 Thirty-nine past and present Save the Children volunteers gathered to enjoy lunch at the Northern Wairoa Hotel. Now the Northern Wairoa Save the Children store has closed the organisation wanted to thank the volunteers for the work they have done in the shop. Northland branch president Aym Wade says it was a humbling experience to see the number of volunteers that have been involved over the years and she says the group will still be active amongst the local community.

The Tatarariki Tennis Club’s junior programme had a successful season and coach David Cole says this is due to the commitment and support local schools have given to the sport.

“I have been coaching at schools in Dargaville for a few years and the momentum is building and the skills students are gaining are starting to show through,” said David. “The encouragement they are getting to participate in tennis events from their schools has made it much easier for them.” Junior tennis player Emma Pocklington has been playing since she was 12 years old. “When she first tried the sport her natural talent saw her make the tennis excellence class in 2014. She received two hours of coaching once a week for a term. She then joined the Tatarariki Tennis Club and hasn’t looked back. “Emma has the potential to go a long way. She is very talented at many sports and tennis is obviously one of her strong points. We have had 65 players aged between four and 18-years-

old at our club this season which is really encouraging.” David’s daughters Stephanie, Victoria and Carolyn have been playing since they were old enough to pick up a racquet. Carolyn has won several competitions including the Northern Wairoa year seven and eight girls’ doubles title backto-back, partnering with Francie Godfrey. Victoria and Emma won the Northland Secondary Schools Doubles Tournament and Victoria won the Northland 14-yearold girls Open. Stephanie won the Northland 16-year-old girls Closed and Open Tournaments. “Owen Cleary won the Intermediate School tournament and Sela Maake is doing great too. Her only coaching is at school and she came fourth in the year seven and eight singles and was runner up in the Dargaville Primary School singles. It is encouraging to see the players doing so well.” 

Dargaville resident Darlene Lang Gent will play an influential role in deciding how funds will be distributed to community groups throughout Northland following her appointment onto the Lottery Northland Community Committee. She will sit alongside Dargaville farmer and presiding member Neil Clements, Peter Jensen, Patsy Thornton and Gwen Te Pania-Palmer. Mrs Lang Gent was approached last year by the Department of Internal Affairs and was notified of her threeyear ministerial appointment earlier this month. “I’m looking forward to seeing what projects are going on in Northland and being able to help people achieve their goals by giving them funding,” she says. Celebrating 25 years  by Ann Morgan

Jean Johnson from Ray White Dargaville is celebrating 25 years in the real estate industry, which has been her passion — helping clients into their own homes has been a pleasure to her. “My real estate career started in East Auckland where I had owned a cake shop. We decided to move to Dargaville and I have enjoyed living my passion for real estate here,” said Jean. Only four real estate agencies operated here when she first arrived. “I wanted to provide open homes but that was not heard of so I organised signage and was the first in town to do open homes. “Sale and purchase agreements were done by carbon copies in those days. There were no faxes or photo copiers where  Jean Johnson is celebrating 25 years of real estate I worked at the time. The Northern Wairoa Senior Men’s Football team will play against University of Auckland at Memorial Park, Dargaville, as they compete for the first time in the Chatham Cup tournament to be held on Anzac Day. Beach access ‘is protected’  by Ann Morgan

A group of Mangawhai residents, protesting the proposed removal of Te Arai beach car park to make way for development, has suggested the move will prevent public access to the coastline. “It is an important part of our community. We are very concerned about the removal of the car park on Pacific Road as this is at the heart of the community,” said Save Te Arai chairman Aaron McConchie. The group believe developers for the Te Uri o Hau coastal project are attempting to privatise a large part of Te Arai beach by relocating the car park inland. This has been refuted by Te Uri o Hau. Chair of the iwi’s settlement trust Russell Kemp, says the car park is being shifted because it is currently located within the sensitive dune area which is part of the coastal reserve. “We have worked to reposition it on our private land at our cost. We are building a walkway for people to access the beach along with other facilities for the public. By shifting a car park and installing a walkway, it

will be far more difficult for people to get trail bikes and 4WDs onto the beach. “We have protected the entire Te Arai Beach frontage and other sensitive ecological areas for the community and achieved significant gains for the environment. Endangered shorebirds are doing much better.” 

