KAIPARA LIFESTYLER
A message from the publisher Festive greetings, and a warm welcome to this year-end edition of the Kaipara Lifestyler, proudly published by Integrity Community Media Ltd and our flagship regional weekly newspaper, which services the wider Kaipara area. In this age of sometimes digital and electronic overload, we believe it is a refreshing experience to be able to sit back at leisure and be informed in print and entertained at a pleasant and relaxed level. My wife Pat and I came to Dargaville from Auckland metropolitan newspapers more than two decades ago, and we have grown our company through a time of seeing the Kaipara’s fortunes ebb and flow. Happily, much of the turbulence of the period is firmly in the past, and with a newly elected council, which appears to be focussed on a dream and a vision looking forward, we are on a journey to much bigger p Allan Mortensen Managing Director of Integrity and brighter things. KAIPARA LIFESTYLER December 17 - 2019
Welcome to the Kaipara Summer holidays are the best time of the year around Kaipara District. It seems there’s an extra sparkle in the air as schools go down and Christmas trees and tents go up, winter layers get castoff, and the sunblock goes on. Water tanks and gas barbecue bottles get filled before the summer rush of extra guests arrive. It is the time of year ideal for discovering, perhaps for the first time, what’s special about Kaipara District. There’s a natural wonderland in store for everyone, including the longest drivable beach in New Zealand (Ripiro Beach on the west coast), the best dune lake system in the country (Kai Iwi Lakes at Taharoa Domain) as well as contrasting pairs of lifeguard-patrolled spectacular surf beaches, harbours and coastlines to explore on the east and west sides of the district. Welcome to all visitors here for the first time. I recommend everyone takes some time to get off the beaten track and explore the villages, towns, settlements and communities spread across Kaipara District. Each of which has a unique sense of place and abundance of wellbeing about it. This special summer edition of the Kaipara Lifestyler may guide you to places you’ve never been to or known much about, even if you’ve been here a while. It seems the population of Kaipara District doubles at this time of year. Some visitors are new, some are returning, and some of us like my family and me stay here through the summer holiday season — because we reckon there’s no finer place to be. In this broad area, there are plenty of spots for everyone to find a place in the sun (or under a shady tree), plenty

K A I PA R A T H E N
Looking back in Kaipara time u by Paul Campbell
Perhaps one of the only things that has not undergone a significant change in Kaipara since those early days of Maori settlement followed much later in the 1860s by the hardy Albertlander settlers from the northern hemisphere has been the mighty expanse of the Kaipara Harbour. Even today, with the hand of man adding to silt run-off from cleared farming land, it is still an aquatic playground and source of seafood — kai moana. However, the landscape has changed from the mists of time when huge kauri forests trees, patrolled by giant moa, myriads of lesser birds and with her seas and rivers abundant in fish — a place as near perhaps to paradise as ever existed. First came the Maori, a people that sailed ocean-going doubled canoes out of the vast reaches of the Pacific, across the wide ocean tides and currents, cloud and winds that led them to Aotearoa, The Land of the Long White Cloud. For centuries these first immigrants built their pa fortresses, establishing society and culture that gave birth to legends that remain today as an often shared spiritual connection with the pakeha New Zealander of European descent, and so too, to the many new New Zealanders who have come to these shores in more recent years. The early Maori, in fact, named Kaipara. A fern called para was good
to eat (kai — food) — thus Kai-para became a place name. In the mid-1860s, the first major arrival of settlers from Europe came from people seeking freedom from Europe’s established social regimes. The Auckland Provincial Government offered assisted passages to immigrants from England and wider Europe. The northern Kaipara Harbour was selected for settlement with a man offered 40 acres of land with a further 40 for his wife and 20 acres for each member of his family between the ages of 5 and 18. In May 1862 the first party, of what became known as Albertlanders set sail from the East India Docks in London. After some 100 days at sea, the immigrants were sent off to their place of settlement on the Kaipara. Maps prepared by ill-informed and over-enthusiastic promoters in dingy London coffee shops indicated that wide roads crossed the land to the north from Auckland, the port of immigrant disembarkation. Wagon wheels were thus loaded in London and tied to the ship’s rails for

the long voyage southwards. However on arrival, and the true nature of the Kaipara settlement revealed, these immigrants sold them in Auckland before they went by sea up the west coast to the then coastal hamlet of Mangawhai, or through Helensville to the southern Kaipara harbour and northwards by whaleboat. From there it was a slow and arduous journey across bush-covered land to Kaiwaka and on by tidal waterway to Port Albert, once to be a capital to rival Auckland, but which was not to be. In
ensuing years, more migrants fanned out to claim land in and around the emerging settlements of Maungaturoto, Whakapirau, Pahi, Paparoa, Matakohe, and on to Ruawai and Dargaville. An area of 70,000 acres of land is home to these towns, with many surrounding farms still in the hands of settler families today. The route via Helensville, then a timber milling town gorging on the huge Northland kauri forest, was taken by the Smith family still resident in the Matakohe area today and with founding

connections to the iconic Kauri Museum, where this brief history can be viewed in-depth and detail by today’s visitor or resident. The Smith matriarch was the first European woman to step ashore at Matakohe that afternoon in November 1862, and the family went into farming and kauri milling. As families moved onto their allocated blocks, to face years of clearing bush and breaking in the land, husbands and fathers needed income. They headed off to dig for kauri gum while the magnificent straight-grained
many nations, and later buildings rose in Sydney Town and as far away as Los Angeles, after a major earthquake. A forest of more than a million hectares in the mid-1800s had by then been reduced by 90 per cent. Kaipara Harbour is one of the largest in the world. It extends for some 60 kilometres from north to south and has catchments feeding five rivers that emerge from drowned valleys, earning them the name of salt rivers, and more than a hundred streams. The harbour heads are dangerous. Waves from the Tasman Sea
timber-built early bush cabins, and later more established homes and indeed public buildings, schools and churches, while more were exported as a backbone of the fledgeling colonial economy. For the gum, much of it destined to make the newly-discovered linoleum floor covering, these men worked mainly in wetlands and swamps where once there were ancient kauri forests and around 450,000 tons, worth £25 million, were sent to England or North America between 1850 and 1950. Huge tranches of timber first served as masts and spars for sailing ships of
break across large sandbanks about five metres below the surface, two to five kilometres from the shore, an area, called The Graveyard and responsible for more shipwrecks than any other place in New Zealand. Despite the perilous bar at the harbour entrance, the Kaipara became a busy timber port from the 1860s, shipping thousands of tonnes of kauri timber and gum. Dargaville was established on the timber and gum trade 30 kilometres upstream of the Northern Wairoa River.
HOLIDAY INFORMATION FROM PENNY SMART NORTHLAND REGIONAL COUNCIL COUNCILLOR FOR KAIPARA WARD
AS WE ALL BEGIN TO WIND DOWN AND LOOK FORWARD TO SOME RELAXING HOLIDAY TIME, I WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH YOU AN ISSUE THAT CONCERNS OUR NORTHLAND BEACHES AND DUNES Four-wheel drives, dune buggies and motorbikes are an increasingly common sight on our Kaipara beaches. Sand dunes are important bands of sand between the land and sea. They act as buffer areas to help protect the land, people and houses from storm surges, cyclones and even tsunami. Sand dunes are very sensitive to vehicles driving over them. All motor vehicles and bikes can kill plants with a single pass — even the wide flotation tyres of quad bikes or the small wheels of kids’ motorbikes can crush and kill plants and the creatures that live in them. Some things to remember as we use our Kaipara and Northland beaches: • Always use established vehicle access routes onto the beach and then travel on the hard sand below the high tide mark to minimise your impact on the dunes and beach. • Drive with care near the water, as vulnerable shellfish beds tend to be situated there. • Keep motorbikes (including kids’ bikes) off the dunes. Motorbikes can do just as much damage to sand dunes as bigger vehicles. • Avoid driving close to marine mammals such as seals. • Respect archaeological sites — many beaches carry evidence of centuries-old Māori occupation.
The following organisations all share some responsibility for managing vehicles on beaches: • Northland Regional Council Set regional rules for the use of the tidal section of beaches and have a role in setting policies for managing the wider coastal environment, including sand dunes (region dependant). • Northland’s three District Councils — Kaipara, Whangārei and Far North Are responsible for the management and use of vehicle access routes to beaches within their respective districts and on their reserves. • Department of Conservation The Department sets national policies on coastal management, manages its local coastal reserves and protects native birds and animals that are threatened or endangered (region dependant). • Police The Police regulate driving behaviour and illegal vehicle use and drivers on beaches as well as on roads. Police can prosecute for criminal behaviour and bylaw breaches. Making a complaint If you wish to make a complaint about a vehicle on the beach, please get as many details as possible without putting your own safety at risk, including

