“It would be a million dollar project if it was being paid for in hard cash, but its completion will be the sum of a huge amount of time and effort on a voluntary basis,” said the chairman of the 150th Years Up Committee, Albie Paton. “Basically we and the Residents Association are looking at improvements and beautification from Bickerstaffe Road, then throughout the town. A key component of the huge project will be the reconstruction of the old wharf on the Wairau Creek at Bickerstaffe Road where the original settlers landed. Today, just old pilings remain at what later became a town dump site.” There has been a joint meeting with the Northland Regional and Kaipara District Councils with a positive response to the plan and resource consents are being applied for.  Checking the future for Maungaturoto are (l/r) locals Naira Vaney, Jan McLeod and Marge and Ablie Paton “We plan to clean up and beautify the old dump site as a small park which will join on a walkway rocks, stones, plants, trees, cement.” Hopefully we can sell through the Maungaturoto Country Club. some amazing 80s-era costumes and a list of stand-out characters (including a megalomaniac fashion designer, a very worried band manager, and a dad so uncool he’s almost hypnotic). While all cannot be revealed regarding the plot for reasons of artistic impact, those who come to see Material Girls should be prepared for an interesting twist after the intermission, as well as cameo appearances by local entertainers. And unlike some 80s pop stars, the cast of Material Girls really sing — this is no lip-synch fakery! Fans of modern musicals which have featured the music of the Four Seasons, Queen, Abba and the like will simply adore the light-hearted story and nostalgic score of Deborah Steele’s debut play. Fast broadband on its way Schools, hospitals, and libraries in Kaipara and throughout Northland will be connected to faster broadband in the final phase of the government’s $300 million Rural Broadband Initiative, released last week. Across the country, 193 provincial schools, 183 rural public libraries, 37 rural hospitals and 10 Health Centres will be receiving ultrafast broadband fibre connections of up to 100 megabits per second. In Kaipara, schools to be connected include St Joseph’s, Dargaville High, Dargaville Intermediate, Dargaville Primary, Mangawhai Beach, and Maungaturoto as well as Dargaville

Hospital. Libraries include Mangawhai, Dargaville, Ruawai, Maungaturoto and Paparoa. “Many of the schools have relied on satellite broadband and have managed with small data caps and low speeds,” says Northland MP Mike Sabin. “The announcement ensures that rural communities will be well connected with the latest technology. This will break down the barriers of distance that rural communities face. Students will be able to video conference with specialist teachers, doctors and nurses will be connected to training sessions in big cities, and communities will have access to information and job-seeking tools through broadband in public libraries.”

Northland Hunt 60th Jubilee Crank-up Day fun for all

Northland Hunt has last week marked its 60th Jubilee. With most horse sports finished until spring the hunting season is just beginning with horses and riders charging around the countryside after the hounds until the season finishes in late July Riders from all over the country have taken part in a full week of hunting, from locations in the Bay of Islands, Whangarei and two hunts in the Dargaville area, finishing off the week with a social evening and joined by 80 visitors. Northland Hunt was also acknowledged at the recent Dargaville races after kindly having one of the races named after their 60th Jubilee. “We have 60 senior members with the youngest this year being 10 years old and the oldest 88 years old, who we believe may be the oldest actively hunting member in New Zealand,” said Master of the hunt, Andrew Duff. “It is a great family orientated sport that is non-competitive; we have a friendly group of members that help each other out while having a good camaraderie. “Each hunt gives you the opportunity to ride across farm land that is not often seen by the public and with Northland Hunt averaging 40 hunts a season from Kerikeri Peninsula to Pouto,” said Andrew.

“The weather was mostly good, it all went well and we are really pleased with our latest Crank–up Day,” says Vintage Machinery Club treasurer, Mrs. Ann Lupton. “Numbers were up on last year. Quite a few young ones came for a look and they seemed really interested in the butter making and the bread making. Butter maker Pamela Parkinson let some of them have a try at turning the churn handle. The miniature horses with their dressage and little carts were excellent. They carried out a simulated rescue that was a lot of fun”

Among other interesting activities was a ‘rag rug’ making display and Ann noticed how that brought back memories for many older people. There was a display by the Dargaville Camera Club, nineteen classic cars were on show for the men to drool over and ‘Doug the Digger’ strutted his stuff. “A shearing plant powered by a bicycle caused a lot of action. A local lad managed to pedal long enough for the shearer to shear a sheep. Others tried but couldn’t pedal long enough. And over at the camp oven Keith

Hansen did his cooking with a good variety of food. Yes, it was a lot of work for us but the day was a lot of fun and gave us all a lot of pleasure” says Ann.

