Sand mining ‘threatens Mangawhai’ u by Paul Campbell

p With an entertainment career stretching back to 1970, Jock Hume is more often recognised by his country and western music persona the Singing Cowboy. Last week he stopped off in Dargaville to share stories and songs with the public, and with the local country music club. Now 72 years of age, the Singing Cowboy still travels the country, with his guitar in hand, though no longer (as in those early years) on horseback. He has appeared on telethons next to the full list of Kiwi celebrities, been the entertainment mascot for well-remembered brand Georgie Pie, attended A&P shows in nearly every province. He may even be the hitchhiker with the most miles under his belt on New Zealand roads. He’s also won an Unsung Heroes Award from the Variety Club for his years of work for children’s charitable causes.

Government aids Kaipara clean-up u by Paul Campbell
Kaipara Harbour protection groups are to get a financial shot in the arm with an unspecified share of the government’s allocation of $12 million as a first grant to clean up the country’s waterways.
p The government will be investing $12m to help improve catchments with a share going to Kaipara
The Budget this year allocated a total of $229 million nationally to improve the nation’s water resources with the first allocation of funding made last Sunday. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said: “To support this the government will be investing $12m to help improve catchments, with a share going to Kaipara, the largest estuary in New Zealand, showing how it will be done — a unified effort led by the community, with government support. Estuaries like the Kaipara are clogged with sediment and mangroves.” Actions will include solutions already ongoing in Kaipara such as: •• Riparian planting, and wetland preservation and development •• Fencing streams to prevent livestock
trampling at waterway margins •• Using the best science to locate sediment hotspots and measure sediment flows “The direction of travel is clear: we need to reduce the pollution nitrogen, sediment, E coli and other contaminants from flowing through our cities and farms and into our waterways,” Jacinda Ardern said. Environment Minister David Parker said the government was working with the community to help understand what can make the greatest difference and then what interventions to take, such as where to build and restore wetlands, or where more hillside planting is required to stabilise steep land, as part of its nationwide programme. ¢

Future leaders take flight u by Andy Bryenton
Dargaville’s Air Training Corps has been teaching more than just the basics of flight for decades, part of the 78-year legacy of the cadet corps in New Zealand, now they’re seeking new members, with an open evening on August 26.
p Air Training Corps cadets learn more than just aviation; the long-established group is all about building self-confidence and having fun
Unit Commander Gordon Gilligan explains that although the corps was established at the height of the second world war, with the Battle of Britain recently won and our nation’s air defences in need of up and coming pilots, the modern ATC is not all about pursuing a career in the air force. While that’s an option, the skills taught here, such as wilderness and bushcraft, confidence, teamwork, problem-solving and of course, the practice and theory of flight transfer to valuable skills in all walks of life.
“We really concentrate on aspects like leadership,” he says. “Everyone gets a chance at leading, solving problems and learning that they can work together to achieve a goal.” The open evening will invite new members to join in the fun and camaraderie experienced by the existing members of 57 Squadron. Anyone between the ages of 12 and 20 can join, and take part in a safe, educational and character-building group with a proud history and a lot to offer. ¢

Three legs, four wheels and a vision u by Andy Bryenton
From Austria to Dargaville Dargaville High School’s newest student has arrived for class this week, all the way from the town of Irdning Donnersbachtal in Austria.
The newest exhibition to open at Dargaville’s Muddy Waters Gallery is titled Four Legs and Two Wheels, a reference not to the subject matter, but to the fact that one of a group of three talented artists on display paints from his wheelchair. All three have a unique vision displayed across multiple media at the exhibition, which opened on Friday, August 2. Photographer and traditional flax weaver Miriam Guthrie presents a collection of evocative images captured from the local area, reflecting her love of the outdoors and our natural environment. With a 20 year career behind the lens both here and abroad, Miriam’s photographs make clever use of light in all its forms to tell a story. Student exchange programme coordinator Neil Clements, who has helped host new arrivals (and place Dargaville youngsters overseas with foreign families) since 1995, is very positive about the ongoing exchange programme, and the way it fosters international fellowship. The town of Irdning, situated in the alpine region of central Austria, has a similar population to Dargaville but is worlds apart in terms of language, traditions, history and industry. DHS students are doing all they can to make their new international guest feel right at home. ¢

