The schooner Daring, built there in 1863, has been recovered, miraculously preserved, from beneath Muriwai beach, and was officially handed over to a special trust to arrange its permanent place of honour. The Daring is an irreplaceable artefact of her time; a ship built using all local native timbers in Mangawhai in 1863, at the height of the colonial era. She was travelling from Taranaki up the west coast in 1865 when she was run aground on Muriwai beach, a victim of the waves and gale-force winds, which often lash the coast. Buried in sand over her decks for more than one and a half centuries, she was lost to history until a storm revealed her on May 20, 2018. Maritime historians, including Baden Pascoe and John Street, quickly formed the Daring Rescue Group and paid out of their own funds to secure and explore the wreck. What they found was a preserved slice of history. Not just the ship, built using clever techniques of woodworking not seen elsewhere, but even items like shoes, a straw hat, ropes and other personal effects of the crew who abandoned the Daring on that stormy shore 155 years ago. Heavy trucks, water jets, excavators and more than $1 million later, the complete hull of the Daring was removed from the sand and taken to Auckland by low-loader truck. However, the intent was to bring her home. On Sunday, plans moved a step closer to the opening of a unique
p With a handshake, the Daring Rescue Trust hands over authority of the culturally and historically significant sailing ship to the Mangawhai Daring Trust
exhibit in Mangawhai. The Daring is to be housed in a purpose-built museum, showing the public a perfect snapshot of the past. John Street himself fired a maritime cannon to herald the handover to the Mangawhai Daring Trust, including well-known Mangawhai historical preservationist Jim Wintle, who presided over the handover. As some separate artefacts from the Daring were displayed, the children of Mangawhai Beach School’s kapa haka
group gave a spirited performance, and a handshake between Mr Wintle and Mr Street sealed this latest chapter in the Daring’s remarkable story. The ship itself will be carefully transported to its new home in February 2021, with design and fundraising now underway for the building, which Mr Wintle says will become “not just a Mangawhai attraction, but one of the pre-eminent educational and historic attractions in New Zealand.” ¢

p A birthday in triple digits is a rare and special event, so two at the same time is something for the record books. Dargaville’s Norfolk Court Home and Hospital recently celebrated a ‘203rd birthday’ as two residents achieved the ages of 101 and 102 years respectively, combining their very close-together celebrations into one high tea for their neighbours, family and friends. Joan Christy, 102, and Doris Panther, 101, joined hands to cut a giant strawberry-decorated cake following an afternoon of musical entertainment. Born in 1918 and 1919, both have seen a century of profound change and witnessed momentous events in history, and both, we’re assured, have received signed letters from the Queen on the occasion of their centenaries. John and the team at Norfolk Court led a spirited ‘happy birthday’ rendition for both ladies; Dargaville’s most senior and respected citizens.

Tip fight alerts new minister
u by Andy Bryenton

A new respite care and rehabilitation centre to cater for those who have suffered brain injuries is taking shape just south of Dargaville, thanks to a series of serendipitous events. The first item on their agenda; helping families at Christmas.
Hearings on plans for a huge landfill for Auckland rubbish in the Dome Valley will continue until December 17, but the Fight the Tip movement opposing the Waste Management Ltd application has now called for intervention from the new Minister for Conservation, Kiri Allan.
The facilities built by the now-closed, but locally wellremembered, Kumara Box were to have become a school camp. However, many months after they were put on sale they came to the attention of Whangareibased carers TLC4U2, who provide in-home care for many people affected by brain injuries and associated conditions, such as partial paralysis. In an open letter to the minister, FTT executive member, Michelle Carmichael says she is “writing in the hope that in your position you may be able to do something to protect this area from this proposal … by putting a halt to the proposal while alternatives are considered. “I also believe whether to allow another landfill in New Zealand is not a decision to be made by one local government body via its independent commissioners, as the central government needs to ensure that the way we handle waste in New Zealand is done in a way that results in the best environmental outcomes.” The letter continues: “This proposal is presenting potential devastating environmental impacts. The site waterways are tributaries to the Hoteo River, which flows into the Kaipara Harbour. “The Kaipara Harbour is habitat for major seafood stocks — snapper, mullet, multiple shellfish species, Maui dolphins.” FTT says the tip site is over unstable land, with an aquifer beneath and that waterways within the proposed landfill have to be diverted or reclaimed.

