“There’s a choice of the afternoon matinee performance, or the Champagne Gala in the evening,” says WAG’s Lorraine Rowlands. “Both shows are the same and will include a marquee reception, with nibbles, enter tainment and a cash bar. Then the performances begin.” The show will feature weird and wonderful creations that have made the WAG event a magnet since its inception in 2006. Judging and prize giving will follow the evening performance. “Among the entertainers will be the WAG Dance Troupe, under the tutelage of Penny Goodall and they will be introducing the show and three categories, Sci-Fi, Rubbish and Bloomin’ Ridiculous,” Ms Rowland said. “Tickets are selling well and we hope to fill the Paparoa War Memorial Hall and give people a wonderful mid-winter escape. All seven nominees in this year’s Kaipara Citizen of the Year Awards have been recognised for outstanding service to their community.

p The Kaipara District Council’s 2013 Citizens of the Year from left: Josie Naysmith, KDC Chair John Robertson, Jacoba Puharich, Vern Stevens, Jo Yuretich, Judith Langmuir, Sandra Grayson, KDC commissioner Colin Dale and Neville Collins

They were honoured at a ceremony at The Lighthouse conducted by the chair of the Kaipara District Council commissioners, John Robertson and fellow commissioner Colin Dale. Each nominee received a special commemorative lapel pin and a framed certificate plus flowers and a native plant gift at the presentation. The event is now in its 13th year, and Mr Robertson said he was ‘humbled by the achievements’ of those honoured and said the list of service and achievements among the winners was impressive. Neville Collins’ 18 years of community involvement spans working with the Citizens Advice Bureau, the Dargaville Little Theatre, the Dargaville Scouts where he has been treasurer for more than six years, as well as years of work

for numerous other organisations were also recognised. Jacoba Puharich was recognised for her many years work as a social worker with Northland Health, The Dargaville Community Cinema Charitable Trust, Kaipara Abuse Prevention, the Northern Wairoa Patient Advocacy Group, the National Council of Women, and many other local organisations and clubs. Many years of working with sports groups and young people saw Vern Stevens called to accept an award. Vern has coached local rugby, netball and swimming teams, was treasurer of the Southern Rugby Club and President of the Northern Athletic Club, Northern Wairoa Primary School Sports and Dargaville Swimming Club and has been

involved with the Kauri Coast Community Pool since 2005. Jo Yuretich was awarded for her nonstop involvement with the Mangawhai community, through the local Plunket Society, the playgroup and kindergarten, where her fundraising has seen a boost in educational toys and equipment. Along with this Jo is involved with the Mangawhai Domain Committee, and is president of the Friends of Mangawhai Beach School organising numerous fundraising events. Another Mangawhai resident recognised for her tireless youth service was Sandra Grayson. Along with her own five children, Sandra has provided foster care for several young people, is involved with the volunteer fire brigade and was instrumental in the formation of the Mangawhai Army Cadet Unit, which currently has 54 young members under her command. The highly successful cadet unit has been acknowledged by local parents, the Hakaru RSA and NZ Police. Making up a Mangawhai trio was Judith

Langmuir who has spent many years as volunteer librarian for the Mangawhai library, committing many hours of her experience. The gathering heard how Judith is responsible for selection, purchase and bar-coding of all books, is in charge of work rosters, helps with administration and also promotes new library membership. Josie Naysmith, a dedicated supporter of the local RSPCA, has rescued and cared for many cats and dogs and in the process has promoted companionship for the elderly by matching animals with suitable human friends. She has worked for many years promoting animal welfare at school events, and has been responsible for arranging work experience for local young people while assisting in career guidance. Josie has also coached junior rugby, netball and gymnastics and for 23 years has been involved as a dancer and tutor with the Dargaville Dalmation Club’s Kolo dance group. Another highlight of the afternoon was music provided by the Dargaville Tamburica Orchestra. ¢

Community Spotlight

with Alan Wheatley

16 years and still going strong In the David and Goliath world of today’s radio, Goliath usually holds the winning hand, but in Dargaville, there’s a David alive and well in the shape of Big River FM. For 16 years, in good and sometimes quite bad times, the station has been surviving against big-time commercial odds, quietly serving the community at every level. Unlike the Kaipara’s other low powered FM stations, Big River is a licensed community station, which means it’s under government rules and costs, but has to survive on its own. Station Manager Anaru Tana says they receive almost no external funding and rely totally on advertising revenue and community donations.

