Kauri Museum cuts staff costs u by Paul Campbell

The board of The Kauri Museum has made drastic budget cuts in the face of declining visitor numbers and revenue, which has led to the departure of chief executive officer, Lisa Tolich, and two senior managers.

Awarded for service

Local resident Neville Collins has been awarded the Royal Agricultural Society Medal …

P9

Board chair, Mark Vincent, says the three executives will be replaced by a single general manager in an effort to recover a loss of $181,211 in the 2016–17 financial year — with a further substantial shortfall expected in the 2017–18 period. When once, The Kauri Museum attracted up to 90,000 visitors in a

year, that number has fallen to a bit over 40,000 as a result of the global financial crisis, and more recently a decline in cruise ship visitors travelling north from Auckland, with the majority joining southbound tours. “We would have to draw on more of our reserves if the board did nothing and I hate it like hell, but the size of wages

was the biggest single area of focus. If we did nothing, we would be facing a crisis next year,” said Mr Vincent. “A recent organisational restructuring has meant the departure of two experienced senior managers, while CEO, Lisa Tolich, has also taken the opportunity to move on to pastures anew. continued on page 3 …

Kauri disease reversed u by Jill Dickie

Significantly positive results have been reported by Plant and Food Research scientists — a year on from instigating chemical injections into kauri trees infected by dieback disease in Trounson Kauri Park.

The MPI-funded trials have shown that kauri injected with the chemical phosphite have managed to fight off the disease, and the bleeding lesions on their trunks have healed. After only one injection, healing could be seen after six months — with fresh bark showing underneath old lesions that had crumbled away. “We’ve found that where we’ve injected the trees with phosphite, the lesions have pretty much stopped spreading, and healed. In comparison the trees that we didn’t treat, the lesions have kept growing in most cases,” said Plant and Food research scientist, Dr Ian Horner. “It doesn’t eradicate the pathogen, but we haven’t seen any reactivation in five years.” Testing is into its second year at Trounson Kauri Park, though it has not yet been approved by iwi to proceed in the Waipoua Forest. DOC confirmed last

month that the fungal pathogen had infected a tree just 60 metres away from Tane Mahuta, although the forest giant itself still appears healthy. The organisation is to install physical barriers along boardwalks, increase signage and instigate a feral pig control programme to continue its efforts. Te Roroa’s protection plan for Waipoua includes soil sampling to find out how close the pathogen has crept near Tane Mahuta, and a new aerial survey will begin in spring. “I believe the programme is now heading in the right direction and I hope it is not too late to save the big trees,” said science specialist, Taolo Patuawa. Mr Patuawa, who is now on the Kauri Dieback governance group himself, said Te Roroa and DOC believe Waipoua kauri are the best protected in New Zealand, with high-grade tracks, boardwalks and shoe hygiene stations — so will not close the forest at this stage. ¢

National poetry day

Project Jonah rescue course u by Jill Dickie

Local marine mammal enthusiasts are invited to participate in a training course in December designed to generate skilled volunteers in the community who are able to assist in future beach rescues in the Kaipara area.

p New librarian, Jaime Clarkson, pictured with the poetry display at the Dargaville library. Around 150 events nationwide took part in the Phantom Billstickers National Poetry Day on August 24, organised by poetry-loving volunteers and involving thousands of people in more than thirty towns and cities. In its 21st year — seasoned poets and curious new enthusiasts had the opportunity to discover New Zealand poets, share poems and explore what poetry is about.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Recent stories in the news media appear to be at odds with Grey Power NZ Federation Incorporated’s official policy which follows: Grey Power NZ Federation Inc supports the supply of medicinal cannabis on doctor’s prescription via the Pharmac System. We do not support personal cultivation, recreational use or any other

form of supply — other than through the government-controlled Pharmac system. For a full copy of the policy — readers, should refer to the Grey Power submission to the Misuse of Drugs (Medicinal Cannabis) Amendment Bill dated March 10. Grey Power NZ Federation Inc national president, Mac Welch.