Poll possible on Maori seats
Free Christmas community feast
u by Paul Campbell
u by Andy Bryenton
The decision by the Northland Regional Council to provide a dedicated Maori seat at the decision table, a move also adopted by the Kaipara District Council, could be contested if five per cent of electors request a poll on the issue.
The team at Providence, Dargaville’s plant-based natural foods cafe and store, is welcoming all-comers to a free Christmas feast, making sure that the season is a festive one even for those without friends and relatives nearby.
The adoption of a Maori electoral ward led to the resignation of NRC councillor, John Bain, leading to a by-election, for which nominations are now open. NRC Chair Penny Smart says those elected to designated Maori seats will sign the same oath as other councillors, and represent and make decisions for the good of all Northlanders. “The proposed change will only strengthen the existing Maori/ council partnership.” Legally five per cent of electors, slightly more than 6,000 people in Northland, can demand a poll on introducing Maori constituencies and Chair Smart says this is p NRC Chair Penny Smart discusses Maori “currently being sought by some council seats in the community.” It would cost ratepayers about goes up, all will be paid less.” If the $240,000, added to the roughly $80,000 Maori seats go ahead, the council would for the by-election. A ‘road to the future’ is under construction into the first major residential development in Paparoa since the town was settled in 1863, with the Paparoa Community Charitable Trust’s Twin Streams subdivision already selling to buyers from as far away as Wellington.
This weekend, hundreds of people will visit Dargaville for the town’s annual Santa Parade, followed by, in many cases, a day of sun and fun at Selwyn Park, hosted by Silver Fern Farms.

Kapia Street Bus Stop
Taking care of Taharoa Domain-Kai Iwi
We are coming into the busiest period of the year where the local bus is running more frequently. It’s important the designated stop (outside the bakery in Kapia Street) is kept free at all times so the public bus can safely stop and drop off passengers. At the moment some people are using the space for their own parking, which means the bus is increasingly having to stop and let passengers off in the middle of the road.
Summer is coming and so are all our visitors. It’s the busiest time of the year for the Taharoa Domain-Kai Iwi area, and we need you to help us look after this beautiful gem.
Please help our team and community out, and ensure the bus stop is kept free for our public transport.
Get water blasting now Even though the rains have fallen hard over the last couple of weeks, it’s a good idea to get those pre-summer jobs done now. One of the first things to stop when the drought arrives is the use of water blasters/power washers. Now’s a great time to use them to get the house, driveway, boat clean before the rains slow down for summer. While we’ve got the water, it’s the best time to get cleaning.
Kaipara Libraries Summer Catalogue Stop into any Kaipara Library today and pick up your copy of our hot picks for summer reading.
The unique landscape around the lakes supports tons of native birds and plant life. Taharoa Domain Park Officer Jordan Soole regularly sees pīwakawaka, grey warblers, kōtare, and dotterel, as well as rarer birds like the secretive bittern (nationally critical conservation status), mātātā/fernbird (at risk/declining conservation status), New Zealand dabchick (recovering conservation staus), New Zealand scaupe, shining bronze cuckoo, spoonbill, white heron, tomtit and much more. As well as the stalwarts of our native forests (mānuka, kānuka, harakeke, cabbage trees, karo, red matipo, and karamu), Jordan also says the area is host to unique dracophyllum species (which look like something from a Dr Seuss book), and some not so common coprosma species and a few pomaderris. Did you know there are also three types of the carnivorous sundew that grow in the area? You won’t spot them until winter comes round again, as the plants hibernate through the summer. Kaipara District Council team jointly manages the Domain with Te Kuihi and Te Roroa, and together we have worked hard to ensure the area is protected while still being enjoyed by the many holidaymakers who visit. So what can you do? Remind your visitors of the rules in place which protect our Taharoa Domain-Kai Iwi area, as well as the people who enjoy it: •
No dogs are permitted in the Domain
•
No fires or fireworks are permitted in the Domain
•
Practice safe swimming. If you’re swimming with others, make sure you always keep an eye on your buddies. Remind your visitors there is no buoyancy in freshwater, and to be aware for the temperature drops that can occur with the sudden depth changes
•
Pearson Street Reserve, Mangawhai From this month Pearson Street Reserve in Mangawhai will be closed to vehicles all year round. Currently we close it to vehicles during winter to protect the reserve from ground damage. We have done this to ensure the safety and enjoyment of the increasing number of people who use the reserve, especially during the summer months. For any queries please email parks@kaipara.govt.nz

