Kaipara support for kauri funding u by Paul Campbell
A combined regional council call on central government for major new funding to combat kauri dieback disease has received strong endorsement from affected landowner, and Kaipara Mayor, Jason Smith.

Dr Smith, who is battling kauri dieback on his Ruawai farming property has supported a joint letter lamenting government’s decision not to provide funding this year for a national programme to stop the disease spreading through a soil-borne organism that eventually kills the tree. That letter says despite allowing $20.75 million for four years for strategic science there was no
additional funding in the budget for operational management to stop the spread of kauri dieback, which meant that the Department of Conservation could not ramp up efforts to fight it at the coalface. It has been sent to Biosecurity minister Damien O’Connor and Minister of Conservation Eugenie Sage from Northland Regional Council, Auckland Council and Waikato, and
Bay of Plenty regional councils, urging reconsideration of operational funding for the National Pest Management Plan for Kauri Dieback. “While Kaipara District Council is not a signatory of the letter, I am fully supportive of the need to do everything we can to protect the Kaipara kauri stand,” said Dr Smith. continued on page 3 …

p West coast friends and neighbours at Baylys Beach recently enjoyed a mid-winter potluck dinner hosted by the Baylys Beach Society. The tasty idea was inaugurated by Community Connections, a subgroup of BBS who seek out ways for the Baylys community to make new connections. More than 80 adults and children disregarded the winter blues and were treated to a great night out with an amazing array of homemade foods, and a local band providing entertainment. Everyone was stunned at the amount, quality, and selection of foods to share says BBS Chairperson Cheryl Carmichael. “A comment I heard from so many people was ‘I never realised there were so many children at Baylys now’,” said Cheryl. “This was pleasing as the next big community project the BBS is undertaking is the process of developing a playground at Baylys Beach for children of all ages”.

Dolphin consultation concern

The Department of Conservation and Fisheries New Zealand Threat Management Plan review to protect Hector’s and Maui dolphins have stunned local fishers on the Kaipara Harbour because of the number of responses received.
p Radio New Zealand reporter Lois Williams and Mayor Jason Smith medicating kauri diebackinfected trees on Dr Smith’s farm, for an early documentary on the disease
“The kauri tree was for a long time the logo for the KDC and is symbolic of the district. We have kauri dieback on the farm that has been in my family for 150 years, and the notion of doing nothing is not an option.” Dr Smith has already undertaken an initiative to fight the disease on his property. The four regional councils are lobbying the government after a report stating that “in the absence of a well-resourced national programme, kauri dieback will continue to spread unabated. The impact of the organism in iconic forests and highly valued ecosystems is likely to
be very significant. Delays in operational management and activities increase disease risks.” The ministers have been told: “The kauri is iconic to all New Zealanders. It is the prodigy of Tane Mahuta, god of our forests, and Maori perform karakia for this iwi treasure, but it’s dying, and we don’t have the money to save it. We need a well-funded national kauri protection programme”. Biosecurity minister Damien O’Connor has said officials were considering the funding requirements for the National Pest Management Plan, which will require cabinet approval. ¢

DEBBIE EVANS
Debbie Evans is serving her third term on the Health Board, initially as a Government appointee and then publicly elected.
The consultation was launched on June 17 and closed on August 19 after public meetings were held to discuss the plan from Dargaville in the north to Invercargill in the south. “We received more than 13,000 submissions by web, email and post. Additionally, a petition of around 76,000 signatures was handed into parliament,” said the director of Fisheries Management, Stuart Anderson. Hector’s and Maui dolphins are among the world’s rarest and face a range of human-induced threats, including fishing, seismic surveying and the disease toxoplasmosis. Options within the consultation included increasing the boundaries of marine mammal sanctuaries, extending restrictions on trawling and set netting in areas where the dolphins live, further restrictions on seismic surveying and seabed mining in areas and developing an action plan to deal with toxoplasmosis. However, Kaipara fishers surveyed by this writer have questioned the
extent of the survey into the public domain, with an obvious huge input from outside the fishing industry. Common comment was that “almost 90,000 responses mean for sure there are signatures in there — many, many thousands of them on purely emotional grounds. They are certainly not based on any sort of practical fishing experience.” The fishers concerned did not want to be identified until they have completed plans to form “a new industry association”, which they say will be a voice against increasing “red tape affecting commercial fishing.” Mr Anderson says “New Zealanders care deeply about finding solutions to this issue, and that’s been reflected in the many submissions we’ve received from all perspectives throughout the consultation. “Fisheries New Zealand and the Department of Conservation will now carefully examine all the feedback we have received and incorporate that into advice for ministers on finalising the Threat Management Plan and the measures that will support it.” ¢

