Dargaville duo cycle Ripiro Beach  by Colin Patterson

The 76km ride was undertaken last month at the suggestion of Kaipara District Council which wants to include the beach in the New Zealand Cycle Trail, which — when completed — will provide a dedicated cycle route from Cape Reinga to Bluff. Ms Taylor says she and her brother completed the ride in five hours. “It was a challenging ride with the wind and frequent showers of rain but definitely worth it.” She says that along with the tides, cyclists need to factor in the wind. “If you are cycling against the wind it could take up to three times as long, which would make the cycle hard to finish in one day. Options to get around this would be ensuring you have a support vehicle, choosing to camp along the way or exiting at Glinks Gully rather than Baylys. “The ride is definitely possible to do but weather and tides mean the level of difficulty will change significantly depending on the conditions. Also, if you want to keep your bike in good condition, it will need washing and oiling after the ride, as it will get full of sand, salt and plankton.” The ride also served as a fundraiser for Suzannah and Theo to take part in October’s World Vision Cambodia Cycle Challenge. Ms Taylor says thanks to the support of sponsors she has now more than achieved her $3500 target, although Theo still has a way to go. The Cambodia Challenge is a 10-day cycle

council will then talk with the New Zealand Cycle Trail, the New Zealand Transport Agency and the Far North District Council. “Everything we do needs to be agreed with the NZ Cycle Trail. They pay for signage and marketing, although we’ll install the signs.” 

Young driver mentor project  by Joanne Speechly

An exciting new project aimed at young drivers will be launched in the Kaipara next month. Together with Roadsafe Northland, a local community collective will help learner drivers gain experience and confidence ahead of their restricted licence test. The project will pair new drivers with volunteer mentor drivers for up to 30 hours supervised driving practice. Young and inexperienced drivers are overrepresented in motor vehicle crashes and the newly introduced licence regime is aimed at ensuring that all drivers are capable before they ‘go solo’ on the road. “Many young drivers do not have access to the help of sufficiently experienced drivers to supervise their driving, so this programme will provide that opportunity,” said RoadSafe Northland coordinator, Gillian Archer.

WAG promises a spectacle

5

The Paparoa Wearable Arts Gala has gone from strength to strength since its inception nine years ago, with next weekends event promising new levels of entertainment and spectacle. The theme for the two days of WAG is ‘Carnival’ and in a major break from the past, the event will feature acts from Circus Kumarani. “It’s sure to be a party not to be missed,” says organising committee member, Dennise Brownlie. “Tickets are now on sale and going fast. With pre-judging complete, we are well on the way to a very successful show. “WAG is put together by a committee of nine people, and this year, the services have also been harnessed of professional event organisers along with talented suppliers of sound, lighting and artistic direction to create a spectacle that will have the audience dancing — a show not to be missed.”

Categories for this years entrants include ‘Pacifica’ with entrants advised to ‘sweep around this vast ocean from New Zealand to Japan to the west coasts of North and South America to the countless Pacific islands, a melting pot of cultures and natural beauty — reflect these in your wearable art work.’ Other categories look to the future in 2114 — imagine travelling in a time machine 100 years into the future; ‘Absurdly ridiculous — wayout over-the-top or totally crazy’ and ‘Upcycled, using at least 80% recycled, discarded materials.” There are also special sections for youngsters aged 12 and under, and

Local iwi have imposed a rahui or ban on the taking of shellfish from Ripiro Beach. The rahui is effective immediately and applies from Maunganui Bluff in the north to Tiki Tiki Stream, 2km north of Mahuta. A rahui for the area south of Tiki Tiki Stream is already in effect. Te Houhanga Marae Trust secretary Maria Larsen says marae members met recently with representatives of the community and relevant government departments to discuss the toheroa situation and the issuing of R27A permits. Mrs Larsen said significant concern was expressed at the decline in numbers of toheroa and their small size. “The numbers being taken cannot be sustained. The situation is critical,” she says. The marae decided to implement a rahui with immediate effect. It will remain in place until further notice. All Read the newspaper online

