Aranga School is one of many schools who take part in the Duffy Books in Homes programme, which provides free books to more than 100,000 New Zealand children, three times a year. “The book would be very much valued as the school continues on its learning journey within the term three school-wide theme of discovery,” said principal, Todd Warmington. Aranga School is still looking for a sponsor to help them continue to take part in this programme.

Matakohe bridges progressing A temporary bridge now spans the Matakohe River as work progresses on the realignment of State Highway 12, and the structure will be used to build the permanent No 2 Bridge, which will start to take shape over coming months.

p The eastern end of the Matakohe bridges and highway realignment project

The contractors advise that following a minor redesign of Bridge No 1 over Parerau Stream works are underway again with the construction of the western abutment. “We plan to complete this work by late September when the concrete beams will be transported to site from Auckland,” a spokesman said. “These will be lifted into position with a 400t mobile crane. Delivery of beams for Bridge No 2 is due to begin mid-October. “Having a limestone quarry on-site and being able to use this has helped the team to carry out limited winter earthworks to date and this work will continue throughout the winter. These limited earthworks are approved and regularly audited by the Northland Regional Council. Earthworks and

drainage works at the western end of the realignment will help make an early start on laying the road surface when summer arrives. “The realignment crosses the existing state highway in two places, and this means that temporary traffic switches will be required as we build the new road over summer. “There will be speed reductions in place, and there will be sections of unsealed road. Traffic will also be moved onto the new alignment. “Planning and design to ease the corners of both the current SH12/ Matakohe East Road/Barlow Lane intersection and the SH12/Ararua Road intersection are progressing well, and we are continuing to work closely with Kaipara District Council.” ¢

Northpower releases future plan Nor thpower Limited connected 338 new homes to its electricity network in the Kaipara in the 2018 financial year, and strong connection growth is expected to continue. Mr McLeod believes another critical boost to Northland is the expansion of the Nor thpower Fibre network. “This is an initiative we have been progressing with, and our crews are doing a great job connecting our regions to fibre,” he said. The Kaipara District is the biggest beneficiary of the expansion, giving around 6,000 homes access to the faster broadband network upon completion, which is expected in p Northpower Limited chief executive, Andrew McLeod 2021. Rallying together

The best of times, the worst of times … u by Matt King, Member of Parliament for Northland

Two Kaipara Lifestyler stories recently caught my attention and the attention of much of New Zealand. Both stories were similar in that they occurred on a beach and they involved animals. Nevertheless, each produced in me a vastly different reaction.

p First Dargaville Girls Brigade received a generous donation raised during the inaugural Dargaville Motorcycle Rally as part of The Winterless North Ride organised by Glenn Sheppard. “We were over the moon, and very thankful. They [the rally participants] had a fantastic day, and [the Northern Wairoa Hotel publican] Darryl Wilson put on an awesome evening,” said Girls Brigade coordinator, Pauline Taylor.

Mayor’s Memo

Pay attention!

• Citizens Awards nominations close at the end of August, so now’s your last chance to nominate a hard-working volunteer or citizen who makes a great contribution to life in Kaipara. Remember that, as perfectly described in the Maori whakatauki, the kumara doesn’t talk of its own sweetness – so you’ll have to do the nominating for them. Sweet as! Finally, I was really proud of the strong Kaipara volunteer spirit to help save the two whales on Ripiro Beach. Sadly the forces of nature were against us and the whales could not be saved; not this miracle, not this time. pic.twitter.com/ GYLkT7ZAjO . Still, the compassion, concern and commitment of so many was just the right kind of ‘ordinary Kaipara-ness’ for this extraordinary event, and I couldn’t be more proud.

Still on the subject of rates, on this week’s Council agenda is the six-monthly report of Crown Manager Peter Winder who’s been defending for us the principle that all rates should be paid. As you may be aware, on 6 August the Supreme Court ended any further appeals on one of two remaining pieces of rates litigation involving KDC. This means the definitive legal judgment from our courts is that both Kaipara District Council and Northland Regional Council rates and penalties are valid and must be paid. I look forward to the small number of ratepayers who still have outstanding rates and penalties dating as far back as the 2011/12 year paying up what they owe and allowing us all to focus on the future.