Public meeting for Aratapu dam

A crowd of close to one hundred local landowners packed the Southern Rugby Club’s clubrooms last Thursday to hear details about a new water storage project planned for the upper Pouto Peninsula, in the Aratapu and Te Kopuru area.
p Mayor Jason Smith addresses a large crowd at last week’s public meeting in Te Kopuru regarding the Te Tai Tokerau Water Trust’s dam-building proposals
The Te Tai Tokerau Water Trust (TTTWT) came to answer local questions about the pathway toward completion for the proposed water storage scheme on the peninsula, which has the multiple purposes of stabilising water supplies and unlocking new possibilities for land use. Under these auspices, members of the Kaipara Kai initiative, part of the Kaipara KickStart programme were also present, alongside Kaipara Mayor Dr Jason Smith, councillors Victoria de la Varis-Woodcock and David Wills, and local kaumatua Rex Nathan. This array of stakeholders in the project was completed with the presence of TTTWT leaders Dover Samuels, Murray McCully and Kathryn de Bruin, who
assembled a group of spokespeople to address the public. Evidence was presented of growing demand worldwide for horticultural crops such as kiwifruit, avocados and other specialist primary products. Mayor Smith agreed, saying the world was “shifting toward new crops that may demand more water, but create new opportunities.” Mr McCully confirmed that the post-Covid political environment was conducive to securing the loans and grants to build the planned series of three small reservoirs on the north Pouto Peninsula. Construction is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of next year with a projected completion date for the first reservoir set at mid-2023. ¢