This is a series of regular articles keeping you informed of happenings on our harbour today, and from bygone days — truly the ‘Jewel of the Kaipara’.

Exploring a hidden harbour  by Paul Campbell

Traversing the Kaipara with its massive coastline is a neverending adventure, and a recent boat trip into the hidden recesses of the drowned river valleys that feed into the harbour proper were a revelation I was invited aboard by the redoubtable Albie Paton of Mangaturoto, to visit the upper reaches of the Otamatea, including the Kaiwaka and Wairau streams. We launched at Point Curtis, after a drive through private farmland, and that in itself was something of a revelation. We could have simply been on a lake, with the high tide lapping at the roots of kauri tree and mangrove alike. The

railway bridge spanning the upper reaches of the Otamatea gave the lie to the fact that should we wish, we could easily access the harbour proper and then the open Tasman. But for the time being, were were cruising a private waterway. We had set out to examine an old wharf, or the remaining few piles of that structure, where the early

Maungaturoto setlers found solid ground after harrowing journeys of two weeks or more from Auckland. Settlement records echo the feelings of exploration I was experiencing. ‘Embarked upon the whaleboat, the party commenced a veritable voyage of discovery,’ wrote the authors of The Albertlanders book. ‘Neither master or man seemed to have any idea of the location of the place (Mangaturoto), beyond that it  A lost world: Up the Wairau Stream to Mangaturoto was near the head of the Wairau Stream. metres of SH 12 as it sweeps past The course zig-zagged; the boatmen the Fonterra plant on the outskirts of being new to the river, after poking about Mangaturoto. Coastguard ‘MayDay’ appeal

Community hub is open for all

Volunteers from the North Kaipara Coastguard will be out and about in Dargaville and other Kaipara towns in the first two weeks in May, supporting the organisation’s national MayDay fundraising appeal

There are few institutions so recognisable as part of a Kiwi town as the local RSA

The appeal runs from May 1 to Sunday, May 13, and donations will help support Coastguard’s critical volunteer programme ‘Train one – save many’. Coastguard Northern Region’s volunteers each require training both in the water and the air, to ensure they can respond with speed and accuracy. There are currently 1,035 volunteers in Northland. In the past year they have invested 100,262 hours, responded to 1,616 calls for assistance and have rescued 3,710 people. “We hope that with New Zealand’s support, this year’s MayDay appeal will help raise the necessary funds to give them the essential training and support they need to do their job safely while out on the water,” said Northern Region CEO, David Tommas. Look out for MayDay collectors on the street between May 1 – 13, or make a donation by: •Going online at www.coastguard.co.nz •Make an automatic $25 donation by calling 0900 SOS SOS (0900 767 767) •Call in to your local ASB to make a donation •Direct into the Coastguard ASB Account 12-3209-0434030-01 (Please reference with MayDay and your surname)

From the cape to the bluff RSA clubrooms form a hub for their communities — in fact, the thought of a ‘proper’ New Zealand town without its RSA is almost unthinkable. While the RSA was first formed for returned servicemen and women, the role of the organisation has grown from that of a memorial and a place of remembrance into one of real community involvement, with the doors of your local RSA open to all. There are very few Kiwis who haven’t had a relative or two who was a member, and even fewer who have never visited the RSA clubrooms in their locality. And while the spirit of remembrance and camaraderie which built the association is still strong, there are increasing numbers of members both here and in Australia who are neither veterans or even ex-military — they have respect for the sacrifices of those who have gone before,

but they see the RSA as a social and community club, a place which is part of Kiwi history and has a definite place in modern New Zealand. The RSA is operated by and for its members, not for profit, so you can always be assured of a good time, whether you’re into music and dancing, sports and competition or just a place to meet like-minded people. RSA members have visiting rights at numerous other clubs all over NZ and Australia too. To help introduce the RSA to new members the Dargaville RSA is holding two open days, on the 4th and 19th of May. Friday the 4th will be a dance evening, with music provided by popular south island duo ‘Breakthru’. On Saturday the 19th the Kamo Club will be visiting for a day of friendly competition as the two clubs face off across the snooker and pool tables. Come and pay your local RSA a visit and see what has made it the heart of Dargaville for so many years. We’re sure you’ll have a great time!

