The government has earmarked $1.25 million towards improving freshwater quality in the Northern Wairoa River and a further $782,975 towards cleaning up more than two dozen Northland dune lakes, with a further $1.5 million to come from the Northland Regional Council.

“These projects demonstrate a strong degree of collaboration between our council, local iwi and our primary sector with a shared goal of improving freshwater. It’s fantastic to see central government also coming to the party with significant contributions of its own to these two very worthwhile projects,” said NRC chair Bill Shepherd. The larger of the two initiatives, the Northern Wairoa Freshwater Improvement Project, will likely cost $2.5 million over the next five years. It is designed to reduce sediment and bacteria levels in the river and its tributaries, and involves working with landowners to carry out sustainable land management practices. The Northland Dune Lakes Strategic Water Quality Improvement will cost almost $1.6 million over a similar length of time. Dune lakes in the wider Aupouri and Pouto areas are targeted to reduce nutrient levels and remove and control pest fish and water weeds. Meanwhile a $300,000-plus study says future horticulture irrigation projects in the Kaipara and mid-North could create hundreds of jobs. NRC Kaipara constituent Penny Smart says a larger-scale Kaipara water storage option would encourage diversification of existing land use, as well as provide a reliable water supply within Dargaville and the wider community. “The study estimates around 6,300 hectares, much of it on the Pouto Peninsula, could be irrigated for about

 A community planting day at Lake Waingata in Pouto. One of more than two dozen dune lakes in the wider Pouto and Aupouri areas that will benefit from newly-announced support

$115 million, predicting this could lead to employment for another 950 people and contribute about $85 million to the region’s GDP annually.” However, building the schemes would not come cheap, with a Kaipara option estimated at $17,000 per hectare. “The study suggests one possible solution could be to establish a special funding body to enable a mix of public, private and iwi investment.”

Kaipara District Council mayor Greg Gent welcomed the report: “Economic prosperity for Kaipara has a strong primary sector bias. A key part of any growth will involve a regular supply of water that can be managed in a way that protects the wider environment.” However, even with support, it’s likely to take years and many millions of dollars of design and engineering work before an irrigation scheme begins.  Your Authorised Husqvarna Servicing Dealer

Lighting up the bridge

Forum seeks new chair

u by Joanna Manson

u by Joanna Manson

An idea to light up the Northern Wairoa bridge has been in the back of locals minds for a while and now a group has come together hoping to rally for more support.

The Dargaville Business Forum is looking for a new chairperson to be the face and facilitator of the organisation.

 Former chairman Peter Boyd is stepping down from the role

 Kaipara District Council, community facilitator Darlene Lang and past Lions president Judy Dysart in front of the Northern Wairoa Bridge

Dargaville community members Judy Dysart, Kim McCahon, Max Wright, Jude O’connor, Brenda Jackson and Kaipara District Council, community facilitator Darlene Lang are the driving force behind the project. “We have spent the last couple of months gathering information. We thought we’ve got to start somewhere, so we’ve started gathering information and contacted the likes of the New Zealand Transport Association and the bridge builders,” said Darlene. Now well versed in what’s required to make the idea become reality the group is hoping to share their findings with the community to see if others are interested in supporting the idea. “It’s not going to be an overnight thing. It would be a long-term plan,” says

Northern Wairoa Lions past president Judy Dysart. The project will cost around $250,000 to have lights under one side of the bridge. NZTA requirements mean the lights are not to be a distraction to drivers. Darlene says they think it will still look “awesome” from town and fundraising for that figure is achievable. “It would be a unique feature to the town - it gives people pride in their own environment. It’s something visitors would appreciate as well as the locals,” says Judy. The lights would possibly be solar powered and on display within the next three years. The group welcomes any support or donations. Contact Judy at j.dysart@xtra.co.nz or Darlene dlang@kaipara.govt.nz ¢

Peter Boyd has stepped down from the position he has held for the last two years and says the position holds many opportunities and isn’t limited to local business owners. “Anyone can go for it, they just need to be willing to facilitate people, be out in the public and connect with other organisations.“ He said during the three years spent with the forum and two as chairperson many opportunities have presented themselves. “I’m stepping down as my own business direction has changed. The new focus is exciting for me and requires more of my time and attention.

