A special tree for Christmas
by Paul Campbell

New Co-ordinator for popular local market
Two huge pururi trees which took root in Dargaville in the 19th century have had a Christmas visit from a family who once lived and played in their shadow.
For Mary Le Noel (nee Wilson), the Mangawhare corner section bounded by Liverpool Street from River Road is very different from the days when it was her childhood home. Now a resident of Tinopai, Mary lived with her parents and two brothers in a Victorian villa on that section of land, before it was aquired by the Northern Wairoa Dairy Company in 1973. “Today, the former dairy company administration building is the home of NorthSouth Multi Media, publishers of the Kaipara Lifestyler and a stable of four farming papers as well as books,” said a family spokesman, Kaipara farmer, Bill Guest. “These magnificent puriri trees were retained when the dairy company directors cleared three houses from the land, relocating one villa to Campbell Terrace nearby, where Mrs Le Noel’s mother, Gertrude, lived until her death in 1978. Her father Mervyn passed away in 1973. “This past weekend, Mary has come up to Dargaville with her four daughters and many of her grandchildren as well as twelve great-grandchildren and her brother Ian with his family and another brother Ken, now Brother Damian, a Franciscan monk.” The extended family held an unveiling and plaque dedication ceremony at the cemetery at Mt Wesley, and then moved down to enjoy a family lunch under the puriri trees. Mrs Le Noel said she believes the trees are over 150 years old and seemed special to local Maori. “When an important Maori died, locals came and picked leaves for use at the funeral.” Mr Guest said the two trees “are dominant in Dargaville and ought to have some heritage status. The gathering of some 30 descendents of the family made for a moving event, with many stories and anecdotes told in a background of fascination with the trees. It was surely an ideal time, with Christmas in the air.”

We’re looking after your community in so many ways
Thanks for a great year With this, our last edition for what has been a very eventful 2011, the staff of The Kaipara Lifestyler wishes you all a safe, happy and festive Christmas and New Year celebration and an enjoyable holiday whatever your destination may be. We would also like to extend a big thank you to all our readers and customers for the great support they have shown us over the last 12 months. The past year has been one of accelerated growth for both The Kaipara Lifestyler, and our farming titles, which now see our Kaipara-based company, NorthSouth Multi Media, spreading its wings with our farming lifestyle papers in wider Northland, Waikato, Taranaki and Canterbury. It has also been a year of great challenge for all of us, with the tragedy of Christchurch, and of Pike River, a ship grounding and winds and floods — not to mention international economic woes. One the other hand, we have hosted and won the Rugby World Cup, and elected a government. In fact, with Christmas upon us, it seems the past few months have telescoped time into a flurry of activities and events. Now though, it’s our opportunity for time out, to reflect on what has been a time of tumult, and hopefully to plan and look forward to better times ahead. The flowering of pohutakawa around the shores of the Kaipara suggest a long fine summer is beckoning.
Time then to recharge the human battery and look forward to 2012, and a new year in which opportunity clearly beckons. A major rural barometer of course is the agricultural outlook, and Fonterra has lifted its forecast payout to dairy farmers by 20 cents per kilo of solids for the 2012 season, after recovery in international dairy commodity prices over the last couple of months. Much of the early part of 2012 will be seeing the new term government getting to grips with the economy. With the king hits we have experienced from nature, we have a steep hill to climb. But there is one guarantee in life, our future is in our own hands. Neither Fonterra, central or local body government are going to wave a magic wand and make our future wonderful — we are the ones that have to work towards making that happen. The world is undergoing a global financial meltdown — seldom used words like twitter, tweet and facebook are now in everyday use — It is a changing world, and with change comes opportunity, so let’s welcome and take advantage of the challenges in the coming year and all work towards making 2012 a positive and prosperous year to remember.
In the meantime, from the team at NorthSouth Multi Media Ltd please accept our best wishes for a safe and happy holiday.

