p Television comedian and ‘volunteer journalist’ Guy Williams visited Dargaville last week to bring back the town’s kūmara harvest-themed beauty pageant as a more inclusive, modern event. Along the way, the host of New Zealand Today found time to visit some other local landmarks and talk to the kind of Kiwi characters who define his brand of irreverent wit. A stop off at Big River FM saw Williams interviewed by possibly the youngest rock DJ in New Zealand, Seth Eve-Rumsey, who quizzed the comedian on his impressions of Dargaville. Vote of confidence for renewable energy u by Andy Bryenton
The four major elected councils of Northland have prepared a joint submission on Transpower’s proposal for a Renewable Energy Zone in Northland, coming out in approval of the scheme. Last month, Northpower CEO Andrew McLeod and Top Energy chief executive Russell Shaw presented information to the council in early March, leading up to a joint consultation on Transpower’s proposal to make Northland an area where it’s easy to establish renewable energy generation facilities, such as wind and solar farms. Now representatives of the Kaipara District Council, Northland Regional Council, Whangārei District Council and Far North District Council have joined forces to produce a document delivering a positive response to Transpower. ‘Your consultation asks whether renewable energy zones are right for Northland. Our submission on behalf of all Northland councils supports the concept, noting the social, economic and environmental benefits we believe it will bring to the region,’ the Northland region’s four mayors said in their collective statement. While acknowledging the benefits to the region in terms of employment, electricity supply resilience, costing and environmental protection, the joint councils also opine that getting the

Support has come in from around New Zealand, with offers of aid, both financial and material, to assist with buying survival gear, medical supplies, body armour and more. Firefighters tackle the tower

This May, a 328-metre vertical climb up 1,103 stairs faces two firefighters from Maungaturoto, while weighted down with 25kg of emergency rescue kit.
World Water Day was celebrated on March 22; in conjunction with the day, dairy company Fonterra has added its strength to an effort to restore the health of the Kaipara Harbour.
The annual Firefighter Sky Tower Stair Challenge raised nearly $1,370,000 for Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand (LBC) in 2021. This year, station officer Glenn Orford and firefighter Jono Geraghty have volunteered to tackle the tower, raising money to fight the deadly disease. “I think everyone in the community knows someone who has been affected by p Station officer Glenn Orford and firefighter Jono Geraghty are in training to climb the Sky Tower in full firefighting kit, blood cancer, so this is very raising money in the fight against blood cancer worthwhile to me,” says Glenn. “I do it because it keeps me fit and May 28, both Glenn and Jono will suit up because it’s a very worthy cause.” to scale the 51 flights of stairs that lead “There are seven Kiwis diagnosed to the top of Auckland’s Sky Tower, but with blood cancer every day,” said 2021 the real work will be done beforehand. trophy winner, Heretaunga firefighter That work involves raising pledges Kevin Hodges. “I push myself because from the community to help fund the I see what LBC do and the difference good work of LBC in laboratories and they make.” hospitals nationwide. “At Fonterra we care about the environment and the communities in which we operate and we’re always looking for ways to improve. One area that’s always a focus for us is water,” says Fonterra’s head of corporate sustainability, Lee Stewart. For this reason, the cooperative has partnered with the Kaipara Moana Remediation Programme in a decadelong environmental restoration project. The defining feature of the Kaipara District, spanning more than 6,000 square kilometres, is a breeding ground for marine life and seabirds and represents a unique ecosystem. “A remediation programme of this size and scale is a New Zealand first, providing an exciting opportunity to support a shifting generational change to restore the harbour for our future,” says Lee. Combating erosion and soil transfer into the harbour is the first item on the agenda. To this end, the Kaipara Moana Remediation group (KMR) is organising a major planting campaign during the winter of 2022. They are calling this their foundation planting, as they note that