Kai Iwi Lakes track in jeopardy u by Andy Bryenton
Despite connecting two of the most important natural wonders of the west Kaipara, the Kai Iwi Lakes track to the Ripiro Coast only attracts approximately 500 walkers each year. If it is not able to be remediated, it may be closed, according to the Department of Conservation. “While we understand there may be disappointment if the track is unable to stay open”, says Stephen Soole, Operations Manager for Kauri Coast. “The track doesn’t meet DOC track safety standards due to surface issues, which are difficult to resolve in the private section of track.” DOC has recognised the need to undertake urgent repairs to the section that provides access to Ripiro Beach to keep it open for the forthcoming summer p Kai Iwi Lakes track is one of the most scenic walks in the region but faces closure due to low visitor period. These repairs are numbers and the need for remedial maintenance currently underway. However, the assessment from the department is unlock funds for repair and upgrades, that significant financial investment is or closing the track permanently. DOC needed to address the track’s failings says it will consult with iwi partners long-term. The lack of a formal long- and other stakeholders soon before term agreement across privately owned making a decision in early 2021. In land used for the track makes its future the meantime, a strong message of uncertain. Options under consideration support could be for locals to use for the track’s future include seeking and enjoy the scenic walking track, new options for a Kai Iwi to Ripiro boosting user numbers and justifying Beach connection, making a case to remedial work. ¢
A time to remember u by Andy Bryenton
Dargaville’s Kaipara Hospice staff extend a welcome to all those who have been affected by the passing of a loved one this year, as they prepare their annual gathering of remembrance, to be held at the Northern Wairoa Boating Club tomorrow.
p Dargaville’s Take 5 singers perform at a previous ceremony of remembrance — this year’s gathering will be held tomorrow at the Northern Wairoa Boating Club
Hospice manager Annette says that while the holiday season is a time of family and friendship, this often means it’s also a time to remember with sadness the passing of those close to us. It is part of the healthy grieving process, and a small ceremony to commemorate the lives and the importance of those who have left us during this tumultuous year is an appropriate way to honour their memory. Like previous gatherings of remembrance, this year’s event will take place by the riverside, with the NWBC generously donating their
space by the water’s edge. From 5pm on Wednesday, December 2 all those who wish to pay their respects to loved ones passed away are invited to a nondenominational gathering with music, refreshments, and the chance to light a candle for or scatter rose petals for the memory of the deceased. “It need not even be someone who required the care of Hospice or even someone who has passed during 2020,” says the Hospice team. They also wish to use this opportunity to thank all of those who have supported their work in the community during 2020. ¢
MAORI CONSTITUENCY SEATS IN NORTHLAND – NRC CHAIR PENNY SMART There has been much in the media concerning NRC’s October decision to provide Maori Constituency Seats for the 2022 and 2025 Local Government Elections. Below I have provided some background information which I am hoping will provide some clarity; Councillors are elected to represent all Northlanders, once elected Councillors sign an oath to represent all Northlanders, NRC’s vision is Northland Together We Thrive. Maori elected to designated Maori seats will sign the same oath as other councillors; at the decision table they represent and make decisions for the good of all Northlanders. Councillors are elected by constituents to make democratic decisions using robust well considered information. Councillors are required to come to the decision table with no predetermination, willing to listen, contribute to good debate, then support the outcome of the vote. Councillors make many important decisions as part of their role, it is what they are elected to do and consult when required to do so by legislation.
Polls are not the same as community consultation. Polls are a yes or no vote with no consultation. In the case of Maori Representation, the poll is binding which means that council have to abide by the result. Holding a Poll/Referendum is expensive. The cost to NRC ratepayers of a poll/referendum is $240,000. Added this to the cost of the upcoming by election of $80,000 this comes to approximately $320,000. For context $320,000 is equal to approximately 1% of the current NRC annual rate take. One vote per person. Regardless of which electoral role a person is on they are only able to cast one vote. That is if Maori are enrolled and vote on the Maori Roll, they cannot also enrol and vote via the general roll. Remuneration for councillors comes from a finite pool of money decided upon by the central Government Remuneration Authority. Regardless of the number of councillors the total pool amount does not change, meaning that there would be no extra remuneration expense to ratepayers if Maori constituency seats are established.
MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY HOLIDAYS
The number of Maori Constituencies is decided using a formula based on the number of Maori enrolled on the Maori Electoral Roll. For the 2022 election it has yet to be decided by council and on current calculations would be two or three. The council in voting yes to Maori constituency seats at the October meeting concluded that it was appropriate and necessary to recognise Northland’s significant Maori population and the aspirations of tangata whenua by establishing dedicated Maori constituency seats at the council table where the important decisions are made for Northland and Te Tai Tokerau. The Waitangi Tribunal’s approach to determining Treaty principles state, “the Treaty established a relationship akin to a partnership, which imposes on the partners the duty to act reasonably, honourably, and in good faith. https:// waitangitribunal.govt.nz/treaty-of-waitangi/ principles-of-the-treaty/ Disclaimer: these are my personal views and not those of NRC or NRC Councillors.

Farewelling Gary Murdoch, QSM u by Andy Bryenton
Hardie Gary Murdoch was born on March 29 1938, one of four Dargaville brothers and the second from his family to enlist to serve as a firefighter with the Dargaville brigade. On the sad occasion of his passing, the members of that organisation and others paid tribute to his dedication and generous nature. Gary Murdoch served for 54 years with the Dargaville Volunteer Fire Brigade. He was also a life member of the RSA and a life member of the Dargaville Rugby Club. He was awarded the Queen’s Service Medal in 2018 and was hailed as Dargaville’s person of the year in 2015, but those who spoke at his recent funeral honoured his steadfast and generous nature over medals and plaques. Between his work for the post office, borough council and the power board,
Gary found time to assist in a vital administrative role with many local groups, foremost among them the volunteer brigade. Under its auspices, he served as secretary for a total of 35 years out of his 54 in service, while attending no less than 5,159 callouts, meetings and training exercises. Not content simply to serve in this capacity, Gary was also the custodian of the Dargaville firehouse’s amenities, gardens and facilities, keeping them in immaculate shape. He served as funeral officer for the RSA, its liaison with the fire brigade and as vice chairman of its management committee. He played rugby for

