Raising the curtain on creativity
u by Andy Bryenton Dargaville’s 2023 wearable arts extravaganza is almost ready to hit the runway and the stage, with a gigantic effort behind the scenes to deliver a sensational show.
“I’m super excited,” says Terri Donaldson. She has been instrumental in drawing together the many strands of the Alice in Wonderland-themed spectacle to create a seamless whole.
“It’s been a lot of work, with six different jobs sometimes at once. I’ve found myself on Zoom meetings with AwhiWorld, our audio and visual digital artists, while sewing costumes at the same time, for example. Seeing it all come together is very rewarding.”
As well as coordinating the sounds and sights which will serve as a framing device for the wearable artworks of a large group of contestants, Terri has been working with two dance troupes, who will bring motion and energy to the wearable arts catwalk.
Taina Ututaonga, part of the worldfamous Royal Family dance troupe, mentors a trio of highly talented young dancers with various levels of experience across the group, ranging
from school-level dance to international competition.
Meanwhile, educator Kylie Reynolds has brought together a group of dancers from Otamatea High School, giving them the benefit of her 20 years of experience. With a passion for live performance and top-level choreographic creativity, they bring another aspect of energy to the wearable arts stage.
“Having two amazing groups of talented young people has been pure joy. Their enthusiasm and energy is contagious. It’s exciting to add a youth component to the show and introducing different styles of performance to complement the amazing audio and visual landscape,” says Terri.
Combine this dance artistry with visual digital projection art, lighting, a custom-composed score, and the flights of imagination and fantasy which make up the wearable arts contest’s three categories — you have a very big show indeed. That’s why, with Dargaville’s town
out of commission, event organiser John Pickworth decided to put the wearable arts under canvas for 2023.
A gigantic marquee has been sourced, larger even than those used for the annual Northland Field Days. This gigantic structure, fully floored and able to seat 300, is full of superlative figures and represents a major step up in scope and scale for entertainment in Dargaville.
“The marquee will cover half of Pioneer Rugby Park, and it’s 10 metres wide and five metres tall,” says John. “This is needed to accommodate a 34-metre-long runway, which serves as the central stage for the wearable arts. A second structure will form the foyer of the event. Once again, this is completely floored and big enough to accommodate a large crowd of patrons.”
Tickets for the wearable arts are on sale now via iticket.co.nz, by calling 050 848 4253, or from the offices of the Kaipara Lifestyler on River Road, Dargaville. ¢

Flood response in two Long Term Plans
u by Andy Bryenton
Flood resilience, extreme weather and the management of the Northern Wairoa River are to be addressed in the Northland Regional Council and Kaipara District Council’s forthcoming Long Term Plans.
With 30 drainage districts to cover and eight pieces of legislation to bear in mind, this is a big issue for Kaipara’s elected members, even before the issue of climate change is raised.
‘Rising sea levels over time are likely to reduce the level of service provided by coastal stopbanks, particularly in extreme weather events. A range of alternative solutions are likely to be needed,’ read a joint statement by the Northland Regional Council and the KDC released last week.
A range of flood-proofing resilience measures are already under discussion for the KDC’s next Long Term Plan, though pointedly, the draft documentation states that current rates may not cover costs in this area.
This documentation shows a schedule of flood mitigation works from 2024 until 2034. As well as continued upkeep, drainage channel clearance and weed spraying, this schedule suggests that digital mapping of Kaipara’s drainage districts could begin next year. New