Clara Liebmann chose New Zealand, and specifically Dargaville, as her ‘home away from home’ for a one-year student exchange programme, and now that she is here, the young international traveller is impressed with the warm welcome she has received. “It’s really nice here; the people, especially, are very kind,” said Clara, attending a welcome luncheon hosted by the Dargaville Rotary Club. Part of the exchange student’s mission, fully immersed in Kiwi culture, is to master the intricacies of ‘New Zealand English’ while staying with four host families, three months at a time. Election nominations grow Project funding on offer u by Paul Campbell
As of Monday this week, six nominations had been received for the nine positions on the Kaipara District Council in the forthcoming local government elections, with the nominations deadline falling this Friday, August 16, sharp at noon. Kaipara District Council’s electoral officer, Jason Marris says “time is fast running out, and there is no extension of time. It’s noon, and that’s it.” Councillors Libby Jones in Otamatea Ward and Andrew Wade in Dargaville have decided not to contest their seats and those standing in the election five days out from the closure are listed on the KDC website at kaipara.govt. nz/council/local-elections. The Dargaville seat was still open at press time, although 13 interested individuals had attended a KDC briefing on electoral matters. Mr Marris said that with candidates confirmed and voting papers mailed out “the next step is for people to send in their votes.” p Jason Marris Kaipara District Council’s electoral officer All four of Northland councils are collectively keen to encourage out to electors from Friday, September people to run for office, and typically 20 and must be received by noon on many nominations are received in the election day, Saturday, October 12. closing days, or even hours, of an official The election results are expected to nomination period.Voting documents for be known later on that Saturday night or the local body election will be posted Sunday morning. ¢
There is $300,000 up for grabs in the Kaipara for people or organisations with a desire to improve the environment. Applications are open for the available funds until September 13, under a change to the Reserves Contributions (Use of) Policy as part of the Long Term Plan 2018/2028, which has resulted in Kaipara District Council having a contestable fund for public application. The fund is collected from reserve contributions and is available across Kaipara District to help groups create, improve and reprioritise how open spaces and reserves are used in their communities. Projects could include adding capacity or enhancing existing open spaces through landscaping,
equipment provision or developing walking tracks. All applicants must be a legal notfor-profit entity and have a volunteer component to the project. Council has established a tiered process for applications. • An expression of interest for small projects, under $2,000 • Those not exceeding $20,000 • Projects exceeding $20,000 will need to provide a business plan. All applications will be presented to a committee of council for approval. Enquiries to the funding coordinator, Jenny Rooney, at grants@kaipara. govt.nz.

Hope beyond financial stress Mentoring In the two months since Dargaville’s Whanau Focus Centre brought together under one roof various agencies and advocacies addressing the needs of the elderly, disadvantaged youth, families and other vulnerable members of the community, the overarching theme they have discovered is one of extreme financial duress.
p The team of the Whanau Focus Centre
“We are dealing with critical family situations, and overwhelmingly the cause for that situation is financial,” said the team, who cover portfolios as varied as positive parenting, abuse prevention and age concern. “It’s not just those who are single and unemployed. We assist those living on pensions, families, and low wage, low-hours workers who are in some cases worse off than those receiving government assistance.” A common factor addressed is the rising cost and increasing instability of rental tenancies. “After rent, we have some people come to us with only $30 or $40 left
to cover everything else. We have to explore all entitlements, including governmental assistance and help from charitable organisations, for many of our clients.” However, the message from these front lines is hopeful. With the combined experience and skills of the team who are now under one roof at the Whanau Focus Centre, families are being made aware of what they are entitled to, how to apportion their resources, and how to deal with and triumph over financial stress and its corrosive effect on relationships. Their services are free to the public, at their base in Victoria Street, Dargaville. ¢