A future bright and busy u by Paul Campbell
The future is all about communications, and the leaps and bounds of progress are myriad. Be it new generations of smart cell phones that do everything but think for the user, or even sometimes, one must wonder if, in fact, these devices do have a mind of their own. The Kaipara, however, is very much aware of the need for practical technology, as a stepping stone for every facet of life on the toad to the future. Tiny Tinopai country primary school has a fundraising programme to introduce a digital learning curriculum for its pupils, through to Dargaville’s roll-out of CCTV surveillance cameras, which are credited with a big boost in safety and security in the town. There is hardly a home or a business, be it
a retail shop, a motel, horticultural or stock farming enterprise that can do without a computer. Fortunately, Kaipara is fast getting up to speed with electricity supplier Northpower leading the way. Josie Boyd, general manager Network Assets, says Northpower is looking forward to continuing its partnership with Crown Fibre Holdings and embarking on a further expansion of the ultra-fast broadband network. network build will begin in April 2020, Maungaturoto in June 2020, and Ruawai in November 2020. Work on the Paparoa network will start in January 2021 and be completed in May 2021. “Fibre broadband is a real enabler for our community, and we see building fibre networks as a future-proofing investment in our business,” says Mrs Boyd. It is not only digital communication that is enhancing life in Kaipara, as there have been huge improvements in roading with great plans for more. The multimillion-dollar gateway on State Highway 12 at Matakohe has bypassed two ageing single-lane bridges with a modern motorway correcting a
century-old choke point into Kaipara, speeding up the passage of all traffic and goods and services. As this edition goes to press, Transit NZ has begun work re-establishing a poor section of that same highway between Naumai and Tokatoka. Work that during this summer, will hinder holiday traffic, but bodes well for Kaipara communication when it is completed. NZTA asks for forbearance and patience accordingly. Similar work, involving a bridge is underway in Mangawhai, with a corresponding call from Kaipara District Council for care and consideration to allow work to succeed during the holiday period.

Add to that, cold and wet winters and so on – it can be an unpleasant environment, but then you are getting ready to get into the air and you know it’s an emergency, you are helping someone and all that stuff doesn’t seem important anymore.”
“We moved to Whangarei for this role. This is a dream role for a helicopter pilot – you work with great machines, and a really good team, to make a difference to people’s lives. Even if it is just a transfer between hospitals, it is still making that person’s life better for it,” he says.
“Flying people with injuries in or out was very unusual in my last role, whereas every day it is something different here. It makes it an interesting role.”
“When you help another person, you are achieving in life, and we get to do that every day.”
“I can’t name one highlight so far – there have been so many.” The scenery gives both challenges and joy, he says.

K A I PA R A N OW The Kaipara is booming with new arrivals, many of them seeking space and lifestyle as the big city life in Auckland becomes ever more restrictive. New businesses are appearing, continuing the district’s role as a source of wealth for the rest of the country. A proposed $8.4 million Kaipara complex to house up to 80 local authority staff from two different councils is yet another sign of ongoing confidence in Dargaville’s future. The proposed Hokianga Road building will be developed by the Northland Regional Council and about a dozen of its field staff would be based there. Kaipara District Council with about 65 of its staff would also be a key tenant. Travel through Kaipara’s towns and villages today, and you will find boutique accommodation at picturesque bed and breakfasts, fine arts and crafts, superb shopping, fine food and wine. All the stuff of urban living, without the traffic lights and parking meters. For the summer holidays, it is hard to beat our fine camping grounds. Pahi Beach Holiday Park has upgraded its facilities to match the best. There are harbourside camp and caravan sites overlooking the water at Matakohe, Tinopai and as far as Pouto in Kaipara North Head. Kaipara District has the fastestgrowing population of any North Island district in the last six years, at 20.6% growth. That means one in every five people in the Kaipara today has arrived in the last six years, bringing new citizens, new residents, new energy,

investments and ideas. The future of the Kaipara is growing fast, particularly in the east and along with this comes a cross-pollination of energy and ideas. Should a holiday visit spark a desire for a more permanent Kaipara experience, there are fine educational opportunities. Otamatea and Ruawai Colleges, Dargaville High School, add to many primary schools, some 22 in all, with the teacher to pupil ratios that are the envy of many urban facilities. Medical services are first class with centres at Wellsford at the gateway to the region, at Mangawhai, Maungaturoto and Dargaville with its regional hospital facility, as well as medical practitioners’
clinics elsewhere. Libraries, art galleries, amateur theatre groups and sports facilities abound, and for a night at the cinema with first-run films, there’s the Anzac Theatre in Dargaville. From the Pacific east coast at Mangawhai to Baylys Beach on the west coast Tasman Sea, there are myriad attractions and indeed, and also a chance perhaps to explore real estate and business opportunities. Perhaps a particular lodestone for the future is the proposal to replace Auckland port with Northport at Whangarei — a possibility that heralds a golden area for the Kaipara District. KAIWAKA
A gateway town on the highway Travelling north on State Highway One, you arrive in Kaipara some way before the Brynderwyn turn-off that many arrivals regard as the gateway proper, perhaps for the plethora of signage at the intersection there. The gateway to the district is at Kaiwaka, and seasoned holidaymakers, visitors and, of course, residents will have noticed new speed restrictions in this ‘little town of lights’ that makes for a smoother transition of the builtup area. The residents’ light decorations are a major Christmas holiday feature of the town and add a great sparkle to greet the visitor and passers-by. Kaiwaka, a one hour drive from Auckland, roadworks and congestion permitting, of course, is a riverside community linked by waterway to the Kaipara Harbour and ultimately the Tasman Sea and close to Mangawhai Heads and beaches on the Pacific coast. It first served as a stopover for the migration of Albertland settlers arriving after a long sea voyage from Europe in the 1860s. Rather than continue into the unknown bushland that surrounded the harbour back then, some stayed in the village and soon swelled the fledgeling outpost into a community providing goods and services to the more adventurous souls who went on
to establish farms that are still thriving today, and indeed, still trading with the town. Kaiwaka’s Te Pounga Marae and meeting house are a traditional meeting place for Te Uri O Hau and Ngati Whatua people.

Today the township is a welcome stop whether to replenish the coffee cup or stock up with other necessities of life before a continued journey north or a branch off to the Kaipara towns of Mangawhai to the east or greater Kaipara through to Dargaville to the west. For some, it is also a base for day trips to those destinations and the Kauri Coast, and as such, there’s a range of accommodation options. It is easy to visit scenic east and west coast locations. You’ll find fishing, diving, surfing and other aquatic activities and
with walking and climbing too. The town has an arty coffee stop, cheese factory shop and an Italian bakery. Making it an ideal place for buying provisions for that picnic or holiday larder — including fresh seafood. All the facilities of a vibrant community are available, a garage and service station, supermarket and also a thriving sports club. Today, as mentioned above, Kaiwaka is known as ‘The Little Town of Lights’ after enterprising locals decorated their home. The town business and community groups followed suit, to create Christmas splendour by night.

