Gumboots to ballet shoes  by Sheri O’Neill

Against stiff competition, 17-year-old Charlotte Gleeson from Ruawai has been accepted for the New Zealand School of Dance, renowned for grooming talented dancers for the New Zealand Royal Ballet Company and international career prospects. This Easter, on her first trip home from studies in Wellington, Charlotte was more than happy to be swapping ballet shoes for gumboots on the Ruawai family farm. During the audition process Charlotte took part in both a classical and a contemporar y technique class and then performed a solo in front of the 12 person board. Of around 70 in her audition intake, she was one of only seven New Zealanders accepted for the entry class of 18 students majoring in classical ballet. “It wasn’t a great start — my plane from Whangarei was cancelled because of weather and I had to get a taxi to Auckland, grabbing the last seat on a plane to Wellington and arriving only just in time. So I wasn’t as confident as I might have been — but I held a picture in my mind that I might get in,” she said last week from Wellington, now several gruelling weeks into her first year. “It’s been unbelievable, but I’m still a farm girl at heart and I’m so looking forward to the Easter break.” With Charlotte’s typical day at the

school starting at 8.30am and not finishing until 6pm, and at least 25 hours of her week spent actively dancing, that’s not surprising. “They started us off with a week of warm-up classes, and it’s good they did. That first week every muscle was so sore. But now I’m into the routine it’s okay, although I spent three days recently recovering from a lumbar strain. They teach you how to avoid and manage injuries, but they’re part of being a dancer.” In addition to dance classes, Charlotte also studies anatomy, nutrition, music, dance history and Maori studies. Around 80% of all students at the school go on to full time employment in a ballet company, either here or overseas, and Charlotte says although she gets nervous, performance is the best part of being a dancer and definitely her goal. First studying ballet at the King School of Dance in Te Kopuru, for the last few years Charlotte was a student of the Northern Dance Academy in Kerikeri. “I’ve tried heaps of other

things — netball, violin, horse-riding and touch rugby, but I’ve always come back to ballet. “I love New Zealand and it would be my first choice

to dance here, ultimately in the New Zealand Royal Ballet Company.” But right now, Charlotte says, “I can’t wait to get home and jump on a horse.”

 by Sheri O’Neill

 by Sheri O’Neill

If you’ve ever wondered what happens to the yellow plastic bags of recyclable items you put out on the kerb — next week you get your chance to find out when Kaipara Refuse put their business on public view.

On Tuesday, April 9, between 10.30am and midday, you can pop in to their Ruawai transfer station in Porritt Street and watch as bottles and bags, cans, paper and cardboard are delivered, sorted and baled by Kaurilands’ expert team of recyclers. Ten Kaurilands’ clients work at the station for two-and-a-half days a week, sorting Kaipara’s reusables. As part of the Kaurilands Trust operation, the mission statement for Kaipara Refuse is to provide employment opportunities for the disabled. “That’s our bottom line,” says manager, Rob Battcher. “There is a commercial return for recyclable items, but there’s not a fortune to be made in it, especially right now with the high New Zealand dollar and low commodity values generally.” Glass, newspaper and cardboard are

3

recycled in New Zealand — the glass melted down, the cardboard and paper re-pulped and made into packaging. Plastic is sent to China, where some is reconstituted into items such as polar fleece and insulation, and in theory at least, resold to New Zealanders. The tins and cans go to a scrap metal dealer. Recycling is not paid for by Kaipara rates. The levy on each tonne of rubbish delivered to the Puwera Landfill is partially returned as funding for waste minimisation programmes. “Without the income from the yellow bags we would not pay our way,” says Rob. However, he says people are welcome to sort and deliver their own recyclables to either the Ruawai or Dargaville transfer stations. For information: Phone 09 439 2146 ■

Drought effects on rise  by Paul Campbell

Citing the poor quality of the current premises, including some building regulation non-compliance issues, and the breakdown of lease negotiations with the new owner, the Kaipara District Council is to move its Kaiwaka office to The Hub in Mangawhai. KDC operations manager, John Burt, said that the search for new premises had been limited to Maungaturoto and eastern locations. “The major workload at the Kaiwaka office is building with resource consent applications from the area, particularly from Mangawhai.” He said The Hub offices were the most suitable of those available, and after one-off relocation expenses the on-going cost of the new site would be less than remaining at the Kaiwaka premises. With the shift of the council office the Visitor Information Centre currently housed in the building will close. Mr Burt says that discussions have begun with the tourism sector on

how future promotion of the district and the Twin Coast Discovery Highway can best be driven in the future and supported by the funding made available by the closure. Bruce Rogan of the Mangawhai Ratepayers and Residents Association says the association feels neutral about the move but suspects council may see it as a sweetener for the Mangawhai community. “The right move is to move the whole operation of the council to a central location. We have discussed this repeatedly with (KDC’s CEO) Mr Ruru, and the time is long overdue. “ The Mangawhai move date has not yet been finalised, but Mr Burt expects it to take place around May.

