 The ‘Make it and Bake it’ group from Dargaville High School presented two local rest homes with Christmas cakes that they made as their way to give back to the community. The students fundraised for the ingredients by selling baked goods and managed to raise enough money to bake the cakes and came away with a profit which they plan to donate to charity. “The rest home people were so excited and they were all smiling and happy. It was very touching and definitely worth the effort. It was nice to be able to contribute to the community in such a positive way,” said student Kelly Amoore.

New principal for Dargaville High

 by Ayla Miller

 by Ayla Miller

Dargaville High School is set to see a new principal take the reins in 2017 as they welcome former Queen Elizabeth College principal Michael Houghton. Mr Houghton has been in education for 24 years and has been a principal for eight of those years. He began his career at Wairoa College and spent some time in Maungaturoto at Otamatea High School as Head of Social Studies. He then went on to work at Marlborough Girls College as head of faculty for Social Studies before moving on to Tolaga Bay as deputy principal. When the role of principal came up at Queen Elizabeth College the family moved to Palmerston North. “When I became a principal I reassessed what I wanted to  Michael Houghton, new Dargaville High School principal do next, and one of the things I always wanted to aspire to was to work “The links with the community are at a larger school amongst a smaller really important and in some respect community, which Dargaville High I’ll bring a fresh set of eyes. The wooden feature was made possible with funds raised by the recent charity auction of a home built by MyPad, and is estimated to be worth $35,000. MAZ chairperson Colin Gallagher says the committee wanted to include a wooden feature in the playground area to accompany the plastic playground, and it made sense to have something with a nautical theme given Mangawhai’s proximity to the beach. The pirate ship was installed earlier this week and includes climbing ropes and a slide, and will fly a locally designed flag from its mast. Mr Gallagher says a number of other projects will be complete for the summer months. “We now have an all-weather cricket pitch on the lower oval, made by Tiger

Turf, and it will be ready for use in about a week’s time. “Next to that we have had a junior soccer field marked out by Recreational Services of Whangarei. Goals and nets will be added next week so we are all ready to go for the holidays. Our CCTV is up and running covering the skate park, and two more cameras will be added when we raise more funds.” A grant from Foundation North has allowed for immediate work to begin on the Pump Tracks for BMX and Mountain Biking. The main car park will also be extended to handle the influx of people in summer. MAZ will hold a working bee on Sunday, December 18 with a 9am start and everyone is welcome. Making the season jolly New National

candidate steps up  by Ayla Miller

A new face is set to enter the race for the Northland seat in the 2017 general election following the selection of Matt King as National party Northland candidate.

Christmas is nearly here, and all our local stores are filled with decorations, tempting gift ideas and the sound of carols. But for one lucky Kaipara Lifestyler reader Christmas has come slightly earlier than expected. This year’s winner of our big ‘Shop Local and Win’ prize draw is Jessica Rope, who brought some help along to claim her prize. Considering her ticket was filled in at the Dargaville Pizza and Indian Restaurant, the whole family may have to pitch in to help spend that $500 windfall — it

will come in the form of a feast of hot pizza and traditional Indian cuisine! During our contest this year, more entries than ever before were poured into our prize draw box, with the good folks at the local police station officiating to keep it all fair. That means more of a boost for local retailers, tradespeople and restaurants — to name but a few — in this busy season leading up to the summer break. Congratulations once again to our luck winner, and we’ll be back soon with more great prizes and giveaways!

Dargaville Business Forum chair Peter Boyd says the long awaited Puhoi to Wellsford Road development will be a huge benefit for Kaipara, after work was formally opened by Prime Minister John Key and Transport Minister Simon Bridges last week.

The staff and management of The Three Furlongs Bar and Grill in Kaiwaka are holding a Christmas fundraising event with all proceeds going to the Kaiwaka Food Bank.

