p On a chilly April morning, more than 100 years since dawn broke over Anzac Cove at Gallipoli, New Zealanders from city suburbs and country towns made their annual pilgrimage to places of remembrance. They gathered at Dargaville’s war memorial, to remember those who died on Turkish shores and also our servicemen and women who sacrificed in conflicts across the world, despite that ‘war to end all wars — 1914 to 1918.’ They came from service sectors, from community groups, from old soldiers to housewives, with students and young people to the fore. The latter laid poppies and wreaths to honour grandparents and family relatives they had never met, just with a simple desire to remember and honour the fallen, and those who have served. For more Anzac Day coverage see pages 8 and 9.

p Chestnut mare Alison Green from Maungaturoto was recruited at the last minute as a mount for Trooper Craig Linton’s to lead out the Anzac Day parade in Matakohe. The 16-year-old horse was taken out of the paddock on the Smales family farm as a raw cadet and transformed into a first world war soldier’s mount. Under Trooper Linton’s guidance, Alison performed like an old hand, standing perfectly to attention during the last post and lowering on the New Zealand flag. Owners, the Smales family, said they were thrilled to see Alison taking part in an Anzac event.

Matakohe bridges upgrade u by Paul Campbell
The highway through the Matakohe bridges deviation is expected to have its speed limit increased with the completion of asphalt work, roadside barriers and lighting, while landscaping is also underway.

The process transformed the building into a modern fit-for-purpose facility, as befits a community building open to the public,” said society chair, Graham Taylor. “While the refurbishment has taken a while the society is confident that we have achieved a great asset for the community. Having the library and the medical clinic in an easily accessible, modern building will serve the people of Paparoa for the long term. Without the support of many in the local community, this achievement would not have been possible.” That support included a bank facility and community fundraising of thousands of dollars, with the Ready Relief Team based at Maungaturoto raising a
substantial donation. “The community has pledged financial support, which alongside a bank loan has enabled the renovations to occur. The library remains as a tenant, as well as other residential tenants, which help to provide income for the society,” said deputy chair, Libby Jones. “The committee is excited that health services including GP and physiotherapy, and others as available, are ready to be once again operating in Paparoa.” The centre will be operated by Coast to Coast Health Care Ltd. Space in the renovated building, which was occupied by the White Rock Gallery, now moved to Matakohe, will be utilised for treatment and health facilities. ¢

p Landscaping at Matakohe begins
“We were able to seal the full length of the new alignment before Easter and scheduled to asphalt the two bridge decks at the end of (April), and once this is finished along with the lighting and roadside wire ropes, we will be able to increase the speed limit through the work site,” says Fulton Hogan spokesperson, Melanie Norris. “We made the most of the sunny autumn days at Ararua, sealing the new reshaped corner easing. Soon we will be line marking, installing signs and cutting down the bamboo hedge to increase visibility around the corner. Work is due to start on Matakohe East Road corner easing. We are installing
fences and laying mulch and once the soil conditions are right planting will start within the mulched slopes. We have had a few enquiries about the funny looking ‘logs’ that were sitting outside the site office for a few days. These are coir logs, which are biodegradable and made from coconut husk. They are pinned into the slopes before we lay the mulch for landscaping and help with erosion control.” The project ‘finishing touches’ are on schedule for the $26 million-plus deviation, which was prompted by the dangers of the old SH12 route across one-way bridges, the scene of a number of crashes. ¢

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Dear Sir, Following on from the recent article, Six years on the silver screen (Lifestyler April 23 2019), whilst the Anzac Theatre’s cinema trust has recently been able to afford a very costly refurbishment to the cinema’s projector. Unfortunately, this has not entirely fixed the problem with our machine, and we are currently having to loan a projector. It is a very short-term measure, and we are now in URGENT need of funds to help us complete the rest of the upgrade to a brand new laser-powered projector. We will be applying for grants; however, community support is also needed to enable us to move ahead and complete this work so

we can keep our beautiful red doors open to the public. If you can help financially we will gratefully receive donations; either at our upcoming Mother’s Day afternoon tea and screening, at the cinema itself or via our bank account: Kiwibank 38-90090014629-00. All donations above $50 are entitled to a tax refund due to us being a charitable trust and will be receipted. With thanks to everyone who has supported us during the last six years, we look forward to being around for many years to come, with your help. Warm regards, Josie Scott Founding trustee, DCCCT

