Kaipara landfill fight goes proactive u by Paul Campbell

The Fight the Tip movement opposing the proposed 1,000-hectare landfill for Auckland rubbish in the Dome Valley, a Hoteo River catchment for the Kaipara Harbour, has taken an active part in the Fox River clean-up on the South Island West Coast. Fight the Tip campaigner, Haley Warman, spent four days on the cleanup operation. p Maniacs United put on another crowd-pleasing performance on Saturday, August 3, with a large audience in attendance to watch the stars of Kiwi pro wrestling grapple, throw and suplex their way to victory. In the process, hundreds of dollars were raised for the local Dargaville Volunteer Fire Brigade, with a generous donation from event co-organisers Ray White Jean Johnson Real Estate boosting the take on the door. There was also good news for the Pouto Netball Club, who satisfied the hunger of wrestling patrons and raised funds with a concession stand for half time.

p Communities across the Kaipara District were invited to participate in a series of spatial planning consultations held in Mangawhai, Dargaville and Maungaturoto recently. Kaipara District Council’s planning consultancy team guided interested attendees through the planning process using visual displays and surveys. Residents were asked to fill out a survey and place pins on various boards to reflect aspirations for their community. KDC asked participants to think about what the future generations may need, connectivity (walking, cycling, driving), increasing economic benefits, disposal of waste, protection of towns from flooding and protecting natural assets. Pictured KDC’s consultancy team with some of the display boards.

Kaipara landfill fight goes proactive

School wins a shopping spree u by Paul Campbell

Maungaturoto Primary School has had a windfall after being named the Sport Northland Energize School of The Year, recognition, which came with a cheque for $5,000 to spend on new sports equipment.

p Haley holds litter “that sums up everything for me, in terms of the delicate balance of the environment.”

The area to be cleared of rubbish included riverbanks, river braids and islands across approximately 1,270ha and 64km of coastline. “I cleaned for four days in a row. We were warned to not dig into sand with our hands because sharps and other harmful waste including asbestos, could be found. Sandflies attacked me even with repellent, and I collected lots of rubbish sometimes at every step. Lots of plastic bags, some waste was hard to get to, twisted in branches or halfburied in the sand. I had to leave it in frustration, hoping that someone else will get it one day. “It was heart-breaking that a pristine piece of country had been ruined. We are trying our best to restore it. I was working alongside the amazing NZ Defence Force. That, of course, should never had happened. I now look at what I throw away very, very closely. Every

piece, trying to change my own habits. I hope people do the same.” Progress is being made on the West Coast, and DoC expects volunteer work will finish later this month. “Looking ahead to the future, with another landfill being threatened on the coast in the South Island, I believe tips are not the answer, definitely not near waterways,” said Haley “I am currently fighting the tip which has been proposed at the Dome, near another waterway. This location is ridiculous. We need to urge the government to think smarter, and faster. Potentially we’ve got marine mammals being affected, Maui and Hector’s dolphins, other dolphins, seals, seabirds, and myriad fish species. All could be harmed from toxic chemicals. “Our country is seen and promoted as the clean, green country of the world. Sadly, this is not the reality anymore.”

To win the title and prize, school sports teacher, Julia Neal, made a slide show displaying the many healthy aspects and activities that Maungaturoto School is continuously participating in and developing further. The Energize project is an initiative working primarily with decile one to four primary and intermediate schools across Northland to improve children's physical activity and nutrition, and ultimately to improve their overall health and fitness, while helping schools achieve their education outcomes. The programme was originally developed through Sport Waikato and the Waikato District Health Board, and a pilot was run in Northland in 2013 with 12 schools taking part. Today there is a team of nine Energizers based throughout the

region, working with more than 90 schools, funded by Northland District Health Board and Sport NZ. The Maungaturoto award was “awesome, a good opportunity to continue to get more things for the kids,” said Julia Neal. “Only recently we have had to have a bit of a clean-out of things like balls that go flat and won't pump up. We recently ordered some new gear — so it's very timely.” Miss Neal said the staff and children would have an input into how the prize money will be spent. “We have already had some feedback from the pupils — some rather wild ideas, which I'm not sure will be able to happen though.” With the award only announced last week, a school celebration is still in the planning stage.