Exam papers a thing of the past u by Andy Bryenton
Dargaville High School Students studying certain subjects will no longer sit a pen-and-paper examination to gain their qualifications for 2019. History and Media Studies exams will now be completed in a digital format, reflecting the changing face of education and the technological world. Since 2014 more than 30,000 secondary school students have sat at least one digital exam and the New Zealand Qualifications Authority is expecting to further the range of subjects available digitally in 2020. During the last few years, many subjects at DHS have moved into the digital space through using tools such as Google Classroom, but this is the first time there will be the opportunity for students to sit their end of year exams digitally. Students have welcomed the opportunity, saying they feel more comfortable writing an essay on a computer than writing it by hand. In
Media Studies and History, students are used to submitting essays for internal assessments digitally, so it makes sense to give them the same opportunity with their external testing. They will sit these exams on computers that have had their internet access removed so that there is no opportunity to cheat by searching out answers online. According to the New Zealand Qualifications Authority’s (NZQA) deputy chief executive of digital assessment transformation, Andrea Gray, the end of year exam mitigates for cheating by using a special web browser interface where the software monitors students’ behaviour as well as recording answers. The days of ‘turn over your test papers now’ may be all but numbered.

Dargaville gym in fitness face-off For the first time since their opening, Dargaville’s HFS Functional Fitness gymnasium have entered teams in one of New Zealand’s toughest tests of fitness, strength and endurance; Tribal Wars.
p Dargaville athletes proved tough enough to get through a demanding course of fitness challenges at Tribal Wars — and have a great time, too!
The nationwide contest, now in its sixth year, pits teams from gyms across the country against each other in rigorous tests and feats of strength. For example, competitors were asked to complete a 10-metre handstand walk, then race through a parkour ‘freerunning’ course complete with tricky obstacles. Another event saw them transition from fast-paced rope skipping to lifting a heavy weight bar. The aim is to blend all aspects of overall fitness into a contest which does not favour one particular form of conditioning.
Dargaville’s contingent consisted of two teams of four, who headed down to Hamilton to compete last Saturday, August 24. Each team consisted of two male and two female athletes, all of whom have been putting in the hard yards and extra hours for the six weeks preceding the tourney. Both athletes and trainers agree; having a competition goal is very motivating, and despite the toughness of the challenge, it was more than worth the intensive prep and the trip to take part in the Tribal Wars contest. ¢

Celebrating the poets’ art Poetry appreciators and fans of lyrics and verse gathered at the Kauri Museum in Matakohe last Friday, August 23, for the celebration of National Poetry Day. The annual event came with an open mic ‘poetry jam’, as well as a more formal competition to crown the Kaipara’s top bard. National Poetry Day seeks to encourage people to read, write and appreciate New Zealand’s rich poetic history. From the lyrics of the songs sung by early settlers around campfires to the classics of the genre penned by the likes of James K Baxter and local resident Sam Hunt, through to the work of songwriters like the Finn brothers and Dave Dobbyn, verse is part of the nation’s soul. An enthusiastic audience came along to hear the five finalists of the Kaipara-wide competition recite their works, interspersed with other poets (and even the chair of the Kauri Museum board himself) taking the mic. The winner for 2019 was the Kaipara Lifestyler’s own Liz Clark, with the poem On the Shores of Gold, an allegorical and historical look at the loss of environmental and cultural taonga during the days of the kauri timber ‘gold rush’. Helen James was highly commended for her Paparoa Ladies Limerick and also received a placing for Hope Floats Past the Pahi Regatta. Christel Jeffs made the finals with Hands of an Immigrant, while Maggie Buxton also achieved a finals spot with The Will. Northland MP Matt King, Kaipara Mayor Jason Smith and a delighted group of St John officials and volunteers were joined by the generous donors who have made the placement of this first response vehicle possible. Both Pub Charity and the Northern Wairoa Hotel had staff and management present as the bright yellow custom-made VW emergency vehicle was blessed, both with a prayer and dedication in Te Reo Maori and with the Lord’s Prayer, signifying the history of St John as a knightly order. The local St John team agrees that this new machine is a game-changer, able to swiftly respond to emergencies

