High hopes for new crop u by Paul Campbell

A Kaipara harvest is about to become peanut butter in a development hailed as “new and exciting and putting the ‘kai’ back into Kaipara,” as a trial production gets underway in a collaboration between commercial interests and the Ministry for Primary Industries.

“Some 60 kilograms have been harvested from the small trial plots near Dargaville,” says Pic’s Peanut Butter CEO, Stuart Macintosh. “I am taking 20 kilograms of these to Nelson, where we are based, to begin the process of trialling into our product — trying to make peanut butter. The taste test is an important step, and I am pretty confident.” Kaipara Mayor Jason Smith says the harvest marks a “new and exciting celebration of putting the kai back into Kaipara demonstrating the district’s potential for new production.” He added that a combination of projects now underway, including water storage and irrigation, fitted together to enhance regional potential. ”It’s action on the ground for the future crop development in the Kaipara,” said Dr Smith. The peanut trial involves Kaipara Kai and Plant and Food, who with Pic’s are looking to create a totally homegrown peanut product in the warm Northland soils instead of relying on costly imports. “We will plan a larger trial for next year, as we plan to check the values of other peanut varieties, and it may take more seasons, too,” said Mr McIntosh. Plant and Food Research science manager Declan Graham says he’d like to see several hectares planted in Kaipara and see an alternative cropping option for Northland. Growers could expect returns of “around $3,000 per tonne after drying and deshelling and sorting, which we

do not have a cost for because peanut processing is not yet done in NZ,” he said. ”We would aim for three to four tonnes per hectare, with more on irrigated land.” Pic’s Peanut Butter owner, Pic Picot, says the trials have the potential to reduce the company’s carbon footprint by redirecting millions of dollars spent on importing peanuts to growing them as well as substantially boosting local employment prospects. In another local development, KDC’s Kaipara Kai is inviting local food-related businesses to six business workshops designed to market product profitably. The result for those who participate will be a path-to-market action plan.

‘The purpose of the programme is to support Kaipara Kai Hub clients to build a solid business model and make money by getting your products into the hands of consumers,’ reads the invitation. ‘When: 11am to 1pm every Wednesday from May 5 until June 2. You can attend in person, online or catch up later by watching the recording. Sign up by emailing hello@kaiparakaihub. nz by May 3. Those who sign up before April 21 will be able to have a say in what the workshops cover and who the guest speakers are. Northland Inc has engaged local start-up business advisers, Get Better Problems, to deliver this programme.’ ¢

Once in a lifetime flower  Meet Agave geminiflora, a rare succulent related to asparagus and the ‘tequila cactus’, the blue agave. This spiky character hails from the dry and hilly Nayarit region of Mexico, but one, at least, thrives in Dargaville. We know because it’s recently flowered, sending up a six to seven-metre tall spike, which will eventually be covered in tiny yellow flowers. In their natural habitat, these would be pollinated by hummingbirds and moths. Frustrated bees buzz around the huge flower spike in Dargaville, unable to get inside. The geminiflora only flowers once before dying, so this display is the final curtain for the exotic plant.

New funding group sought Robust response to LTP u by Paul Campbell

u by Andy Bryenton

After raising $200,000 from the sale of donated and secondhand goods from The Den, the town’s old Scout Hall, towards Maungaturoto’s soon to be completed multimillion-dollar dementia unit, local identity, Albie Paton is calling for help.

The Kaipara District Council’s Long Term Plan has received a large number of written submissions, as robust debate and discussion surrounds the core articles of the plan’s proposal document.