• Representation Review public drop-in sessions have been attended by more than 100 community members so far, most of whom say ‘it makes sense’. The final drop-in will be at Kaiwaka at 12-1pm on Tuesday 28 August, but the information on proposed Council representation changes (including new ward for Kaiwaka-Mangawhai) is on www.kaipara. govt.nz website. Have your say!

Hi

More commonly, callers have building consent questions or seek explanation about matters such as their new rates notices which were sent out at the end of July. There’s a degree of confusion in some parts of the community about how a 4.97% KDC average rate increase can translate into what could be a 25% increase in someone’s rates payable. Simply, there are different components of your total rates bill, some of which are decided by KDC (that’s the 4.97% part) and some which KDC neither controls nor influences: Northland Regional Council uses KDC as collection agent for its rates; every three years council must undertake a valuation of all properties. Changes in land value can and do have an effect on your total rates invoice. Quotable Value’s technical calculation has shown significant increases in some areas of the district. In future, as valuations shift then expect changes which will, again, be beyond KDC’s control. Remember, your rates bill may be changed more by technical than political decisions.

Two last chance opportunities for you coming up soon:

ate

Phone lines to Council have been running hot this month. Firstly, to our surprise and delight callers have taken the time to give praise for recent grading and heavy-metalling work on the local road network. Thank you for the encouragement and noticing improvements are starting to show. By all accounts such calls to Kaipara District Council are as rare as hens’ teeth.

Fresh breezes across Kaipara District are blowing away some of the cobwebs of the past. Green shoots for spring, maybe?

it also involved the death of animals: a stranded humpback whale and her calf. As the story unfolded, I am afraid we all feared for the worst, and that is what we saw: first the calf and then the mother. Out there on that usually deserted beach, we saw something else — we saw the good in us. We saw it in the dozens of volunteers who turned out and worked tirelessly to help. These weren’t DOC staff, though they were there and did a tremendous job, these were just people like you and me, of all ages and walks of life who saw a need and tried to meet that need with selfless compassion. There is good and bad in all of us, and I read about both in the Kaipara Lifestyler. Fortunately, the good, as usual, vastly outweighed the bad. Matt

St

The first story (Kaipara Lifestyler, July 31) was of a young female leopard seal discovered on a beach near Glinks Gully. On the day it was found, it was healthy, alive and not doing anyone any harm. A day later, it was dead; shot, supposedly deliberately. I read that with revulsion: who would do such a thing, and why? There was nothing to be gained from such an act except some perverse pleasure that most other New Zealanders and I would find hard to fathom. The second story (Kaipara Lifestyler, August 7) is similar and similarly sad. However, it was also uplifting and my response to this second story was vastly different from the first. This story also occurred on a beach — Ripiro — just a few kilometres up the coast from Glinks Gully. Sadly, tragically,

Photos capturing the essence of the mighty Kauri of Northland were celebrated at the Northland Photography Awards.

Time is running out to nominate a citizen who has shown dedication to the community for the annual Citizen’s Awards. The awards, run by the Kaipara District Council, are to recognise citizens for services to the community. “The citizens are awarded for recognition of substantial service, usually of a voluntary nature or beyond normal employment, benefitting Kaipara and its people. Judge, Stephen Davies, was impressed with the variety of interpretations of this theme. “It was good to see a development in the thinking of the entrants, especially in the student sections. The winners in each section created well-composed, compelling images that made good use of the available light.” The awards form part of the Kauri Museum’s ongoing support of the programme to ‘Keep Kauri Standing’ and stop the spread of Kauri dieback. This year was the theme of Kauri Connections — an exploration of how these mighty trees influence our way of

life, aimed to highlight the importance and diversity of kauri through the modern camera lens. Third place in the junior category went to Cooper Hill, Leia Hill came second with Matthew Parsons taking out first place. Chloe Smith won merit and second place in the senior category, Aaron Skelton won merit, and first place went to Corin Parsons. Jemma Douglas won both first and second place in the open adult category. The finalist’s works are on display at a special exhibition held within The Kauri Museum until October 7. ¢

Ticket to success

OBITUARY

u by Ayla Miller

Whilst being involved in amateur theatre Reece Preston, a former Ruawai boy, saw first-hand the hurdles faced when selling and marketing smaller productions. With a background in computing systems, Reece and his business partner Phil Jobbins put their heads together and created one of New Zealand’s first online ticketing services — iTicket. “We bought a second-hand printer and gave it a go. I was already doing web development work, so I had a little office to work out of and continued to work on iTicket after hours and on weekends whilst doing my day job.” In 2004 Reece and his business partner Phil Jobbins launched iTicket originally focussing on smaller theatres. Since then the company has remained fully New Zealand-owned and operated and has grown to include a range of events such as food and beverage festivals, music and sports events as well as activities and nightlife. DAFFODIL DAY

