Surrounded by inflatable boardings and provided with helmets and gloves it was the safest possible way to try ice skating. MoreFM completed the experience with music and a bubble machine. “The plastic flooring has 97% the same feel as natural ice. Each day it is vacuumed and polished, and the safety barriers reinflated,” said Ice Skate Tours representative Geoff Thomas. “Normal skating blades are used.” Silver Fern Farms provided refreshments, and shopping stalls were available for non-skaters. Roading decision ‘cuts lifeline’ u by Ayla Miller

The government’s decision to scrap the proposed four-lane highway from Wellsford to Whangarei cuts a vital lifeline and will have a significant negative impact on the regional economy, according to Northland MP Matt King and Kaipara mayor Jason Smith.

Transport Minister, Phil Twyford, announced last week that the four-laning of State Highway One between Auckland and Northland will not go ahead, saying that instead, extensive improvements and safety measures are planned for the

existing highway. Mr King says although a dual carriageway is more costly initially — they pay ‘huge dividends in the long run. “For us, that motorway to Northland is our lifeline. It is vital for us, and it

has been identified as the biggest driver of growth in Northland. The coalition government has told Northlanders they don’t care,” he said. continued on page 3 …

p Dargaville’s Lotto luck continued last Saturday, April 14 with another winning first division ticket bought this time from the Dargaville Four Square in Victoria Street. The ticket was one of four to win $250,000 and was sold to a local resident according to employee, Varinder Singh. Lotto spokesperson, Jessica O’Sullivan, confirmed the prize had been claimed but was unable to say if the lucky winner was a local person. “It’s a good start to a Sunday morning for them.” In February a winning ticket was sold by Countdown Dargaville with a first division prize win of $1,000,000.

Roading decision ‘cuts lifeline’ “You can’t just update an old road and expect it to do the job. There are a huge amount of factors as to why the dual carriageway roads are so good for the lifeblood of the country.” A group of Northland mayors and the chairman of the Northland Regional Council met with Transport Minister Phil Twyford in Wellington last week, where he told them he could not promise four lanes or a median barrier for the State Highway One from Wellsford to Whangarei. He agreed the road is dangerous and needs improvement in some parts. “It is an economic lifeline for the north, and the road is dangerous in parts and needs a lot of work done on it. There’s no question about that. We talked about the road in detail. Work will continue on State Highway One. It must be improved and it will,” Mr Twyford said. Mayor Jason Smith says he and the other Northland mayors were disappointed the highway was not a priority for the government. “I expressed clearly to the minister we have people commuting to Auckland every day from as far north as Ruawai on the existing State Highway One, and the safety of those people is very important. “The four-lane highway is the top economic development priority and is key to social development for Northland. It’s also very important for safety and tourism. “The current road is a very dangerous road, and we are all very concerned. We don’t want any lives lost on the

dangerous road between Northland and Auckland. “We have indicated we will be working with the government regarding meeting the Kaipara’s and Northland’s ongoing roading developments and we will continue with that.” Road Safety campaigner Suzie Reyland from Matakohe was also discouraged by the announcement. “The National government were making such wonderful progress and had plans in action for many roads of national significance. Basically the new government is turning it’s back on regional development.” ¢

Dargaville Community Surveillance project manager, Diane Miller, says the community have been very supportive of this project. “We have been impressed with volunteer interest, and screening is underway for a long list of applicants. The opportunity to do something for the community and help police to be proactive in their crime prevention efforts is what has attracted a number of people to assist. “Recruiting for and managing a roster of this size is no easy task, and we anticipate it to evolve as the project progresses.” Dargaville Community Development Board chair, Allan Mortensen, says it

is ‘pleasing’ to see it coming together. “The current plan is to have all the cameras covered by another camera so anyone who tries to interfere with the system will be recorded.” The Dargaville Business Forum will hold information evenings with a chance to see the system operating in the coming weeks and updated information on the DBF Facebook page. The project has been supported by Kaipara District Council, Lottery Community and Pub Charity. There will also be further updates regarding recruitment of people to man the 24/7 roster based at the Dargaville Police Station. ¢

Four decades on the road

A low speed chase

u by Andy Bryenton

u by Jill Dickie

Ruawai Transport have served the Kaipara district for close to four decades, a long haul behind the wheel.