A public meeting at the Maungaturoto Country Club has now appointed a working party to look into the formation of a new community trust or foundation to oversee future fundraising operations. Minutes from the meeting state: ‘Albie has realised that many people around him have passed away and he needs to spend valuable time with his wife Marge, to go some places and do a few things while they can.’ The occasion also saw the presentation of a certificate of achievement to mark the latest $40,000 from The Den to the Maungaturoto Community Charitable Trust, overseeing the dementia unit project. “The Den needs to be set up in a way that is more robust,” Mr Paton told the meeting. “I am presently the sole trader of The Den, and this needs to change to safeguard the funds going forward. A new trust will have principles that stay in place forever. “This will need to have a clear vision of where the funds will be spent and clearly stated in a deed of trust as well as where they will be used in a defined geographic area.” As well as helping fund the 14-bed dementia unit, the Den has also helped

More than 240 written submissions were received when the KDC called for residents to get involved in local democracy. Now, a series of live hearings will allow contributors to make their case for specific policy changes and future development. “While analysis is ongoing, most of the council’s preferred options were supported,” says KDC communications and engagement manager Gillian Bruce. “Those wishing to, will be given a chance to speak on their submissions before elected members before council.” Councillors will then get down to the task of creating the Long Term Plan, balancing the operating decisions that are necessary for the district as a whole with the desires of communities and individuals to build a better Kaipara. The timeline for this process is now set, with hearings in Mangawhai at the Mangawhai Club on April 20 and 21, and in Dargaville’s town hall on April 22 and 23. Those who wish to make a formal presentation have been booked into five-minute time slots to present their case in support

A survey, which runs through until May 9, has been launched and can be accessed by visiting the KDC offices or its website, kaipara.govt.nz. The survey asks residents what kind of activities they partake in when visiting the Ripiro coast, incorporating Baylys Beach, Mahuta Gap, Pouto Point and Glinks Gully. They are asked to identify both positives and examples of antisocial behaviour, including reckless driving and speeding. Beachgoers are encouraged to have their say, as the outcome may inform council decisions on future permitted beach use. Kaipara District Council councillor David Wills was already concerned about the impact of vehicles on the Ripiro beachfront when he requested a comprehensive report in late 2020. “Our comparatively light-handed regulation could lead to Kaipara becoming a destination for significant numbers of off-roaders forced from their local beaches,” said Councillor Wills. “We need to consider if this is a desirable outcome and what the ramifications may be.”

Caring for cats and kittens

Dog bylaws working well

u by Andy Bryenton

u by Andy Bryenton

Dargaville’s Wendy Cocurullo has been looking after the town’s stray cats and kittens for five years now and says that the best thing caring pet owners can do for their animals is to spay or neuter them early.

A recent report to the Kaipara District Council reveals that new dog management bylaws, backed up by a new in-house team of animal control officers, are working well across the district, with only minor changes needed to quell confusion.

“Since last October, we have had close to 50 kittens through here,” she says, amid the cages, food bowls and climbing towers that fill the downstairs of her family home. “Like most animal rescue people, I do it out of kindness, and it’s just me right now; there is no official cat rescue charity or service in Dargaville.” The current crop of tiny felines come in every colour and pattern. “Council’s current policy and bylaw were adopted on June 27 2019. At that meeting, council also directed the chief executive to undertake a review of the effectiveness of the policy and bylaw and to report back to council,” says policy analyst Mark Schreurs. He was the reporting officer to a KDC briefing meeting on April 7. “Originally, this report was requested for July 2020, but due to delays in implementing the bylaw, particularly around signs, the report was deferred to April 2021 to include the 2020/2021 summer period.” The review came back with a pass mark for the council’s policy and bylaw, confirming that the most common complaints about canine behaviour remain dog fouling and faecal waste disposal and wandering dogs. Dargaville locals, asked about their opinion of the current status quo under the in-house animal control officer’s watch, say that they are more satisfied with the KDC’s efforts than with those of previous service providers Armourguard, who were hampered by their remote location in Whangarei when it came to rapid response to dog-related issues in the Kaipara.

p Keeping man’s best friend friendly — a recent review of the effectiveness of dog management bylaws has given a positive review of how the rules are working in practice

During their tenure, for example, one citizen was forced to wait for more than 90 minutes detaining a dog that had menaced schoolchildren. The only areas for clarification pinpointed by the report centre on signage at dog exercise areas in the beachside settlements of Mangawhai and Pahi. In both cases, confusion has been expressed regarding ‘on leash’ and ‘off leash’ permitted dog exercise times and zones. The recommendation was made to increase the visibility of signage to help make sharing the space easier for all. ¢

Councils move on climate change

Wild Kiwi event grows stronger

A joint Northland local authority committee has met to begin a strategy to fight climate change and approach “the largest environmental challenge of our time.”