Bouncing back in business u by Paul Campbell
Getting over Covid shutdowns has become a struggle for many a New Zealand business, be they big or small, and an entrepreneurial Kaipara businesswoman is no exception. Raylee Over has had a radical change of fortune. However, undeterred she has simply adapted to her circumstances and realigned her florist operation from a shop front to private land sited close to the footpath in Paparoa’s commercial thoroughfare. “It was a fait accompli when my flower shop closed down during the Covid-19 level four shutdown and business just closed off, but I suppose I’m not the only one to end up in the cactus,” she said. “I mostly stayed home over lockdown and looked to open up at the local farmer’s market, but as fate would have it, another florist showed up there, and you can’t have a duplicate business. Someone was then going to buy my shop, but they, in turn, lost their job over the pandemic — a domino effect.” Now Raylee sells her flowers from a small cabinet shop in Valley Road, in the Paparoa business area on a Saturday morning. Business was brisk, with weekend foot traffic traversing the town and the nearby farmer’s market when
the Lifestyler passed by. The small ‘shop’ was put together by her son, from timber given by another relative to a design Raylee had drawn up. “I had the plan, and it was built so that it is now lockable and weatherproof,” said Raylee. “The ladies who own the business and land behind me gave me this position (adjacent to the footpath), and I have had lots of local support. Call it an entrepreneurial adventure.” Recent surveys by the accounting firm Xero have indicated that small businesses in New Zealand are recovering from the lockdown earlier this year, with particular emphasis on major urban and metropolitan areas. However, a quick straw poll of farmers’ market stallholders in Paparoa suggested business was reasonably steady, but a vendor selling fresh produce simply answered our query: ”Everyone has to eat, and I am selling food, so I guess I am in a win-win situation really.” ¢

Our Northland - Tō Tātou Taitokerau Stories and updates on the great work happening around the region to help our environment, economy and people thrive. Brought to you by Northland Regional Council.
Freshwater Improvement Fund helps eradicate aggressive aquatic weed A New Zealand-first operation saw an entire Northland dune lake treated with a herbicide in September of this year. Northland Regional Council staff are optimistic that the operation has been successful in helping to eradicate an unwanted oxygen weed. Lagarosiphon major was causing issues at 56-hectare Lake Ngatu, northwest of Awanui. This invasive plant smothers native plants, affects food and shelter for fish and other wildlife and can make recreational activities like boating and swimming difficult. Biodiversity Advisor Dylan Smith says after thorough research, consultation and monitoring, it was decided that a full-lake treatment (using roughly 7000 litres of the herbicide called Aquathol K, a derivative of Endothall) would be the most effective way of eradicating Lagarosiphon major from Ngatu. Mr Smith says Endothall is a ‘highly selective’ herbicide that only targets select species, including Lagarosiphon major. The herbicide spares native plants, is non-toxic to fish and aquatic invertebrates and the water can be safely used again within a relatively short timeframe; typically several days. Targeting the lake’s oxygen weed problem this way was a national first as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) only allows quarter lake treatments to avoid the potential for large volumes of dead pest plants lowering oxygen levels in the lake as they rot. (In this case, the risk was much less likely because there wasn’t so much weed it would have caused big changes to the lake’s water chemistry once it started dying).
Lake Ngatu is home to a number of important native species including the longfin tuna (eel). Photo credit: Irene Middleton, Seacologynz.com
The operation was undertaken by airboat through "The success at Lake Ngatu builds on our a Rotorua-based contractor in September, with knowledge of the issue, and it means we have a involvement from Northland Regional Council, the solution to the problem of Lagarosiphon major Department of Conservation and NgaiTakoto Kaitiaki at Lake Ngatu and anywhere else it's found," he Rangers. says. A dive survey 15 days after the operation showed the native plant community was thriving but the pest plant had died off significantly.
The Ngatu operation was carried out as part of a shared fund with the Ministry for the Environment from their Freshwater Improvement Fund (FIF).
The operation is part of the council's commitment to proactively protect freshwater against aquatic pest plants and future threats, says Deputy Chair Justin Blaikie, who also heads the council’s Water and Land Working Party.
The fund commits $100 million over a decade to improve the management of New Zealand's lakes, rivers, streams, groundwater and wetlands.
WAIMĀ WAITAI WAIORA UPDATE There’s been some great mahi happening in the Waimā Waitai Waiora project while we were all hibernating over winter. The project’s eight partners are working together to improve water quality in the Northern Wairoa River and its tributaries. Among their mahi at 16 different sites within the wider Kaipara catchment, they have planted just over 130,000 plants and built more than 20,000m of riparian fencing.
A round of applause to everyone who got their hands dirty!