Mangawhai is the easternmost point in the Kaipara district, situated on the azure coast south of Bream Bay, where the offshore islands known as the Hen and Chickens form a stunning backdrop and the fishing is legendary. Sun, sand, surf and a holiday atmosphere are the order of the day in this popular beachfront town — but there’s more beneath the surface. Mangawhai’s rich history is on display at the town’s modern museum, complete with stories of the pioneering past and the golden era of bach life in the mid 20th century. Art and creativity play a big part in the lifestyle of modern Mangawhai, with galleries and workshops, artisanal stores and boutique crafts flourishing. There’s consequently a balance between the traditional and the avant-garde here. From the classic old colonial tavern, where a historic pier is planned to be built, through to the ever-growing Mangawhai Activity Zone with its fitness station, skate park and playgrounds, from the museum to the pioneer village next door, Mangawhai combines the relaxed pace of a Kiwi holiday town with a bit of added sophistication. That means it’s as easy to find handmade master-crafted chocolates, imported single-malt whiskeys and

Do you want to dine outdoors, with a top chef in the kitchen? Would you prefer takeaways and a beach blanket? Or perhaps a cold craft beer and a slice of pizza? You could always visit one of the nation’s most awarded butchers and fire up the barbecue, or reel in your own catch from the ocean. Mangawhai offers options for recreation, too, from the stunning views afforded by walking the region’s trails, taking photographs from the clifftops, enjoying the surf at the point or the quiet, safe waters of the lagoon with its mighty sand dunes. Accommodation could be anything from a luxurious country bed and breakfast through to canvas under the stars. Poised on the cusp of huge popularity and growth, Mangawhai is a playground not to be missed, where the oldfashioned bach-and-caravan lifestyle meets the amenities of a modern seaside resort town in a blend that’s as favourable as ice cream and espresso.

MANGAWHAI
From Canada to the Kaipara Barrel racing, roping, riding and heading out on the trails with a trusted horse as a companion; it sounds like a fine time in the old west, as imagined by adventure-seekers. It’s the real-life experience of Steve Allen, a Mangawhai local who is an enthusiastic supporter of these heritage equestrian sports. Originally hailing from Saskatchewan, Canada’s western prairie province, Steve began riding in the 1970s and has never looked back. He says that building lifelong skills and forming a bond between horse and rider is just part of the fun. The community, comradeship and competition of rodeo sports have kept him coming back year after year, and have shaped his way of life. “The ultimate goal is complete communication between you and the horse,” he says. “Really, you’re going from being a person on two legs to being a partnership with four. Finding the right horse is a matter of personality, just like working with another person. Then it’s a learning process. Some people spend a lifetime, like I have, trying to get better and improve.” The desire to have riding space in a varied environment is a big drawcard when it comes to Mangawhai. Steve operated a factory in Kaiwaka for a time, when he was able to get a feel for the special conditions of Kaipara’s east coast. Many people in this region are involved with horses in one way or another, from showjumping to racing, leisure riding to polocrosse. Steve reckons they’ve seen the same thing in the land as he has. “Mangawhai is a great place, and unique in New Zealand in that it has wide-open riding country, with everything

It’s not surprising that there’s a strong riding community.” With a home here and ample grazing for his own horses, thanks to co-operative lifestyle block owners, Steve will be off following the rodeo and riding circuit after Christmas, returning in 2020 to help establish a new equestrian sports series that’s focussed on the skills and contests of the western tradition. It’s a growing trend across the world, from Norway to Mexico, Australia to Paraguay. One that has a natural home here in the Kaipara, with club meets regularly bringing riders together in Paparoa.

A community with spirit
GAS Maungaturoto Service Station and Workshop

Leaving the Brynderwyn turn-off to head westwards into the Kaipara, Maungaturoto is the next town to greet the traveller, with its self-styled designation as ‘the heart of the Kaipara’. Well, if an excellent community spirit defines that classification, Maungaturoto has it in spades. The town is home to a Fonterra dairy processing factory and a number of successful businesses. In the main Hurndall Street are a medical centre, library and vet centre flanked by several retail outlets and eateries, with a supermarket and off-street car park. Building and farming supplies are major businesses catering to a wide farming catchment. Riverview Rest Home Retirement Village is a major feature of the town, and it is here that a massive community effort justified that ‘heart of the Kaipara’ claim. For there is now under construction a 14-bed dementia unit, which will provide for the wider district at the cost of $3.6 million, a large proportion of which has been raised locally in a series of innovative endeavours. A leading fundraiser identity in town is Albie Paton, who runs a donated goods emporium dubbed The Den, in a former scouts hall, who is nearing his target of $100,000 towards the cost of the unit. There have been town breakfasts that have raised thousands of dollars,
with catering invariably carried out by the Rapid Relief Team, a gathering of Brethren residents formed to assist in any local emergency event. As chair of the local community trust, Craig Fergus explains: “of course, further fundraising can only enhance the project. A place called home “It’s a bit of old school charm and a mile from the hurly-burly of the city,” says Maungaturoto-based writer, director and illustrator Dave Gunson, who has just put down his paintbrush in the home he shares with partner Anna. “We found this old home, and I am into history, so have been tracing its past owners and background. We are doing it up gradually, or rather taking it back, rather than modernising — restoring it back to its heydays I guess.” Dave admits to a great interest in local history and has been indulging in his pastime since moving to Kaipara six months ago from Auckland’s North Shore. “We were looking for a place to settle down in and call home,” he said. “We had been up here to visit ‘in-laws’ and began exploring and looking around and that soon led to the real estate notices. Initially, we looked at Kaiwaka, and then Maungaturoto started ticking boxes, and we found our ideal place.” With all the amenities of bigger towns and cities, but without the rush, the

The pleasure of treasures u by Andy Bryenton
One of the best things about being out on the road, visiting new towns, is the ability to indulge in a little bit of personal vice. It’s one, which many of us share, after all, so it’s not at all embarrassing to admit that I love a good second-hand shop. Just as sweet as discovering a proper old-fashioned cafe with home-made baking, finding a real Kiwi second-hand store in a rural town is a proper little experience. The handbrake has been deployed on many occasions when a sign by the roadside has indicated that there are treasures to be browsed through. These places run the field from honest to goodness antiques that speak of local history, through to novelty ‘cool kitsch’ and retro toys from our childhoods, old records that you’d never find on Amazon, and books, games, clothes — the list is endless. One of the best of these little gems locally is in Maungaturoto, where Nicole and her team have packed a bright and cheerfully painted green building full of items of interest. It’s pretty much impossible to be more specific because
on consecutive visits there this writer has been tempted by a glass and chrome dining table from the 70s, power tools, motor racing flags, handwoven rugs, hats, iron cookware and some very 1980s music. The exploration is half the fun, as it should be with this kind of experience. To make things even better, the powers that operate Maungaturoto Second Hand have graced the store with the facilities to make proper espresso coffee as well. That means a quick break to enjoy one of the delights of a road trip holiday can also serve as a pick-me-up before it’s time to try and fit all that loot into the back of the car. There’s another great reason to come and browse as well. Museums may offer an educational window on the past, and art galleries

life that quite often sparks nostalgia and recognition. With the added bonus that you can pick up anything you fancy and take it home.
Summer is the time for sharing what’s best about our Kaipara District — miles of pristine beaches facing oceans, lakes or harbours, great fresh local food, a kind word with a local who may share a secret fishing spot or favourite hidden swimming hole. From Christmas for a few weeks it seems the population of Kaipara District nearly doubles with extra visitors joining us and coming here to stretch out; it follows that all our systems get stretched. Drinking water, waste water, rubbish collection — all these Council services will soon be working at peak rate for this holiday time of year. Being co-operative and patient are key to a stress-free summer in Mangawhai. Mangawhai summer plans are in place for the busiest period of the year for Kaipara’s busiest place. There’s a trial of a one-way traffic management system for the Wood Street shops area, and there’s extra summer parking opened up on the grass at the Heads Beach carpark. Council is also putting on a FREE bus to connect Mangawhai Village through to the Heads surf beach, and I’m looking forward to using that myself with the family soon. The Shops to Heads bus will be one to take up this summer and help ease road congestion around popular spots.
relocated, and that Northland is in the frame for the future port. As chair of the Northland Mayoral Forum I’m speaking on this subject for the civic leaders of the region. For Kaipara District, already the fastest-growing district in the North Island, this port move would be expected to turbo-charge what’s already the most popular place around. The new Kaipara Horizons Committee at KDC will be focusing on this in the new year, and there’s lots of good stuff to share ahead. Speaking of good stuff, I hope your Christmas and New Year are filled with lots of other good stuff, relaxing days and happy times. I look forward to a great 2020 year of vision ahead for Kaipara, and to sharing with you more good times in the mighty Kaipara. There’s no place like it, this place we call home. Maybe that’s why so many others want to join us? Welcome, everyone. Nau mai, haere mai, piki mai. Come on in, the water’s fine. Merry Christmas from all of us at Council, Meri Kirihimete,

