Swimming official on world stage

 by Joanna Manson

A long-standing biannual rugby trip to Australia will see the Ruawai U13 boys team playing three games in New South Wales this week.

 Back, from left: Daniel Fenney, Ryan Hassall, Hayden Sanford, Jacob Burton, Rico Connelly, Mahia Neho-Poutai, Luke Bracey. Front: Daniel Grbin, Malakai Neho-Poutai, Laine Hickey, Brent Hick, Cameron Bracey, Michael Fenney

Tour manager Corey Hopkins said the boys had been training hard since the end of January and organisation for the big trip had been a “two year process.” The tour is with the Northern Barbarians team (formerly Cherrybrook Beecroft) and contains an element of friendly rivalry from the longstanding tradition. “Last year they travelled to Ruawai, now it’s our turn to head over. We’ve been fundraising for the last two years and that has involved a lot of silage stacks, picking up hay, a fundraising dinner and a casino night,” said Corey. The majority of the Ruawai U13 team are local lads, with a few members from nearby Arapohue and Dargaville making up the 15-strong squad.

The first game for the team will be held in the Blue Mountains against the Blue Tongue Rugby Club on April 20. While away Corey has put time aside to allow the boys to attend a dawn service on Anzac Day as well as fitting in sightseeing in the Blue Mountains, a theme park and visiting the Sydney Opera House. “The kids are super excited and we are all feeling ready to go. We are really thankful for the many sponsors who have contributed and helped get the kids for this year’s tour,” he said. To keep updated on the team’s progress while abroad, follow their Facebook page, 2017 Ruawai JMB Aussie Tour. 

“My goal was to get on that list as it’s so hard to get on. So I’m just really happy to get some appointments,” she said. Carlrine’s husband Ross is also on a Fina list for open-water swimming. “It’s such a big thing for Northland, that Dargaville has two Fina officials — we’ve never had that before. “Every sport needs their officials. At national meets, probably 97% of officials don’t have kids swimming so we all do it because we love to do it — it’s my sport.” The Fina World Championships will be held in Budapest from July 14 to 30, at the new Dagaly Swimming Complex; and the World Para Swimming Championships in Mexico

City from September 30 to October 6, at the Francisco Marquez Olympic Swimming Pool. In her career thus far, Ms Gillespie has attended a five-day para swimming course in Singapore and the Oceania Swimming Championships last year in Fiji. Fina has awarded the world championships to Budapest after it built an ultra-modern swimming complex — described as a state-ofthe-art venue. “It’s exciting getting there as the complexes are just so different,” said Carlrine. “We don’t have anything that matches them in New Zealand. It will be an eye-opener.” 

One-on-one success

New role for radio man

 by Joanna Manson

 by Anna Harding

The Mangawhai SeniorNet has found success with a new initiative involving one-on-one learning to maximise technology use.

Big River FM’s Anaru Tana has become the overall mentor of the Tu Tamariki Ki Kaipara youth programme this year for boys aged 7–14.

 Mangawhai SeniorNet members attending at a monthly ‘help clinic

Committee member Val Cleaver said offering seniors an alternative to a group training session had been valuable with helping to fix “specific problems.” “People seem to pick up skills a lot better in this type of learning situation so we are trying to encourage more people to give it a go,” she said. “People do struggle and we encourage them to come and have an hour with a tutor. It can be any technological problem. “Through our help clinics we usually identify if someone has a specific problem and go from there,” she said. Val hopes that the initiative

 Anaru Tana, the Tu Tamariki mentor coordinator for Whanau Focus

will encourage new membership so newcomers can then enjoy many of the other group benefits and courses SeniorNet offers. “We still run ‘tech Tuesday’ and ‘wired Wednesday’ each week, and looking ahead we are quite keen to run some Internet banking courses with the dummy Westpac site. Recently Mangawhai SeniorNet has been asked to help the needs of Wellsford Citizens Advice Bureau volunteers. The one-on-one training with a volunteer tutor takes one hour and costs $15 for a SeniorNet member and $25 for a non-member. 

