Gold award for farmers Matt King interview u by Anna Harding

u by Joanna Manson

Pouto beef farmers Chris and Karren Biddles have won a gold medal at the Steak of Origin competition in the Best of Brand — Wholesale and Food Service section.

Northland candidate for National, Matt King will feature in a Kaipara Lifestyler TV video interview which will be available online next week.

3

p Northland candidate for National Matt King p Karren and Chris Biddles with some of their previous steak awards

Beef and Lamb New Zealand’s annual “celebration of all things beef” was held at The Cloud on Auckland’s waterfront, which the Biddles attended. “It was exciting and satisfying to win,” said Chris. “We have previously won the Grand Champion in 2007 and again in 2013. In 2012 we won the producer of the decade. We have had a further nine finalist entries over the 15 years the competition has been run, plus eight

finalist entries in the brand part of the competition. “When we first won, I just said it was luck. But because we’ve been so successful for so long, without a doubt it is the type of cattle we breed.” Te Atarangi Angus is the breed and Chris says that it’s a quick maturing animal, it’s moderate in size and calves easily. “The majority of the winners have been breeding similar cattle over the years,” he adds. ¢

The candidate hopeful called into Lifestyler House recently to discuss the upcoming election and what drove him to stand for parliament. Matt said coming from a farming background he’s a hard worker. “Most farmers are hard workers. We’re practical, pragmatic, number eight wire — give everything a go. In my view when you live in a rural community you can be affected more by the economy, transportation and digital connectivity.” Mr King said says he sees his

background as being an advantage to representing the Northland region. “I have a deep seated and very committed connection with Northland, have lived here most of my life, and I feel Northland is really lacking in representation at the moment. I think I have something to contribute to this region and I’m really passionate about it.” Check our YouTube channel next week to watch the interview www. youtube.com/nsmmkltv. ¢

p Young people at the last Northland Youth Summit

The summit, organised by Creative Northland, aims for youth to develop the confidence to speak up about the issues that matter to them and their communities. The workshops cover digital film/video, music, paint and mural, performance and theatre, and 3D projection mapping. Participants will be in the Dargaville town hall during the day and stay overnight at the Oturei Marae with travel and food included. To apply you must be between the ages of 12-24 and from the Northland region. There are 60 spaces, with 10-12 people in each workshop. Students go for gold u by Anna Harding

The big latch on

Eleven young men and women from Otamatea High School were recently invited to King’s College, Auckland to receive their Gold Duke Of Edinburgh’s International Award from the GovernorGeneral Dame Patsy Reddy.

p Rebecca Blatherwick with her 13-month-old and Toni Christiansen with nine-month-old attend the ‘big latch on’ in celebration of World Breastfeeding Week. Te Ha Oranga organised ‘the event to celebrate local Kaipara mums with a morning tea and goody bags thanks to the Warehouse and Dargaville pharmacy. The morning also doubled as a formal introduction to new Tamariki Ora ‘well child nurse’ Evelyn Suhren p From the left is Robyn Bruce, Kalani Wehi, Wayne Maclennan, Ayla Wehi, Ruby-Rose Hallamore, Erin Mooney, Jesper Smyth, Samantha Allen, Connor Small, Deputy Principal Dirk Smyth, Jessica Linton and Tashae Paikea

“It was with immense pleasure that Mr Wayne Maclennan, Mr Dirk Smyth and myself were able to attend this prestigious ceremony where ex students, Ayla Wehi, Tashae Paikea, Ruby-Rose Hallamore, Erin Mooney, Jessica Linton, Jesper Smyth, Connor Small and Kalani Wehi along with current head girl, Samantha Allen were presented their gold award,” said the school’s award leader Robyn Bruce. Two students, Joshua Royds and Rita Hames were overseas and will receive their awards when they return. The gold award is the culmination of a four

to five year journey from bronze as a 14-year-old. “There is a great feeling of satisfaction that all the hard work and time spent completing each section has paid off.” said Robyn. This year was a record for the school, in the number of young people receiving the gold award at once. It was also the first time a current student, Samantha Allen, has received an award while still at school and the first time more than one family member has received the award at the same ceremony — Ayla and Kalani Wehi. ¢

Testing warfare skills

‘Here and there’ exhibition

u by Joanna Manson

u by Joanna Manson

A young Mangawhai woman and former Otamatea High School student is embarking on her dream job, practising anti-submarine warfare tactics in Micronesia.

A new art exhibition by renowned artist Adrienne Dietrich and husband David Foley which explores themes of travel will be showcasing at the Muddy Waters Art gallery in Dargaville from August 12 until September 9.