Peanut project positive Recycling’s high five u by Andy Bryenton
u by Andy Bryenton
Trials to determine the viability and yield of peanuts as an arable crop in the Te Kōpuru region have sprouted success, with a selection of cultivars just weeks away from harvest.
Thanks to the efforts of Kaipara Refuse and the Kaipara District Council, a whole new category of plastics can now be recycled locally.
Greg Hall, project manager of the site and Northland Inc representative, says that the free-draining, loamy soil of the half-acre test site has produced excellent conditions. “It’s awesome. While we have faced weed pressure following the humidity and rainfall of late summer, the crops have progressed well,” says Greg. “ T h e p e a n u t s w e re undersown with precise fertiliser placement, and we can see the advantages of that p Northland Inc’s Greg Hall inspects a bountiful crop of peanuts, as harvest time approaches for Te Kōpuru’s trial as we get close to harvest.” farm site Pic’s Peanut Butter, a Kiwi company producing premium peanut- will be when farmers are able to adopt based spreads, has expressed a keen this, and want to get involved.” interest in the trial and has assisted in Considering New Zealand’s hunger bringing in automated harvest machinery. for peanuts, approximately 20,000 It’s to Pic’s that the test nuts will be sent tonnes each year, this may be a lucrative to undergo testing to determine which alternative to other farming practices, or cultivars have performed best. work as a rotational crop, fixing nitrogen Vaughan Cooper, acting chief executive in the soil for future pasture growth. of Northland Inc, was on-site to supervise This planting is a first for New Zealand, some manual weeding activities and and the next stage will come after Pic’s gauge the state of the crop just before it peanut experts make their assessment is dug from the soil. of all eight cultivars. Type five plastics include several common types of plastic containers, such as ice cream, butter and yoghurt tubs. The plastics can be identified by the small logo printed underneath, a number five surrounded by three arrows. While some of these numbers mean ‘this item cannot be recycled’, others mean that it can, like the well-known type one plastics used in bottles. “Please always check the number before popping it in your recycling bag,” says KDC spokesperson Ruby Mitchell. “Kaipara Refuse process number one, number two, and now number five

Please also make sure to rinse well; there is a brilliant team of real people who sort all the recycling.” The addition of plastics in the fifth category means that a lot more rubbish will never be sent to the landfill, and there’s more recirculation in the supply chain. Plastics marked with the number five can now be placed in KDC yellow bags or taken directly to your local refuse station, where they fall under the same category as other recyclable plastics and glass. Bins and bags will be set up to receive them, so long as they are clean and sorted. ¢

Otamatea High School students rose to the challenge of an early autumn triathlon event, returning to the road and track as Covid restrictions ease, enabling a resurgence in all manner of sports district-wide.
The Cornerstone Charitable Trust, which already produces healthy school lunches for many local Dargaville students, is planning a breakfast club to promote better learning and nutrition, but they need community help.
“The day started off foggy, but the sun broke through, bringing a lovely sunny and windless day, perfect for the triathlon,” says Otamatea High School sports coordinator Tina Holst. “Even though there were only a small number of entries, all students gave it their full commitment and cheered each other on at the finish line.” This year, the cycle section was held on the school- p A new cycle course courtesy of the Maungaturoto Country Club added to the fun of Otamatea High a dj a c e n t M a u ng atu roto School’s triathlon challenge; Noah Martin rides toward a Country Club property, using winning time part of the walkway track, which the students enjoyed mountain In the 200-metre swim, threebiking. The not-for-profit group plans to offer free healthy breakfasts to all comers, so long as they are school students, between 7am and 8.30am weekdays. The programme would be housed in the Lighthouse Church buildings on Victoria Street, putting it within easy walking distance of many of the town’s schools. Organisers plan to escort children to school, after they have enjoyed a breakfast in walking bus groups. “It’s about children going to school with good nutrition so that they can put their learning first instead of worrying about hunger,” says Lorin Hona, spokesperson for the Cornerstone group. “We are all about health, wellbeing and nutrition, and as we already supply school lunches, there is crossover in both foodstuffs and staff skills.” The breakfast club programme would level the playing field for economically challenged families. Many are reportedly feeling the pressure of high fuel prices, record-high rents, grocery price rises and the after-effects of Covid-19 on supply chains. Numerous studies have proven that children who are well nourished perform better at academic tasks, making food availability and quality a way to break down privilege and systemic bias.
THERE IS A STORY BEHIND EVERY SMILE and we would like to be part of yours!
p Cornerstone Charitable Trust already provides healthy lunches, like these at Dargaville Primary School, and want to expand their offering to free breakfasts for all students in Dargaville
However, as the Cornerstone Charitable Trust is not government funded to deliver this programme, it is seeking help from those who may be able to contribute foodstuffs suitable for a healthy breakfast. “This is only going to be achievable with community support, but we think people will want to help our kids learn and have a fair go at education,” says Lorin. “That community support could help fill our cupboards with simple things like fruit, eggs, toast and cereal — so we can help those in need.” ¢

