“The Tinopai Volunteer Emergency Services Inc has resource consent for a base that will provide fire and rescue capability to the whole of the North Kaipara,” said president Walter Smith. “We cover right down to Pouto in the event of fire, as well as sea rescue over a wide area.” The emergency services
building will be located on land adjacent to the current marina at Tinopai, at an estimated cost of $160,000 excluding GST. “We expect to have a dedicated coastguard vessel in place from February so we are getting fundraising underway right now. The first event off the rank will be a ‘book and bake’ sale which
will be held at the Paparoa Hall next Saturday, August 20, from 9am to 2pm. There will be over 1,000 books on sale at great prices, as well as a well-stocked cake stall.” A wide range of fundraising activities is planned for coming months, as well as formal moves to secure grants toward the building project.

p The children at Small Pukeko’s Early Childhood Centre in Kaiwaka have been taking care of their animal friends, Sparkle the lamb and Pixie the goat. During this time they have been able to experience feeding and caring for the baby animals. “They have been very excited whilst learning all about what they need and are taking a very strong interest in having their own lamb or goat at home. This is awesome and with the local calf club day coming up we hope to see lots of our children take part in this fantastic opportunity,” said teacher Lauren O’Keefe.

No holding them back u by Ayla Miller
Seven Dargaville based Special Olympic swimmers have brought home 17 medals between them at the recent tier two qualifying round for the Special Olympics nationals.
p The Dargaville branch of the Whangarei Special Olympics swimming team
The team, made up of Andy Daly, Katrina Williams, Eru Patuawa and Jason Hopper from Greenways Trust and Lincoln Coronno, Peter Godfrey and Jason Falwasser from Kaurilands, competed against teams from Auckland to Bay of Islands earlier this month at the Whangarei Aquatic Centre. Team manager and facilitator Roslyn Gilmour says: “The team is a satellite branch of Whangarei although every chance our athletes get they let everyone know they are proud to be Dargavillians. “We have 12 swimmers all up in our Special Olympics team and train every Thursday at the high school under our coach Vicky Holden.” The Whangarei Special Olympics provides a yearly competition at the Aquatic Centre in a variety of Olympic-
type sports for children and adults with an intellectual disability. Dargaville swimming competitor Katrina Williams says she joined the team because she enjoyed being in the water. “It’s a good opportunity to socialise and to get fit,” she says. “Winning the medals means that I know I can do anything I set my mind to,” she says. Roslyn says the team welcome any new swimmers who would like to compete or just keep fit and enjoy the comradeship. “If you would like to become a volunteer and make a positive change in someone’s life and gain a new friend in the process we would like to hear from you too.” ¢
Trounson Park gets top marks u by Ann Morgan
Chris and Jane McComb from the Kauri Coast Top 10 Holiday Park at Trounson Park have won new recognition in the franchise annual awards. Last year they won the supreme award. Ensuring visitors have all the information they need to enjoy their stay at the Kauri Coast was a contributing factor in their winning the Top Service Award this year. The couple bought the two hectare park three years ago and have since set up a steady programme of improvements. “We were very pleased to win this award because it shows we’re doing things right. It’s important for us that everyone who visits here has a really good time. It’s all about the people,” Chris says. “We try to provide them with as much information as possible about the things they can see and do while they’re staying with us. When they leave, we try and ensure that one of us says goodbye and waves them on their way,” Jane said their approach is to help people get the most from their holidays. “The whole essence is that everyone who stays here is our guest and we want to create a memorable experience for them. That’s from the

little things such as our communal herb gardens through to taking our guests on night-time guided walks through the kauri forests where they will hopefully see a kiwi.” Jane is a keen horsewoman and has an international coaching certificate as a riding instructor. In October they will open an equestrian centre to cater for riding holidays, where people can bring their own horses and riding lessons will be available. The centre will have up to four horses available for customers. ¢

Matich’s new beginning u by Ann Morgan
Rhonda Gilligan has purchased Matich’s Premier Restaurant in the main street of Dargaville and says she is excited to be reviving the well-known family business and taking it back to good old fashioned fish and chips. “I am excited to be continuing on with a shop that has been in town for so long,” said Rhonda. “My partner Lloyd passed away recently and it was his life insurance that helped me purchase the business, so technically he bought it for me. My
daughter suggested we put his photo on the wall and then we decided to design a burger in his memory to add a special touch.” Jon Matich has offered to share the family recipe for the famous Matich Savoury Sausage with Rhonda.