Tragedy on the Kaipara bar
In the boot-prints of Sir Ed u by Andy Bryenton
u by Liz Clark
The Kaipara Harbour in the earliest days of European settlement claimed more than its fair share of lives and 179 years ago this month, the 161-ton brig Sophia Pate came to grief on the south bank with the loss of 21 souls — several of them children. Captained by George Harrison the vessel was chartered in Auckland in August 1841 by Irish Wesleyan immigrants who had purchased land from iwi in the upper reaches of the Kaihu Valley. James Salter, a respectable jeweller, his wife and 10 children joined the wives and families of George Stannard, a cabinet maker, and John Wilkinson. Unbeknown to any on-board the vessel as it left first for Kororareka en route for Kaipara on August 12 — it would be their last voyage. Carrying 25 passengers and six crew the brig eventually arrived at Kaipara Heads on August 30 and stood off until the weather was clear late the next day. Captain Harrison was unfamiliar with the treacherous waters at the harbour entrance and made a fateful decision to attempt entry by the south channel. At 4pm on August 31 1841, the vessel struck a sandbank, and by 10pm the sea was breaking over it and washing terrified passengers and crew overboard. All were drowned except for John Wilkinson junior, then 15 years old, Captain Harrison and six members of

the crew. Harrison, in a later account, stated he and the crew buried the bodies of several passengers and their children in the dunes at South Head. Young John Wilkinson, according to a descendant, carried the Wilkinson family bible on-board the Sophia Pate and held on to it during his ordeal. Reverend James Buller, then based in the Kaipara, took Wilkinson in and raised him to adulthood. Today all that remains of the vessel lie under several metres of Kaipara sand while a tattered family bible is in the care of the Alexander Turnbull Library in Wellington. ¢

p From Ruawai to Ruapehu and beyond — students visited the snowy Central Plateau for some adventure tourism excitement
Ten year 12 students set out on August 18 to face the mid-winter elements of the Central Plateau, at a centre named for our nation’s most famous explorer and mountaineer. Students say that the week-long course held a lot of challenges and that the activities on offer collectively pushed them out of their comfort zones. One attendee, Ronan, says that the biggest thrill for him was a descent down an icy waterfall by rope. “My highlight of the week was going abseiling off Taranaki falls, which was about 30 metres; this was my highlight of the week because it was a new thing
that I had never done before, and it had a great view,” he says. Fellow classmates, Hunter and Olivia, were enthusiastic about another aspect of the trip; the chance to snowboard at Whakapapa ski field. Caving, climbing, high rope walking, skiing and hiking with an overnight stop at the mountainside Mangatepopo Hut rounded out an adventurous schedule. As well as teaching survival and outdoors skills and teamwork, the trip provided a window on the thriving adventure tourism industry for these young trailblazers. ¢

