p Students at Tangiteroria School chose a character from their favourite books to dress up as for book week last week. “Children and teachers dressed up for our parade day gaining points for their house. We had a lot of fun with a shared morning tea,” says librarian Jilly Martin. “Books are a fabulous way for children to learn. So many things have gone online with computers, but it is nice to have a tangible book to help children with their imagination. We had the Tin Man from The Wizard of Oz, Pippy Longstocking, Sherlock Holmes and Alice in Wonderland to name a few characters on display. Dressing up expands children’s imagination as they portray how their character looks. Our school has a very extensive library and every Friday the children choose a new book to take home for the week. Funds raised from sales during the week will go toward new readers for the pupils, and each student chose a book to add to the school library.”

A small gathering at dawn last week to bless the land and the project was a quiet start to what will be a ‘gamechanging’ regional project, according to stakeholders. When finished, the Kaipara scheme alone could store as much as 12 million

cubic litres of water. The reservoir is just one in a series, which are planned to be built by Te Tai Tokerau Water Trust on the northern Pouto Peninsula in Kaipara and the Mid-North around Kaikohe. Combined, the water storage and distribution schemes would

allow landowners to plan potential land use with confidence and would support approximately 7,000ha of new horticultural development, a 50 per cent increase in Northland’s current area under production. continued on page 3 …

p Jack Raleigh was a radar operator in the second world war and would often share stories with Lifestyler journalist, Ann van Engelen, and her daughters during the years. “Jack, and his wife June, had a photo of June on Queen Street in Auckland amongst a celebrating crowd of people,” says Ann. “When I asked about it she turned to me and said: ‘That is celebrating VJ day. I was working as an office lady, and the announcement came over the radio that the war was over. Sirens went off, and we all went out on to the streets and danced and celebrated together’. Jack was on radar duty and told me more than once how the Japanese submarines were actually situated very close to Auckland City. He said: ‘Ann, the Americans arrived just in time. New Zealand has America to thank for the freedom we have today’.”

SITE BLESSED FOR KAIPARA RESERVOIR

MARINE PESTS TARGETED

u by Paul Campbell

The fight against marine pests in the Kaipara Harbour and the wider Northland anchorages and marinas is to be stepped up again with boat hull inspections as summer approaches.

p Dover Samuels, Deputy Mayor Anna Curnow, Te Tai Tokerau Water Trust members, mana whenua representatives and other stakeholders gathered to bless the site of a new dam set to serve the Kaipara, situated on the Pouto Peninsula

Members of the trust were joined by mana whenua representatives, KDC deputy mayor Anna Curnow, as well as the landowner on whose property most of the new reservoir will be located, as the blessing took place at the site. “I grew up and went to school in Dargaville, and this is a once in a lifetime transformational opportunity for Tai Tokerau,” said trust chair, Murray McCully. “While we might have had plenty of rain lately, we are all acutely aware of the problems faced in the north through water scarcity. We are very thankful for the government support to help us address the issue. This project will allow landowners to plan potential land-use change with confidence. It will also provide local councils with more tools to bolster existing municipal water supplies.” Trust member and Dargaville accountant, Kathryn de Bruin, said

the economic analysis had indicated provision of the water storage schemes would generate an increase in economic activity of $83 million in the Kaipara and $67 million per annum in the MidNorth. It would create up to 880 new jobs across both regions. “We have some of the best horticultural soils in the country, but without a reliable supply of water, it’s hard to realise that potential. “Once we do, though, the entire community can expect to benefit from increased economic activity,” said Ms de Bruin. Te Roroa general manager, Snow Tane, who led the ceremony at the Kaipara site, said he supported the kaupapa of the scheme. “We support the transformational change and sustainable practices being promoted. Diversification and Land use change to higher-value activities is a big opportunity for our people.” ¢