Underwater riches of Ipipiri surveyed
The semi-sheltered areas between the central Islands of the Eastern Bay of Islands and the Rawhiti Channel contain some of Northland’s best-known examples of algal turf beds, subtidal seagrass and rhodolith beds. We’re proud to be supporting a project to survey the ecology of this important area, using underwater cameras and video, led by a group of local researchers together with NIWA and Ngāti Kuta.
Enviroschools Expos 2020 Water for Life ‘Water for Life – resilient communities in a changing climate’ was the theme of this year’s Northland Regional Council Enviroschools Expo series. Dozens of Year Four to Eight students, their whanau and teachers gathered at separate Whangārei and Kaipara expo events in November which focussed on the impacts the climate has on the region’s water resources and ways to take action to find possible solutions to local issues. Pictured is a tuna (eel) captured near Northpower's Wairua Hydroelectric station as part of learning about local freshwater ecology with Parawhau Hapū. The Whangārei expo also saw pupils visit the Draffin dairy farm at Poroti and Whangārei’s Hopua te Nihotetea flood water detention dam. The pupils – from Hikurangi, Maromaku, Whau Valley, Karetu and Whangarei Primary Schools – learned how these industries, ecosystems and flood works are all impacted by water and the climate.
The Kaipara expo saw students from Kaiwaka and Tinopai Schools and Ruawai College participate in a variety of water-related activities at three sites -- Thornton dairy farm at Maungataroto, Paparoa Lions' walkway, and Ruawai stopbanks and water filtration plant. Collectively, the expos focussed on the impacts of droughts and flooding on ecosystems, industries and people. Our changing climate will impact on freshwater availability in Northland, and we will need to work with nature to become resilient. The various activities emphasised two of the Enviroschools key concepts: that water is essential for life but can be a scarce resource, and that the importance of water is reflected in culture and society. The council introduced the annual expos more than a decade ago as a fun, exciting and handson learning experience. Each year a new theme builds on the Enviroschools kaupapa of how to live more sustainably.
Bay of Islands restoration efforts recognised at national awards Congratulations to Te Rawhiti 3B2 Ahu Whenua Trust - Nga Kaitiaki o Ipipiri Herenga Waaka (Guardians of Bay of Islands), which had a well-deserved win in the Te Tira Whakamataki Māori Award at the recent New Zealand Biosecurity Awards. For two decades, mana whenua from Patukeha Hapū and Ngati Kuta Hapū have been working tirelessly on pest control and helping bring back native life to the Bay of Islands. Meanwhile, Kerikeri Kindergarten was recognised as a finalist in the kura/school category for its amazing work that’s inspiring the next generation of biosecurity champions. We’re proud to support the amazing mahi of both these groups.

The annual hunt for marine pests was on recently in Whangārei Harbour's Marine Reserve at Reotahi. Staff from Northland Regional Council, Experiencing Marine Reserves charity and students from NorthTec and Kamo Intermediate school took part in this year’s Reotahi snorkel survey. Among a range of unwanted marine nasties, snorkellers were looking specifically for Mediterranean fanworm (Sabella spallanzanii) and Undaria seaweed (Undaria pinnatifida). They found no Undaria and only 14 fanworms compared to 27 last year – a good result!

