by Joanne Speechly With the nearest animal shelter for Kaipara at the SPCA in Whangarei, a group of Dargaville people have opened a refuge a little closer to home. The group of volunteers is led by Marni Berghan, who operated the animal shelter, dubbed Kaipara Paws and Claws, from her home, before she and her supporters obtained the lease of the old vet clinic on Murdoch Street. The clinic has facilities to cater for cats, kittens and other small animals but cannot accept dogs or puppies at this stage. “We can take guinea pigs, chickens, rabbits — that sort of thing — because they’re easily re-homed. Unfortunately, we cannot take dogs at this stage because they pose too much of a problem for where we’ll be and I feel that they come under the council’s authority,” says Marni, who has been supported in the project by Pono Lodge as well as family and friends. “We’ve had a few ups and downs but this is the new home that will help out animals in the Kaipara. So far, we have reached the target of raising $5,000 but despite this, we are still in need of donations, sponsorship and volunteers. “It will be great to have this service available in town, it is well needed and it has been a long, long time coming and I really hope all Kaipara residents will get behind it and help in some way. We’re doing this to help tidy the whole community up. “Our overruling message is for people to get their pets de-sexed. Vet checks and de-sexing will be performed at Dargaville veterinary clinic and all animals put up for adoption will leave the clinic with a clean bill of health.” The shelter opening is timely with Christmas and holidays just around the corner, a time when animal shelters are busiest. “In the near future, we’ll also be setting up a cattery for when people are away on holiday,” said Marni. “Our fundraising initiatives will include a small second hand shop at the shelter and people are more than welcome to come in and purchase goods — or donate money or goods. This is a series of regular articles keeping you informed of happenings on our harbour today, and from bygone days — truly the ‘Jewel of the Kaipara’.

A summer on the water by Paul Campbell

Heading to sea in a bathtub — at the Pahi Regatta

So summer has officially arrived, and with the school holidays looming along with the festive season, eyes are turning to the outdoors — more specifically the coastal playground we are much blessed by. And the Kaipara is a focal point for summer fun. In fact it has already started, with the King of the Kaipara fishing contest setting the scene for more activity to come. Tinopai has its annual fishing fest scheduled for January 14 when the holiday crowds swell the population to something resembling a small city, with the contest raising funds for Tinopai School. Later in the holiday month, Anniversary Weekend heralds the Pahi Regatta which has been a summer draw card on the Northern Kaipara since 1886. With its magnificent camping ground at the water’s edge, Pahi undergoes a weekend holiday explosion with tourists and locals gathering in droves for two days of fun, sport, competition and food and refreshments with a stated emphasis on safety and family enjoyment. The usual marquee will host the Miss Pahi beauty contest and the traditional evening gatherings for live music. A highlight of the regatta is the $1,000 bath-tub race. The competition draws a dozen or so hardy entrants from around the harbour and further

afield, who must complete a designated threeleg course in a bathtub powered by a twohorsepower outboard. As in past years, there will be the fast and the slow, although it seems each year there is a step up in design and technology to provide plenty of entertainment. A great way to enjoy the regatta but without having to compete for space is to find a spot over at Whakapirau on the other side of the inlet at Pahi and spread the picnic blanket there.

above Tinopai, eliminating a communications blackspot that’s been a problem in the past. And our coastguard volunteers will be gearing up for more volunteer hours on the water or on radio watch. Across the country, they put in an awesome total of 348,346 hours on the water last year, to ensure boaties were kept safe at sea.

Of course, from moorings and launching spots around the huge Kaipara harbour, boats large and small will be out after snapper, kahawai, gurnard et all — not to mention a scoop of scallops.

“While it’s easy for boaties to get excited about heading to their favourite holiday spots at this time of year, it’s imperative skippers remember that keeping passengers safe starts before you even get to the boat ramp with good preparation and safety checks,” says Coastguard New Zealand CEO, Bruce Reid.

This summer they will be able to better keep in touch with each other and safety services, thanks to the installation by the North Kaipara Volunteer Coastguard of a repeater transmitter

To keep the message simple Coastguard has prepared The Boating Safety Code in a handy credit card size. It’s available at www.adventuresmart.co.nz.