“Jon is teaching me how to make the special recipe. I am privileged to be carrying on with the name and we want to have designer burgers where you tell us what fillings you want. Lloyd didn’t like a lot of lettuce so you don’t need to have a lot of lettuce.” Rhonda and her team have been cleaning the premises from top to bottom. She hasn’t changed the decor, the colour of the walls is exactly the colour she wanted. “I walked in and knew this is the shop
for me when I saw the wall colour. It was perfect. I am excited to take on this new opportunity. “We hope to sell wet fish and a steak meal is available. We are open to ideas and I am looking forward to meeting all my new clients.” Matichs Premier Restaurant will be open seven days a week with shorter hours on a Sunday and in summer they will be open later into the evening to accommodate beach and lakes visitors. ¢

Economic innovation
Exhibition in connecting
u by Ayla Miller
A joint art exhibition with Rosina Kamphuis and Ian McGowan called ‘Connections’ can be seen at the Mangawhai Artists Gallery.
The Dargaville Business Forum is holding a series of breakfast workshops in conjunction with Northland Inc in a combined effort to boost local and regional economy. These breakfast workshops will be hosted by Northland Inc’s general manager of business innovation and growth, Joseph Stuart. “Dargaville is important to the regional economy and through these workshops, we’re bringing together knowledge and networks that can increase the strength and connectedness of the business community. Over the process of the workshops I hope we can get into the nitty gritty of how we can use the support available to fund and grow opportunities that will have a strong positive impact on business growth in Kaipara,” he says. Business Forum chair Peter Boyd says the ideal outcome from these workshops are to have businesses able to dramatically expand their businesses and working more effectively for them. “It is key for the business forum to connect with these sorts of organisations. A lot of what we do is growing Dargaville as a good place to do business,” he says. The first workshop ‘Four Key Programmes’ will be an overview of the four key programmes run by Northland Inc to develop business aspiration and reach their full potential. The second ‘Tools and Resources’ will be a more in-depth look at the tools and resources available, that can be accessed for specific research,

Some prior homework for attendees may be required to get the most from this session. These will be held between 7.30– 9.30am at the Northern Wairoa Hotel upstairs in the function room. The first workshop will be held on August 25, the second on September 1 and the third on September 8. Entry for Dargaville Business Forum members is free and non-members $5. ¢
Connections is Rosina’s second major exhibition at the gallery since her arrival to the community in 2015. After her successful joint exhibition show ‘Mindscapes’ in March this year with Ian’s ‘The Sky is Tissue Thin’, they have created a second show, under the same umbrella but with very different interpretations. Celebrating 36 years of country music u by Ayla Miller
Veteran radio show host Phil Godfrey has been in the industry for 36 years and says it is his passion for country music that keeps him going.
p Phil Godfrey (left) and fellow Big River FM presenter Mitch King
Mr Godfrey first became involved in radio in Armidale New South Wales on the station 2ARM FM in 1980. “My passion is country music. They didn’t have a country music programme so I started going into the station and helping out some of the presenters. A spot came up on a folk show and they asked if I could present folk music. I said I can do country but not folk.” They agreed and the then 36-yearold sheep farmer began hosting regular weekly programmes. “I used to record local country musicians and play them on the radio. Through doing that I would take some of these musicians to gigs and they talked me into getting a guitar so I started doing a bit of music and some bush poetry myself. I never dreamt of
being a radio presenter, it was more a means of indulging in my passion for country music.” He stayed at 2ARM FM for 12 years before moving to New Zealand with his kiwi-born wife in 1992 and becoming involved in with Big River FM in its infancy. “Over the years I’ve been able to get to know and interview a lot of the big country music names. They didn’t get a lot of air time in the 90s on commercial radio so when these little community stations started up they used to be quite eager to get themselves heard. It has had its rewards.” Tune in to Mr Godfrey’s show the Weekend Country Muster from 10am until 2pm every Saturday on Big River FM. ¢