Reform meet for Mangawhai Mangawhai residents have been added to a series of Northland Regional Council public meetings on possible local government reform in Northland. The council has been attempting to gather as much public feedback as possible ahead of a 15 April deadline imposed by the Local Government Commission which is processing a bid by the Far North District Council to become a unitary authority in its area. It has asked other councils in the region, including the regional council, to put forward alternatives by Monday April 15. Council chairman, Craig Brown, says the commission has refused

requests to extend the deadline, so the council has been holding a series “of urgent eleventh-hour meetings” to seek the public’s views on what form they think local government should take in the region. The Mangawhai meeting will be held from 6pm — 8pm on April 4, at the Mangawhai Library Hall. “If the commission decides it does want to change the current model of local government in Northland, it will put forward a proposal and invite public submissions,” said Mr Brown Information, including a background paper, is available at: www.nrc.govt. nz/LGreform ■

Kaipara farmers are now feeling the more serious effects of the prolonged drought, with fears autumn calving for dairy herds will add to the stress. In urban areas, the water shortage and restrictions are also biting after two-and-a-half months of almost record low rainfall have left water reserves in what the Kaipara District Council says is a critical state. There is a complete ban on hoses and sprinklers, and some businesses are feeling the water shortage pinch with property maintenance on hold. “On the farm front, recent good news of the higher Fonterra payout is tempered by the fact it will all go to pay for emergency feeding programmes,”

IFT BUY, SELL, SH

said Farmers of New Zealand operations director, Bill Guest. “And if there is no rain relief, we could have a serious animal welfare problem emerging.” He said increasing applications were being made for relief payments for farm workers laid off as dairy herds are dried off. While Dargaville’s water consumption has reduced by an impressive 20 percent, the town’s water problems have no end in sight either. continued on page 5…

Drought effects on rise KDC operations manager, John Burt, says the Waiatua Dam which boosts flow in the Kaihu River to provide for Dargaville’s summer needs is down to one third of its capacity and near the minimum operational level. Light showers that have been patchy across the district have made very little difference. He hopes existing restrictions will hold the situation until the drought breaks but further restrictions may come if the rain does not. The Northland Regional Council says the whole region still needs more than 100mm of rain over several days to make any appreciable difference to soil moisture levels and river flows. Working towards ending bullying  by Rose Rees-Owen

Two Kaipara organisations have secured a one-year contract from the Ministry of Social Development to launch an anti-bullying campaign.

 Kumarani manager Jenny Huriwai and instructor Adrian Humm demonstrating a trust exercise

Kaipara Abuse and Prevention services will undergo a research project and Circus Kumarani has developed a programme that will be implemented in schools as well as the community targeting under 18-year-olds. “Bullying is often assumed to be linked to behaviour in schools, but it can take place in a variety of environments including community spaces and at home or at work so we want to reach as many of the community as possible,” says Kumarani manager, Jenny Huriwai. “It’s called BRAVE which stands for Be Respectful and Value Everyone, and because many circus disciplines require collaboration and team work, it is an environment where bullying is virtually non-existent.” Circus instructor, Adrian Humm, will be leading the in-school component of the programme and says that BRAVE can be implemented in early child centres right up to year 13 adapting

it depending on the audience. “There will be a short performance, a question and answers session and circus workshops which will celebrate working together.” “We are not trying to label anyone as a bully or a victim — it’s more of a holistic approach, where we value every child equally.” A radio campaign with Big River FM is another integral part of the BRAVE programme. “It’s open to every school in the Kaipara and is available from the start of term two. We can be very flexible in the delivery, it could be for the whole school or just a particular year group — it’s up to the schools.” Organisations who have secured contracts will meet at a hui in Whangarei at the end of April to encourage collaboration and Jenny says she will look forward to working with other organisations to ensure the best outcomes for the initiative.