Dargaville is set to acknowledge Daffodil Day with multiple opportunities to support the good work of the New Zealand Cancer Society.
The ANZ Bank is leading the charge as it has for more than three decades, drawing together prizes donated by generous local businesses and planning a major bake sale and barbecue for Friday, August 25. ANZ manager Dania Wood says that Dargaville’s traditional big support for Daffodil Day comes down to the personal nature of how cancer has affected so many lives.
floodgate works in Ruawai, and stopbank protection from Dargaville to Te Kōpuru would then come in 2025.
Most interestingly, the draft for councillors to consider includes the recommendation to ‘establish a multiagency group for river management, to determine responsibilities for ownership, management and control’. As the Northern Wairoa River comes under the auspices of the NRC, and siltation issues are included in that body’s LTP process, a new authority to govern Northland’s biggest river may be on the horizon. ¢
“In a way, I feel that the response we get to the appeal is because of the way it has impacted family and friends for so many of us,” says Dania. “In the same way, nearly everyone can say that they have benefitted, directly or indirectly, from the treatment and support the NZCS offers.”
On a lighter note, Dania also mentions that everyone loves an oldfashioned bake sale and sausage sizzle, with the annual Daffodil Day engagement being one of the biggest to grace the main street. Every steak
sandwich and banger counts toward a generous donation to the cause.
It’s the same with the annual prize draw organised by ANZ staff. Every Daffodil Day, local retailers donate items to the prize pool, and each year, they seem to exceed the last. This time around, there are packs full of gifts, vouchers, clothing, homewares, and a big screen television waiting to be won.
“Come in and grab your tickets, or simply make a donation. See us on the day for a proper sausage or a steak sandwich, too. It’s all for a very good purpose,” Dania said. ¢

Big cast for comedy Tales from the political playing field
u by Andy Bryenton
A gigantic cast has stepped up to volunteer for the Dargaville Little Theatre’s next play, bringing life to the vision of a beloved author and a first-time local director.
u by Andy Bryenton
Shane Jones will take a break from election campaigning to deliver an after-dinner speech on the ‘sport of politics’ on September 6, visiting the Baylys Beach Golf Club with charity in mind.
Mr Jones will speak by invitation of the Liniment Club, an organisation supporting local causes by arranging catered dinners with keynote, entertaining speakers. The recipients of a donation from this engagement will be the Kaipara Heritage Machinery Club.
Rehearsals have begun for Guards! Guards!, the live stage play of Sir Terry Pratchett’s comedy adventure novel of the same name, and the actors assembled represent the biggest non-musical cast in the theatre’s history. While DLT has a long tradition of staging plays with full musical accompaniment, a chorus or an ensemble, this is certainly the biggest comedy ever shown under the theatre’s lights.
“An enthusiastic turnout for auditions has seen nearly everyone get a speaking part, from bumbling thieves and dodgy guardsmen to the world’s worst secret society, the grim reaper, and a civic leader with a painful aversion to mime artists,” says director Jamie Gray.
As rehearsals get underway, work is also happening behind the scenes
to craft the props needed to bring a fully-realised mediaeval-style fantasy setting to life.
There’s the challenging job of crafting armour for the titular city guards, who range in size from a very large sergeant to a corporal so tiny he has paperwork to prove he’s human. Then there’s the task of creating a costume for a silverback orangutan, and two dragons, one of which is described as ‘as long as a street’ and the other of which is small enough to be carried like a lapdog.
Rehearsals will run three times each week until the play’s opening in late October, only the second time one of comic fantasist Sir Terry Pratchett’s works has been brought to the stage in New Zealand. ¢

“When I look at vintage machinery, including horse collar and plough, I see a testimony to the grit and determination needed to create an economy and a nation,” said Mr Jones, explaining his support for the heritage machinery cause.
As a person from a rural Northland background, several machines on display, including classic tractors, earthmovers and fire appliances, would have been part of the backdrop of Shane Jones’ younger years.
The Liniment Club, under whose name the forthcoming event will be held, has welcomed Mr Jones as a speaker before. Last January, he addressed the public at a Liniment Club gathering in Mangawhai, surprising the crowd with his declaration of his Northland candidacy. Previous speakers have included prominent sportspeople, including former All Black captain Graham Mourie.