Ratepayers plan rates response Kaipara Citizens and Ratepayers Association will be calling a public meeting as soon as the Kaipara District Council releases its Long Term District Plan — currently being reviewed by Audit New Zealand — for local consultation

Ron Manderson — Kaipara Citizens and Ratepayers Association Chairperson

“At its recent meeting, members were most concerned that rate increases required by Kaipara District Council will be beyond the capacity of many ratepayers to meet,” said the association chair, Ron Manderson. “Since there is only KCRA that represents all citizens and ratepayers of Kaipara, we will take steps to gather further support and address the rates issue in particular. He said the planned public meeting “is expected to be well attended and vocal as council liabilities have increased from $10 million to $91 million in 10 years according to published figures, and rates from $9 million to $18 million a year in the same period, and further massive increases are required. “While several different rate increase indications have come from the mayor, and staff, the most credible appears a recent one at a council meeting indicating an average 31%

further increase with large sectors facing up to 50%, with many more targeted rates. This was before the recent complaint to the police that council has illegally collected, and may need to repay $9.5 million of targeted rates of the disastrous Mangawhai Wastewater Scheme. The position therefore is still uncertain.” Mr Manderson added that ratepayers pay around $20 million a year to KDC, which with subsidies provides the $40 million a year that council expends. “Disturbingly very little monitoring of council takes place and ratepayers and residents simply must invest more time and money if they want improvement and control of rate increases. Outside entities appear to have captured influence of much of councils’ rampant expenditures.” It is important for all ratepayers to join up and support KCRA. kcra.org.nz or email kcrassn@gmail.com, or phone 09 431 9101.

Family fun under the big top

KAIPARA LIFESTYLER APRIL 25 - 2012

It’s our first birthday!

 by Andy Bryenton

The circus is coming to town! There are few words more exciting to kids and adults alike — bringing back memories of popcorn and the smell of sawdust, bright lights and amazing thrills The circus of yesteryear has changed with modern times (for example, we’ve decided that tigers and elephants belong in the wild, not in cages), but the traditional circus arts which have come out of centuries of travelling carnivals have come into their own in the 21st century. Zirka Circus is no exception — their thrilling two-hour show is a masterpiece of choreography, daredevil skill and balletic grace all set to lights and music. An international cast of performers have been brought together under the big top for your entertainment, and the show they’ve designed is called – rightly enough – ‘Out of This World’! Just a few highlights have been leaked to the press ahead of their three-day season in Dargaville, but what we can reveal provides a taste of worldclass circus entertainment that’s simply astounding. Costumed acrobats will fly on wires, balance in intricate arrangements, and hang high above the ring, relying on skill alone. You’ll be in stitches at the antics of Zirka Circus’ kung fu clowns, combining ancient martial arts with slapstick comedy. And most thrilling of all, Zirka Circus boasts the world’s largest Globe of Death — the single most hair-raising daredevil stunt ever seen in New Zealand. Locked in a metal sphere high in the air, artist Bruce Zhang will ride a full-sized motorcycle sideways and even upside down, defying gravity and

death. Those who have seen motorcycle stuntmen like the Crusty Demons can’t miss this! Zirka Circus promises family fun for all ages, in a show that is by turns exciting, poetic, graceful, hilarious and engaging. Mixing the artistry of troupes like the world famous Cirque Du Soleil with the traditional carnival atmosphere of the big top. Don’t miss their shows in Dargaville — it’s a chance to get the whole family together for a night they’re sure to remember.

“Zirka Circus boasts the world’s largest Globe of Death – the single most hair-raising daredevil stunt ever seen in New Zealand”

It’s a red-letter day for the folks at Dargaville’s Westpac Bank — a whole year since the town welcomed their brand new branch. Manager Nicola Smith says that she and her team have been welcomed into community in a big way, by both residents and the business community. The fact that the Westpac team are all long-term Dargaville locals fits in well with the company philosophy of community involvement — not just through generous sponsorships and in helping to grow local business, but in many other ways as well. A big initiative supported by Westpac is helping young children with ‘financial literacy’ — making sure they understand how money works and how it can work for them through savings. With twelve successful months behind them, Nicola and Westpac have an exciting year ahead planned — one which combines even more community involvement with helping businesses and individuals with their own big plans. These could be anything from starting a business to buying a first home or any kind of financial goals — Westpac can help chart a course to achieve them. Looking back on a busy year Nicola and all her team would like to thank the people of Dargaville for their support. “We want to thank our local customers who not only helped open the doors but continued to support us throughout the past year,” she says. “We’re proud to be part of this community and we plan to play a major part for many more years to come!”

