Lieutenant Exley, 21, a Royal New Zealand Artillery Officer from the Linton-based 16 Field Regiment, is living her childhood dream of working outdoors as a gunner on an exchange in Hawaii. Ms Exley is with 11 other Kiwis in Hawaii with the 3/7 Field Artillery Battalion, 25th Infantry Division, US Army.

The exchange has seen the Kiwis training with US Army personnel and with the same M119 105mm howitzer guns used in New Zealand. Ms Exley said the experience has been worthwhile. “It’s been really good to see the way the same unit from another country works. We have the same equipment, but they operate differently. This not only

gives us the chance to learn, but also to teach.” Her mother, Karen, says Demi joined the army in 2010, straight out of Dargaville High School. “She loves it. The army is a great career for her. Demi enjoys the outdoors and the camaraderie and she never wanted a desk job. It has been an amazing experience for her.” ¢

An intriguing Kiwi film about Jacob, a dispirited underachiever who is replaced by a charismatic actor in real life. With someone else filling in for him at work and at home, Jacob watches as the new ‘Jake’ turns his fortunes around. But what happens when he wants his life back?

Anna, a young novitiate nun in 1960s Poland, is on the verge of taking her vows when she discovers a dark family secret dating back to the years of the Nazi occupation.

A rag-tag band of interstellar thieves and assassins must save the galaxy from the clutches of an evil warlord. With cutting edge FX and cutting sarcasm, this is a comical rollercoaster ride of action which will appeal to fans of fellow Marvel flick ‘The Avengers’

The Dark Horse The true story of Genesis Potini, a Kiwi chess genius who was institutionalised with severe bipolar disorder. Upon being released, he goes to live with his patched-gang-member brother, and decides to teach the youth of Gisborne the game of chess in a bid for the national champs.

Good Vibrations Terri Hooley doesn’t simply barricade the doors when the Troubles plunge Belfast into terror and strife. Instead he opens a record store on the most bombed street in the city, calling it Good vibrations. Through the underground punk rock scene he becomes instrumental as a voice against the carnage.

As Paparoa has no uniform, the school decided on a pyjama day instead.

Former local behind Glasgow games action

3

u by Colin Patterson

When our Commonwealth Games athletes were going for gold in wrestling and judo, one of the key people ensuring the events ran successfully was from Dargaville. Erin McEvoy was assistant manager of the judo and wrestling events at the Glasgow Games. But when she applied for the job, Erin had one big handicap. “I knew absolutely nothing about either sport.” But she was experienced in event management, having worked for the Northland Rugby Union for seven years, including running match days at Toll Stadium and coordinating teams of volunteers. It was that experience that impressed Games organisers. “I was told I just needed to know the basics of the sports. I was there for my experience in events management. Erin got sent to Bulgaria to see how a wrestling competition is run. She then got to observe the British Open Judo Championship in London.

Back in Glasgow, Erin was in charge of backof-house operations for the judo and wrestling competitions that ran for three days each. “I ran the competitors’ lounge, and the weigh-in and warm-up areas.” She also recruited and trained 98 volunteers for the competitions. “They were amazing. “No one whinged and no one moaned. They had to clean up the mats after each day’s competition. The mats were sweaty and yucky and there was a bit of blood. “Being in Glasgow was just an amazing experience. I was just blown away with how well it went. It was a sell out for both sports.” Now the Games are over, Erin’s priority is for a well deserved holiday — a 10-day sailing trip

Jill McPherson will become Kaipara District Council’s acting chief executive when Steve Ruru leaves in October. Mr Ruru is leaving to become chief executive at the Southland District Council. This is a matter still before the Local Government Commission, which has delayed announcing its final decision until after the September 20 general election. That decision could then be subject to poll challenges, meaning a final outcome might not be known until next year. “We have decided not to begin a recruitment process until this reorganisation question is finally decided,” says Mr Robertson. “It makes no sense to try to recruit for this important position when there