Corporal Portia Havill, 24, is an air warfare specialist with the Royal New Zealand Air Force and is part of a detachment taking part in the two-week Guam-based training exercise. The exercise uses a surveillance aircraft and support team and will practise anti-submarine warfare skills alongside forces from the United States and the Japanese Self-Defence Force. Corporal Havill said it was challenges like these that drew her to the RNZAF. “I knew that I did not want to just go to university like everyone else,” she said. Having seen advertisements on television, she started researching

career options before she narrowed down the airforce as the defence career experience after being, as she put it, “that kid who asks all the annoying questions.” Fuelled by the promise of job variety, her first big exercise was Pacific Rim, the world’s biggest maritime exercise in 2016. Attending the exercise and working alongside 26 nations, 45 ships, five submarines, more than 200 aircraft and 25,000 personnel off the Hawaiian Islands confirmed to her that she had made the right career choice. “I’d recommend it to everyone. The job has proved to be everything I was looking for.” ¢

The joint exhibition will include up to 30 different paintings by the couple who have enjoyed creating art from many of the places they visited in their travels around New Zealand and abroad. Watercolours, pen and wash, gouache and acrylics are some of the media used. “My favourite painting is of Kauri Mountain beach at Whangarei Heads and David’s favourite is called ‘Fearless — high and dry’ — an old tug boat which he drew in Port Adelaide Australia,” said Adrienne. A number of paintings that will be shown feature the United Kingdom, Australia and local spots around Whangarei Heads. She says although the pair both enjoy using water colours her favourite medium at the moment is “painting with gouache on black backgrounds.” The exhibition will run for a month and during that time David will be conducting a basic drawing workshop on August 26 and Adrienne will also be hosting a ‘fun with charcoal’ course on September 2. The exhibition opening from 12-1pm on August 12. ¢

Celebrations began with Dale Schick, the chair of the hospice board followed by Kaipara Mayor Greg Gent who acknowledged the “wonderful service” provided by volunteers, staff and the community. Linda Newson of Te Kopuru, whose husband Alan was looked after by Hospice before he died last year, spoke highly of the service she and her family received. “Alan had a lengthy illness. Hospice was with us for the last eight months. As a family we wanted Alan to die at home. Hospice were just amazing, I just can’t speak highly enough of them.” In 1990 Dargaville district nurse Mary Munn

recognised the need for a support group for people living with a terminal illness. Two years later social worker Marlene Calder and volunteer Jean Finlayson became the founding members Kaipara Palliative Care before it became Hospice Kaipara in 2007. “The average number of patients looked after by Kaipara Hospice at any one time is 25,” said Annette Olsen, lead clinical nurse. The support Kaipara Hospice receives from the community means they have been able to purchase equipment and supplies and continue providing the valuable service to the Kaipara community. ¢

RIVERVIEW REST HOME AND VILLAGE

u by Anna Harding

As a New Zealand Society of Genealogists 50th anniversary celebration, the Northern Wairoa Genealogy Society Inc has invited author Tui Stonell to Dargaville, to speak on the research behind her Kaipara-based books. Tui writes under the name ‘Kate Stirling’ and lives in Taranaki. “I was born in Whangarei and my grandfather was working on the Kauri forest fields in Kaipara. He told us all these stories about the place and that made me interested in the area.” The books, Yates Landing, Thunder Children and Shark Harbour make up a trilogy. Yates landing follows a young woman’s arrival from Britain to New Zealand at the turn of the 20th century. Thunder Children follows Jessica Jackson, an only child who lost her mother at an early age. Shark Harbour is the story of a hermit Will Cray who’s life is changed when Eve Langley arrives on the scene. “It started out to be about different families but the first book is about a woman whose granddaughter is in the second book and her child is in the third book. It’s like stepping up through the generations covering about 100 years,” said Tui. The books are historically and geographically correct, but the characters are fictional. She has also

written five other novels, based in other New Zealand locations she has connections with. “The districts I write about, I know about.” Tui said she’s looking forward to coming back. “I like Dargaville and I like the north. Talking to the people in Dargaville will be lovely. Her Kaipara Trilogy is available at the Dargaville Library and at online stores. The event is on Tuesday, August 15, from 12-3pm, at Northern Wairoa Boating Club, Totara St, Dargaville. Tickets are $10, with lunch included. In carrying on the theme of Kaipara pioneer history, the 155 year anniversary of the Albertland Settlers sailing into port is coming up this month. It is significant because Albertland was New Zealand’s last planned settlement. The Wellsford, Port Albert, Maungaturoto, Paparoa and Matakohe areas, were all established by these pioneers. ¢

Preserved in time The Albertland Heritage Centre in Wellsford tells a story of local history with its collections of extensive records, memorabilia, artifacts, and other items relating to Albertland from the 1860s. Since 1862 the Kaipara area has been home to the Albertlander settlements originally based in Port Albert and then spreading to surrounding areas such as Matakohe, Paparoa and beyond. Expecting to find pasture land and townships, the early pioneers were disheartened to find their land to be in heavy kauri bush in the back of beyond says curator manager, Peter Marsh. However many of the early settlers persevered and developed their holdings into the farmland we see today and their stories make for interesting reading. The Albertland Heritage