Councillor Jack Craw chairs the Northland Regional Council’s Biosecurity and Biodiversity working party. He says while the threat from a variety of marine pests is everpresent, there have been successes. Council staff undertake an annual hull inspection programme for everything from recreational boats to superyachts and fishing vessels to barges from October, before vessel owners start travelling to new areas with the onset of warmer weather. “Of the more than 2,000 vessels checked last season, roughly one in five, or 389 of 2,048 vessels, had been harbouring marine pests,” Mr Craw said. “Of those, 115 were harbouring Mediterranean fanworm or Undaria seaweed. “Currently 15 out of Northland’s 17 harbours and significant marine areas are still fanworm-free. We’re keen to maintain these successes and build on them where possible. Public support is integral to successful marine biosecurity. “We’ve had literally dozens of calls over the past few months from concerned vessel owners and

members of the public who have noticed unusual species, and provided positive feedback on our programme.” Council is also working with MPI and industry to investigate a national standard for antifouling and cleaning. Under council rules, it’s an offence to transport marine pests in Northland. Anyone encountering them should notify the council on 0800 002 004 or email marinebiosecurity@nrc.govt.nz. ¢

COMMEMORATING 75 YEARS u by Andy Bryenton

On September 2 we mark a milestone in New Zealand and world history; 75 years since the end of the second world war, secured by allied victories in both the European and Pacific theatres of war. One hundred and forty thousand New Zealand personnel, from sailors and pilots to front line infantry, tank crews and combat medics took part in the largest conflict ever seen. By May 15 1945, Nazi Germany was defeated. The dictator Adolf Hitler had committed suicide in his Berlin bunker, surrounded by the Soviet Red Army, while British, Commonwealth, American and Free French forces took the rest of the country and liberated nations conquered by the Third Reich. In the Pacific, sea battles between the United States and Imperial Japan had seen the Japanese rolled back to their home islands, their flagship the Yamato sunk, and their bases of naval production finally destroyed by the deployment of the atom bomb. The generals and admirals who advised the emperor admitted defeat on August 18 1945. On September 2, delegates from the major powers involved in the war met aboard the United States battleship Missouri to officially sign a treaty, ending the war and setting the terms for peace. The news was met with celebration worldwide, including here in New Zealand, where crowds filled the streets. Soldiers in the field, occupying cities across Europe and islands across the Pacific, celebrated the news that the war was over. Seven and a half decades on, only a small number of veterans from the

VICTORY DAY QUIET FOR RSA

u by Paul Campbell

After 104 years of serving New Zealand armed forces veterans and their families as well as creating community hubs across the country, the Royal New Zealand Returned and Services’ Association, best-known as the RSA, is one of the largest voluntary welfare organisations in the country. It is also one of the oldest ex-service organisations in the world. After more than a century of service, its signature Anzac Day on April 25 fell quiet this year and again this month with victory in the second world war celebrations stilled by the coronavirus pandemic. Restrictions on gatherings and social distancing have made the usual observances too difficult to manage under levels of lockdown imposed to combat the disease. “We are deeply disappointed, especially for the veterans of the conflict who were scheduled to be present (at commemorations),” said Ministry for Culture and Heritage CEO Bernadette Cavanagh. “However, public health is our first priority, and we need to follow all guidelines, including restrictions on public gatherings.” RSA National President BJ Clark said the cancellation of events was “the price to pay for keeping veterans safe. We’ve got to acknowledge a lot of our veterans are susceptible to Covid-19.” An Act of Remembrance was held at Pukeahu’s Tomb of the Unknown Warrior in Wellington but was closed to the public. Wounded soldiers returning from the ill-fated Gallipoli Campaign founded the RSA in 1916. It received royal

THEY KEPT THE HOME FIRES BURNING

u by Paul Campbell photos courtesy of The Kauri Museum

“War clouds gathered as the Germans invaded Poland and dragged the world into a new and terrible conflict. The chores that we had to undertake as youngsters proved invaluable when we womenfolk were faced with taking on more and more farm work.” The late Mavis Smith, of Totara House in Matakohe, recorded in her book, Child of the Kauri, a vivid account of those years when Kaipara wives, mothers and daughters took up full-time farming while husbands, brothers and sons were called away for war service. While many women also went into the armed services, notably as nurses, there was also a gender-dominated land army to keep feeding the nation and the wider world. ‘As the men were called away, my main wartime task came when I was asked to keep an eye on my brothers’ Parahi farm with its sheep and Black Poll cattle,’ Mavis wrote. ‘This entailed riding a slow, old, part-draught horse from Totara House to Parahi each Monday, returning home on Friday. ‘It was a slow journey for a young woman who really had never learned to ride, so much so that one local farmer had the cheek to suggest it took me a week simply to get there and back! Just getting underway was quite a performance. ‘On the first outing, I caught the horse and put the bridle on upside down. The nag was walked up to a handy saw bench, and I climbed up and managed to

swing a leg across the saddle. Then with one hand on the reins and one holding the front of the saddle, I rode down to the front gate. My sister Clarice handed me my pikau, a sugar sack, with bread, butter, tea, sugar and meat to keep me going for a week.