Firearms buyback

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Dear Sir, Referring to Bridges and the unsung hero (Kaipara Lifestyler) July 23, by Matt King MP. Come on Matt at least you got unsung hero right — that’s (local resident and bridge campaigner— Ed) Sue Reyland. In 1970 I was driving logging trucks for Joe Watts Logging from the Tinopai Forest to the Whangarei wharf crossing those bridges up to eight times a day. The Department of Public Works was brought in to survey and build twolane bridges. The survey work was done, and then the National Party stopped the work, and pulled the funding. Then

there was every queue, every hold-up, every accident, including the crash that nearly killed Sue Reyland and her daughter. I guess that was due to the National Party not carrying out the rebuild in 1970. If Sue had not kept on and on at the National Government, (former MP) Mike Sabin probably still wouldn’t know about the dangerous situation that existed. Shame on you Matt King for claiming National is responsible for the bridges being built. Good on you Sue. Thank you for being so stubborn. Keep it up. We need more people like you. You make Kaipara a better place.

Matt King MP, replies: I agree that Suzie Reyland deserves recognition for her hard work campaigning for a safer stretch of road at the Matakohe Bridges. That’s why I thanked her in a piece, which appeared in the Kaipara Lifestyler on July 16. I included a picture of myself and Suzie with the last National Government’s Transport Minister, Simon Bridges, under whose watch the project got underway in 2017. Back in 2012, National did work on supporting the case for an upgrade of the bridges. Previous efforts to fix

the dangerous road failed because of low traffic volume, which made it hard for the bridges to compete for NZTA funding against other projects on busier roads around the country. The Northland roading committee (made up of local government representatives) had not advanced a strong enough case before this. As I understand it, the Matakohe Bridges project was successful in getting funding because the National Government ring-fenced spending from the National Land Transport Fund for regional projects, via the Regional Improvements Activity Class.

The first local buyback event operated as part of the police’s enforcement of new firearms legislation was held at Dargaville’s Pioneer Rugby Park on July 30. Despite poor weather, a strong turnout of responsible local gun owners was observed, under the watchful eye of armed officers there to ensure security for the event and the large numbers of firearms surrendered for compensational remuneration under the new laws. Much like other such events already held around the country, Dargaville’s initial buyback, which ran from 3–7pm, was an orderly and peaceful affair, greatly assisted by the ability for firearm owners to pre-register and fill in details online before visiting the drop-off point in person. Noteworthy is the fact that those who missed the event, or who did not bring in all firearms in their possession now prohibited under The Arms (Prohibited Firearms, Magazines and Parts) Amendment Act are not out of options. On the contrary, the amnesty for the surrender of prohibited firearms and accessories lasts until December 30 this year, and many other buyback

events are scheduled for our region in the future, including Maungakaramea Rugby Club on August 21, Waipu Rugby Club on August 28, Barge Park Whangarei on September 4 and another Dargaville Rugby Club engagement on September 18. A full list of prohibited firearms and parts can be found at police.govt. nz/sites/default/files/publications/ prohibited-firearms-and-parts-buy-backprice-list.pdf along with prices for the buyback scheme. Those who wish to surrender firearms direct to police as part of the amnesty should call 0800 311 311 for more information.  ¢

Mangawhai’s call for volunteers u by Paul Campbell

At a recent working bee at the Mangawhai Activity Zone, those present did a count up and found the average age of the volunteers present was a venerable 71 years.

p A recent working bee at the Mangawhai Activity Zone

“It dawned on us that we needed some new blood,” said Mangawhai Activity Zone Charitable Trust chair, Ken Rayward. “We are spreading the word for a younger crowd to come and give a hand. “When I say younger, I’m looking at the families who enjoy the facilities here. Maybe they are in their 40s to 60s — a new generation of helpers. We have some exciting new projects underway. “The 70 age generation challenges the 40, 50 and 60-year-olds to step up and join us in the pursuit of making MAZ the best recreational park in New Zealand. We need a new generation to provide physical time or wise input, and any, but not required, modest financial input.”