Mayor’s Memo Kia ora Getting on with the job of setting up the future of our rapidly growing Kaipara District is a theme for what’s happening this season around Council. Firstly, it’s been great to see so many locals attending the council District Plan meetings where everyone’s ideas have been gathered about what’s important about the place and how we all are working towards and shaping our tomorrows. The new Kaipara District Plan will be key to the future of the place. Anyone who’s seeking a vacant industrial-zoned section of land will be well aware how hard (some would say impossible) such a thing is to find today across the Kaipara District; our growth demands have well outstripped the current District Plan and it’s good that we’re making great progress here and so many of you are contributing already. Thanks for helping shape this. A new shape for your Council representatives for the upcoming October 2019 local government elections has also been decided in the last few weeks. The Local Government Commission has determined for us there will be a Mayor elected at large plus eight Councillors, the same number as at present but in a different ‘shape’. There will be four wards of two councillors each, with a new Kaiwaka-Mangawhai ward and reshaped Otamatea and West Coast-Central wards. Watch for extra information about the changes coming your way. It was more than 12 months ago when Council started this important process about how we are all represented, and thanks to the many people who contributed their voices to the Representation Review along the way, from
the pre-consultation through the formal consultation and all the way to the appeals to the Local Government Commission. I’m encouraged about the civic engagement across Kaipara here. In this busy season for civic engagement, we have a record number of submissions for the new Dog bylaw. At this stage there will be nearly two days of hearings for this – lots of people are exercised about their dogs and it’s going to be great to have these clear voices helping shape the dog’s eye view of our place. Speaking of clear voices, at last count there were 555 members on The People’s Panel. I hear this is one of the fastest growing versions of a people’s panel anywhere in New Zealand. This initiative started in late 2018 as a way to bring extra voices to Council processes is expanding rapidly. It’s free to join – www.kaipara.govt. nz/panel - and the more people we have the better this will be. Is your voice here yet? We’re listening. Nga mihi nui,
Jason Smith
Government back down a win for Kiwis u by Matt King, Member of Parliament for Northland
It took 18 months, it caused massive uncertainty for New Zealanders, and the working group that set it up cost us $2 million. After all of that National’s relentless opposition to a capital gains tax finally saw the government back down from a policy that would have hurt New Zealanders. National knew that a capital gains tax would damage small businesses, hurt mum and dad investors, stop investment in start-ups, and stop research and development. It also had the potential to take $65,000 away from the average person’s KiwiSaver over their lifetime. It was ill-conceived and fatally flawed from the start. Moreover, some say NZ First should take the credit for stopping this. Rubbish! If NZ First was serious about putting a stop to a capital gains tax, it would have done it in coalition negotiations or made their position clear 18-months ago when Labour raised it. Instead, it let New Zealanders live through the 18-months of uncertainty while Winston watched the economy decline before finally deciding New Zealanders wouldn’t stand for it. Something we already knew. What were we left with because of NZ First’s intransigence and political grandstanding? A waste of our time and our money — $2 million of it.
Don’t be fooled that this tax happy government won’t still come for us. The prime minister has said she personally believes in a capital gains tax. There is still a range of taxes on the table. They include a vacant land tax, an agricultural tax and a waste tax. New Zealanders just can’t trust Labour with tax, or any statements related to tax. Unlike the government, however, National has made a clear and steadfast statement on tax. We won’t introduce any new taxes in our first term. National believes Kiwis deserve to keep more of what they earn. ¢

Farmers welcome capital gains tax veto
The decision not to proceed with introducing a CGT is “heartening evidence that the coalition government is willing to put well-reasoned and practical considerations in front of ideology,” says Federated Farmers economics spokesman, Andrew Hoggard. “It’s clear the coalition partners have listened to widespread concerns that a capital gains tax has too many downsides, including massive administration costs and the potential to put the handbrake on the progress of small and medium businesses vital to our economy. “It seems to us that New Zealand First has been pivotal in this decision, and we appreciate their pragmatism.” Mr Hoggard added that Federated Farmers is pleased the government is committing to looking at the compliance cost reduction ideas mentioned in the Tax Working Group’s report. “There were a number of these that are worth looking at, including increasing various thresholds (eg, for p Andrew Hoggard provisional tax) and simplifying depreciation and fringe benefit tax, and pleased with the assurance that there removing resident withholding tax on will be no resource rental for water or close company-related party interest fertiliser tax — at least in this term and dividend payments. We’re also of government.” ¢
Large art on show at Mangawhai
The work of four major artists highlighting ‘large works and bold art’ is on show in an exhibition that opened last Friday and runs until Sunday, May 12 at the Mangawhai Artists Gallery.
p Mangawhai artists: Nicola Everett, Wendy Leach, Lyn Middleton and Bineta Hinton
‘Four artists, four distinctive styles; this is an exhibition not to be missed, says the gallery announcement. ‘Wendy Leach, Nicola Everett, Bineta Hinton and Lynn Middleton are experienced artists who are exhibiting together for the first time. ‘Bineta’s work has grown out of her passion for “our land and our people, past and present”. The application of paint is enhanced with icons, graphic work, birds and motifs of “our place”.’ The essence of Wendy’s work is spontaneity, “I explore the possibilities of working with opposites: underlay/ overlay, conceal/reveal, absence/ presence, opaque/translucent,” says
Wendy, “just letting the painting evolve.” Nicola, known in Mangawhai for her Gold and Oil exhibition highlighting current risks of the RMS Niagara, (leaking oil) continues “the balance of nature and how humans have altered it — to a point of no return.” Nicola is a strong environmental advocate. Lynn looks at the world close to home, looking for nature’s patterns, repeating lines and shapes, then makes images in still life. The four artists will be staffing the gallery at 45 Moir Street; Mangawhai Village; 10am–3pm daily. Entry is free. For more information visit mangawhaiartists.co.nz. ¢