Whanau Focus Centre manager Wendy Salter feels honoured that Anaru has agreed to work with them. “Anaru will bring some wise experience and new energy to have the mentoring programme flourish,” she said. “We’ve got a big challenge, but what I like about this organisation, Whanau Focus, is that challenges have been and gone and they’ll always be there, but we overcome them and get on with the job. “My role is to listen to the mentors about what they want me to coordinate and what they want to achieve,” Anaru said. “I see it as a challenge. My main

focus is to set a really solid foundation. “I think it’s important for our next generation. We can see the potential in all these young ones and everybody in my opinion has the potential to be a good mentor.” Anaru said the organisation is always on the lookout for new mentors. “Someone who can listen, care and be a good role model for these young boys. To give whatever amount of time they can.” Anyone interested can visit the Whanau Focus Centre. Phone 09 439 7009 or email kaptutamariki@ vodafone.co.nz. 

Celebrating school ethnicity

Local rugby teams on show

 by Joanna Manson

 by Anna Harding

St Joseph’s School in Dargaville held a Cultural Day last week to celebrate the many ethnicities the school community represents.

The Kaihu Rugby Club made it onto television last week as the Toyota GrassRoots show came along to their home games last Saturday.

 Children from St Joseph’s School showcase their cultural day outfits

During term one the school chose to study ‘culture’ as a topic of enquiry, ending with a mufti cultural day and shared lunch. Teacher Carla Hill said it was a celebration of the multicultural pupils including Filipino, Samoan, Italian and Tongan nationalities in their school. “It’s about realising where we all come from and the kids being able to identify with the different nationalities. “It’s also in line with our school charisma, which is really important.” Children dressed up in a range of

ethnic costumes and started off the day with a mass before a parade, with each classroom showcasing their cultural attire. The lunchtime spread involved exotic food with pizzas, hangi and chop suey on offer. “It’s about respect and knowing that we all have our unique languages and backgrounds that makes us who we are,” said Carla. “For the kids it’s learning to show acknowledgement and appreciation for one another within our community.” 

Where It’s Easy to Live Road Works for the District – April 2017

NOTE TO DRIVERS ON UNSEALED ROADS: Unsealed roads require regular laying of maintenance aggregate. If tyres are low, road users can run the risk of punctures on freshly laid metal. The material we use is a standard product as per the maintenance contract specifications. Generally the use of heavier graded GAP 40 is applied in the winter to fix soft areas that arise due to moisture in the pavement, or in heavy build-ups to restore the structural integrity of pavement. This larger material is particularly prone to puncturing worn tyres, but is a necessary requirement during the winter months to ensure the roads are still safely traversable. An effort will be made to roll this product where it is applied in large quantities to mitigate this issue; however, it is not practical to apply this to every instance. Please take caution when travelling on freshly laid aggregate and check the condition of your tyres - especially if you live on the unsealed network. This is not a problem isolated to Kaipara but is an issue on all unsealed networks. Thanks for your patience. PUBLIC NOTICE Broadspectrum NZ Ltd, Kaipara Branch is continuing their full network round of glyphosate roadside vegetation spraying. The spraying contractor of Broadspectrum NZ Ltd is performing vegetation growth control and roadside spraying alongside sealed and unsealed roads in the Kaipara District. Please refer to programme below for location of spraying which is subject to weather conditions. Routine works planned on Council roads throughout the whole District during April include pothole repairs both on unsealed and sealed roadways as they are identified and grading of select roads pending sufficient rainfall.

• Footpath construction – Logan Street • Sight improvements – Bull, Arcadia, Opanake and Opuna Roads • Mechanised tree pruning – Avoca, Omamari, and Baylys Coast Roads We may experience some delays with work programmed during the month of April if weather restricts plant movements and progress; however, the majority of works will continue.

Do you have a background in civil engineering site works and would like to oversee quality developments in your own backyard?

• Area specific works completed during the last month include:

Kaipara District Council is looking for someone who is available to work two days per week on a casual basis in the eastern part of Kaipara. You will be inspecting roading, stormwater and wastewater infrastructure to ensure that development requirements are met. So if you have:

• Water table restoration – Monteith Road

• A civil engineering background.

• Sight improvements – Houto Road, Arcadia Road; on-going

• Computer skills.

• Sealed pavement repairs – Baldrock Road

• A driver’s licence.

All routine work is done in cycles across the District. In endeavouring to provide good roads at the most economic cost, sometimes only spot grading and metalling is done as it is about one-quarter of the price of blanket metalling and grading that has tended to be done in the past.

• A desire to be part of a friendly team who are committed to making Kaipara a place where it’s easy to live.