When the colder weather comes demand will be sure to increase, and discounts may well disappear. Secondly, it pays to consider the time it takes to properly select and install the right fireplace for your home. GET IT SORTED Before Winter Part of the Northland community Eco Insulation Northland has been a part of the Northland community for 10 years, locally owned and operated by the husband and wife team of Ken and Trish Love. Ken comes from a building background and his vast knowledge from this industry allows him to assist you in your specific insulation needs for your home. Joining the team recently is our home assessor Anthony Wiki, who is available for a free no- obligation quote in your home. He can provide you with information on how to obtain an Energywise subsidy and the correct types of insulation needed for your home. Eco can offer you insulation options to suit your home and your budget. For your ceiling we can provide formaldehyde free fibreglass, wool and polyester insulation. For underfloor insulation we can provide polyester — a fantastic product which is resistant to moisture and doesn’t leave a mess under your home. Don’t be fooled into thinking that you insulated your home 10 years ago and it doesn’t need anymore. The insulation industry has learnt so much in the last decade and now takes into account of ‘R’ ratings to keep heat in your home. If your ceiling insulation is below your ceiling joists then your home will need a ‘top up’ before winter, because heating costs more if you don’t have the correct insulation in your home

is not just a case of picking a stylish fireplace and taking it home. Building law requires council consent to be given before a fireplace is installed, and it’s vitally important to fit the right size and shape to evenly heat your home. All in all, it can take about one to two months from start to finish (paper work included), and that’s not during the busy period in winter when fireplace installers have long waiting lists. The same holds true for cleaning and upgrading existing fires, and of course laying in a supply of good dry wood for the winter. Thinking ahead can save you big money and ensure that your home is nice and warm while others are still paying for expensive bar heaters or simply resorting to layers of blankets! 

When it comes to getting things sorted for winter, the property management team at your local Ray White Real Estate branch know who to call. Greenways Trust, Comber and Seymour, Plumbing and Heating and Laser Electrical all come with an enthusiastic endorsement from Jean and the Ray White team – they are the professionals which Ray White uses to keep their managed properties tidy and functional. Before you turn on your heating this winter, have you considered the basics of warming your home? Insulation in your ceiling and walls creates the fundamental basics for warming your home. Many homes built in NZ before 1991 have no insulation in the walls. While roof and under floor insulation is widely used, unless your ceilings and walls are properly insulated up to 70% of the heat in your home is being lost. A common misunderstanding of how insulation works is the belief that if you just insulate the ceiling of an un-insulated

house, you will save 35-40% of your heat. This is simply not possible, as heat rises and if it can’t escape through the ceiling (because it is insulated), then it simply travels across the ceiling to the walls to seek an alternative escape route and finding no insulation barrier it exits through the walls. This means a drop in temperature creating condensation and cold draughts that cause mildew and damp on the walls and making it difficult to keep the whole house warm.

There is a cost effective and very efficient way to reduce this problem. Airfoam Wall Insulation has been insulating walls of existing homes for more than thirty years and over 15,000 homeowners now enjoy the basic requirement of an insulated home. They completed the ‘thermal blanket’ by insulating the existing walls. Insulating the walls will help prevent heat loss, reduce dampness and mould plus provide sound proofing, and as well as keeping your house warm during the

winter it regulates the temperature during the summer. The Airfoam Wall Insulation installers have been thoroughly trained and nationally certified to provide you with a cost effective way to install insulation into your walls without having to remove the claddings and minimal disruption to the family. You start saving on heating as soon as you have Airfoam installed; even if it is the number of times you have to fill the wood-box!

Would you like to wake up to a warm house this winter? If your house was built before 1991, it probably is one of the reported 960,000 homes in New Zealand that does not have wall insulation. 7 REASONS why now is a great time to insulate 30 • Within a matter of days you can transform your house into a cozy home. • Become more efficient with your heating and cooling costs. • Create a healthier environment for your family. • Significantly reduce condensation and reduce mould and dampness.