Christmas in the Gardens Despite the rain, Christmas in the Gardens organisers said they were absolutely stoked at the turnout, which was estimated to be 600 people. Numbers usually sit at about 1,200 but the intermittent rain and showers no doubt kept some revellers at home. The evening concert included entertainment performed by the talented folk at Circus Kumarani and some of the districts most talented singers,
musicians and dancers. Fifteen acts spread over two and a half hours, meant that there was never a dull moment and provided plenty of variety. Dargaville signwriter, Trevor Moss, provided a stunning painting, which was a work in progress over the evening. The gathered crowd supported the performers enthusiastically all evening.

New Co-ordinator for popular local market
The highly successful Riverside Produce Market has become a fixture on the local calendar over the last year — a meeting place for Dargaville residents and visitors to sample the best of the region’s fresh food. Having grown into a vibrant weekly event, the market has reached the point where a dedicated co-ordinator is needed to take it to the next level — and just the right person has been found for the job. Patrice Donaldson says that her experience as a mum are the perfect background for organising the markets — getting everyone in the right place at the right time and focusing on fun and variety. She’s ready to roll up her sleeves and get into the swing of things, as the markets continue over the holiday season, with tourists and visitors keen to experience the fresh produce and live entertainment — which the Riverside Produce Markets have become famous for.

This is a series of regular articles keeping you informed of happenings on our harbour today, and from bygone days — truly the ‘Jewel of the Kaipara’.
Care is a holiday watchword by Paul Campbell Holiday makers flocking to the biggest harbour in the southern hemisphere, with its 947-square kilometre expanse of sea with an 800-kilometre coastline, might be forgiven for not seeing too much more than a great waterway surrounded by spectacular landscapes. But behind the scene these holidays, there is plenty going on, apart from families camping, kayaking, fishing, waterskiing and taking part in myriad summer activities. There will be workers out there too. Pollution and run-off have come to the fore as Kaipara Harbour despoilers. Earlier this year a series of workshops were run by the Northern Regional Council, which has particular responsibility for our various waterways. These gatherings were organised to point out the problems with pollution and run-off and to alert communities and individuals to be aware of the problem. As part of this awareness, in pockets of land and estuaries around
Kaipara Harbour residents — keeping an eye on their coast
the harbour, summer will see a continuation of efforts in replanting. A cruise along part of the Otamatea coastline, and around Port Albert, show evidence of holiday home owners and farmers pitching in with shoreline planting. This is occurring alongside, or as part of, programmes such as the Te Uri O Hau project to see an additional two million plants around the harbour. However, the NRC has called for vigilance along the waterway itself. It has introduced action plans to cope with marine pest discoveries, aiming to educate harbour and coastal users and the wider public about the threats potential pest species pose and ways to stop these pests reaching Northland. And summer, with its increase in the coastal population is certainly a good time to spread this message to be aware of marine pests and report their presence for control by the council. Harbour users, residents and holiday makers are the first line of defence. For information to arm the uninitiated, have a look at the web-based New Zealand Marine Biosecurity Porthole which has been developed.
It houses data from a national series of biological surveys looking for unwanted marine pests, to detect invasive and harmful marine animals and plants early enough for them to be dealt with. It is also designed to detect the spread of established pests to previously clear locations in the harbour. And while you are keeping an eye out you may also come across holiday volunteers taking part in Catchment care, which is being carried out under the patronage of Fonterra. Over the holidays they will be out and about with spades and trowels putting in native plants and trees and clearing weeds. “As we move into the summer holidays, we’re hoping to get some local people who are keen to make a difference to the environment involved,” says Fonterra catchment care programme manager, Leana Hunt. “The aim is to protect and enhance the longterm health of the Kaipara Harbour. “This will involve habitat restoration including weeding and plant releasing, support fencing and planting in priority areas, habitat creation and erosion control planting.”