Organisers of the Northpower Wild Kiwi multi-sports event believe it is back on track to attract 1,000 competitors within two years after this year’s successful event followed last year’s cancellation due to the Covid pandemic.

Total Sport’s Mark Fordham says after the postponement of 2020, it bounced back with 740 competitors in 2021 — 10 people shy of the record turnout, including Mangawhai entrant, Brook Clements finishing on his crutches. “Brook did eight kilometres on crutches because he got between a cow and calf before lockdown last year, helping his mate get stock away from floodwaters. The cow smashed his leg up big time, and he only recently had the operation to fix all the damage. “The introduction of the Mild Kiwi Multisport of 5km kayak, 18km mountain bike and 10km run event for the first time this year is where we believe we will see a lot of growth in 2022,” says Mr Fordham. Relaxing by the riverside u by Andy Bryenton

Dargaville’s first river festival was held on Saturday, with a large crowd showing up to celebrate the importance of the Northern Wairoa River to the history and culture of the town. With music, a market day, plenty of delicious food and a chance to cruise the muddy waters, there was entertainment for young and old, as well as ample opportunity to snap a photo with special guests, the River Queen and Tane the Taniwha, the mascot of northern rugby.

p The River Queen and Tane were there for the launching of the waka ama and met up with local community sports advocate Chris Fife

p Children in costume took part in the festivities, dressed in a river theme, and at the end of the day, the most colourful and creative received prizes from the River Queen herself

p Dalmatian culture was on display as an orchestra and dancers in traditional costume performed songs from south-eastern Europe; a land from whence many of our Dargaville neighbours trace their ancestry

Pines petition gathers pace

OPINION

Remember their sacrifice u by Deb Wright

‘Lest we forget’ and ‘gone but not forgotten’ are just some of the phrases used to remember our fallen men and women in the service of our country and freedom. Anzac Day is an important day on our calendar, a time to reflect on what others have done during the years to ensure we have the rights and freedoms that we have today. When I think about what Anzac means, it is apparent that it’s about our spirit and our willingness to do what is right for others. Sometimes others who haven’t been able to do it for themselves, at whatever cost. That no longer just applies to the military. It’s also about our selfless emergency servicemen and women, most of whom are volunteers, especially in small communities. They see us at our most vulnerable, attending car accidents, fires or helping families dealing with the loss of a loved one. They are there for so many other emergencies, often seeing injuries that are horrendous and thinking ‘if only they had worn their seat belt’ or if only they had taken a nap, or hadn’t had that drink’. On the other side of this service, there are also the amazing employers of these volunteers. People who support their staff and communities by allowing them to leave work every time the call

goes out. In the war against crime we have the police trying to uphold justice. No, they don’t always get it right, and like any organisation, there are those that are not there for the right reasons, but those that are put themselves in harm’s way every day trying to protect us and what is precious to us. They do it with care and understanding, often in very difficult circumstances. Medical staff are also fighters. Emergency rooms seem like ground zero when they are dealing with drug overdoses, drunks, fights, medical emergencies and all the time trying to treat what can often be a very difficult situation with empathy — even when they are being spat at or assaulted. I don’t know about you, but this is what the Anzac spirit means to me. It’s about anyone that puts another’s life before their own; it’s about selfless acts of heroism. Our military service people showed the way. Now it’s up to us to follow their example and be mindful of those that are doing what they need to do to take care of us. The Maungaturoto Country Club recently added disc golf and orienteering to add the activities available at the facility in time for the school holidays.

The Empire Luncheonette is a name with a colourful history in Dargaville, and its latest incarnation is thriving on a combination of old-fashioned values and retro-chic creativity.