p A volunteer team taking part in a training course

The Project Jonah medic course is offered as a result of the recent whale strandings and is the first time it has been offered locally. Courses have been held in the past in other Northland locations. The day consists of lectures and video presentations about the behaviour and anatomy of dolphins and whales, and some of the reasons they may strand. Rescue techniques will be included, along with key roles and responsibilities at a stranding. The 24 students’ new-found knowledge and skills will be put to the test practising basic first aid on a lifesize inflatable whale, and with rescue equipment. At the end of the course,

students will be able to assist in rescues and act as a role model to untrained rescuers, with their names placed on a call-out database. “We couldn’t do what we do without our volunteers, they make a huge difference to the stranding response,” said Project Jonah communications and volunteer manager, Louisa Hawkes. “The training makes a really big difference when it comes to responding. We exist to empower locals — they’re going to be the first to either discover the stranding or one of the first to respond.” More information, costs and enrolments can be found at projectjonah. org.nz/medic. ¢

Trooper returns home u by Ayla Miller

The body of fallen Special Air Service trooper Adrian Raymond Thomas was welcomed with a moving haka at his former high school Ruawai College.

Council restores foreshore lighting u by Paul Campbell

The Kaipara District Council’s $1.2 million roll-out of new LED street lighting has been modified after concerns over safety and security at the foreshore reserve and camping ground at Pahi.

p Ruawai College students paid tribute to former student and fallen SAS trooper, Adrian Raymond Thomas, as his body was transported home to Kaeo

Adrian’s niece, Kiriana Ruffin, spoke to the packed school hall of her uncle’s life including his sporting endeavours in athletics, boxing cricket and rugby. “Today Adrian is back among his people in Aotearoa and will be laid to rest beside his maternal grandmother at Te Patunga marae,” she said. Deputy principal, Lance Panoho, thanked Adrian’s family for assisting with the repatriation and for Adrian’s friends and community for joining them to pay their respects. This event comes as the government begins the process of bringing home the remains of 36 people eligible for repatriation. The repatriation was called for by a petition on behalf of the group Families of the Forgotten Fallen, from

former soldiers Paul Thomas and Andrew Peters, which asked for the government to bring home the bodies of New Zealand soldiers and their children who are buried in non-Commonwealth war cemeteries. Adrian was buried on May 3 1956, at a Christian Cemetery in Kuala Lumpur and returned to New Zealand on August 21, as part of the Project Te Auraki repatriation campaign, which began in 1976. His remains will be transported to Te Patunga marae near Kaeo in Northland. The service was conducted by SAS chaplain Kevin Herewini and was followed by a tribute for returned serviceman, Chris Robinson and the unveiling of a plaque at the Ruawai cenotaph. ¢

The Pahi Reserve Society asked council for ‘improvements to be made as a matter of urgency, to the street lighting in the camping ground, domain and the wharf area.’ Now council says six of the new lights will be replaced with the High Pressure Sodium (HPS) lights that were there originally. The society complained that the LED lights were a threat to health and safety and the security of property. The wharf area does not have sufficient light to show up anyone in trouble there.’ After a night-time site meeting at Pahi with its roading inspector Jim Hale on Wednesday, August 1, council said: “Post that meeting, we’ve requested the contractor to return six High Pressure Sodium (HPS) lights back on to the (Pahi Reserve) campsite.” Restoration of the much

EITHER WAY IT’S 20K

brighter sodium lights has been welcomed by Pahi Reserve Society deputy chair, Ralph Williams. “I am very pleased to see that council has listened to our concerns and has taken the appropriate action. Having adequate lighting in this busy public area is vital, particularly for maritime safety, the wharf and our busy boating launch facilities. The annual Pahi Regatta, which attracts several thousand people over two summer days at anniversary weekend would have been in serious jeopardy under the inadequate LED light fixtures.” As to other concerns from Kaipara residents, council says “phase two of the project is a light survey of the ‘dark zones’, (to see if) additional LED lights need to be added or positional changes to bulb direction need to be added to increase the spread and direction of lights.”