Raise the pink ribbon
It’s been more than a quarter century since husband and wife team Karen and Brian Froggatt joined forces to bring their vision of a world-class gym to Dargaville.

May is the month when the Breast Cancer Foundation of New Zealand holds its biggest appeal for funds with pink ribbon breakfast events across the country.
p Brian and Karen Froggatt champions in their own right, trainers of champions and advocates of better health and fitness
Now, as the clock ticks over to their 28th birthday, there’s a lot of success to reflect upon, and a lot more planned for the future. Both Brian and Karen are athletes of note. Brian’s a world championship gold medalist and Commonwealth record holder for the bench press, a Paralympian and multiple recipient of Kaipara’s sportsman of the year award. Karen took gold at the World Bench Press Champs and is a six-time winner of the Kaipara Master Sports Person of the Year, among other awards. Both are current bench press record holders. The establishment they have created is the home of champions, too. Local
sportspeople and athletes have trained here for victory, and many Dargaville citizens come here to lose weight, get fit, enjoy life and be healthy. The gym, converted from what was once a Masonic lodge is filled with weights and equipment of all kinds, but the biggest asset to a prospective member is the formidable wealth of knowledge, which comes from Karen and Brian’s combined more than 65 years of training. A sign on the wall sums up 28 years of success. “If you wish your body to be strong, you must make your body the servant of your mind, and fear not labour and sweat”. ¢
Breast cancer is an affliction, which touches the lives of many Kiwi women, but the BCFNZ stress that it’s devastating for families and friends as well. The money raised goes not only to seeking a cure, and better ways to detect and fight the disease, but also to assist patients as they battle cancer themselves. BCFNZ has seen progress over the years with screening
and detection services rolling out nationwide, and new technologies in medical science joining the fight. Last year more than $2.1 million was raised. It’s easy to host a pink ribbon breakfast of your own, and you’ll find that many cafes and restaurants in the north are going pink for May. For more information, visit pinkribbonbreakfast.co.nz. ¢

Anzac in Kaipara u by Liz Clark
Anzac Day was observed across many Kaipara communities, with dawn parades and some civic ceremonies. At Mangawhai, in Maungaturoto, Matakohe, Dargaville and in other communities, dawn parades attracted strong turnouts including current servicemen and women, military veterans, RSA members, volunteer firemen, St John members and residents. In the current ‘medium threat’ condition, following the tragic event in Christchurch on March 15, police were keeping watch at each Anzac event across New Zealand as wreaths were laid and the Last Post echoed across
the morning before breakfast time called. At Matakohe there was a large turnout at The Kauri Museum where the Paparoa RSA holds its annual civic commemoration. A large crowd formed at 10.30am and moved into ranks to march through the cemetery to raise the New Zealand flag. Wreaths were laid at the first and second world war memorials by senior students from Otamatea High School before an indoor service took place. ¢

A day to celebrate u by Andy Bryenton
Some people will tell you Mother’s Day is a ‘made-up holiday’ designed to sell greeting cards, even though its origins go back to the 16th century, and the sentiment of the day is without a doubt heartfelt. Nevertheless, like the word ’mum’ itself, traditions to honour mothers span the globe, going back far further than the advent of posting colourful cards. Mother’s Day came out of the Christian holy day Mothering Sunday when poor children were given the day off work to visit not their actual mum, but their ‘mother church’ during Lent.
During the years, as early as the time of Shakespeare, this had transformed into a day to say thanks to the matriarch of the family as well as to Christianity’s favourite mother, Mary. Napoleon (despite being a warrior and general) was the first ruler to instigate a formal day for mums. Fete Des Meres is still a big deal in France, and kids, even