Centre in Wellsford holds irreplaceable collections of artefacts, memorabilia, family heirlooms and hand written stories in letters and manuscripts. A priceless source of information for researchers. Peter says the centre’s point of difference is the photographic collections dating back to the 1890s. From his home in Wharehine, Harold Marsh travelled the Kaipara extensively until the 1930s, always taking his camera with him to amass a collection of over 7,500 glass plate negatives. The negatives have now all

been digitised and many can be viewed online at albertland.co.nz and prints can be ordered from the website. A selected collection is contained in the book Images of Albertland, on sale at the centre. From the 1950s, other photographic collections include those of Don Worsnop, Cliff Grant, Coast to Coast Newspaper, as well as many family collections. Presently over 40,000 on these images have been scanned. The centre

also houses ship passenger lists, crown grant records, school enrolments, applications to marry, and individual family records are available to peruse. The Albertland Settlement was unique and has been extensively documented from letters written to the agents promoting the scheme, on board ships diaries, letters sent backwards and forwards to/from England, to published books and DVDs. The water industry — in terms of raw supply alone — tops a trillion dollars annually. And that’s without taking into consideration the single most important use of fresh water worldwide — feeding the planet. Farming uses a vast amount of water, but thankfully here in New Zealand we enjoy a water-rich environment, compared to places such as the Middle East or North Africa. Much of the water which falls on NZ as rain reaches the sea rather than the pasture, prompting Federated Farmers’ Conor English to say in 2011 — ‘It’s not that New Zealand is running out of water, it’s that water is running out of New Zealand’. Capturing and using water wisely, then, is the way forward. And other countries with water issues more severe than ours point to an information-based approach. Farmers in the United States West and Southwest are all too aware of water shortages currently, leading to the rise of advanced

integrated information systems which can pinpoint exactly where water needs to be directed. In cropping and orchard applications this means implanting a wirelessly networked series of probes into the soil, with each of them reporting back to a central computer. A map of the land can then be built up with a detailed hydrographic analysis overlaid — showing which areas need irrigation, and at what concentration. Taking things another step, even water reticulation and delivery systems can be placed entirely under computer control, with just the right amount delivered when it’s needed, at the right time of the day to prevent loss through evaporation.

On a macro level, similar principles are being applied to irrigation-reliant areas worldwide, with feedback direct from the crop advising the best use and coverage of water from large-scale irrigation systems. Such systems can even pinpoint leaks well before a human operator and can work in with the weather itself, taking rain, ambient humidity and dewfall into account when calculating a ‘water budget’ for top yield. Many cutting-edge farming companies in New Zealand already offer hardware and software for water monitoring applications, so the competitive edge these systems offer is already being recognised in the field. ¢

Winter takes its toll on all kinds of vehicles, but none more than those used in New Zealand’s rural heartland. Thick mud, loose gravel, uneven surfaces and heavy rain all combine to give our farming fleet a hammering in the middle of the year, and this is exacerbated for those farmers engaged in the business of calving.

Call Tim 021 766 129 or Call Gavin 021 766 130 or Call Glen 021 766 136 It’s not just tractors and quad bikes that suffer from a ‘perfect storm’ of adverse weather and little time for maintenance. Those machines which serve double duty cop the most punishment — farm utes, which fulfil a real workhorse role at this time of year. Not only are some of these hardworking machines pressed into service on the farm, they also have to deal with hinterland roads in need of some maintenance themselves. Add heavy loads over ‘washboarded’ gravel, cold starts and lashings of mud, and it’s apparent that a Kiwi farmer’s ute operates at the edge of what many manufacturers would deem possible. That means it’s prudent to give your rural vehicle — whether it’s just such a working machine or even a daily driver

that’s been subjected to winter roads, potholes and rain — a check up at this mid-point of the season. The message from auto electricians, mechanics and the authorities is clear; your WOF sticker isn’t magic. With many warrants of fitness now spanning a 12-month period, there’s no telling what damage has occurred since the last time a vehicle was checked. Considering the double blow of harsh weather and primitive metalled roads here in the north, a quick check could save plenty of trouble down the track. After all, that strange noise or loose steering today could develop into something much worse tomorrow — at the worst possible time. Batteries and electrical systems are also known to suffer from the

The ULTIMATE fencing tool  Using Batten King takes less than one minute per batten or just a few seconds using a staple gun. It is a one man operation saving time and halving labour.  The batten is held in place by one wire allowing staples to be applied to the other wires in a nice even manner.  It works as a dolly whilst stapling providing a firm, stable surface to hit against while hammering or using a staple gun.  Batten King is a safer way to fence because it eliminates the need to physically hold the batten in place while stapling. This eliminates the risk of injury via jarring or accidentally hitting hands with a hammer.
