the residents here at Norfolk Court, taking time out from their own schedules to share their talents and their comradeship. Some read stories and poetry, and find that some of Norfolk Court’s residents finish famous phrases, or remember lines from their school days long ago. Others play music and sing, bringing a blend of old time classics, country music and songs from

halfway around the world to entertain. The RSA sends a representative to speak to veterans who served our country in wartime. A local lady comes to sit with the elderly residents and talk, just being a friend. Another brings art supplies so that there’s creativity and colour in these folks’ days. Though they have many skills and abilities, all agree on two things. Firstly,

With more than a quarter century of experience behind him, local veterinarian Graeme Ewenson is proud of his decision to commit his skills to help the community by opening a mixed practice serving both livestock and companion animals. His new practice Sustainable Vets is now fully operational, and he’s assembled a team to help take care of creatures large and small. It all began with Graeme’s upbringing and education. He grew up on a Ruawai dairy farm and went on to study at Massey University, branching out into the world of vet science. Passionate about rural New Zealand and with a mind towards helping generate better outcomes for farmers and their animals, he has dedicated his professional career to the principle blazoned on his signage, sustainable veterinary practice. Sustainable in this sense means a broader, big-picture approach to animal health, starting at what is a grassroots level. It leads on to great results for both livestock, land and the people who care for them, as well as profitability. Farmers have seen the benefits, and so Graeme’s practice has grown. Growing, too, has been his new ‘home base’ in Dargaville. Construction is now complete on facilities for small animals, and Graeme has gathered a top team to assist him. Described as part Easy Rider and part Wacky Races, this landmark film has inspired Kiwi directors and actors during the years, as well as some of our modern racing drivers and owners of the classic Morris or Leyland Mini. It’s also inspired an event, which is run every two years for the KidsCan charity. An event in which 60 teams will drive their Minis more than 2,500km from Kaitaia to Invercargill for six days, following in the tyre tracks of the film. This time, the police aren’t in hot pursuit — they’re keen to help out. After all, the 2017 Pork Pie Charity Run brought in more than $200,000 for KidsCan, a charity

that works to help underprivileged Kiwi children get a good start in life. The Mini has a special place in the Pork Pie mythos, not just in the original, but in the 2017 remake. With the commemoration of their 75th birthday coming up in August next year, and plans afoot to celebrate the centenary of New Zealand’s first airmail flight, you could safely assume that the history of Dargaville’s link to the water is on the minds of boating club members as they prepare for their annual Easter regatta. The big event, which draws vessels and sailors from around the largest harbour in the Southern Hemisphere, is as much about the future as about the past.

With a longer than usual holiday on the calendar, this may prove to be the biggest regatta in recent times, with plenty to see from onshore as boats of all sizes square off in a series of friendly competitions. As in previous years, it’s not just the power and speed of each craft, which takes the trophy; it’s the skill of the crew reading the capricious waters of the Northern Wairoa, and being clever enough to match their times around the course. Of course, the expanse of water where this recreational run takes place was once a thriving hub of river commerce. In the days of tall ships and kauri mills, the muddy waters in sight of Dargaville sometimes resembled a forest of masts. Now, the river links the town to the ocean via the great Kaipara Harbour, a drawcard for anglers and those who seek an active, outdoor life after leaving the city. Thus, the appeal of having a river and a thriving boating club in the heart of town looks like being a positive point for the future, just as it was in our colonial past.

The big regatta is set for April 20, with the boats lining up for the starter’s gun at 11am. There are plenty of great spots along the riverside to take photographs and watch the action, but of course, all comers are welcomed to

visit the headquarters of the boating club itself, next to the riverside gardens in Dargaville. Good food and further entertainment are promised when the racing is over and the afternoon draws into the evening. ¢