“I’ve really valued and enjoyed the time I’ve been involved with the organisation through the passionate people I have met and connections made along the way.” Peter says the business forum has given exposure to Dargaville and strengthened valuable relationships with the Chamber of Commerce and Northland Inc. The forum will have its annual general meeting during the first week of September to formalise its committee and chair. Contact business@dargaville.org. nz.  ¢

The inaugural Northland Photography Awards were presented at a function at The Kauri Museum last Friday and will become an annual event, says museum CEO, Lisa Tolich. “The team are encouraged by the response of our local Northland photographers in our first year and look forward to building on this for our next event. We would particularly like to encourage our young aspiring photographers to take inspiration from our 2017 entrants and give it a go”.

The group meets twice a week to work on various types of personal craft including knitting, patchwork, crossstitch, card making and decorating. “There are a lot of new community members arriving in town and we’d love to see new people come along for friendship and sewing,” says Lois. “There are no rules — you can stay as long as you like, it’s $2 a day and we provide biscuits, tea and coffee, with a dining room to eat lunch. The obligation free group is similar to a drop-in centre but for like-minded craft lovers.

“Stitches and Crafts has been a great success but we have plenty of room for those new to town to join.” Lois remembers when she was new to Dargaville and knows it can be challenging to meet new people. It is one of the reasons she started ‘our place’. The group even caught the attention of a French lady who resides in Ruawai over summer and comes along during the summer months. Stitches and Crafts runs from 10am-4pm every Tuesday and Friday. Phone Lois for more information 027 473 0598. ¢

Petition to ban plastic Feedback call on SH1 u by Joanna Manson

u by Joanna Manson

A petition to ban single-use plastic bags has been presented to the Kaipara District Council in a bid for Kaipara to lead the way as plastic free.

The New Zealand Transport Agency wants to hear community feedback on options for upgrading State Highway 1 between Whangarei and Te Hana to improve safety and journey reliability.

 The paper petition has attracted 650 signatures while online it has attracted another 1,559 supporters from all over the world

The petition attracted over 2,000 signatures from supporters in Kaipara, and on line. “I thought I should do something as Love Kaipara educator and as a councillor. Originally it was an idea for Northland, then I thought it would be good to have Kaipara leading the way to change behaviour so I put the petition out there,” said Victoria del la Varis-Woodcock. The council will now send the petition on to the Ministry for the Environment.

“I think that this petition has been invaluable and will be a signal to government that many people feel strongly about this issue,” says Victoria. “There are compostable alternatives that can be used that are plant based materials. “I urge retailers that have the power in this situation to consider a shift to the alternative bags so consumers have a choice.” Kaipara local Margaret Baker co-led the petition alongside Victoria. ¢

The consultation process is part of a series of initiatives the transport agency is planning on behalf of the Government to improve the road alignment to reduce the number of deaths and serious crashes, and provide more predictable journeys on the key route between Northland and Auckland. “State Highway 1 is a vital link between Northland and the rest of the country for freight, communities and tourism. “Around two million tonnes of freight moves between Northland and Auckland each year and tourism in Northland accounts for $1 billion a year. Improving the region’s freight connections will be a game changer for the wider Northland economy,” says the transport agency’s system design manager Brett Gliddon. Te Hana is where the northern Auckland motorway network will

start once the government’s Puhoi to Wellsford Road of National Significance is finished in 2021. Two options for a future bypass of the Brynderwyn Hills are also being presented for public feedback. “We want communities involved from the very beginning to hear their views on the concepts we’ve created and how they think these will work in their communities. “We will then use that feedback to help identify a preferred option for the Whangarei to Port Marsden Highway 4-lane project and the Brynderwyn Bypass,” says Brett. Kaipara community feedback sessions will take place at: Kaiwaka War Memorial Hall, August 15, 3pm to 7pm. Tulip cafe, Maungaturoto, August 17, 11am. General manager Courtney Davis said this was the first time the staff and volunteer-run trust has reached out to the online fundraising platform. “We launched our PledgeMe campaign with the hope of engaging with local communities and wider New Zealand about the issues we face here in the forest as well as with the intent to raise some money for the important work that we do.” Courtney said the trust relies heavily on the “financial and practical support” of people and communities to run their basic operations. “Volunteers are a massive part of this but we also need more tools and resources to do this important work as the forest develops and grows. “Our goals in establishing a millennium kauri forest requires protecting and restoring fauna and fostering an understanding of kauri forest and ecosystems through education and research. “We are very serious about becoming predator free and having healthy forests for people to enjoy.” The Waipoua Forest Trust was established in 1998 with the intent of protecting, promoting and restoring the forest on both the southern and

Soup Mums and smiles Safety around concussion u by Anna Harding

u by Anna Harding

Two Dargaville mums have started a soup stall at The Dargaville Riverside Markets. The difference with this new venture is that they are giving their soup away for free.

