p School kapa haka groups gathered on December 5 at Otamatea High School for the first-ever Toi Maori Festival, an artistic and cultural performance and celebration of the culture of local tangata whenua. MC’d by Ngaroimata Morgan, tutor of Otamatea Kapa Haka, and widely supported by local organisations, businesses and participating schools, the festival delivered everything from harmonic waiata to ‘spine-tingling’ haka performances. Otamatea High School’s own coverage of the day summed up the spirit of the gathering with the following phrase: ‘Ehara taku toa i te toa takitaki, engari he toa takitini’ — The success is not that of the individual, but everyone’. p With a blessing from Kaumatua Rex Nathan and an official seal of approval from Mayor Jason Smith, Dargaville’s latest tourist attraction was opened for the summer holidays. In this case, it’s a very literal attraction for those visiting the town by the Northern Wairoa River; a set of three steel-cut artworks depicting scenes of the river, the native flora and fauna, and our ancestral past. Artists Creole Hunia and Malcolm White provided the creative inspiration and effort, with the boldly painted wooden welcome signs restored and improved by the Menz Shed team and Dargaville Lions. Even better, the artworks will be lit from within at night, creating an attraction that no other town can claim.

p ‘Sending love’ is a programme run by the Dargaville Library, to deliver anonymous festive cards to people who may not otherwise receive them, such as those in hospital or rest home care with no local relatives. In a year when Covid-19 has made international travel impossible and mail slow or unreliable, this community outreach is more important than ever. Head librarian Lisa Salter says the 2019 year saw good participation from local schools, but this year library staff hope that caring individuals and church groups, charitable organisations and families might help with the cause. A festive mailbox has been set up in the library for people to drop off their messages of holiday cheer. The deadline is Monday, December 21, and there is no restriction on whether a card is handmade or bought. Please don’t seal the envelopes, as library staff will check each one to ensure that they are appropriate for their recipients.

p Maungaturoto Volunteer Fire Brigade is reminding residents of the danger the current dry conditions pose after attending a call-out to an out of control blaze at the weekend. The property owner said that while burning an old tree stump, embers had set fire to a nearby flax hedge. “Despite having a shovel and hosepipe to hand, the fire spread very quickly. A huge thank you to the Maungaturoto Fire Service who attended and very quickly extinguished the fire with little damage caused. This could have so easily been much worse,” he said. A restricted fire season is now in force for the Kaipara District.

Young tradespeople honoured u by Andy Bryenton
Northtec’s annual student awards ceremony for up-and-coming builders has delivered a revelation for the traditionally maledominated trade; three of the highest achieving winners of the 2020 New Zealand Institute of Building (NZIOB) awards were young women.
p Three out of seven of the top young tradespeople honoured in last week’s NZIOB awards at Northtec were women, heralding a change for the often male-dominated industry
“The annual NZIOB NorthTec Student awards are a great opportunity for our top students to be showcased to employers. They are also an excellent way for the industry to support trainees and help maintain a pipeline of trained graduates ready to go into work in our region,” said Northtec acting associate director Products and Delivery, Sam Kelly. The awards are held annually to honour the most highly skilled Northtec students in a variety of constructionrelated categories, spanning both the
central Whangarei campus and satellite institutions such as that in Dargaville. The awards were presented by each student’s tutor, which gave them the opportunity to share some of the winners’ inspiring qualities. This year’s winners were Holly Jensen, Johnathon Manukau, Aiden Inia-Sade, Raukawa Michael, Anake Moanaroa-Leismann, Tim Goodwin, Alyshia Foster and Nithin Joseph. All received prizes of cash and equipment to help them as they embark on their careers in the industry. ¢
Forest god’s new protectors u by Andy Bryenton
Tane Mahuta, the ancient kauri, a symbol of Northland and living embodiment of the Maori god of the forest, is now under lock and key after visitor hours. The Department of Conservation has taken further measures to protect the iconic tree against the threat of kauri dieback. New gates have been installed at the entrance to the giant kauri’s home in Waipoua Forest. The gates, along with recent repairs to the viewing platform, will ensure continued safe public viewing and help in the fight against kauri dieback, which is spread by cross-contamination. Kauri roots lie close to the surface of the soil. The action of people and large introduced animal species is a prime vector for a disease that could end the national treasure. “The gates will be locked after 5pm to restrict access to this iconic attraction,” says Department of Conservation Kauri Coast operations manager, Stephen Soole. “Te Roroa and DOC are looking to prevent after-hours and off-track activity at the site, which could spread kauri dieback as we look to protect and conserve this national taonga.” While reflecting the necessity for security, the installation of the gates was also taken as an opportunity to create something aesthetically pleasing. The resulting joint project between local iwi and DOC was designed by Waimamaku local Les
p Beautiful but impenetrable, artisticallydesigned metal gates now block access to Tane Mahuta after hours, in a determined effort to save the great tree from kauri dieback
Toleafoa in conjunction with Te Roroa. The gates were blessed by Te Roroa kaumatua and DOC ranger Tiatoa Rahui at the time of installation. Chair of the Te Roroa Whatu Ora Trust, Thomas Hohaia, called the new measures a “welcome addition in the fight against kauri dieback.” Te Roroa has been awarded several times for their environmental efforts in stopping the spread of the kauri dieback disease, which has struck down many of the Agatha australis species. As yet, there is no definitive cure. Scientists continue to research the possibility of a remedy for the disease. However, in the short-term, measures such as those taken to preserve New Zealand’s most famous tree are the best option. ¢