Spot-on timing for heavy rain storms in the last week have lifted spirits of farmers and food growers across the District. That’s a nice Christmas bonus, following excellent establishment of kumara, maize and forage crops, as well as filling aquifers and rivers across the District. Summer rain also tops up everyone’s water tanks, so it pays to keep the gutterings clean at this time of year so none of the good stuff goes to waste. Another Christmas bonus is the recent decision by Government that the industrial functions of the port of Auckland will be

You will find a brand new medical centre, housed with the town library in a renovated council building, set in parklike surroundings. Next is a collection of retail outlets, cafes and restaurants, before you arrive at the iconic Paparoa Store. Little changed in style from its construction more than a century ago, but of course, stocked with 21st-century food and beverages. There is also plenty happening during summer. The action is in the foreshore of the Pahi Beach Holiday Park administered by a local residents’ committee, with camp fees returned in constantly upgraded facilities. Adjacent is the cemetery and the Coates Memorial Church, built in honour of New Zealand’s native-born prime minister and war hero, Joseph Gordon Coates., Tinopai Some 20 minutes further down the long peninsula is Tinopai, a seaside
enclave, with a modest permanent population, but a thriving primary school catering for a large rural catchment. The original settlement was called Te Komiti, which was a regular stopping point for Maori travellers on the Kaipara. A large raupo church, capable of holding several hundred people, was built here under missionary auspices in 1852 — of course, now long demolished. The town is also home to emergency services and the North Kaipara Coastguard and patrol boat, to assist in any emergency at sea.

Space for art and music u by Andy Bryenton
Lynn Walters first came to Tinopai, on the Kaipara Harbour, as a tourist, behind the wheel of a mobile camper. Now the musician, songwriter, artist and appreciator of the ‘good life’ is a permanent resident in the seaside settlement. She says there is no way she’d ever go back to the big city. “It came down to a question that seems like an easy decision,” she says, “instead of living by the motorway, why not live by the water?” It’s a quip about her family’s old home in Massey, West Auckland, but there’s no second-guessing the move to a slower pace of life. “There are no shops at all here, no traffic; it’s quiet and peaceful. There’s lots of room for art and music — you could call it lots of ‘headroom’. It’s quite big and overwhelming in the city.” Both art and music feature as major imperatives for Lynn, who has enjoyed a life long career in creativity. A multiinstrumentalist, she played with the band Bad Habits and was a regular entertainer at Balmoral landmark the Cask and Cleaver. It’s a more recent artistic endeavour, which has taken flight in Tinopai. Here, Lynn is the local teacher and number one proponent of decoupage. This form of artwork is all about collisions between images and objects. The French style of inlaying or overlayering pictures onto everything from furniture to glass to musical

instruments came from the baroque period. It was influenced by the ornate gold leaf and paper inlay under lacquer that came out of China and Japan. Lynn has taken the artform to some interesting new places, combining it with her love of music to produce ‘illustrated’ instruments, which are both beautiful and functional. A personal favourite is a ukulele covered in ornate words and flowers, gold and vintage typesetting. Lynn has begun teaching decoupage, not just as a practical way to beautify the everyday, but as a form of reflection and calm mindfulness.
“Music and art are forms of meditation,” she says. “It certainly helps that we have a beautiful spot overlooking the ocean where people can work on their art amid nature.” Classes can last all day or extend through to weekend workshops, and Lynn also has a variety of unique gifts and items for sale via her Facebook pace, Decoupage Diva. Once a tourist, now a committed convert to Tinopai’s leisurely pace of life, this is one creative person who is certain she’s made the right move.

Ruawai
The heartland of kumara country u by Andy Bryenton
As you descend from the hills of Matakohe in the east or travel down past the rocky spur of Tokatoka in the west, you’ll reach a vast and fertile plain, criss-crossed with canals and ditches, and almost iridescent green with fertile growth. This is the land that surrounds Ruawai, kumara basket of the world and a place literally dug back up from the seabed one shovelful of soil at a time. Modern Ruawai owes a lot to the early settlers hired by the Raupo Drainage Board back at the turn of the last century. These hard-working men, many of them of Dalmatian descent, came armed with barrows and shovels to dig stopbanks and ditches, turning what was known as the Raupo Swamp into some of the most fertile lands in the country. Centuries of rich Northern Wairoa mud combined with the minerals left behind in aeons past when landmarks like Tokatoka and Maungaraho were volcanoes to produce the ideal conditions for growing kumara; not to mention prize-winning cattle. Kumara grown here feed not just New Zealand, but are exported to the world. As you drive across these plains, imagine them inundated by water twice a day, dotted with shaggy cabbage tree islands and impassable to vehicles. That was the old reality. Now, farming dominates, as evidenced by the

landmark Kaipara Kumara building with its well-known mascots perched on the roof. The former residents of Big Fresh supermarkets, the collection of cartoon fruit and vegetables swelled this year with the purchase of even more Kiwiana icons, soon to be installed. You can stop for a picture, and learn all about the history of this unique town from the band rotunda in the park, filled with historical images and stories. Walk the stopbank and get a great view of where the river meets the harbour. There’s
good fishing out there, and this is a popular launch spot for boaties. Ruawai also boasts some great little eateries and places to stop and refuel. Once you have, you may want to stop just to the north of town at Tokatoka itself. A dramatic volcanic core eroded away to a steep cone. It’s possible to scale the entire prominence, with steps and a trail right to the top, for the best view of the riverlands and our own local ‘upside down Atlantis’, the land won back from the sea.

DARGAVILLE
Plans for a bright future With the Kaipara District now the second-fastest-growing region in the nation, plans are underway to ensure that towns like Dargaville not only retain their unique character as the population increases but that this part of New Zealand has the infrastructure to support all of those who choose to live there. One of the groups brought about to have oversight for future change is the Dargaville Community Development Board, who is already hard at work supporting worthy projects and making plans for the future. Many local events, such as the annual Dargaville Wearable Arts, are supported by the DCDB. Beyond their promotion of arts and culture, the group is also focussed on infrastructural growth initiatives, such as developing future accommodation and care for an ageing population. This demographic shift is changing the face of Dargaville already. Two large groups have focussed on the town as a great place to live — young families seeking affordable housing and a more rural, friendly environment to raise their children and older citizens who wish to retire away from the city. These are by no means the only groups in society who are making the positive move to the Kaipara. However, their specific needs are being planned for today to meet the challenges of tomorrow. One of the

definitive advantages Dargaville already boasts is a central medical hub, and its preservation and improvement (alongside other public health initiatives) are the domain of the Kaipara Community Health Trust. Our schools boast active parent and teacher networks and boards of trustees, while several tertiary courses are also available right here through Northtec. One of the biggest changes of the near future is rolling out already, with faster, more reliable broadband connecting Dargaville to the world at speeds and bandwidths never before experienced. From investments in infrastructure and roading to new sporting facilities and upgrades, central government’s regional development fund initiative to re-establish harbour trade and tourism by water, and the work of numerous local groups and societies working in fields as disparate as arts and culture, heritage and retirement living, Dargaville looks ahead to a future as one of the most popular lifestyle locations in the north.