Kaipara schools are leading the way as tree planting on the huge Kaipara Harbour catchment sees the milestone of one million trees planted against silting and erosion.
The Kaipara Moana Remediation is a $300 million 10-year project to clean up the waterway, and schools are playing a vital part through the Enviroschools project.
Recently schools from Ruawai, Tinopai and Matakohe have been planting catchments at Paparoa, and they will be back in action again next Tuesday after the news that a million native trees will be in the ground this winter.
“I am about linking schools and students with local community and sustainability projects in days out to run the planting days and embed the learning within them,” says Enviroschools facilitator Jaqueline Knight.
“Local schools that have been involved in KMR farm waterway planting days this year: are Dargaville High, Ruawai College, Tinopai school, Paparoa Primary, Maungatūroto, and Kaiwaka Primary. Whitebait Connection has also been involved on some of these days as experts on inanga and waterway health. Other role models include Lions, which also do pest control, Otamatea Weed Control Group volunteers, and Sustainable Kaipara,
which provides reusable cups and disposes of any waste.
“Students also learn about other practices farmers are taking to mitigate against erosion and run-off on the day.”
In total, KMR has invested in projects worth more than $10.3 million. More than 480km of fencing has been completed or contracted, the same distance from Poutō Beach to Auckland and back again. More than 94,000 hectares of land is now managed under 440 sediment reduction plans contracted with landowners. ¢
Otamatea High School’s basketball team is headed for the national championships after placing third out of all of Northland at a recent inter-school event.
It’s a dream scenario for the team, which formed spontaneously after a Kaipara Basketball introductory skills session. It has spent the past two years growing and progressing to develop the skills needed to challenge the country’s best.
“It all began with that skills session for people who wanted to give the game a try, and they have built from there,” says Belinda Webber. She is a team supporter and parent whose son loves the game.
“They are very lucky with the people they have around them, such as their coach Don Lawson, schoolteachers and a very supportive, involved group of parents. This year they have reached new heights.”
After two years of working hard on the fundamentals of the game, the team, which comprises players ages 13 to 17, has come together with fresh synergy. They have recently beaten all but two other Northland schools on
the hardwood, schools with many more pupils, fielding teams made up entirely of their oldest, biggest, and importantly, tallest boys.
In two weeks’ time, the Otamatea team will be off to Palmerston North to face its biggest challenge yet. For parents and educators, seeing the spirit that these young athletes have shown, the challenge is to raise funds for the trip at short notice. They’re asking anyone who can help with their efforts to consider a donation toward transport costs, which would be very gratefully received. ¢

Fresh local music released Uniting for literacy
u by Amy Fifita
Pūtoi Rito Communities of Readers Project is making headway in Dargaville with local schools, businesses and the National Library collaborating to encourage children to value reading.
“We want children to read for pleasure. Literacy also flows to selfesteem and wellbeing,” said National Libraries capabilities coordinator Anne Dickson.
The project is designed to promote wellbeing, strengthen community connections and empower tamariki and rangatahi.
“We are building the support for children to make connections with libraries for a lifelong relationship with them.
“The National Library provides books to schools on request, and the only cost to schools in sending the books back. Kaipara Libraries are supporting the local community and us and are knowledgeable about what the school libraries do.”
Anne visited Dargaville to meet with Selwyn Park School’s acting principal Todd Warmington, librarian Donna King and project coordinator Katarina Allely.
“Selwyn Park School is 110% behind this wonderful initiative,” said Mr Warmington.
“Reading to your child, even five minutes a day can create a love for it and
doing it together improves language and literacy and strengthens relationships and can reduce stress.”
Katarina’s role is to collaborate with schools, businesses and marae to create better book access for children. A local group, the Men’s Shed, is assisting with the project.
“The Men’s Shed is building us book stands to put in businesses and at various schools. We are encouraging whānau to read at home and for children to choose books,”says Katarina.
“I also attended Matariki events at Dargaville Primary School and Te Kōpuru School and had discussions with families reading with their children.” ¢
u by Andy Bryenton
As well as being the driving force behind an original score for Dargaville’s forthcoming wearable arts show, composer Brian Baker has been busy in the studio, releasing a heavy slice of Kiwi rock this month.
Brian’s new work is led up by a single titled Belly, using the metaphor of being swallowed whole by a whale to explore ideas of solitude and coming back from a place of darkness.
“I was listening to a podcast about Joseph Cambell’s The Hero’s Journey and was really feeling that midwinter greyness,” says Brian.
“I was struck with the idea of isolation and focus, where the hero is stuck in a dark place and has only their calling to focus on and lead them out. Plus, the knowledge that all things are constantly changing. Hence a message from the belly of the whale; all this will change. So it’s a song of hope from a dark place that we all go through at some stage or another. I also felt the need to rock out a bit, so we ended up with this fast-paced, guitardriven thing.”
Comparisons can definitely be made with bands like Shihad, the Foo Fighters and other upbeat classic rockers. There’s even a music video featuring Brian rocking out in the forest with sparks, smoke and unusually aggressive string.
Belly is released through AAA Records on August 11, just when Brian is set to perform a series of shows at The Bay Of Island Jazz and Blues Festival. There’ll be a full-length vinyl LP released in November to coincide with a North Island tour. Until then, you can listen to the sound and watch the video at brianbaker.nz/belly. ¢