A Kaiwaka couple experienced quite a change in their usual routine on the night of April 15 when they recognised a stolen tractor being driven along the road outside their property.

p From one group of professionals to another, the ingoing and outgoing management shake hands on a new chapter

Right now Ruawai Transport is in transition, handing operations over to experienced transport and quarry operators McRobbie Dowling. On April 28, all Ruawai Transport’s loyal customers are invited to an appreciation luncheon, and a chance to meet and greet new manager John Meekin. Back in 1979, good friends Brian (Ringy) Ringrose and Barry Mockett partnered to launch the business; later acquiring Mr Grenville Thurston’s limestone quarry. The stage was set for roading projects, farm races and tracks, and of course for vital fertiliser operations. The fleet of trucks evolved from Commers to Mitsubishis,

and grew to include rollers, graders and roadworks machines, and a big D9 bulldozer to tackle work at the quarry face. Ruawai Transport has handled hay bales through to palm kernel — 60,000 hay bales in one year alone! In 2005 they rebuilt the fertiliser shed in strong concrete to continue the distribution of lime from Kai Iwi lakes clear down to Pouto for years to come. The entire Ruawai Transport team, Brian, Barry and their wives Karen and Susan offer their heartfelt thanks to all their customers, family and friends for nearly 40 years of support both in business and in rural life. ¢

The orange-coloured Kubota B2710 was stolen from a shed at the Kaiwaka Sports Association complex, where Mr Mark Ottaway works as the groundsman and is the club’s vice chairman. Mr Ottaway and his wife pursued the fleeing vehicle, at the same time, updating police. “When we caught up, he had the lights on and the hazards going but he was only going 12km/h. There were lights and sirens, and he still wouldn’t pull over. He was swerving all over the road at some points ,” Mr Ottaway said. A 20km pursuit followed when

the 15-year-old driver refused to stop for police. After 90 minutes the driver was tasered and arrested in Wellsford where two more police vehicles were waiting to assist. As he arrived on the scene Mr Ottaway was happy to see the tractor, which the club has used for up to 15 years, was not damaged and made arrangements to have it delivered back to Kaiwaka. On Wednesday, April 19 Mark and his wife Pam received a special presentation at the Kaiwaka Sports Awards evening in recognition of their late night escapade. ¢

Safe space for road safety

5

u by Ayla Miller

A patch of land that was destined to be sold by council is to be turned into a safe place for children to ride their bikes and learn about road rules.

Network News Preparing for power outages It’s important to ensure you are well prepared for storms or other situations that may affect your power supply. We always do our best to get your power back on as safely and quickly as possible but in big storms there can be lengthy delays. Civil Defence has some great guidelines on how to prepare for an emergency and it’s a good idea to put together an emergency survival and getaway kit (go to getthru.govt.nz for ideas). What should I do before a power outage? • Ensure you have enough drinking water to last three days. Fill buckets and baths (if you have one) for washing and toilet flushing. • Keep your mobile phone charged. Make sure you have a car charger for your devices to keep in touch and be informed – along with a fully charged battery bank.

In 2015, the Maungaturoto Residents Association urged the Kaipara District Council to donate the unused section of land on View Street to the community for a children’s park, and were successful in their application late last year, when it was granted a licence to ensure the space is kept as a green area. Local parent and vice president of the Maungaturoto Residents Association, Paul Chambers, came up with the concept as there was already a park in the area, but nothing for children at the other end of town. “We were thinking about how to make the town better, and there’s a large demographic that would use this facility,” said Paul. “It’s a long way to walk with small children from that end of the town to the park.” The project, which was driven by the residents association, has been in Maungaturoto Storage containers

NRC SMART INFORMATION WITH NORTHLAND REGIONAL COUNCILLOR KAIPARA WARD, PENNY SMART A BIG THANK YOU TO EVERYONE IN KAIPARA THAT SUBMITTED TO OUR LONG TERM PLAN. successfully secured matching-funding from EXCITING PLANS FOR OUR OUTSTANDING NORTHLAND LAKES the Ministry for the Environment’s Freshwater Twelve of Northland’s dune lakes have been assessed as being ecologically ‘outstanding’. Lake Management Plans for these lakes are now complete and available online to the public. They include the three Kai Iwi Lakes (Lakes Kai Iwi, Taharoa and Waikare, all featured in one plan together) and Lakes Humuhumu, Rotokawau, Kanono and Mokeno on the Pōuto Peninsula. The plans take the form of a review of physical, chemical, biological and social/ cultural features of each lake. Time series data from decades of NRC water quality monitoring is presented in graphs and is related to national water quality limits. Although the data often shows fluctuation in water quality, it is difficult to pinpoint the causes of these events, as data on land-use practices in the lake catchments is not always available. However, the general activities which may contribute to water quality decline are well known. Stock access to waterbodies, runoff from farmland, forestry harvest, waterlevel declines, the effects of introduced waterweeds and pest fish all combine to affect both water quality and the health of plants and animals living in the lakes, some now threatened. The lake plans outline a suggested work implementation plan for each lake. The NRC