Do you remember the days when things like floor mats, a radio, and a window demister were ‘optional extras’ on a car? In these times, when the options list usually runs to colourful components to add style and flair, the grim ‘cold war era’ practice of making the basics a tick box is long gone. Just how far we’ve come from those dark ages is apparent when you look at the Suzuki Baleno. It’s a small hatchback, which sits in the Japanese automaker’s range just above the ubiquitous, much-loved Swift. The Baleno is that little bit larger, with more cosmopolitan styling inside and out, and it’s a miracle of well-used space, with more room indoors than you used to find in the big sedans of that bygone era we mentioned earlier. It’s neither the unfussy, neat design, the legroom and headroom, the cargo space behind that wide hatch or even the exceptional fuel economy, close to 1,000 kilometres on $100 of fuel, which impresses the most. It’s the list of things you get in this car, which starts from less than $20,000; things that were optional extras, on even the big German luxury marques not so long ago. The list is extensive, so take a deep breath. For safety, there’s ABS, brake assist, five airbags, daytime running lights and an electronic stability program system. You’ll get a touch screen with full colour reversing camera, satellite navigation,

These are all on the standard car; there’s an RS Turbo with even more toys. Think back to the days when a tachometer was something you had to buy and bolt-on for yourself, and an oil pressure gauge was an expensive extra, and the Baleno looks like an incredible bargain. Compare it to several modern cars of the same vintage, which have

a price three times as high, and you might start to think there’s something to the argument that certain motorists are paying just for badge-related bragging rights. The Baleno will do everything the Swift will do, with a bit more room and power, and with a bit of a different stylistic twist to help you stand out from the crowd. Suzuki just ‘get’ small cars, as evidenced by its funky trio of the Jimny, Ignis and Swift Sport. The Baleno ticks a whole lot of boxes for an everyday drive. The best part is, it ticks them all for you, without making them optional extras. ¢

Get on two wheels for summer u by Andy Bryenton
Summer is here, the weather is fine, and the call of the open highway is strong. If your wish list has always included riding through New Zealand’s stunning scenery by motorcycle, then it’s time to start that adventure. Here’s how. The rules have changed slightly in terms of getting your motorcycle licence. However, the good news is that for some time now the old restriction to a small 250cc bike has been removed. That makes motorcycling more accessible to both big and tall riders and those in the countryside who need a little more power than their city commuter equals. Before picking from the large range of learner approved bikes available, however, it’s necessary to sit a basic handling test which proves you have the sense of balance to control a bike. If you can ride a pedal powered bicycle, this will be a snap. Then there’s a series of questions just like in your car licence to make sure you know the rules of the road. Pass these and you’ll be able to ride on the road, but not at night and not with passengers. Six months later, you can be assessed either by a VTNZ licence tester or a third party able to issue what’s called competency-based assessment certificate. Both of these represent tests of practical riding skills, and it’s suggested that you spend at least 120 hours on your bike learning before attempting to pass. On a restricted licence your bike must still be learner-approved, but you can ride at

