The evening aimed to welcome new business owners into the community and create a support system between the new and existing ones. “We had about 15–20 people turn up with a lot of newcomers that have

moved here in the last 6–12 months,” said forum member Sharon George. “Some great connections were made and existing businesses offered to help some of the newer ones. The whole vibe was very positive.”

Mrs George has been encouraged to hold regular meetings and said: “There are definitely more businesses starting up than there have been in the past and new people managing or being a part of businesses. continued on page 3 …

u by Ann Morgan

Primary school students from four school’s in the Dargaville area participated in a football festival held at Dargaville High School.

Te Kopuru born Jack Cuthbert has been plumbing in Dargaville for 50 years and the time has come to hand on the business and retire.

p Students practised their skills at the Dargaville Primary Schools Football Festival

The emphasis was on fun, with Sport Northland Lower North community sport advisor Joey Yovich saying, “The aim is to keep the kids active in schools. “It went really well and we had nearly 100 children participating. It was a beautiful day and great to have the teachers and parents as well as Silver Fern Farms ongoing support.” Twelve teams represented Dargaville Primary. The school also brought along eight student umpires. Tangiteroria School had five teams, Tangowahine two and Arapohue had one team.

The drive to encourage children to be involved with football coincides with this years FIFA U-20 World Cup held in New Zealand from May 30–June 20. Tickets to World Cup games can be purchased through The Northern Wairoa Football Club. The Northern Wairoa Football Club will be holding a junior registration day on April 18 between 10am and 2pm and on April 25 from 2pm until 4pm at Memorial Park, Dargaville. Players must be aged five years and up. ¢

Welcoming new businesses “A lot of change is happening, especially with Winston Peters being elected. It feels like a good time.” Amongst the many topics discussed at the meeting was an event finder website, with NorthSouth Multi Media national sales manager John Pickworth noting there are a lot of events in Dargaville that no one gets to hear about.

“Some venues suggested they have the capability to cater for more people than those that turn up and we have had discussions about council run notice boards at either end of the town to promote the events,” he said. “There is a buzz about the main street with a lot of good businesses and people are attracted to Dargaville because of this.” ¢

p Jack and Karel Cuthbert have handed on their business to Jamie Poole and would like to thank all their loyal customers over the past 50 years of Jack’s plumbing career

“I started plumbing when my uncle came to town when I was young and told me about a job,” says Jack. “I didn’t even know what plumbing was but I knew a bit of maths and English so I enquired and they gave me an apprenticeship.” “It has been a pleasure working with our clients, they have been really good and supportive to us. The locals are great to deal with and we enjoy maintaining contact with the old and new members of the club,” says Carters manager Mark Kapa. “Our annual Carters Sponsors Tournament is on Friday, April 17 involving 18 teams combined of builders and suppliers and we are looking forward to catching up with the players on the day.” ¢

The church will make up part of the historic village near the museum. “It travelled up the road without too much hassel,” said Friends of Mangawhai Park chairman Jim Wintle. A few local volunteers have been helping tidy up the building since its arrival. “The church has been set down on piles and we still have some fixing and renovations to do as well as looking at the total layout of the place. “We will be working on mulching some trees and making more space on the land.

Basketball comeback at local high school u by Joanne Speechly

Basketball is enjoying a revival at Dargaville High School after a gap of almost two decades. Two former DHS students were keen to see a resurgence of the sport and have stepped into coaching roles for the two teams. The school’s sports department has fully supported the move and has secured full sponsorship. This has seen both teams, Year 9 to 13 girls and Year 9 to 13 boys, each receive a new uniform at their first pre-season game. The Whangarei Secondary School Competition, in which the two teams will compete each Friday night, begins in the first week of Term Two. “The teams have been training twice a week for eight weeks and are showing real promise,” says organiser Simone Matthews, whose daughter Taylor is playing basketball for the first time this year. “They will continue to train throughout the holidays in preparation for their first game on April 24. Both teams have competed very well in their preseason games.”

p DHS’s new basketball teams are gearing up for the start of the Whangarei Secondary School Competition

Jamie Manson is coaching the girls team and David Pirini is coaching the boys team. “It has been their vision for some time to see a revival of basketball at

the school and both played at a fairly high level themselves. They’ve remained active in a number of sporting codes, so it is fitting that they will coach the two teams.” ¢