Rugby player education about concussion took a step forward in Kaipara with a visit by New Zealand Rugby Union research analyst Danielle Salmon to speak with members of the Dargaville High School first fifteen.

With a choice of vegetable or pumpkin, the Dargaville Soup Mums have come to every second market, for the last six weeks. The ladies decided to make the free soup to help out anyone who needs it and “we just thought it would be a great way to meet people in the community,” said Heather Hobson. “It makes people happy, so that’s a big part of it too.” said Rae Mitchell. At this stage the ladies plan to only

run their stall over winter, “although I’ve got some ideas about summer as well, but we’ll see,” said Heather. The soup ingredients have so far come as donations from friends, and Countdown have donated buns. Heather and Rona Mitchell, Rae’s daughter, make the soup. The ladies both said “we’ve not had anyone take a cup of soup without a smile. Thats our payment.” ¢

Danielle is setting up a pilot study which looks at player education around concussion and baseline testing for concussion symptoms. The presentation focussed on signs and symptoms, what to do following a concussion and New Zealand Rugby guidelines around returning to play following a concussion. Dargaville High School teacher and first fifteen manager Tui Raeli said “the mounting evidence relating head trauma to long-term health issues is staggering. A recent American study

found that out of 202 deceased American football players, 177 were diagnosed with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).” CTE is a degenerative disease found in people who have suffered repeated blows to the head. “Out of 111 NFL players, 110 showed signs of CTE. That’s 99 per cent. If we can better equip our students with knowledge pertaining to concussion we hope that they can make safe and informed decisions about their own health." ¢

My journey to Kaipara u by Anna Harding

With Kaipara’s population on the rise, new people are bringing vibrancy and skills to the district. In this series we’ll get to know some of our latest residents. Dr Minoo Esfehani was born in Iran and has spent most of her life there. After completing her Masters in Tourism she decided to do her PhD, but in another country for a new experience. “I was applying for scholarships as well. I applied to a few universities in different countries and I got a good scholarship at Otago University, for a PhD in Tourism and control studies in protected areas.” She started the three-year course in November 2013. “Then it was about two years ago that I met Andy. When I finished my PhD Andy got a job here in Dargaville so we moved up in December and got married two weeks ago.” At first, the quiet life was a bit of a shock. “I was living in Dunedin for three years. Before that I was living in Tehran with 12 million people.” But now, “I love

everything around here, the very nice people, the nature. I’ve only been here since December, but now I have many friends. Its really nice. People are warm and friendly.” Minoo has also been looking for jobs since her move. “My PhD was a very broad topic. I tried to lean towards tourism culture and nature together. When I moved up here I was hoping to get involved in one of the DOC projects, because my project and my background is basically on protected areas and there are many protected forests around here. I’m still hoping I can get involved with DOC because I have knowledge and experience I can use.” Meanwhile, Minoo also applied for a rare and sought after research job at the South African North-West University in Potchefstroom. “It is a post doctoral  Andy Walker and Dr Minoo Esfehani

project for 12 months. I decided to go because so far I haven’t found any jobs here and it’s good — not many people can get that position. “We are waiting for our visas because Andy is coming with me as well for six months, as that’s what he could get off from work. Hopefully we will go

A community to get involved in u by Andy Bryenton

All too often these days ‘community’ is an abstract idea — not a real and concrete thing, a network of neighbours who know each other, or a shared set of resources like libraries and hospitals and parks. In our big cities the ‘community’ is often invoked by politicians, but when it comes to knowing the folks over the fence we’re left at a loss. Travel just a few hours out of the urban sprawl however, and things are very different. Small town New Zealand is many things, but one that’s often overlooked is ‘friendly’. Take this simple example. Here, on the streets of Dargaville or Maungaturoto, people actually say ‘good morning’ to each other. And not just before trying to sell you a timeshare apartment. The Kaipara — and most of rural New Zealand — is a bit more relaxed, a bit more laid back, and a lot more tightknit than the city. Part of that may be because small towns are small enough that everyone knows everyone else, but there’s more to it. Isolation from big-box shopping and multiplex entertainment means that out here, people still have fun by getting together. And that’s a huge plus when it comes to reasons to live here. We have sports clubs which are all about having a good