“Disc golf is a recreational game with a similar set up to a golf course but using frisbee like discs instead of a golf club and ball,” says Tina Holst. “We have sessions on Thursday afternoons at 4.30pm until dark where you can borrow discs to use. If you have your own discs, the course is open for the public to use at any time when the walkway is open from October through to mid-July.“ The course is within the country club grounds, with discs available for purchase from the country club. Course maps are displayed on the Maungaturoto Country Club Facebook page. “The orienteering course is now open and ready to explore as well. Owner and ‘first among equals’ on the Empire team, Christine Marychurch has moved the Empire from its oldestablished space in front of what was once Dargaville’s vintage cinema. The new locale has meant a new team, who Christine acknowledges as irreplaceable contributors to the Empire’s success. Now the cafe has been refurbished with a wide-open and spacious feel as well. “It’s like my home, really,” says Christine. “After 30 years away from Dargaville, I wanted to create a space where people could relax and feel comfortable. As for the upcycled

furniture and artworks, well, I love to give new life to old things.” The menu remains old-fashioned, with hearty servings of luncheonettestyle ‘Kiwi classics’ done properly. A new addition is an art gallery showcasing glassworks, paintings, jewellery and sculpture from local artists. This feast for the eyes will be joined in the summer months by a feast of a more literal kind, as a fresh section of the building is converted into an old traditional 50s ice cream parlour, bringing back the sundae, banana split and frosted malt to Dargaville.  ¢

FISHING & HUNTING

Anglers seek kahawai catch u by Andy Bryenton

This weekend will see anglers from all across the north descending on the west coast of the Kaipara to view for glory and a legendary catch. The Kauri Coast Surfcasting Classic promises large cash prizes to catch the biggest kahawai. The first rule of battle, according to the Chinese master strategist Sun Tzu, is to know your enemy. In this battle of man versus fish, we’re armed with the latest in lightweight surfcasting rods and precision-crafted reels, cunning baits and deadly hooks. How about Arripis trutta, however? That’s the scientific name of the kahawai, which narrowly avoided getting lumbered with the inaccurate and wrong-side-of-the-ditch handle of Australian salmon. Failing to claim this migratory, schooling fish in the same way they’ve gone after pavlova and Phar Lap, our Aussie mates are content to angle for the kahawai from as far south as Tasmania to as far north as Norfolk Island. The species is prevalent all around the North Island of New Zealand, and is our second most caught game

fish after the ubiquitous snapper. Long-term studies have been made of the diet of the kahawai, mainly because their changing habits form a record of oceanic warming. Big adults tend to enjoy squid, while those in their middle size and life go after small pelagic (free-swimming) bait fish. Kahawai is a favourite snack, in turn, of sharks that herd the giant schools toward the surface like grey and toothy sheepdogs. When this happens, the bait fish, the kahawai are following, break the surface, creating a feast for seabirds. The white-fronted tern has even picked up the name ‘kahawai bird’ due to its habit of feeding on these small fish as they flee. The kahawai is a migratory fish, and might travel thousands of kilometres in its lifetime between its juvenile stage and spawning.

FISHING & HUNTING

Hunters gear up for 2021 u by Andy Bryenton

After a disrupted duck shooting season in 2020 due to Covid, hunters across the Kaipara are keen to get out on to local wetlands for the start of the 2021 season on May 1. The disruption to the usual seasonal hunting pattern in 2020 means that many are anticipating a strong showing this year, with robust bird numbers coming into mid-autumn. Fish and Game Northland advises that there are different bag limits for mallard and grey duck as opposed to paradise shelduck, with the first open for hunting until June 27 with a limit of 12 a day, while the latter are fair game until August 1, with a bag limit of 10 a day. The big message from Fish and Game: get your licence early and don’t forget. Hefty fines await unlicensed shooters, and licence fees go toward environmental measures, protecting and rebuilding wetlands for future duck hunting enjoyment. Hunting and Fishing Dargaville owner Jason Campbell says that technology has advanced a long way in the quest to deceive ducks with decoys. The sharp-eyed birds are apt to spot a poor imitation. Modern decoys have been developed to mimic the feeding

behaviours of ducks, complete with animatronic components powered by solar and rechargeable batteries. Old-fashioned measures such as reedcovered blinds, wetland camouflage and handcrafted duck calls are also in the hunter’s arsenal. To show off the latest,