Renewable power zone revisited
u by Andy Bryenton
A new government push for renewable energy has renewed interest in making Kaipara and Northland part of a pilot renewable energy zone.
“Fast-tracking renewable energy generation helps to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and cut our carbon emissions,” said Environment Minister David Parker. “Nine solar panel projects have now been referred for fasttrack approval since 2020.”
At the same time, a wind farm near Dargaville has been greenlit, and three more major wind projects have been fast-tracked. The government last week teamed up with the world’s wealthiest private corporation, BlackRock, to plan for a future of 100% renewable energy. It has renewed calls for Kaipara and its Northland neighbours to become the country’s first Renewable Energy Zone.
“One way of streamlining the process is renewable energy zones (REZ), and Northland is the perfect place for a trial of this concept. Concentrating renewable energy in one zone can reduce the costs to upgrade the distribution network,” said McKay Corporation’s renewables manager Lauren Faithfull.
Just last month, the Te Purunga ki Te Raki Regional Skills Leadership Group,
Moulding creativity with education
u by Amy Fifita
which focusses on Northland for the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, noted that enthusiasm for Northland becoming the nation’s first REZ was strong.
‘Taitokerau is poised for a REZ. There is an abundance of natural resources (sun, wind and geothermal) alongside a high level of interest from iwi, industry, community and electricity generation developers,’ read its winter report.
They also pointed out that the energy sector is in need of staff, and will boost employment numbers. ¢
“Clay is good for developing motor skills and strengthening hand-to-brain communication,” says facilitator Micaela van den Berg.
Micaela teaches pottery at the school every Wednesday, and takes a full term before the artwork is ready. She has taught art for 20 years and enjoys passing her creative knowledge on to others.
“We use several different clays to play with. It is unique as a medium, and you can not recreate the works in any other way.”
Micaela said she teaches as many children as possible, and the programme is currently working in
two other schools — Dargaville Primary School and Tangowahine School. She plans to expand her scope and teach at more schools.
“I want to encourage the students and help them embrace their creative side. It is my second term teaching the programme at Selwyn Park School. I have the resources and a kiln to do it.”
Students the Lifestyler spoke to said they enjoyed making patterns with the different clay and the experience as a whole. Last term’s projects have recently been delivered to the school after going through the drying process.
“The programme is incredibly popular, and the children love making pottery.” ¢