He added that the MAZ project was now 10 years in the making and new helpers would carry on into new undertakings that would make sure of the sur vival of the playground’s concept. “MAZ would probably not have even begun if it started today with the many current compliance challenges to be overcome, something we should all appreciate. We now have a number of great breakthrough opportunities, which we want to encourage MAZ supporters to be a part of developing.” Plans are underway for expanding the skate bowl, the addition of a 500-metre Pump Track, clearance of the 10,000-metre walking and bike track, new signage and a MAZ club house. ¢

Playground future in limbo The children’s playground at the Pahi reserve, which was closed because of the danger posed by two large and ageing Norfolk pines, remains padlocked, with no sign of it reopening in the immediate future. The Kaipara District Council has undertaken pruning work on the trees, after concerns from local residents and the Pahi Reserve Committee, which administers the camping area and adjacent reserve area, over unsafe branches. The council parks and recreation management, which cites the two trees as “nationally significant,” says it is examining the possibility of moving the playground from below them. However, independent research indicates the trees are listed ‘of local interest’, and the status of the pines is under discussion by local residents, with a movement to have the trees removed. The council has issued a statement on the issue. “There is still some touch-up work to be done on the pines, and we’ll be getting a risk assessment to assist with decision-making around the playground’s future location,” said council spokesman, Benjamin Hope. Work has also been done on the iconic Moreton Bay fig in the reserve, accepted as ‘internationally significant’. “Remedial works were undertaken by Northland Treeworks Whangarei Ltd,” said Mr Hope.

p One of the Pahi Norfolk pines, showing missing branches

“The end weights of limbs had some foliage removed to lift some of the limbs off the ground. The existing prop has been removed, and as the tree settles, a new prop will be installed. “With ongoing inspection, it’s possible more props may be installed on some other limbs. There was minor work to the upper canopy to keep the tree within its natural shape. Overall condition inspection at pruning was noted as very good, with no further issues.” ¢

A Message from the Ministry of Health Some plumbing fittings have the potential to allow minute traces of metals to accumulate in water that is standing in the fittings for several hours. Although the health risk is small, the Ministry of Health recommends you flush a mugful of water from your drinking-water tap each morning before use to remove any metals which may have dissolved from the plumbing fittings. We are recommending this simple precaution for all households, including those on public and private water supplies.

Election nominations closing soon Nominations for candidates in the forthcoming local body elections close next week at midday, August 16, and “the deadline is rigid with no leeway,” says Kaipara District Council’s electoral officer, Jason Marris. Jason’s formal title is general manager, governance, strategy and democracy, and he says with two councillors Libby Jones in Otamatea ward and Andrew Wade in Dargaville standing down, the field is open. With the final number of candidates still to be determined, he says 13 people attended the latest KDC briefing for potential candidates in Dargaville last week. “The feedback we’ve had from these sessions has been people have learnt a lot, and of course, the key thing is now that once candidates are known the next step is for people to send in their votes.” His advice is echoed by Northland Regional Council electoral officer, Dale Ofsoske, who says anyone thinking about contesting the elections to get their nominations in sooner — rather than later. All four of Northland councils are collectively keen to encourage a diverse range of people to run for office, and typically many nominations are received in the closing days, or even hours, of an official nomination period. “People are quite within their rights to file nominations at any point during that nomination period, but we do encourage

p Jason Marris Kaipara District Council’s electoral officer

people to get them in early as it helps ensure any potential problems with the nomination forms can be resolved in plenty of time,” he said. Mr Ofsoske says in the NRC’s case, Northlanders will vote for nine councillors including one from Kaipara. Voting documents for the local body election will be posted out to electors from Friday, September 20 and must be received by noon on election day, Saturday, October 12. ¢