game, rather than wearing the right labels to the clubrooms. We have arts associations with a huge depth of talent, but also a down-to-earth nature which makes joining in less daunting. You may not be a Dan Carter or a Pablo Picasso, but small town clubs are inclusive. With a little suppor t and encouragement, you might just find you are more talented than you believed. It’s the same across the board, with creative endeavours and outdoor pursuits aplenty to choose from. Our Little Theatre and repertory companies put on world class shows on a budget that wouldn’t buy a coffee in Hollywood, because they’re staffed by passionate locals. Want to learn about your family history, learn to shoot, get outdoors or

restore a vintage motorcycle? We have clubs for all of those activities here. Even our local radio station is a community project, built from the ground up. Perhaps it’s the knowledge that, should disaster strike, we’re in this together that brings small communities closer. Perhaps it really is the fact that we have to make our own fun and rely on each other to help. Whatever the case, it’s good to live somewhere where you not only know your neighbours’ names, but also share some of their leisure pursuits. ¢

Making house calls for appliance emergencies With more people than ever before calling the Kaipara home, it’s been a busy year for those who outfit and renovate homes. That means more modern technology packed into Kaipara kitchens and laundry rooms, and a greater need for a reliable repair service on the road. Local whiteware and appliance ‘doctor’ Ameet Maharaj has plenty of experience keeping refrigerators, washers, dryers, stoves and freezers working at full capacity — close to a decade in fact, spent with the McKay Electrical company in Whangarei. Lately he’s been the go-to technician for McKay’s 100 Percent Store here in Dargaville as well, but growing demand for his services has seen him branch out into a one-stop business of his own, entitled the Appliance Doctor. It’s a method which brings customers the best of both worlds, as those with appliance quirks and faults can still book

Ameet’s services through McKay’s in the main street as well as contacting him on the telephone. A close relationship with the top provider of whiteware in town also means this ‘doctor’ has plenty of top grade parts at his disposal if a transplant is needed. That being said, there’s no limit to the range of brands and models which Dargaville’s new mobile appliance repairman can fix. Those years of experience have also put Ameet in contact with nearly all of the big names in whiteware, so he knows who to call for parts across the board. Equipped with a toolbox, an encyclopedic knowledge of his trade and a van for pickups and deliveries, the Appliance Doctor has arrived at just the right time for another reason as well. With all indications pointing to an influx of older folks coming to retire here in the North, having a skilled technician on call to make house calls certainly beats having to manhandle a big chest freezer or oven onto a trailer for the over 65s. And with spring approaching, hunters and anglers will want their freezers operating at tip top efficiency to hold the new season’s catch.

When your whiteware needs help, you don’t want to wait around. The Appliance Doctor has come to town to do house calls, fixing up your washers, stoves, dishwashers, fridges, freezers and more with years of experience and access to all the best parts. Let him call on you in the ‘Appliance Ambulance’ and take the stress out of appliance repairs!

A desirable lifestyle choice u by Andy Bryenton

The jump in average house prices across the Kaipara region has caused ripples as far afield as the South Island, as those seeking a sunnier, more secure retirement catch on to the appeal of our part of the country. It’s a trend which has seen new stores open, new services become available and existing ones expand — but why has the Kaipara become such a hot destination for over 65s? Part of the appeal of this part of the nation is centred on its proximity to large metropolitan areas and their services, while still remaining rural in both environment and temperament. The slower pace of life and the friendliness of our small Kaipara towns is perfectly balanced by the ability to hit the highway and be in downtown Auckland in just two-and-a-half hours, or Whangarei in 45 minutes. Planned motorway improvement will shave even more time off this journey. At the same time, the weather is noticeably warmer here, with natural environment closer to home, and the beaches — both east and west — are far from crowded, offering great fishing and scenery. A look at local artist’s work shows that being close to nature is a great inspiration. Growing towns such as Dargaville also already boast many amenities which recommend them to an older demographic — ease of access to

a hospital and medical centre, a central supermarket and a weekly produce market, businesses which accept the SuperGold card, and professional tradespeople on call. Selling a home in Auckland in the current market also makes a move north that much more affordable, with the option to purchase investment property locally too. Perhaps most importantly, many of our Kaipara towns have the facility to move

into more elder-focussed living as time goes by. Retirement communities such as Dargaville’s Riverdale village offer security and next to zero maintenance for older residents, and this model is set to be replicated elsewhere as the population both grows and ages. Across New Zealand the average age is increasing, and as more city dwellers leave work to seek a retirement lifestyle we will be ready to welcome them. ¢