‘At Parahi there was no power, telephone or benzine. It was lambing time, so I went round the sheep each day. I was partly there to deter rustling — just being seen about the property. I had my brothers’ dog with me, and we joined forces after cattle broke through

a fence into another paddock to return them whence they came. I repaired the fence — sort of. ‘Back home at Totara House, it was haymaking time. The work force for this job was almost entirely female. It was a common sight to see me, sister Clarice,

cousins, Peg, Margaret and Phil Smith and Brenda Sterling off with our forks over our shoulders, along Wharf Road to help Mavis Neil. We might call in on Jim Patterson at the garage and have a glass of beer to help us on our way. ‘At one point, I found myself in charge of a horse-drawn hay rake. ‘Just sit on it, pull this lever, let it go, step on this when the rake is full, and you will be set,’ I was told. My feet could not reach the necessary pedals anyway, so I had to stand up. Somehow I managed. ‘With wartime rationing in force, Clarice and I decided to fatten a pig to augment the household supplies and

had been leaked and some of the participants, on seeing the description of their ‘wounds’, took to the scrub for the day instead. ‘One of the various home guard activities involved lookout posts for plane spotting, and one of these was on top of Tokatoka’s peak, with a Morse-

make a change from harbour seafood. When the time to kill it came, neighbours Billy Ball and Buff Erne helped out, and pig became bacon and ham. ‘On a more serious note, the war was brought closer to home as the Japanese advanced into the Pacific. ‘We women undertook first aid, home nursing and hygiene courses. Because of the threat of invasion, my Uncle Richard’s empty home became a hospital ward. ‘The Matakohe Store was a casualty clearing station, and various ‘wounded’ were to be collected by an ‘ambulance’ truck. MEMORIES ARE FOREVER u by Ann van Engelen

Dargaville resident Margaret Bishop has for many years been involved in the Northern Wairoa Returned Services Association, initially helping her parents Harry and Alice Baycroft with their RSA responsibilities.

“I grew up in Canada, and my mum’s father was in the first world war. He had been gassed so couldn’t work because of damage to his lungs. He constantly told war stories about the rain, the mud and barrels of rabbits that they were sent from Australia for food,” says Margaret. “My dad served in the war, and before he died, I asked about his experiences. He told me, but to him, it was very private.“

Harry Baycroft joined the army at 18 years old as a butcher’s apprentice. “He was in the Princess Patricia Army Troop, and as he got older, he had to fight. They fought because they were told to. He said he found himself shooting people that in other circumstances would be his friends. “He had stories like one day after a meal, he announced he could cook better than what they were given, so he

For Kaipara District Council COVID-19 updates go to kaipara.govt.nz/covid Growing a better Kaipara The Council is preparing its Long Term Plan for 2021-2031, to help us achieve our new Council vision of Growing a better Kaipara. A Long Term Plan outlines what we are working towards over the next 10 years and maps out our planned activities for the next three years. Already our teams have been preparing Asset Management Plans to manage our roads, bridges, stormwater, wastewater, playgrounds and other Council property. Our teams have also been looking back over service requests they’ve received previously. These activities are being prioritised and scheduled, along with other work that must be done to protect important assets and services. Over the next few months we’ll update you on what we are thinking and you’ll have opportunity to have input. Here’s some of what we are planning. Around October we’ll come to you with some high level questions about what’s important to you. We may ask your thoughts around the future of Kaipara as a District, things like managing rubbish and waste, water supply, climate change and growth. There may be other things we seek input on. Timing is to be confirmed but if you want to make sure you are in the loop sign up for our People’s Panel now, so you can input into our plans. Go to kaipara.govt.nz/panel to sign up. You’ll also have a chance to meet with Elected Members and find out what we are doing to keep your services working, now and in the future. This will be your chance to ask questions. We’ll confirm timing and opportunities a little later. Next February you can have your say on the entire plan. We’ll be consulting formally on how we will spend your rates over the coming years. This is your chance to have your say before budgets are set for the next three years. It’s important that you get involved and tell us whether we are balancing our spending in the right way.

