p Harding Park’s mountain bike tracks have been a success since their inception. Now, the Dargaville sporting location has hosted its first formally-timed competition. A friendly contest, which was nevertheless hotly contested, the Kaipara Cycling MTB Champs saw mountain bikers pit their skills against the downhill course for the title of ‘king and queen of the mountain’. With on-the-spot results in, Dani Lowe was crowned Queen of the Hill while Kasey Wynyard took up the sceptre as King of the Hill. With times of on, or under, one minute to descend even the most challenging tracks, you could try and match this royal effort yourself; all you’ll need is a bike and a pinch of courage.
Regulate tank water say councils u by Andy Bryenton
In a surprise addendum to their joint submission on water supply reform under the government’s new Three Waters policy implementation, Northland’s four civic councils have suggested to the central government that home water systems should be regulated and inspected at an unknown cost.

p Beachcombers and anglers on the east coast may have encountered one of the rarest of sea creatures seen on our shores recently; the small, ‘winged’ sea slugs known colloquially as blue dragons. The three-centimetre creatures are scientifically known as pelagic nudibranchs. They live their whole lives out in the oceans, only rarely being blown ashore by storms and currents. Stormy weather across the Tasman recently may have accounted for the encounters reported on social media by Mangawhai locals. However, don’t touch. The blue dragon eats poisonous man-of-war jellyfish and shares their painful sting.

Fundraiser calls for trust formation u by Paul Campbell
A major volunteer-driven fundraising initiative in Maungaturoto, which has made a huge financial contribution to the wider community in the past three years, needs to be formalised as a trust to ensure that it continues into the future, with a public meeting called for Friday, April 9. The Den has been run by local Albie Paton and a team of supporters as a second-hand and donated goods emporium in the former Scout hall near the Maungaturoto Country Club in Bickerstaffe Road. It has raised $250,000-plus during the past three years. A major beneficiary has been the Riverview Rest Home dementia unit building project, now nearing completion by the Maungaturoto Community Charitable Trust. ”At the moment, The Den is a very loose group doing the work with me as the sole trader, and the administration now needs to become much more stringent,” said Albie. “The time has come for an organisation to run it, or it will cease to exist.” As well as the dementia unit p Albie Paton wants a trust to take over his build, The Den has provided funding successful fundraising to the Northland Rescue Helicopter and filled a wide variety of local financial Rotary, Lions, residents associations needs, including Plunket and St John. and also the Kaipara District Council. “We also plan to help the North “The old Otamatea area runs from Kaipara Coast Guard with up to $5,000. A taste of tourism

A regular Kaipara Harbour cruising and charter vessel has taken on a role as a bicycle transport specialist, most recently ferrying keen cyclists taking part in the Tour Aotearoa event across the harbour.
A two-day familiarisation tour, known as a famil, was held just before Easter to profile the Dargaville and Kauri Coast hospitality sector to frontline staff who send visitors to the area.
The Tour Aotearoa is a self-supported 3,000km cycle ride between Cape Reinga and Bluff and can be ridden in either direction. In February, a brevet event got underway northwards following a set course, via 30 photo checkpoints, which must be completed between 10 and 30 days. During seven days, up to 100 riders a day started the course, with organisers suggesting that number kept the impact on Northland to reasonable levels. p Kewpie Too skipper Terry Somers delivers bicycle deck “We have always been cargo at Pahi pretty busy ferrying cyclists “Tour Aotearoa cyclists have got from Pouto across to Helensville and vice versa,” says Kewpie Too captain to know us pretty well. Dargaville businesses have pitched in to assist in the fight against Cystic Fibrosis by adding more prizes to the pool in the town’s great bake-off. The contest began with heat one last weekend and culminates on May 1.

The theatre seeks to continue bringing quality cinema to Dargaville. The Lions Club has hired quizmaster James Nyssen and sharpened up some brain-teasing questions to test teams made up from local businesses, clubs, neighbours and groups of friends. The action kicks off on Thursday, April 15 at the Dargaville Community Hall in Hokianga Road, right opposite the Anzac Theatre. “Many of our local businesses have put up their hand to help, for which we

