Inspiring the community by Ayla Miller
Dargaville and the wider Kaipara have a unique opportunity to revitalise their towns as vibrant places to live, work and visit according to internationally acclaimed town and community advocate, Peter Kenyon who over the last 30 years has worked with 1600 small rural towns in some 58 countries.

This follows a well-attended public meeting at the Lighthouse Function Centre organised by the Dargaville Business Forum, Kauri Coast Promotions Society and the Dargaville Community Development Board. Mr Kenyon spoke to the local community and those from
around the Kaipara district about other small towns which focussed on their positive assets and how he had worked with them to create vibrant, attractive and flourishing towns. “We are empowered by our strengths as a community. We will build a place
to live and work that engenders who we are,” he said. He stressed that ideas were the first step in vitalising a town, and getting people inspired and collaborating was one of the most important stages. continued on page 3 …

Dargaville Museum volunteers celebrated the end of another year with a visit to the Kaipara Vintage Machinery Club before joining Machinery Club members for a barbecue lunch at the Lighthouse Function Centre. The Museum and Vintage Machinery Club are largely run by volunteers and this lunch was to thank them for the hours they donated and a chance to mix and mingle before the Christmas holiday period.

The saw sculpture in Taha Awa Riverside Gardens, which pays tribute to Dargaville’s historical part in the Kauri milling industry, has been temporarily moved to storage whilst the old swamp kauri stump is replaced. “The stump was disintegrating and becoming a health and safety hazard so we have removed it whilst we organise a replacement,” says chairperson of the Riverside Gardens Trust, Lyn Trounson. The replacement will most likely be macrocarpa and the sculpture is expected to return early next year.

The Hospice Kaipara Memorial Service held at the Lighthouse Function Centre in Dargaville had 40 people attend with Barbara Toia opening with a powhiri and the group Take Five singing. “The service was run by Reverend Brendan Wilkinson and Sylvester Leef, and it was lovely in a brilliant setting overlooking the Kaipara as we released balloons with messages tied to them,” said Hospice Kaipara manager of Volunteer Services Jayne Walker. “We have had a lot of positive feedback. It is a great way for friends and family to come together to remember loved ones.”

Inspiring the community “We don’t want to leave this as a good ideas night. Now we have to come up with a strategy about how we set these plans into action. The majority of people are behind the things suggested, but the question is, how behind them are we?” He says the next stage will be working with groups to take the ideas to fruition. As the Kaipara moves to elect a new council next year, he says the area is in a unique position to choose leaders who will be a force for change. “Unlike many places I have worked with, Dargaville is not in trouble, it is just a community that wants to make its town the best it can be.” He also noted some very strong themes to come out of the discussions. “Retaining our youth came up many times, and there is a lot of interest in finding out how to get young people
to return and settle in the area. It is obvious locals really want Dargaville to be family friendly as well. “Now it is just about inviting people to join the groups and become involved in getting things happening,” said Mr Kenyon. “During the discussions people opened up about all the things they are passionate about and that’s what these meetings are all about. Getting people to think about what they would like to see happen.” Dargaville Business Forum chairperson Peter Boyd says he was very pleased with the feedback he received from the meeting. “I’ve learnt an incredible amount. People really seemed to enjoy the discussions and now it is just collaborating all the ideas, focussing on the key points and deciding where to go from there.”
“THANKS FOR A GREAT VISIT “A business forum breakfast meeting, a public meeting as well as meeting council staff and brainstorming with local community leaders, a hectic two days, but an amazing experience visiting your wonderful town of Dargaville, a town with so much going for it, that I am sure with the passion and enthusiasm I experienced here, it is a town with a very bright future.”
– PETER KENYON To those who could make it to hear Peter, thanks for a great turnout and participation. There is quite a lot of information to be collated and once this has been done, we will be in contact and start putting together some action plans.

Experiencing early settler days Passing the generational torch by Ann Morgan
by Andy Bryenton
The Kauri Museum at Matakohe are holding their annual Settlers Day on Sunday December 6 with a full programme of activities on offer for all ages.
It’s always good to see a local business retain the wealth of knowledge and skill which comes from years of service. Here in Dargaville, we have seen many of our main street companies passed from generation to generation, carrying on a fine tradition.
Trolley derby at The Kauri Museum
“Settlers Day out on Wheels is a celebration of community history. The day is a chance for descendants of the original pioneers to celebrate the past and for new settlers in the district to get acquainted with it,” said The Kauri Museum chief executive officer Lisa Tolich. “There will be heritage arts and crafts, gum polishing, rope and tool making, face painting, billy tea and damper, and the Skatescool from Tutukaka will be on hand to provide tuition and handy tips while free skating to music. There will be indoor and outdoor markets with stallholders offering everything from antiques and arts and crafts to local produce. “The day showcases the traditional pastimes of the Kaipara settlers and
children’s activities will be on offer throughout the day to ensure a family friendly day out and enjoyment for all ages. “The feature event is the DIY trolley derby and we are encouraging children to get involved by either registering their own creation or registering to trial one of the museum’s racing machines. There are prizes including most creative design, most innovative design and best dressed trolley. Race categories are split into age groups and design class such as traditional or contemporary. For more information on the day or requirements for entering the trolley derby go to www.kaurimuseum.com or pick up a FAQ sheet from the museum foyer.