Merry Christmas And A Tropical Summer

Christmas is less than two weeks away! Gosh how this year has flown, and look how much a little country like ours has packed into the year! I’d love to wish you and your family a happy and safe Christmas season, and look forward to catching up with you again next year. Take some time to relax, and try to avoid the stresses of the holidays! As always Palmers carries a great range of quality giftware, gift baskets, and gift ideas for you to consider. But this year we are really buzzing about the quality of our plant offer. Our Calla Lilies are HOT! The Zantedeschia Hot Shot has a highly decorative flame coloured leaf. They always deliver elegant colour for the garden or container. Tolerant of partial shade and most soil types, Callas are easy care plants that impress every year. Christmas Lilies are blooming! They are tall, fragrant, and while they make a great container plant in this size, I have successfully grown them in the garden for years. They are very easy plants. Poinsettias are a Christmas standard. This year we have three grades for you to choose from. A smaller grade as a result of our supplier losing some growing sheds in the February Christchurch earthquake! We have finally received a fantastic selection of tropical Hibiscus. I say “finally” because folks have been asking for these for weeks! Fijian Hibiscus have smaller flowers and are hardier and easier to grow. Hawaiian Hibiscus have larger, showier, exotic looking flowers that are often frilled. Many of our Hawaiian types are grafted to improve vigour and hardiness. Clark’s Hybrids are a cross between a Fijian and Hawaiian Hibiscus. A small evergreen shrub, these beauties add a real tropical summer look to any garden. I’ve left the best ‘til last! For those of you with limited space, or for those looking for an exceptional frangipani that will ALWAYS be within smelling reach, come in and see our new range of miniature Jungle Jack's plumeria. You won’t believe how gorgeous this miniature plumeria is. These will grow to just over a metre, but can grow dozens of tips. A profuse bloomer, they will remind you of that tropical paradise holiday you enjoyed so much. The last great news is the WOW price. These are less than half of last year’s price. They are selling fast, so we’ll see you soon.

Mystery bus trip for volunteers The dedicated volunteers who help run the Dargaville Museum, were treated to a mystery bus trip, as a thank you for a year of hard work they have contributed. Thirty-four volunteers visited the Pines Pioneer Bed and Breakfast at Paparoa, for morning tea hosted by Rowie Panhuis. After exploring the house, grounds and

nursery they headed to Whakapirau for a barbecue lunch. The afternoon was spent visiting the Kauri Museum, where the ladies viewed the textile department and the men were hosted by The Engine Boys. Manager, Pene McKenzie said it was a very enjoyable day out.

Outdoor classroom Otamatea High School Board of Trustees has unanimously agreed to establish an ‘outdoor classroom’ for Year 7 and 8 students after years of lobbying from parents and the community. Year 7 and 8 students in larger communities usually attend intermediate, as a stepping stone between primary and secondary schools. While the move is an exciting development for Otamatea High School, there is currently no funding available and the planning committee are appealing to the community for support. “We are converting the existing horticultural area into a separate area for the Year 7 and 8 students, because they’ve come from primary schools that have play areas to a high school setting and all they can do is walk around,” says committee leader, teacher and parent, Heather Truce. “It’s the beginning of something really positive for the school, but it will be expensive and I’ll be putting in lots of funding applications. We have big plans, but we really need support and we’re asking people if they can donate time or even money.” OHS hope the outdoor initiative will also have a positive impact on the school role and help prospective students and parents see that the school is a great place to attend. The academic structure for Year 7 and 8 students is also evolving and for the first time, they will start the New Year with a camp specifically for them. “The project will be completed in stages with a view to create and extend the current area and turn it into an outdoor gym for the whole community and incorporate the Country Club’s new community walkway. “It’s going to be great and the more people that get behind it, the quicker and more easily it will happen.”

Familiar face is new principal at Aranga School

by Joanne Speechly

Aranga School’s senior teacher, Cherise Wilson, has been named as the new principal for 2012, after working at the school for just over a year, teaching the Year 5 to 8 pupils Current principal, Myles Ferris, along with his wife and part-time teacher, Malvina, will be leaving the district, with Cherise moving into the role of principal. A new Scale A permanent teacher will be appointed shortly. Point 5 relief teacher Heather Lupton, will also join the school of 45 students. “With Myles moving to the East Coast the opportunity came up for me to apply for the principal’s position, and it’s a step that I want to take in my career. So I went through the formal process of applying for the job and I’m very happy to be appointed,” said Cherise. Cherise moved to Aranga last year from a teaching position at Upper Hutt. “I saw the position advertised and I’ve been wanting to move up North for some time. The lifestyle suits me and my interests, so I took the plunge and got the job, and I’ve been happy ever since.

“It’s a cleaner, healthier environment up here and I love the outdoors. I also surf and there are heaps of wonderful beaches to go to. “There are a lot of great programmes that are already in place at school that I want to see maintained and further developed, and I’m really excited about the potential we have here. “I’m also very grateful for the huge community support I’ve had through my application process.” After some controversy this year, Aranga School has been recognised as fully compliant with the National Standards and the Ministry of Education. Cherise said that her job now is to see how the National Standards can best work for Aranga School students.