Big River also provides valuable on-the-job training for interns from the New Zealand School of Radio in Tauranga and usually has two or three on site, learning the ropes before moving on to full time jobs. Anaru says community radio is the hardest of all radio formats to successfully deliver as it is about community service. “We have to provide something for everyone, so we can’t just concentrate on one type of music or programme. We also interact very closely with our audience at all levels

and this defines who and what we are — community radio. “Some criticise our sound, but that is what a station like ours is about. It’s about a variety, things of interest to the community and by nature, that is not always going to be slick, hyped up ads at 100 miles an hour and just one type of music that only appeals to a narrow group. We try to be a little of all things to all people — our people.” And after 16 years, it has to be said Anaru and the team may just have it right. ¢

Te Koporu School looking very smart The approach and entrance to Te Koporu School has had a whole new look thanks to recently completed gardens and surfacing. Principal Lee Anderson says Dargaville landscaper Greg Newman was contracted for the job and along with new concrete paths and car parks, low maintenance native plant gardens especially designed for the climate and often strong westerly prevailing winds were created. “The old approaches were cracked and broken, quite hazardous and just not attractive at all, so we asked Greg to come up with a design and we are delighted with the finished product.”

Lee says the security fencing now being installed is the final touch to the $60,000 plus project, but adds it is money very well spent as the whole school looks so much smarter and welcoming. Meanwhile — students are working hard towards their end of term stage production, “Haki and the Kumara Vine” which has more than a nod to Jack and the Beanstalk, but with a distinctly local interpretation and promises to be a lot of fun. Produced by Matua Pere, the show will involve the

Fishing quota cut ‘disaster’  by Alan Wheatley

Public apathy and disinterest over changes to fishing quotas could have a serious long-term impact on the Kaipara coast and time is running out. That’s the view of long-time Kaipara identity and harbour warden, Des Subritzky, who says despite placatory comments from politicians, the changes could still happen, and adds that those opposed to it only have until this Friday to make their voices heard. Under the proposed changes, catch limits in snapper fishery one from East Cape to Cape Reinga, could be reduced from nine, to three or four, which Des says will see a massive influx of recreational fishers to the Kaipara, and the impact will be disastrous. “There is no doubt the impact on the Kaipara coast will be immense. More than 90 per cent of all juvenile snapper on the west coast of the north island come out of the Kaipara Harbour and irreparable damage will be done very quickly if these changes go ahead, as fishers will come over here in huge numbers.” Des says what will also happen is that catch limits here will then have to be reduced as a result and that will impact everyone. “And that will happen fairly quickly because the impact of big numbers of fish being taken by ever increasing numbers of recreational fishers will be immediate.” Des has a simple message to anyone who is concerned over the proposals becoming law. “Put in a submission. It doesn’t need to be a huge document, just a few lines will do, but if everyone

A win for Northpower Kaipara — along with a little help from Whangarei — has beaten out the rest of the country in the electricity supply stakes. Northpower has been voted Lines Company of the Year at an awards presentation in Auckland. The company behind the awards, Freeman Media said it was “all-around excellence in the past year that saw it take out this award, with the judges particularly commending its focus on cost control and delivery. Highlights include higher operating earnings; a huge improvement in system reliability, significant gains made by the company’s contracting arm, and the success of the company’s fibre rollout.” “Northpower is owned by the Northpower Electric Power Trust on behalf of its consumers and the award comes on the back of one of the most successful years on record,” said chief executive, Mark Gatland. “A result like this starts with our men and women out in the field working in stormy weather in the middle of the night, helping out the

people who are ultimately our owners in Kaipara and Whangarei.” “So from our lines crews in the field to all of our support staff, the people managing and planning our network, to the managers in the company, our board of directors and our trustees — everyone deserves credit because they all play a part. I am grateful for the leadership shown at all of those levels of the business.” Northpower network general manager Graham Dawson says the accolade is “immensely pleasing. “Because we are consumer-owned, we believe the best way to give a valuable commercial outcome for our consumers is to keep prices low and run our network as efficiently as possible.” In the financial year ended March 31, it made a profit of $11.3 million (up 17% on the previous year). Since 1993, over $174 million has been paid in line holidays and distributions to its consumers.