Now our local Apparelmaster can be added to the roll-call, as long-term proprietors Ted and Joy Wedgwood hand over operations at the busy service centre to their daughter Janine Tregidga. The wife of respected local builder Grant, Janine has worked alongside her family and a great team for nearly 19 years at Apparelmaster, and now the time has come for her to take charge. Ted insists that he’s dedicated enough to be on call to help — but that his plan for retirement centres around two things both he and Joy can wholeheartedly agree on. Leisurely rounds of golf and travel around the scenic spots of the South Island are both on the cards. Competition challenges couple by Ayla Miller
Dargaville locals Nigel and Donna Randell battled illness, a typhoon, heat and humidity during their trip to the Philippines to compete in the National Amateur Bodybuilding Association’s International Universe Championships in November, returning with a trophy and a few stories. The couple have been bodybuilding for 14 years and qualified for the event when they came first in the New Zealand Nationals mixed pairs. Donna also came third in the International Figure and Nigel came second in the Master 40 plus. The pair travelled with 44 other New Zealand competitors before checking into a pre booked hotel in Cebu. When Nigel fell ill the day of pre registration, from a suspected waterborne illness, he had to be transported to hospital and it was decided he would have to pull out of the competition. Another New Zealand competitor, Tony Silverthorn from Auckland, offered to fill in for him so Donna could still compete in the pairs and with only 15 minutes of practising the routine together, they placed second. “It was an honour to represent New Zealand and Dargaville,” Donna said. She also placed second in her figure 40+ class. The luck stopped there when they encountered a typhoon on their flight from Manila to Kuala Lumpur. “We thought we were gone. We were holding each other’s hands so tight and the plane was absolutely silent. I started thinking about my family and what they would do if both of us were gone,” said Donna. Nigel said he could see the forked lightning outside his window and the pilot had to fly above the storm for 30 minutes before landing. Despite all the tribulations and the disappointment of Nigel being unable to compete, they said they made some long lasting friendships along the way. “There was a really good support system and we got to know all the New Zealanders well,” said Donna. Nigel says bodybuilding is addictive and they

Steampunk comes to town by Ayla Miller
Steampunkers from near and far gathered in Dargaville for their end of year garden party. The subgenre is described as science fiction meets fantasy and incorporates 19th century fashion and technology. Whangarei group, Kraken’s Lair and interested Dargaville residents, gathered in their ensembles to enjoy good manners and to show off their latest outfits, many of them hand made or collected from second-hand shops.
Organiser Mad’m Chat’y Gard’ner also known as Joan Brown said the day was ‘splendid’! “It was the first time Krakens Lair had been over to Dargaville for an event. The Commercial Hotel was a great setting and has such a historic feel. The afternoon’s events included croquet, tea duelling, a coconut shy, a mad hatter’s tea party and a variety of other garden games as well as plenty of photo opportunities.

Caring this Christmas by Ayla Miller
Kaipara District Council are calling for the community to spread some Christmas joy this season by donating presents or food to help families involved with Kaipara Abuse Prevention Services. The idea began when KDC staff member Missy Hokai wanted to be able to give back to children in need. “I used to give presents to other organisations but you never know where they are going and I wanted to support local children,” she said. “Our home is quite out of the ordinary, with a lot of odd angles to cover. It certainly isn’t a case of simply laying square pieces of carpet. Gerard and the team did a great job, making sure the flooring looked perfect throughout, with no areas where joins were apparent. We were very happy with the outcome.” K, Dargaville. “Would we recommend Lorraine and Gerrard to others? Most certainly! Their initial advice and patience while we were choosing the right carpet and vinyl for our new home was outstanding. Their workmanship proved to be excellent, and finished the house off beautifully. Having the right carpet and vinyl throughout has made all the difference!” G.S., Pahi CLOSED 23Dec –Open 11th Jan 2016

We can see as you rightly say, that it will give us many years of trusty service. Very happy with our purchase and our sincere thanks. We note the staff at PGG Wrightson's were very impressed with our incinerator.”