Aviation hero flying high Dargaville Aero Club veteran chief flight officer Murray Foster, known for his cheeky sense of humour and his inexhaustible love for flying, passed away on Saturday, July 28, aged 84. A large group of family, friends and flying enthusiasts gathered at the Dargaville Baptist Church on Friday, August 3 to farewell Murray before meeting at the Dargaville Aero Club for his final flight inspection and a fly-by. For the majority of his retirement, Murray spent most of his waking hours at the aero club, doing everything from flight instruction, theory, overseeing exams, mowing the runway or just catching up with people. “He had a passion for flying and wanted everyone else to have the same. Before his retirement, he ran night classes and was still down at the club every weekend. Just over a year ago Murray retired from the committee after giving 40 years of sterling service, holding several different offices. In fact, Murray was still checking exam papers while he was in hospital and giving instructions to the committee,” said club president, Peter Randall. Murray was well known throughout the New Zealand aviation community and had been awarded a plaque by the Royal New Zealand Club for services to aviation. “Murray had a wicked sense of humour

with his tongue-in-cheek comments. If you hadn’t been at the aero club at the weekend because of a touch of flu or something you were likely to get a phone call ‘Is that ward four and how is the patient?’ Royal New Zealand Airforce flight lieutenant, Michael Williams, wrote of the integral part Murray played in getting his flying career off the ground. “As an aviation-mad Dargaville youth in the 1990s, it was inevitable that I was soon the recipient of Murray’s calm, encouraging nature. “Murray was the epitome of what is required in the aviation industry today. We are right now experiencing the effects of a pilot shortage, with young adults having available to them an immeasurable number of career options for those with the drive to achieve. Likewise, those without the drive to achieve are presented with options to sustain themselves. “With high school completed and money saved, I moved on from Dargaville in pursuit of my aviation goals. Murray, you gave direction to more people than you probably realised. You made a difference. Tailwinds.”

Gnome job too big or too small

Beach driving speed u by Jill Dickie

In recent weeks several incidents have occurred on Ripiro Beach involving visiting seals, creating concern from the local community, Leopardseals.org and Department of Conservation staff. During the last two weeks, a young fur seal was run over, another mauled by a dog and several sightings have resulted in reports of resting seal pups being approached and harassed by members of the public and their dogs. While driving in the direction of Mahuta local resident, Emily Walker, spotted a seal pup returning to the water. On the return trip, she discovered it had been injured and took it to DOC staff at the whale rescue site. “You could see him clearly — we were in a four-wheel drive, and only a blind person or someone speeding would have missed seeing him,” she said. The DOC staff member also mentioned the mauling of a seal by a dog the day before. The legal speed limit on Ripiro Beach

is 100km/h, and drivers need to be aware of seals coming ashore at this time of year. The limit is 30km/h at Baylys entrance extending approximately 1,000m north and south, and 30km/h at Glinks Gully entrance extending 1,000m north and 1,100m south. “Seals are a protected species that regularly haul out on our shores. Often people will pick up these animals thinking they are sick or injured — but quite often this is not the case. Seals are incredibly resilient and often just need to be left alone. They also can carry a lot of diseases including tuberculosis. If you do find a seal that is seriously injured, entangled in debris or being harassed by people or dogs, please contact 0800 362 468,” said DOC volunteer and research assistant at leopardseals.org, Brittany Mathias.

Dargaville Menz Shed is offering a solution to a problem that affects many with their new gnome refurbishment service.

p Dargaville Menz Shed volunteers Dave Webb and Barry Jones with some of their wares

Menz shed spokesman, Barry Jones, says many gnomes are left forgotten in gardens or sheds and slowly lose their colour and jovial appearance. “These gnomes can be delivered to the menz shed by the Parenga Street car park behind McKay’s Electrical in Dargaville any Saturday from 10am– 2pm.” Menz sheds have been popping up in many New Zealand towns and provide a space for male comradeship, shared work skills and occupational therapy. “It keeps us off the streets and out of our partners’ hair.”