Malcolm and Jo Roberts decided to take a mini break from their home in Mangawhai and visit Dargaville, keeping things local.

Team Med Heads from the Dargaville Medical Centre participated in the Shave for a Cure fundraising event last week and pulled out the clippers to remove their locks.

“We read in the Kaipara Lifestyler about the different tourism ventures in and around Dargaville, including the Dargaville Rail Cart Tours and thought we should go and see that side of the Kaipara for a change and go on the carts,” said Jo. “We arrived the night before our tour to make the most of our trip and we stayed at the Commercial Bed and Breakfast on  Malcolm and Jo Roberts from Mangawhai on the Dargaville Rail Cart Tour the river. Kaiwaka’s gigantic pumpkin New lead nurse

Kaiwaka School student Lincoln Morgan smashed all previous records at the annual school Giant Pumpkin Growing Competition this year with his ‘Big Boy’ entry which weighed in at 93 kilograms.

Hospice Kaipara Inc have welcomed lead clinical nurse Annette Olsen to the team. The area Annette will help cover is from the Waipoua Forest through to Pouto, Tangowahine Valley and Paparoa.

“The last record was 72 kilograms. It was a challenging season this year for the pumpkin growers with many unconfirmed and outrageous claims made, mainly by teachers, of pumpkins reaching prize-winning weights before exploding or rotting in the humid weather,” said principal Rosie Ellis. “We have been running the competition for at least five years now. It was started by some keen parents who still run the event for us.” The seeds are planted in Spring and the competition is held in April. “The local vet supplies the scales for weighing and then we have the hill roll event. We see which pumpkin rolls the greatest distance and the seeds are then collected and saved to give to growers the following year. “My husband and I have moved home to Dargaville. I recently worked at Totara Hospice in South Auckland where I was for just over a year,” said Annette. “Prior to that I was a district nurse. Otamatea High School hosted the Te Tai Tokerau Festival 2016 last week, showcasing the kapa haka talents of youth from 30 schools participating in the event which coincided with the school’s 50 year celebrations.

kapa haka festival highlighted the might of our local community. The school field was alive with people who were enjoying the day and participating in Maori games, family entertainment, food and information stalls. “After months of planning and work preparing for the festival, Otamatea High School is proud of the result of the innovations that we implemented.” She said safeguarding the Te reo language was

promoted through the engaging of bilingual MCs and sign language interpreters. They protected the land through the zero waste initiative and the people through the promotion of good health and educational planning. “The festival was a fantastic way of unifying all facets of our community and we would like to thank our sponsors for supporting the kaupapa and powering the waka.” 

Children in Wellsford tested their endurance and perseverance during Wellsford School’s Try-athlon. The event has been running for three years and focuses on personal challenge rather than competing against others. Sixty year-zero to -one children completed a 400m run, 300m bike and a 15m swim whilst 100 year-two to -four children completed a 1,200m bike, 400m run and a 150m swim. “As part of our health and physical education curriculum, we have been learning about having active lifestyles and setting goals. At our school we are lucky enough to have a 20-metre solar-heated pool and a large bike track, with a set of school bikes,” said teacher Ngadia Jones. “We have

Wellsford War Memorial Library is opening its doors to musicians next month and they’re hoping it will draw in a crowd as well. Wellsford Library manager Megan Livick says they wanted to do something to celebrate New Zealand Music Month, so librarian Gene Nicolson came up with the idea to invite local musicians to play. Megan says it’s about getting the community engaged with the library and so far they’ve had two local groups come forward to say they will perform on separate Saturday mornings to coincide with the adjacent markets, but she welcomes more. “We certainly invite others to come forward. I think libraries are becoming a real community space now and are allowing members to use the space as a place to showcase their talents.”

She says musicians will be able to choose between playing in the lounge area of the library, where she says there is a nice ambience, or outdoors. For more information: 09 423 7702. 