The voice of the Kaipara u by Andy Bryenton
Kaipara District councillors were out in force across the district during November, attending local market days to ask the public about their views on infrastructure and growth.
p Councillors took to the market days around the Kaipara to quiz residents on their priorities
“Participants at the markets were given three ‘money’ stickers and asked whether they would invest them in roads, water, waste management, climate change, or other things like our parks and libraries,” says the KDC’s media liaison. “More than 600 people took part across the three markets.” The results paint a picture of short-term demand for strengthening infrastructure. The most basic graph delivered the clearest message; 35% of respondents prioritise roading, with a further 20% putting water reticulation and supply first. Waste and recycling management came third with 19%, and
the catch-all ‘everything else’ for parks, libraries and amenities was fourth at 17%. Climate change preparedness was last on the public’s agenda. Digging deeper, 83% of citizens thought that infrastructure spending was best used on the maintenance and renewal of existing networks. A large 77% majority suggested partnerships which would grant external funding as an idea to curb rate increases. Most tellingly, 85% of respondents said that this work needs to begin right now, with no delay. Results of this survey will help inform the long-term plan, which guides the KDC for the next decade. ¢

A festive market Christmas
Noxious weed prompts rahui
u by Andy Bryenton
u by Andy Bryenton
From a small selection of stalls on Labour Day to a bumper crop of local crafts and dining ideas last month, Dargaville’s twilight market day has experienced yet another big expansion for the event’s inaugural Christmas engagement.
A dune lake in Pouto has tested positive for an aggressively invasive aquatic plant, which has the potential to smother out native flora. Authorities are determined to stop its spread to other dune lakes, including Kai Iwi.
p November’s twilight markets were an expansion on October’s, and the pre-Christmas event has once again boosted the numbers of stalls and dinner options enticing patrons
At the time of print, forty stalls had confirmed their placement, as the market day, hosted by the Northern Wairoa Boating Club, enters its third month. Dates have been released for markets all the way through summer and into autumn based on the success of the November gathering, which saw everything from seedlings and customwelded sculptures to a sausage sizzle and ice creams. Event organisers from the NWBC have been impressed with the turnout by locals and wish to offer their thanks to all of those who made the November markets such a success. Looking ahead, the prime consideration for the club is no longer whether their
enterprise will be well patronised, but how to manage space and access to a growing number of stalls for a growing number of guests. Plans are in place, however, to make any future expansion a smooth one. The twilight market day takes place from 5pm at the Northern Wairoa Boating Club’s clubrooms, which will be open to serve food and beverages after what is forecast to be a warm day. Street food vendors and a wide variety of holiday gift ideas will be on display, and the ‘brains trust’ behind the markets say that it is a perfect opportunity to bring the family, as many schools break up for the year just hours before the market begins. ¢