Proudly insulating the walls of New Zealand homes for over 25 years.

• Stop cold draughts in your home. • No need to remove claddings or linings saving time and money.

Bill Guest, Farmers of New Zealand

New Zealand is a country of immigrants The sale of the Crafar Farms to Chinese has raised a large debate in regards to foreign ownership, whether it is a threat to New Zealand land sovereignty and has also raised the old tales of beware of the threat of the yellow peril of Asian interests Farmers of New Zealand’s land policy is that land is the basis of New Zealand’s wealth, the source of most of the country’s export earnings and will continue to be the principle earner of foreign exchange for many years. This precious resource must be carefully husbanded to maintain its productive capacity. Changing world market and economic conditions require a flexible approach to planning and land management. Foreign ownership/investment can be a means of providing investment capital, access to markets and technology transfer. Foreign ownership of New Zealand land is only acceptable if a residential qualification is met or the Minister of Lands determines that the purchase would provide substantial benefit to the nation. Such decisions must be made public at all times. New Zealand is a country of immigrants. Many nationalities English,

American, Dalmations, Poles, Dutch are among those who have immigrated to New Zealand and successfully farm here. The Chinese first settled in New Zealand in the 1800s. There were Chinese gold miners and many worked in the gold mines in the South Island. There were 600 Chinese living at Chinaman Flat outside the town boundary of Lawrence in 1867. Sam Chew Lain, a Chinese, became a member of the local Masonic Lodge. The Chinese followed the Europeans to the coast, raking over claims the Europeans had worked first. One of Taranaki’s most visionary characters was a small Chinese man called Chew Chong. He was a key figure in developing the region’s dairy industry and the making and refrigeration of butter. A highly successful businessman in Taranaki, he owned general stores, butcher shops, and was a shareholder and director of Taranaki Producers Company Limited Coolstores and founded one of

the early Taranaki dairy companies. He was also responsible for producing one of New Zealand’s most recognisable food items, the pound of butter The Chinese today are numerous throughout New Zealand, owning businesses, farms, market gardens, and have blended successfully into the New Zealand community. The Crafar Farm deal is not about Chinese ownership. It is all about how Mr Crafar managed to borrow so much money and purchase so many farms, backed by the banks. There used to be land aggregation restrictions in New Zealand by way of the Land Aggregation Act which restricted the amount of land that an individual could purchase. It applied to New Zealanders as well as immigrants. A purchaser had to justify that they could manage and afford to run more than one property. Since these restrictions have been removed, we have seen numerous individuals backed by banks, the majority

of which are overseas, to provide up to 100% loans for farmers to purchase additional properties. A substantial number of these today are facing financial ruin through no equity and overwhelming debt. Farmers in New Zealand owe $46 billion in debt nationally. It is not the threat of the Chinese or overseas ownership that we should be concerned about, but the issue of whether it is in the interests of New Zealand for banks to recklessly lend money to one individual, with the end result that the only way the banks can bail their way out is to look to overseas purchasers that can have the ability to mitigate the banks’ losses.

Hair artistry — minus the harsh chemicals

Hot looks for the cold weather Building a winter wardrobe was once a compromise between practicality and design — a balance between wrapping up warm and looking fabulous. Bianca from Buy the Way (Kaiwaka’s exclusive little boutique of all things fashionable) has banished this misconception once and for all with her 2012 selections, encompassing exquisite new styles from Italy, Paris and New Zealand along with unique accessories and accoutrements to add personality to any ensemble. This season’s hot look combines the timeless elegance of black with textures and patterns to form the base of interchangeable outfits, livened up with splashes of bold colour. As usual the advantage of Buy the Way is not just in the carefully hand-picked items from top fashion houses — it’s the way that Bianca assists her customers with establishing their own personal style. It’s a hands-on approach which has seen the Kaiwaka boutique grow in popularity to become a fashion icon of the mid north. Bianca’s years of experience in matching couture and colour to an individual’s own style and personality have made her the local authority on what’s hot — not just in terms of labels and designers, but in tailoring a unique look that’s elegant no matter what the occasion.