existing permits have been cancelled. She says in recent weeks permits had been issued for 400 to 500 toheroa. “I can’t imagine how anyone can eat that much toheroa.” Because toheroa are considered to be an important traditional food source, the Fisheries Act provides that iwi members may be appointed as Tangata Tiaki or guardians of a resource. In that role they can administer permits to help conserve a resource. Tangata Tiaki may also impose a rahui for up to two years to replenish a depleted resource. Rahui can be extended Mrs Larsen says is it is too early to say how long the Ripiro Beach rahui will last. “It is our moral duty to sustain the beach. Hopefully this rahui will have some effect. 

Justice Heath delivered his final decision on 25 July in the case of the Judicial Review taken by the Mangawhai Ratepayers and Residents Association (MRRA) against the Kaipara District Council. In his rulings, Justice Heath denied the MRRA all but one of the remedies they sought. He turned down the MRRA requests for Council to: • Pay public law compensation to MRRA. • Return millions of dollars of rates set from 2006 to 2013 to ratepayers. • Be prevented from using rates to service Council debt. • Be injuncted (prevented) from collecting outstanding rates while MRRA takes its case to the Court of Appeal. The one request granted to the MRRA by Justice Heath was for Council to pay some of its legal costs. The amount is yet to be quantified but will be a significant sum. Commissioners hope that common sense will now prevail, and that the executive of the MRRA will withdraw their appeal against the rulings of the High Court. No one has won from all this litigation, and no one will win from more attempts to extend this case. The cost to Council, and thus ultimately ratepayers, arising from the action taken by the MRRA, is massive. The costs are in three large chunks. Legal and Court costs: By the time Council pays for some of MRRA’s legal fees, these will likely top $650,000. Council staff costs: I estimate that these are in the order of $250,000, being a substantial portion of the Chief Executive’s time, and additionally senior management time over the last year or so. Costs of servicing debt: While this action hangs over us, the Council is paying a premium for its debt. We estimate this to be close to one percent of debt servicing costs, perhaps as much as $800,000 per year. This adds up to $1.7 million, money and resources that would have been much better focused on the maintenance of roads, reserves and other Council services. There are those supporting the MRRA

legal action who are obsessed with this “battle”. They want Council to be bankrupted. They continue to advocate the non payment of rates, and have not paid any rates for several years. This is simply not fair. When Justice Heath was considering his views on a request by MRRA for an injunction, he noted the inequity that would arise should he grant it. He stated: “I also have concerns about the inequities that would arise between those ratepayers who have withheld payment of historical rates to date and those who have paid them.” He was right to be concerned. It is not fair that some property owners use public services like roads, libraries and parks, yet contribute nothing towards their upkeep or operating costs. No one can change history. We know Council performed poorly. We know it did not comply with the law. Our collective responsibility today is to get the Council back on track. We have had Parliament, as the law makers, help us with this task, and now we have had High Court oversight. Government: Reviewed Kaipara’s history, and appointed Commissioners in 2012 to take over Kaipara’s governance for three years. Parliamentarians: Supported legislation in Parliament in 2013 to deal with some poor Council decision making around rating. The High Court: Considered the case brought by those opposed to what the Government did, what Parliament did, and what the Commissioners are doing, and essentially confirmed that what has been done passes legal tests. We respectfully ask those who run the MRRA to withdraw their appeal. The High Court has ruled. Let’s accept its findings. There is plenty to do in Kaipara to support community development. That is where ratepayer monies should be invested.