Ambulance and ASB staff are teaming up to raise funds during the St John annual appeal week which runs from April 6 until April 12 and will be holding a cake stall and sausage sizzle from 10am outside the Dargaville ASB branch. “People will have the chance to practise CPR on a mannequin with a heart monitor. The monitor gauges who conducts the best CPR and the winner will receive an official St John first aid kit,” says retired paramedic and area committee secretary Elaine McCracken. “We will also be selling raffle tickets for another first aid kit which has been put together by ambulance officers.” Ambulance staff will be on hand to check blood pressure

Northpower has long recognised the importance of Northland’s Electricity Rescue Helicopter service. That’s why, since 1988, Northpower has sponsored this life-saving service. We provide $100,000 each year to contribute to operational costs because we recognise that an ongoing long-term relationship is critical for Northland Emergency Services Trust (NEST). Infrastructure of this kind aligns well with what we do – it is primarily for the benefit of Northlanders but also visitors to the region. NEST Chairman Paul Ahlers says the charity’s operational expenditure is $5M a year and climbing as demand for the service grows. Every dollar received goes towards running the operation. “Because we are a charitable trust, that is why every year during our annual fundraising appeal we have to be so vocal about the need for donations to keep saving lives,” says Mr Ahlers. He says without security of funding, NEST’s future would be in jeopardy. And that’s why NEST relies so heavily on local sponsorship and community donations. 2014 was the busiest year on record for Northland’s Electricity Rescue Helicopters and a glance at the NEST facebook page shows just how much this service means to everyday New Zealanders. The crews flew 735 missions in 2014 and transported 800 people to hospitals or medical facilities around the north and other parts of the North Island. On average, the helicopters are now in the air twice a day, saving or making a huge difference to the lives of everyone they carry. Most people in Northland have a loved one or someone they care about, that have been flown by NEST. In fact, during the recent December and January period, NEST had its busiest months on record – due largely to the influx of holiday makers through this time – stretching it to capacity. And year on year, demands on the service grow as our local and tourist population increases. Yet the service, the paramedics and associated emergency services and community volunteers step up to help others. NEST has provided services to Northland for over 26 years and has carried over 17,000 patients. It is estimated that well over 2,000 lives have been saved since the inception of NEST in 1988. The service has grown from a part time single engine machine crewed by volunteers, into a full time operation with several aircraft and highly skilled staff.

Fresh Vibe cafe will be relocating to their new premises at 118A Victoria Street, opening on April 15 after 12 years in McKays Arcade. The cafe is owned by Byant Singh and managed by Ashish Rav and his wife Payal Kumar. Originally from Fiji, Ashish and Payal decided to move to New Zealand to look for work and study. “Life was hard in Fiji and it was difficult to find work. My wife became a chef and once she graduated we started looking for a business. “Friends were running Fresh Vibe but they wanted to return to Auckland so my father-in-law bought this cafe and we moved here.”

Over the years the cafe has kept regular customers and Ashish says there isn’t enough space during the busy hours. “We talked about it with my father-inlaw and decided to do something new. We discussed it with our customers and they agreed. “The new premises are perfect and the location is just the icing on the cake. “I was invited to come to the Business Forum’s welcoming drinks and I was surprised at how helpful everyone was. We love it here and would like to see the town grow. We want to get involved with the community because we are here to stay.” ¢

FULLY QUALIFIED Getting the best for the job TILER There is little excuse in this technological age for anyone to employ a cowboy tradesman. Apart from anything else, the Internet is a quick and easy way to make sure you are hiring a fully qualified tradesman, be it a plumber, electrician, builder, glazier, or someone from another trade sector. While the need to get things done quickly means there are tales of unqualified people taking advantage of busy households, there are plenty of checks you can make. Industry qualifications are a government requirement. You can also get recommendations from friends or family. The best way by far to choose a reliable plumber, electrician or builder is by word of mouth. Ask family, neighbours, colleagues or nearby friends for referrals. It’s also worth asking industry contacts. If you’ve had a good experience with another professional, such as a roofer or an electrician, try asking them for a recommendation. Closing your eyes and stabbing a finger in local business directories to find a firm is not recommended. But there are a number of different web sites that