Road conditions ‘affect business’ u by Andy Bryenton

Mobile business owners and those who operate fleets to bring services to rural customers have expressed frustration with the condition of the region’s roads, citing a list of vehicle repairs they say are a direct result of road surface conditions. Electricians who have suffered gearbox mounts shorn through, ball joints destroyed and bushings replaced at far above the normal rate of frequency agree with plumbers who have experienced suspension and tyre repair bills, which more than one correspondent called ‘an additional tax’. Towing and transport operator Mike Ross was loaded with a multitonne agricultural tractor when he encountered a pothole on the Pouto road stretch known as Shine’s Hill. Mr Ross, who said he was travelling slowly with the heavy load, said he had in excess of $1,000 worth of damage to a truck wheel and narrowly

DRIVE SAFE On Rural Roads

avoided disaster. He says there were no warning signs or markers and when he approached authorities to advise them of the pothole, he was told to ‘drive to the conditions’. Another rural trades professional who asked not to be named cited certain local roads as ‘impassable’ by his vans and noted the necessity to continually replace heavy-duty tyres due to the use of oversized or sharp gravel. Across various trades, spoken to by Lifestyler, all agreed that the state of road maintenance should be a key factor in forthcoming local body elections and that road-related damage is an avoidable factor in pushing the cost of services up.

Chief Executive’s Memo As you are probably aware Local Government Elections are happening in 2019. October 12 is polling day, and while it may seem far away, a lot has to happen before then. Currently, nominations are open for elected members of the Kaipara District Council, Northland Regional Council and the Northland District Health Board. Our council is made up of eight councillors, two from each ward (Kaiwaka-Mangawhai, Otamatea, Central-West Coast, Dargaville), and a mayor elected at large (from across the district). Nominations for elected positions are open until midday on Friday August 16 2019. I encourage you to take some time to think about local representation. Local government is something you interact with every day. We manage local roads, parks, water, rubbish collection, libraries and so much more. Local government elected members bring to the council table a wide range of experience, action, plans and skills, and the more diverse the group, the better representation of our District. An elected member is a representative of their community, but should also work together to improve the lives of all those who call Kaipara home, or just pass through for a visit. If you’re interested in standing and want to know more about the direction of Kaipara, and the challenges and opportunities we’ll be facing in the next three years I encourage you to pick up a copy of our Pre-Election report from council offices, or online

at www.localelections.co.nz. If you’ve got questions about standing, feel free to contact Jason Marris at KDC on 09 439 1226 or the Freephone number 0800 922 822. If you’re not interested in standing, this is a great opportunity to think about who could represent your community, maybe you could reach out and have a chat to someone who needs that extra nudge to put their hand up. The Pre-Election Report still gives great background information on what skills we need at the council table to continue to make Kaipara thrive. Also, please make sure you’re enrolled to vote in the upcoming elections which you can do by visiting www.vote.nz, visiting a post shop or calling 0800 36 76 56. Louise Miller Chief Executive

Fresh gameplan for park’s future u by Andy Bryenton

A pathway toward better facilities and games of regional significance has been embarked upon by the Northern Wairoa Rugby Union, with significant developments planned for the newly-sponsored Pioneer Rugby Park in Dargaville.

Stage one has already been put into action, as detailed by funding and sponsorship coordinator Chris Fife, who is also Northern Wairoa delegate to the Northland Council of Union, a governance organization of the Northland Rugby Union. He has recently addressed Kaipara Mayor Jason Smith and councillors at a forum in Kaihu, outlining NW Rugby’s vision for the park and receiving enthusiastic support. This vision includes new grandstand, modern lighting, a digital scoreboard, funding for maintenance of the grounds to a high standard, and, through this and infrastructural improvement, the attraction of noteworthy games. Further meetings with Sport Northland and regional council sports facilities administrators have also taken place

to get this process underway to plan a strategic business plan. “Sportsville has achieved a hard court facility for netball and tennis, now it’s time to turn Memorial Park and Pioneer Park into a green grass multi-sport facility, moving forward with modern-day facilities we will all be proud of,” says Chris. Already, many local businesses have taken the opportunity to have signage placed around the sidelines of Pioneer Rugby Park, with more to come. Additionally, key games are already scheduled here for the near future. Northland’s under 19 representatives play Auckland A in Dargaville on August 24 in a free-to-watch public match. Northland Bs will take on Bay of Plenty on September 21, also free to view. ¢