HOW WE ALLOCATE EACH DOLLAR SPENT Along with your KDC and NRC rates notice, you will have received our brochure telling you how your NRC rates and our other income streams help Northland thrive. In case you missed it, the following is what every dollar spent goes towards: - 17c Looking After our Water - 13c Pest Control - 12c Flood Protection - 10c Community and Maori Engagement - 10c Transport - 8c Planning and Regulatory - 8c Land Management - 9c Economic Development - 5c Harbour Safety - 5c Emergency Services and Sports - 3c Civil Defence. The great part for me with our spending over the life of our new Long-Term Plan, is that 58c in every income dollar is being spent directly on Northlands Environment. Approximately 60% of NRC’s income comes from rates, the rest coming from investment income, fees and charges, and government grants.

Race day gallops on

Art with a message

u by Jill Dickie

u by Ayla Miller

After major improvements to the racetrack, the Dargaville Racing Club looks forward to once again holding a community race meeting scheduled for November 16.

Auckland-based ceramic artist Rom Marinkovich is supporting the community group opposed to the proposed Tegel Chicken Farm near Arapohue by auctioning off her art.

p A sunny day at the last meeting was enjoyed by enthusiasts

Unfavourable track conditions after bad weather hampered an otherwise successful meeting last year. It also forced the cancellation of the planned meeting the previous year, and the committee contracted repair work to be done. New drains were installed in a trouble spot across the track and appropriate levels of soil and sand applied before resowing. “The track has been mowed regularly and is the best it’s been,” said Dargaville Racing Club president, Tim Antonio. New memberships are available to show support of the club, and this allows people to have special access and

trackside parking on the day — groups also are invited to reserve a space. “Bookings for corporate gazebos are being taken up until September 3,” said club secretary, Grace Adnitt. In a new competition Ray White Dargaville Fashion on the Field, ladies are encouraged to compete for a major prize of $500 cash. There are other prizes available including categories for men and millinery. Due to liquor licensing restrictions, the club asks that members of the public respect there is no BYO facility at this event. For further information contact dargracing@xtra.co.nz. ¢

Rom Marinkovich painted and glazed the entirely handmade set of porcelain cups and terracotta lidded jar created by Rotorua-based artist, Nicholas Feist. The set was auctioned off on Trade Me and all funds raised will go to the Kaipara Community Association to pay for legal fees to oppose Tegel’s application and to cover the costs of experts to assist in the process. The Kauri Bushman’s Memorial Scenic Reserve track upgrade is almost complete after the historic bullock cart was moved to The Kauri Museum at Matakohe, enabling DOC to continue its work on renovating the track.

cart has been restored and is in its permanent position at the museum, a story connecting the cart to the Kauri Bushman’s reserve is expected to enhance visitors experience to the area. Logging of kauri began in the area in the 1860s and bullock teams were used to haul the heavy logs out of the bush to the Kaipara waterways. During the early to mid-20th century the bullocks were replaced by tractor haulers. A date has not yet been confirmed for when the newly-restored bullock cart will be on display to the public. ¢

The Northland district rarely receives an option to present a medal and association president, Richard Alspach, said he doesn’t recall when one was last presented in the Kaipara area. Neville has been treasurer of the association for around 25 years. “For an organisation like ours the integrity of the financial records and reporting is vital in demonstrating good governance to our members, exhibitors, sponsors and grantors,” said Mr Alspach. Neville established the association’s constitution, maintains communication of promotions through social media, and was instrumental in filling in for the secretary in recent years.

021 051 5344

According to Royal Agricultural Society chief executive officer, Debbie Cameron, the medals are designed to recognise volunteers who give their time freely over an extended period of time, and the Northland district only receives one about every three to four years. “They bestow an honour on worthy people, and provide a really good way of showing appreciation for volunteers,” said Mrs Cameron. “The true measure of the man is that he has done all this quietly and without pretension. We are thankful for his contribution and his friendship,” said Mr Alspach. ¢

International success for drifter u by Ayla Miller

From a shed in Dargaville to the streets of Liverpool, drifting champion Gaz Whiter is showing the world what he’s made of and has won the Red Bull Drift Shifters 2018 event. Whiter beat fellow Kiwis ‘Fanga’ Dan Woolhouse and ‘Mad’ Mike Whiddett, the founder of the competition, en route to the final, where he beat Forrest Wang. The Dargaville driver was one of 11 from around the world to compete in the event’s first venture into the Northern Hemisphere. Drivers were each given 100 seconds to take any route they chose, gaining points for getting close to sensors along the sides of the track and on the objects within it. “This event was crazy,” Gaz said. “It was more than I expected once we hit the course. Walking it was one thing, but driving it was just completely mind-blowing, and with the colours and the lights — it was something I will never forget.” Gaz’s car was built in his father Tony’s shed in Dargaville with the help of Greg Smith Engineering, Craig Nash and Don