KAIPARA LIFESTYLER

Business looks ahead u by Andy Bryenton

In the next decade the demographic of the Kaipara district will continue to change rapidly. Predictions abound that the current migration of over 65s out of the major centres will continue to redistribute not only the population of New Zealand but also some of the equity built up in the massive Auckland property market. As the city builds up, traditional quarter-acre suburbanites move out, and without the need to commute to work, their dream is ‘the good life’. That’s already having an impact on tradespeople and the real estate industry here in the Kaipara, where a sizeable jump in house prices reflects new-found demand. Tradies such as electricians, plumbers and builders are

poised between being too busy and needing to take on staff. This means apprenticeship opportunities in the long term, but a squeeze for qualified workers in the here and now. Those with apprentices in training show

great foresight, but the rapidity of the ‘sea change boom’ has taken many by surprise. There’s scope, too, for other businesses to move their focus from centralised, large-conurbation hubs to small town service centres. Downsizing and expecting older folks to travel large distances will simply not cut it when those customers have been used to city convenience. Plans by amenities such as banks to pull out of rural New Zealand will have to be reconsidered as people with no mortgage and potentially money to invest from their city-side home sale move in. Businesses which cater to an older demographic — audiologists and optometrists, cafes and craft stores for

example — will provide opportunities for local entrepreneurs and employees to expand their work choice. And, as many of our new residents come to the region with a lifetime of work experience — and plenty of vigour — expect to see the rise of boutique industries helmed by savvy over 65s. Combine business acumen with the trend for natural living and you get success stories such as regional artisan cheeses, sauces and pickles, handmade crafts and back-shed engineering inventions. Like many places which were once primarily dairy farm service hubs, the villages and towns of the Kaipara can expect a fresh injection of commerce and custom. How we embrace it is up to us. ¢

aurilands Skills Centre has been in the Kaipara district for 27 years. The Kaipara is our home, and the home of 20 amazing adults that all live with an intellectual disability. Kaurilands started with 4 residents and has grown, over the years, to being at full capacity with 20 awesome people. Being in the Kaipara has been the attraction for families with a disabled family member. It’s the best place to live because there is the rural lifestyle and town life to choose from. At Kaurilands, our networks have chosen the rural option as their family member can benefit from a safe space around them, one of the best 360 degree views of Tokatoka Peak, The Northern Wairoa River, the Tokatoka farms and the Ruawai plains. What more could they ask for? There is more as the reason Kaurilands has been successful is down to its committed staff team, management and Trust Board from the area, and the community. The surrounding community in the Kaipara has been the best anyone could ask for with an impaired family member. The community is caring, accepting of all members of society and treats our people the same as anyone else. Our people aren’t differentiated, or alienated from existence, they are welcomed with open arms by the Kaipara Community. Kaurilands would have crumbled many years ago without the community support that we are grateful for, and appreciative of.

We have the expertise: • Farm drainage, river & floodgate work, stopbank build & maintenance. • Driveway establishment or restoration, water tabling, metal rolling & site works. • Hole boring – all applications, even under existing driveways for culverts or services.

We have the equipment:

The community has embraced our people in their lives, their work place and treated them as equals. The Kaipara community has ‘enabled’ our people in a disabling society, for which we can never thank them enough.

Volunteers required

New tracks for lakes

u by Joanna Manson

u by Anna Harding

Habitat for Humanity are on the lookout for Kaipara volunteers to take part in their ‘Global Village’ programme in Colombia this November.

As part of implementing their Kai Iwi lakes reserve management plan, the Kaipara District Council has begun work on a three-metre wide emergency vehicle access track around the entire three lakes.