BACK or NECK PAIN? Real Hope For Long Term Sufferers
After twelve years in New Zealand, Teeter Hang-Ups have now established a long term track record with thousands of people throughout New Zealand. Inversion New Zealand was started by Dave and Nancy Hare, Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from degenerated discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it. To him surgery was never an option as long as he still could walk, there was hope. “While on an overseas trip I discovered the Teeter Hang-Ups for the first time, when I tried it, the pain completely disappeared and I was pain free for about 30 minutes. I never would have believed it would fix me completely as specialists had told me it was irreversible, but I now knew I had a place to go every time I wanted some welcome relief. To my surprise the more I used the table the longer the pain stayed away, until after nearly three months the pain was completely gone, after spending large amounts of money on everything I could find I finally had found something that worked and it was something I had never heard of sorting it out for me in a very short period of time.
Inversion NZ Ltd 0800 62 62 83 www.inversionnz.co.nz
Once I was sure it really worked I decided to introduce Teeter into New Zealand to help spread awareness of the one thing that truly helped me. Over the years I have helped tens of thousands of people in New Zealand get some serious relief and have seen results in not only backs, but necks, hips, knees, posture, circulation and lots more.
Inversion helps to: • Relieve Back Pain • Relieve Neck Pain • Relieve Muscle Tension • Stimulate Blood And Lymph Flow • Improve Posture • Increase Flexibility
The results from what inversion does is nothing short of miraculous in areas we never thought possible, I believe there is a place for these in every single home regardless of if you have back issues or not. We have introduced them into a number of schools which are using them for their special needs children, the blood to the brain helps these kids and the results are excellent. What this means for the aging population is that it helps maintain the health of the brain as we all get older. I would not have believed the results had I not tried it for myself, and I would still be suffering to this day. This is why we travel the country showing people and letting them see for themselves how great it is and how life can be once you’re pain free again.”

IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW THE TEETER TABLE WORKS
Discs:
It uses gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, they rely on trans fer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to de-hydrate.
Posture: Poor
posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; similar to the wheels out of alignment on your car. Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory, as it constantly pulls the muscles back to where they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and eventually come back into alignment, using the table daily, does not allow the muscle memory to pull them back out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there.
De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the de-hydration causes degen eration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. It separates the nerve roots far more effectively and This is pure logic, if a machine is out of returns quality of life
Muscles: A lot of pain is muscular, when
muscles are stressed they become tight which restricts the flow of blood and lymph through the muscles so toxins build up, Co2 and Lactic Acid. Traction opens up the muscles, Rhythmic Traction, is a gentle rocking motion that stimulates circulation and encourages blood flow through the muscles, which clears the lactic acid into your lymph system where it stimulates lymph flow and deals with it. Most people with serious neck issues see a large improvement after only one treatment.
alignment it does not last long, the only difference between the body and a machine is that the body is constantly repairing itself, however if the wear and tear on the body is greater than the body’s ability to repair itself, it is a slow decline. The Teeter slowly brings the body out of its decline and allows the body to repair itself, resulting in a far healthier life.
If you are serious about investing in your health and really sorting your issues out, come see us at one of our local roadshows, you have nothing to lose and chances are, a lot to gain.

Our Back Pain Expos We host a number of back pain expos throughout the country almost every weekend, these expos are a way for people to try out a Teeter Inversion Table and feel the beniefits for themselves in a way that is instructive and informative. It is also a great way for people who already own an Inversion Table to come along and get a refreshment course on the use and operation of their Table and clear any questions they have about it. Sessions run continuously from 10am to 4pm and there are no bookings required, just come along at a time that suits you. There may be a wait during certain times and in these instances chairs are set out for anyone waiting for a turn, or anyone who just wants to ask us a few questions. We strive to cover the entire country and always try to book the most accessible venues we can. Anna Curnow — standing for Kaipara
David Wills — ‘a voice of experience’
I was first elected to the council in the West Coast Central Ward in 2016, and now with the new boundaries, I am standing in the Otamatea Ward for re-election.
u by David Wills
My connection to the Otamatea Ward runs deep. Both my daughters went through Otamatea High School, and I was on the school board for three years. I live in Ruawai on a dairy farm with my partner Garth. I have been active in the Ruawai community, leading the group that established the Ruawai Stopbank Trail. Together with a group of cycling enthusiasts, I now chair the Bike the Kaipara Trust, whose mission is to support the development of a walking and cycling trail network across our district. Small communities are the heart of our district. I believe that the council should be walking alongside our communities, helping to identify a vision and enabling the fulfilment of that vision. What happens in a community is primarily the business of those who live there — council’s job is to help make that real. The last term has also cemented my commitment to a responsible approach to debt. Council will always need to borrow to fund the development of infrastructure that lasts for many generations. However, this needs to be within sensible limits with a keen eye on affordability for ratepayers. Council’s
p Anna Curnow
infrastructure is ageing and needs significant work. Anyone who drives on our roads knows that. A continuing focus for council needs to be the ongoing lifting of standards around our roading network, our ageing wastewater, stormwater and drinking water systems and our recreational facilities. If reelected, you can expect me to drive this work on your behalf. I’m committed to our beautiful Kaipara District, our people, our communities, our environment. Please take a look at my website voteforanna.co.nz for more. ¢

