With those words, Kaipara Recreational Facilities Trust founding members Darleen Lang and Izaak Birch acknowledged the eight hundred submissions, nearly seven years since the idea took hold, countless delays, even more countless hours of volunteer work, goods and services scrounged wherever they could be found and of course money — $250,000 of it — and declared Dargaville’s new skate park open for business. When it’s empty, it’s easy to imagine you are on the moon, as it’s a landscape of pale grey concrete, ramps, humps, rails and plains, but when it’s doing what it’s built for, the new park comes to pulsating, vibrant life in a blur of impossible manoeuvres on equally impressive machines, including skateboards, unicycles, push scooters and BMX bikes and some very athletic participants. One of the more unique aspects was that the people who use it pretty much designed it. When the concept was first mooted in 2007, a group of young skaters sat down with builders and architects and basically showed them what they wanted. Building contractor John Vuletich of Vuletich Engineering said right from the start, the town’s young people were involved. “The young people who were going to use it came up with the ideas and the plans, submitted them to the architects and then together, we designed the park around their ideas. The kids were great to deal with all the way through and it’s

really a tribute to them that we have finished up with something they actually want to use — that they helped design.” He said while the original quote was just over $265,000, the final project will come in under budget, even with the weather slowing things down and he said he was delighted with that. The Kaipara Recreational Facilities Trust took on the project after securing almost the entire funding from the Lotteries Commission, The ASB Trust, the Kaipara District Council, plus other donations and then managed the project to its completion and Saturday’s launch. More than a 100 people who gathered for the event from all over
the Kaipara, Whangarei and Auckland, heard special tributes to committee treasurer Darleen Lang, contractor John Vuletich, original committee members and many organisations who supported the venture during the seven years it took to complete. Darleen Lang paid special tribute to Mr Vuletich whom she described as ‘way more than just a contractor’, adding he had spent countless personal hours on the project. The 1,000 square metre park next to the swimming pool in Selwyn Park is finally up and running and in the words of one out-of-town skater, it is a ‘true multi-purpose new skate park the town can be proud of.’

“We had a huge range of people, locals I had not seen for years as well as people from all over Kaipara and further afield,” said WAG spokesperson, Lorraine Rowland. “The event exceeded all our expectations and people commented that it was totally spectacular.” For the first time the event was run in two sessions, a matinee and an evening gala performance and prizegiving. The supreme prize went to design students Mia Tong and Kohl Tyler-
Dunshea with their sci-fi entry named Gastrodopian Race. A creation of wire, plastic, paint and polystyrene, it depicted a human carrying a giant shell as a home, and earned them tickets to the WOW wearable arts event in Wellington next month, along with accommodation and flights. “We had great sponsorship and entries from all over the district and it has become apparent that the event is now firmly set in the Kaipara calendar,” said Lorraine. ¢

Forty years since Annie was last in town u by Alan Wheatley
It has been 40 years since the Kaipara has heard the songs of Irving Berlin’s hit musical, Annie Get Your Gun, but from the end of September, the iconic musical will be on stage at the Dargaville Little Theatre.
p Ruawai farmer Greg Scott brings womaniser Frank Butler to life alongside Deborah’s Steele’s portrayal of the winsome Annie Oakley, during rehearsals of the Dargaville Little Theatre’s production of Annie get your gun.
Director Keith Allen says a musical this size is always a challenge. “In the old days, we had a huge choice of singers and actors lined up waiting, now we’re lucky if barely enough to cast a show actually audition.” Musical director Julianne Parkinson agrees. “It’s not that there is no talent out there, people just don’t apply, or worse, have no idea they actually can perform, when in fact they are brilliant. It’s one of the reasons we haven’t done many musicals.” The 1950s comedy is loosely based on the life of wild west sharpshooter Annie Oakley and
along with being a Broadway smash, later became an academy award winning movie. With a cast of 34, Keith says everything about the show is big. “We’ve had to pay big royalties for the script rights and with costumes, lighting and other costs, were up in the six thousands just to put it on, and we’re also up against the clock to get it all ready to go on time — it’s just a big production.” Rehearsals are in full swing and the show will open on September 21st for eight performances including two matinées, with tickets on sale now at Dargaville Curtain and Sewing Centre.