Possums for Paparoa
Fishing contest with a difference
u by Ann Morgan
Forget the biggest snapper, kahawai and kingfish, there’s a contest for the biggest mullet in the offing after the successful inaugural Pahihi Fishing and Boating Club Mullet Muster last year.
The eighth annual Paparoa Primary School PTA Possum Purge will be held from Thursday August 25 to Sunday August 28 with prize giving and the gala from 11am–1pm on the Sunday.
p The Paparoa School Possum Purge and gala will have new activities to participate in
p Darren Sheppard smoking batches of mullet after the inaugural contest
August 26–27 is the date for this year’s event, with the challenge to catch the biggest and the fattest fish run under MAF fishing guidelines, with regulation nets, not lines and baits, as the gear of the day. Grey mullet or Mugil cephalus was once a prime species on the Kaipara, initially harvested by local Maori, with canning factories operating in the 19th century supporting many pioneer families and workers. The fish were
sold locally in Auckland and were also exported, before the industry went into decline as other table species — snapper in the main — became more popular as fishing methods improved. The catch in the Pahi contest will be smoked after the weigh-in and prize-giving. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for youngsters up to 15, available on the day or from Maungaturoto Auto Centre. ¢
“Last year over 1,000 possums were caught and $8,000 was raised to improve outdoor learning for the tamariki. The possum fur is plucked and sold to raise funds. It’s a great opportunity to improve our local environment, spend time with friends, and have fun at the gala afterwards,” said principal Alison Cadman. The school also uses the event as a chance to educate the children with a representative from the Northland Regional Council coming to visit, and for adults we have organised some initial training for people who want to hold a gun licence. “The possum purge involves teams of up to four adults at $10 per adult entry — and up to four children per team are free. The teams compete to
bag the most possums for a fantastic range of prizes with no one walking away empty handed. “There is no admission fee for the gala and everyone is welcome to attend and enjoy the food and the fun.” As well as the bouncy castles, face painting and gumboot throwing, this year there are new gala games including Pin the Tail on the Possum and Pot the Pest — a Nerf gun game, and much more. There will also be raffles, a market and craft stalls. Hunting and Fishing in both Dargaville and Whangarei are offering a 10 per cent discount on ammunition for registered teams. For more information about this offer or to register for the event contact Hanna at Paparoa Primary on 09 431 7379 or admin@paparoa.school.nz. ¢

LOCAL BODY ELECTIONS 2016
Seeking the mayoralty
A voice for the Kaipara Jay Tane wants to see the mana restored to his home town and is putting his hand up for councillor of the West Coast Central ward and Mayor of the Kaipara District Council in the local elections. Mr Tane, of Te Roroa iwi, says he was motivated by his passion for the district and the people that live here. “I decided to put my name forward because I want to help people take ownership of their special part of New Zealand and bring that passion out, so the Kaipara District can move forward together. When you get out there and talk to people, you can tell they are proud and passionate about where they come from. This is about bringing that pride forward and showing that.” Mr Tane has worked on his family farm growing up and locally all over p the Kaipara. He says his two key focuses are on encouraging economic development and creating more opportunities for youth. “We need to encourage people who are passionate about their towns to move back and bring with them their expertise.” He believes the Kaipara has so many under utilised assets and says the council need more people that are “not afraid to pick up a spade.” “You can’t moan if you aren’t willing to do anything about it,” he says. Mr Tane has previously volunteered as a