Toastmasters comes to Dargaville u by Colin Patterson

If you dread speaking in public but need to learn the skill, help is at hand. A Toastmasters club is about to start in Dargaville. Graeme Kettle, who is helping to set up the club, says there are currently 262 Toastmasters clubs in New Zealand. “We’ve got people who have approached us. But the nearest clubs are Whangarei or Hokianga. So we’re giving it a try in Dargaville.” Toastmasters come from a wide variety of backgrounds and occupations. “It’s for absolutely anyone from 18 to 108. We’ve got people who come for work reasons. We’ve got people who write and have to read their work aloud. There are people who want to gain confidence.” The Dargaville Toastmasters will meet for the first time at 7pm on Thursday August 21 at the Commercial Hotel. The club will meet twice a month thereafter. “Every time people will get speaking opportunities — but only if they feel comfortable.” Toastmasters also run regional and national competitions for those who

The band is on a tour of Northland and on Thursday night will be performing in Dargaville. Warrant officer Shaun Jarrett says the band will also be performing in Kaitaia, Kerikeri, and Whangarei. There are also a number of school concerts. “We do them to promote the navy.” The band has 30 members playing brass and woodwind instruments. Its repertoire includes concert pieces, big band (including Glen Miller) and jazz, plus military standards. The band will be accompanied by vocalist Rebecca

Nelson and will be led by its director of music Lieutenant Commander Owen Clarke. Mr Jarrett says a number of band members recently took part in a new recording of the Commonwealth Games team theme song For Today, originally a hit for the Netherworld Dancing Toys in the early 1980s. The Royal New Zealand Band is one of three military bands in New Zealand and is responsible for providing all of the navy’s ceremonial music. Its Dargaville concert kicks off at 7pm. ¢

Thanks Northland! A sincere thanks to the people of Kaipara and Whangarei for their immense support during the recent storm. The way you worked with our lines crews and call centre during lingering power outages is greatly appreciated. This was a major storm and while it could have been a lot worse, the work our vegetation crews have done in the field in recent years, reduced potential outages greatly. At the peak of the storm we had 14,000 customers without power … some for days. Most outages were repaired within 24 hours but at times those same power supplies were lost again. Flooding and slips created access issues, so we did a lot of repair work with helicopters and aboard jet-ski. Nevertheless, had our rural community (farmers and lifestyle block owners) not been so willing to work with us on clearing trees from lines in recent years, the situation would have been worse. But we can’t afford to relax. We have to keep on top of our tree trimming/felling programme and aim to be even better prepared for future storms. To Northpower’s field staff and everyone in our offices who pitched in and helped out – thank you also. Likewise, all those Northpower crews who travelled from our depots throughout the North Island to help out – your support was invaluable. So many Northpower staff went the extra mile and showed an awesome team spirit.

In storm events, media support is critical to inform the community of just what is going on where.

Changing of the guard u by Joanne Speechly

Dargaville’s new Rotary Club president, Brian Burnett, is hoping to build on the club’s past successes during his time in office. “The community has benefited hugely from Rotary projects over the years and I want to maintain and build on our profile as a successful club with 76 years of community service,” says Brian. “The strength of our youth programme is a good example of this, and we are presently hosting an international exchange student from Finland, Heidi Virtanen. “Our other youth initiatives include Rotary’s Australia New Zealand threemonth student exchange, RYDA youth driving academy, RYLA youth leadership programme and summer science school, from which we’ve had some major successes.” Brian says the club will continue to support Rotary’s major

international project, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. “‘We are nearly there’ is the term so often quoted and we are so close to eradicating polio from the world. We can’t let it go at this stage. I also have a target to increase our membership this year. We increased our numbers last year, so now I am personally inviting new members to come and join us.” Dargaville Rotary Club’s next major fundraising initiative is the distribution of telephone directories “we’ll be covering many hundreds of kilometres both on foot and in vehicles” — followed by the annual christmas raffle and the Field Days next year. The club meets weekly at the Lion’s centre. ¢

This week marks the 100th anniversary of World War One.

Big River FM has introduced a new Saturday morning lineup, featuring fresh talent and hits from the 60s through to the 90s.