It’s an unusual take on a classic local story. He was from Whangarei, she from West Auckland. He was into equestrian sports; she represented New Zealand at the Commonwealth Games as a cross country cyclist. They shared a love of the outdoors and had the business acumen and vision to see a vital niche. Time To was born in Mangawhai, initially operating from their home, as well as from a custom-converted gold and black Mercedes ambulance. “We ran the business from home over there, and it’s a lovely place,” says Des. “However, there were no commercial buildings for us to grow into a branch out. We’d invested in a building in Dargaville, so we were tempted by the opportunity.” That building once housed the printing presses of the local newspaper; now it’s a showroom and workshop filled with bikes, e-bikes and equipment. “It’s great here,” he continues. “Mangawhai was getting a bit too busy, a bit too cosmopolitan, which is fine if you like that — but Dargaville is a good fit. The people here are real, and they also realise that getting local is a necessity.”

Northpower embarks on off-grid power trial
Award for Excellence in Technology
Northpower is teaming up with Hubands Energy and the Friends of MatakoheLimestone Island Society to install an off-grid power solution to the Ranger’s house on the Island.
Congratulations to Troy Panapa-Thurlby, Taz Snelling and Irimana van der Mei of MUDTech (pictured with Young Enterprise Scheme CEO Terry Shubkin) for winning the Northpower Award for Excellence in Technology.
The $51,000 project will replace the existing small-scale solar PV/battery system – which is supported by a petrol generator – and it could be completed before Christmas! Northpower Network General Manager Josie Boyd says the project is the perfect opportunity for the company to test and learn about off grid technology.
Troy, Taz and Irimana (a combined team from Kaitaia College and Kaitaia Abundant Life School who have been doing YES through Papa Taiao) have built an underwater remotely operated vehicle to help with inspections of boats for the identification and control of marine pests that may have attached themselves to the hull below the water line.
“It enables Northpower to gain technical experience with an off-grid system using the latest technology as these systems are becoming more viable as alternative for uneconomic parts of the distribution network,” says Mrs Boyd. “It also gives us the chance to work alongside Friends of Matakohe-Limestone Island Society and support their ongoing environmental activities on this historic island, while also gaining an understanding of consumer interactions with off-grid solutions.” Mrs Boyd says supporting the development of alternative electricity solutions could help minimise costs to consumers in the long term.
There is significant interest from a number of parties – the Northland Regional Council included - as it could remove the need for specialist divers to inspect boats and/or expensive lifting of boats for inspection.
Northpower consumers to receive over $10m Most Northpower consumers are receiving a $220 (including GST) discount on their November or December electricity bills, an increase from the $120 distribution paid last year. That’s because we are giving you a Northpower Pricing Discount – thanks to Northpower and the Northpower Trust. You will see a credit on your November or December electricity bill. Those who don’t receive $220 (including GST) will receive $63 (including GST) – you can learn more here https://northpower.com/electricity/pricing

The king of horse sports hosted here u by Andy Bryenton
This summer, the picturesque countryside of the Pouto peninsula, just south of Dargaville, will echo with the rumble of hooves and the cries of athletes competing in a sport that can trace its origins back to the steppes of Afghanistan and Mongolia. Mick and Jill Blackwood are proud to host New Zealand’s national junior and intermediate champs of polocrosse. “These young people, given their skills, will one day be out Kiwi reps,” says Mick, “Whole families are into it. Kids and grandkids, some have three generations in the sport. It’s not the kind of thing you ever give up once you’ve tried it!” Polocrosse evolved out of polo, which was indeed spawned from the fierce rivalry between Afghan cavalrymen, seeking to prove their horse-handling prowess. Now played with six-a-side, three from each team active at once, the sport was modified by equally brash and brave Aussie musterers in the 1930s. A racket replaces the old polo mallet, adding the ability to bounce, flick, pass and scoop the ball for faster action. “It’s very much about the partnership between horse and rider. This game originated with farmers and their horses, but you need a horse that’s got heart and resilience, as well as intelligence. It’s a fast-paced sport, but that bond is both on and off the field.” Jill adds; “It’s a really good thing for kids to learn, taking care of your fitness and the wellbeing of your horse, staying in shape, training together, learning skills that you can use on the field and in life.” More than 200 people will converge on the Blackwood’s farm this January, camping out for staying with their horses in converted trucks. DARGAVILLE
Scout’s Honour u by Andy Bryenton
One of the oldest and most respected groups offering adventurous, outdoor experiences and education to young New Zealanders, the Scouts have been part of growing up in the outdoors for thousands of New Zealand kids. Local Scout Thomas Davidson says that growing up here in the west Kaipara has provided him with the opportunities needed to achieve the highest award the organisation offers. The Chief Scout’s Award is a step above the many specific badges, which many of us will remember earning for such skills as bushcraft, fire safety, knot tying or swimming skills. As the Chief Scout of New Zealand is no less a personage than the Governor-General, it’s a significant achievement. Thomas, who has grown up with Scouting, starting as a Kea at age five, says he has gained more than just a commemorative badge through his involvement with the group. They’ve enabled him to take full appreciation of the natural environment here where he lives. “Some friends at school and I wanted to do some fun things that weren’t school. As a Kea Scout, when I was five and a half, we played heaps of games that I now realise taught me loads of stuff about team building and general knowledge. “Earning different badges meant I learnt a variety of skills, which I wouldn’t have done at home or school,” he says.
Special thanks go out to his scout leaders, mates and parents; those who make Scouting in Dargaville a fun and vibrant club to join. “My patrol members got dragged to come with me on caving expeditions, cycle trails, biking and bush hikes. The scout leaders would encourage me and offer me different experiences. The Scout programme has a lot of variety — they listen to us scouts. We get to choose what activities to do, and the leaders are there to make sure we stay safe,” says Thomas. That endless variety of outdoor adventures is made possible by close proximity to nature as well as the hard work of Scouting volunteers. “We are blessed to be close to Kai Iwi Lakes, which is great to camp at. Every year there is a regatta with the Sea Scouts competing in sail races and seamanship. Being Land Scouts, we always learn a lot from them and like to improve on our pioneering skills.” At a ceremony where
p Keas, Cubs and Scouts enjoy the opportunities to explore and learn in the outdoors, from a home base in Dargaville staffed by dedicated parents and leaders
the Chief Scout’s Award was presented by Kaipara’s deputy mayor Anna Curnow, Mr Brian Burnett, Life Member of NZ Scouting congratulated Thomas on his dedication to learning and self-
improvement. At the same time, the young outdoorsman received the Duke of Edinburgh’s Bronze Award, another international environmental accolade that few achieve.

Make it your dream home Design looks to a future past The year 2020. The far future. Well, not anymore; that date is coming towards us faster than the rocket trains Popular Mechanics once predicted we’d all be commuting on. What does this mean for design in the new decade? Surprisingly, it’s not the austere, tech-heavy home of tomorrow predicted by everything from Blade Runner to the Jetsons. While the aesthetics of that classic film have indeed informed Elon Musk’s latest pickup truck design, the trend for 2020 in interiors is more organic and comfortable. Technology, now ubiquitous, is as likely to be hidden as centralised and celebrated. The trend for living spaces in 2020, in fact, offers a few tongue-in-cheek ‘easter eggs’ referring to how we thought we’d live in the 21st century, while otherwise embracing more leather, velvet, suede and wool than chrome, glass and plastic. Texture is the new colour this year. The feature wall is all fine and good, but there’s a counter-argument in design to spaces, which appear flat and uninviting, giving the impression of an unlived-
in gallery. One example of this is the sudden rise of boucle, from a catwalk fixture in fashion to a trend in home design. From the runway, too, we’ve seen the reintroduction of stitched and appliqued patterns, breaking up the tritone colour wheel approach to decor. While a riot of clashing shades is still to be avoided, the era of battleship grey, beige and stark white seems to be coming to a close, with terracotta, peach, pale blue and a favourite combo, cream white and mint green pastel, coming to the fore in many collections. There’s an emerging trend to update the ‘shabby chic’ aesthetic, with its repurposed baroque accents, with retro-futurist notes. Repurposed tin

signs, display cases, auto parts and appliances from the forward-looking, chrome-and-fins 50s are the new hot ticket, evoking the fact that designers in those days imagined 2020 replete with ‘Saturn’s rings’ around everything, and likely hovering robots to mix our martinis too. The clever use of space is also a popular trend, with multi-use rooms and concealed technology serving as
the 2020s equivalent of the secret door behind a bookcase in a Victorian mansion. Think pop-out desks, beds which disappear into the ceiling, flat screens inset behind artworks and storage space everywhere you wouldn’t expect it. Most of all, the second fifth of the century is all about self-expression and making something new out of something old. Let the creativity commence!