Kaipara District Council Public Notice of Statement of Proposal for a New Alcohol Control Bylaw, and Proposed Alcohol Control Areas. Notice is given pursuant to s83 and s86 of the Local Government Act 2002 that Kaipara District Council is commencing the Special Consultative Procedure to obtain community feedback on the Statement of Proposal for a New Alcohol Control Bylaw, 10 existing proposed alcohol control areas and one proposed new alcohol control area. Proposal: Council is proposing a new bylaw that provides a frame work for alcohol control areas. Council is seeking the retention of current alcohol control areas with some modifications to boundaries and times to reflect information provided by Police, legislation changes and district boundary changes. Current alcohol control areas are located at Mangawhai, Ruawai, Dargaville, Te Kopuru, Pouto, Glinks Gully, Baylys Beach, Omamari, Aranga, and Kaihu. A new alcohol control area is also being proposed in Tinopai. A Statement of Proposal is available for inspection and can be obtained from the offices of the Kaipara District Council in Dargaville and Mangawhai, Dargaville public library and community libraries situated in Maungaturoto, Mangawhai and Kaiwaka. They can also be viewed on Council’s website http://www.kaipara.govt.nz where online submissions may also be made.

On this day entry to the museum will be free to encourage local families to visit. Vice president of the museum committee, Raewyn Sills, says the aim of the day is to promote the museum and help foster a sense of ownership from the community. “It is giving local families a chance to see their own history. Often children visit the museum with their schools, and it’s nice for them to share this with their parents.” The walking tracks around Pou tu te Rangi/Harding Park are all now

completed, and Raewyn says the open day is a good opportunity for families to come along and explore and maybe even fly a kite. Food will be available all day from the ‘cafe,’ and Silver Fern Farms have lent the museum their barbecue and donated ingredients for steak sandwiches. The day would not be complete without buskers, ambulance, police and fire brigade personnel on-site to educate the community about their services along with raffles and quizzes for the children. ¢

Greg and the team would like to offer their congratulations to Gaz Whiter on a well earned international title. ENGINEERING

Kaipara daffodil day events

u by Jill Dickie

u by Ayla Miller

Several events will be held in the Kaipara district in the leadup to the 28th ANZ-sponsored Daffodil Day fundraising appeal, and by taking part members of the public will assist in cancer support services and research.

An exhibition entitled Bush, Birds and Water by Geraldine Craw will be showing at the Muddy Waters Gallery from August 31 until September 26.

People may donate online at daffodilday.org.nz or visit any branch of the ANZ or a street collector on Friday, 31 August, to purchase one of the 500,000 fabric daffodils to wear on their lapel. In addition, fundraising events are being held around the community: The Mangawhai Tavern is hosting a quiz night on Tuesday 28 at 7pm. The Club at Mangawhai will host a morning tea on Thursday 30 at 11am. Mangawhai and Kaiwaka will have street collectors available Friday 31. The Northern Wairoa Lions Club is

holding a sausage sizzle with raffles and more at the Dargaville ANZ on Friday 31. Last year this branch raised $5,200. The Paparoa Lions Club will be attending stands from 9am to 4pm at Paparoa and Maungaturoto on Friday 31. There are also collection boxes at grocery stores. Daffodil Day raises awareness of cancer and is the biggest generator of funds for the Cancer Society. “Every dollar collected by our 12,000 volunteers is used to help New Zealand, and New Zealanders beat cancer,” said Cancer Society CEO, Mike Kernaghan. ¢