Protecting the kauri u by Ann van Engelen
Tangiteroria School students spent time with Adrian from Northland Regional Council learning about the importance of kauri trees in the school bush reserve last term.
p Tangiteroria School students with Northland Regional Council staff kauri dieback tutor Adrian
“We are lucky to have a few kauri trees in our school bush that we are kaitiakitanga of,” says teacher Eden Hakaraia. “We discussed how the trees are under threat from kauri dieback and what we can do to help save them. We also watched a video to help with our understanding of the situation. They learned that we all must take action to save the mighty kauri from extinction.” Kauri dieback can kill kauri of all ages. It is a disease caused by a microscopic fungus-like organism called Phytophthora agathidicida (PA). It lives in the soil and infects kauri roots, damaging the tissues that carry nutrients and water within the tree, effectively starving it to death.
There is currently no proven cure or treatment, and nearly all infected kauri die. The disease is easily spread through soil movements, for example, when soil is carried on dirty footwear, animals, equipment and vehicles. A pinhead size of soil is enough to spread the disease. A tree may not show any symptoms of the disease at all. “It is important that we all understand how to prevent the spread of kauri dieback and share this message. The students want to bring awareness to ‘Save our kauri’ and would now like to add a kauri dieback station to the entrance of the bush. This is so all visitors can ‘scrub, check, spray’ their footwear to protect the school kauri trees.” ¢
Fire permits suspended Fire permits have been universally suspended across the Kaipara, as scattered rainfall has done little to quell underlying dry conditions. Deputy principal rural fire officer Michael Champtaloup says this situation may change if rainfall persists and strengthens. The fire service will advise the public about any future status changes. “We have experienced an increase in the number of large uncontrolled fires over the last few weeks, due to very dry soil conditions,” he said. “Despite the recent rainfall, soil moisture has been drier than the historical average. We are experiencing what is being called a ‘green drought’, meaning the vegetation has a superficial appearance of green, but underneath is dry and very flammable.” The fire season prior to this announcement was ‘by permit only’, meaning that the Kaipara is now in a de facto fire ban.
Council plan review ending Consultation on the Northland Regional Council’s Long Term Plan designed to meet new central government requirements, boost regional resilience and realise the north’s potential will end on Friday, April 16. A series of public ‘have your say’ events wound up last week. The council says while people would prefer not to face rates rises, most supported the rationale behind its proposed $71 annual rise in the average regional rates bill for the next year. As proposed, the roughly $1.36 a week the regional council’s newly-released proposals for its Long Term Plan (LTP) 2021–2031 would add to the average ratepayer’s rates bill from July reflects a delicate balancing act. For the first year of the 10-year plan, the council is proposing around $6.2 million of new work spread across three ‘activity groupings’ — natural environment, community resilience and regional leadership. Further information about the LTP is available online from nrc.govt.nz/futureplan.

The humble carrot cake u by Jessica Keesing
Carrot cake, for me, is a thing of delicious goodness and reminds me heavily of my mum every time I bake it. It’s something that when we lived on the farm, we had a lot of as it was one of my dad’s favourites, and it was just such a treat. I once feared cakes until I made this cake into cupcakes, and the love affair with making cakes began, well, kind of. Give the humble carrot cake a crack. You just simply can’t fault it. Unless you don’t like carrots, I suppose. INGREDIENTS 1 ½ cups vegetable oil 2 cups raw sugar 4 eggs 1 tsp vanilla extract 1–2 tsp cinnamon 3 cups grated carrot 2 tsp baking soda 2 cups wholemeal flour
CREAM CHEESE ICING 1 tsp vanilla extract ¾ cup icing sugar 250g cream cheese ¼ cup melted butter
METHOD Line a 20cm springform pan with baking paper and set aside. Preheat oven to 160C. Combine vegetable oil, raw sugar, eggs and vanilla extract in a bowl. In a separate bowl combine flour, cinnamon, baking soda and carrot. Add wet ingredients to the mixture and mix until just combined. Bake for 50 minutes at 160C or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let cool and then ice. ICING Combine cream cheese, melted butter and vanilla extract in a bowl and mix until creamy, sift in icing sugar and mix until smooth.