Improvement Fund to implement many of the action points. The project will include control/eradication of key waterweeds and pest fish, removal of grass carp where they have been used for weed management, sediment detention and fencing and a native plant aquaculture project which aims to remove nitrogen, phosphorus and carbon from the water column. This project is being done in partnership with mana whenua iwi groups and will include the incorporation of mātauranga Māori, or traditional knowledge, into future NRC monitoring. The public will have opportunity for involvement in riparian planting days and through their children at schools engaged with the Enviroschools and Te Aho Tu Roa programmes, which will track the progress of the project.

HELP NEEDED FROM DUCK HUNTERS

Dance to preserve history u by Ayla Miller

The Kauri Museum’s biannual fundraiser promises the ‘best lineup’ at the May Day dance they have ever had.

Kiwis keeping us busy April has been a very busy month with four injured kiwi, one wandering albatross, many little blue penguins and seven harrier hawks, along with a few other birds coming our way. The albatross has been released thanks to our friends at Dive Tutukaka, who often take birds to the Poor Knights for release in a safe area. All the kiwi have been released, including the female kiwi that had part of her toe removed by our vet Bruce after she got caught in a gin trap. The Department of Conservation has been tracking her and have let us know she has settled back into the wild. We have received ten seagulls this month and most have been injured by humans being cruel to them. The red billed gull is protected and you can be fined $100k for killing one. Lots of harrier hawks are being sent to us after being run over so please slow down. When panicked they will hold on to their prey (at this time of year food is hard to find) and that’s why so many are run over. Very soon we will start receiving kiwi eggs and you will be able to view them (and hopefully see a kiwi hatch!) in the Bayer Incubation Unit with our webcams. Just go to www.nbr.org.nz and click on web cams. The Recovery Centre is a registered charity and we always need donations and grants. We have a boat that is used for releasing and retrieving sea birds and we have released around 30 shearwaters and petrels over the past month because of the bad weather. Unfortunately my electronic safety beacon has reached the end of the battery life and it’s cheaper to buy a new one than to have new battery’s installed in the old one. If anyone can help out with a new one to keep me safe out there on the water, I’d be keen to hear from you! Finally, we would like to thank Stuart and Carly at Civiltrain for joining us as a long-term sponsor because we need support like this to make sure the Centre is around for many years. We also welcome the support from Northern Districts Security. We all work very hard providing a great service and this support shows us that what we are doing for wildlife is very worthwhile in the eyes of these people. Robert and Robyn Webb.

Old favourites, Shane and The Shazam Band, will perform and funds raised will go towards helping the museum care for and exhibit items in their collection. Kauri Museum CEO, Lisa Tolich, says there are thousands of objects stored in the most unlikely places — wherever there is a space in an already full museum. “Take some time out of your busy schedules, enjoy a night out with family and friends and contribute to a special cause. After 56 years of operation, The Kauri Museum is repurposing existing facilities and upgrading them to meet our growing storage needs. Not all of our collection can be on permanent display at any one time, and these items need to be stored carefully, to ensure that they are here for future generations to enjoy,” she says. Various local businesses have contributed to the spot prizes, and Lisa says many will recognise band member, Alistair Taylor of Paparoa Shop and Brew.