Kaipara Wharves Construction for the Dargaville pontoon is scheduled to start in September 2020 (depending on COVID-19 restrictions). The work will take two to three weeks, and during this time a portion of the carpark will be used for materials and equipment. Car parking will return to normal once the pontoon is completed. Site investigations are currently underway for the Pahi wharf upgrade, and technical site investigations will begin for Pouto wharf next month. You may see divers in the water at Pouto, checking out what’s beneath the surface. While we’re waiting to hear if Pouto Road Phase 2 sealing has received the green light, surveyors are starting some preliminary technical work. Survey teams will be mapping out the current road layout, drainage, banks and property boundaries from Ari Ari Road to the beach. Sealing for the first 10km of Pouto Road (Phase 1) is due to begin later this year.

George Henry Lendrum, known as Harry, was born in Te Kopuru August 16 1920, and was educated at Tatarariki and Dargaville schools. “Harry had learnt about sheep and cattle farming on the family farm. Later he partnered with his brother Ken, and they ran a Romney and Southdown sheep stud and a cattle farm — a very successful operation,” says daughter Christine Herald. “When war broke out he was called into the Territorials as soon as he turned 21 years old. He was drafted into the overseas ranks and served in the 21st battalion. He was overseas for three years, mostly in the Middle East and Italy. He took part in the Monte Cassino campaign as a member of the Signals Corps. “Harry was part of a team responsible for setting up and maintaining phone communications systems, working under constant enemy fire. “When the war ended, he returned to the family farm.” Harry married Ella in 1954 and settled on the Redhill block where he lived until he retired off the farm. “War was not something Dad found easy to talk about, but he often spoke of the support of family and community with letters and food in his time abroad. He was not wounded, but effects of war

FROM KAIPARA TO THE ITALIAN ALPS

u by Andy Bryenton

When Italy fell under the power of Axis dictator Benito Mussolini, the allied command knew that it would take a superhuman effort to drive the length of the Italian peninsula, routing Italian and German troops at every village and crossroads. Many of the men called to undertake this perilous task were from New Zealand, and a fair few were Kaipara lads seeking adventure and answering duty’s call. Auckland man Kenneth Dale told the sergeant-at-arms that he was experienced at driving a truck, thanks to his work in printing. This admission landed him in the armoured division alongside Kaipara west coaster Dick Rope, who hailed from a farming family near the Ripiro coast. They were taught to operate a small Valentine-class tank at Waiouru then sent across to Cairo, Egypt, where troops were mustering to claim back North Africa and then push into Italy, following the American-led operation Husky. There in the desert heat was another Kaipara soldier, who grew up in Turiwiri and who enlisted at the age of 18, as soon as legally possible. Lou Thompson would return from the war to ride with the Northland hunt for many years, but he left his seven brothers and sisters behind when his country called for fighting men. He found himself bound for Italy, part of the same multinational force, which would advance all the way from Naples to the foot of the Alps. Kiwi troops landed at Bari on New Year’s Eve, then advanced toward Faenza where German forces were holding out, despite relentless bombing from the US Air Force’s bomber command, the

men who inspired the wartime novel Catch 22. Dale and Rope’s tank and other elements of the armoured forces supported the infantry advance, who, in the words of Thompson, ‘didn’t know what we were getting into. We were

trained for the worst. The Germans we encountered were spent; hungry and dirty after years of fighting. This was early ‘45’. The worst is what unfolded as the Kiwis forged ahead, revealing desperate

and undersupplied enemies who feared retreat as much as the allied bullets. Soldiers on both sides attest that fanatical Axis officers would sometimes shoot down their own men if they broke and ran. Others, more pragmatic, raised