Geraldine is an artist, poet, and writer — works on the farm, which gives her plenty of inspiration and manages the Packard Motor Museum part-time. “Life can get pretty busy but I try and time-table my week and stick to it,” she says. Geraldine started exhibiting her artwork in the year 2000, with her first exhibition held at the Yvonne Rust Gallery in Whangarei. Since then she has exhibited in different places every few years. “I like working towards an exhibition as it gives me a goal and helps push my art along.” p Geraldine Craw will be exhibiting her work at the Geraldine has painted Muddy Waters Gallery for most of her life and has chosen to take short art courses is walking through the bush. However, she admits the exhibition has variety, rather than full-time study. She describes herself as a and a couple of paintings with surreal ‘Colourist’ and says likes painting elements will be included. “I like people to look at my work the landscape and bush in colours and come away feeling uplifted by what that reflect the emotion of a place they see.” rather than what is there visually To see more of Geraldine’s artwork and dabbles in surrealism. Spring into Spring Blooming good garden tips With spring just around the corner, now is a good time to decide what to plant, so you can enjoy a splash of colour in your garden as the weather gets warmer.

Where is Northlands biggest range of roses?

Spring is a great time to get out and clear up the overgrown borders and gardens you’ve been ignoring during the chilly winter months. Remove leaves and other debris from your gardens to make room for the new plants. If your soil is workable, take the opportunity to dig in five centimetres of organic matter — such as well-rotted manure or compost. Late winter is a good time to give the greenhouse a scrub and clean up any debris from the floor. Disinfecting the inside of the glass gets rid of any pests and diseases that have come along during the winter months. Wash pots and seed trays to help prevent diseases and ventilate your

greenhouse to give it a chance to dry out properly. Before spring hits entirely, give your tools a clean and a sharpen. It not only makes your gardening jobs easier — but lengthens their life and stops the spread of bacteria that can harm your plants. A compost bin is also a valuable asset to have in your garden. It could be a ready-made compost bin or a compost bin you’ve made yourself using spare

bits of wood. It creates a place where you can put your garden waste, lawn clippings and food scraps which can then break down into rich compost with lots of good nutrients for your garden. All you need to do is turn your compost with a garden fork each month to keep it aerated. With all this under your gardening belt, you’ll be ready to take on the new season with a spring in your step. ¢

Spring into Spring ADVERTORIAL

Get the gear ready with CorrosionX Dragging out ‘mission critical’ gear like reel, rods, trailers, outboards and motorhomes from the winter storage can be trouble. Frozen bolts, stubborn electrics, rust in the chassis and corrosion around the engine — all this and more can make springtime chore. When rust strikes, you can spend a few days getting things sorted using ‘cheap’ product. Or you can do what our electrical companies, fishing fleets, rescue helicopters and food producers do. Get some proper CorrosionX! Coat electrics and electronic live, wet or even corroded with CorrosionX for waterproofing. Use CorrosionX Heavy Duty on leaf springs, winches, three-point linkages and Teleflex cables. The products will penetrate into the smallest cavity, drive out moisture and make things work again. After a cold, damp winter under a tarp, this can be the difference between smooth running and annoying repairs. There’s more in store to help dominate our often damp and condensation laden environment.

ReelX for the fishing guys, SpeedX for the keen BMX racers or CorrosionX XD to spray even the inside of a chassis and trailer frame. Commercial grade Rustreconverter LT and high-end Marine Grease round off the product range. Most products are NZ MPI approved to the same class as Lanolin, C11. They are not flammable, never dry or go gunky. CorrosionX Aviation is militarycertified, aviation approved, totally safe over rubber, neoprene, plastic, paint and insulation. Find your local dealer before the rust finds you ! CorrosionX applicators service Northland with all the skills to deploy our product — and even mobile applications for 4WDs, motorhomes, farm bikes, cow sheds, bridges, farm equipment, beach tractors and concrete trucks.