Our future needs to include more forests Forestry is the key to getting New Zealand to carbon neutral. Though trees alone can’t achieve carbon neutrality for New Zealand permanently, our forests’ ability to absorb carbon is crucial for reaching 2030 and 2050 greenhouse gas reduction goals. That’s why there are incentives to plant trees, paid for by carbon emitters. That in turn is why so many New Zealand landowners are planting forests. Forests and farms are both crucial for New Zealand. Nearly a third of our log harvest is on farms. Let’s work together. We can continue to feed and house both us and our international customers, and fight climate change at the same time.

Emissions plan opinions sought

We didn’t sign up for this u by Matt King, Member of Parliament for Northland

It won’t come as any surprise to you that in the last election I didn’t vote for any constituent party or individual now in the current coalition government. In that regard, at least, I was in the majority.

There is only a small window of opportunity remaining for farmers and other affected citizens to make a submission on the Ministry for the Environment’s proposals for action on agricultural greenhouse gas emissions. With New Zealand a signatory to agreements aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the ministry has been working on proposals to tackle this controversial subject. In 2018, the government asked the Interim Climate Change Committee to focus on the question of agricultural emissions. Their results, as well as conversations with p Emissions proposals made by the Ministry for the those the ministry identified Environment are open for comment and debate by farmers, but only until August 13 as leaders in the agricultural sector, have formed the basis for some proposes ways forward, which are now agriculture sector, setting out a fiveopen for public submissions — only year programme of action to address until August 13. agricultural emissions. I could take some grim satisfaction in that, given how things have turned out. However, I don’t. I don’t think any of us, whether we voted for this government or not, can be happy or have any satisfaction, grim or otherwise, with the performance of this government since it took office. At the very least, we had a right to expect a level of competence. We didn’t get it. The appalling mishandling of the Kiwibuild fiasco, the outrageous and far from transparent mismanagement of the meningococcal outbreak here in the north, the increasing levels of unemployment and decreasing levels of business confidence all point to a government lacking basic management skills, let alone the vision and the skills necessary to take us forward. Given their failure to deliver anything substantive in their ‘Year of Delivery’, it is almost as if they didn’t expect to get in and were totally unprepared when they did.

Deeply worrying too is that they seem to display an implicit acceptance of their lack of competence and have defaulted to the minor parties to set policies. That is not a good look. Moreover, why do I bring that up now? Well, two reasons. First, I have just returned from my party’s national conference and what an energised conference it was. It was full of vigour, confidence and optimism. Much of that is organic, but some of it was also that we see a government in disarray, and we are rising to a groundswell wanting us to step in (and up) and do something about it. The second reason I bring it up now is that ground-swell. I feel it all around me — that disquiet about this government’s mishandling of almost everything it handles. Even many who voted for them are now having misgivings. The question being increasingly asked is: Is this what we signed up for? Nope. Not even close.