New look website for KDC Kaipara District Council now has a new look website with new information — and this is just the start. Council staff have been working alongside design company Zeald to produce a user-friendly website. The general consensus from Councillors and staff is that the new website ‘looks good’. The address www.kaipara.govt.nz remains unchanged. “It’s bright and fresh, has a Kaipara look and feel and is easy to navigate,” said Corporate Services Manager, Barbara Ware. “There is a lot of new information available with more to come. “A website is a living thing that should constantly evolve. We will continue to work behind the scenes to bring new things to the site. “Thanks to the people at Zeald we have the ability to update Council’s website almost immediately. This was not the case with the old site and it was frustrating for everyone.”

Eighteen teams took on the mid November challenge to conquer the tasks set before them, while at the same time aiding the community and familiarising themselves with some of Maungaturoto’s treasures.
“In addition to Ralph Schultz Helicopters, there were many organisations that helped make this day possible,” said organiser, Nyree Alcock.
The teams, armed with a map, money and food for bribes, enthusiastically set off from the Maungaturoto Centennial Hall to their allocated starting points. Next, the teams were tasked to fill their passport with stamps from various locations and complete some exciting, and less appealing, activities. Activities included collecting sheep manure from the Community Walkway for the

Political Notes. r. Coates asked the Minister of Public Works whether it is the intention of the Government to authorise the extension of the Kaihu Valley Railway to Donnelly’s Crossing, a distance of about four miles. (Note, this extension will be the outlet for approximately 300,000,000 feet of milling timber and will provide an outlet for Katui, Oranua, Tutamoe, Mangatu and neighbouring settlements carrying a population of over 300 people and opening up approximately 40,000 acres of Crown land at present in virgin state.) The Hon Mr. Fraser, Minister of Public Works, replied that the timber to which the Member for Kaipara contends this line would give access is strictly reserved at present, hence the main justification, which the Member urges for the further extension of the railway, is non-existent. The line would also be a difficult and expensive one to construct. The Minister’s reply is noted as unsatisfactory.

next-generation generation Kontiki Kontik
www.kontiki.co.nz
The predator, a winning catch Kontiki fishing is a popular pastime in the Kaipara district, with anglers embracing this innovative technology to ensure a great catch. But not all kontikis are created equal – design and development make a big difference to the top models on the market, and there are few which equal the brand new Predator 54. This sleek and deadly-looking device takes its cue from 100 million years of evolution, with the form of a shark giving it natural stability and a profile which slices through rough seas with ease. Travelling up to 2.3 kilometers offshore to harvest its catch, the Predator is designed to run smooth and true, with its unique tail, fins and rudder working in combination. In fact, it dives under breaking surf to get clear of the shore, powering through waves which would cause other kontikis serious trouble. The heart of the Predator 54 is its powerful motor with 54 pounds of thrust. It’s backed up by a safety cut out system to prevent snag damage too, and driven by not two but three batteries, ably accommodated by a wide, streamlined body. Many other manufacturers of kontiki fishing equipment have experienced problems recently with automatic guidance systems – socalled GPS and autopilots intended to stop the kontiki from drifting off line. Predator have adopted a prudently measured approach to this issue, with their own automatic guidance system still undergoing rigorous tests to make sure it’s up to the biggest seas and the most challenging conditions. For this reason, the Predator 54 offers the best of the both worlds... it’s not only naturally more stable and hydrodynamic because of its unique shape, but it will also be able to be retrofitted with automatic guidance when Predator’s research and development team are 100 percent sure that their tests have proven conclusive. That means you can get fishing this summer, and upgrade if and when you feel it’s needed. If you buy a Predator 54 today, you can choose to upgrade at a special price of $649, all-inclusive, when the autopilot becomes available. And what a summer of fishing it’s going to be with one of these mean-looking machines at your command! With a quick turnaround and a host of features to assist whether you’re fishing day or night, the Predator is sure to bring in a big catch every time... hassle free and with bulletproof reliability. Watching one of these kontikis in action, you can see why this form of fishing is fast becoming a favourite for anglers all over New Zealand.