Volunteer, Barry Jones, said being part of the club also has many positive mental health benefits. The Dargaville Menz Shed are working on projects including furniture repair for Hospice, DIY jobs for members and making things to sell — such as trolleys for children, pot plant stands, picnic tables and garden ornaments. Money raised from the sale of these items will go towards a building fund for a new workshop. To contact Dargaville Menz Shed call Brian on 09 439 6175 or Paul on 09 974 7685. ¢

Disappointment over illegal dumping

The Maungaturoto Community Charitable Trust is continuing its fundraising programme for the planned dementia unit at Riverview Rest Home with a calf rearing scheme for children. As the traditional, rear a calf for pet day programme is unavailable due to Mycoplasma bovis infection restrictions, the fundraising committee has instigated a new, video calves for pet day plan. Children will raise their calf and video various stages of its growth, care and handling and submit the video for pet day judging on October 19. Calves are donated by local farmers, and several stock food supply companies have provided milk powder and grain for the scheme. After pet day, the calves will be either purchased by the respective families or handed to the trust, which will graze them until ready for sale. Funds from the sales will be forwarded to the dementia unit fundraiser. The hole, on Spur Road south of Te Kopuru, is on an historic site that once served as a church and cookhouse for the local Dalmatian community that populated the area. Kaipara District Council acting chief executive, Curt Martin, says given the quantity of rubbish, the illegal dumping has most likely been happening for a while. “It’s disappointing to see p Council contractors discovered a large tomo filled with this sort of action from local illegally dumped rubbish residents effectively turning their backyard into a dump. DAFFODIL DAY FRIDAY 31 AUGUST 2018 ST

Spreading hope The daffodil is one of the first flowers of the spring season and represents hope for the one in three New Zealanders affected by cancer each year. Since 1990 Daffodil Day has been bringing people together to support the Cancer Society’s work and raising awareness of cancer in New Zealand. Money raised during this annual campaign is the biggest generator of funds for the Cancer Society and goes towards vital scientific research into the causes and treatment of all types of cancer, as well as providing a wide range of support services, education and awareness campaigns and programmes for people affected. Whether it’s buying daffodils, donating to street collectors or purchasing merchandise — every gift counts. Conducting and funding world-class research is key to the Cancer Society’s work in preventing cancer, and with

the generous funds donated by New Zealanders, there has been significant progress made in cancer research over the past 50 years. The survival rate for many common cancers has improved by up to 30 per cent, and more than 60 per cent of cancer patients now survive five years or more. Every year treatments are getting better, and research is finding more results. More people are surviving cancer than ever before. The Cancer Society also provides a range of support services locally and nationally, which include information, health promotion and education programmes to reduce the risk of cancer. DAFFODIL DAY FRIDAY 31 AUGUST 2018 ST

Preparation behind the scenes u by Jill Dickie

On the last Friday of August each year, most of us recognise the yellow theme of the day being Daffodil Day and purchase a flower or teddy bear as a donation to cancer research. For people behind the scenes, however, it takes months of preparation for the 200-plus full-time staff, organising around 9,000 volunteers and their collection buckets to make the event a success. Growers pick and prepare thousands of bunches of fresh blooms to be distributed around New Zealand to businesses making gift baskets and floral arrangements. In China, hundreds of thousands of fabric daffodils and teddy bears are produced and shipped here.

The printing industry is busy producing the many brochures and stickers to be handed out on the day, and website designers updating web pages with current help information and setting up facilities for online donations. There are even eftpos machines loaned by principal sponsor, ANZ, to overcome fundraising challenges created by digital currency. Clubs hold fundraisers and schools are encouraged to participate with a range of resources available for children, including a colouring competition and

quizzes. After the big day, volunteers and staff spend hours counting the collected monies ready for banking, then the nationwide total can be announced. No one should feel pressured to donate

Representation Review 2018 Every six years all councils in New Zealand review their representation arrangements, as required by the Local Electoral Act 2001. Kaipara District Council is in the process of deciding what representation arrangements it will use for its next two elections, so the outcome of the current review will apply to the 2019 and 2022 elections. Council has proposed the establishment of a new KaiwakaMangawhai Ward, making four wards, with two Councillors representing each. Council’s initial proposal for the representation review differs from the current scenario as follows: • creating a new Kaiwaka-Mangawhai Ward; • expanding Otamatea Ward northwest to Tokatoka Road, including Ruawai; • reducing West Coast-Central Ward (from Tokatoka Road southeast to Otamatea); and • having two Councillors per ward. There will be a drop in session on Tuesday 28 August 2018, midday to 1pm, Kaiwaka War Memorial Hall, Kaiwaka or you can offer feedback via the Council website.