The ferns were gathered by Mary Ariell, a member of the pioneering farming family after whom a hill is named between Paparoa and Maungaturoto. ”Among the pressings is a king fern, the 'para' after which the Kaipara is named,” said museum CEO Bet Nelley. “Doug raises ferns and takes them to the Mangawhai markets. So I knew he would be interested.” Mr Shaw, who is a consulting analytical chemist, said the presence of

the king fern was confirmation it once ranged widely over the Kaipara. “But it was a valuable food source for Maori, and then later, it would have been devastated by wild pigs, so it has largely disappeared. I have a theory that it might still survive around the Brynderwyns but it's only a theory. I'd certainly be interested to hear of any.” The king fern still flourishes in some parts of it's range from Taranaki into Northland, and it lives on too in the Kaipara, from Mr Shaw's nursery. ¢

Individuals will appear before the committee in groups of three. Please contact the secretariat by email, or at the phone number below, as soon as possible if you wish to be grouped with friends or colleagues who are also appearing before the committee as individuals.” Ms Yeabsley said most organisations that have submitted and wish to appear before the committee will have 10 minutes to speak. “Please note that standing orders provide the committee with the power to exclude from its proceedings any evidence or statement that it considers irrelevant to its proceedings, offensive or possibly defamatory.” The brevity and location of the hearings has been slammed by the chair of the Mangawhai Residents and Ratepayers Association, Bruce Rogan, who says “hundreds, if not thousands of ratepayers will not be heard. “It now transpires that the committee will spend one day in the district listening to the public’s views and it will do that only in Maungaturoto.” Deputy chair of the Kaipara Citizens and Ratepayers Association, John

Edwards, said the Kaipara District Council “took a number of years to create the mess. “Thousands of ratepayers have been affected by past mistakes and the current rate increases of 40% and more. Yet the LGEC will allow a few hours to decide our future — one meeting and 100 days to report back to their boss. “It would be at least seen to be fair if there were meetings in Dargaville, Mangawhai and Maungaturoto to allow some of our biggest ratepayers to attend. I guess you can't expect city folk to understand the beginning of spring in the country.” ¢

Grand get-together for fans of this favourite The Ford Ranger has always been a favourite of rural Kiwis — it’s tough, affordable, designed with our sometimes difficult driving conditions in mind, and its displayed, over time, the ability to fit into nearly any role New Zealand drivers find for it. The sight of the blue oval badge on the front of a farmer’s ute carrying fertiliser or fence posts is just as common as the sight of a Ranger kitted out to carry a builder’s ladders or a plumber’s pipes — or, for that matter, a brace of fishing rods or surfboards. Ranger utes have been a big seller here in Dargaville, thanks in part to the dedication of local dealership Dargaville

Ford. Now Lindsay West and his team are celebrating not just the swag of awards which the Ranger has won (including top honours as New Zealand’s best ute of the year), but the people who work and play with the popular machines. They’re organising a ‘Ranger Reunion’, an event which is the first of its kind, and which has received a positive response from Ford New Zealand as well

as the numerous Ranger owners in the Kaipara. There are more than a few of them out there. Lindsay’s records show that more than 88 of the versatile utes have hit the roads in the past couple of years, off his lot alone. Each and every owner will soon receive a personal invitation to attend an afternoon and evening dedicated to the Ranger, featuring complimentary drinks and refreshments. It’s also a great chance to swap Ranger stories, pick up hints and tips, and check out all the news accessories, add-ons and gadgets which the global motoring industry has developed just for the Ranger. For example, Gas and Tyre Services will be on site with a range of top-class Mickey Thompson tyres, acclaimed as the world’s best for trucks of this kind, as well as the hottest new

styles in mag wheels. Those who have been looking at new ute options are encouraged to come along to learn all about the Ranger from real drivers and owners, and afterwards the conveniently located Northern Wairoa Hotel is providing a hearty roast dinner for patrons at a special reduced price. Join Lindsay and the Ranger owners of the Kaipara in celebrating this popular and versatile ‘future classic’ on the 13th of September at Dargaville Ford — we’ll see you there! ¢