Jazz was born in New Orleans in the early part of the 20th century. Shortly after its birth it left its native city and began an odyssey which was to eventually encompass the world. As part of its journey it moved west into Louisiana’s neighbouring state — Texas. Texas was home to a vast hodge-podge of musical traditions, all of which were bound together by a widespread fiddle tradition. One bandleader who enthusiastically adopted jazz was fiddler Bob Wills, leader of the Texas Playboys. Dance bands in the country areas originally consisted of stringed instruments: fiddles, guitars, mandolins, banjos, double basses. To these Wills added a drummer and horns, mainly trumpets and saxophones. His band eventually contained 22 players in its heyday. The result was jazz with a different tinge and emphasis which became known as Western Swing or Texas Swing. It was jazz with a strong country music tinge.

On Friday January 6 the Aratapu Tavern is presenting a celebration of this distinctive brand of music, played by a specially assembled band — The Northern Swing Seven, with Terry Toohill on fiddle and other string instruments, Chris Davidson on guitar, Carol Power on vocals, Joe Carbery on saxophones, Julian Russell on piano, Naomi Chitty on bass and Don Hales on drums. They will present a selection of tunes associated with the great names of Texas Swing.

in between you know there must be a middle ground — a game which gives you the visceral thrills and the tactical rush of simulated combat without the expense and the big bruises. You strap into a full-face mask and helmet, load up your totally accurate replica AK-47 and flip off the safety. Out there among a thirdworld shantytown with gravel streets and camo-netted shacks your friends are waiting, armed to the teeth. In the next hour you’ll experience all the action of virtual reality games like Counterstrike and Modern Warfare in real life, as you plant bombs, steal intel, snipe, outflank and duck into cover.
This is the hot new sport of Airsoft — essentially a game of soldiers amped up to adult levels and played out on an indoor battlefield. Will Browning is the tactical mastermind behind this new and exciting Waipu destination — right next to his parents’ brand new garden centre and cafe on the cove coast. He’s created a safe and controlled environment for friends to meet and shoot at each other, based on his experiences with Airsoft both here in New Zealand and in the United Kingdom. And despite the menacing guns and military armour, this really is as safe as a game of tag. Kids as young as 10 can enjoy playing airsoft with parental supervision, and with the protection of a helmet, mask and goggles the ‘tag’ from a 6mm plastic pellet is far less painful than the solid whack of a paintball. Rules are strictly enforced to make sure that every game is fair and risk-free. Players (as many as five per side right now) compete in multiple game types, with an emphasis on teamwork and tactics as they navigate alleys, shacks, oildrums and tyres in the battle zone. The fast-paced games last about an hour, with twists and special rules to keep the action fresh. If you’ve played paintball, if you’re a keen gamer, or if you want to try an exciting new sport with your mates (one where you get to shoot them!), then Airsoft is for you. Gather your ‘special forces’ and get out of virtual reality and into real adrenaline-pumping action these holidays!

Capitalising on Northern Sunshine
by Andy Bryenton
Kevin Black has been farming at Pouto for the last twenty years, running a herd of 240 dairy cows and 200 other cattle at a picturesque spot on the peninsula with views of the mighty Wairoa, as it flows down to the Kaipara Harbour. But in earlier years he was engaged in a very different trade — as a military marine engineer, and it was his job to keep the powerful turbines and boilers of an ocean-going warship at full steam. Knowledge of thermal energy was a big part of this job — crucial to keeping the big engines running. And this provided a surprising crossover when it came to one of the big expenses every dairy farmer knows all too well — providing hot water for his milking sheds. With tests and inspections becoming ever more stringent, and digital checks for bacteria, impurities and contamination now an integral part of providing top-quality milk, farmers need vast quantities of water at around 80 degrees Celsius — the right temperature to work with chemical detergents, and make sure that all the plant and infrastructure of milking are hygienically clean.