Community art project underway The artist behind the successful Stingray Project in Mangawhai last year has organised another community art initiative to celebrate native bush and the flora and fauna that comes with it. Magical Mangawhai Goes Bush is a free community art project led by Rosina Kamphuis and opened on Friday, April 19. “We hope that lots of people from every age group will come along and paint, then come back and explore the exhibition’, Rosina says. “This art project is for the Mangawhai community, families, artists, businesses, everybody.” The Mangawhai Artists

Gallery has been transformed into a community art painting centre for the duration of the workshops, and all ages can come along. No art experience or painting skill is required. ‘One moonlit night ...’ will use all of the painted material from the workshop to make an exhibition and installation evoking native bush at night. Mayor Jason Smith will open the exhibition on Saturday, May 5 at 3pm. ¢

Celebrating sporting success

KAIPARA LIFESTYLER  April 24 - 2018

It was a full house at the Kaiwaka Sports Complex last week as the community gathered to recognise sporting prowess at the annual Kaiwaka Sports Awards Dinner for 2018 hosted by John Markby of More FM. “Our sports awards evening is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the talented sportspeople in our district and to show our appreciation to those people who work behind the scenes to make sport happen,” said association manager, Cheryl Anderson.

A swimming success

More than 200 swimmers from Kaitaia to Kaiwaka participated in the Northland Primary Schools Swimming meet at the Kauri Coast Community Pool.

The internationally acclaimed Mwangaza Children’s Choir from Uganda will perform a free concert at the Dargaville Town Hall on May 3 during its New Zealand tour being sponsored by Tearfund.

p More than 200 swimmers gathered to compete at the Kauri Coast Community Pool for the Northland Primary Schools Swimming meet

The event was organised by the principal of Selwyn Park Primary School, Vern Stevens, with the help of the Dargaville Swimming Club. “There were 27 records were broken during the day, and there were some close races despite the chilly weather,” said Dargaville Swimming Club secretary, Samantha Simons. Pool manager, James Taoho, said it was a ‘beautiful sight’ to see everyone enjoying the facility.

“It’s great to see the amount of people who put in time and effort to come here. A lot of the swimmers are quite high-calibre, and the quality of this pool is very high. I would say this is one of the top three pools in New Zealand.” This is the third time the meet has been held, and swimmers participated and swam in teams under Whangarei, Far North, Kawakawa and Otamatea as well as Northern Wairoa umbrellas. ¢

p Smiling faces of choir members

The choir has travelled across the United States, Holland, UK, Germany, Singapore and Australia, and has released six albums. The 18 children between eight and 12-years-old will present a taste of African culture with “vibrant costumes, joyful music, energetic dancing, infectious smiles and inspirational stories” as a part of the experience. “The children of Uganda have been

greatly challenged by poverty, HIV/AIDs and many have been taken by the Lord’s Resistance Army, and forced to become child soldiers,” says Tearfund marketing manager, Brenda Won. “These kids are representing all the children of Uganda and showing that with the help of sponsorship, Uganda’s children can rise above these things and make the country a different place.” ¢

Scrap metal muster

Calling for entries

u by Jill Dickie

u by Ayla Miller

Maungaturoto Primary School is fundraising for a week-long biennial camp to be held in February next year by accepting donations of scrap metal from the community.

Entries for the Kaipara Art Awards are now open, and with limited space available, chair John Pickworth urges artists not to delay getting their entry forms in.

p John Pickworth Kaipara Art Awards chair speaks at the 2017 gala night p Fundraiser organiser, Kimberly Sinclair with son Tyler, amidst some of the collection

The collection fits in with the school’s environmental plan, as one of the four areas of learning is Zero Waste. By encouraging the community to recycle all of their scrap metal the school reinforces the message to students. “The Maungaturoto Primary School camps are incredible and involve all the students at all ages,” says organiser Kimberly Sinclair. “The teachers and principal are very passionate about these camps and put a lot of time and effort into all the planning to ensure everything runs smoothly at the time.”

Suitable metal items include electrical appliances, except for TVs, and a wide range of metal fittings from pipes to farm machinery, car batteries, even complete cars with motor and gearbox. No fencing wire, gas bottles, tyres or glass. Unwanted metal can be left with Alexanders Scrap Metal at 2 Blakey Street, Maungaturoto, where it can be recorded as part of the fundraiser, and bulk items may be collected by arrangement with Ben Sheppard 021 554 665. For further enquiries contact Kimberly on 021 302 600. ¢

“At this stage we are simply calling for entrants. Artists do not have to wait until they know exactly what their entry will be,” Mr Pickworth says. The awards are a direct collaboration between Mangawhai Artists Inc and the Dargaville Arts Association. The two organisations will take turns hosting the exhibition at the Muddy Waters Gallery in Dargaville and the Mangawhai Artists Inc Gallery in Mangawhai. “This year we are proud to host the gala awards evening and opening in Dargaville. The exhibition will stay there for a few weeks and then it will move to Mangawhai.”