firefighter, coached rugby, and worked with troubled youth but says his desire to be involved with local politics is not about him. “This is about the people of the Kaipara. I want to make small town New Zealand proud again just like the people that live here.” He encourages everyone to get out and vote and take up the opportunity to have their say. “To make a change we need everyone to vote and this is our chance to make a difference.” ¢
“My candidacy boils down to respect for democracy,” says independent candidate for the Kaipara District Council mayoralty, Bruce Rogan, who has served on the council previously, and led the Mangawhai Residents and Ratepayers Association in a long running dispute with council over rates. “True democracy defeats the excesses of corporate power. The counter to the corporates is community empowerment, and my commitment and integrity,” he adds. “Some people say ‘you can’t fight city hall’. I think democracy is our means of change for the better. No council should behave in a way that causes distress for ratepayers. “A defining feature of my candidacy is reviving democracy in this community. Democracy is the basis of our civil society. My great-grandfather, Judge John Rogan the founding judge of the Maori Land Court, who lived in Te Kopuru, passed on to me his legacy of seeking fairness for all through disputes resolution. Our family is proud of its strong historical and ongoing links to the Kaipara. “As mayor I will transform Kaipara into a district that works for its people. I would not have to work alone. Thousands of Kaipara ratepayers want a better deal than they are getting. With the help of the government’s Crown Manager, I
p Bruce Rogan, Kaipara District Council mayoral candidate
will do everything I can to lift the illegal burdens off Kaipara’s ratepayers. I served on council for three years, 20012004, and sounded unheeded warnings about where council was headed. With my knowledge and experience of local government we will learn the lessons from the past rather than simply ignoring them. We will plan for a successful affordable future.” ¢

Breathe easier with home health u by Andy Bryenton
This September, asthma will be in the spotlight as a campaign to raise awareness about this often misunderstood illness hits the news and the streets. But breathing easier — and living better — can often go beyond dealing with the symptoms of dangerous conditions such as asthma. Some of the same triggers for this illness have other effects, and similar remedies. Winter cold and damp have long been associated with sickness — so much so that we still call a common viral infection a ‘cold’. Of course it’s not the chill or even the damp which attacks your body, but tiny viri or bacteria, who are all the more successful in their assault if our immune systems are at a low ebb. Cold and damp have also been implicated as dangerous conditions in poorly maintained housing, and can bring on aches from old injuries — prompting this to be a busy season for professionals such as physiotherapists who work hard to alleviate strains and pains. Wrapping up warm is a good start, but your home needs to be wrapped up too. The combination of insulation to retain warmth, a dry, healthy heating source (such as a heat pump, flued gas fire or enclosed fireplace) and ventilation to expel and repel moisture
is the key here. For those suffering from respiratory illness — of which asthma is but one example — or on a regime of blood thinning medications like Warfarin, maintaining a healthy home is of utmost importance. New technologies, such as ‘asthmaban’ carpets which actively block the triggers of respiratory condition attacks, or advanced filtration systems for air purification, can also aid in creating a healthy home environment. When aches and pains are brought on by winter cold — or whenever illness strikes — medical professionals are there to help. One who has gained a faithful following in Mangawhai is Osteopath Roger Bull, who operates out of Kakariki in the Bennetts complex. John is pleased to be able to offer his skill and expertise to the people of the Kaipara, offering relief from pain — and a lot more besides.

The ULTIMATE fencing tool Using Batten King takes less than one minute per batten or just a few seconds using a staple gun. It is a one man operation saving time and halving labour. The batten is held in place by one wire allowing staples to be applied to the other wires in a nice even manner. It works as a dolly whilst stapling providing a firm, stable surface to hit against while hammering or using a staple gun. Batten King is a safer way to fence because it eliminates the need to physically hold the batten in place while stapling. This eliminates the risk of injury via jarring or accidentally hitting hands with a hammer.