Fundraising never tasted so good!
A lot of hard dune preservation work completed by members of the Baylys Beach Society and students from Dargaville Intermediate School has been ruined by trail bike riders.
It may have been the early spring sunshine, but Dargaville came alive last Friday to the sound of fundraising for worthy causes. The Cure Kids Red Nose day was in full swing with both ASB and BNZ banks doing their bit with excellent food on sale. The BNZ, known for their fundraising BBQ’s, had a lunchtime sausage sizzle that was well patronised with staff hard at it on the grill plate, while down the road and in support of their colleagues, ASB staff were selling an excellent array of homemade cakes,
p Members of the Baylys Beach Society and students from Dargaville Intermediate School’s environmental studies class at work on beach dunes
Around 18 Year 7 and 8 students from Dargaville Intermediate School joined members of the Baylys Beach Society recently, to help plant stabilising vegetation on some of the steeper dunes at the beach. The students were from the school’s environmental studies class, and teacher Diane Papworth said in just over half a school day, the students planted more than 800 Spinifex and Pingao plants, supplied from the society’s stock of 1100 plants, donated by the Northland Regional Council. Society spokesperson Maurice Weatherall, says the work on the Chasers Gorge part of the beach entrance was also fenced off, but trail bikers still got in and rode through the new plantings,
causing damage estimated at more than $500. “We struggle to get funding and plants and the work is a labour of love. The NRC has been really generous in supplying the plants and fencing but to have this happen is just heartbreaking.” Maurice says he hopes someone can identify the culprits and let him know, as not only is it the hard work that is destroyed but the bikes also endanger the very existence of the dunes if they can’t be preserved. “Both the Pingao and Spinifex sandbinding grasses are extremely hardy and survive the elements well, but must be allowed to get a proper hold if our work is to be successful.” ¢

According to Wikipedia Father’s Day was inaugurated in the United States in the early 20th century to complement Mother’s Day in celebrating fatherhood and male parenting. After the success obtained by Anna Jarvis with the promotion of Mother’s Day in the US, some wanted to create similar holidays for other family members, and Father’s Day was the choice most likely to succeed. There were other persons in the US who independently thought of Father’s Day, but the credit for the modern holiday is often given to Sonora Dodd, who was the driving force behind its establishment. Sonora Smart Dodd. Its first celebration was in the Spokane YMCA on June 19, 1910. Dodd’s father, the Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, was a single parent who raised his six children there. After hearing a sermon about Jarvis’ Mother’s Day in 1909, she told her pastor that fathers should have a similar holiday honouring them. It did not have much success initially but eventually, the day was made a permanent national holiday when President Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972.

For many Kiwi fathers their greatest joy is their children, so to be recognised by a special day is almost an embarrassment as they cannot believe their luck at becoming fathers in the first place. In recognising fathers with a gift — it is the thought that really counts — a hand-made card from their five-year-old can hold more value than a bottle of the finest malt whisky. So when choosing a gift for the special man in the family think about what they take delight in or what occupies them in their spare time when they are not working. ¢

The eatery, which promises an exotic, flavourful menu drawn from the rich culinary traditions of northern Thailand, was blessed by a trio of traditional Buddhist monks, in a ceremony which has been used to auspiciously favour new endeavours such as this for centuries. The blessing is enacted to assure good fortune, and to show respect for the traditional Buddhist faith of Thailand. The monks travelled from the buddhist temple in West Auckland, but all three are originally from Thailand, and are staying here in New Zealand as part of a sabbatical exchange. Proprietors Donald and Thanyalak presented an offering of freshly prepared food to the trio — a selection from a menu which is sure to introduce Dargaville folks to new realms of

The name itself — Raan A Haan p A blessing for good fortune is an auspicious start Thai Aroi Dee translates into english as ‘Thai restaurant with very good cuisine’ — a promise which the local couple are proud to live up to! Now open — and with the blessing complete — the aim of Raan A Haan Thai Aroi Dee is to treat the people of the Kaipara to new taste sensations, with a menu full of spice and flavour. Fans of Thai cuisine will find many unique dishes here to sample and enjoy — especially those which are perhaps unfamiliar, coming from the northern Thai tradition. It's a fine opportunity to open up new taste horizons, and experience, too, a little of this fascinating culture right here in Dargaville.

Asking the right questions
u by Alistair Hammond
It is that time of the year again when many business owners get a call from their accountant to hear that the financial statements are done. And while most business owners understand their Profit and Loss statement, the Balance Sheet can sometimes be a bit murky. A good accountant will take time to walk you through these as they reflect how the business has performed and how much tax needs to be paid. And quite often the financial statements then disappear in the bottom drawer of the filing cabinet. In our view, financial statements should be looked at more closely as they contain a wealth of information that allows the business owner to work smarter, not harder. Or make the right decisions. For instance, how does your gross profit margin compare with the previous years? If it has dropped, do you know why? And if the profit and loss statement shows a positive figure right at the bottom, why is there no cash left in the bank? I recently discussed financial

statements with one of my clients — we’ll call him Moe and he runs a tavern. We spoke about how the cash flows through his business and how he lives a good life from it, a very good life. We also discovered that he had to make some significant changes to keep his business going. To put it simply, while the band was playing, the ship was sinking. It’s all about asking the right questions. Further, your business banker should be able to give you some insights into how the business has performed. At Westpac, we love to analyse financial statements and then discuss the outcome with our clients. If you’ve asked the right questions but did not get the right answers, please give us a call. You’ll be surprised what a set of financial statements can tell you.