Bold new lineup confirmed for Ford There are big changes afoot at a global level for automotive giant Ford, with the next phase of their very successful ‘world car’ programme kicking into high gear. For motorists here in New Zealand it does indeed mean the eventual end of production for the venerable Falcon badge, but it also means a wider range of vehicles to come, including some hotly anticipated new arrivals. There has been a lot of talk about the arrival of the Mustang on our shores, not as an American import, but as a staple of Ford dealers’ forecourts. But even more exciting is the announcement of a new, seven seater SUV based on the Ford Ranger platform — an exciting beast indeed, bearing the very Kiwi name of ‘Everest’. With the proven underpinnings of the Ranger and an

interior which will challenge the cruising luxury of marques like Range Rover, this go-anywhere machine is sure to make waves in the auto world. Also coming soon is the Everest’s ‘little brother’, the EcoSport, a compact SUV which promises off road thrills with a lower environmental footprint, and an affordable price. The feisty Fiesta ST is soon to drive off the wharf and into town as well, followed by the Fiesta EcoBoost, equipped with a surprisingly peppy 1 litre engine, rendering unheard of levels of fuel economy, both city and highway. ¢ HISTORIC

Classics cruising to the Kaipara again The Maungaturoto Hotel is no stranger to old-time nostalgia — the whole building is a Kaipara classic, with a storied past and a new, restored look thanks to its new management. So it’s fitting that this local landmark is the backdrop to the Kaipara’s biggest celebration of classic cars and hotrods, bikes and choppers on the 25th of September — and it’s all for a good cause, too. The town of Maungaturoto will come alive to the rumble of V8s and big motorcycle v-twin engines for the second annual Maungaturoto Hotel car show, but it’s also a chance for the community to look forward to another forthcoming milestone — the 150th anniversary of the town’s founding. A gold coin donation taken up during the course of the day (which begins with breakfast at 7.30am and runs into the night with live music and celebrations) will all go toward making the sesquicentennial a time to remember. As for the car show itself, petrolheads are sure to be treated to a delicious display of chrome and custom paint, wickedly modified hotrods, immaculate original classics, the best of British and European exotics, and of course all those bobbed, chopped and wildly painted bikes and trikes! For the kids there will be a bouncy castle, and for everyone there will be hot food, cold drinks and rockin’ good tunes, along with the chance to power

p This immaculate Oldsmobile will be on display

through a hot lap or two of Bathurst, thanks to local motorsport enthusiast Ken Subritzky’s life-sized V8 supercar simulator machine. Last year’s show was so mammoth that several of the classics which cruised in had to be accommodated over the street, so this time the Maungaturoto Hotel staff have prepared a whole new area for display, able to accommodate even more classic steel and chrome. If you’re a fan of the classics — from the era of 70s’ muscle, the fins and flare of the 50s, or the wild custom paint of pioneers like Ed ‘Big Daddy’ Roth and Von Dutch, this is the place to be on the 25th. Mark it on your garage calendar and don’t forget to bring your own pimped-out ride to join in the fun! ¢

The future of motoring arrives in Whangarei It’s a new landmark for Whangarei — one which stands out just as impressively as the recently opened Te Matau a Pohe bridge, or the home of the mighty Taniwha at Toll Stadium.

Pacific Motor Group’s new headquarters forms a major part of the Porowini Ave ‘car zone’, a motoring mecca which rivals Auckland’s Green Lane for its wealth of choice across marques, makes and models. Pacific Motor Group can proudly claim to have been ‘driving Northland for 100 years’, but their new premises are a step into the future, providing a thoroughly modern showcase for the latest in automotive technology. From long-established brands such as Ford and Mazda through to the American

muscle of Dodge and Chrysler and the cutting-edge Italian design of Alfa Romeo and Fiat, the new Porowini Ave ‘mega centre’ is officially Northland’s largest, with a staggering range of models under not one roof but two. As well as those already mentioned, customers can browse the latest offerings from big names like Jeep, Suzuki and Mitsubishi, as well as Suzuki motorcycles. All of this choice is backed up by a great team — both the knowledgeable sales staff and a ‘behind the scenes’ elite service team who are fully qualified

and equipped to keep your new vehicle running at peak efficiency. And while the sheer number of cars, utes, vans and SUVs may seem like a lot to take in, this new site is all about the ability to make comparisons, weigh up options and make the right decision for your new automotive investment. The Pacific Motor Group team invite you to come and take a look at the range on offer; take some time, test drive some favourites and talk to the specialists across their record number of brands.