Record season for library
Roadshow battles rubbish
The recent school holidays have proven popular with Dargaville Library patrons, who delivered the biggest numbers yet seen by the town’s centre for learning, reading and information.
u by Paul Campbell
p Young readers make use of the Dargaville Library’s Chromebook digital devices; a new facet of information sharing
Librarians report figures of more than 500 patrons a day using the full range of library services, at the only district library facility funded and staffed by Kaipara District Council. Such volumes of patronage have never before been recorded and were consistent for all of late July. Library manager Lisa Salter says that many factors were likely contributors to the busy two week period, chiefly the school holidays and inclement weather for outdoor pursuits, but also initiatives such as the implementation of 16 new Chrome operating system-based devices to expand the library’s online capacity. Strong interest among young people for reading is also a factor, with a recent
promotion to encourage engagement with books by pizza chain Hell receiving an enthusiastic response. Another factor in the popularity of the library may be the reimagining of the library as a more inclusive space. Gone is the image of the silent and strict book repository of yesteryear, say today’s library staff. Along with the satisfaction of reaching a record number of readers and patrons come challenges with delivering a good experience for all. The librarians agree that they have more information at their disposal than ever, and clever ways to access it, but demand, as the library enjoys a popularity surge, should not be allowed to outstrip supply of space and resources. ¢

New horizon for hospice u by Andy Bryenton
A new endeavour opened in Te Hana is delivering better care for hospice patients, thanks to the generosity of the local community.
p Julia Barnes and Natalie Perry at the opening of the new Hospice Shop in Te Hana already a popular stop-off for travellers
The Hospice Shop has only just opened its doors in the small town on State Highway One, but it’s already seen good patronage from travellers and locals alike. Affiliated with the Harbour Hospice, with three facilities caring for the palliative needs of patients north of Auckland, the bright pink facade has turned heads since the ribbon was cut on Thursday, August 1. Shop assistants Julia Barnes and Natalie Perry will be in-store weekly from Thursday through Sunday, both selling goods to benefit the good work of their
parent organisation and also receiving donations of good quality homeware, furniture, clothing and books. Along with the bargains, there’s a serious message to this (and other) hospice shops in our small communities. Harbour Hospice management says that health board funding covers some, but far from all of the costs of their vital service. A further six million dollars or more must be raised every year to keep the hospice going, helping families in their time of direst need, free of charge. ¢

Town goes yellow for cancer appeal After 29 years of supporting the annual Daffodil Day appeal for the New Zealand Cancer Society, the team at Dargaville’s ANZ Bank may have put together their biggest yellow-themed raffle ever — it’s all thanks to the generosity of the local community.
p The ANZ Dargaville team want to say thanks to everyone involved in their annual raffle for Daffodil Day; this year the biggest in its 29-year history
Thelma Bagnall, Kelly Ross, Stacey Beattie, Dania Wood, Steph Jefferey, Steph Row, Jess Bellamy and Erallee Campbell make up the Dargaville team, and they have been working hard to collate the number of prizes (from gift vouchers through to furniture and wheelbarrows), which have already been donated three weeks out from Daffodil day on August 29. The bank is also a grateful recipient of weekly deliveries of fresh-cut daffodils to brighten up the window display. “Our local businesses have
been so generous. There will be not just one draw, but several as we pick winners on the 29th, and there are all kinds of things you could win. It’s all for a good cause.” That’s the message from the management and staff here, who will also host a barbecue fundraiser on the day. Leading up to Daffodil Day, they encourage people to buy a $2 ticket in support of the cause, as all funds raised will go directly to the NZ Cancer Society. ¢

Mangawhai’s museum turns five years old next week, with a gala dinner celebrating this milestone for what has become an icon of the town, and a testament to its community spirit. With its distinctive stingray shaped roof evoking the spirit of the harbour and heads, the Mangawhai Museum has been called one of New Zealand’s best regional museums by the Lonely Planet Guide and has served as a hub around which further arts, history and culturebased endeavours have accreted since its inception. Initially the vision of the Mangawhai Historical Society back in 2000, collections began to be assembled in 2003. Specialist museum designer Chris Currie was part of the ‘brains trust’ who charted the course toward opening day, along with the designer of the unique stingray themed building, David Foster. A dedicated group of local volunteers set to the task with a will. The land was sourced from the Kaipara District Council and the build

began in 2009. Meanwhile, preparing the collection of artefacts and displays was an eight-year labour in itself. The finished product opened in 2014 with a cross-section of stories covering the history of Mangawhai, from pre-European times through to the present day.
Now, five years on, the museum is still primarily run by dedicated volunteers, many of whom have been on board since day one. A special fundraising auction dinner is planned for August 24, with numerous auction lots donated by the business community. ¢