 The handing over of new house keys during the last Global Village Trip to Colombia

A small team of 15 volunteers will travel to Armenia in Colombia’s coffee growing area and work alongside a partner family to build a new home for a family currently living in slum housing. “We have seven places left and it would be great to have some Kaipara volunteers on board,” says events and marketing manager Laura Welsby. “Volunteers do not need to possess any building skills or experience — just a willingness to get stuck in, have fun, and get a little dirty. Over a week, the team will build the home alongside the

partner family, but when the team leave the impact of their work will live on — the family will then have a safe, decent place to live. “This home is their future. It is stability, strength and self-reliance for the family.” The team will depart on November 17 and the build will take one week to complete. If you are after a holiday with a difference contact Laura on 020 4080 6650 or email infonorthland@habitat. org.nz. ¢

While the Lake Taharoa primary track has been completed, the Waikare portion will still take some time to finish. The new access tracks are also intended to be used for walking and biking with the Lake Waikare track being around 3.5 kilometres long, Lake Taharoa round 7.5km and Lake Kai Iwi around 2.5km. “This track will make it easier to walk around and explore Lake Waikare. This old track was quite overgrown in places, not well marked and often muddy in the winter. It will also link Lake Waikare with the tracks already formed around Lake Taharoa,” said parks and community manager Sue Hodge. The access track adds to the lakes’ other existing walk and cycle ways. When completed, they will comprise three light service ridge walking and biking tracks with a combined length of 7.4km, the narrower mountain bike tracks on the east side of the lakes which are 11.8km combined, and the Lake Taharoa edge walkway that’s 2.7km long. Council has been extending the Kai Iwi Lakes’ track network over the last two years. This section is

Over the next decade, many other improvements are planned for the lakes, including more walking trails in the surrounding bush, sheltered lookouts, interpretation panels and continuing bush regeneration. ¢

100 IT’S NOT A TARGET

What Kaipara dads really want u by Andy Bryenton

Father’s Day is a tough holiday to buy for — dads can be notoriously difficult to shop for, as a perfect bloke’s gift combines a bit of practicality with a bit of luxury. That being said, a look at the kind of things men buy for themselves highlights a few trends which can help you pick up the perfect present. A current trend that’s promoting men’s health is the big push to stop smoking. Recently it’s been acknowledged by the authorities that one of the best paths to quitting — especially for those who have tried to go ‘cold turkey’ and failed — is by turning to a vaporizer as a smokefree solution. Psychologists accept that having a water-vapour equivalent to a cigarette — which can even taste like rolled tobacco — is a great stepping stone to giving up altogether. It’s important that if you want to give Dad the gift of smoke-free living that you choose a quality product and top-shelf ‘e-liquid’ to get on the right track. Another thing that every man should have is a well-made suit. Timeless and elegant, having a proper formal suit in the closet means he’s set for all kinds of events, from weddings to business meetings and more. No matter dad’s size or shape, a suit which is made to measure will make him look as sharp

 Dads who tinker in the shed often come up with amazing creations. A love of classic bikes and beer created this ‘keg cycle’

as 007 and as statesmanlike as JFK. Pair up a nice set of threads with an occasion to wear them by booking in for a hearty, man-sized dinner for Father’s Day. With the current trend for craft beers, barbecue chef contests and small-batch whiskeys on television, we’d suggest a prime steak or a rack of ribs matched with some great local ale or a fine single malt. For a gift with a touch of class and traditional sentiment, a quality watch engraved with a message for dad is a time honoured favourite. In these days when a mobile phone serves as a timepiece for many, a classic mechanical watch lends a bit of elegance — and they’re built to last.

Handy dads would seem to be easy to buy for, but a little research may be on the cards if he likes to spend time in the shed. Check out the kind of projects dad likes to get into and see which tools he’s missing. We have some great options in town for both hand tools and power tools — an insider tip is to buy the kind of tools the professionals use. Is he restoring and old motorbike? See what your mechanic deploys. A welding project underway? Ask what an engineer would choose. Buying cheap tools for dad just means they’ll break, while good ones literally last a lifetime — and you’ll be helping encourage those DIY projects. There’s also the option of helping to fill

Darts are growing in popularity, so a dart board where dad and his mates can hone their skills before heading to the pub for some friendly competition is a great idea. Giving back to nature Dunnys — and what we do during our ‘daily visit’ are a bit like that other subject our mother never talked about — we were given our potty training, the nappies were removed and from then on we did our own learning! And since having our nappys taken off us we have all learned that ‘go and flush’ is what we do. Every day — or at