The $709.5 million state highway development is due to be open to traffic in late 2021. “It will especially benefit those businesses that export and import product from the area as the road will create a more convenient freight connection to Auckland, Northland, Tauranga and beyond,” said Mr Boyd. “We also have a number of  Transport Minister Simon Bridges and Prime Minister John Key turn the soil with Tracy Davis, from Ngati residents that commute from Whatua Kaipara the Kaipara to Auckland and these roading improvements will make Northern motorway will enhance travel a lot easier for them. inter-regional and national economic “By improving the roads North of growth and improve the reliability of the Auckland we will obviously receive transport network between Auckland benefits from that and it will open up and Northland. opportunities for business development “The NZ Transport Agency has been and provide people with better undertaking investigations and will be lifestyle opportunities.” sharing an indicative route with the The project is being delivered public early next year,” says Mr Bridges. through a Public Private Partnership, “Both of these projects will reduce the second for a state highway in New the overall travel time between Zealand. More Skilled Staff Make Hospital Stay Safer Dargaville Hospital is becoming increasingly equipped to handle high acuity patients thanks to new training for the hospital’s staff. Clinical leader Dr Scott Wilson joined Dargaville Hospital at the start of 2016, bringing expertise in rural medicine from Ashburton Hospital. Now the aim is for upskilled staff to be able to handle higher acuity cases so fewer patients need to be referred to Whangarei Hospital. “If we can deliver the standards of care that they can in Kaitaia and Bay of Islands hospitals, why can’t we do this here?” Dr Wilson said. “We are slowly extending our capabilities and starting to keep [within the hospital] quite complex cardiac and respiratory cases which in the past would have been transferred to other hospitals. “I’m trying to reach for equality. I want someone who walks through the door at Dargaville to expect the same standard of care as they would at Kaitaia or Bay of Islands Hospitals.” “Our clinical nurse manager has helped facilitate training such as resuscitation scenario drills and has helped organise further education” “Also, we want the manufacturer of technology which we bring into play to follow their obligation to ensure we’re trained in how to use that technology and

I am able to teach Advanced Paediatric Life Support.” “I know there has been anxiety in the community [about the hospital closing overnight] but we’re not going backward: we’re pushing forward,” Dr Wilson said. Eighteen-year-old Kyran Gillespie has become the first Baylys Beach surf lifeguard to get his inflatable rescue boat qualification following an intense exam in 2.5 metre swells at Ahipara.

 Kyran Gillespie — back row, fifth from left — and fellow surf lifesavers gather outside the Far North Surf Club for their Inflatable Rescue Boat exam at Ahipara

There are six qualified lifeguards who make up the Baylys Beach team and they are currently working under Ruakaka Surf Club. There is no official club at Baylys Beach however they are working towards having their own patrol based at the proposed community centre. “We want to get as many lifeguards as we can,” says Kyran. “We have an open swim night every Tuesday at the Kauri Coast Community Pool and anyone can come along at 5pm and have a go.” Kyran has been involved with surf life saving for three years and has patrolled Whangarei Heads, Ruakaka and Baylys Beach. “It’s really enjoyable and you are helping the community,” he says. “We have the longest driveable beach in New Zealand and we don’t have our own club. In the future we want to work

with other emergency services and make the beach safe for everyone.” Life member of Ruakaka surf club, senior lifeguard and recent Dargaville resident Ben McKernan says Ruakaka club are assisting in getting the Baylys Beach team ready to have their own club. “We are trying to get the Baylys Beach volunteers more qualifications so that they can sustain their own patrol. “Other than the lakes, Baylys is the next closest place people can swim. If we can establish a safe swimming area there will be a lot more public heading out that way to swim and enjoy the water. “The water is a safe environment providing you are aware of the conditions and rips, and by us having those flags we can create that and more of a family atmosphere whilst at the same time providing information and education to the public about the dangers.” 

Northland Inc general manager for Business Growth Joseph Stuart and CEO David Wilson outlined their role and explained how Dargaville can tap into this resource of people and expertise to assist in encouraging business, innovation and growth. “It is not our job to lead the changes — it is up to the community. It is our job to provide the support and tools to make things happen,” Mr Stuart said. “This event is a great example of the serendipity that can happen when different groups come together.” Mayor Greg Gent said he saw Dargaville as the hub of the Kaipara with a great deal of potential. “We need to work together to decide what sort of experience people want to have when they come here.”