the white flag. Ken Dale spoke of accepting the surrender of two Italians in a bizarre scene. The pair were on a bicycle, bandaged and sooty, coming across the blasted plain beneath the hill of Monte Cassino where he and Dick Rope had fought in their tank. Cassino was a baptism of fire for the Kiwis. A battle over a fortified monastery, which saw the greatest artillery barrage ever massed, level a whole valley of farms and olive trees into what Dale described as ‘man-made hell’. His photos, illicitly taken with a small portable camera he kept concealed among the tank’s tools and supplies, show a vivid picture of the fighting. In contrast to others of he, Dick and their crew smiling and relaxing in Cairo, these are images of desperate combat, men carrying away the wounded and sniping from piles of rubble as the armoured units ground their way uphill. The final hurdle on the campaign was to cross the Senio River. Lou Thompson recalled in later years how he traversed this line on the map marking the edge of Axis control, carrying the back of a boat. The man carrying the front suddenly struck a mine, and in an instant, lost his leg. Events like these are described by many veterans of the Italian campaign, of mates who went for supplies or to scout ahead and never returned, or who were cut off in mid-conversation by a sniper’s bullet. Tank men like Dale and Rope would often light a cigarette at night and hold it up out of the hatch of

their machine with a reed or twig to see if it attracted fire, before ‘unbuttoning’ the hatch and disembarking. When the war finished, it wasn’t all over for any of the Kiwi soldiers who fought in Italy. Some, like Lou Thompson, went on to serve for a while with the occupation forces in Japan before returning home. Others came back to find that war had changed their perceptions of life and what was important. There was hard work to do, as well, rebuilding New Zealand economically and socially. Dick Rope resettled in the west Kaipara, and the road to Glinks Gully’s campground now bears his family name. His family have gone on to honour the memory of his service in practical ways; Betty Rope has just finished her tenure as patroness of the Dargaville RSA this year. Kenneth Dale went back to Auckland, built his family a home, constructing the whole two-storey brick house with his own hands, and resumed work as a printer. Lou Thompson came back to the Kaipara, and as well as riding out with the hunt, he became a successful farmer near Baylys Beach, and remains so to this day. When asked if he’d do it all again, despite the horrors of war, he said, at age 91 that he would, under the same circumstances. It’s a sentiment, which is quietly expressed by many of our veterans. That theirs was a generation who did what was necessary, despite how much it changed them. ¢

A LEGACY OF RESPECT

u by Andy Bryenton

Eighty years ago, a fighting force was assembled in New Zealand that would change the course of the second world war and become legendary among our allies and foes alike. They were the 28th Maori Battalion, and their actions in North Africa, Italy, Greece and Crete made a lasting impression. In 1972, The Maori Battalion’s retired chaplain, Reverend Wiremu Huata attended an Afrika Korps reunion dinner in the city of Mainz, Germany. In the spirit of postwar reconciliation, both Allied and Axis commanders were present, including General Seigfried Westphal, once chief of staff to Erwin Rommel, the leader of all German forces in North Africa during the second world war. Noting the reverend’s service record, General Westphal recalled something Rommel had often exclaimed when hearing of the exploits of the 3,600 soldiers who fought by Wiremu Huata’s side. “Give me the Maori Battalion, and I will conquer the world.” High praise from any commander, but especially from the enemy, and one who believed in Aryan supremacy. There was a good reason for Rommel’s attitude. Throughout the campaign, he’d been vexed by the tenacity of Kiwi forces, and especially by the Maori Battalion. An example came from the siege of Minqar Qaim, where allied forces seemed trapped and low on ammunition. The men of the Maori Battalion locked bayonets and charged, terrifying the surrounding enemy and punching a hole through the

lines. In another engagement, taking the vital mountain gap at Tegaba, SecondLieutenant Moana-Nui-a-Kiwa Ngarimu won the Victoria Cross for leading a charge with his men uphill into machine gun fire. He personally destroyed both enemy machine guns, enduring an entire night of counter-attacks during which he ran out of tommy gun ammunition

and resorted at times to throwing rocks at the enemy, and finally holding on during the next morning with only himself and two soldiers remaining, until reinforcements arrived. While Ngarimu was killed in action, his extreme heroism was reported not just by his own men, but by captured German soldiers too. In all, 3,600 men served with the 28th