There are four cash prizes — first, judges’ award, second and third. The awards are made possible because of the principal sponsor The Kaipara Lifestyler, and grant donations from Pub Charities New Zealand Ltd. Artworks can be entered under two categories — two-dimensional or three-dimensional. Entries must be in by close of business on Friday, June 8. The judging and the gala opening night will be held on Friday, July 6 at the Dargaville Town Hall and the Muddy Waters Gallery. Visit nsmm.co.nz for terms, conditions and entry forms. ¢

Fire sparks safety message

Remembering sporting days

u by Ayla Miller

u by Ayla Miller

The owners of the Maungaturoto house that burnt to the ground on April 15 are opening up their property to warn others about the dangers of not having smoke alarms.

The great sporting legends of the Dargaville Rugby and Sports Club will come together to celebrate the club’s 125th anniversary on April 27 and 28.

p Paddy Thornton, Maungaturoto Volunteer Fire Brigade Chief Fire Officer

Past president from 1993 until 2012 and life member, Darrel Bradley, says there have been many changes to the club over the years. “I think the biggest change was being part of the awesome team that helped set-up and start the Western Sharks and also being part of the inaugural team.” The we e ke n d ’s celebrations will kick p The 125th anniversary of the Dargaville Rugby and Sports Club is a chance to catch up with old friends and reminisce. off with a Golden Oldies Pictured: The 1948 Dargaville Rugby Seniors Challenge, a meeting of past rugby, netball and squash many games as he can to watch his players from 35 years and up, to play sons play. a game for old times’ sake followed “My fondest memories are my by a mix and mingle in the clubrooms. friendships forged on and off the field “Hopefully, the teams will have and watching both my sons play for the enough players so we can have rolling Western Sharks. subs, no one gets puffed, and most “I think the proudest memory is importantly there are no injuries. Maungaturoto Chief Fire Officer, Paddy Thornton, says it is a ‘miracle’ no one was killed. “We would like to see everyone in the community have working smoke alarms in their homes. We will also be using this open day to deliver fire safety messages and also as a bit of a recruitment push. “There were people staying in their house and people sleeping in the lounge. They only woke up because of the heat and smashing of the windows. They have blisters on their ears — that’s how close to death and dead bodies we were. We are taking this opportunity for

a massive push to make people aware that smoke alarms are important. If there were smoke alarms they would have been alerted 3–4 minutes earlier, and it would have been a smaller fire, and we could have saved the house.” The volunteer fire brigade alarm was raised at approximately 11.30pm on the Sunday night and trucks from Kaiwaka, Waipu and two from Maungaturoto attended the call-out. Investigations into what caused the fire are still underway. The open day will be held at 194 Hurndall Street on April 28, 10am– 2pm. ¢

DUCK SHOOTING Game bird season opens The first of the opening weekend shots will be fired on May 5, and should the weather conditions be favourable, Fish & Game are expecting above average bags to be harvested this hunting season. The wet and warm summer has seen higher concentrations of birds throughout the Northland region, and being prepared is the key. Hunters should ready themselves for all possible scenarios but expect two big differences — larger numbers of birds, and potentially more people looking to join in the action. With many folks moving north from the city to retire, a hunting trip is high on the agenda for those acclimatising or rediscovering the country life. Rangers will be out during the season undertaking compliance activities,

ensuring everyone has a safe and enjoyable time, so be sure to drop into your local hunting store to grab a licence. The Wildlife Act 1953 allows the occupier, his/her wife/husband and one son or daughter to hunt on their property without a hunting licence. Many landowners do not realise that the act only allows for these three people to hunt without a licence and all other family members are required to hold a permit. New Zealand Police will join the rangers for opening weekend, so

Kumara Korner Enjoy Kumara Available Now

WILD DUCK PIE WITH FIGS, MUSHROOMS AND RED WINE Method

Ingredients

Q: whats your colour A: ask john

4 tablespoons olive oil 2 medium onions, diced 2 cloves garlic, peeled and sliced 2 carrots, peeled and diced 3 ribs celery, diced 2 cups sliced brown mushrooms 300-400g wild duck breast meat, cut into 2cm pieces 250g dried figs, quartered 1 cup red wine 1/2-1 cup chicken stock (or water) 3 large orange kumara, peeled and diced 1/3 cup crème fraiche 2 teaspoons butter