Tramping Mangawhai style  Sheri O’Neill

Forget the idea of burly characters up at the break of dawn, lugging 40lb packs and pounding down bush tracks in hobnailed boots — Mangawhai Trampers maintain a civilised approach to their outings. “We’re a group, not a club,” says Dawn Browne. “We start at 10 am and walk at a leisurely pace for an average of four hours, including stops for morning tea and lunch.” Dawn was involved in tramping in Auckland before moving to Mangawhai, and was surprised to find that after more than a decade of hosting walking weekends the town still did not have its own tramping organisation. So last year, she started one. “All the guides had a get together evening after

the last walking weekend and I asked who was interested, and it’s gone from there.” With a membership of 60 and an average turnout of around a dozen, the group meets every third Sunday of the month, with each tramp vetted beforehand. Next month’s excursion on April 21 is a mostly coastal walk in Leigh. On May 19 the group plans to celebrate the first anniversary of their formation with a tramp through Richard Henry’s farm at Tara, followed by cake and coffee in Mangawhai.

Last month, 470 cyclists and their supporters arrived to stay in Dargaville at the end of the first day’s 92 kilometre scenic route ride from Whangarei before embarking on the second day’s 83 kilometre ride to Opononi — a route being promoted as the Kauri Coast Cycleway. This month, The Tour of New Zealand, an eight day nationwide cycling event that starts from both ends of New Zealand on April 27, has competitors flying in from around the world, and it includes Dargaville. “It has to be good for the area with accommodation, meals and shopping,” says Kaipara District Council’s economic development facilitator, Chris Donahoe. “But there are long term benefits too; bringing fit outdoorsy people here and showing them what we have for them. Kaipara’s scenic roads and low traffic volumes are ideal for cyclists and some will return to see the district at a more leisurely pace.”

He said on the Northland Tour commercial accommodation was reported to have been full and visitors were also billeted in private homes. The Kauri Coast Information Centre says accommodation bookings are already coming in for next year. When regular accommodation filled on the last tour, manager Sue Taylor began finding beds in private homes. “That gives visitors a chance to meet locals and learn about the area at a very personal level. It’s the sort of thing that makes people want to come back.” The Commercial Hotel Bed and Breakfast is booked out for the Tour of New Zealand and last month it hosted a dozen Auckland riders touring Northland. Dargaville Business Forum president, Pat Milich, said the tour is an opportunity that “the community must embrace. “It’s not just a one day wonder. It brings a lot of people who wouldn’t be here otherwise and if we create a good impression many will come back.” ■

Maungaturoto Reunion for Otamatea Rugby

Otamatea Rugby Hawks Celebrating 25 Years

 by Sheri O’Neill

With a quarter century on the scoreboard since the formation of the Otamatea Rugby Club, players, coaches, managers and committee members are revisiting the club’s origins and successes. The club formed in 1988 after a merger between the Maungaturoto and Eastern United (Kaiwaka) clubs. Kaiwaka’s Russell Kemp, who had played for both at various times and went on to coach for the new club, remembers “a bit of debate” before the decision was made to unite. “They were two strong sides, each with a lot of club pride, so some were for and some against. But we got there in the end.” The team appellation ‘Hawks’ was added a year or two later. First five for the original Otamatea A team, Todd Morgan, says successes under the Otamatea name were uplifting for the whole area. “We had strong club support and a large

following, with busloads turning up for our big away games.” Russell agrees, and says he is heartened by recent moves reaffirming a close relationship between the club and Otamatea High School. “We need to work together to keep that flow on for young players.” Club president, Kevin Robinson, says he’s looking forward to the 2013 season with the Hawks set to field a strong team under new coach Paul Mant, and the club’s 25th reunion at the Kaiwaka Sports Club on April 19 and 20 will be a great starter. “Following a casual Meet and Greet

on the Friday evening, the Saturday will be filled with rugby, including the Hawks playing Hora Hora and a Golden Oldies match between our Old Boys and Manaia.” The day will conclude with a dinner. Reunion organiser Cheryl Anderson says they’ve endeavoured to invite everyone but have some gaps from 1993–2001. “If anyone has team photos or records, or any Hawks memorabilia to display, please get in touch.” Information and registration: kaiwakasports@gmail.com 09 431 2051 www.kaiwakasports.co.nz. ■