Make it your dream home Trust and reputation One of the greatest and most fulfilling projects you can undertake, both creatively and financially, is in renovating a home. It’s a national obsession, as evidenced by the wealth of television shows and internet blogs about just this subject. Of course, when done right, a good renovation allows you to turn a place you fell in love with at the open home into the perfect expression of your personality as well as a haven away from the stress of the outside world or a workplace to pursue hobbies and ambitions. The problem is that to achieve that dream; it’s invariably necessary to share the load and to turn some responsibility over to professionals who know how to perform those difficult and sometimes even potentially dangerous tasks such as shifting load-bearing walls, rewiring switchboards, plumbing in en suites and fitting gas for cookers and water heaters. Pick the wrong team, and, as innumerable television build-offs have shown us, one of two things happens. You have to compromise your vision or blow your schedule and budget to pieces. There’s good news, however, for those seeking to snap up a bargain in the Kaipara housing market and transform it to meet their ideal of either a family home or a retirement hideaway.
As a small town in a region full of small towns, we are proud to have a complement of tradespeople who live and work on their reputations. Some of the firms in the Kaipara are second or third generation operations. One Dargaville flooring company, for example, has been in the trade since before the second world war. Bosses of today are often the apprentices of the past. Some homes here have been remodelled by successive generations of builders, who have access to dad and grandad’s plans. That means that they have continued to thrive in a small-town environment, where bad publicity could make business disappear. Reputation means a lot in rural New Zealand, so there’s no room for poor workmanship. Everyone knows everyone, and word of

mouth recommendations are worth a lot to our local electricians, plumbers, builders and other craftspeople. Best of all, these days you get the best of both. With Auckland and its international suppliers just a short courier van trip away, any new style, latest fixture or modern fitting is at the disposal of your local tradies. With entries now open for the 2020 Dargaville Wearable Arts, event organisers have been busy working behind the scenes to ensure a fantastic backdrop for contestants. In 2019, Dr Maggie Buxton’s AwhiWorld company lavished audiovisual magic on the wearable arts stage and surrounds. Reimagining the interior space and even painting Dargaville’s old civic chambers with light and images. There are suitably ambitious plans to make 2020 an even more stunning spectacle. One hallmark by which the success of the event can be measured is the enthusiasm with which previous contenders have signed up to create something new for 2020. While this is great news for fans of the wearable arts genre, who will be treated to a visual feast by these veterans, it also means that places for newcomers are filling fast. The message is clear; the time to register interest is now. Allowing plenty of time to work with the supportive wearable arts production team to ensure the very best presentation.

Volunteers show community spirit u by Andy Bryenton
On Tuesday, December 10, people from many jobs and walks of life around the town of Dargaville finished work and gathered at the town’s fire station to welcome the newest member of the team. “It’s the volunteers who are the backbone of our brigade. We couldn’t do this without them. In most of rural New Zealand, and here specifically, we rely on members of the public stepping up, completing the training, answering the call.” That’s the message echoed by senior firefighters across the Kaipara, from Dargaville to Mangawhai, who opened a brand new station this year. Locally, the comradeship and civic pride of the fire brigade is apparent in the numbers coming through to join, take up the yellow jacket, and learn the skills needed to save lives. Two such young people are Owen Cleary and Sateke Tuanaki, who are right now training in Mount Wellington, Auckland, at Fire and Emergency New Zealand’s specialist facility. Young cadets, as yet too junior to follow in Owen and Sateke’s boot-steps, come and train at simulations alongside the fully-fledged firefighters to learn the basics and prepare for their own graduation in years to come. There are plenty of others who have moved to Dargaville from elsewhere who choose to be counted among the town’s first responders. Colin Sloan,

Dargaville’s new fire engine was formally blessed at the Tuesday evening ceremony and is now ready to head out when it’s needed, carrying a crew of six, along with equipment such as the ‘jaws of life’, a defibrillator, first aid equipment, oxygen bottles, and the obligatory metres of high-volume hosepipe.

DARGAVILLE
Charting a future course u by Andy Bryenton
With a background in economic development and a passion for town management, encouraging community growth and promoting the unique points of civic centres, Wendy Dunn found herself in demand all across the greater Auckland area. From Manurewa to Howick, to training others in her skill set across in Northcote, to attending meetings in the central suburbs, the professional who today heads up the Dargaville Community Development Board as chief executive found entire days could go by stuck in the city’s infamous traffic. It was an exasperating situation for a person who “can’t abide doing nothing when there is so much to achieve.” Time at the traffic lights was time away from planning events and promotions, and coming up with ways to help various groups come together for their mutual benefit. Wendy already had a strong connection to the west Kaipara when the choice to move here came to the forefront of the conversation. Her mother was born at Te Kopuru Hospital, and her partner hailed from this part of the world too. So it was natural that they had spent the past year or two exploring the countryside on weekends, enjoying the outdoors, and the contrast from the city. “This town is very pretty. It has a massive potential to grow and develop,”
she says, speaking from the new premises of the Dargaville Community Development Board, on Victoria Street in the centre of town. “We need to help build infrastructure to support that growth, and a big part of that is facilitating existing groups, interests and businesses to get together, join their strengths. “We want to help people make connections.” While working in Pukekohe, where she established several initiatives, such as a school holiday programme for kids, Wendy was offered the opportunity to move north and make Dargaville her permanent home, bringing a wealth of skills along with her. Those skills have added to the work of the DCDB in facilitating a wealth of events for the coming year, including but not limited to a role in this summer’s Wai Worri Country Muster, the Northland Field Days, Centenary celebrations for Northland Rugby, hosting the BDO bike race as it comes to town, the brand new Dargaville River Festival (concurrent with the Northern Wairoa Boating Club’s regatta) and many more.