Homeshow is where the heart is u by Andy Bryenton

It’s grown into an event to rival the mighty National Fieldays at Mystery Creek, though it’s more about cosmopolitan comfort than agricultural excellence. The Auckland Home Show proudly acclaims itself the nation’s premier event for all those seeking renovation and building inspiration, and this year all the stops have been pulled out for a five-day extravaganza of decor, design, technology and fresh ideas. With a similar timespan to its mammoth rural counterpart, the Home Show fills the large ASB Showgrounds site to the brim with more than 500 exhibitors covering every aspect of home improvement, from floorings to ceilings, decorating to design, indoors and outdoors. Clever ideas in energy efficiency sit alongside innovations for modern kitchens and tools for perfectly manicured gardens, while every conceivable convenience to heat, cool, secure, entertain and connect your living space is here to view. The Home Show heralds the start of spring and the season of completing those projects around the home before the lazy days of summer. As such, inspiration is the key theme. As well as numerous displays showcasing new trends, emerging technologies and leaps forward in design, there will be an ongoing series of seminars hosted

by industry experts, in which Home Show patrons can hear about top tips, tricks and techniques from those at the forefront of their respective industries. To put it all in perspective, exhibitors have also constructed a full-scale area called The Street, packed with homes built just for the occasion. The Street is a walk-through feature of the latest innovations in landscaping materials, construction and lightweight or portable buildings. It features ready-built homes with fully landscaped sections, complete with gardens and water features. There’s so much to see during the five days from September 4, and we would like to invite you to attend. To help, we’re giving away THREE double passes with access to all the seminars, sights and secrets of the 2019 Auckland Home Show. Just find the five hidden ‘renovation themed’ icons concealed in our paper and what pages they’re on,

p this is an example of what to look for

then email through with the subject line Kaipara Lifestyler Home Show to comp@ integrity.nz. We will randomly pick THREE correct answers, which will each receive a double pass to the Auckland Home Show, on one day of their choosing. ¢

TO BUILD OR RENOVATE Progress for Paparoa development The luxury of living local and close to friends, family and familiar amenities is something we often take for granted. For rural people, stepping down from the helm of a farming enterprise and passing it over to the next generation can often mean moving away from a preferred pace and place of living. This factor was a primary concern when Paparoa’s Community Charitable Trust set out to create a residential and retirement lifestyle development in the small Kaipara town. The ability for retiring farmers to remain close to their legacy and their families informed some of the community-focussed thinking, which brought this scheme to fruition. Now well underway, enthusiastically greenlit by local authorities and with many sections already spoken for, the pathway to the breaking of the first shovelful of earth has been a smooth one. Twin Streams Wai Oranga Rua is taking shape just a short walk from the town’s iconic heritage-listed old bank building, and from day one this noncorporate development has planned for both residential homes and smaller, easy to maintain units, which come

with a requirement that one resident in each must be above the age of 60. New residents will own their home in their own right and have the freedom to build a residence to suit their needs with a minimum of restrictive covenants. Numerous studies show that living in a familiar and well-known place in one’s retirement years is healthier for both mind and body. That could be a factor of the lack of stress, and the lack of upheaval in life and routines of having to adapt to a new community in later life. Certainly, living in the rural environment and warmer climate of the North Kaipara seems a popular choice! ¢

THUMBS

The smart money on any upgrade to your home is on crunching the numbers, and in the case of photovoltaic solar, those numbers have been hotly debated. Here in New Zealand, the final verdict is that solar power is cost-effective, so long as 100 per cent of PV power is used on-site, and none is pumped back into the grid. That’s good news for those who want to sever ties with the wires and embrace rural views — like many of those building or renovating here in the Kaipara.

GARDENING & MAINTENANCE

GET IN BEFORE SPRING Let us tame that overgrowth and foliage. A professional, tidy result will have your garden looking great and ready for the new season. Now offering an eco-friendly chem wash for house and driveway.

Solar panels are proliferating across the country despite our government lagging behind other developed democracies in offering incentives and tax breaks for their implementation. At last count, the nation sported approximately 91 megawatts of solar power attached to homes and businesses, with 19Mw of that installed within the preceding year. The uptick has begun, and it’s being spurred on by large-scale projects such as the solar augmentation of Kaitaia College

this year, where 368 panels now adorn the roofline. Kaitaia maybe a little further north, but Kaipara with its wealth of sunshine hours to match Nelson and Marlborough is also a prime spot to ditch the grid and adopt solar energy solutions. Between PV outfits for the roof, solarpowered pumps to channel water to the tank, and the ability to mount solar panels to boats and campers, there are ample opportunities to turn the sun’s rays into real savings. Consider that a single panel averages at about $350 and that the turn-key