Kaiwaka will be better connected with the construction of two footbridges and two underpasses, spanning streams dividing the town, making it necessary for pedestrians to dare the traffic flow on State Highway One currently.
p Kaiwaka is currently bisected by the traffic of State Highway One, but new bridges will reconnect the old and new part of the town
This major roadway carries more than 10,000 vehicles a day. The footbridges will make it safer for pedestrians to cross the river than the current state highway bridge, which offers little separation between them and the traffic. The footbridges are made possible with a $750,000 grant from the Provincial Development Unit announced last year. Kaiwaka-Mangawhai ward councillor Jonathan Larsen and community leader Derek Christiansen have campaigned for many years for better east-to-west access in Kaiwaka. It was this pair who Shane Jones credited with the inspiration when he announced
funding from the Provincial Growth Fund for the project before the 2020 general election. Engineers and surveyors have completed their work and passed on bridge specifications to DOC, which owns the land the bridge will sit on. Next, the KDC will consult with Te Uri o Hau to report on the potential cultural impact of the bridges. All going well, and subject to approval by DOC, the council expects the bridges to be completed in February 2022, with the grand opening pencilled in for March. Both bridges will link to an underpass that goes under the state highway to the east side. ¢

Paparoa is turning green u by Andy Bryenton
Paparoa’s community garden is growing strong, with the call out to the community for more hands to till the soil. Whakatipu Paparoa (Grow Paparoa) started as a community initiative 11 years ago, focussing on arts, crafts and gardening. Soon it became apparent that the garden aspect was immensely popular and a large, fertile space was prepared nearby the site of the old Paparoa Bowling Club. A committee, chaired by local resident Jan Dallas, oversees the busy garden. “Everyone’s contribution matters”, says Jan. “Anyone can always call in and have a cuppa and a chat. It’s a safe place for people to drop in. It’s a gathering place.” All the produce from the garden
goes to the Paparoa Food Bank and the Otamatea Community House for distribution to people who need it. Sometimes, produce is passed onto people directly from the garden. “No questions asked, no strings attached,” says Jan, echoing the overarching Whakatipu Paparoa philosophy. Growing a garden to grow community spirit is their watchword. To this end, the Grow Paparoa team has held educational visits for local educators and students to see how horticulture works at a grassroots level. Numerous local businesses and organisations have made contributions p Help Paparoa’s garden grow; the success of the Whakatipu Paparoa project means that more volunteer gardeners are needed now

to expand the garden space for the benefit of all. Thanks to their generosity, there’s water for irrigation, a worm farm, shelter for growing seedlings, garden tools and no shortage of new plants to nurture. However, now the gardeners need help of a different kind — more volunteers to help bring in the harvest. Paparoa people with a bit of time on their hands can learn about gardening,
help their neighbours, feed the needy and make friends by signing up to join Jan and her crew. Green fingers are not a requirement, though long morning teas, lots of laughs and a sense of satisfaction are promised for all volunteers, according to the Whakatipu Paparoa team. Dining in high style u by Paul Campbell
Chef Paul Smith was usually serving meals and fine wines at 30,000 feet in the air somewhere in the world, as well as keeping his feet firmly earthbound on leave from his job with Air New Zealand and serving the same fine fare at his home in Paparoa’s old National Bank of New Zealand building. Along came Covid, and those regular trips to Singapore, Los Angeles and Shanghai ended, leaving Paul grounded but still running Paul Smith Dines in the bank venue and home bought in 2013. He is on standby to get back in the air while still operating his earthbound business between flights when the long-hoped-for ‘bubble’ opens up for overseas travel once again. Paul first ran his signature business from a warehouse in Auckland but missed having a garden, so he jumped at the chance to purchase the heritage bank building even though it was a long way from the city. “I can spend an hour getting from Greenlane to Newmarket, so another half hour to Paparoa is nothing,” he says. “I completed my chef’s apprenticeship and worked for the Sheraton Hotel chain, rising to chef de cuisine in Brisbane and Hobart before moving to Christchurch and Noah’s Hotel for six years as conference and banqueting manager.” Then it was into the air, and for the next

using his talents to create gastronomic delights. Guests are offered a minimum of five courses with special treats. ”I like to offer food I think of as being like liquorice allsorts with layers of different flavours and textures,” he says. ¢