Welcome to Wellsford Mobile clinic commemorates Wellsford woman
The Authentic Taste of India... 2 locations on State Highway 1
u by Ayla Miller
The Te Ha Oranga nursing services are now more mobile than ever with their new mobile nursing van which has been dedicated to Wellsford based Te Ha Oranga health promotion coordinator Lucy Waipouri who died in 2010. Te Ha Oranga is a Ngati Whatua organisation that provides health and wellbeing services to everyone within the Ngati Whatua area. Clinical manager Rhonda Zielinski says they decided to dedicate the van to Lucy as a way of remembering her contribution to the organisation. “Lucy worked for Te Ha Oranga for around 10 years. She organised a lot of activities such as a Rangatahi Maunga Hikoi programme where she would get the youth together and climb mountains in the area. It was all about building the youth up and finding future leaders.” The mobile nursing clinic was born out of the desire to create a clinical space for the out of reach places so nurses can safely and confidentially practise a full range of services. The van will travel to remote areas at least once a week to ensure that everyone has access to essential health services. “It is about accessibility and our nurses being able to deliver safe clinically confidential services,” she says.

With a victory at Le Mans to their credit, the world’s top selling car in their stable and a swag of awards in the trophy cabinet for the ever-popular Ranger utility, one could not fault Ford for enjoying a little of the limelight and taking it easy ahead of a wave of new vehicle releases starting late this year. Before we see the new and improved Kuga SUV — or hear more about the new Ford Edge which is set to replace the Territory in 2017 — there’s unfinished business between the motor giant from Michigan and the town of Dargaville here in the Kaipara. Last year, Ford’s roadshow event brought a range of vehicles to the towns and cities of New Zealand, offering test drives, the chance to win a brand new car, some fun and games and a novel way to raise money for local clubs, sporting teams and community groups. In the Kaipara, Dargaville Ford joined forces with the Northern Wairoa Football Club to pack out those test drive slots, put lots of locals behind the wheel of a Ford, and raise a swag of money for the club. In fact, they did so well

p Ford’s range continues to impress, with groundbreaking concepts such as the small but lively EcoSport offering big surprises
that Dargaville beat all comers to be the most successful Ford Roadshow destination in the land. Now the roadshow is rolling again, with the big transporter trucks loaded up with 2016 models of the Ranger, Everest, Focus and more. It’s time, according to Dargaville Ford chief Lindsay West and his team, for both they and the public to prove our mettle, scoring that number one position again. After all, taking a test drive in one of the Ford fleet is more of a pleasure than a chore — in fact many people last year confessed they had been looking for an excuse to sample what the blue oval brand had on offer. Once again, each of

Get prepared for off-road action u by Andy Bryenton
While many motorists curse the mud, there’s a hardy bunch who love nothing more than slogging through the deepest, most impassable terrain — often getting stuck for the simple pleasure of getting loose again with the aid of winches and land anchors. Experience behind the wheel of such a vehicle comes in handy when listening to a driver’s needs and where they want to navigate. Simply kitting out your regular ute or wagon with lights, bull bars, a winch and big ‘feet’ at home might not reap dividends in the bush. Talk to the experts and compare notes on what works and what doesn’t — it’s likely that there’s an enthusiast out there who has built up the same kind of 4x4 in the past. Your local supplier of off-road parts — such as Area 51 in Dargaville — can offer everything from advice through to a complete refit, but it’s also a great idea to talk to members of off-road clubs or the people who warrant and repair SUVs and utes about your project. ¢
The modern off-roader takes many forms, from ultra-light side-by-side UTV through to custom-worked big boys like the Toyota Land Cruiser, Nissan Patrol and Range Rover. One thing they all share in common is the need for exceptional grip, big contact patches with the ground, and the ability to put as much power as necessary down without simply digging a ditch. Along with the massive travel of off-road vehicles’ suspension, the key to keeping in control comes down to tyres — for example, Mickey Thompson’s range of Baja ‘claw’ rubber, developed in the tough world of off-road endurance racing. With a more aggressive tread pattern and deeply indented side-wall ‘teeth’, tyres like these make a lot of difference when the trail ends and the wilderness begins.

Verberne, Maria
Until we meet again. Those special memories of you will always bring a smile. If only I could have you back for just a little while. Then we could just sit and talk again just like we used to do. You always meant so very much and always will do too. The fact that you’re no longer here will always cause me pain, but you’re forever in my heart until we meet again. Your loving family