I feel passionately about the West Coast and Central areas of Kaipara, born in Te Kopuru and growing up on the family farm at Mahuta. Now part of the third generation to farm in the Kaipara, I am standing for council to offer many years of business and management experience to my fellow citizens. “We need strong local leadership to ensure we get our share of local and central government funding. We also need to support a strong and vibrant Dargaville, ensuring that our local retailers and service providers remain here and thrive. As your councillor, I will fight to ensure that community services such as schools, sporting facilities and health support remain available to all.“ There is roughly $25m allocated for roading in Kaipara, and I would make certain we p David Wills are getting as much ‘bang for our buck’ as possible, while also performance as councillor, and look making sure that our area gets its fair forward to your feedback on my progress. share of funding. Kids take centre stage
Pioneer Park steps up
Saint Joseph’s School is promoting self-confidence and showcasing the many talents of their students with a forthcoming ‘St Joes’ Got Talent’ variety show.
u by Andy Bryenton
Northland and Auckland’s up and coming stars of rugby clashed in an exciting championship match this past weekend — the first of many significant games to come for Dargaville’s Pioneer Rugby Park.
p Auckland’s U19 squad clashed with Northland’s in last Saturday’s big game, with possible future All Blacks taking the field
p Practice makes perfect as Saint Joseph’s students get ready for a music and fun filled talent show
As the big night approaches, teacher Carla Hill says that both the kids and the faculty are pitching in to entertain the public, as well as for a greater cause. Carla says that one of the school’s core values fits in perfectly with the concept of a fun and varied talent show. ‘Flourish in faith, hope and love while realising our gifts and talents’ is a strong principle at the Dargaville school, and those involved with show preparations agree that fostering personal growth is as important as raising money for a planned senior’s trip to Wellington, the seat of government. “We’re giving them the opportunity to step outside their box. Kids are stepping up and saying that they want to give it a go. Events like this teach life long lessons in self-confidence.” Every class in the school will perform on Friday, September 13, with 10 finalist acts also taking the stage. A
lively mix of song, K-dance, music and acting is promised on a bill with ‘100 per cent tamariki participation’. It is the first such talent show produced by the school, and the purpose behind it, that senior’s trip, is an opportunity for another good lesson. “We’re helping each other, coming together as a school,” says Carla. Tickets for the show are on sale now at Saint Joseph’s School office. ¢

The final whistle sounded with Auckland ahead 36–0. It is by no means the end of big games this season at Pioneer Park. As part of a programme to bring exciting top-level rugby to our regions, there will also be another great match on September 21, as Northland challenge the Bay of Plenty here in Dargaville. The engagement between the under 19s teams may have been played in either Whangarei or Auckland in other seasons, but for 2019 the competition came to Dargaville, where the threat of thunderstorms did little to dampen the enthusiasm of spectators. Auckland pushed hard from the first whistle, displaying bursts of speed and power, which found hard-won gaps in a stalwart Northland defence. This aggressive approach saw the tries drop over the line for Auckland, though the blustery west wind hampered many attempts at kicking that elusive conversion. Northland