Connecting with fitness Footpath upgrades begin
u by Amy Fifita
Recently, Ruawai Primary School and Dargaville Primary School students faced each other in a sports challenge to hone their bond and fitness levels.
u by Andy Bryenton
Work is set to begin in late August on a series of footpath and pedestrian crossing upgrades in Logan, Gordon and Onslow Streets.
“It is a way for Kaipara schools to collaborate and aligns with Northern Wairoa’s Kāhui Ako goal of increasing connections with each other,” says DPS principal Curtis Gaylor.
Ruawai students were welcomed to the DPS grounds with a pōwhiri and waiata before engaging in five different sports.
“One of our school’s goals is to revitalise and teach te reo Māori to our students, and the pōwhiri was an opportunity for our children to experience tikanga,” Curtis said.
Winners of the challenge get to hold the Nellie Yelcich Shield. The shield has been fought for since 2007, with the sports changing each year.
This year, teams played Rippa Rugby, basketball, netball, rugby and kī o rahi (a traditional Māori ball game). Teams consist of students from years five and six, and each game is played in short intervals.
“It is an opportunity for children who may not play club or Saturday sport and a good way for the students to connect annually,” said Ruawai Primary School principal Wayne Steele.
“The day is a fun activity and something different from the usual routine. The challenge is not about who wins or loses and gives students the idea of teamwork, socialisation and physical fitness.” ¢
The Kaipara District Council has confirmed Gordon Street will get a new KEA crossing for Selwyn Park School, and Onslow Street will get a new footpath. There will be new footpaths along Logan Street and a new footpath connection from Logan Street to Colville Road. These all tie in with recent consultation on better walking and cycling options, out for feedback as part of a Transport Choices programme.
“Recent consultation for this project shows strong support in the community for further investment,” said Nick Marshall, the Northland Transportation Alliance’s road safety lead, when the programme was announced in June this year.
“Engagement with the schools within Dargaville and local residents demonstrates strong support for the Transport Choices programme,
particularly extending the footpath network and providing safe pedestrian crossing facilities.”
Those further investments and extensions alluded to by Mr Marshall were first discussed well before the Transport Choices programme came into being. During 2022, under the auspices of the previous Smith administration of the KDC, a project to improve footpaths was instigated and consulted on with residents.
Thus, the work set to begin this week on Gordon and Onslow Streets is completely separate from the connectivity plans recently covered in this publication and discussed in open council. The completion of these footpath and crossing upgrades does not cancel or retract from those plans, as they will be funded by the government from a $348 million national fund. ¢

Council briefed on SNA credits Regional council’s foreshore plan
u by Andy Bryenton u by Andy Bryenton
Biodiversity credits, which could be bought and traded by those seeking to bolster their environmental credentials, could be a bonus for the Kaipara District Council.
At last week’s briefing, elected members heard of the scheme promoted by Associate Minister for the Environment James Shaw.
“Landowners, land managers, farmers, and Maōri should be looking at their wild spaces as a taonga, but also as a valuable source of supplementary income,” Shaw said. “This can then be used to support on-the-ground conservation, like reforestation, wetland restoration, or planting native vegetation.”
Under the scheme, Significant Natural Areas (SNAs) on both council-owned and private land would be eligible to earn credits. It’s possible that QEII covenanted land would also earn them. Private companies, charities, investors, philanthropists and others who wish to support biodiversity protection could buy biodiversity credits from landowners and choose to make specific claims about their positive impact, for example, in marketing.
It’s a financial sweetener atop a contentious issue. Under rules which came into force last week, all SNAs in Kaipara must be mapped, identified and effectively locked out of any future
development or intensification of use. District planners Paul Waanders and Katherine Overwater presented a report to councillors itemising the KDC’s new obligations.
“Council has anticipated the release of the statement for several years and has made decisions to hold off any work relating to the mapping of areas of significant indigenous vegetation or significant habitat of indigenous fauna,” said Mr Waanders said. ¢
Late last month, the Northland Regional Council adopted a new proposed Regional Plan for Northland, outlining many of its duties and authorities.
It is the next step in a process which began in 2017, with all appeals to the Environment Court on the proposed plan now resolved. However, one section of the plan, very pertinent to current discussions in Kaipara, will be sent to the Minister of Conservation for final approval.
As the Kaipara District Council begins to take measures to ensure beach drivers on the Ripiro Coast act responsibly, a section of the proposed Regional plan, part C.1.5.1, outlines the rules across the entire region for vehicles on beaches.
Quoting directly from these recently adopted rules, vehicles are only allowed on the foreshore providing that:
‘There is no disturbance of, or damage to, indigenous or migratory bird nesting or roosting sites. There is no disturbance of, or damage to, a mapped historic heritage area. There is no disturbance of, or damage to, a mapped site or area of significance to tāngata whenua.
‘Vehicles do not drive over pipi or cockle beds except where necessary for the use, maintenance, repair or removal of infrastructure, and do not damage or destroy other shellfish beds, and;
‘Vehicles do not drive over saltmarsh, saltmeadow, saltmeadow turfs, seagrass meadows, mangroves or mangrove aerial roots, and do not damage or destroy other indigenous vegetation.’
With all of these things present on Ripiro Beach, the adoption of the proposed Regional Plan and its oversight by the Minister of Conservation look set to define discussion on how off-road drivers may be regulated on the west coast. ¢