price for a full three to four-kilowatt system has dropped by two thirds in the past decade. Kaipara uptake rates for solar power systems are trending at 50 per cent higher than the North Island average and well above the national average, thanks to a combination of mild weather, ease of access to the technology, and the practicality of going off-grid in our many isolated rural and coastal communities. As battery and PV tech improves, it’s well worthwhile to talk to your local solar experts and plan for a future without monthly power bills. ¢

TO BUILD OR RENOVATE Entertainment beyond television u by Andy Bryenton

It’s been a while now since the glory days of the big, woodenboxed CRT television, dominating a corner of the living room with its fishbowl screen. Even the palatial three-telly set-up of Elvis in Graceland looks positively prehistoric, compared to the latest options on display. Part of this is because we are living in a post-television world. Ask most millennial kids when a particular programme is on air, and they will look at you like you have asked them to swap their iPhone for a rotary dial landline. Television is less and less something beamed into an aerial with shows at rigid time slots, and more a pick and mix of broadband-streamed content, selected whenever we like. That means the modern entertainment system is likely to centre around a smart TV, or even more likely a console or PC. The systems, which once only provided games now connect to Netflix, streaming conventional television channels and the internet, delivering services like YouTube. Most pack in a Blu-ray player as standard. A hefty hard drive connected directly to a big 4K capable screen means stored content can be watched as well. The key here is to select a machine

capable of very high-resolution output to match a very high-resolution screen. A crisp picture is only achieved with good data coming in as well as the ability to display it. Very large rooms may still benefit from a projector and screen, but with 65-inch flatscreens now the norm — it’s a matter of wall space! Then there’s the issue of sound. There are two ways to go here, and the modern soundbar is the easiest. Using clever speaker technology (some even have moving speakers inside the bar) these devices bounce audio from the walls and ceiling to create a surround effect. The smartest learn the contours of your room and react accordingly. The other option is more time-intensive but very immersive; run cables through the ceiling to a battery of surround speakers for the cinematic experience. Finally, get the right chairs. If you sat through Avengers: Endgame in a

cinema seat you’ll know the importance of comfort. Invest in some top recliners to make the home theatre a cut above the multiplex. Then you’re all set for this

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained. Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. *Results may vary

TO BUILD OR RENOVATE Bonza bonsai and topiary utopia With the home show season well and truly upon us, it’s time to venture into the darkest backyard wilderness and visit that ‘lost temple’ of gardening aspirations, the tool shed. If like many Kiwis, the thought of facing the automated relics inside fills you with religious dread, it might be time to take a closer look at how things are progressing in the world of outdoor power equipment. How many of us proceed to persevere with mowers our grandfathers would have called antique, chainsaws that deliver nothing with their stroppy pull-starts except forearms like Popeye the Sailor, and hedge trimmers, which seem positively homicidal? Then we are treated to the confection of finely tuned foliage, which is the latest masterwork of the landscaper’s art. Lawns like the surface of Bill Gates’ billiard table, topiary and clipped hedges that are the arboreal equivalent of those coiffured poodle-dogs led along Ponsonby Road on diamond-encrusted strings. Zen rockeries that would make the average kung fu master weep with pure spiritual harmony. The pumice used in these creations used to dream of this kind of treatment when it was still

10 miles under a volcano. How does anyone find the time or energy to make their back yard (the place where kids, dogs, and incontinent elderly cats roam free) look this darn good? The answer is that a good workman always praises his tools. The new crop really is better. Lighter, often silent and battery-operated, and sharper for longer. From ride-on lawnmowers so stable they literally come with cup holders to electric chainsaws, which slice branches like butter. There’s a serious message in the ranks of oiled and gleaming outdoor power machines on display at the home show. The old way is laborious, tiresome and sometimes just unsafe. Do yourself a favour. Ditch the scrap iron with cutting edges like uncooked bacon, and talk to your local mower, chainsaw and small engine specialist. Keeping a rust museum is false economy because your time is precious and your garden could be too. ¢