SPRING HEALTH ADVERTORIAL
Stop smoking this spring
100
Spring is here, and it’s time to make a change. If giving up smoking cigarettes is high on your list, there’s no time like the present to switch to a programme, which will show nicotine the door. One of the now established ways of slowly reducing nicotine while avoiding the stress and side effects of going ‘cold turkey’ is using a vaporiser or vape. Statistics from the British National Health Service say that on average, using a vape is 95 per cent less harmful than smoking cigarettes. That is a huge advantage when trying to quit, as it means that you are immediately doing less cell damage to your lungs. The second significant advantage is that the dosage of nicotine, the addictive component in cigarettes, can be reduced bit by bit until there’s none at all. The vape also fills the psychological gap; there’s still the semblance of smoke, something in your hand, a small ‘ritual’ of time taken out of the day to relax. Kiwi studies prove it outperforms patches and gum as a quitting mechanism. Harvard University in the US published a study which showed that 18 percent of people using a vape as a pathway to quitting smoking managed to do so for good, first try. That’s better first-try statistics than any other method. Locally, your Dargaville vape store is B’arch Wear. Rapid growth in technology and range has seen the team here become local experts in finding a good vaping match to help folks quit smoking. With many flavours, vape accessories and designs on hand, they can walk you through a programme that will help you quit cigarettes. Come and have an obligation free consult soon, and be smoke-free for summer!
IT’S NOT A TARGET THERE IS A FULL TIME PRIVATE CLINIC IN WHANGAREI, RUN BY WOMEN FOR WOMEN’S HEALTH PROBLEMS Such as troublesome bleeding; menopause concerns; abnormal smears; pelvic pain; pain or irritation ‘down there’; fertility issues; non–surgery options for prolapse and bladder problems. Many of the common problems can be treated with simple minor procedures done either at the clinic or at Kensington Hospital. The emphasis at the clinic is on making sure women have as much information as possible about their own health on which to base their decisions as to the type of treatment that is best for them. Dr. Rachel Moss, the specialist gynaecologist, can see you to make a thorough gynaecological assessment and discuss options for treatment. A GP referral can be helpful but is not essential.

WHAT MEN WANT Horsepower over handkerchiefs u by Andy Bryenton
Father’s Day is coming and along with it, a chance to bestow love, affection and care on the most important thing in your world. No, we’re not talking about mum and the kids making breakfast in bed for the old man. We’re all about dad devoting some quality time to his car. There’s a terrible, slanderous (and absolutely true) rumour that men tackle the existential angst of mid-life by taking refuge in powerful toys. If it wasn’t scientifically proven that the best cure for the 40-something blues is 300 frisky ponies or more wrapped up under the hood of something impractical, it would be quite a sexist thing to talk about. Here’s another scientific fact. The wind in your hair caused by driving a powerful
convertible with the top down can slow or even reverse male pattern baldness. All right, that may be a little bit made up. However, it is true that one of the leading sectors of retail when it comes to gifts for dad is in the automotive realm. From pieces of old cars made into furniture to automobilia and retro-chic for the man cave wall, through to the tools blokes use to tinker with their pride and joy, Father’s Day gifts have

a strong whiff of high octane petrol. When it means that dads are generous, selfless types indeed. Think about it. While kids get toys to enjoy at Christmas, and Mother’s Day would not be the same without champagne and chocolates just for her, all dad wants (for those rare 24 hours out of 8,760 when it’s all about him) is to keep the car going. With dads being such saintly sorts, focussed on providing transport for all on their one day a year, doesn’t it make sense that they should get a new car for the family to enjoy? THE NATION’S MAIN STREET Awards for outstanding citizens u by Andy Bryenton
The 2019 Kaipara Citizen’s Awards, held on Friday, August 16, commended a group of five generous locals who have dedicated their time and efforts to making our district a better place in which to live. Kaipara Mayor Jason Smith presided over an overwhelmingly positive ceremony at Dargaville’s Lighthouse Function Centre, handing out certificates and commemorative gifts to the winners of this year’s round of accolades for our Kaipara ‘good sorts’. They included Mangawhai community figure John Phillis, for his involvement with enterprises as varied as the town’s Santa parade, harbour restoration efforts and the Mangawhai Activity Zone (to name but a few); Surf Life Saving 50-year long service member Gordon Finlayson; Northern Wairoa St John ambulance service volunteer, station manager and advocate Sally Parkinson, and Maungaturoto’s stalwart of the