1: Heat the oven to 160 degrees celsius. 2: Heat two tablespoons of the oil in a large, heavy, lidded pot (ideally one you can transfer to the oven, later). Add the onions, garlic, carrots, and celery to the pot with a good pinch of salt. Sauté for 10 minutes over medium heat, then add the mushrooms and cook for another five minutes. Tip the cooked vegetables into a bowl and set aside. 3: Return the pot to the heat and add the remaining oil. Add the duck breasts, letting them brown briefly on all sides. 4: Tip the vegetables back into the pot, along with the figs, kumara, wine, and stock. The liquid should barely cover the meat - add more or less, depending on the size of the pot. Season well and cover tightly, then transfer to the preheated oven and cook for two hours, or until the duck is tender. 5. Remove the pot from the oven, and raise the heat to 200 degrees. 6. While the duck is cooking, put the kumara in a pot and cover with water. Set over high heat and bring to the boil. Add a good pinch of salt and simmer until soft. Drain well, then mash to a soft puree with the crème fraiche. 7. When the duck is cooked, transfer it to a pie dish. Top with the whipped kumara, then dot with butter and season well. Bake for another 25 minutes, until the kumara is golden brown. Serve immediately

Beyond the predictable gifts u by Andy Bryenton

Mother’s Day is nearly here, and many of us will be wondering just what to buy for the special lady who knows all too much about our childhood indiscretions. Gone are the days when a box of chocolates or a lacy handkerchief would be seen as appropriate. In this century, mums are out there doing it for themselves, and many have outstripped dad when it comes to being handy in the house and garage. One fine example is in the garden. A popular pastime for mums, whether it’s cultivating a crop of healthy veg or simply brightening up the place, gardening is a lot of hard work without the right tools. You can forget the days when mum had to call on assistance to wield the weed trimmer, hedge clippers, or even the chainsaw in the outdoors. Lightweight

materials, better manufacturing processes, miniaturisation and modern battery technology have combined to create a range of outdoor power tools, which are light and strong. Take Stihl’s range for example — one battery can be shared by a variety of ‘skins’, a whole shed worth of tools, which can be lifted and manoeuvered by

Gift Ideas For Mum ARE RIGHT HERE!

Our bigger, brighter store has something for every mum — and the rest of the family too!

p Break free of conventions — handy mums want gifts, which reflect their can-do attitude

even the smallest among us. And they’re not lacking for power — either. The small chainsaw in the range, suitable for pruning, firewood cutting and light tasks is possibly even more hungry for wood chips than its petrol counterpart. If your mum likes to garden but has previously been wary (or weary) of hard to start, heavy, smelly and loud power equipment — battery is the way to go. It’s the same in the workshop for power tools of a more traditional nature — drills, saws, electric screwdrivers and

the like have all progressed in recent years to the point where handy mums have the full arsenal of power machinery at their disposal, without the extension cords, heavy weights or lack of precision. After all, we’re no longer surprised if mum owns a better motorcycle than dad, or if she’s the one who is behind that kitchen and bathroom restoration while he takes care of dinner. Why stick to ‘classic’ gifts from a time when mums were less adventurous? Get her something practical and powerful this year and celebrate gender equality! ¢

Good Life grows u by Ayla Miller

Your local caterer

As demand for their locally produced eco-friendly products increase, Helen Cairns and Andrew Wardle of Good Life, have shifted to a larger store opposite their old shop on Victoria Street, to accommodate their growing business. Helen started selling her handmade soaps under the brand Good Life Soaps at local markets about seven years ago. “The original idea was to have a studio set up, but we were so well supported by the local community the shop started to grow. I kept spotting things people wanted and things I wanted to stock.” Helen and Andrew moved from Manchester 12 years ago and say their aim has always been to support Northlanders. They currently stock Chapel Olive Oil, Merril Road Preserves, Grinning Gecko and Mahoe cheese as well as free-range small pork products. The new shop also has a new gardening section, and they will look into expanding their bulk food range. “We will be very responsive to what people want. We like New Zealand made and zero waste packaging. Packaging drives me off the edge. I don’t want to preach about it, but we can offer people the option to bring their own containers. We have containers, if people don’t already have them.” They also ensure that if any of their products, such as coffee, are imported, it is Fairtrade.