Shelley Paniora from the Department of Conservation spoke out about the weed infestation in a joint press release with Te Uri o Hau this week. “Hornwort, an invasive aquatic weed, has been discovered by a member of the public in a dune lake on Pouto Peninsula,” said Paniora. “Local iwi, Te Uri o Hau, is now working with DOC, the Northland Regional Council and NIWA to find the best way to combat this weed and reduce spread to other lakes on the peninsula. “It’s a huge threat to the pristine dune lake system in Pouto,” says Te Uri o Hau kaitiaki, Colin French. “Hornwort is spread by people and can attach itself to boats, fishing gear, snorkelling equipment and the like, and be transported to the next water body to invade.” Hornwort has the potential to choke out other growth and completely colonise otherwise p Preventing the spread of aquatic weeds this summer pristine lakes in the Poutojust became more important, as invasive hornwort has been discovered in Pouto west coast ecosystem. It was originally introduced as an ornamental aquarium plant, but escaped to the wild “The best method for ensuring through human negligence. The annual tournament, hosted by Dargaville icon Nola Sports, attracted a competitive crowd who battled it out over five fish species and a teams prize on the day. The top team proved to be Team Dust Off, made up of anglers Jason and Tyler Sanford, Ben Wade and James Plooy. Their combined fish weigh-in cracked the 31-kilogram mark for gold. The top kingfish was reeled in by Julz Caine, weighing a whopping 19.56 kilograms. Joe Ranginui and Isaac Te Wheoro were runners up. James Robertson took out the top gurnard prize, followed by Jamie Morris and Jill Blackwood. Trevally top honours went to Colin Flavell with both the first and second place in the species category, sharing the podium with third-placed Evan Paxton. Landfill protest case completed u by Paul Campbell
The Fight the Tip movement has completed presenting its submission against the proposed mega landfill for Auckland rubbish in the Dome Valley with commissioners sitting at public hearings for the past five weeks. The hearing is to decide whether Auckland’s Waste Management Ltd gets the green light to establish a dump, which opponents, including local councils and iwi, say will pose a pollution danger to the Kaipara Harbour. FTT executive member, Michelle Carmichael said she was ‘heartened’ by the feedback from the commissioners. “They thanked us, praising our hard work, effort, conduct and presentation. They had no questions for us following our presentations, clarifying that this was not a slight on us but a reflection of the effort and work put in. We made our position
and evidence clear. They also thought it was fitting to complete the five weeks of hearings with Fight the Tip and our own submissions. “I believe they have sincerely listened to us all and all of our concerns. “I have true faith that they will rule in favour of what is best for the environment, water and future of how we deal with our waste. “At this stage, Waste Management has requested an extension so that they can do their rebuttal in late January, instead of over the next few days. The commissioners’ decision will follow that, so maybe we will hear sometime during February or March.“
Restricted fire ban Summer fire restrictions are now in place in Kaipara. As of 8am Monday, December 14 the district has been moved to a restricted fire season due to the increasingly dry fuel conditions in Northland. It means a permit is required to light any open air fire including bonfires, rubbish fires and in unapproved incinerators. For more information, or to apply for a permit, visit checkitsalright.nz/.

Brown town u by Brian Eastwood
When Northland shipbuilders Lane and Brown of Whangaroa agreed to split up in 1901, partner William Brown decided to move to Te Kopuru and set up his own shipbuilding yards. Drive along Norton Street in 2020 and before you turn at the far end, head straight down the no-exit Bickers Road to the bottom of the hill. You are now in the place that Te Kopuru locals of the time nicknamed Brown Town. Five houses lined the short road, one of them built and owned by RH Bradley and one was the Brown homestead. Those two homes were shifted by barge to Mangawhare around 1921, and both are still standing in River Road. EK Bradley, who lived most of his boyhood days at the far end of Bickers Road, wrote in his book Great Northern Wairoa, ‘William Brown, popularly known as Grandpa, was a man of sterling qualities. Deeply religious, he never missed an opportunity to say a kindly word to his fellow men who were all treated with the greatest respect.’ Brown’s shipyard was an impressive place. There was a sawmill, engineering shop, blacksmith, boiler room and steam engine room, paint shop and sail loft. Small boats were built in a two-storey building with a bigger shed for larger craft near the riverbank. Two slipways handled launching and hauling of ships. A wharf was built on the river and smaller ones on the nearby creek. One of the first ships to come out of Brown and Sons’ yards was a schooner