Pick the right renovation There’s a fine line between a handyperson’s dream and a renovation nightmare if you’re committed to doing it yourself. It’s all about picking a home with the proverbial ‘good bones’, and knowing exactly what lies beneath before you make a budget. Here’s a list the experts use. 1. Check out the roof first. A complete re-roof may be necessary on older homes which have been neglected. It’s hard to scope out the top of the house at an open home, but a careful look is best practice, including popping up through the ‘manhole’ into the ceiling cavity to check for damp. A top tip - spiders hate the dry conditions in a well sealed roof. Lots of webs and a clammy feeling may mean a leak. 2. What lies beneath. Just as important as the top end is the bottom end. Is water collecting under the house? How are the pilings? A re-pile is a major task, so make sure the foundations are solid, especially in old villas and bungalows. It’s also possible to check the state of plumbing and insulation while underneath. There have been cases of showers draining to nowhere and pipes held up by plastic tape only discovered by a trip under the deck. 3. Joinery bears the brunt of storms,

heat and rain, so check windowsills, window frames and doors for rotten timber, a snug fit and draughts. Sticking or leaning doors and windows might tell you that the whole wall is out of true in the worst case. Of course, it is possible to switch out old framing for modern aluminium, but a leaky window may well have damaged the wall below. 4. Take a very thorough look at the two big impact area which raise or lower the value of a home; kitchens and bathrooms. Can a quick paint job

resurrect the area, or will it need to be gutted? Are appliances installed correctly and safely? As both of these areas are filled with steam, water and moisture, has the flooring protected the wood underneath over the years? By taking a good look at these factors, and having paperwork from all required tradies for previous renovations or installs, you can be sure that you have picked a blank canvas worthy of your DIY attention that will make money in the future and be warm and comfortable to live in. ¢

Let’s keep him riding

Pay attention!

around road works

u by Andy Bryenton

Doctors told Steve Reid he would never ride a motorcycle again; confined to a wheelchair after a bike accident left him paralysed and without the use of his legs — the West Auckland father was devastated. However, he got back on the road with the support of some generous and crafty mates — now there’s a new challenge to overcome. Steve said that the accident ‘seemed like the end of his life’, but he wasn’t giving up. He did his own research into how he could modify a motorcycle to be operated with hand controls only, then got some professional assistance from Henderson’s West Engineering to make the necessary modifications, including a flat ‘sidecar’ to carry his wheelchair. After a month of painstaking work, they had transformed a Harley Davidson Sportster into a new lease of life. “It’s unbelievable; it’s probably the best feeling I’ve had in the last two years,” Steve said at the time. “Don’t give up on your dreams, I did once when the doctors told me I couldn’t walk again, let alone ride — but I was determined. I had a great support network, and I’ve achieved things with my body I never thought was possible.” Then came a tough decision. Steve’s son Layne had the opportunity to progress in this dream of being a motorcycle stunt and performance rider.

Steve did what any dad would do and gifted him his bike. However, the story only starts there. When his mates at the Auckland Chopper Club (custombuilt motorbike enthusiasts and riders) heard of his sacrifice, they determined to ensure that both father and son could enjoy freedom on two wheels. On August 18 they are organising a huge Ride for Steve event, raising money to install his wheelchair sidecar on a new machine. It has become huge, with

While not essential, a background or interest in English or Mathematics would be an advantage. The Learning Centre is the main learning hub for our students. It is the space where opportunities for ‘the study’ portion of the self-directed-learning process takes place on a campus. The Centre is equipped with a range of Learning Zones, resources and seating options to facilitate student needs. Applications from overseas teachers with New Zealand teacher registration are welcome. CONTACT Iain Longden on 021 514 743 or iain.longden@nz.oneschoolglobal.com