Yet despite the immense changes this global conflict wrought in New Zealand’s national psyche, very few people actually know the details of their own ancestors’ service record in the ‘war to end all wars’. The Northern Wairoa branch of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists is set to change this fact, though, with a day commemorating the role which Kaipara locals played in the First World War. On the 16th of August they invite the people of Dargaville to come and investigate the past with them, at a special ‘Soldiers’

Craig has a great deal of broadcasting experience, both on air and behind the scenes, and previously worked for one of New Zealand’s few independent radio companies, Radio Bay of Plenty Limited. “We were looking ahead in terms of our strategy and planning and Saturday morning was identified as an area of the week that could be revamped,”

said station manager Anaru Tana. “The idea was to extend our peak time from the five-day commercial week, into the weekend and it’s already paying dividends for us. At the end of the day, it’s all about the long-term financial viability of the station. “Solid Gold Hits Saturday Mornings offers consistency in presentation and an all-round package.” Music from the 1960s through to the 90s will be interspersed with classic rock cuts, one hit wonders, news, sport and current affairs and local notices. “In radio, your prime time is the mornings and we needed to extend Big River FM’s appeal. The Te Kopuru 12-year-old is fulfilling his adventurous spirit in Operation Hero, a 10-part series that screens every Saturday morning on TV2. Nico and five other youngsters from around the country participate in a series of challenges based around the exploits of real-life heroes whose deeds have saved lives. Nico was one of 200 teens from around the country who auditioned for the programme. “I had to make a video all about myself.” He says his background growing up on his parent’s farm made him an ideal candidate. “I love physical and mental challenges. I get the cows, ride motorbikes and feed the horses.” The series was filmed in March. Nico spent three weeks in Auckland, Palmerston north and Waiouru. “I got to meet cool, neat people and do amazing challenges.” In one of the latest programmes Nico and his team mates

were put in a navy inflatable rescue boat where they had to use GPS to find their way to a beach. On the beach were three dummies weighing 30kg, 20kg and 10kg respectively. They had to drag them along the beach and then up a steep hill. That was followed by another challenge that involved carrying a 50kg stretcher and finding clues at the end of a flying fox, at the top of a vertical wall and after crawling under metres of barbed wire. Nico says although the challenges were tough, they were achievable. “I felt good with everything I did. It wasn’t too challenging.” He enjoys watching himself on TV. “It’s pretty cool. My friends say it’s really good and the things I do are amazing.” Nico is in his last year at Te Kopuru School. Next year he will be going to Dargaville High School. “I’d like to pursue a career in acting and TV.” ¢

WARM UP WINTER with HOT NEW Movies! OF AMAZING SPIDERMAN 2: RISE ELECTRO

NOAH DIVERGENT

The lounge or living room is the heart of the home in this regard — the place where the family can relax, and enjoy the deliciously civilised pleasures of warmth, entertainment and comfort while an icy gale blows outside. First and foremost, in the cold months a good living space needs heat. Two systems stand out from the rest — if you have a plentiful supply of firewood at hand, you can’t go past the traditional

appeal of a wood fire with its welcoming crackle of flames. Modern fires can also run on pellets or gas, obviating the need for all that stacking and chopping, if you are so inclined. Heat pumps are also a great choice, especially for homes which also require gentle cooling in the summer. Each year these modern marvels get smaller and smaller, while producing more and more warmth from less power!

Next, trap that warmth where it’s needed. Insulation plays a big part here, but so, too does what’s beneath your feet. Trends come and go, but pure wool carpet is an evergreen favourite — somehow nothing seems as luxurious and cozy. High on the list, along with a pleasant warm room, is some designer decor to fill it! Whether you like the elegant look of faux-antique regency chaise lounges or the embrace of a soft recliner, picking the right furniture and furnishings is the way to put your mark on the space in your home, transforming it into a place that’s personal as well as comfortable. What lounge would be complete without entertainment? Increasingly,

the living area is the place where we play games, watch news and movies, and kick back to relax. The style of the times is for full HD, integrated home cinema, with a big flatscreen attached to some unobtrusive speakers and the obligatory games system. The latest movies are always available in crystalclear blu-ray quality from your local movie library, while a world of sports, news and entertainment is now at the public’s command via Freeview and other satellite services. Let your local professionals turn your home into a warm and entertaining ‘nest’ this winter, and enjoy being cocooned away from the elements in a fashion our cave-dwelling ancestors could only have dreamed of! ¢