Good crowd but few Northland candidates  by Colin Patterson

A Northland electorate candidates’ meeting attracted an audience of more than 70 in Dargaville last week. However, the meeting — which was organised by Kaipara Greypower — lost some of its star power with local MP and National candidate Mike Sabin, Green Party candidate David Clendon, ACT candidate Paul Nelson, Democrat candidate David Wilson and Conservative candidate Melanie Taylor all tendering their apologies. New Zealand First, which is not standing a candidate in Northland, was represented by its party president Anne Martin, while Whangarei candidates Robin Grieve, Paul Doherty and Chris Leitch represented ACT, the Greens and the Democrats respectively. Ken Rintoul from the Focus Party said he hoped to be a voice for the provinces in parliament. But he acknowledged he had an uphill fight. “We’ll struggle but we are not ashamed of what we are doing. It’s time for change.” Labour candidate Willow-Jean Prime said her experience as a Far North district councillor had prepared her well. “I believe I can do

even more for the whole Northland region as your MP.” Answering a question from the audience she defended her party’s opposition to the proposed Puhoi to Wellsford highway. “It’s a huge spend and I’m not convinced it is the best use of money.” Mr Grieve said people should be unshackled from big government so they can follow their dreams. “We need small government because it is assuming roles that were formerly the responsibility of individuals.” Mrs Martin said there was a good reason why the party was not fielding a Northland candidate. “We could not find the quality person that Northland requires.” However, she said New Zealand First was campaigning for the party vote in the electorate. The candidates and par ty representatives then answered questions from the audience. Most opposed deep-sea oil drilling off

The win remains a one-off in the club’s 60 year history. Thirty years on, and former coach and committee member, Allen Dennis and club president, Dharmendra Kumar are organising a reunion to reunite former players, members, sponsors and supporters. The Easter get-together will be held in Dargaville on April 4, 2015. “The team that won were the Northern Wairoa Cameo Lounge and around that time we had two senior teams, both first and second division,” says Allen. “I believe quite a few of those players are still in the area – or have family here – and those we have contacted have shown interest in coming back for the reunion. During the 1985 season, the

team played 21 games and won 17, lost 2 and drew 2 and that included playing in the Stafford Choat, which was a knockout competition. They scored 74 goals and conceded 26.” The Easter reunion take places just ahead of the FIFA under-20 World Cup, which will be hosted by New Zealand next year. Four games will be played in Whangarei, and Allen hopes the reunion will spark interest in the event. ‘‘We are still in the early stages of planning but we would invite anyone who has information on the whereabouts of past players to get in touch.” Allen is also keen to hear from people who have newspaper clippings, photos and other memorabilia from the 1980s. Daffodil Day is a major funding source for the Cancer Society and it also provides an opportunity to raise awareness of cancer. ANZ — and the National Bank previously — has been a principal sponsor for 24 years. “Once again this year, we’ll have a sausage sizzle and we have some major raffles this year,” said ANZ’s Thelma Bagnall. “We have a huge trolley full of groceries, donated by Dargaville Four Square; vouchers to the value of $600; a pamper pack full of exciting goodies; and a cake that has been made by one of our customers and decorated beautifully with daffodils. Individual members from Dargaville Arts Association have also donated work, so now we just need to sell the raffle tickets.” Raffle tickets are available now at Dargaville ANZ and tickets for the grocery raffle are also available from Dargaville Four Square. “We’ve been humbled by the generosity that people have shown us,” adds Thelma.

For those actually afflicted, it has a profound effect. For Northlanders, treatment more often than not revolves around several weeks at oncology and radiation facilities at Auckland Hospital. Immediately there arises the spectre of travel, accommodation and the huge costs thereof, as if you have not enough to think about. But in fact all you need to do, is 'look for the daffodil'. Its symbol graces the entrance to Domain Lodge , a stone's throw from the hospital and the Cancer Society's home away from home for people with cancer who have to travel from Northland for treatment. Its a modern building set in beautiful gardens and with the ambience of a five-

star hotel. The atmosphere is relaxed with friendly and understanding staff and guests are free to come and go as they please. While priority is given to people with cancer, Domain Lodge is also open to the public with income earned from guests helping provide fully subsidised accommodation for people with cancer. And for a taste of five stars, consider this. Domain Lodge offers studio accommodation with either double or twin bedrooms, and each has an ensuite along with Sky TV, telephone, radio, refrigerator and tea/coffeemaking facilities. Other facilities include 24 hour reception, computer and internet, selfservice kitchen/dining areas with full cooking facilities. 