Jason will host a duck hunter’s night on April 21, inviting shooters to share tips and tricks, inspect the state of the art in decoys and calls, and perhaps even win a prize or two. It will also be the first uninterrupted year when new firearms legislation

restricts the use of some hunters’ favourite shotguns. Guns that have too large a magazine or which otherwise fail to comply with the changes to the gun laws can still be handed back to police during the extended amnesty period, through to August 1. ¢

Cinema treats for children This school holiday season, some classic characters are coming back to the big screen, with names and stories that even parents and grandparents will recognise. The Anzac Theatre in Dargaville is all set to deliver family entertainment via a list of new movies. Chief among them for young film fans are Tom and Jerry and Peter Rabbit 2. Peter Rabbit would be 128 years old this year if he wasn’t a cartoon character, and hence forever young. Beatrix Potter first wrote about the mischievous bunny’s exploits in 1893, and animators turned him into a computer-generated film star in 2018. Now he’s back. Peter Rabbit 2 follows the story after he and his human neighbours are reconciled. However, a trip to the city and a chance meeting with an old family friend set off a chain of hilarious events, culminating in a dramatic rescue mission. James Corden returns as the voice of Peter, and his animal friends are brought to life by the vocal talents of an all-star cast, including Sam Neill, Daisy Ridley and musician Sia, to name but a few. Two more characters with a long history of entertainment get their own film debut these holidays as well. Tom and Jerry were first introduced in 1940 and starred in 161 short cartoons.

p Young artist Jade Stott won family tickets to any school holiday film at the Anzac Theatre in Dargaville after being picked as the winner of our recent Easter colouring in contest

This is the first time the quick-witted mouse Jerry and irrepressible stray cat Tom have graced the big screen in a full-length film. The story follows the animated pair as they move into a suburban home. When their human ‘family’ are threatened, Tom and Jerry must set aside their differences and team up to save the day. ¢

Strike on a new experience The school holidays are a perfect excuse to gather the family and try out something new. With outdoor pursuits not possible on every day of the traditionally wet and windy April break, why not make it tenpin bowling? A sport that’s fun and easy to grasp but which takes skill and practise to master, there’s something utterly satisfying about watching your ball roll straight and true to send the pins flying. Tenpin bowling has a long history and is usually associated with its birthplace in the United States, where top bowlers

are millionaire athletes. Lawn bowls was seen as a sport for the wealthy British and French lords of 17th-century Europe, while the ‘Dutch bowling’ game with pins was invented by sailors. The shape of the pins and the heavy ball rolled on wood give its origins away. Unlike lawn bowls, the dutch sailors played on the

decks of ships, using cannonballs to score a ‘strike’ against a rank of wooden blocks, the kind used to help stow round cargo like barrels. These folks brought the alternative game to America with the founding of New Amsterdam, now New York City. When Washington defeated the British, all things connected with the royals were considered unfashionable and un-American. George Washington himself planted trees on his lawn bowling green and gave up the sport. However, many turned to the Dutch game instead. By the 1820s ‘ball and ten pin alleys’ were set up next to bars and pubs all across America, a popular sport for men to play when they were enjoying a cold

beer. The first modern bowling alley was the Knickerbocker Lanes in New York, an indoor set up similar to those we play on today. There were no machines to reset the pins; young children were employed for the task, waiting for the ball to careen past before they reset the pins by lamplight. In 1895 the rules of modern tenpin bowling were finally agreed upon. From that day forth, it’s become a popular sport that allows people young and old to enjoy a friendly challenge. With the bonus of being indoors and none too strenuous compared to games like rugby or ice hockey, it’s also become a family favourite. ¢