First home buyers, it’s a great time to be thinking about purchasing a first home! Yes it’s true! There are a number of factors that mean now is quite possibly the best time for buying and saving by paying your mortgage off rather than paying the landlord for rent. House prices are still low in rural New Zealand, the property market having had a large gain has now levelled off, but this will not be the case for ever and it is just a matter of time before prices start heading upwards again. Interest rates are also comparatively low in terms of where they have been in recent times. It is important to discuss all options available with your bank or mortgage broker, for example, to fix at a very competitive rate for a home loan for the appropriate number of years. In addition to these two factors there is a potential for those first home buyers who contribute to KiwiSaver to access part of their funds. They may also qualify for a first home subsidy administered by Housing New Zealand. To withdraw some of your KiwiSaver savings to help buy your first home you have to have been a KiwiSaver member for three years or more. The amount you are able to withdraw consists of your individual contributions, any employer contributions and any investment returns. The Government’s $1,000 kickstart and any annual Government contributions cannot be included in a First Home Withdrawal. These funds remain in your KiwiSaver and continue to grow. The First Home Withdrawal is paid directly to your solicitor before settlement. If you purchase a home before you have been a KiwiSaver member for three years, you will no longer qualify for a first home withdrawal. If you have been a contributing
KiwiSaver member for three years or more, you may also be entitled to a First Home Subsidy. The First Home Subsidy is $1,000 for each year you have been a contributing KiwiSaver member, up to a maximum of $5,000. The First Home Subsidy is administered by Housing New Zealand and is paid directly to your solicitor on the day of settlement. If you are purchasing a property with someone else, you may both be eligible to withdraw from your KiwiSaver funds and for a first home subsidy. So as you can see it is a very good time for first home buyers to get into the property market and take that step. Call your bank and see what they can do for you. Call Hammonds Law to discuss how your property purchase will run from start to finish and how we will help you prepare the required documentation for your KiwiSaver withdrawal and First Home Subsidy. ¢

Paparoa now hosts a one-stop shop for a wide variety of marine delights, thanks to the opening of Zephyr Oyster farms processing plant and retail outlet. Gerrard of Zephyr, along with Michelle Kingi, are manning the Paparoa main street business, after taking over the vacant former butcher's shop two months ago. The premises have undergone a thorough revamp to suit the new role, already proving popular with locals and travellers, although the later might miss the discrete signage on the front window. Gerrard sources his oysters from his own Kaipara farms. “Our mussels come in from the Coromandel at present and we are looking at other Northland sources,” he said. “Our whole aim is to source our seafood locally.
“We have flounder coming in from Pahi on a Wednesday morning, and we also bring in Kina on that day. Our other wet fish comes from Whangarei.” When the Kaipara Lifestyler called, there was a tempting array of hoki, blue moki and ling along with the mussels and oysters on offer. “We are all about the catch of the day,” said Michelle. The Zephyr Oyster Farms retail seafood shop is open from 10am to 4pm, Monday to Friday. “Once daylight saving starts, we will be looking at extending the hours a little,” Gerrard added. ¢

Letter to the Editor Dear Ratepayers On Tuesday 20 August my wife and I attended a meeting at the lighthouse regarding the Kaipara district’s future. Two commissioners out of the three attended and chaired the meeting. Whatever decisions are made, it will impact on where people want to and can live, where young people think they can get jobs. The presentation and the discussions appeared to be centered around the wider economics of Northland, Northland having a unified voice for central Government, cost savings from duplications e.g. District plans, economies of scale for roading etc.
What was lacking from the meeting was the social impact of being taken over, amalgamated, absorbed or whatever words you want to use. No doubt yes, there would be savings. With no Council, CEO, probably the majority of Council staff gone, Council’s main contractors Downer, Transfield would bring efficiencies by downsizing and bring in staff as required and losing their local administration staff. The catch cry would be cost savings, bigger is better. Would any money saved; — go towards our rates? — give us extra services?
— Would savings be spent here? In other words, would savings made from us, come back to us? There is always a social cost whenever something is taken away from communities, e.g. in Dargaville our youth can no longer obtain their driver’s licenses, and they have to go to Whangarei. The fallout from this is there is only ½ the amount of young people obtaining their driving licenses, for various reasons, cost, time, etc. The young people are still driving, as living in a rural area, you need to be able to drive to get to work.
This decision is having a huge impact. Yes, this has saved money, but what is it costing? The social effects of any decisions made, takes time to impact as some are visible and many are invisible. This is a part of a wider issue that needs to be thought about by all involved. Andrew & Jeanette Wade
