Fire guts Paparoa community centre

“Dargaville simply treated us like royalty,” said race director, Peter Yarrow, as the cyclists left on Monday morning for the next leg of their journey, to Brynderwyn. “We had to get back on the road without thanking so many people, but to Peter and Pam who hosted at the Commercial Hotel and to the folk at the Boating Club — a million thanks — and the same goes to the whole of Dargaville and all the people we passed en route. We have had a really grand reception.” Mr Yarrow said the Tour of New Zealand puts the country in the international spotlight, with media from Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, China and the UK, who have actually come to ride in the tour. “International media teams will have the opportunity to experience both the North Island and South Island stages of the tour, to fully sample New Zealand’s diversity of landscapes,” he added. The tour involves some 450 riders overall, completing all or part of the event starting simultaneously last Saturday, from Cape Reinga and from Bluff. Eight days later, the two sectors meet in Wellington. “It is all about encouraging cyclists to give it a go, creating champions and promoting the amazing cycle touring opportunities right here in New Zealand,” said Mr Yarrow. “We know the event will generate a huge amount of interest at home, in Australia and further afield.

A fire in the early hours of Monday morning destroyed the former Paparoa Bowling Club rooms adjacent to the showgrounds on the main road through the town. The building was being used as a community education centre. It’s thought

the fire was deliberately lit, and the police have been informed. The Fire Risk Management officer for the Whangarei and Kaipara area, Craig Bain, is seen here sifting through debri to try and determine the cause of the blaze.

“It’s just devastating, said one of a number of locals looking on from behind Fire Service tape. “The kids around here were getting a great deal out of the centre. I can’t see how it could be replaced, just looking at the damage.”

Maungaturtoto’s community services will get a financial injection after the running of the second Carters Maungaturoto Golf Ambrose event at the Paparoa Golf Club last Saturday The light-hearted annual tournament attracted 14 teams of four players, with the stipulation each team had to include one women, and appropriate — preferably fanciful — headgear was also in order. “The weather gave us a little concern,” said organiser, Josh Monk, “but we struggled through after the 11am shotgun start and players made it through the refreshments and the sauage sizzle on course.” At the end of the day, there were prizes galore from Carters suppliers’ merchants, with other support from the Maungaturoto Hotel.

This is a series of regular articles keeping you informed of happenings on our harbour today, and from bygone days — truly the ‘Jewel of the Kaipara’.

Story of a shipwreck  by Brian Eastwood

All seemed to be going to plan for skipper Captain John Pearson leaving Kaipara Harbour late on a March afternoon in 1899. With his wife and children on board, his 200 tons threemasted barquentine Cuthona was outward bound to deliver 158,000 feet of kauri timber to Sydney. Anchored off Pouto Point they waited for the signal to sail. At three o’clock permission came and at four they were under way. The breeze was steady from the northeast, the pilot station was passed at five and the lighthouse at 6pm. But their speed dropped to four knots

a little later and at seven o’clock things started to go seriously wrong. The fresh wind died away to leave them stuck between North Spit and Tory Shoal. Crew broke out the lead line to check the depth of water that showed fourteen fathoms but quickly dropped to twelve and then eleven. At the inquiry Pearson told how he then gave the order to let go the anchor. “Before the order could be carried out, a breeze sprang up off the land so I countermanded the order. I was then heading towards North Spit but the wind was favourable so we set sails again to continue the voyage. No sooner were

the sails set than the wind dropped to light. We were too close to let go the anchor so I tried to sail off. She held her own for some time but gradually we were carried sideways. She then struck and swung around onto the bank about a quarter of a mile from the end of the Spit.” Pearson told how Cuthona leaned over to seaward with seas breaking over her. Her hull on the port side was smashed, the forecastle and rigging gone and one mast had rammed through the bottom of the hull. The crew of eight and the skipper with his family still in their night clothes, got off in a lifeboat. Then came the long walk to Pouto lighthouse where they arrived at two o’clock in the morning. attempted next day to drag her off, but it was hopeless. Cuthona was built in Scotland in 1878 of oak and copper fastened. She had been trading on the usual routes, bringing coal from Newcastle to New Zealand and back loading with kauri from Kaipara. It seemed that there was an element of luck as well as ability needed for sailing in and out of Kaipara Heads. Earlier on that same evening when Cuthona struck North Spit another ship, Isabella Anderson, had easily sailed out, prompting the pilot station to give the ‘sail now’ signal to Cuthona. The Kaipara graveyard had claimed yet another victim but Captain Pearson and his crew were considered blameless and their certificates returned to them.

Hanging on the wall in St Peters Anglican Church in Te Kopuru is a memorial plaque remembering two soldiers who served in World War One and an airman who served in the Second World War. They were three lads who left Kaipara, never to come home again. Each has some of their wider family still living in Northern Wairoa

Suez, expecting to end their travels on Gallipoli. After some quick extra training in Egypt they were shipped over to the beaches of Anzac. But unexpectedly Gallipoli Peninsula was evacuated twelve weeks later on December 20th and Ernest’s unit was sent back to Egypt. As an infantryman he was now in the Auckland Infantry Regiment that was needed on the Western Front. So in April 1916 they were off again, this time to the south coast of France arriving at Marseilles and

then by train up to Armentieres. A little more than one year after leaving Te Kopuru, Ernest took part in the infamous first battle of the Somme. It was 6.20 in the morning of 15th September when the Auckland and Otago Regiments led the attack on the German trenches. were out of action, halted by mud and mechanical problems. On the second day the tanks did prove their worth when one finally caught up with the New Zealand troops. Ernest had survived the horror of that first day of battle but in the attack next day on the village of Fler he was listed as killed in action. It was 16th September 1916. More than six hundred New Zealanders had been killed and fourteen hundred wounded for an advance of less than one kilometre. The young man from Te Kopuru lies in Heath Cemetery at Harbonnieres, south of the main road between Amiens and St Quentin, France.