Spring into Spring Tools from the specialists u by Andy Bryenton

Spring is the traditional time to tackle those outdoor tasks, taming the back yard from a riot of weeds and scrub into a semblance of order and serenity. However, here’s the problem — no two back yards are the same. That’s especially true here in the Kaipara, where we run the full spectrum from pocket-sized and manicured lawns through to sprawling gardens, stands of native bush and lifestyle block paddocks. As the Auckland Home Show kicks off — in the not too distant future — there will be plenty of new tools on display, not the least of which are a hot new crop of battery powered outdoor power machines from the likes of top manufacturer Stihl. At the same time, those with massive swathes to cover will be eyeing up zero turn mowers with plenty of new, fuel injected v-twin power to get the job done in a snap. There’s plenty in between, with advances in power, fuel economy and ease of operation changing even the traditional push mower into a precision tool. With so much choice, shopping for the right suite of tools can become a costly exercise. Buying the wrong ones is even more fraught. Get a water blaster too powerful, for example, and you have wasted a fair amount of cash to clean the car. Get one too weak, and your mossy concrete will stay green. It’s the same in each category, so the

best advice is — get some good advice. For this, you can’t rely entirely on the marketing and glossy brochures of any one brand. You’ll need to talk to people who use, take apart, fix, maintain and test outdoor power equipment of every stripe, every day. Just days ahead of spring, we popped in to see multi-franchise outdoor power experts Godfrey’s Mowers and Chainsaws, and found a hive of activity, with new models being assembled and more than a few customers checking in to see the latest and get a good fit for their own properties. The modern way of looking at your yard and lawn care needs is almost like holistic medicine — taking in the whole shed of tools to encompass a variety of jobs. So, from mowers to wood chippers through to chainsaws covering everything from firewood to forestry, spring’s new crop have been tried, tested, inspected and categorised, ready to roll out. It’s

all about getting the combo, which is right for your foliage, terrain and budget

and which will provide safe and easy operation for years to come.  ¢

‘Local treasure’ plans first anniversary The Mangawhai Charitable Opportunity Shop Trust, operating as The Factory, is holding its first year celebration day on October 13. The occasion will be held at the store with music, a sausage sizzle, children’s face painting and more. Mayor Jason Smith will present grant certificates to the nine prior recipients of the trust’s programme. MCOST are now accepting applications for their second round of community grants for October distribution, with the total allocation significantly higher than their first funding round in March of this year. These grants will include three different options — ensuring all worthy community projects, both small and large, are included and carefully considered. The community is invited to attend the celebration day, and be involved in recognising the new recipients of community grants who will be presented with their certificates at the event. FA R M I N G

Test of the toughest u by Andy Bryenton

What do you look for when you buy a new vehicle? If it’s for the high street, you might go for looks. If it’s to tote the family on school runs, safety and capacity. If you own a large boat or a caravan, it’s all about towing power. Moreover, if you’re heading off-road — toughness reigns supreme. It’s very much the same in the world of quad bikes. Here, manufacturers expect that their products will be put through the mangle every time they leave the shed. That counts double if the machine is to be used for farming — an arena where cold morning starts, deep mud, rugged terrain and heavy loads are par for the course, and gentle, tender care is a laughable notion. It is the country for big, tough components, chunky suspension arms, solid welds and bulletproof engines. It’s no surprise, then that most farm quads talk a good game on toughness. The ante has been upped recently by major industry players Can-Am, who have extended their warranty on the Outlander series of quads to five years. Let that sink in, because it’s hard enough to get a five-year warranty on a small hatchback designed to go to the shops and back, let alone a beast like the Outlander range. From the popular 450 to the 100cc Max, the whole stable of Can-Am’s quads have been given the green light for comprehensive cover. You can imagine what this means behind the scenes, as the factories where the Outlander is produced — from its Rotax engine to its tubular frame — will have been inspected from every angle by quality control. Each step of the production line must have been made meticulous to ensure that five years of knocks, bumps, mud, grit, sand, salt, cold, heat, torque and rain can’t wear components down to the point of failure. It’s a formidable

exercise in putting one’s money where one’s mouth is, and it delivers a whole lot of peace of mind to the speculative Can-Am rider. So, too, does another item of good news which must have bolstered Can-Am’s spirits heading into spring. Their flagship SSV side-by-side, the Defender, has topped the Kiwi sales charts for the first time, in a ver y competitive field of competent machines. Between this milestone, the company’s massive and unshakable faith in the toughness of their Outlander line, and a new partnership with ag giant Farmlands to utilise their Farmlands Card — it looks like being a bright yellow springtime for 2018. ¢