Fourth generation of a favourite

u by Andy Bryenton

When Toyota announced a ‘junior’ addition to their popular Land Cruiser-dominated 4x4 family in 1995, it was no surprise that it became an instant hit. The RAV4 offered maximum thrills for a very tidy price, packing it all into a neat little design that is instantly recognisable all over New Zealand today. So the fourth generation RAV4 has big boots to fill. Figuratively of course — because it is larger than the 1995 iteration in all the ways that count. More powerful, more roomy, and thanks to some tech wizardry, incredibly economical for a vehicle this size. The whole family can be packed up and whisked away to the beach or the snow in comfort, while a modern 2.5 petrol inline 4 or a 2.2 diesel does the hard work. But that’s not the surprising thing about the RAV4’s fourth generation. We were already confident that Toyota (who have been on a roll recently, with

the FJ Cruiser and the 86) would produce a thoroughly practical machine for the adventurous Kiwi family. What came as a nice surprise was just how this 2130 kilogram vehicle handles. That’s no lightweight. But to give you some idea of how the new RAV4 feels in the corners, I had arrived at the dealership in a much earlier Toyota — the 1987 MR2-S. This thing has a chassis designed by Lotus and weighs less than a paper bag. But the big, full-featured RAV holds its own in the corners just like the little

sports car. Along a winding road, in light rain, uphill, the RAV4 felt comfortable in the corners at twice the suggested turn-in speed. And that’s not in any way pushing its capabilities. Just a cruise in the country.

New Jazz hits a high note u by Andy Bryenton

The opening shots may have already been heard in the battle for frugal, fun motoring, but the latest vehicle to join the fray has upped the ante yet again. Honda’s new Jazz RS boasts a tiny 5.4 litres per 100k’s, but a mixture of clever layout and ultramodern engine technology give it more zest than one would expect from a 1.5 four door family hatch. The first thing you notice (aside from the bold, EuroCivic-like styling of the new Jazz and its range of vivid paint choices) is the silence, however. The Jazz glides about town with no discernible sound of gear changes, no fuss from under the hood — in fact, it sometimes takes a look at the dash to register just how fast you’re going. It’s also quiet enough that the engine shutdown feature (which stops the motor when you’re at the lights, for example) seems nicely unobtrusive. But what was most impressive to note was the sheer level of space afforded by this little car. In the Honda dealership stands a stack of nine hefty coloured

boxes, perhaps the size of two large appliances. Every last one of them fits into the car without contorting the driver into a pretzel. Honda call it the magic seat system, and it really does feel like sorcery. Better yet, this is no dull people carrier, getting by on economy and roominess. The Jazz feels balanced and willing, more than making up for the lack

of a thumping V8 both at the pump and in the corners. In the wet, up a snaky hill, this new Honda chopped down and overtook with ease, feeling well sorted. Well worth a test drive, and sure to put a smile on your face! ¢

Yearly hunt a community affair

New cafe gallery for Wellsford

u by Andy Bryenton

u by Joanne Speechly

Delicious roast pork is on the menu this month as keen hunters head for the hills, taking part in the Aratapu Tavern’s 8th annual wild boar hunt.

The new name in dining, DONNA, has a strong focus on keeping things local. The Rodney Street, Wellsford, cafe gallery features a menu brimming with produce from nearby gardens, farms and kitchens and a dedicated space has been set aside to display local art works and clothing by local designers. The recently renovated 1950s building has a home away from home charm, with its timber floors, whitewashed walls and retro furniture. Kiwi classics, with a healthy twist, grace the menu and alongside the cooked breakfasts, burgers and mussel chowder, patrons will find a tempting range of fresh salads and sandwiches, with both dine-in

and takeaway options. Whangaripo Buffalo meat and cheeses, handmade Salumeria Fontana sausages, Windfall Farm preserves, Bonjour Patisserie pastries and Matakana Coffee Roasters Fairtrade organic coffee are some of the local items on the menu, as well as locally grown fruit and vegetables. The shelves are also stocked with product for sale. The cafe is open on Friday evenings and will feature guest chefs, each creating a threecourse set menu inspired by their individual backgrounds. ¢

It’s a fitting event for the Kaipara tavern, who have thrown themselves wholeheartedly into the recent Monteith’s Wild Food Challenge, and who have hosted a similar hunt for nearly a decade. This year it’s all happening on the 29th–31st of August. The action kicks off well before the hunters head out in search of their quarry. On Saturday the 30th the Aratapu will host the Liverpool Street Band, providing tuneful accompaniment to a night of prize giveaways and (of course) sizzling pork ribs hot off the grill. A full set of new Bridgestone 4x4 tyres is just one of the many prizes on offer. On the big day itself the top boarhunter will go home with 2014’s bragging rights, as well as a tidy winner’s purse. Kids are invited to get in the spirit of things by fishing up the heaviest eels, with prizes up for grabs.