A special award was also conferred on a leading citizen in the rural community, Richard Drake, who during the years has served not only with Federated Farmers but also with the NZ Meat and Wool Producers Board, Northpower Trust and the Kaipara District Economic Development Trust. The mayor noted the selfless commitment to service, which all of these citizens have displayed in helping their fellow Kaipara residents. Significantly, one of the gifts received by each winner was a kauri seedling, denoting the seeds of future greatness and growth planted by the actions of those generous enough to serve their community. ¢

Black, grey, or green for the blue stuff u by Andy Bryenton
Kai Iwi lakes are known as the jewel in the crown of the west Kaipara; a stunning natural playground that stands out, even in an area like ours, which is hardly short on scenic beauty. Naturally, tourists and locals flock here to enjoy the outdoors. Moreover, just as naturally, this means the need for amenities. It’s the same around your home if you’re off sewer reticulation. Obviously, keeping the lakes pristine was the first concern when a new ablutionary system was planned for Lake Waikare. Installing tradespeople, Dargaville’s Plumbing and Heating Centre, was pleased to be able to offer solutions from an industry that’s come a very long way indeed since the days of the antiquated septic tank. A ‘green’ solution with chambers to break down waste into a safe and naturally degraded state is now buried under a freshly planted garden by the roadside, and there’s no way nasties can threaten one of the best swimming spots in the country. It’s a similar story where the same professionals were tasked with creating a caravan waste station to serve Kai Iwi’s summer tourists. All this is good news for the farmer and lifestyle block owner, as well as the holidaymaker keen to preserve our natural environment. Systems like those chosen for the recent lakes upgrade project are modular and scalable for the rural home as well, allowing ‘black water’ waste to be safely processed. There are even options for ‘grey water’ (that left over from bathing or cleaning the crockery) to be
p Purifying paradise — when those tasked with protecting Kai Iwi Lakes needed a new wastewater system, protecting the environment was of paramount priority
filtered and reused as irrigation water for plants. For those truly off the grid, there’s even the facility to install pumps and other water management equipment run off solar power or to install a system, which needs no electricity at all. ¢

Setting a new benchmark u by Andy Bryenton
When Can-Am told us that their 2019 Outlander ATV would be more capable, more powerful and more precise than ever, we knew they had a tall order to fill. Then again, the modern era of automotive design has given us some surprises in this department, with new models surpassing their forebears in ways, which we could not have predicted. Indeed, the upgraded 2019 iteration of Can-Am’s popular farming quad looks the part. Fresh angles and a robust, ready-for-anything attitude dominate the design aesthetic, but then again, these machines have always looked sharp. It’s what’s under the skin that really counts. With the 2019 reimagining of the Outlander formula, there have been some significant upgrades. The first of these is power, which is now available from a single overhead cam liquid cooled v-twin. With eight valves (the magic number of four for each piston) and plenty of low down torque, you’ll see 48 horsepower from this mill, and feel it, too, thanks to progressively and automatically locking differentials to ensure less slip and more grip when things get muddy. The best is saved for the steering and suspension, however. With true independent rear suspension allowing the back wheels
to travel directly up and down with no diagonal ‘butterfly’ effect, the back end seems planted like that of a rally truck.
SPRINGTIME IS HERE AND WE’RE HERE TO HELP AS THE SEASONS CHANGE!

The front has also been tuned up, with improved dive-control geometry and a hefty amount of suspension travel, combining to make tight cornering far less stressful. What’s even better, perhaps, is the icing on the cake. All these improvements add up, making
a better all-rounder than the outgoing Outlander; but the cost has not gone up. For some models, it’s now more accessible than ever. That’s the power of massive manufacturing and a testament to the popularity of the Outlander brand worldwide. ¢