Tailored legal SoluTionS limiTed
COMPANY PROFILE Tailored Legal Solutions is a boutique law firm based in Dargaville which specialises in litigation, business support & strategy (including employment) and estate planning. When asked why she established and based her specialist legal practice in Dargaville, Barrister & Solicitor Emma Smith answers quite simply “because it’s home”. More practically, Emma says “modern business practices mean our business is conducted via email, internet and phone to such a significant degree that being a specialist practice no longer requires you to be based in Queen Street in Auckland. I travel as and when I need to. The rest of the time we get the work done right here — we avoid the rush hour and costs that go with a “city-based ego”. Emma has been working with clients in Northland for 9 years following her return from the UK. After establishing Tailored Legal Solutions in January 2015 her growing reputation now sees Emma working regularly with clients throughout New Zealand. Regularly appearing in the High Court, Emma has built her business on a solution-based philosophy: “Sometimes winning the argument is not always the best outcome. Often some lateral thinking finds a much better outcome much earlier in the process.” Also working with her clients on their business and estate planning & strategies, Emma encourages clients to prepare for the “red-flag” moments: “Time spent discussing and preparing for the hard issues can often seem difficult but it is healthier and cheaper than leaving matters to be litigated at a later date.” When asked about the firm’s growth and ongoing success Emma suggested that we hear from some of the clients she has worked with in the past 12 months: “Having found myself in the position of needing an exceptionally smart lawyer, I read an article introducing Emma Smith. I am involved in a lengthy property dispute. At every step Emma has shown her warmth as a human being and very quick, incisive mind as a barrister and solicitor. Emma has always been direct as to the possibilities and unshakable to any threats posed. All my interactions with Emma’s law firm Tailored Legal Solutions have been positive and supportive of my situation. Thank you Emma for being an exceptional person and lawyer… I can’t tell you how dark some of these days have been. Your skill and support have kept me closer to the light… sincerest regards” AB, Property Litigation Client, Fielding “Emma Smith is not your “typical lawyer”; short in stature, drives a ute, practises out of Dargaville and gives hugs. She’s also practical to a tee, highly professional, with a wealth of knowledge and experience. Emma has worked with us for the last three years on both complex and high-profile cases. Emma and her team always go over and above for us with support and service to make sure that we get the best possible outcome.
What more can we say? We would recommend Emma and her team in a heartbeat.” Business Owners, Commercial Litigation Clients, Whangarei It gives me great personal pleasure to write this testimonial for Emma because when I first heard of her, I thought she and her deeds must in fact be a myth. I had spent the previous eight years looking for a replacement for my barrister who had died — a Dr of Laws and a delightful humble brilliant man, a hard act to follow. After 13 false starts with other barristers all claiming to be able to take on a banking Corporate, I was starting to despair. Then I heard of this barrister from Dargaville who had taken on the case in the High Court, of a small local farmer who had been appallingly treated by the same bank. The opposition found themselves underprepared in the face of a superb education, comprehensive coalface experience, and knowledge of the law. All this backed up by Facts, Ethics, Integrity and Accountability with real skin in the game. Emma’s business model and commitment are unique in NZ. Emma also has the delightful gift of the vernacular that would leave an East Coast drover’s dog in no doubt of her opinion and the next minute make an opposition barrister wish they had stuck to their Uni holiday job.” Retired Farmer, Banking Litigation Client, Hawke’s Bay “As a company engaged in business across the country, access to timely, accurate and relevant legal advice is something which provides us with more than just peace of mind. As we operate from Dargaville we are extremely fortunate that we have available a local expert that offers the accessibility and availability for a one on one service. We know that Tailored Legal Solutions is there to put all of Emma’s knowledge and experience, combined with her common sense approach, at our disposal whenever it may be required.” Business Owner, Commercial Clients, Dargaville I was a Dairy farmer affected by the SWAP loans sold by a bank: foreclosed on and the farm sold. After the Commerce Commission investigation into the banks misselling of SWAPS I submitted my own proceedings in the High Court. After receiving direction from the Court that the Company had to be represented by a Lawyer I approached Emma. Also from a farming background she can relate to you practically and formally. I was impressed with her solutions and proposed direction for my case. Emma’s experience in the UK shone through in her professional knowledge of, and ability in, the corporate world. Her preparation and presentation in court is thorough and impressive. The Bank’s Lawyers were not going to pull the wool over her eyes. We both enjoyed the challenge of taking on the big guys. I’m delighted to say after going to mediation a settlement was reached. Dairy Farmer, Banking Litigation Client, Dargaville

DARGAVILLE
The Kauri Coast’s gateway With a vibrant and colourful past as the ‘wild west’ of colonialera New Zealand, the Dargaville of the present-day sits at the crossroads of history and the future, just as it sits at the crossroads between the river, land and sea. Here, where two major highways cross, you’ll find a town that’s growing and changing as it becomes the ‘best known little secret’ north of Auckland. In the past, people came here to work in the forests and gumfields. Now, the allure is of a more relaxed lifestyle, with multiple examples of the great outdoors right on the doorstep and amenities in easy reach as well. Those leaving the big city, whether it’s to start a family with the help of affordable housing prices, or to retire amidst nature in a small friendly community, contribute to the Kaipara’s recent growth rate of over 20 per cent. They have plenty of reasons to make that choice. Modern Dargaville is more than a retail hub or a town with its purposebuilt hospital; more even than the sum of its restaurants, schools, parks and market days. From the museum on the hilltop holding a fascinating array of taonga from both the pre-European, maritime and colonial past, through to recent additions such as public pools and
a thriving cinema, this is a town with a genuine sense of community. It’s something at once indefinable and incredibly compelling, and something mentioned by nearly every person who has come here to make Dargaville their home. That’s not to say that the nearby environment doesn’t have its allure as well. The vast, wild expanse of the Ripiro Coast with its world-class fishing is minutes away. It’s not much further to enjoy hiking through mature kauri forests, hunting in the hill country, riding off-road bikes through the sandy hills or on the trails, or just taking in the scenery. Stop by to refuel with a meal at one of the town’s surprising number of unique cafes and restaurants, from Thai cuisine through to Indian, fresh fish and chips in the old-fashioned style, hearty steaks and ribs at the local tavern or entirely plant-based, dairy and glutenfree options. While you’re here, take a closer look at the heritage of this fascinating area and the modern-day artwork, which this

Now a seasoned veteran when it comes to mechanical know-how, Wayne Goodall recalls his rural childhood vividly here in the Kaipara. Living on a farm, he was less interested in the livestock and the countryside than with what was under the hood of the family’s tractor, or what made their farm bikes tick. As he notes: “Once you’ve taken an engine apart, you really have to learn how to put it back together again.” This love of tinkering and experimenting served him well on a long sojourn away from the land of his birth, which saw Wayne delve into all aspects of internal combustion. For fun, and the thrill of competition, this meant donning the helmet and leathers of a motorcycle racer. Wayne’s a previous winner of the BEARS formula two national title, and he’s got a long history with the so-called ‘Ferrari of road bikes’, the superfast stable of Italian manufacturer Ducati. When it came to work, he spent more than a decade self-employed, taking care of the road fleet in the South Auckland town of Pukekohe. Home of the big racetrack, which is the natural habitat of the V8 supercars, it’s a town that has been surrounded by the city as time goes by. That rising tide was part of the reason Wayne decided to pack his tools and come back to the land of his birth. “It is a great place to live and work, close to the beach and far away from

the pace of the city, which has all but swallowed Pukekohe up,” he says. In the year since he opened his Car Mech Services garage and workshop, he’s met a whole lot of locals, built his business, reconnected with names familiar from his youth, and spent some time on his other passion, the restoration and construction of classic autos. Last year’s Maungaturoto hot rod show to benefit the local primary school saw him turn up in his immaculate ‘sleeper’ HQ series Holden. A perfect example of the car your dad may have
driven in the 1970s, except for the thoroughly modern engine tucked away under the hood. On most days, you’ll find Wayne helping keep our local cars, vans and utes safe and roadworthy from his central premises. In Dargaville, the master mechanic has a building of his own, and no landlord. Just plenty of space for his high-powered projects, and plenty more to hoist, inspect, repair and upgrade most anything that rolls or gets towed through the door.

Nature’s ultimate playground
Aeons before the first human footprints were placed in New Zealand sand; nature had already prepared a spectacular feast for the senses in the north-west. A combination of factors, including geology, climate, evolution and our nation’s geographic isolation created three absolute must-see features just north of Dargaville. The massive uplift of the continental plates created the Ripiro Coast, accessible at Baylys Beach and through many smaller gaps and gullies from Pouto Point to the great headland of Maunganui Bluff. An almost unbroken sweep of coastline that rivals the more northerly Ninety Mile Beach in stature; this is a rare driveable coast, able to be traversed with care at low tide by fourwheel-drive vehicles. It’s advised that this ‘road’ should be treated with caution and respect. Stick to the hard sand, and never drive between fishers and the water, for danger of breaking their lines. Approach groups of people on the beach at 30kph or slower and watch for kids and dogs. Police randomly patrol the beach, so drive safe, stay off the dunes, and enjoy the right to cruise this unique coastline respectfully and responsibly. Flipping a vehicle or getting stuck here could be very dangerous indeed. Kai Iwi Lakes formed when massive dunes were pushed up and inland by geological forces, forming deep, wide
freshwater lakes of astounding clarity. A popular tourist destination, these lakes are a great place to swim and are frequented by campers and boaties with small watercraft during the summer months. The ‘tent city’ that springs up here is known as the Kaipara’s unofficial fifth-biggest town during January when the lake-encircling bicycle trail and white sand beaches are a haven for tourists. There are two popular swimmable lakes, both situated in the 538-hectare Taharoa Domain, with bathroom facilities and even a food truck in residence during summer. The final drawcard of this amazing slice of New Zealand is the Waipoua Forest, an immense and primordial kauri forest spanning hills and valleys north of the lakes, with other stands of great stature nearby, such as Trounson Kauri Park. Here you’ll find a living example of how New Zealand appeared before the arrival of mankind, a habitat for kiwi and other native birds, and the home of the world-famous Tane Mahuta, largest