community markets

for historic venue

 by Andy Bryenton

 by Andy Bryenton

The Maungaturoto Residents’ Association are justifiably proud of the sterling work they have done putting Maungaturoto on the map, and now they are ready to launch another new endeavour to attract even more visitors to the town. An afternoon and evening market — the first of which will be held on April 5, has garnered huge support from creative local artists, crafts people and foodies, offering a new twist on the beloved Kiwi tradition of the rural market day. Organisers have brought together over 30 specialist stalls for the inaugural event, including the best of local creative talent and the freshest foodstuffs. Gourmands can enjoy an espresso coffee as they browse farmfresh produce and eggs, succulent seafood, honey, olive oil and all manner of other great ingredients. There will also be an eclectic range of other stalls as well, incorporating everything from cosmetics and lingerie, through to children’s toys, books and clothes, colourful flowers, knitting and artwork. The timing of the markets has been key to their popular acclaim. Beginning at 4pm and running through until 8pm (with a special steak dinner put on for patrons at the nearby Maungaturoto Hotel), it’s a more relaxed time to meet friends and relatives and have a bit of ‘retail therapy’ after a week of work. LOCALLY OWNED

Those with a passion for great food have found their match with a new chef who promises a delectable new menu at the historic Maungaturoto Hotel.

Saturday morning markets are the norm across the North, and stall holders too, appreciate the evening time slot. It’s a similar schedule to the famous evening markets of Mediterranean Europe, where a more relaxed pace of life prevails. And as the markets are indoors, inside the spacious Maungaturoto Centennial Hall, there’s no chance that mother nature will spoil the festivities with wind and rain! Come along and enjoy a look at the fun, fresh, creative side of Maungaturoto — the new afternoon and evening markets are planned to run once per month, and this looks like being a great start for a new Kaipara tradition. ■

Local chef, Aissam Riadi, grew up in Morocco, a nation famous for its delicious cuisine. He inherited a love of cooking from his family, and brought his culinary gifts to fruition over three years of intensive training to become a fully qualified chef, working in the bustling tourist resorts of the Mediterranean coast. In 2009 Aissam came to New Zealand, where he worked at acclaimed Parnell establishment Non Solo Pizza. Later he gave up the stress and strain of the big city to move to Waipu, where he has found the perfect place to call home. His restaurant L’amour d’Kasbah built him a reputation as a master of Mediterranean flavours, from traditional Moroccan dishes through to Spanish and Italian inspired creations, using simple recipes and fresh, succulent ingredients. Now Aissam is ready to treat diners at the Maungaturoto Hotel’s recently refurbished and restored restaurant to a new menu, bursting with local and international flavor. Expect a blend of bold new dishes as well as a unique twist on many beloved

favourites as this renowned local chef brings new verve and energy to one of the region’s most iconic colonial venues. With access to some of the freshest and most delicious fresh produce, meat and seafood in the country, the grand old tavern is situated in the middle of foodie heaven, and their new chef is set to capitalise on this advantage with a changing seasonal menu. ■

Waste matters

Taking good care of water Rural water matters often devolve onto wastewater care, and Fonterra’s initiative to check every farm’s effluent management infrastructure, every year, in a move to address non-compliance with regional council dairy effluent rules, has just moved into top gear. “Our goal is to halve significant noncompliance with council dairy effluent rules within 18 months, then trending to

zero,” said Fonterra operations manager, Gary Romano. “Going out to every farm across the country, every year as part of the annual Farm Dairy Assessment is the best way to achieve this. We will be working in partnership with our farmers to achieve a marked improvement in compliance.” Mr Romano said Clean Streams Accord results for 2008/09, which showed national significant noncompliance with council rules now stood at 15% compared to 12% in the prior year, were ‘completely unacceptable’. There were reasons, but no excuses for the decline. “We will be working in partnership with our farmers to achieve a marked improvement in compliance,” he said. “Compliance monitoring has been stepped up, so obviously more non-

But while these are contributors for the poor result, they are no excuse. “Fonterra is determined to get on top of this effluent issue. The New Zealand community expects it, our customers expect it and the vast majority of our complying farmers expect it. We are determined to deliver on those expectations and partnering with our farmers to provide advice and support is the best way to achieve this. “We will also be looking to regional councils to partner with us as we’re partnering with our farmers so we get