Building on their reputation There’s been a very favourable impression formed of the LDV brand here in New Zealand in recent years, with their no-nonsense, hard-working cargo vans becoming popular for those trades, which require reliable mass transit. Then came the T60 ute, a serious contender for king of the low-price modern light commercials. Now the line between work and play has been crossed. LDV’s D90 sports utility is no crossover or mini version of the fourwheel-drive concept. It’s a full-sized, full-featured machine with seating for the entire family, up to seven people. They’ll be safe, too as the new LDV comes with a five-star ANCAP rating after passing a battery of intensive tests. It’s also available with real four-wheel drive, including automatically locking differentials, in an era when many vehicles pretend to have dirt and gravel chops — but come up short when it’s time to deliver. The biggest surprise is that it’s not a thumping big diesel under the hood, but a 220 horsepower turbocharged petrol unit, developing 350Nm of torque to deliver a two-tonne towing capacity. That means no pesky road user charges, and plenty of ability to get the boat in the water at the same time, but a very different feel from benchmark SUVs like the venerable Land Cruiser. Engine stop-start and clever ECU setting keep the fuel bill low, though there is a ‘sport’ mode, which will doubtless have plenty of appeal. In this category of 4x4, the equation is all about the cost to benefits analysis.
How much vehicle do you get for your dollars? In the case of the D90, the answer is ‘plenty’, with touch screen infotainment, Apple and Android support, hill descent control, acres of interior space and topping it all, a five-year warranty. You could literally buy two of these, one in each colour
available (white or black), for the cost of some other seven-seaters out there. All while remembering that the D90’s
stablemates are becoming a bit of a byword for reliable hard work, deep into the odometer band. ¢

Oh readas, all was not happy ina homested last Sundee morning. Boss appeared outside me kennil with me tux for brekkie looking pritty sad. This didn’t look too good, I thort, an’ then ‘ Sharlene came over tha yard wiv some cuppatees. “Hare you go deah. Nice cuppa. Things will get betta for the boys.” Then tha penny dropt readas. Boss had forgot ta pay tha Skie TV bill an’ he tole me he was gonna watch the Blidislow Cup game between the Orl Blacks an’ the Ozzies ona delayed coverage aroun’ midnight, in bed. “Too late for ewe tho’ Dog,” he’d tole me, so I curled on me fadge an’ mist the game. Well readas, I put two an’ three togither an’ came up with bad news. From the way Boss was, then the AB’s musta been beat by sum lucky drop goal or late try or sumthing. But No! Sharlene give me a pat an’ sed “Billy, the boys got thrashed big time.” Well, no wunder the Boss was snifflin’ in his cupptees. “Yep,” sed Sharlene. “Shoot downa kattil stop ata road gate an’ grab the papa Billy.” So I did, an’ had peep atta

Then Sharlene red in her skoolteacha voice what I saw. “The Wallabies ran riot over the All Blacks in Perth in the 100th game against Australia. They won 47–26, the most points Australia ever scored against New Zealand.” Then she sed some Ocker writer sed our Shag Hansin got egg on his face. Well, that sorta woke the Boss up. “Blimmin Ockers, nah — blimmin French ref was ter blame. Sent Barrit offa feeld ona red card wen it shooda been a warnin’.” Nah, ref probly made plinty of other misteaks too. Wait til Edin Park nek week. Ockers will be laughin ona other side of there face, eh? They neva beat us at home. Boss slurped his cuppatee, threw me half a scone, and sed “we betta git tound the lambin’ beat. We gotta few woolies ona ground.” “You go for it deah,” sed Sharlene. “I’ll go online and get tickits for Edin Park eh! We kin see the AB’s get there revenge.“ “I dunno about that,” seda Boss. “Betta I pay the Skie TV an’ watchit ona woolshed TV. Then if it terns to custid a
second time, we kin tern it off before it gets too scary.” Sharlene give me a smile ana pat. “Billy, we’ll just watch this space eh?” Yep. Roll on game too, eh readas. Cheers, Billy