they named Alert, built especially for carrying coal. Brown’s own ship Echo was constructed for the timber trade to the South Island. She ended life as Marlborough Cruising Club’s clubhouse on Picton’s foreshore. Many more vessels, big and small, came from Brown Town and were to be seen working all around New Zealand. Within a few years, Browns had branched out into other work. Two high profile projects were the recovery of the Waiti capsized in front of the
Mangawhare Hotel in 1909 and buying for £15 the Anglo Norman, a Norwegian barque wrecked at Kaipara Heads. The firm of Brown and Sons and their work became known far and wide. There was a large family of seven sons and two daughters. Daughter Kate never married. Always known as Aunty Kate, she lived her later life in the Brown homestead in River Road. The other daughter married Charles Hansen, for many years a senior member of the Te Kopuru Bus Company.
Two sons went off to Auckland and another to Canada. One went farming at the end of a side road in Parore consequently named Brown Road, while three remained in Dargaville. After the first world war, they began an engineering business known as Brown and Sons, later Brown and Mawson, and eventually Mawson Engineering. The highly-respected William Brown died in 1930 at the age of 80 after a busy life well lived. ¢

Market becomes charity Kitten season relief

u by Ann van Engelen
u by Andy Bryenton
The Mangawhai Community Market recently relocated to the Mangawhai Beach School grounds and became a charitable trust with the school becoming the currently designated benefactor.
The Dargaville Veterinary Centre is teaming up with the SPCA to deliver a seasonal opportunity to cat owners and appreciators; a vastly discounted ‘snip and chip’ programme which enables a cat to be desexed and microchipped for just $10.
p The Mangawhai Community Gala is a popular annual event for the community and visitors alike
“The market is run by volunteers and has been a huge success for approximately 15 years. We moved to the school from the village hall in October with a new five-year resource consent to continue operating,” says treasurer Natalie Barlow. “It is thanks to previous market owners, Keith and Marita Draper, passing the market to the community last February that we can support the school. “This month we donated a cheque of $2,000 to the school.” Stallholders pay a weekly fee for the space they occupy. As part of the charitable status, surplus funds are donated quarterly to Mangawhai Beach School. “By supporting the market, customers are supporting the community. It is
predominantly a local market with something for everyone, including fresh fruit and vegetables, honey, homemade pies and baking, flowers, locally roasted coffee, cheeses, plants, clothing, soaps and crafts. “The school has more space and parking available. We appreciate the locals supporting what we do. Without them, we would not be as successful as we are. “Handing over the first cheque to the school was a wonderful accomplishment. Mr Kemp has ongoing projects, and the funds will help them immensely.” Upcoming Christmas market dates are Saturday, December 19, Wednesday, December 23 and Saturday, January 2 from 9am–1pm at Mangawhai Beach School. ¢

History’s greatest christmas presents u by Andy Bryenton
As December rolls around, it’s interesting to note that so many important holidays come under the same general time of year. Hanukkah, Christmas, and Kwanzaa all fall at the same time as the old pagan Yule and Japanese Omisoka because traditionally, this is the end of one year and the beginning of the next. What better time for a celebration of rebirth, togetherness and good food? During the years there has been some amazing holiday presents given, too. Here are some examples. Aside from the gifts of the three wise men, said to have been delivered to newborn Jesus of Nazareth, a standout from early history is the gift of Chinese general Guangwu to his emperor in AD 36. By defeating the separatist Chengjia on December 25, he effectively gifted his ruler the entirety of China. Another hard-to-wrap gift was handed out on Christmas AD 333 by Constantine the Great, who gave his son the title of Caesar and command of the newly Christian Roman Empire. Two years later the first Christmas holiday was celebrated, with time off work for Roman commoners and slaves. It was considered lucky to become king on Christmas day for centuries. Viking Sveyn Forkbeard, Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne and William the Conqueror all got a crown under the
tree, thus also avoiding paying for two big feasts. Christopher Columbus got an unwanted gift he couldn’t return in 1492 when on Christmas day his ship ran aground in Haiti. All he got for the holidays was more saltwater than he needed. George Washington crossed the Delaware River on Christmas Day in 1776, with his ‘present’ the defeat of a British mercenary force at Trenton. A later president, Andrew Johnson, gave the gift of forgiveness to every single southern soldier who had fought in the American Civil War, on December 25, 1868. In 1950, one Scots nationalist university student had a big ‘prezzie’ to wrap up. He and fellow patriots had stolen the Stone of Scone, a relic which is said to be required to crown kings of Scotland. It stayed hidden until 1951. In 1968 Apollo 8 became the first spacecraft to return to Earth from lunar orbit, giving the gift of unseen photos of the moon. For freedom-loving eastern
p Big gifts — from the gold, frankincense and myrrh of the Magi to the entire Chinese and Roman empires and military victories, Christmas has been a time of conspicuous generosity for centuries
Europeans, the biggest Christmas gift of all, however, was the December 25, 1991 dissolution of the Soviet Union. Meanwhile, we can thank a Christmas birthday for the greatest holiday song
of them all. Shane MacGowan, who penned Fairytale of New York, was born on December 25 and channelled his holiday-birthday angst into the bittersweet tune. ¢