Coastal hazard maps release

OPINION
Food for thought
u by Paul Campbell
u by Jane Gray
A suite of maps showing areas at risk of coastal erosion and coastal flooding are due to be released in mid-April as part of a move by Northland’s councils to help communities prepare for and adapt to climate change. Chair of the Northland Regional Council’s Climate Change Working Party Amy Macdonald says based on new aerial survey data and updated 50 and 100-year projections, the maps will be used to inform decision-making to minimise the risks of coastal hazards. “As an example, Northland’s three district councils are required to use them to manage where and how development occurs.” All four Northland councils have been working closely on climate change and, in 2018, had established a shared staff working group to work on a collaborative approach to climate change adaptation across the region. “It’s no understatement to say that climate change is the single largest environmental challenge of our time,” Cr Macdonald says. “How we prepare for it now will greatly influence the future shape of Northland in many ways. “These maps help us all understand the coming changes and will provide a catalyst for important conversations about Northland’s future.” Councillor Macdonald says working with district councils and affected communities is crucial to ensuring we’re collectively better prepared for climate change.
p NRC’s climate change councillor Amy Macdonald
“Councils all over the nation are grappling with how best to support and prepare their communities as climate change effects increase over time. It includes coastal hazards, flood, drought and permanent inundation from sealevel rise.” The council will be releasing draft maps in mid-April and contacting those in mapped areas to make sure people are informed and what it might mean for them prior to finalising the maps in a couple of months’ time. ¢
New Zealand is a country of pine trees, sheep, cattle and orchards, just to name a few of our agricultural industries. Stating the obvious, I know. So why are we running out of timber for housing? Why do we import meat and veggies? Why can’t we pay our farmers a fair price at the gate rather than what offshore markets dictate? Just imagine if our government actually supported the mantra we are all trying to live by, and that is — buy local. I don’t know about you, but I would prefer to buy local fruit and veggies rather than imported produce. I would certainly rather eat locally grown beef and lamb. More than 40% of New Zealand land is used in the production of food, and yet we still import produce from overseas. I dare say I have some very simplistic views, like re-establishing our manufacturing sector to produce a lot of what we import, for example, car assembly, whiteware and furniture. Can we motivate the public to invest in business, not housing? There is a television programme called the Dragons’ Den, in which a panel of successful business people will be pitched a start-up business idea. If the concept stacks up, they invest capital as well as their experience and expertise. I don’t think we need a television show to do this as I dare say there are some
innovative thinkers out there who already invest in start-ups. Such a vote of confidence is amazing, and I would love to hear how it is going for you. I bet the business mentor or investor is few and far between compared to the amount of property speculators out there stuffing it for the first home buyers trying to climb on to the property ladder. What else can we do to support local? Use NZ-owned banks; the money stays on our shores. The more we support them, I am sure, the more they will be able to support us. Provincial towns need banking facilities and preferably more than three days a week — something a lot of the offshore banks seem to have forgotten. Why isn’t the government investing in business at a grassroots level? Not just the big ones like Air New Zealand but a business that is just starting out, offering more grants, or making the grants easier to get. There will be a lot of reasons this ‘can’t happen’ but there only needs to be one reason it can. Let us know your thoughts email: info@integrity.nz.

Chronicle of a founding family u by Robert Montgomery
At the book launch of The Montgomerys of Arapohue on Saturday, March 20, the old-established Kaipara family did more than remember pioneers Thomas Montgomery and Alice Ann Vincent, who were married in 1881. DNA research re-establish the link to their family in Northern Ireland, which parted when Thomas emigrated to New Zealand in 1865. So, the day began with a quaich ceremony, pronounced ‘quake’. A quaich is a traditional Scottish, twohanded cup of whisky offered with both hands to show trust between family and friends. When Pauline Hilliam, clan chief of the Northern Wairoa, passed the quaich to her cousin, Trevor Bleakley from Northern Ireland, she brought the descendants of Thomas and Robert Montgomery back together. The Montgomerys of Arapohue is set in Northern Wairoa in the late19th and early-20th centuries. It tells the story Thomas and Alice Ann Montgomery and their family of 14 in the context of regional, national and world events. It is dedicated to the three brothers who served on the Western Front during the first world war. Henry and Edward were killed in action, and

The 28th annual Lifeguard Longboard Nationals is set to be held at Mangawhai Heads on Saturday, April 24, with registrations closing on Friday, April 16.
Dargaville’s first-ever river festival will take place in just over a week’s time, with a day of festivities planned for April 17 along the waterfront.
“The longboarding surfing contest is hosted by Mangawhai Heads Volunteer Lifeguard Service and has been running since 1992,” says organiser Tony Baker. “Last year was the first year it has not run in its history, due to Covid. From 11am, the area surrounding the Northern Wairoa Boating Club will be filled with market day stalls and street food vendors, music and opportunities to explore the history and importance of the Northern Wairoa River. It’s just on 150 years ago when Joseph Dargaville first sailed up through the Kaipara Harbour to visit the area where Sir John Logan Campbell was already established as a kauri gum trader and the boat builders and timber millers of Aratapu and Te Kopuru were turning timber to gold. From his day to the present, the Northern Wairoa has been an important part of Dargaville life. Therefore, it’s appropriate that the river festival incorporates cultural and historical aspects celebrating the people who, in successive waves of emigration and exploration, settled here by its shores. River fest organisers invite everyone to come and celebrate that rich history, with the music and many of the flavours of those varied cultures on display. Children and adults alike are encouraged to wear maritime and vintage-themed costumes as