AUTO

Summer roads are calling u by Andy Bryenton

We all know you’re supposed to buy a practical, sensible car with your head, not your heart. That’s the sole reason for the existence of people movers and small hatchbacks — a sensible runabout to serve the needs of the family. But there are other machines you buy entirely based on emotion. And with spring knocking on the door and summer right behind, it’s a good season to look at some vehicles that exist to put a smile on your face. A quick look around Dargaville’s Marcel Motors turned up three examples, which sum up the concept in different ways. Many different pre-loved cars and bikes have come through the doors here over the years, but there’s usually something special on the books, which is a bit out of the ordinary. Take the big red 2013 Holden HSV R8 Clubsport, which graces the indoor showroom. It’s exactly the kind of car, which you promise you’ll own one day, and right now, with the Commodore line sadly discontinued, one could make the argument that this finely tuned, highpowered manual example with a snarling supercharger is a classic investment. Then again, you may have always promised yourself that one day you’d learn to ride a motorcycle. If you’ve gotten about on smaller bikes, it’s likely that you’d love to hit the highway on a classic Harley Davidson. In one corner of the showroom, we found an immaculate black Wide Glide Harley, complete with wrapped pipes, tons of chrome and that rebel stance on the road, which looks great while still being comfy over massive distances. Summer’s a great time for a cruise. Finally, there are plenty of folks out there who like the idea of moving their holiday home to wherever the sun shines, and the fish are jumping.

Among the utes and vans on the yard, we turned up a navy blue Nissan Civilian — a full house bus conversion with literally all the mod cons. Far from the old gypsy caravan, this is a modern motorhome, which could provide a whole summer of adventures

for a family. That’s just three examples from one place. Your idea of sun may be different, but now’s the time to make PRICES HAVE BEEN SLASHED

a move. Don’t spend another summer pining for what might have been — it’s time to get out there and enjoy it!  ¢

AUTO ADVERTORIAL

Dad’s first car by the Packard and Pioneer Museum team

‘Hey, that’s the car I learnt to drive in!’ This comment is often heard from visitors when they visit our ‘Mostly English Shed’. So-called, as it also displays several cars manufactured in other countries. The main car groups you will find are our Morris collection and Austin vehicles, which are familiar to the older New Zealand public. The Morris Minor was a very popular ‘first’ car in its time. Morris cars were assembled by Dominion Motors in Auckland from the mid-1930s. Spot our 1978 Austin Princess, famous for being voted one of the worst cars in the world by the Dog and Lemon Guide — a New Zealand car buyer’s guide, which is sold throughout the British Commonwealth. The Ford Prefect is perhaps the vehicle pointed out the most frequently as ‘the car dad learnt to drive in’. Ford set up a production company in New Zealand in 1936 and continued producing cars until 1997. They produced the Prefect from 1954. Prior to 2011, you could sit your New Zealand driver’s licence at the age

of 15. The Hillman Hunter or the Hillman Imp was often the first car for a young 15-year-old driver. One of the ‘cool’ cars to own during the 1960s and 1970s was the VW Beetle — ie the Volkswagen. Our 1953 VW is painted the classic blue many of these vehicles came out in. Of course, if you were a broke student, then the cheapest car on the market for many years was the

Czechoslovakian Skoda. We had one visitor who, seeing ours, told us that when he went to pick up his girlfriend, he’d park the Skoda around the corner, so her dad couldn’t see it. Bring your dad to visit our museum for Father’s Day — or just for a nostalgic ramble and a bit of family time. You might hear his stories about his first car. They may surprise you!