From the practical popularity of the Mitsubishi Mirage, through the presence and power of the Chrysler 300c SRT 8, to the work of art which is the Alfa Romeo Giulietta, you’ll find lots to talk about! In fact, the range of vehicles on show is far too large to list here, or even to snap in a single photograph. The best way to appreciate the scale and scope of Pacific Motor group’s bold new undertaking is to pay them a visit soon, taking in Whangarei’s latest automotive landmark first hand. ¢

The perfect showcase for a stunning lineup Northland Toyota’s new Porowini Ave address isn’t just a stylish piece of real estate — it’s designed to be the showcase for a lineup which many are calling the Japanese automaker’s strongest ever. The new building is part of Whangarei’s new automotive hub, situated just across the road from the premises of Pacific Motor Group. But in this case having a range of competing marques nearby is a great thing; Porowini Ave is shaping up as a destination for those who want to browse through a wide range of vehicles, and Toyota’s offering is sure to excite a whole lot of interest. A quick look at the range of vehicles on display shows why so much care and attention has gone into making the new Northland Toyota site so light, bright, and welcoming. Highly-polished examples of 2013’s flagship Land Cruiser, 86 and Corolla models gleam under the lights, displayed on an expanse of white tiles which make the space seem ultra-modern. One is almost put in mind of an art gallery — though the works on display here are not only more technical and practical than a Picasso or a Rembrandt, they are also considerably more affordable! With the growth of the Toyota brand, and the ongoing popularity of big-name vehicles such as the Prius hybrid, the RAV4 and the Highlander, the time was right for a move from Northland Toyota’s old premises near the town basin. The new ‘home base’ for Toyota encompasses a spacious yard, full service and workshop facilities, and

the latest technology to help customers easily explore their options within the framework of the brand. From design to reality, the new Northland Toyota building has been designed as a fitting backdrop for what Toyota’s engineers — and the international motoring press — have earmarked

as one of the strongest ever lineups on offer from the Japanese auto giant. The ability to view, test drive and talk to a well-informed and helpful sales team is made all the better in fresh new surroundings, right in the heart of Whangarei’s new automotive district. ¢

Maverick monsters the Baja 500 A good Samaritan pit-stop to help out crashed fellow racers snatched the gold from Desert Toyz racer Cory Sappington’s grasp, but just finishing the Baja 500 is an achievement. The Baja 500 is regarded as one of the most dangerous, grueling and potentially deadly races in the world — a high-speed thrash through desert, rocks and sand which has claimed many victims in the form of mangled wrecks. The unforgiving terrain is far from asphalt roads, and the power and speed required to win are matched only by the guts and skill of drivers such as the legendary Mickey Thompson who have become Baja legends. This year saw a field of UTV side by side vehicles set off into the desert, but most of this pack suffered catastrophic breakdowns and crashes along the way. Negotiating his way through the hazards to a podium finish, Sappington, racing in a modified Can Am Maverick

1000cc UTV, made second place in his class, narrowly missing the gold due to two punctures, and a stop to offer aid to fellow Maverick drivers of the Murray Racing / Del Amo Motorsport team. For a while there the Murray / Del Amo machine had enjoyed a commanding 30 minute lead, but a high-speed crash on a tricky ravine section put them out of contention, and indeed out of the race entirely. Cory had to use ingenuity during the race, repairing his own fuel pump cooling system and heat deflector on the fly to finish. But many, many hot and dry miles later he claimed a podium finish, beating strong competition which included the Monster Energy team’s own Can-Am Maverick 1000, as well as numerous p With minimal modifications from stock, Cory Sappington’s Maverick 1000 scored a podium finish in this year’s demanding Baja 500 desert race — beating opponents across many vehicle classes

cylinder Rotax engine feels like it has the power of a four cylinder. With no prerunning, no power steering, essentially all stock Can-Am components and a rookie chase team we have beaten Baja! At the finish I was numb from driving all 500 miles in 20 hours.” ¢