I have such a lot of stuff to burn currently – shelter belt trimmings, cuttings from a large hedge, rose prunings… I just love the way you can shut the lid, light it and walk away. So; a marvelous find. Thank goodness for the internet.”

Dining & ENTERTAINMENT Into the season of feasts by Andy Bryenton
Your local caterer
The festive season in the southern latitudes walks a fine line. On the one hand, we love a good barbecue outdoors in the sunshine. On the other, feasts and festivals from the old world impose a menu of tasty — but winter-orientated treats on us as the year draws to a close. Eateries around the Kaipara have been quick to incorporate the best of both worlds into their menus with hot ham and turkey meeting fresh salads and seafood as clubs, companies and families head out for early Christmas functions. Great news from the Aratapu Tavern — their succulent bacon-wrapped slow roasted turkey will continue to be carved and served through to the big day, taking Thanksgiving fare to a whole new crowd. Meanwhile there’s music in the air with Dolly Parton taking the stage in Dargaville this week — or at least the next best thing! The same talented team who recently brought a tribute to Fleetwood Mac to the Northern Wairoa Hotel are back, bringing the famous country songstress to a town which really appreciates a good show. New Year’s eve is also on the calendar with a red ‘x’, and we are spoiled for choice this year both on and around the big event. Bands such as Katchafire and Fat Freddy’s Drop are on their way (the Drop touring their stunning new album), and Jordan Luck of the Exponents is heading our way too. Vic Kena and the

Community spirit drives success by Andy Bryenton
Ford’s Blue Oval Roadshow has travelled the nation all through 2015, inviting Kiwis to drive one of the big brand’s range of vehicles and raise money for local causes. And while the response around the country was phenomenal, nowhere was it more so than here in Dargaville. Over 200 test drives were undertaken in vehicles as disparate as the Ranger ute and the sporty little Fiesta ST, raising $3,000 for the Northern Wairoa Football Club. Dargaville Ford’s Lindsay West is understandably pleased with the result, generated by a massive turn-out of Kaipara locals. The Football club hit the streets, filling lists of prospective test drivers, but it was a groundswell of public support from average Dargaville folk which made the two-day event shine. Volunteers traded in boots and footballs for tongs and a BBQ to add a sausage sizzle to the fun. The real stars of the roadshow may have been the big-hearted public, but the line-up of hot metal on display was a very close second.
From the rumbling note of the XR8 Falcon to the big practicality of the Transit Custom van, a parade of Ford vehicles could be seen coming and going from Dargaville’s Rugby Park on the 20th and 21st, showcasing a range which has encompassed many new models this year. The new Everest, Ranger, Focus, Fiesta and others impressed the crowds, no doubt convincing many to seriously consider a Ford as their next vehicle purchase. The next big arrival for the blue oval brand will be the 2016 Mustang — a much anticipated model sure to turn heads. In the meantime, both the Dargaville Ford team and the many volunteers and members of the Northern Wairoa Football Club would like to thank the people of the west Kaipara for making this event a huge success — and the best supported in New Zealand. The rewards of community involvement - the president of the Northern Wairoa Football Club receives a hefty cheque from Dargaville Ford.

surprises, though a commendable 306kW and 530Nm of torque won’t fail to deliver smiles. It’s the combination of losing that live rear axle in exchange for modern suspension tech, and the light, punchy twin-scroll-turbo EcoBoost variant which is a revelation. Now, I can already hear the V8 purists opine that there’s no replacement for displacement, and if you want a burbling, rumbling muscle car this is true. It’s just that the EcoBoost option is far away from being watered-down. In fact, it makes the new Mustang two very different cars — one a thunderous homage to a great tradition, the other a glimpse of the future. The EcoBoost’s 233kW is nothing to sneeze at either, especially as the switch-out lightens the whole car.

One of them — J.J. Abrams’ new Star Wars episode seven — will be released in mid-December. But the other — the new Ford Mustang generation six — is already among us. And Ford have left the world in no doubt that with this car, their global programme has reached a new apogee. Once the very icon of Americana, the ‘pony car’ is a movie star in its own right, to rival the likes of Han Solo. Gone in 60 seconds, for example, elevated the Shelby variant to the status of something to die for. Now the looks and the performance of that lineage are back on forecourts around the world, this time coming fresh from the factory with the controls on the correct side of the car. With the aggressive grille, long bonnet and classic Mustang stance, hunkered down low over fat tyres — this car would not look out of place on screen with Steve McQueen. That’s a big check for style, then — and a large aesthetic improvement from the brutally squared fifth generation Mustang which polarised critics. Everyone has their favourite classic Ford, and this shape hearkens back to the Mach 1, though without the ostentatious louvred back window. But is this new offering up to spec when it comes to speed and handling? The answer in short, is yes. And it’s not the big 5-litre V8 which truly