Wellsford Primary’s new deputy principal by Joanne Speechly

Wellsford Primary School’s acting deputy principal is now the permanent deputy principal, and Paul Moore is delighted at the chance to grow personally and professionally Paul will manage the entire senior school and continue as a teacher and says he is looking forward to the challenges and rewards ahead. The native West Aucklander and father of two started teaching in the 1980s, after an already successful career at the Bank of New Zealand and as a stock and commodity trader. However, Paul knew that teaching was his first and foremost passion and applied for training at Epsom. “In my first year of the three-year teacher training, I married Kristine Hay and after securing my first guaranteed teaching position at Manuka Primary, in Glenfield, I began cementing a passion and enthusiasm for teaching young minds. “I remained at Manuka for 10 years and in this time I was coaching school softball, touch, mini ball, rugby and was a keen supporter of school fundraising — especially running discos. “Following the birth of our second child, Jonathan, the busyness of the North Shore started to prompt a change of lifestyle. We started to take day trips north to Warkworth and

later Wellsford and I eventually sent my CV to Wellsford Primary and was offered a permanent position, sight unseen. “Fourteen years have now passed and the students’ enthusiasm and energy have been a constant reward in my life. “When you meet past pupils as young adults, who bound up to you and talk of their time in your life, it dawns on you just how much you have influenced their lives. I love to see children grow socially and academically. “Life is not all teaching, though, my family and I actively run a small lifestyle block just out of town, shepherding a small woolly flock. “I am involved with intermediate and senior cricket at the weekends, regularly support my wife as kitchen hand in her capacity of caterer to Wellsford’s Squash and Golf club and am always keen to be involved in the community days on the Shore, through City Impact Church. “As Wellsford School’s new senior Deputy Principal, I look forward to the challenges and rewards of 2012 and beyond.”

Vibrant Creativity

Dargaville Art Group’s annual exhibition demonstrated the scope of talent their 10 members possess. On display were mosaics, paintings, gift cards, crochet work, photography, painted ostrich eggs, magnets and more. Secretary/treasurer, Elaine McCracken, said the two-week exhibition had been going well and they sold a fair bit of work. “I think the sign of the times is there, people have been purchasing prints and the smaller items, but we haven’t sold as many paintings this time.” Dargaville Art Group meets once a month on Tuesday mornings and they are keen to attract new members. Well known local artist and active group member, Marama Ingle, was a founding member of the group thirty-one years ago.

Circus Kumarani proudly presents . . . The 6th Northland Circus Festival, from Friday, January 13, through to Sunday, January 15, at Kai Iwi Lakes The festival was always intended to be an annual event but was cancelled this year due to lack of shade. “We have been keen to make it happen next year and have always been committed to making it an annual event,” says Circus Kumarani manager, Jenny Huriwai. “We have a marquee and have been working on getting other shade too but we could still do with some more, especially for the campers, if anyone can help out. “We’ll be doing a whole range of workshops over the weekend and are doubling up on some of them to make sure that everyone has an opportunity to have a go. In one hour, we may have six workshops because we’re anticipating about 200 hundred people attending. There will also be games and plenty of entertainment.” Workshops will include acrobatics and acrobalance, diablo, juggling, trapeze, tight wire and stilt and globe walking. There will also be a dedicated unicycle park, open stage nights, a renegade show, an evening glo parade and further entertainment. “The open stage is for anyone who has participated in a workshop to show off what they’ve been doing and the renegade show is

more of a performance. The full gala show on Saturday night is open to the public, so we’ll be selling tickets.” Other highlights during the weekend include circus Olympics, water sports and the mobile trapeze. Further helpers are also needed if people can spare some time. Tickets can be purchased direct from Circus Kumarani, phone on 09 439 5152 or email info@circuskumarani.co.nz.

Health service update

by Joanne Speechly

Coast to Coast Health Care can now boast a 24 to 28 hour waiting time for patients to see a doctor in either Maungaturoto or Mangawhai This is a sharp contrast to last year when the community raised concerns about having to wait two to three weeks to see their family doctor. The clinics also have six to eight acute appointments reserved everyday to deal with people with chronic illness walking in off the street. “Two quarterly community meetings have recently been held in Maungaturoto and Mangawhai to discuss health services in these areas,” said Debbie Evans, CEO of the Kaipara Community Health Trust, “so we thought it was timely to share this information with the wider community.” Sara Lewis, Business Manager for Coast to Coast Health Care says Coast to Coast has six GP clinics, two of which are based in the Kaipara and together the clinics employ over 60 staff. Many staff members have opted for a work-life balance over full time employment and work three days a week. “The shorter working week has created incredible morale and high energy throughout the team and also provides a greater ability to covering sick and holiday leave,” she adds. “We are well prepared for the Christmas break with three locums coming in from the Northern Hemisphere. Roger de Rooij, from the Netherlands, will be covering the Maungaturoto and Wellsford clinics, Katharine Childs, from the UK will cover Mangawhai and Wellsford. The doctors will be here for a period of three to five months enjoying our great weather and lifestyle.” Paparoa has a nurse-led clinic and if the nurse believes a patient needs to see a doctor there are reserved slots allocated for this purpose at the