RETIREMENT & LIFESTYLE
Sunrise of the golden-agers u by Andy Bryenton
It’s an era of change for New Zealand demographically. Sixty is the new 40, and by the dawn of 2035, just 15 years away, more than 1.25 million of us will be celebrating our golden years. Already, the Kaipara District is seeing a shift in the kind of people who want to move here to live. Groups, as varied as our charitable clubs and societies, community organisations, local and central government, are rising to the challenges and opportunities this brings. There’s ample reason for older folks to consider the Kaipara as an option for retirement. Firstly, there are the sunshine hours, which in recent years have matched those of the famously clement Nelson region. A warmer winter and lots of outdoors time in summer make for a healthier lifestyle than ice, slush and snow. At the same time, there’s more to the choice than simple meteorology. Sunshine alone can’t account for a 20.6 per cent rise in population between census takings, and neither, despite its obvious natural beauty, can just the scenery we have on offer. As in most western nations, there’s an element of connectivity and proximity to people’s choices to live here. The countryside is beautiful, but the amenities of the city, with its centralised hubs of arts and culture, music, performance and centralised specialist
medical care, are a major drawcard too. As roading improves, with motorways forging ahead north of Auckland to bring our region closer, travel times diminish. Currently, it’s a one and a half to two-hour drive from the Kaipara to the harbour bridge. That’s less than some people’s commute in gridlocked traffic on a weekday morning. When the motorway slices through to Wellsford, it’ll be a clear shot from Kaiwaka, in the Kaipara, to downtown or the western route. Additionally, last week’s government report recommending moving the ports of Auckland to nearby Marsden Point means even more infrastructure linking our part of the world to the city is on its way. Then again, when it comes to many amenities, Kaipara towns are already well-stocked. Dargaville has its hospital, and three retirement homes or communities, two of which also provide medical care. Maungaturoto boasts a growing and expanding community-owned retirement home of its own. Paparoa is the site of a newly-developed retirement lifestyle residential subdivision — and more are certain to follow. For retirees seeking
the sunny good life out on a sustainable block, thoughts of true old age are still decades away. Moreover, the Kaipara is planning ahead to fulfil the needs of our
older citizens today, preparing for a role in providing excellent quality of life for those who are able to leave the nine to five world behind in their golden years.

Opportunities to learn and grow The Kaipara is a great example of the old saying ‘school ends when the last bell rings, but learning is for life’. This region provides not only top-quality educational facilities from preschool through to high school but also a wealth of programmes to further the love of learning no matter if you’re 10 or 110 years old. With so many people choosing to move to the Kaipara to raise a family, education is an important part of their decision-making process. There’s plenty of feedback that this doesn’t just mean access to playgroups, kindergartens, primary and secondary schools of good character. Parents
also expect the chance for their kids to grow up in and around nature, learning from the natural environment and the opportunities presented by country life. In a place where kindergartens raise their own chickens, schools have access to the ocean, harbour and forests as living biology classrooms, and there’s

the chance to ride horses, sail boats, mountain bike, hike and swim, education becomes more holistic than within the constraints of the city. The Kaipara’s schools are enriched with cultural and sporting programmes, which consistently produce awards and victories, and benefit from smaller class sizes for each teacher, in many cases, than their counterparts in more cosmopolitan areas. Extracurricular activities are as varied as the leisure pursuits we enjoy thanks to our surroundings. Additionally, there are plenty of ways for adults here to engage with educational opportunities. These might be formal, such as courses offered at the tertiary level by Northtec, or informal, such as joining a club or
society to learn anything from playing the ukulele to painting to working with wood or cooking exotic foods. Arts and crafts groups are also a great way to meet friends for those new to the area. With the internet bringing the knowledge of the world to our doorsteps via high-speed broadband, it’s possible to access expertise on any subject and find support from locals who can supply the tools and materials you need to experiment. That’s because another great example of life-long learning here is one of the prime reasons folks want to live in the Kaipara. Learning to plant and grow a garden, raise some chickens, make preserves and cultivate an orchard are all examples of education that has tangible results you can be proud of.

Services second to none
It is a simple fact of life that without good health, our quality of life goes downhill, but here in the Kaipara, we are fortunate to have top-quality professionals and associated services as part of a broadly integrated health system that is the equal of any. Across the district, there are medical centres in Mangawhai, Maungaturoto and Paparoa, operated by Coast to Coast Healthcare, with another medical centre attached to Dargaville Hospital. Where full surgical services are required, Whangarei Hospital is within easy reach of St John ambulance services. Moreover, in the case of emergencies, the Northland Emergency Services Trust (NEST) rescue helicopter has dedicated landing pads at Maungaturoto and Ruawai. There was a time when the government threatened the closure of Dargaville Hospital in favour of Whangarei-based health care — but Dargaville residents said a resounding no to that. The Save the Hospital committee was formed, soon Dargaville received a $1.9 million government grant, and it became a legal entity to be known as the Kaipara Community Health Trust (KCHT). The deed requires trustees to be the ‘guardian’ for health services, and act to enhance and retain quality health services. Dargaville medical services ensure the highest standard of equipment and technology are attained. The hospital is connected to all of Northland’s hospital facilities via a remote diagnosis and assistance tool called RITA —
the Rapid Information Telehealth Assessment system. Using a suite of optics in the acute assessment room and on a mobile unit, RITA allows doctors and surgeons from far-off hospitals view patient’s condition, make a diagnosis assisting with advice in emergency situations. A specialist in medicine is at the end of the interactive video line no matter what the illness or injury presented. Another technological advance is the Manage My Health app. CEO of Kaipara Community Health Trust, Debbie Evans, said at the time: “Dargaville Medical Centre is investing in technology apps. Keeping our rural community at the leading edge of healthcare and providing patients with access to their health records. So the patient can be informed and involved in their healthcare.” The app is available through the Dargaville Medical Centre. It enables users to stay in contact with health professionals, check test results and book appointments via their smartphone or computer. The app also shows personal medical history. It alerts a patient when an appointment is due, as well as allowing people to order a repeat on a prescription from their smartphones. With dedicated health professions

A big Kaipara adventure u by Liz Clark
Keeping the younger ones entertained during the long summer break can still be an ordeal. However, kids love finding and discovering new things. The Kaipara District offers a wealth of treasures to visit from parks and beaches to four outstanding museums. In Dargaville, Selwyn Park has a skate park and a community pool to cool off in during the heat of the day. On the banks of the Northern Wairoa River is the Taha Awa Riverside Gardens to take a stroll around and enjoy a peaceful setting away from the summer crowds. For older kids and parents, a recently opened heritage walk tells the story of Dargaville’s founding. Alternatively, head on up to Harding Park and visit the Kaipara Vintage Machinery Club and afterwards the Dargaville Museum. Finally, catch a movie at the Anzac Theatre at the close of the day. On the east coast is the Mangawhai Activity Zone. MAZ has a full skate bowl, an adventure playground complete with a pirate ship as well as places for family barbecues. There’s a cafe for parents to sit and relax in while the kids play. Nearby is the Mangawhai Museum. It’s not only full of memorabilia from local pioneering families but also displays of fun items from summer holidays collected during the last few decades. There are plenty of walking trails around to also check out including the Mangawhai Cliff Walk, plus the surf beach at the heads to walk on and collect shells.
p Kaipara District offers some big and sometimes very colourful adventures for both kids and parents alike
In between the two coasts, there are plenty of bushwalks to explore as well as the recently opened Ruawai Stopbank trail that follows the course of the Northern Wairoa River. A visit to The Kauri Museum is a must with plenty of displays, and sometimes even some of the models come to life!
Take a drive around the back roads following the shores of the Kaipara Harbour and discover secluded bays and piers where the kids can try fishing for sprats. Last, but not least make a record of your adventures as a keepsake of a great summer for future years.