Network News Northpower sets out ten-year investment plan Northpower Limited has set out it its ten-year investment plan that will inject almost $200 million in the Kaipara and Whangarei economies. The announcement comes on the back of a strong result for the 2018 financial year and follows the recent Northpower Trust Annual Meeting in Dargaville. After investing $25 million in maintenance and capital expenditure on its electricity network the past financial year alone, Northpower has reiterated its ten-year plan to further renew and modernise its network. The company will spend $194 million in the next decade. By doing so, Northpower is ensuring it provides a safe, secure and reliable electricity network to support the region’s economy, capable of supporting new technologies like electric vehicles, roof top solar and energy storage technologies as they become mainstream in the years to come. Chief Executive Andrew McLeod believes the investment roadmap is a critical contribution to supporting economic growth in the region. “As a proudly Northland owned company, we are strongly focussed on maximising our contribution in Kaipara and Whangarei by delivering quality infrastructure to the region at an affordable price,” says Mr McLeod. “We are pleased with our business performance this past year as we have sharpened our focus on our role in Northland and our New Zealand contraction operations. Supporting the communities and clients that have supported us over the years is at the heart of our business.

For power and hot water faults:

0800 10 40 40

“We also feel it is important to be actively involved in the community. That’s why we are continuing to support sponsorships like the Northland Rescue Helicopter Service - which will be celebrating 30 years of saving lives later this year - and other excellent community initiatives such as the Healthy Homes Tai Tokerau home insulation programme and the Tai Tokerau Education Trust which is providing chrome books to school students.” Mr McLeod believes another critical boost to Northland is the expansion of the Northpower Fibre network beyond Whangarei to 12 more towns throughout Kaipara and Whangarei. “This is an initiative we have been progressing with Crown Infrastructure Partners, and our crews are doing a great job rolling out fibre networks and connecting our Whangarei and Kaipara regions to fibre. This truly is world class communications infrastructure,” says Mr McLeod. In Northpower’s 2018 financial year, Northpower Fibre connected 2,603 people to its UFB network in Whangarei and connected 306 new homes outside of the city. Strong connection growth has continued for the 2019 financial year growing by a further 1,044 new connections over the past four months. Meantime, Northpower Limited connected 1,087 new homes to its electricity network in Kaipara (338 homes) and Whangarei (748 homes) in the 2018 financial year. Strong connection growth is expected to continue in the electricity network with 348 new connections already completed since April 1.

Kiwi hatching coming soon I notice many of the smaller birds like the thrush, blackbirds and the starlings are busy getting prepared for nesting time, so I guess by early next month we will start to see an increase in young bird numbers. I would like to say a big thank you to the Northpower Board and staff for the nice flowers that were sent to my wife Robyn when she was in hospital recently. And yes, at times even we need looking after! Robyn ended up in Whangarei Hospital where they thought she had a mild heart attack and after three days they sent Robyn to Auckland Hospital for more checks. Thank goodness they found it was not a heart attack but ended up being too much stress over the past few months which made it look like a heart attack. So, thank you all at Northpower, it sure brightened Robyn’s day for her. I would like to also thank Bayer NZ Ltd for renewing their support for another three years, as this is what keeps the Recovery Centre going. We have a kiwi egg from Kaitaia in the incubator and being a very fresh egg, it will be another 60 days before we end up with a kiwi chick. You can see

the egg on our web site and as it gets closer to hatching I will update just when it will hatch. This is also the time of the year when we start getting the big sea birds like the albatross and giant petrels, as they get caught in the big storms way out at sea. To avoid being drowned, they head for land and safety along the West Coast. I like to let the media know when we get these birds as this gives the public a chance to see what they look like while they are recovering. At times we get asked if we are allowed to show our injured birds to the public. All the work we do at the Recovery Centre is covered by Department of Conservation permits and the Recovery Centre is not a zoo or wildlife park, which means we don’t keep our birds just for show. However, if we feel showing a bird won’t do it any harm then it’s at our discretion to do so, and this forms a valuable part of education that we display at the Recovery Centre. I think after 30 years we should know what is good for a bird! Robert and Robyn Webb. Proudly sponsored by

Wrestling Success

Everybody Wins! $1200 Donation to Dargaville Primary

LANDLORDS

On Saturday 4th August we had a great night of fun with the Maniacs United in the Town Hall, who travelled from Auckland. This was the 5th time the Wrestlers came to town — even the Mums and Dads love it. So be ready for the next one. The Star Wars theme was a galactic hit. Thank you to all who came and supported the night. Great outfits — here are some of the winners on the night. A huge hit with the kids — this year funds raised went to the Dargaville Primary School.

On the fifth occasion of the Maniacs United Wrestling night on August 4th the attendance raised $1200. On the night it was easy to see that the majority of the crowd were of primary school age so it was especially pertinent that the money raised was going back to assist the school.