Dargaville Police Station is trialling a new roster which has welcomed additional staff to the area combining urban and rural policing experience.

 New to the Dargaville beat, Constable Nathaniel Blair

Constable Nathaniel Blair was working in Whangarei before taking on a six month community focussed post in Dargaville. As a member of the force for the last few years Constable Blair said it was good to work in different areas and experience the different styles of policing. Senior Sergeant Rob Huys says the trial roster will see more frontline uniformed staff like Nathan become first respondents to urgent jobs in the area. “It’s going to be really good for our area and allows us to have more coverage at crucial times. To supplement the roster we have two members travelling across from Whangarei, almost on a daily basis to make sure we have the sufficient staff numbers,” he said.

Sgt Huys anticipated that the new members would pick up “on a number of things” while working in a small town environment. “We are really looking forward to seeing how this goes and increasing visibility and availability for our local community. Nathan is doing really well so far. We have welcomed him on board — although he hasn’t shouted the station morning tea just yet!” The new roster will remain on trial for six months before a further decision on staffing will be made. 

Mayor’s Message Planning One thing your Councillors are learning fast is that planning is a large part of the role and a statutory requirement. We are required to do a ten‑year Long Term Plan, and then that Plan has refresh points every three years. The next ten‑year Plan starts in 2018. This will provide a great opportunity for our various communities to have input into what they would like to see, whether that’s a better water supply to Dargaville or more facilities to cater for the elderly in Paparoa and Maungaturoto, your feedback will be what drives the Plan... so start thinking now, and it’s never too early to get your thoughts to us. As I write this, we are halfway through a round of district meetings to consult on the Annual Plan (budget). Other than in Mangawhai, where 17 people attended, all meetings had single figure attendances, so for coming years, we will need to look at a better method of engaging with you. Thanks to those of you who did attend; your feedback is appreciated. We have been very constrained in recent years because of our debt levels. Debt will reduce by about 2 million this financial year, and we are projecting a reduction of a little over $3 million for the following year. What that says is during our next planning period, we will actually have some money to do some things as debt will be getting towards a manageable level, so that’s very motivating. Pine Forests Kaipara District Council owns 587 ha of pines in six blocks that, in principle, are surplus to Council requirements. With a book value of around $5 million and some of the forests close to maturity, they will be worth a considerable amount. We are

currently in the market looking to sell these blocks. Log prices are at record levels, so the timing seems ideal. All blocks come under the Emissions Trading Scheme, which means they must be replanted in trees or else Council would have to pay a large sum to exit the land from trees. Forestry is not the core business of Council. The estimated return on the trees will be about the same as our cost of capital or potentially less, so a sale seems sensible. To ensure future options aren’t traded away, some key blocks will be sold with an easement allowing access should we ever want to incorporate them into a walking or cycling track or something similar. Obviously, an easement for forestry won’t discount the price as no one lives on the blocks and the land use is “static”. Proceeds from any sale will be used to retire debt. Audit, Risk & Finance Committee Council now operates an Audit, Risk and Finance Committee; its role is to look at the finances in more detail than the full Council and oversee the statutory audit and any internal audit work. When I stood for this role, I committed to you that the Chair of the Audit, Risk and Finance Committee would be a suitably qualified independent person, not a Councillor, for obvious reasons. Richard Booth (ex‑Commissioner) agreed to do the role for year one. That has been great during the transition. He has indicated that he does not want to continue past this year, so the Committee will be looking for a suitably qualified individual to fill this important role. Any thoughts, get them to me please. Greg Gent Mayor

The ultimate mark of honour by Andy Bryenton

During the siege of Sevastopol, in the Crimean War — the war which gave us the doomed, heroic Charge of the Light Brigade — British soldiers captured several Russian cannons. It was an act of bravery under fire which caught the attention of royalty. Queen Victoria commissioned a medal for those in her military forces who displayed uncommon valour in the face of the enemy, struck from the very metal of those cannons. It still carries her name, and a heavy legacy — the Victoria Cross. In the fierce fighting of 1917, 100 years ago, three Kiwi soldiers were awarded this ultimate accolade for their courage under fire. All three went above and beyond the call of duty to save the lives of their fellow soldiers. The London Gazette said this of the actions of Lance Corporal Samuel Frickleton: ‘Lance Corporal Frickleton dashed for ward at the head of his section, rushed through a barrage and personally destroyed with bombs an enemy machine gun and crew, which were causing heavy casualties. He then attacked the second gun, killing the whole of the crew of twelve. By the destruction of these two guns he undoubtedly saved his own and other units from ver y severe casualties’. Samuel Frickleton went on to serve in the Second World War with distinction as well. The same publication covered the bravery of Private Henry James Nicholas in the same year: ‘Private Nicholas was one of a Lewis gun section, which was checked by heavy machine-gun and rifle