Maori Battalion, with 649 sadly killed in action. However, this one battalion holds more awards for bravery under fire than any other in our military history. From the desert heat of North Africa to the foothills of the Alps in Northern Italy, they earned the respect of generals and leaders from both sides in a fierce and long campaign. ¢

A HEART OF COURAGE

17

u by Liz Clark

When the second world war broke out in 1939, 17-year-old Douglas Ashby-Peckham decided to join the war effort. Douglas grew up on his parents’ William and Ivy’s farm at Mititai. He was noted on his service record as being a farmhand. Signing on with the Royal New Zealand Air Force in 1940, the young man headed to England and joined a bomber crew flying sorties over Europe. By 1943, Douglas at just 20 years old, was a well-seasoned wireless operator and air gunnery operator. Carrying the rank of flight sergeant, he served with RAF 218 Squadron crewing in a Short Stirling bomber with a team of mixed nationalities. They were all young, 24-year-old Pilot Officer William Shillinglaw commanding the aircraft, was joined by Sergeant Patrick D McArdle, 23, navigator, Sergeant Thomas R Lunn, 27, bomb aimer and Sergeant Raymond P Coward, 30, flight mechanic. The rest of the crew was made up by Sergeant E Gurney, dorsal turret gunner, and Sergeant Edgar D Hart, 20, tail turrent gunner. Their Short Stirling bomber was a four-engined heavy bomber used in night raids over Europe between 1939 to 1943, when it was replaced by more advanced and better-designed aircraft.

The Stirling was later used for mining German ports and towing glider aircraft during the allied invasion of Europe between 1944 and 1945. On the night of June 22 1943, the Stirling BK712 took off for a night bombing raid over Belgium. As the Stirling neared Langdorp, it was detected by the German radar station Meise. The station radioed flying ace Lieutenant Wolfgang Schnaufer of the Stab II/NJG1 night flying squadron of an enemy aircraft coming in from the west. As Schaufer’s fighter came into range, the Stirling crew had seen him and had started to turn the Stirling away. However, the German air ace managed to score several hits in the Stirling’s fuselage and wings causing the bomber to go into a nosedive and crash into a wheatfield just near Langdorp. By the time the Germans reached the crash site, the entire crew of seven were dead; their bomber obliterated from the force of the impact. Douglas and his comrades were interred at Langdorp church. In 1993, a memorial stone was placed at the site in commemoration of the aircrew lost in the crash. Lest we forget. ¢

PERMANENTLY ON PARADE u by Andy Bryenton

Visitors to Dargaville’s RSA will not help but notice the large, military green artillery piece parked outside the buildings. It is one of the powerful 25 pounder guns, which accompanied Kiwi troops of the 2nd Division in the second world war; a design that went on to serve until the 1970s.

Guns like this were the heavy firepower of the 2nd New Zealand Division as they advanced across the western desert of Africa and on into Italy. Gunners of the 2nd Division used its 102mm shells to bombard enemy strongpoints and with direct fire against Nazi vehicles. Fighting with the 2nd Division meant that this was the gun that supported some of our most decorated and admired infantry soldiers. Men like Charles Upham and Keith Elliot, both of whom received the Victoria Cross while fighting with the 2nd. The Dargaville gun is a typical example of the heavy field artillery, which was hauled by the Kiwi forces all the way up through Italy. A robust construction that is still used to this day, with munitions behind produced in Pakistan. While it has been superseded in our own armed forces by more modern designs, at the time, it was hailed by troops as a clever and efficient weapon. Take a look at the Dargaville gun, and you’ll note that it sits not on its transport tyres, but on a spikes round platform, meant to be dropped from the gun trailer before the weapon was set up. This platform made the gun more stable, easier to aim, less prone to recoil, and simple to roll about to face new targets. Little innovations like this saved lives in battle.

p New Zealand artillerymen firing a battery of 25 pounder QF guns; the versatile weapons served in African deserts and Italian winters equally effectively