Winter’s wild weather tamed u by Andy Bryenton

The rains have begun, perhaps not yet enough, and perhaps not in the right places. The season has turned, and with daylight saving gone, it’s a cold, wet start for many farmers in the morning. It will be the same story for duck hunters heading out soon for the start of the season, but thankfully for all those who must be out in the wild and wet of late autumn, solutions are at hand. While it’s not possible to go everywhere in your trusty ute or SUV with the heater on, there are options to go further on four wheels this season. When it comes to decking out a proper, designed-for-purpose off-roader to tackle grim weather, it’s worth looking at a sideby-side configuration machine like the 2021 Can-Am Defender. The underpinnings of the Defender HD are well known to farmers and hunters. It’s a reliable package right out of the showroom for hard work on the land, and there’s little in the way of rough terrain that can slow it down. However, for winter, there are several tricks and add-ons that can make this supremely competent side-by-side a nicer place to be than out on a quad or two-wheeler in oilskins.

HVSLIMITED

First up, there’s the option to completely enclose the cabin. With a tilting windscreen, wipers, a roof, doors with electric windows and even window washers, it’s possible to turn the CanAm’s driving and passenger area into a pod of comfort that deflects even the most ‘sideways’ rain. There’s even the option for vents, which ‘defog’ the screen in cold and misty conditions. To tackle the early starts and hours of extended darkness, Can-Am has the ability to mount powerful light bars atop the roof and hood or augment the existing headlights with hunting spots or running lamps. More than just providing mounting points, the engineers at Can-Am have made sure the electrical system is up for it, enabling a battery of illumination that can light up a dark paddock like midday. This is great for finding a path but can be even more useful in an emergency when shedding light on a critical task is essential.

p Defender HD comes with options to banish rain, dark and cold, making winter warming and hunting excursions more comfortable

Beyond this, there’s a bewildering array of boxes, coolers, racks, bumpers, bash plates, rock slider beams, nudge bars, gun mounts for safely transporting firearms to a hunting area, and even

radio communication and GPS options. For a comfortable winter ahead, take a look at how you could turn the already very capable Defender HD into an allweather, multi-terrain work of genius. ¢

The Ram and the Kiwi u by Andy Bryenton

Eighty-five years ago, it was tough to get a new car in New Zealand. The prewar years were a time when shipping automotive steel halfway around the world meant that Kiwi mechanics really did have to use ‘spit, gumption and number eight wire’ to keep the road fleet moving. That’s why, when Boon and Company of Christchurch decided to import cars in pieces to be assembled by their new partnership, they picked a set of machines known for their simple durability rather than their speed or power. South Island dealerships Amuri Motors, PH Vickery, and Cossens and Black teamed up with Boon to establish a factory in St Asaph Street, where they began to produce one of the best cars ever built in New Zealand. Looking at it today, the six-volt electrics and single-action hydraulic brakes of the old 1935 and 1936 Dodge seem antiquated, but at the time, they were state of the art. Clever design and what were, at the time, cutting-edge aerodynamic styling cues also made this big four-door a popular choice. Under the hood, you’d find a very simple 87hp, 218 cubic inch six-cylinder engine, lowslung under a high, split cowling with a narrow radiator grille and a high-topped radiator assembly to keep it cool. There was no fancy gearbox wizardry, either; matching speeds and ratios was part of learning to drive the Dodge. None of this put off customers, who snapped up examples made by the Christchurch

Motor Assemblies firm. By the time the first shots of the second world war were heard, they’d planned to build a new factory, a three-acre storage yard and even a test track. Dodge cars were outselling their other British Standard marque. At the same cost of around £350, you could have either the smaller, woodframed Standard with a little four-pot

engine or the big, spacious Dodge with its reverse-opening limousine doors in the back and that indefatigable six up front. Just how reliable was the simple, bare-bones grandaddy of the Hemi V8s? Well, take a look on Trademe’s motor sales site right now, and there are three warranted, registered examples for sale, still going strong after 85 years. ¢

After forty plus years in real estate, I thought I had seen everything. But the past little while has been quite a surprise and what with low interest rates, low supply and high buyer demand, there has been never been a better time to bring a property to market. I can help you sell your property. I have a wealth of experience in the industry and I am passionate and dedicated to my work. And as you might expect after forty plus years, I am well-connected and highly informed. Come and see me and my loyal support team anytime. I look forward to selling your property.