day, while there’s no surprise that the chrysanthemum is favoured in Aussie; it had ‘mum’ in the name. Our modern Mother’s Day has indeed been inspired by American traditions, which come from a bittersweet origin. In the early 1900s, Ann Reeves Jarvis wanted to organise a memorial holiday for mums, after the death of her mother. Her idea sparked off a popular movement that went all the way to the president. The holiday became a general celebration of all mothers and grandmothers, setting the date for this holiday worldwide. ¢

grown-up ones, go to clean house for their mothers and cook a lavish threecourse dinner to give them the night off. Brazil’s Dia Das Maes is the second biggest holiday of the year, after Christmas. In this strongly Catholic nation, there is a festival for Mary in her role as mother of Jesus, but the tradition has spilt over into a general celebration of mums all around. Children organise pageants and entertainment and the day often ends with a barbecue street party, once again making sure mum doesn’t have to cook or do the dishes. Vanilla Cake with Maple Buttercream Buttermilk Vanilla Cake ingredients: 2¼ c standard flour ¾ c unsalted butter ½ c white sugar 3 large eggs 1½ tsp of vanilla essence 1 c buttermilk or ¾ of a cup of blue top 2 large spoonfuls of marscapone, ¾ tsp salt 2¼ tsp baking powder Maple butter cream ingredients: 6 large egg whites 1½ c icing sugar 2 c unsalted butter 3 tbsp authentic maple syrup Method: Start by baking two cake layers in separate 20inch round pans. Preheat your oven to 175C, then grease the tins and line with baking paper. Whisk flour and baking powder together then set aside. Use a cake mixer or electric beater to cream the butter and sugar together. Add the eggs one by one, followed by the vanilla. To get the cake perfectly fluffy, the trick is to alternate adding the flour mixture prepared earlier with the buttermilk. Alternate small amounts of each and combine until everything is mixed together. Split cake batter between the trays and bake for 30 minutes, or until a skewer poked into the centre comes out clean. Whisk the mix over this gentle heat for approximately 3 minutes. You may want an electric mixer for the next part. Remove from the heat and continue to whisk until the bowl is cool again; this could take an additional five minutes.

HUNTING AND OUTDOORS
Getting winter ready outdoors u by Andy Bryenton
Those who rose early last Thursday to attend Anzac commemorations at dawn would have felt the chill in the air. It’s definitely on its way, and this winter is predicted to bring storms and wild weather thanks to prevailing long-term climate patterns over the oceans that surround New Zealand. That’s why it’s time to prepare a haven away from cold and damp, ready for the worst that winter can throw at us. When it comes to cold, a good store of firewood and the tools with which to manage it are paramount. A good sharp blade on your chainsaw, an engine that fires up the first time and the safety gear to tackle mountains of logs with peace of mind are all essentials. It’s worth noting that an old or temperamental saw can make hard and even dangerous work out of even the most simple of wood management tasks, so ask yourself; is it worth resurrecting that old ‘dinosaur’ from out of the shed when a new one is so readily available? Similarly, with storms on the way, a tidy yard is one that’s battened down to withstand the blasts from weather fronts and lashing winds. Cutting back
brush, pruning dangerous or rotten branches, clearing around electrical lines and cables; all of these are tasks for a reliable petrol or high capacity battery motor. If there are big repair jobs to take care of (such as securing the iron to shed roofs) in locations away from power, a portable generator is a godsend too, as you can juice up battery tools, power items like drills and circular saws, or even weather a winter power cut. That leads on to addressing the larger problems of a wild winter. If a natural disaster strikes, it’s a good idea to have the tools on hand to get through. Other than the Civil Defence mandated survival kit, which every home should
possess, those in rural areas prone to blackouts or surface water build-up should look at maintaining generators, pumps and the means to keep a fire going in the absence of mains power. HUNTING AND OUTDOORS
Duck season set for a classic u by Fish and Game correspondent
The opening weekend for the game bird season commences this coming weekend on May 4, and should the weather conditions be favourable Fish & Game are expecting above average bags to be harvested this season. The hot summer weather has seen higher concentrations of birds near larger water bodies throughout the region particularly on locations such as the larger rivers and wetlands, irrigation ponds and on the lakes and harbours in the Far North. Northland’s game bird hunters are due for a great opening weekend, and although one cannot predict the weather, our hope is that wet and windy weather conditions prevail for the licence holder’s benefit. Excellent numbers of mallard and grey ducks are spread throughout the region. Areas of higher concentrations will tend to be near crop harvest activities such as maize and kumara. Shelduck numbers are up on last year, and as expected, they will gather and
forage around the chicory and maize crops. Black Swan numbers appear to be similar to previous years, and the northern harbours are a favourite haunt for the birds where they feed on the eelgrass out on the tidal flats. Meanwhile, the ever-resilient Pukeko has increased in numbers dramatically, and they can cause significant damage to horticultural crops. Upland game bird hunting remains a favourite activity for mid to late season hunters. Pheasant and quail are the quarry. Good numbers for both species have been seen throughout the region with a high survival rate of chicks due to the warm summer conditions that prevailed during January and February. Being prepared is the key to success and
hunters should now ready themselves for all possible scenarios. The following weather examples and the way in which you adapt may determine your bag tally prospects. In dry and calm weather, expect birds to take to the saltwater environs during daylight hours. The large rivers, harbours, estuaries and coastal inlets provide excellent opportunities.
When it’s damp, generally the best conditions for hunting waterfowl usually involves a hunting site close to open water with surrounding cover for security. The time is right to gear up now, so head along to your local hunting supplies store, ensure you buy a licence, and plan your decoy strategy for a fantastic opening weekend and beyond. ¢