Northport development Safety first in Kaiwaka plan welcomed

u by Paul Campbell
Plans have been confirmed for a significant upgrade in the development of Northport to compete with Auckland as an import-export destination. Kaipara Mayor Jason Smith has welcomed the news that the deepwater facility at Whangārei is to apply for resource consent to expand to handle container traffic while continuing to develop proposals for a shipyard and drydock. “In 2020, the three mayors of the north proposed a significant upgrade of Northport so it would be able to handle Auckland port’s import/export functions when the port in the city is eventually closed down,” Dr Smith said. “Since then, major funding for a rail line has been confirmed to connect Northport to the main trunk line, and the main rail line between Whangārei and Auckland has been upgraded to take large shipping containers. “Things are lining up well for the promising future for Northport and this recent move to expand container potential
of the facility is important for Northland as a lead connection point for New Zealand with the world.” Northport has advised that because of continuing supply chain pressure and growing demand for handling facilities from shipping companies. “The company should progress that part of its Vision for Growth that is ready to proceed, namely the container storage, handling and transportation facility. “This will give Northport the container capability to service the growing and changing freight needs of the upper North Island.” No details of the costs of the new development have been released. Last year it was reported that the proposed developments, including container facilities and shipyard, were estimated at $800 million. ¢

OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE NEW ADVERTORIAL
Correction
A family feel

The historic Kaihu Tavern is now open and welcoming people to enjoy the bar and atmosphere. “We were looking for a couple of acres to get out of Auckland and live a nice quiet life. The land came with a pub, so we thought we’d just open it,” Kaihu Tavern’s new owners Suzan Dennison and Paul Nicoll say. “Everyone is welcome as long as they are respectful. The environment we want to create is a safe one.” Suzan and Paul took charge of the venue in late December last year; they recently opened it up for the public to enjoy with them. The couple envisions the tavern to be a vibrant and friendly place and has tidied and made additions to the building. Some existing memorabilia from previous owners were found and rehung on the walls. “We want to keep the historical vibe with the tavern and we want to embrace the history of the place. “We want the pub to be family orientated and a destination for people to bring their classic cars. “We’d like to give the community credit for their support and Richard Downey in particular — we wouldn’t have been able to do it without them. “We enjoy the area and the community, and we are hellbent on finding a cook. Masters of Metal & wood Kaipara’s pioneering engineer in residence u by Andy Bryenton
During colonial times, great feats of engineering were often required to support industry, transport and the foundation of new towns. In an age when specialisation was largely unknown, one of the top jobs in a region was that of resident engineer. These early engineers were often trained in a wide range of disciplines that we would classify as civil engineering, metalworking and the mathematics of design and fabrication. Some even studied chemistry and the then-cuttingedge science of electricity. MIDWAY CRANES AND TRUCKS LTD

Most were also engineers in the truest sense, able to operate, repair and work on the large steam engines that powered the industrial revolution and the British Empire. Masters of Metal & wood Engineering means problem solving u by Andy Bryenton
Engineer Tony Cotton has a new home in the picturesque farmland outside Dargaville and a new business solving the engineering problems of locals. With a background as varied as his set of tools and skills, the experienced metalworker and problem-solver has a wealth of knowledge to draw upon. From an apprenticeship on the railways through to working on neon signs high above the city streets and keeping race cars on track at international events, Tony has seen all kinds of engineering conundrums and fixed them with ingenuity. “A highlight was helping to build the ‘sharp’ sign on top of the Auckland Hospital, which was a landmark for many years. I was just coming out of conventional engineering and enjoyed the challenge of adding aspects of construction and creativity,” says Tony. “I was always interested in motorsport, too. I used to rally myself but sold my car when I got into motorsport engineering. If it was both work and play, it could have taken over my life,” he jokes, pointing to a picture of his classic Ford Escort rally car out on a special stage. Tony took his skills with metal to the top end of motor racing. He built a Mitsubishi
Evo 5 for the World Rally Championship, took a Nissan to Bathurst when the smaller cars were permitted to challenge that legendary race and worked on NZ Touring Cars. He says the philosophy of a race engineer and technicians is to keep the driver in the race by any means possible, so long as it’s safe. The move to Dargaville has been a positive one, with Tony building his own workshop and home in a specially crafted barn structure with views over rolling farmland. While his home includes finishing touches blending metalwork and creativity, it’s the workshop where almost anything can be fabricated or fixed. Here you’ll find a large turret mill and lathe, welding equipment and all the tools of the trade. Tony says he’s got a good grounding in helping the agricultural sector keep its machinery in the field. He’s always happy to have people bring him their engineering puzzles, problems and challenges. These could be anything from interior design elements to precision parts for