Maungaturoto Clinic. Patients will be charged just the one fee of $17 to see both the nurse and doctor, if required. In preparation for the holiday season, if people are renting out their bach or home, Debbie suggests pinning details of the closest GP facilities to the fridge or somewhere handy in case it is required.

Santa Claus is back in town

Dargaville Christmas Parade

by Andy Bryenton It’s a busy time of year for Mr Claus — what with those last minute toys to wrap, reindeer to feed and a whole force of elves getting his sleigh ready for the big night. But the jolly chap they call Father Christmas wouldn’t miss a visit or two to the Kaipara — in fact, he’s been spotted in Wellsford, Maungaturoto and Dargaville recently, and is planning an appearance in Ruawai this weekend! “Special thanks have to go to all my wonderful helpers who make these parades possible,” said Mr Claus, on a hotline from the North Pole. “All the good folks who spent time making floats, costumes and decorations — you’re as much a part of creating the magic of Christmas as I am!” Family fun was had by all at Santa’s local engagements, with all kinds of fantastic

characters joining the big man in red for his annual trip to the Kaipara. Everything from storybook favourites to classic hotrods turned out to delight the crowds, and now all eyes are on Santa as he warms up for his big Christmas eve flight. “He’s been on a diet for the last few weeks, and he’s been doing push-ups every morning,” said Mrs Claus. “I’m sure that this year’s going to be a record-beating present drop — he’s ready to hit six billion chimneys and we’ve checked the list twice.” Elves close to Santa’s gym report that the big cheers he received from the Kaipara crowds have proven to be a great motivation. “All we have to do now is put the final polish on Rudolph’s nose . . .” Best wishes, big fella — we’ll be watching the skies on Christmas Eve.

Do you want to sing? With the year coming to an end and the festive season upon us, Ruawai Ace Singers are welcoming new members to come along and find out if the group’s for them. The group started as a Learn to Sing night class at Ruawai College at the beginning of 2009, with Maura Flower and Jen Calthorp as tutors. The government decided to stop funding community education but undeterred, the determined group of flourishing singers started their own classes at the beginning of Term four in 2009. “We decided we still wanted to keep Ruawai Ace Singers going and now pay a sub, which covers our tutors’ fee,” says singer, Dorothy Simpson. “Jen and Maura now come every other week and we meet on Monday nights at the Ruawai College hall, between 6.45 and 9.30pm. We all started off very green but we’ve progressed and now sing a variety of music and also acapella, which is harmony, unaccompanied by music.” Each year the singers have a short spell off over the calving season, although the break was delayed this year as the group, and individual singers, were performing at the Northland Performing Arts competition — and surprised themselves at their success. The group also entertains at community events, such as the Ruawai College Variety Concert and Ruawai Lions, and are keen for new opportunities. “We average about 10 regular members but this may pick up over the summer months and people are welcome to come along and join us. So far the group hasn’t managed to attract any male vocalists but men are welcome to join us.” For more information contact Dorothy Simpson on 09 439 2997.

Seagull race a success

The fourth annual Mighty Northern Wairoa Seagull Race was held at the end of November and attracted about 22 boats, with an increase in local support. Winners in the three outboard categories are all long time supporters of the boat race, with two from the Kaipara and one from Waiotira. “It was an awesome day and when people crossed the finish line they were saying ‘Thanks for organising a fantastic day’,” said organiser, Petrina Mills. “A local, Stuart McCully, won the modified category and he got our trophy this year. We’re really lucky, a friend of ours made us a wooden trophy and it’s of an outboard.” Stuart has been in the competition from the start, but despite it being his fourth year racing, this is his first win. “It took me three and three quarter hours — it’s a long way but I enjoyed it. I saw three swans along the way and another thing that amused me was the cattle along the river bank, watching us go by just like a group of people would. “My next planned trip is one up the Hokianga Harbour, from Omapere up to Horeke and back with the tide. I’ve already done from Omapere up to Rawene.” Another local, Andrew Wallace, won the modern outboard division for the third year running with a 9.9 horsepower outboard on a ‘tinny’ boat — despite a temperamental motor.