Post a letter to Santa
HAVE A
u by Andy Bryenton
It’s confirmed; a direct line for old-fashioned mail has been established to the North Pole just in time for Christmas. Fosters has set up a post box, which will link up between New Zealand’s postal service and Santa’s own ElfMail to get kids’ requests to the man in red on time. The post box, inside Fosters’ Dargaville store, is two-way; letters will be replied to by Santa Claus himself, who famously uses his Christmas powers to answer every single letter sent to him by kids worldwide. Scientists speculate that this is the same power, which allows the legendary Father Christmas to deliver more than one billion presents via sleigh on a single night. Parents may recall sending their own letters to Santa when they were young. Santa first visited a New Zealand shop in 1894, dropping in on the D.I.C. department store in Wellington to hand out presents. In 1905 he turned up in Wellington by train with his wife, Mrs Claus. Not content to be predictable, he arrived in Auckland riding an elephant in 1930 and parachuted into the Auckland Domain in 1937. During all these appearances Santa looked exactly the same, proving that so long as there is Christmas, he will never age.

RSA hosts festive feast u by Andy Bryenton
The tradition of a Christmas Day feast hosted by the Hakaru RSA continues this year, with the president and club members opening up an invite to the community to join them for a traditional holiday lunch. “The Hakaru RSA is putting on a Christmas lunch for anyone who may be on their own or would like to be amongst others on Christmas Day,” say hosts Jonathan Bell and the RSA committee. They acknowledged that, especially in this year of Covid travel restrictions,

many people might otherwise face a lonely Christmas. “Lunch starts at noon, and the cost is only $10 a head. Paying forward to assist those who may not be able to afford the $10 cost or offering your time, donating food for the lunch, would also be gratefully received.” This range of options to assist in making it a merrier holiday means that almost anyone can pitch in toward the community spirit of the event, even if they have other commitments on the day. Those with foodstuffs to donate or who wish to ‘pay it forward’ a lunch to provide a seat at the banquet for someone of limited means can contact the RSA on 09 431 2176. Warm welcome for Santa
Crowds lined the pavements from Wood Street to the Mangawhai Activity Zone as a parade of classic cars, festive floats and even a boat or two rolled in to deliver holiday cheer to Kaipara’s east coast. Early clouds broke to reveal a proper summer’s day as the parade got moving, heralded by the lights and sirens of the local police. A kilometres-long snake of decorated vehicles followed, with many major businesses and clubs wrapping their machinery in tinsel and garlands, from bulldozers to waka, golf carts to concrete mixers. All were filled with
costumed revellers who threw sweets, fired water pistols and waved to the crowds perched on cafe balconies and lining the sides of the road. When the initial fun was done, the MAZ became a hub for barbecues, skateboarding and relaxation in the shade before Christmas carols and a concert in the afternoon. ¢

EMERGENCY NUMBERS New plan for firefighters u by Andy Bryenton
Fire and Emergency New Zealand, the body which governs all local fire brigades, both volunteer and full time, is altering its fire plan for the whole of Northland. Fire service bosses want input from locals as to how they could improve the firefighting and prevention rules here. Indicating that this might be the most major change to the guidelines since 1977, FENZ is keen to hear from the public. As they explain it: “A fire plan outlines policies and procedures, specific to a local region, for the management of public safety, and fire risks. “Each fire plan outlines things like declaring the beginning and end of fire seasons, prohibiting and restricting fire use, and the issuing of fire permits. Fire plans also provide increased transparency to the public about how FENZ’s fire control powers are used.”
Available these holidays for all your glass emergencies & callouts.
This can have a significant impact in a rural area, and getting it right is a matter of saving lives. Therefore, FENZ has made the Northland fire plan, proposed by experienced firefighters and administrators Myles Taylor, Wipari Henwood and Brad Mosby, available online to address public questions. One of the biggest of those is whether the plan is transparent enough when it comes to detailing just when and how FENZ will enact fire control measures, and if these measures go far enough. A full overview is available at fireandemergency.nz/publicconsultation and it’s advised that all