 Accessorise with bold colours to lift this winter’s classic black palette

If you’re looking to revitalise your winter wardrobe (and brave the winter elements looking your absolute best), then a visit to Buy the Way is the perfect place to start. You can be assured of the kind of expert advice that ensures the perfect look for you — not just what’s hot on the catwalks of Europe, but what works best for your lifestyle and your figure. As always, the change of seasons is the perfect time to re-appraise your wardrobe — out with the old and in with the new! It’s also a brilliant way to feel good during the colder months — nothing warms the heart and soul like the knowledge that you’re looking great!

The Salon is (unsurprisingly) the name of the new salon in Kaiwaka — what does come as a surprise is the unique philosophy of Sean Burnett and Candice Seymour, the stylist artisans who run this fresh new business. And we do mean fresh — The Salon comes with capitals intended, as the very idea behind this modern white black and chrome space is a novel one. Sean plans to display local artwork depicting the many aspects of nature as seen around the Kaipara, turning the salon (a place for hair artistry) by day into a Salon by night (a group of aesthetes gathered to appreciate art and culture). In the short term, though, Sean’s skills without pigments or canvas have been enough to draw in a select clientele. Having honed his skills in Australia the talented hair stylist appreciates the pace of life in Kaiwaka and the Kaipara, a laidback attitude which has its own unique style. Part of that local flavour is the trend toward environmental awareness, which Sean has embraced wholeheartedly.

W. L. (Bill) Hughes MBE  by Brian Eastwood

If it was possible to run a score card on former Dargaville mayors to mark their efforts for the town and district, it might come up with a surprise. A twice elected but little noted W. L. (Bill) Hughes, could well top the chart. Only one other man, F. A. Jones, served a longer term, although the late Peter Brown went on to be first Mayor of Kaipara District Bill Hughes, as he was always known, came to Dargaville with wife Kathleen (Cassie) in 1929. Going into the lawyer’s office of Hayes, Darling and Mitchell as a clerk doing mainly conveyance and estate work, he stayed in the job for the next fifty years. Darling lost his life in World War One and Gilbert Hayes died a few months after Hughes arrived. The firm carried on and became Hayes Mitchell and Goulding, later adding partner Peter Pegg. In the 1980s decade it became Baanders Cannon and today it is known as Pegg Ayton Gordon. Bill and Cassie Hughes lived in Plunket Street before shifting to Islington Street where they spent the rest of their lives.

It wasn’t long before Hughes became involved in a huge amount of community work. He was a Justice of the Peace and served as District Coroner for many years. His efforts for Dargaville’s St John secured them a standby ambulance, one of only six Mercury cars imported into the country. He became president of the Northern Wairoa Brigade in 1952. He was president of Northland District Council, first chairman and a director of Dargaville Milk Treatment Corporation, the 1956 president of Rotary and was elected a Paul Harris Fellow, Rotary’s highest honour. When he had spare time he was a keen bowler and typically became the president of the Northland Centre. First elected to Dargaville Borough Council in 1941 he stood and was elected mayor three years later when Raymond Gibson retired. Hughes served two three-year terms until 1950 when another law clerk, Sam Astley, took over as mayor. Astley retired two years later and Bill Hughes stepped into the job again for a four-year third term. Some of his public service took him through the last part of World War

Two. And not surprisingly he served as chairman of the North Auckland Patriotic Committee. In their obituary, when Hughes died at Dargaville Hospital in October 1983 at age 85, the North Auckland Times wrote. ‘Within this district during the war, he took it upon himself to be with families when sad news was received from overseas battlefronts. Bill Hughes was a man who placed service above self.’ It would be hard to argue that he didn’t deserve his medal as a Member of the British Empire.

A cancer fundraiser for Project Promise, with something of a difference, is coming to town. On Friday, April 27, Api Theodore will arrive on foot in Dargaville as part of her fundraising ‘hikoi’ in support of a cancer treatment centre at Whangarei Hospital. “Api is a 65-year-old Maori wahine survivor of cancer who is passionate about her vision, dreams and aspirations in raising awareness and a consciousness about cancer by running around Northland,” says a project spokesman. Api will be arriving on Friday at 1pm at Selwyn Park. The public are invited to welcome her, and to also follow the rest of her journey on www.facebook. com/ProjectPromiseNorthland. It was announced last week that the fundraising efforts for Project Promise has officially reached the $1 million mark. Donations for Project Promise can be posted to: Project Promise PO Box 1844, Whangarei, 0140 or visit www.northlandcommunityfoundation.org.nz