Preparing for the big race

“It wouldn’t go on the start line but we got it going and caught up with the others under the bridge,” says Andrew. “One of the spark plug leads jumped off a couple of times on our way up the river. “I think this old motor that we’re using was brought in by a customer for repair but it wasn’t worth fixing, so we mucked around and found some bits for it and it’s still trooping along. It was an awesome day and we’ll be doing it again — see how many years we can win it in a row!” The Mighty Northern Wairoa Seagull Race starts at the Dargaville Boating Club and finishes at Tangiteroria Bridge, with prize giving and a sausage sizzle on the bank.

Urban country and raw country bands will be on stage over both days and the usual entertainment will take place in the shed each evening. “There is suitable flat ground during the weekend for motor homes, campervans and tents,” said organiser, Phil Godfrey. “There may also be limited accommodation close by. “The Urban Country Band will also be doing a gig just 9 kilometres to the south of Aranga, on the evening of Thursday, December 29 and any campers wishing to attend are welcome to stay at Wai Worri from Thursday onwards.” The New Year Country Muster weekends have been held in the present format since 2005. Holiday fun Circus Kumarani is gearing up for another action-packed summer to see children through the holiday season — without getting bored. Their holiday programmes begin in December and some continue through January. Circus Kumarani OSCAR Holiday Programme runs for one week from December 19, with extended hours. The programme, for 5 to 12 year olds, is limited to 13 places.

Waihue farmer’s Trevor and Megan Browning have continued their winning form at the recent Whangarei A & P Show. Their Jersey cow, Totara Dale DR Leeanne EX4, won the Supreme Dairy Cow award. This is the second year the winning cow has collected the award, in which she is judged against all dairy cows. She also won Champion Jersey Dairy Cow in her breed class.

Dargaville Girls’ Brigade

Breakaway School Holiday Programme runs for the same week in December and also runs for the last four weeks of January. The programme also runs at various times in Waipu, Whangarei and Ruawai with different facilitators. This will be the second year that Circus Kumarani has been granted the Ministry of Social Development contract, which is designed for 11 to 17 year olds. It involves a mixture of physical activity, lessons in circus discipline and art. Breakaway School Holiday Programme is free to participants and they can attend for one day or the whole four weeks. However, places are limited to 20, so those interested must register.

1st Dargaville Girls’ Brigade held their awards night recently and presented a play that will be shown at Christmas in the Gardens on December 17. A company of over 60 girls, they have had a great year with fantastic girls and energetic passionate leaders

This Christmas may your days be filled with true friends, close family and precious memories. Merry Christmas from John, Margaret, Adam, Jay, George, Roseanne & Joel.

“We have the Northland Circus Festival at Kai Iwi Lakes in the middle of January so there will be a lot of different people who will come early or stay longer to help out and add their skills to the programme,” says manager, Jenny Huriwai. Circus teacher, Adrian Humm, adds “Come for one day or more — you’ll learn new skills and have a blast!”

Big upgrade for Honda’s service centre It’s been months in the making, but the end result has proven well worthwhile at Dargaville Honda. The local sales and service centre of the popular Japanese brand has had an ‘extreme workshop makeover’, with more room to move and new specialist rooms dedicated to rebuilding and maintaining engines. Since August the team at Dargaville Honda have been working in a bit of a ‘construction site’, as their old workshop more than doubled in size, adding more space for three motorcycle and ATV work benches. The new workshop is far less crowded as a result, bringing added efficiency and faster turnaround times to each job. Off to one side are a pair of dedicated rooms for breaking down and rebuilding engines, as well as an Morfett Auto Services 71 Normanby Street Dargaville 09 439 6377

engineering room fitted out with a lathe and drill press among other cutting-edge tools. Manager Bruce McKenzine is more than pleased with the results of his fourmonth-long project, but he stresses that it could not have happened at all without the help of his team. During the later winter and spring the Honda technical crew have kept working as the building grew around them, keeping their customers on the road (an off-road, of course!) with admirable dedication. Warren and May Suckling are also given great thanks for their role in making the workshop upgrade happen — as are the small army of tradespeople and builders who made Bruce’s plans a reality. Now that the work is done, the real work can continue — the ongoing job of taking care of the Kaipara’s large fleet of Honda ATVs and motorcycles. With all new tools, more space, better lighting and a top-notch team on deck there isn’t a problem that Dargaville Honda can’t tackle in their new workshop. Come and see them to get your machines serviced by the latest and greatest.