When German troops invaded Holland, Belgium and Luxembourg on 14th April 1940, Tom Bassett’s 15 Squadron flew their first war mission. The target was Waalhaven airport near Amsterdam where paratroopers had landed. It was a success and all the planes returned although some had been hit. On the May 12th they took off on a raid to destroy a bridge across Albert Canal near Maastricht, a city in Holland. Of the twelve planes that flew off from England, only six planes returned and they were all badly damaged. They thought that the Germans had actually been waiting for them. Phyllis went back again in 1990.” Thomas Bassett is buried in the Maastricht General Cemetery with other Airforce men and some local people. He shares a joint grave with a member of his crew, Leading Aircraftman William Cavanagh. Both boys were twenty- two years old.

DUCK SHOOTING SEASON Thai Duck Massaman Curry Ingredients (serves 4)

1 Duck cut into cubes 400ml can of light evaporated milk 4 tablespoons olive oil 2 large brown onions, sliced 1 teaspoon salt 3 tablespoons curry paste 500ml chicken stock (or water) 2 cinnamon sticks 2 bay leaves 1 kumara sweet potato, chopped 1 tablespoon tamarind paste or lemon juice 1 tablespoon fish sauce 1 tablespoon grated palm sugar 1 tablespoon roasted peanuts Sliced spring onions, for garnish

Curry Paste Ingredients

1 teaspoon ground coriander seeds 2 teaspoons ground cumin seeds 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 tsp ground cardamon seeds 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves 2 sticks lemongrass (inner white part only), finely sliced 6 cloves garlic, peeled and chopped 1 large onion, peeled and chopped 4 cm piece ginger, peeled and chopped 1 tbsp shrimp paste 10 large dried chillies, soaked in warm water (remove seeds if you do not want a very hot curry) Method: Combine ground spices (coriander, cumin, cinnamon, cardamon, cloves) in a frying pan and stir over medium heat till fragrant. Place all remaining ingredients together with the roasted spices in a food processor and blend into a smooth paste.

Method

1. Fry onions in a pot with the oil until brown. 2. Add the duck and salt and cook until meat is browned. 3. Add massaman curry paste and 1/2 can of evaporated milk and cook for 5 minutes on low heat. 4. Add stock, remaining evaporated milk, cinnamon sticks and bay leaves and cook for 1 hour. 5. Add kumara, tamarind, fish sauce, and palm sugar and cook till meat and kumara is tender (add a little water if needed). 6. Garnish with peanuts and spring onions, and serve with rice.

— if hunters have the skills Northland Region Fish & Game says there are plenty of game birds around for the start of the hunting season this weekend — if the weather plays its part when the season opens on Saturday May 5 “The prospects are good but as usual, success will depend on other factors including a hunter’s skills and the weather,” says Fish & Game Officer Nathan Burkepile. “There’s been so much rain around that birds may be quite widely scattered with a number found in flooded paddocks, with fewer birds flying into ponds. “Instead of sitting in a maimai, hunters need to be prepared to shift their position to say, beside a paddock under camouflage netting. It’s a matter of relocating your hunting opportunities.” Pheasant and quail populations remain healthy with the Northland Region providing some of the best upland game bird hunting in the country. But Mr Burkepile points out that success on the day can’t be measured by the number of birds which are bagged. He says the opening is as much about “having fun with your mates and kids and enjoying the excitement

of the day, and taking part in a Kiwi tradition.” He’s appealing to hunters who harvest any birds with bands to contact Fish & Game. “Please phone us with details of the bird, its band number and where it was taken.” Hunters are reminded that rangers will be out in force over the weekend and will be checking licences, and if they’re found with lead shot — now banned within 200 metres of open water — it will be seized and prosecution will follow. “Hunting without a licence is simply not worth the risk given substantial fines and the loss of your firearm,” he adds.

Sixty-odd years of giving were celebrated at a Kaipara service and social club last weekend, as five men became life members. The Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes Kiwi Lodge at Matakohe has been around since the end of the Second World War, meeting in clubrooms on the site of the old Matakohe Hall, destroyed by fire not long before. Local farmer, Allan Swindlehurst, was one of those honoured with life membership, and said the lodge has long had a firm focus on charity works and giving. “We recently gave a sum to the Relay for Life event, raising money for cancer research and over the years we have supported a wide range of community activities.” The lodge in fact is part of an international movement believed to have been founded at a time during the 16th century when societies were frowned upon to the extent that membership could literally mean ‘losing your head’. ‘It is said that Queen Elizabeth I, being satisfied that we were not a threat to either the monarchy or society in general, presented us with a banner, which enabled us to meet without fear or favour, and to this day whenever a lodge meets, politics and religion may not be discussed,’ says a notice on the RAAOB website. The life-members named at the weekend joined their fellows and family members in a traditional beverages and barbecue evening.

Thanks are in order after record festival turnout This year’s Kaipara Kai and Fun Festival truly had something for everyone – the crowds who turned out to sample the best of our local fare were spoiled for choice when it came to food, wine, fun and entertainment. But an event of this magnitude doesn’t happen overnight, and the organisers behind the successful festival would like to offer their thanks to the many unsung heroes, generous organisations and local businesses who made it all possible. The organisers – and the people of Dargaville – would like to make their appreciation known. From support for visiting celebrity chef Allyson Gofton to the stunning fireworks display which capped the festivities, all the way down to simple things like the loan of picnic tables and trestles or donations of time and enthusiasm, it was the volunteers and benefactors who made the Festival happen. It’s the same for many community events – and it’s quite often the same dedicated people you’ll find behind the scenes time and time again.