Birthday celebration

Spotlight on mental health

u by Jill Dickie

u by Ayla Miller

‘Black Friday’ became ‘Bright Friday’ on April 13 when Elinor Shoebridge celebrated her 90th birthday with a surprise party at Norfolk Court Rest Home.

Mental health educator and ambassador for The Key to Life Charitable Trust, Mike King, will talk at an upcoming community meeting organised by Te Ha Oranga in aid of suicide prevention.

p Elinor Shoebridge with family and friends

Several of her eight children, 24 grandchildren, and 27 greatgrandchildren travelled from Hamilton, Tauranga, Te Aroha, and even Australia, to take part in festivities, bringing gifts and cards. Staff at Norfolk Court arranged refreshments and a large cake, and a three-year-old great-granddaughter helped blow out the candles. “Bringing up a good family,” was the key to reaching 90 years

your fire place

according to Mrs Shoebridge, who was quite overwhelmed by the unexpected visitors. Mrs Shoebridge was born on April 12 1928, at Westport, in the South Island, and travelled to Dargaville in 1948. Along with her husband, she was farming at Arapohue, spent time as a nurse and worked with St John Ambulance, before retiring to Whangarei and later returning to Dargaville. ¢

“Our specific goal is to work alongside health professionals, service providers, and those within our communities to better understand mental illness through the promotion of positive attitudinal change,” Mr King said. “By reinforcing that mental illness should be talked about instead of swept under the rug we are allowing our youth, our people to recognise they are not alone when it comes to thoughts of self-doubt and self-criticism. By normalising self-doubt, fear of failure, and any other associated differences we are lessening the likelihood our kids will think of themselves as being inferior to their mates.” Te Ha Oranga social worker, Christiane Rudolph, said the hui aims to let people know there is support available and not necessarily in the p form of a councillor or clinician. “We are born and bred to whanaungatanga — build relationships. Suicide is a hidden subject, but now we are opening it up, so people have the tools and knowledge to deal with it. “This is about letting people know there is a point of support and people know they aren’t alone.” Te Ha Oranga

Mike King, mental health educator

support aid, Dobson Abraham, said this meeting will give people the knowledge to open up their hearts and minds. “Mike King uses humour to break down that barrier.” The hui will be held at the Dargaville Town Hall on April 27 from 10am–4pm. ¢

Focus on evolution u by Andy Bryenton

There’s a gradual process at work in nature, which makes tiny changes to fit species more closely to the niche they inhabit in the wild. Recently, we’ve found out that generations of deep-diving fishermen in South East Asia have actually developed a more efficient spleen and oxygen system, meaning they can hold their breath underwater for minutes longer than their land-dwelling neighbours. In the same way, constant feedback from farmers has shaped the evolution of the Can-Am Outlander ATV. Alright — this is nothing to do with Charles Darwin’s random mutations. The changes to the 2018 Outlander — a series, which encompasses everything from the inexpensive and hard-working little 450L through to the powerful 570 — are deliberate and precise. With a variety of combinations available, it all begins with two tough Rotax engines — a 38hp single-cylinder, liquid-cooled Rotax 450 four-stroke or a 48hp, eight-valve, liquid-cooled SOHC Rotax 570 V-Twin. These can be fitted to no less than 22 combinations of frame and seating arrangement, including stretched two-person and six wheeled models. On Kiwi farms the classic ATV still reigns, and it’s the very popular 450 variant of the Outlander, which hits that sweet spot between fuel economy and power. For 2018 this popular model has had improvements made underneath, tuning the torsional trailing arm rear suspension for an even smoother ride. It’s still the only machine in its class, which boasts this clever setup, allowing the wheels to ‘crawl’ over terrain in a true vertical motion. The steering feedback is crisper and more intuitive than ever, and a hefty 23cm of suspension travel makes it easy to tackle harsh terrain when coupled with appropriately gnarly tyres. One thing which needed no upgrade is the Can-Am progressive automatic front differential locking system, which they call Visco-Lok.

Without buttons or levers, this system makes sure the wheel with grip, is the wheel getting the most power from that Rotax mill in sticky situations. An easy to maintain, hard-wearing little monster of a machine at a tidy price, the Outlander 450 — and its bigger cousins — are a definite asset in the shed as autumn turns to winter. Take a look at the new range soon at your local dealership. ¢