WINTER CHECKLIST Checklist for a warm safe winter With autumn well and truly here, it’s time to think about making the home or farm ready for winter. Here’s a handy checklist, compiled with the help of local tradespeople, insurance professionals and other advisers, who have singled out the top 10 things to manage now to prevent disaster in the cold months. Be like Santa; make a list, check it twice, and your winter will be hot chocolate in front of the fire rather than cold drips and sleepless nights. 1. Trees and shrubs. Right now, they’re picturesque, but your undergrowth and overgrowth can turn nasty when whipped up by the strong winds of winter. Take care of any problem trees now, and get a second bonus free firewood. You’ll need a garden maintenance company or arborist or a visit to your local mower and chainsaw specialist to tune up those saws and pruners and invest in safety gear. 2. Leaks and Drips. You may know exactly where they will appear. You said you’d fix them during the summer. Now the rain is coming, and those leaks and drips will be back. Call in a qualified roofer, or for more serious and structural weather tightness issues, a licensed building practitioner to get to the root of the problem. 3. Windows. Here’s where a lot of the warmth is lost from some homes — windows with cracked glass or ill-fitting frames. Moreover, it’s not just obvious conduits for cold and damp. Check the putty around your window panes. Loose or crumbling fitment will not stand up to a gale. Call in a professional glazier to see you right. 4. Floors. It’s not just about insulation underneath. It’s about a flooring surface for various rooms and applications, which resists mould, is anti-allergenic and helps keen warmth where you need it for cosy feet. Talk to a flooring pro now for installation of modern wetarea vinyl or wood or the luxury of wool before winter. 5. Fire power. Did you know that you must sweep your chimney on a regular basis to satisfy the conditions of most
insurance policies for the home? It’s also a chance to check the state of the firebox and fittings. If you do need a new fire, now is the time to act. It can take a short period to get permissions from the authorities, and of course, time to install. While dwelling on fireplaces, now is also the time to lay in a big store of firewood. You’ll need a qualified fireplace installer and chimney sweep for part one and your local firewood delivery service for the second. 6. Gutters and water. It seems like a no-brainer, but you would be surprised at the number of people who do not clean out their gutters in anticipation of torrential winter rains. That can lead to everything from water overflowing to leak into the ceiling through to the whole gutter ripping off the house. Also, any nasties in the guttering and pipes may end up in your tank. Give them a clean and take a look at your tank filters, too — they may need a chance. A handyman can help with the guttering, but if it needs replacing or you need better filtration to keep your drinking water safe, call a qualified plumber. 7. Insurance. This one is simple. It’s the end of the financial year; it’s nearly winter, it’s the time of year when nature can dish out disasters. So make sure to update your insurance. Talk about ways in which you can achieve the best coverage for the most reasonable price and what will happen should disaster strike. Your local insurance professionals will make it a streamlined process, and you will enjoy peace of mind for having it all sorted. 8. Insulation. At the top of many
landlords’ minds right now but worth a look for all the rest of us. In the first instance, pop your head up into the access hole in your ceiling and check the status of your insulation. Has it settled or shifted? Are there gaps? Call in an insulation specialist to fill the ceiling, then look at your underfloor and inside the walls as well. A fully insulated home is one, which is easier to heat and, should you sell, this fact adds to your home’s value immensely. 9. Security. Longer nights and darker mornings mean it’s a good time to review your home and farm security as well. Check to see that sensor lights are working, give the sensors a clean,
and do the same for static cameras. Remember that new technology is well and truly here to upgrade old systems with things like remote accessed cameras and laser tripwires to alert you to unexpected visitors. Call your local electricians, who are adept at installing security measures for the home or farm. 10. The garage. Not just the building — but what’s in it. It’s OK to be safe as houses at home, but autumn is also a time to get your car, ute and quad bike serviced to tackle the cold and wet roads of winter. Be safe and get an oil change, battery test, wiper blade replacement and a tyre check before it’s too late. ¢