FARMING
A country experience u by Amy Fifita
Peter and Sara Ball’s Tokatoka Views Farmstay have unique rural adventures for travellers wanting something more than standard hotel service. They have run the farmstay for the past seven years; from an initial idea, their venture has taken off. Remaining open during Covid and the border closures, they had many Auckland-based visitors. “Our passion is to change people’s opinions on farming one person at a time. They get an almost authentic farm experience,” Peter says.

“The guests get to ride horses, go for a guided walk up Tokatoka, teach them about Māori legends and tell them about things to do in the area.” “When Covid struck, the majority of our guests were Chinese from Auckland. During the holidays, we are flooded by people; in between — it is weekend visits.” At the farmstay, there are 22 various animals ranging from horses to lizards. They offer guests an interactive experience, and some of the animals can be hand-fed and petted. “We always used to offer a dairyshare experience that was hands-on. It is uplifting, explaining to non-farming people how the dairy industry operates and seeing people out of their comfort zone. “We have beef cows here and a whole selection of farmyard animals. It is interesting to see how the guests interact with them.” Peter says he enjoys getting to know people from different walks of life and nationalities. He recalls travelling to China and reuniting with former guests, and they would show him and Sara around their country. “For me, it’s the stimulation of having strangers in the house and learning about their lives and where they’re from. We’ve always picked up hitchhikers and had

them stay; we’re used to having strangers in the house,” said Peter. “They will cook for us sometimes, and we get to explore different cuisines. It’s a hobby that we can switch on and switch off when we want. “In seven years, we’ve never had a bad guest. They’re all interesting and stimulating. People who want to stay in your house are sociable and want to know the area. “It’s really gratifying when people come here and revisit, later, with their children. Revisits are 10 per cent of our
business. We’ve made a lot of friends over the years. People who stay in your home are different. They are generally more educated and open.” During the next twelve months, the overseas border will gradually open, meaning more tourists will embrace New Zealand’s shores. With some Covid measures being relaxed people can enjoy cafes, restaurants and farmstays more often. “If you want an informal way of travelling, bed and breakfasts and farmstays are the way to go,” Peter said. ¢

Ready for a safer season u by Andy Bryenton
The terrain can quickly change from hard and dry to muddy and treacherous quickly as autumn bites, with dark morning starts and rain on the horizon. Dargaville Honda motorcycles see a lot of quad bikes this time of year, as savvy farmers book in advance to ensure smooth riding and no breakdowns in the cold and damp. Honda manager Bruce McKenzie says there are some key areas of a working quad deserving attention after a hot and dusty summer to ensure a safe and productive winter. “Tyres are probably number one,” he says. “Dry, hard conditions in summer can really wear down tyre tread and reduce the amount of available grip, which is not an insurmountable issue when the ground is firm. “However, when the weather turns, and the mud comes back, poor tyre tread could put you in a ditch unexpectedly.” Tyres make all the difference in the mud, which can be a major feature of Kaipara rural winters, and new advancements in tread technology mean that extra grip is readily available. However, it’s other subsystems that support getting power to the ground as well. Bruce recommends a service to ensure that dust and grit haven’t worn down brake and suspension components, and a once-over for the engine and drivetrain to ensure easy starts and good performance on cold dark mornings. The nightmare for many farmers is a breakdown far from the homestead, with heavy rain falling. A timely service can stop this from happening in many cases. Then, there’s the electrical system that can support all manner of extras on a modern quad and takes a hammering when the need for more lighting or 12-

volt accessories is at hand. It is especially true when it’s time for calving. However, cold conditions can affect worn batteries: better to get a new replacement that can be relied upon. Helmets, seat covers and wet weather gear complete the picture. Perhaps the last word in quad safety is anti-rollover protection, which is currently part-subsidised by ACC. The accident compensation providers are offering a cash-back programme for popular devices like the Lifeguard and Quadbar, which can prevent excessive harm should the worst happen and your quad suffers a roll-type