New green horizons u by Andy Bryenton
The inhabitants of that large landmass north of Mexico and south of Canada seem to like a bit of drama when it comes to their car names. Aside from the F-150, it’s all Cougars, Mustangs, Vipers, Chargers, Demons and Firebirds on the top ten list of American favourites. So it’s surprising and quite revealing that the best market for one of the world’s most popular electric cars is the US, and the car is called the Leaf. In the time that it took the Australians to snap up 1,000 of this five-door, all electric game-changer of a car, the land of Motown and the big block V8 drove away with 114,827. Canadians, just over the border, took home merely 5,500, and while this could be a reflection of the vast distances in their great wild country, it may also say something about the perception and reality of politics. However, less of that now, and more of the car. A new Leaf is coming to New Zealand; the second generation, which has been tried and tested in the US, and that will arrive here with more range, more features and more power than the original. From the outside, it looks better, too. There has been a trend to make electric cars look more ‘normal’ in recent years after very early attempts tried to channel Star Trek. The secondgen Leaf resembles a ‘sensible’ version of Honda’s Civic Type R, without the wings, blades and grilles. We could have wished them to turn the design over to tuning house NISMO, who generated their own amazing RC-ZE1 concept car,
p Gen-2 Leaf is Nissan’s answer to electric auto range issues, with more battery life and improved systems and styling
but this new hatch has trendy urban style written all over it. It also packs a handy 250-kilometre range, 147hp and 320Nm of torque. A ‘plus’ version already live in the US extends the range with a 60kWh battery pack. All of which adds up to a great little car; one, that will never, ever need

figures are because of a US$7,500 federal tax credit to all those who buy a Leaf. In certain states, you get even more back. It seems that their president may be slightly orange, but he’s green as well when it comes to this issue. Nissan has done a great job here. Now our lawmakers need to follow suit. ¢

A superstar at fifty-five u by Andy Bryenton
A star of the silver screen, a racing legend on the track, an innovator on the road and a touchstone of style; this well-known American played a memorable role in movies opposite Steve McQueen and super spy James Bond and then went on to reprise them a generation later. There have been a few facelifts along the way, as one might expect from a superstar, but each one has made this age-defying icon more powerful and better looking. We’re talking, of course, not about an actor from the golden age of cinema, but about a car. The Ford Mustang turns 55 this April, and that’s a birthday well worth celebrating. Through six generations and a roll-call of racing wins at events like the gruelling Daytona 24 Hours, the Mustang has been a ‘halo’ vehicle for generations. It’s regularly cited as one of the most desirable, yet obtainable, classics. Now the latest evolution of the muscle car with the stallion on the grille has been voted the world’s favourite for four years running. Just last week a massive, multimillion dollar Mustang Owner’s Museum was opened in Concorde, North Carolina to celebrate the many classic variants of this American legend. Meanwhile, the Mustang returns to the track down under, with a modified racing version of the powerful V8 contesting the Aussie supercars series for 2019. For the collector, the

enthusiast and the passionate driver, the current model of Ford Mustang is available as a convertible or coupe, with the option of an inline four turbocharged EcoBoost motor or a thumping V8 for that classic ‘soundtrack’. Both benefit from next-generation handling and suspension, which puts them ahead
of other modern muscle cars when the road gets twisty. From its debut at the 1964 World’s Fair in New York, through to the triumphant celebration of 55 years in the limelight, there’s a reason the Mustang has stood the test of time. Drive one and find out. ¢