So, at a time when it was still considered an ‘alternative’ or emerging technology, Kevin Black adopted solar power to help heat his 350-litre cylinder. “Turbines and boilers were my bread and butter,” he says, “and I knew it took a lot more energy to get water from cold up to forty degrees, than it does to go from forty to eighty.” The heat of the Northland sun beating down on the roof of Kevin’s shed proved to be more than enough to give his water heater the boost it needed. “The power bill for my shed was in excess of $1,000 per month — anything that would cut that back was worthwhile. The reality is that the technology isn’t new. New Zealand hasn’t embraced solar power in the same way Europe has, perhaps because power (from hydro electric sources) used to be so cheap.” It’s been over six years since the solar panels went up at Tin Hau farms, and the savings from their installation have been right in line with what the EECA (the Government’s Energy Efficiency Authority) have found across the country on a number of test farms. The reduction in power costs has been timely, with prices for electricity rising even as the solar panels began to pay for themselves.
Great summer fun bike or farm bike The DR-Z250 lets you put the enjoyment back into off-road motorcycling with race bred handling, powerful oil-cooled motor, a slick 6-speed transmission and disc brakes front and rear. It comes equipped complete with electric start (with a kick-start backup), so whether you are out trail riding, blowing the cobwebs out after a hard week or working around the farm, the DR-Z250 is always ready for action.

Family fun for a worthy cause On January 2 every year, the Mangawhai community, holidaymakers and increasingly, those from further afield unite at Mangawhai Domain for the Mangawhai Summer Gala. Since its inception, the gala has steadily grown and is now one of the biggest events on Mangawhai’s calendar. Mangawhai Domain is owned by the community and looked after by a committee of volunteers. Fundraising is the main source of income for the domain’s operational and maintenance costs and 70 per cent of this is raised at the January gala day. “We run the gala in accordance with three principles,” said coAlpacas will be a new ordinator, John Dickie. “That is, attraction the Mangawhai Summer Gala to raise money for the domain, because it’s our main source of operational and agility demonstrations, the cafe and funding; for the community to have a barbecue, raffles and wine tasting. fun day out, which is why we keep prices Stalls include produce, jewellery, down and have lots of variety and for clothes, art, leather goods, and plants stall holders and concessionaires to also but with almost 200 stalls, this is just make money. the start. “We get very good support from local Pony rides will be returning for 2012, businesses and the community and have along with games for the young and old, about 6,000 paying people through the helicopter rides and a new attraction for gates. Shearing and cheering The inaugural Tangiteroria Tavern Speed Shearing Competition was a major success and contestants, organisers and onlookers are already looking forward to the next one. “It was awesome,” said hotel proprietor, Sheryl Harrison. “We had some talented shearers — about 25 all up and at the peak time about 400 or 500 people here. “Mike Stephens won the Open round, shearing a sheep in 24 seconds and it was just a really good night. Everyone has been raving about it and I’ve had phone calls from people saying, ‘You gotta do it again next year’. The competition included four shearing classes — Open, Old Timers, Senior’s and a Novelty Challenge plus the first ever Tangi Tavern versus the Ab Fab Tokatoka Bar and Café Shearing Challenge. The hosts were the lucky winners in an event
which saw one person eat a weetbix, another scull a beer and the third shear the sheep. “The sponsorship was unreal,” added Sheryl. “We had heaps and heaps of prizes, so much that each shearer should have received three or four things, plus their singlet and a meal voucher, and we still have prizes left for next year.” Sheep for the shearing competition were sponsored by Richard and Rosemary Drake. Local shearers, Mike Stephens and Neville Osborne, helped organise the event and they were assisted by the Drake’s worker, Barry Berger, in preparing the sheep for the competition. “It was a great atmosphere and we had a lot of helpers and some great staff behind the bar. We couldn’t have done it without everyone’s help and a huge thank you needs to go out to all our sponsors.”