least most days for most of us. That’s a lot of flushing. Imagine for a moment the immense infrastructure that our local councils have provided for this simple convenience — pun intended — where water is either captured in purpose-made dams or taken from existing rivers, piped for miles, chemically treated to drinking standard, and piped for more miles to our place so we can simply push the appropriate flush button — 1 or 2 — to send it for more miles to another treatment plant where it is again reconstituted chemically and piped yet again out to sea — or to a river — or somewhere on the planet! It is estimated that every one of us has flushed away 6,500 litres of treated water a year since our nappies were taken off us. Imagine the proportion of the council rates that we pay that goes to pay for our flush button convenience. But like so many other aspects of daily living the economic and ecological cost of the ‘daily visit’ has been re-visited. In 2001 a composting toilet was produced

in the USA specifically for boats. They called it AirHead. Boats call their toilets ‘heads’ in recognition of the historic use of a simple plank at the head of the ship back in the sailing ship era. ‘Going to the head’ was sometimes a hazardous necessity. And the USA development used air instead of water. Air head. This was certainly a different way to go. The toilet employed a compost medium to process the human waste and it worked. The toilet is effectively its own treatment plant. No water, no pipes, no smell. It is not surprising that the concept has been

accepted world wide and has spread from boats to caravans and motor homes. Offgrid living is gaining a huge following world wide and the Airhead toilet offers this community an economic alternative that is totally in tune with nature without involving the permitting requirements of conventional dunnys. These toilets give back to Mother Earth. They retain our body’s natural separation of liquid and solid waste and each is treated separately. Both elements benefit the environment when applied correctly as many tiny home and off-grid cabin dwellers are learning. Naturally.

The ultimate big boys toys u by Andy Bryenton

AM/FM Radio Earmuff

It may be a vain hope to find one of these wrapped for Father’s Day — unless your kids are very, very generous. But when it comes to what blokes want, they’ve already spoken with their wallets and their preferences in the automotive world. When the exotic hypercars and military-spec off-roaders are taken out of the equation, it seems that Kiwi men are after two different kinds of machine — the ubiquitous, ever-popular V8 sports car or muscle car, and that new contender for ‘king of the highway’, the versatile modern ute. In the first and second categories sales figures both here and overseas show that Ford have cracked the perfect formula with their latest Mustang exceeding all expectations, while the Ford Ranger ute continues to reign as our favourite light commercial. Already a spicy proposition, the original Mustang — a badge which holds the title of world’s most popular sports car — is now available with upgrades from veteran muscle-car tuners Roush, Shelby and Saleen to name but a few. Roush’s ferocious ‘stage 2’ Mustang broke cover at Dargaville Ford recently, attracting more than a few stares as it waited to take off to its lucky new owner. Of course, the factory-standard Mustang packs a visual and accelerative punch without further adornment, and it’s so popular that there’s a waiting list at many dealerships for certain colour and engine combos. The Ranger ute should need no introduction, but when it comes to what Kiwi blokes want, there’s a

ATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained. A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. At this stage your septic system is a serious health hazard to you and your children. Human waste produces faecal coliform bacteria, a source of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis as well as Hepatitis A debilitatand other diseases. Hepatitis can be a debilitat ing condition and cause long-term harm to children. There are only three remedies. One: stop using the septic system until it recovers. This can take

over a month and is not normally practical. Two: excavate your septic system and relocate it. This is very costly and time consuming, sometimes requiring new resource consents and different systems. Three: treat your septic system with Septi-Cure™ every six months. Septi-Cure is cost effective. By far the most cost effective solution is to pour one litre of Septi-Cure™ down the toilet bowl every six months. This simple action will help keep your system working at top efficiency by reducing solids and scum. Instead of emptying your tank frequently, the reduction in solids and scum saves you expensive pump out costs. Your irrigation field and leach lines will become clear of slimes and blockages so nature can handle the gradual seepage and evaporation for you. When this is happening your system will be operating effectively and not endangering you or your family’s health. What is Septi-Cure™ Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring

microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. As they progress through to your irrigation field they feed on the slimes that prevent seepage and evaporation. When seepage and evaporation return to normal, you have reduced the risk of contaminating groundwater and the environment as well as reducing the chances of infection for you and your family. Eventually, they get washed out of the system and have to be replaced to continue their work. This is why you introduce Septi-Cure™ to your septic system every six months for maximum efficiency. Problematic septic tanks – treat with Septi-Cure™. Prevent septic system problems – treat with Septi-Cure™.

A satisfied customer in Hamilton has been using Septi-Cure for over five years. He says this allows them to have an odour free septic tank with low maintenance costs. He also says that his service person is amazed at how well Septi-Cure works, keeping their tank in very good condition. * Results May Vary Before*