NORTHTEC SUPPORTS GREAT LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES Jon Smith, NorthTec’s Acting Chief Executive, says the additional student support provided to learners is one of the best things about studying locally with NorthTec Tai Tokerau Wānanga. He says: “At NorthTec we understand that sometimes learners may face barriers which make it difficult for them to complete their studies. As well as providing academic advice and tips to help you learn, we also know that from time to time, life can get tough and things can disrupt your study journey.
“Our Student Support team is here to help remove those barriers, whether they’re about transport, finances, literacy and numeracy or digital literacy. They can assist by referring you to our academic advisors, guiding you towards agencies providing other types of support, or just being a shoulder to lean on when you need someone to talk to.
NorthTec provides a free, confidential health service for students, and a counselling service is also available. In addition, the Student Voice team works to support learners in a variety of ways, including advocacy, help gaining access to financial assistance and linking students up to other sources of help.
“Our tutors, too, are passionate about seeing you succeed and understand that sometimes you may need a little extra encouragement and help. With small class sizes you will also find support among your fellow students - our classes often become like whānau and students will help each other when the need is there.”
Jon Smith said: “We can also help with access to devices like Chromebooks and data. All our assistance is geared towards helping our ākonga (learners) have great education opportunities and gain the skills they need to go on to bright futures in the workplace.”
4.72/5.00 NorthTec tutors support student learning
4.32/5.00 Students are satisfied with the support provided to develop literacy and numeracy skills
NORTHTEC - A REALLY SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENT To prepare for training as a nurse, Dawn completed the NZ Certificate in Study and Career Preparation, Levels 3 and 4, at the Kerikeri Campus. There are a handful of people from the Kerikeri courses that are now studying with her for the Nursing degree. Dawn said she “was surprised with the amount of knowledge I retained from the Level 3 and 4 classes, especially about the human body. The results showed in my assignments.”
NorthTec Nursing Student Dawn Shaw wanted to be a nurse after her many experiences as a young mother in hospital and during many other medical events since. Dawn is a mother of five from Kaikohe with children aged from 14 to 3 years old and is currently studying towards her Bachelor of Nursing Degree at NorthTec. Dawn travels over 80km down to Whangarei each day she has classes. Dawn says “I’ve done other courses but every time I get older and circumstances at home change. I’ve done a hair and makeup course, outdoors and environmental studies, art, I just wanted to try lots of different things.”
“I just want to share how the Level 3 and 4 just really helped me. I didn’t know how to do math, I thought I didn’t know how to write a paragraph or a proper sentence, but the preparation courses gave me confidence. The tutor would say “Come and do this” and I would get embarrassed, like shame, I don’t even know how to do the times tables or addition or subtraction, and I don’t know where full stops go. I didn’t know how to use the laptop. I knew nothing. And just the confidence I’ve gained to be able to carry on and do the degree. From the foundations.” “My advice for anyone - people only say that they can’t do something because they lack the confidence in that area, like it’s fear. Just get out there and do it. When it gets hard, just stick at it. Ask for help, it’s a really supportive environment, we got really close as a class. We’re still in contact with everyone, and tutors as well.”

At the heart of Baylys Beach u by Andy Bryenton
A new community centre and facility to assist surf lifesavers came to life last weekend after many years of dedication, planning and sacrifice, and Baylys Beach residents gathered together in unity to celebrate its grand opening. From the trustees who have guided the process through to relatives of the centre’s namesake, Bill Hyland, through members of the Baylys Beach Society, civic councillors, representatives of Surf Life Saving New Zealand and on to past and present mayors and the local minister of parliament. All expressed their appreciation for the work of the architects and builders and
the generosity of contributors large and small who have made the new facility a reality. Bill himself, immortalised in the naming of the new community hub, was a general merchant in Dargaville who was motivated by a love of his beachside home and its environment, and who gave generously to the community throughout his lifetime. ¢ p The ribbon is cut, appropriately, by a member of Bill Hyland’s extended family, officially opening the centre named for the local businessman and philanthropist
p Silver Fern Farms was on hand with a barbecue lunch for all-comers, serving up the first community meal for the new centre
p Northland MP Willow-Jean Prime made her first official appearance at the Baylys Beach event, pictured here with Kaipara District Councillor Victoria De la Varis-Woodcock with a photograph of Bill Hyland himself p The modern new centre has been architecturally designed to blend with the landscape and spans three levels, with surf lifesaver accommodation, a hall, kitchen and garage space for surf lifesaving vehicles

To our extended families, friends, and neighbours, Ripia Marae, Oturei Marae and The Southern Rugby Club thank you. We are truly grateful.
Uncle Rich
Upon the early hours of the morning, when the sun itself is yawning A man cruises down Cole Road because the cow shed is calling. He wears stubbies, and a singlet bearing the symbol of Waikato Draught And no matter where he goes, he’s always good for a laugh The most handsome of slugs lay nestled above his lip And when the youngins were being pests, he knew how to crack the whip He was loved and respected by everyone far and wide Because it was well known that if they needed help, he would be by their side Behind all the jokes, behind his endless piss takes There existed a truly special man, make no mistake Who was selfless and helpful And caring and kind And his presence will be missed until the end of time But it’s not all doom and gloom, I know in heaven his spirit will linger Perhaps he’s up there right now, telling Jesus “Oi, pull my finger”. By Ben Milich