fire. Private Nicholas rushed forward alone, shot the officer in command of the strongpoint, and overcame the remainder of the garrison of sixteen with bombs and bayonets, capturing four wounded prisoners and a machine gun. He captured this strongpoint practically single-handed, and thereby saved many casualties’. Corporal Leslie Andrew also earned the Victoria Cross for his actions in 1917. The London Gazette reported: ‘On leading his men forward he encountered unexpectedly a machine-gun post which was holding up the advance of another company; he immediately attacked, capturing the machine gun and killing several of the crew. He then continued the attack on the machine-gun post which had been his original objective. He displayed great skill and determination in his disposition, finally capturing the post, killing several of the enemy and putting the remainder to flight’. While thousands of ANZAC soldiers served with bravery, these three men epitomised the ethos behind the honour of the Victoria Cross. To this day, the unassuming medal forged from a captured cannon remains the ver y highest accolade given to Commonwealth troops during wartime.

In all services, in all conflicts, across 100 years, we pay our respects to the fallen.

Passchendaele is a name which still recalls the full horror of the Western Front, even 100 years on. It was the first and only time when the combined forces of First and Second Anzac Corps were committed side by side to an offensive, and though the battle itself raged for weeks, the single day which defines it in the Kiwi psyche is October 12 — rightly called ‘our darkest day’. The town of Passchendaele lies in the Flanders region of the European Low Countries and was strategically important to the German defenders as it held some of the scarce high ground in the area, commanding views and artillery lines of fire. After the victory at Messines, allied commanders were keen to press on, but a combination of bad timing, atrocious weather and stern enemy defence would come together to visit a punishing toll on the attacking elements of the Fifth Army, including the battle-hardened Anzac men. On September 20 the first of five projected ‘bites’ or targeted assaults was launched, a new tactic which threw the Germans into consternation. However, by the time the Anzac troops were in position for the fourth such ‘bite’ on October 4, conditions were harsh — ‘The mud is a worse enemy than the German’, divisional commander Sir Andrew Russell is quoted as saying — but despite 500 killed or mortally wounded, the Kiwis took their objective at Gravenstafel Spur, supporting the flank of the Australian advance. One of the dead was a legend in New Zealand — former All Blacks captain and member of the 1905 ‘originals’ Sergeant Dave Gallaher.

Through thick, sometimes waist-deep mud, the Anzac soldiers made their way up the spur and consolidated their hold. They found massed German casualties in the forward enemy trenches — evidence, they assumed, that not only had they foiled a massing German attack, but also that the artillery barrage launched ahead of their advance had decimated the foe, leaving them vulnerable. A landscape of devastation — the road to Passchendaele was erased by artiller y fire into a slurr y of mud and barbed wire

struggling to move into position, Field Marshall Haig strictly adhered to his timetable. The assault on Passchendaele went ahead unprepared, and the Anzacs paid a heavy price. Advancing soldiers met wire and obstacles uncleared by a sporadic, weak opening barrage on October 12. The mud slowed the advance, making the attackers an easy target. Then came the driving rain, blinding the allied troops as they came forward. Pinned down in rapidly filling shell craters, it was all the Anzacs could do to hold on. The toll was catastrophic. On this one day more than 3,700 New Zealanders were killed or wounded, 800 slain outright. So terrible

Their sacrifice will never fade from our memories.

was the carnage that the Germans agreed to a temporary truce to allow stretcher bearers into no man’s land. Both allied and enemy accounts of this battle note the horror of the mud and the ferocity of the fighting. It was a turning point for New Zealand, and for how we perceived warfare in general — no longer a crucible of glory, but a tragedy in which deeds of great valour shone out among a background of senseless horror. Today, 100 years on, the fields of Flanders are a touchstone for the memories of all those who served in this war and others, and the legacy of our darkest day is still felt in our nation’s attitude to war.