Sn MAINTENANCE

Time to tame the backyard wilderness The days are growing longer, the sun is shining more frequently, and Mother Nature is about to kick plant growth into high gear for another Spring season of riotous profusion. While many will be content to sit back and watch the flowers bloom, for most of us this means it’s time to dust off the lawn mower, hedge trimmer and chainsaw, and dive into all those jobs which have been ‘delayed’ over the winter months. When it comes to expert advice on equipment maintenance, as well as some powerful new tools to tame the wild, we’re well serviced here in Dargaville. And if the thought of tackling

those larger jobs alone seems rather daunting, it’s good to know that we also have at our disposal the skills (and heavy duty machinery!) of professionals who can show the backyard jungle who’s boss. If you’re intent on getting your yard in order, make sure that all of your outdoor power equipment is oiled, sharp and working smoothly. Don’t neglect the safety instructions which the manufacturer specifies, especially when

dealing with chainsaws and mowers — if in doubt, get someone who knows these machines to check it out. And if the task at hand is really too big for your own mower or weed eater, you may be surprised to find out how affordable it is to get your weekend back and leave the task to the experts! ¢

Learning from trees

O B I TUARY

Senior Constable Jim Corbett

Students at Kaiwaka School kicked off a long-term environmental project recently when they spent time planting a large assortment of trees, shrubs and other plants around the school grounds.

Especially well remembered in Dargaville and Ruawai, Senior Constable James John (Jim) Corbett passed away peacefully in Nelson on the 12th August.

The tree and plants were donated by the Te Uri o Hau Settlement Trust as part of their on-going Cultural Education Trail and Marae Biodiversity Project to involve Kaipara primary and secondary schools. Kaiwaka School Principal Rosemarie Ellis said students really enjoyed digging, planting and nurturing the plants which she said would enhance the school community for many years to come. She added it was a Whanau group project, led by Whaea Mina Paikea and Matua Luke Connelly. “Some of the p Kaiwaka School students Teina, Max, Gareth and Breez get amongst the planting at the recent beautification and learning day students have parents and grandparents that planted trees when delighted to be involved with Kaiwaka School and they were very young and at the school, and said he really enjoyed sharing in the students’ fun so students now want to be able to say that and learning. they planted this tree or that shrub when they “We also want to involve students at all levels are grown up. It will be a long term learning but in biodiversity management and awareness, very rewarding experience.” especially around Marae and cultural heritage Te Uri o Hau Settlement Trust Cultural sites waterways and catchment areas, and so our Education Trail and Marae Biodiversity Project programme is a wide learning experience with long Leader, Mikaera Miru said the Trust was term benefits.” ¢

He was aged 87 years. Jim was born at Turua near Thames but was brought up on a farm in Kio Kio in the King Country, a few kilometres out of Otorohanga. Newly weds Jim and Alice Corbett were sent to Dargaville in 1952 where it was a time of only a few police cars and the town was usually patrolled on foot. The couple stayed on to live in Northland for more than twenty-five years From Dargaville they shifted thirty kilometres south in 1960 to the sole charge Ruawai station and became part of that community for nine years. Their son, Jack (Chris) Corbett, recalls that when not catching criminals, “Dad was a keen fisherman and spent time, often with Dargaville Hospital Superintendent Dr. Bill Crisp and Tikinui man Tony Erceg, catching snapper down at Pouto on the Kaipara Harbour.” It was Jim Corbett who discovered the bodies in a vineyard cottage after a triple murder at Toka Toka in 1965. From Ruawai, Constable Corbett transferred to Kaikohe Station to spend a further nine years before being posted to Auckland, from where he retired in 1985. Of their family of four boys and a daughter, all were born in Te Kopuru except the youngest son born in Paparoa. Since retirement Jim and Alice have lived variously in Kaikohe, Orewa and Auckland, shifting to Nelson four years ago. A private funeral service was held last Thursday in Nelson. ¢