Yellow blooms across Kaipara
u by Andy Bryenton
Daffodil Day is coming again soon, with support for the hard work
the streets, turning towns around New Zealand yellow.
There are many reasons why Daffodil Day is one of the most supported and respected charity appeals on the Kiwi calendar. Nearly everyone in the nation has a friend, relative or colleague who has battled cancer. Statistically, 25,000 New Zealanders will receive that diagnosis each year. With medical science improving every day thanks to funding for research, the chances of making a full recovery are getting better all the time.
Early detection, good care and solid support are the keys to success. To aid in this, the NZCS put in more than one million kilometres of drive time to get patients to their medical appointments each year. It provides 50,000 nights of free accommodation to bring people closer to specialist medical services.
Add in their work promoting early detection and educating people on cancer risks, advocating for better healthcare and operating a full-time telephone service for information. It’s easy to see why the
people behind the daffodil appeal are so well respected. A further $5.2 million was granted to those researching life-saving anti-cancer treatments last year, thanks to the generosity of average Kiwis.
The NZCS works closely with hospitals, doctors and other care service providers and has the respect of all within the medical profession. Those who work for Kaipara’s Hospice are no exception.
“They are simply wonderful,” says Hospice spokesperson Annette Olsen. “Working to support families and patients, they are a dedicated team and very supportive. With us, with the hospital and in the wider community, they are doing a great job.”
The daffodil was chosen as the emblem for its annual appeal, symbolising springtime, new life, and hope. It’s been adopted by similar charitable

Action coming on beach driving rules
u by Andy Bryenton
The mayor has ruled out punishing locals with a beach ban on drivers for the Ripiro coast, but he is in line with the thoughts of Baylys, Glinks Gully and Omamari residents, who are calling for better education and enforcement. Matters have come to significant public attention since Matariki, with a presentation at the latest council meeting by coastal resident Paturiri Toautu articulating the feelings of many Ripiro locals. He says that action is necessary but reiterated this week that charges for beach driving were untenable.
“I do not believe in charging fees to access the beach, as it contravenes my beliefs in tikanga Māori,’ he said, differing on this important point while otherwise agreeing with councillors on the need for positive change.
Some opine that troubles began when Muriwai Beach was closed to drivers in 2022. Then-incumbent councillor
of the Kaipara District Council, David Wills, received community support for his proposal to curb the environmental damage of irresponsible drivers on the dunes.
“The Ripiro Working Group was finally formed, and I have recently attended my first meeting of that online as the Glinks Gully representative,” says coastal resident Nicola Puharich.
“The general view is that problem driving, now with the addition of freedom camping issues, has been getting noticeably worse over this period, with nothing effective being done by the authorities.
“As part of the working group, I will be pushing for clearer bylaws around beach driving, driving in the dunes and freedom camping, and then pushing for much more enforcement of these,” says Nicola. “Though we’d be devastated if it happened, we all see another fatality as likely unless urgent action is taken.”
The KDC is already taking action, with Mayor Jepson confirming this
p While many concerned citizens do not want to ban beach driving, all correspondents on this issue agree that the time for action is now, and Mayor Jepson agrees week that a multi-agency approach is being pursued.
“We are very much exploring the options to drive positive change,” said Mr Jepson. “There are many players involved in this. A full audit of the beach is being completed now, and a meeting with all stakeholders is coming in late August.”
Some responses are already decided on. For example, the mayor has stated that new, more visible signage is
coming to demarcate speed zones and communicate proper beach driving rules, including that pedestrians have the right of way at beach entrances.
“There will be monitoring on holidays and long weekends, with a collaborative campaign beginning on Labour Weekend. We are also thinking of using volunteer kaitiaki rangers to help us educate drivers, with backup from the NRC and police,” Mr Jepson said. ¢