When the Dargaville gun finished it,s tour of duty it was stored, then decommissioned in the 1970s. In 1979 the then commander in chief of the army, Major General Brian Poananga, himself a veteran of the second world war, Korean War and Malaya Emergency, presented this example of the 25 pounder QF to Dargaville RSA, as a reminder of the duty and service of its members to the people of the town. A fitting tribute;

a machine that had shared the same hard road and fought the same battles and the returned veterans it stands to honour. In recent years, the venerable field piece has been given a new lease of life by local metalworkers and painters, Greg Smith, Ross Gillespie and Brett Stewart. Thanks to their efforts, the QF25’s ‘long parade’ goes on, commemorating the duty and sacrifice of the soldiers who fought beside it. ¢

FOUR HEROIC LOCAL FLIERS u by Andy Bryenton

The second world was the first mechanised war of the air, where the fragile aircraft of the Great War were transformed into deadly weapons. It took a special kind of courage to fight in the skies, as evidenced by these four examples of ordinary men from our part of New Zealand who achieved extraordinary things. Malcolm Cullen of Maungaturoto was shot down over France while flying a mission early in the war and was imprisoned after being helped by the French Resistance. Locked up in Buchenwald’s notorious death camp, Cullen and fellow Kiwi airman Phil Lamerson kept up morale among the troops, while they tried to get a message to command to say they were alive. Their efforts saved the lives of many who were wrongly accused of spying; reclassified as legitimate POWs, they escaped certain death. Lloyd Trigg was born in the Far North and worked as a machinery salesman in the rural areas around Whangarei. He gained his pilot’s wings and fought in the battle of the Atlantic, detecting and sinking German U-boats. In one such engagement, Trigg’s Liberator aircraft was severely hit by gunfire from an enemy submarine. Trigg had to choose between sinking the Nazi sub and saving his plane. He chose to stay on his bombing run, and his Liberator went up in flames before hitting the ocean. He was awarded the Victoria Cross based entirely on evidence given by the enemy sub crew, who described his heroic final attack to their captors when they were

p A liberator bomber like this one should have been no match for the anti aircraft guns of a Nazi submarine, but Lloyd Trigg managed to sink one, earning the only VC in history recommended by captured enemy sailors, who were shocked by his bravery

picked up by the navy, aboard a life raft Trigg had dropped from his plane. Bomber crewman Trevor Dill of Wellsford’s Kaipara coast flew no less than 47 missions, many at night, all under fire, to shut down German war industry. Volunteering for this dangerous task meant fewer tanks and ships for his fellow allied soldiers to face, and he and his fellow fliers knew it. On one occasion Trevor’s plane managed to fly on after suffering 130 direct hits, and he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal

in 1945 for going far beyond the call of duty. Another decorated airman from the north was flying ace Derek Ward. He was the son of a Whangarei doctor, who enlisted early with the RAF and fought in the Battle of Britain, holding back the might of the Luftwaffe. He tragically lost his life in combat over Africa, defending two fellow Hurricane pilots, who had bailed out and were helpless in their parachutes. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and bar for his efforts during the war. ¢

Northpower partners with MIT and People Potential to develop young talent Northpower employs around 1300 people nationwide and is focussed on developing young people in our sector – providing local employment and addressing the skills shortage in the industry. We are partnering with Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT) to provide a mixed model academic and practical qualification – the NZ Diploma in Engineering. We currently have 14 cadets in this programme, all on paid three-year scholarships. Four cadets are based in Northland – allowing our local young talent to study, develop their career and work close at home. One of those is 20 year old Alyssa Paki who was looking to do something different after five years in retail. Last year she received an electrical training cadetship – a joint initiative between Northpower and People Potential. Part of the cadetship included six weeks of in-house training working alongside our network team in Whangārei. Alyssa’s potential shone through, and she was awarded a Northpower engineering scholarship to undertake the MIT programme.

“I get to help out with projects, gain practical experience which helps me with my studies and the support that I have from my colleagues at Northpower is invaluable,” Not only has Alyssa continued to achieve, scoring top grades this year, but she is excited about a future in the power industry “It’s been a real highlight working with the engineers and I can definitely see this as my future career. It’s such a great opportunity to work for an awesome company.” Alyssa is an amazing addition to our team and has a very bright future. Anyone interested in being considered for future scholarship opportunities should email us to register your interest at info@northpower.com