The stor y of the poppy In Flanders fields the poppies blow, between the crosses, row on row … The association of the red poppy with battlefield deaths as a symbol of remembrance stems from the fact that poppies were the first plant to grow in the churned up soil of soldiers graves on the Western Front during the First World War, most famously recalled in John McCrae’s poem ‘In Flanders Fields’. It was Moina Michael in America who promoted the poppy as a symbol of remembrance and French woman Madame E. Guerin who conceived the idea of the widows manufacturing artificial poppies in the devastated areas of northern France that could then be sold by veterans’ organisations worldwide to assist their own veterans as well as destitute French children. It was a result of the efforts of Michael and Guerin — both of whom became known endearingly as the ‘Poppy Lady’ that the poppy became an international symbol of remembrance. Poppy Day in New Zealand One of Madame Guerin’s representatives visited the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association in 1921 and an order for some 350,000 small and 16,000 large silk poppies was duly placed with Madame Guerin’s French Children’s League. Unlike in United Kingdom, Canada and Australia, the RSA did not hold its inaugural Poppy Appeal in association with Armistice Day 1921 (11 November). The reason for this is one of those quirks of history: the ship carrying the

poppies from France arrived too late for the scheme to be properly publicised, forcing the RSA to postpone the campaign until the day before ANZAC Day 1922. However, this decision established a historic precedent whereby the poppy became forever associated with ANZAC Day, thereby setting New Zealand apart from the rest of the world

where the poppy is associated with Remembrance Day. Today after 95 years, the now New Zealand-made RSA Poppy is a national icon. It is a fitting symbol of the RSA’s promotion of the welfare and remembrance of those who have served their country. Information provided by RNZRSA Historian Dr Stephen Clarke

Why wear a poppy: “Please wear a poppy,” the lady said and held one forth, but I shook my head then I stopped and watched how she’d fare. Her face was old and lined with care but beneath the scars the years had made there remained a smile that refused to fade. A boy came whistling down the street bouncing along on carefree feet. His smile was full of joy and fun. “Lady,” he said, “may I have one?” As she pinned it on I heard him say, “why do we wear a poppy today?” The lady smiled in her wistful way and answered, “This is Anzac Day. The poppy there is a symbol for the gallant men who died in the war and because they did, you and I are free. That’s why we wear a poppy you see.

I had a boy about your size with golden hair and big blue eyes. He loved to play, and jump and shout. Free as a bird he would race about. As years went on he learned and grew and became a young man as you will too. He was fine and strong with a boyish smile but he seemed with us such a little while. When war broke out he went away. I still remember his face that day. When he smiled at me and said, ‘goodbye I’ll be back soon so please don’t cry.’ But the war went on and he had to stay All I could do was wait and pray. His letters told of the awful fight I can see it still in my dreams at night. With tanks and guns and cruel barbed wire and mines and bullets, and bombs and fire.

FA R M I N G ADVERTORIAL

Livestock sales boost at Matakohe yards The NZ Farmers Livestock presence continues to grow in the Northland region with a new weekly livestock sale at the Matakohe sale yards targeting the dairy sector and to coincide with their monthly store sale. The weekly sale will run on Wednesdays at the Matakohe sale yards, starting at noon. It will include a mixture of prime cattle and boner cows. The sale, to which the public may consign livestock for sale by auction, is open to all farmers. The chance to cast an eye over livestock in real time, to meet with other farmers and to discuss the industry has definite appeal, and the chance to build a better herd is of course the intent. Regional manager Alan Swindlehurst is looking forward to providing more options to his clients. His 30 years of experience highlighted the need for a weekly sale like this — especially in a region where raising cattle has such a long and illustrious history. NZ Farmers Livestock expertise has continued to expand in Northland with a growing team establishing a NZ Farmers Livestock Northland base here. It’s a natural progression for the company, who have already built quite a reputation in the stock yards and paddocks of the rural Kiwi heartland. NZ Farmers Livestock is leading the industry in digital livestock exposure as well as keeping both boots on the ground in local sales. With the launch of mylivestock.co.nz and an app now available for download on tablets and smart phones, farmers can now access valuable livestock

NZ Farmers Livestock is proudly 100% New Zealand owned and operated, and has a long-standing and established history in the livestock market, networking and operating nationally for more than 90 years. That’s nine decades of absorbing the wisdom of old hands in the rural trade and combining it with the best innovations of the new — just the right recipe for good advice going into the future.