The Corolla rolls onwards

USB port, and Bluetooth wireless cell-phone link. The S has the same convenience features as the LE but sports fog lights, a rear spoiler, and alloy wheels. The only engine offered is the 1.8-litre, 4-cylinder with front-wheel drive.

 by Our Motoring Correspondent

It is a familiar sight on New Zealand roads after being the market leader for more years than I care to recall. The ubiquitous Toyota Corolla has been a family runabout and workhorse, shopping basket, holiday vehicle and well, first car pride for many a motorist. Actually, if we can believe the statisticians, about half of all of the Toyota marque in the country are Corollas. The new 2013 model has some added street appeal, but doesn’t appear to differ too markedly from days gone by. One thing can be depended upon though is that it is a well proven vehicle and this means economy of operation — that’s in gas consumption, as well as maintenance and repair. The cars also do well in the seond-hand market. But, to the new machine. A recent run over Kaipara roads really produced very few surpises, with the 1.8 litre engine performing pretty much as expected — perhaps a perception of quicker on the throttle, but that could have been the smoother automatic transmission. It comes in three levels of comfort, basic L, mid-level LE and topline — the S model. While we were trying out the S model, previous experience vouches for the fact that all the range offered a good steady and predicatble ride. Efficiency rather than huge flair — after all the 1.8 litres underfoot is conservative. It is not a sports car. One thing was noticeable from the start and that’s the adjustable steering column, which is unusual in a smaller car. It makes the vehicle an easy fit, where mum and dad may share it from their differing driving perspectives. On our road trip, we appreciated the I-pod facility — good music along the way with steering wheel button control.

COMBER & SEYMOUR See our advert on Page 5

One thing that impressed us on the overall Kaipara test drive was economy, and that is a major point when it comes to buying a car in today’s world. So for economy, safety features, value for money and relative road comfort, its a tick from us. ■

Inside, our 2013 model was roomy, with little new to distinguish it from early models, but a couple of passengers said it was comfortable enough, as long as their legs were not to long. There was ample space in the rear for our hitchhicker’s pack, with a little over 12 cubic feet of boot. Folding rear seats add to this, if there are no rear seat occupants. So let’s go to the checklist. To our mind, the 2013 Corolla is a middle of the road very efficient family conveyance. If you want more ‘pizazz’ look elsewhere — with perhaps a bigger wallet. Standard on the L model are air conditioning, tilt and telescopic steering wheel, power windows/locks/mirrors, and remote keyless entry. The LE adds cruise control, heated exterior mirrors,

SEPTIC TANK OWNERS How you can save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained. A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. At this stage your septic system is a serious health hazard to you and your children. Human waste produces faecal coliform bacteria, a source of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis as well as Hepatitis A and other diseases. Hepatitis can be a debilitating condition and cause long-term harm to children.

Septi-Cure is Cost effective. By far the most cost effective solution is to pour one litre of Septi-Cure™ down each toilet bowl every six months. This simple action will help keep your system working at top efficiency by reducing solids and scum. Instead of emptying your tank frequently, the reduction in solids and scum saves you expensive pump out costs. Your irrigation field and leach lines will become clear of slimes and blockages so nature can handle the gradual seepage and evaporation for you. When this is happening your system will be operating effectively and not endangering you or your family’s health.

is why you introduce Septi-Cure™ to your septic system every six months for maximum efficiency. A satisfied customer in Hamilton has been using Septi-Cure™ for three years. He says this allows them to have an odour-free septic tank with low maintenance costs. He also says that his service person is amazed at how well Septi-Cure™ works, keeping their tank in very good condition.

Problematic septic tanks – treat with Septi-Cure™. Septi-Cure™ Prevent septic system problems – treat with Septi-Cure™.

What is Septi-Cure™ Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. As they progress through to your irrigation field they feed on the slimes that prevent seepage and evaporation. When seepage and evaporation return to normal, you have reduced the risk of contaminating groundwater and the environment as well as reducing the chances of infection for you and your family. Eventually, they get washed out of the system and have to be replaced to continue their work. This

There are only three remedies. One: stop using the septic system until it recovers. This can take over a month and is not normally practical. Two: excavate your septic system and relocate it. This is very costly and time consuming, sometimes requiring new resource consents and different systems. Three: treat your septic system with Septi-Cure™ every six months.

For Septi-Cure™ - Call: 0800-109-202 Website: www.ecoworld.co.nz Also Available in Farmlands