Dargaville Community Development Board chairperson Allan Mortensen said it is up to the community to take initiative. “We think Dargaville has an amazing future but it is up to us to make it happen and stop waiting for central and local government to do things. “If we get off our backsides and start making things happen ourselves we might be surprised about the amount of help we will get from those organisations.” The DCDB Will continue to work on various projects in 2017 such as getting a community website set up, and are waiting for final approval for a feasibility study regarding the development of a retirement village at the request of Kaipara Grey Power. 

Preparing for tournament  by Ann Morgan

The Tomarata Tag Module are currently fundraising to send the Northland team to the National Tag tournament in Auckland next February.

Taiaha travels Northland  by Ann Morgan

The students of Tangowahine Primary School spent time with All Black great Bruce Robertson and the taiaha Te Hiku, commissioned by New Zealand Rugby to go to the winner of the British and Irish Lions versus the New Zealand Provincial Barbarians match next year.

 The Tomarata module are fundraising to send the Northland team to the National Tag tournament early next year

There will be three Northland teams attending the tournament — an Open Men’s, Open Women’s and Senior Mixed, with players coming from Mangawhai, Tomarata, Wellsford, Kaiwaka and Maungaturoto. “Tomarata is the only Tag Module being played in Northland and it is exciting to be entering three squads into the event. We would really appreciate businesses supporting us in any way they can to help make this happen,” said coordinator Shayne Smith. Tag is a non contact option for rugby and the team have people from 15 years old to those in their 50s playing. “Tag has only been in Northland for four years and although we are a small club we are very competitive and our teams are aiming to make a massive impact at the tournament. It is a great, fun and competitive sport in a social atmosphere,” said Shayne. The Northland team has competed in the national tournament the previous four years and have enjoyed the experience. This year various coaches have offered their time and experience to help

the team prepare for the event. “It is a very exciting opportunity and a great way to bring our small communities from across the Kaipara together as one, and compete in Auckland in a unified team environment.” “To send the teams to the nationals, we are fundraising in different ways to be able to offer goods and services donated by local businesses as prizes for a major raffle, and we would appreciate any support from the community and businesses.” Shayne urges the community to support the local players and help them to meet their registration and payment deadline at the beginning of February. “We are looking forward to representing the Kaipara and encourage members of the community to come and watch our players train or play in the tournament. We also encourage others to create a team to join them to play games at the Tomarata club — these can be family groups, friends or businesses.” For more information please contact Shayne on 027 454 7006 or tomaratatag@yahoo.co.nz. 

 Tangowahine students with the taiaha Te Hiku

Caretaker of the Te Hiku, Paul Hope, from Northland Rugby Union has been sharing the story of the taiaha with students across Northland with Mr Robertson. “It was wonderful to be able to visit Tangowahine school and to be helped out by Bruce, a 102 All Blacks match veteran. He was keen to show the pupils his skills and interact with them,” said Mr Hope. “The students were awesome and there were lots of great questions directed at Bruce such as what was it like being an All Black in that era.” Mr Hope said the match at Whangarei’s Toll Stadium will be the first of the British and Irish Lions tour and more than 20,000 visitors

are expected across Northland during the tournament. Tangowahine School principal Wayne Steele said the visit was a great opportunity for the students. “They thought it was pretty special and they enjoyed talking to Bruce. It was a really good experience and they were impressed with the information they learnt and we were able to show them where the Lions team are travelling from.” Te Hiku will be on display at Whangarei Central Library from December 19 to February 27 and at Whangarei Art Museum from February 27 until May 27. The first game will be played at Toll Stadium Whangarei on Saturday June 3.

HARBOURMASTER DIRECTION – KAI IWI LAKES ACCESS LANES Te Kaunihera A Rohe O Te Taitokerau

This direction will cease when the Kai Iwi Lake bylaw comes into force sometime in 2017, or may be cancelled by the harbourmaster at any time. In the meantime safety concerns have been raised over the lack of any access lanes (otherwise known as Ski Lanes). The harbourmaster has determined that for the purposes of ensuring navigational safety, access lanes would improve safety on the lakes.