Looking for new design ideas?

The Auckland Home Show returns with confidence for 2014, driven by massive consumer interest in housing, landscaping and renovation. The show is entirely sold out to exhibitors and has been attracting huge interest from home buyers and renovators alike. Of the key exhibitors this year, the SMEG cooking theatre is a must-see. If the kitchen is the heart of every home, then the vibrant heart of the Auckland Home Show is the 1000m2 SMEG and Baumatic area, including live cooking theatre, new appliances and even classic Italian automobiles. Another source of innovative ideas this year is the ‘Space Module’, an installation designed to help visitors look into the future of appliances and home electronics. This year’s exhibit is all about 'The Connected Space', which challenges traditional concepts of a kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. City land shortages have driven many homeowners to consider different ways of living and the ‘The Street of Houses’

Heavy metal swansong  by Andy Bryenton

They weren’t ready for it in 1971. Ford Australia took the XY Falcon and made it the terror of other muscle cars, spawning 300 highly sought after incarnations of the XY Falcon GTHO Phase III. With 351 cubic inches of firepower under the hood from a Cleveland V8, the tyre-shredding Falcon could hit 225 kilometers per hour with the rev limiter scrapped. Allan Moffat piloted one of these machines to victory in the 1971 Bathurst 500, securing it a place in history — along with a reputation for speed which would melt your ‘70’s bell-bottoms. Now the 351 badge has returned, but with a sense of melancholy to tinge the triumph of Ford’s latest offering. The Ford Falcon GT F 351 lives up to and exceeds the benchmark set by its ‘daddy’ in the 1970s, but behind the veil of tyre smoke and that glorious V8 rumble is the knowledge that this is the last masterpiece crafted by the highly skilled auto artists at Ford Performance Vehicles. A look at the figures confirms that this is indeed a product built out of sheer automotive exuberance. That 351 now refers to the power which is churned out by the Falcon’s engine, rather than the amount of cubes displaced. Which means that, despite the comfortable four-door executive saloon looks of the final FPV, this car can move. 351 more accurately translates

 The original 351 Falcon set the benchmark high for performance and style

to over 400 kws, with a neat function called transient overboost engaged. Basically, this overboost gives the supercharged mill a dose of hot chili, unleashing 20 percent extra power for a few (heart stopping) seconds. But only in certain conditions — leading Ford to not include the extra helping of boosted power in its official figure.

Which ever way you slice it, though, that’s a lot of muscle for a modern day muscle car. With claimed 0-100kph times well under 5 seconds, this Ford looks the part, but will often be viewed by other road users only as a dwindling pair of taillights. Seeing one in the wild will be a rarity, as only 500 will ever be made. Your chance to buy one — slim

 2014 sees the end of the line for the FPV badge, but what a way to bow out!

to zero, unless those on the waiting list go mad or bankrupt. This means that FPV’s swansong will also likely become a coveted collector’s piece, which is a bit of a shame. it wasn’t made to sit still in a garage like a museum piece. It was made to drive. Because there is a definite sense, looking at this car in motion, that those

who worked to make it a reality put a lot of heart and soul into what would be their final masterwork. FPv will be no more after the last GT F is made, and the antipodes in general will be a poorer place for that. But if there has to be an end of the story, it’s fitting that it should be so quintessentially brash and engaging. 

to his warrant of fitness process. Now, as business picks up for spring, Rod is set to double or even triple the amount he’s giving away! The best news — many of his hampers have gone to people who really needed that little boost, making this promotion even more welcome. 

DRIVE TO THE CONDITIONS

Even more chances to win when you book your WOF with us!

We draw one hamper per month for a lucky WOF customer. If we issue 150 WOFs in a month, we draw two, 200 we draw three! Be in to win!