Fun factor for the future u by Andy Bryenton
Hybrid technology is here to stay, whether you subscribe to the government’s ambitious plan to switch all internal combustion to electricity by mid-century or not. Can it ever be as much fun as running on pure explosions? There are plenty of frugal hybrid cars out there, but people don’t really buy a vehicle based solely on fuel economy. Certainly, it’s a huge perk, but it can’t provide the thrill, which, deep down, we know is the real motivator behind handing over five or six figures for a set of keys. We know hybrid cars can be sporty and fun; the LaFerrari, McLaren P1 and Lamborghini Sian all prove it. However, for those of us looking to spend considerably less than the cost of a private island, hybrid offerings have come in two basic forms. Very economical and slower than a wet weekend or so big that the hybrid system is balanced out by weight and power, like Lexus’ tip of the hat to hybrids not paying inner-city congestion charges, the LS 600h. Don’t make any mistake, I’d take the V8 beast with its vestigial electric pacemaker any day, but it’s not going to do you any favours at the pump. The hybrid supermini would seem to be a no brainer. Nippy acceleration from instant electric torque to balance the shoebox dimensions of a hot hatch’s engine and its thimble-sized turbo. However, it’s a recipe that’s yet to be fully baked. What we do have, when it
p Honda Jazz hybrid represents fun as well as frugal petrol economy, part of a new era of hybrid super minis
comes to fun with electricity and petrol, is a trio of little machines that turn a fuel miser’s mathematical snore-fest into laugh-out loud glee. The first is Honda’s Jazz hybrid, which is not the quickest of the trio. It makes up for it with a quality build and so much interior space that the engineers seem to have exploited loopholes in quantum physics. A consummate city car, you’ll forget petrol stations exist thanks to
its frugal mileage but enjoy zipping through traffic with a suite of gadgets and enormous room at your disposal. Second is an unlikely contender, the Renault Clio E-Tech. It’s a piece of jewellery with wheels, this. Beautiful to look at and with a very French cheekiness about it too. With three motors and a computer brain to manage them, it has more punch and zing than the other top two but comes with a

European price tag. Toyota has beaten themselves three times over to win this tussle, however. The new Yaris hybrid is faster and cooler than a Prius, more nimble than a Corolla hybrid and the real successor to sister firm Lexus’ C series hatch. So far as power goes, it won’t stack up the real Yaris hot hatch in the pack, but it shares with the GR model a sense of fun that makes it a bit special. ¢

Electric switch made easier u by Andy Bryenton

p UBCO’s tough little two-wheel-drive farm bike is already a hit; now it’s set to go mainstream
It’s not just farmers who will benefit from the full implementation of this rollout, made possible by an investment from New Zealand Green Investment Finance Ltd (NZGIF — also known as the ‘Green Fund’), a crown-owned company established to accelerate low emissions investment in New Zealand. Households and businesses outside the rural sector are also targeted to switch from fossil fuel to electric power, with UBCO’s already tried-and-tested bikes replacing cars and utes for short commutes. However, even this first stage of the subscription model would fast-track UBCO CEO Timothy Allan’s vision to have an UBCO electric utility vehicle on every farm in New Zealand, which represents a $1.4 billion a year opportunity for the global company. “After introducing the subscription model to the urban environment with our partnership with Domino’s (pizza), it made sense to extend this to the agricultural sector, which is where our business was built,” said Allan.
“With the backing of a finance partner that is dedicated to the transition away from carbon fuels, the offer makes sense for farms’ cash flow and planning.” Instead of buying an EV outright, UBCO’s subscription model means businesses and consumers can pay a fixed monthly fee covering the bike, battery and servicing. UBCO retains ownership and stewardship of the product. Almost 50 per cent of UBCO sales historically have been from the agricultural sector. The latest data shows there are approximately 51,000 farm holdings in New Zealand. There are 175,000 registered motorbikes in New Zealand, with the farm bike count estimated at double that. Based on New Zealand’s energy profile, the UBCO 2X2 has 80 per cent less CO2 emissions than petrol vehicles and removes all particulate emissions during use. More importantly, the two-wheel-drive machines have already proven their worth on farms, having been available for several years now. ¢