The best part of this course is that we’re out there doing up a community building in town, not just sitting in a classroom. We got some experience here first stripping down and painting some old church pews, and we had to organize the business side of the town job sorting out things like the scaffolding and pricing, but we mostly learn by doing. In what proved to be a difficult year for us all, especially auto manufacturers, there have nevertheless been some standout models which have progressed technology and style, comfort and safety in the realm of driving technology. Now the time is close when a supreme winner will be crowned. New Zealand’s motoring favourites reflect the seismic shift toward the SUV and crossover. Only the Toyota Yaris and Ford Fiesta are in the top 10 to represent the classic concept of the car, and both of them are compact hatches. Sports utilities are represented by the Audi Q3, Kia Seltos, Land Rover Defender, Mazda CX-30, Mercedes-Benz EQC, MercedesBenz GLB, Peugeot 2008 and Skoda Kamiq. While the Defender is most likely king of off-road abilities in this bunch, the versatile Seltos and those two feature-packed and stylish Mercs are a real challenge. The king of vehicle sales for 2020 is the elephant in the room wearing blue. Once again the Ford Ranger dominates in sheer popularity, beating all comers with some nifty new engine and gearbox options as the machine introduced in 2011 attenuates its reign. Ford also grand-slammed the van market with the Transit Custom, a van which looks and feels sporty, quite a feat. In the zone of actual sports cars, Toyota’s Gazoo Racing Yaris with its almost bosozoku-level body kit and snarling rally-hungry engine make for

a top contender. dishing up fun at a cheaper price than the brutal new mid-engined Chevrolet Corvette or the scalpel-precise Porsche Cayman 718; if you can get your hands on one. If you like it loud and classic inspired, the Shelby name is back on a 350 GT Mustang, or if money is no object then perhaps you’d agree with Autocar magazine in the UK and fancy a McLaren 720s. Then again, New Zealand may soon be following the trend in Europe, where all
three top contenders for European Car of the Year went to electric vehicles, the Porsche Taycan, Tesla Model 3 and the winner, the Peugeot 208. Range anxiety still rules many people’s choices via a vis electric here down under, but there might be a happy medium. If you’d like a fuel-sipping, economical crossover SUV that looks like a hot hatch and drives with a bit of spirit, try the new Ford Puma. Despite the wealth of choices, it might be our pick for 2020’s best. ¢

Saints or sinners u by Andy Bryenton
Electric technology is everywhere in the automotive world today. From a small fringe selection of weird and wonderful eco cars to a mainstream powerhouse of sales, electric vehicles are here to stay. Even the naysayers are coming around, along with one of the most traditional companies on the modern road. When it comes to keeping up old traditions and utilising tried and tested technology, Harley-Davidson would put the most set-in-his-ways Victorian butler to shame. With a client base who love their old classics to the point of having engine diagrams tattooed on their arms, a ridership who ascribe to a vision of the classic rebel, and a back catalogue of some of the most iconic bikes of the 20th century, they make Rolls-Royce look positively millennial in their outlook. Some Harley riders will gladly fight you over the merits of pushrods or air cooling, which, it has to be said, is an impressive level of brand loyalty. Nothing sounds and feels like a big Harley, though, so maybe they have a point. Which is why many bike fans were floored when this bastion of V-twin dominance came out and admitted that they were going to make an electric motorcycle. To the uninitiated in bike lore, this would be like Mike Tyson revealing that he was going to star as Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, or like McDonald’s introducing a pizza. But it turns out that the heart of Harley-

Davidson is rebellious to this day. While other bike brands stuck to pistons, they developed the livewire, an allelectric machine, which is their biggest departure from the norm since the V-rod, and goes a whole lot further. Here’s the thing, though. It looks unmistakably like a Harley. It’s quick, with that all-electric instant torque delivery that makes supercars fear the family Tesla; and while the soundtrack of big rumbling pipes is gone, there’s a presence here which reminds you not of the classic Lowriders, Road Kings and
Fat Boys of the past, but of the fact that in the early days, when everyone else was bolting single pistons to bicycle frames, Harley was making the first V-twins and staying ahead of the curve. You’ll either love this bike for what it is; a 230 kilometre a charge practical, fun riding experience, or hate it for not being a traditional Harley. That’s all you can fault it for, really, aside from range issues common to all electrics. Before you judge, be rebellious enough to buck tradition and give it a try. ¢
